In a word H
ello! Welcome to Get it’s very special Body Issue. This month we’re focusing on all things body beautiful. From fitness to diets to celebs and their amazing health transformations, we spotlight getting your bod in perfect shape for the coming warmer season. Yes, I know what you’re all thinking...it’s winter! It’s pouring down rain half the time and it’s freezing cold outside. I admit it may not seem like the ideal time to give your health a complete renovation, but I hear you actually burn more calories during winter because your body is naturally trying to warm itself up. Besides, another night under the covers watching re-runs of Sex and the City isn’t exactly doing you (or me) and favours. So we’re here to help! This issue has inspired me to put down the remote, throw my winter hibernation plan out the window and get back on track to achieving my health goals. And I hope it does the same for you. This month, I’m swapping my Pj’s and slippers for pair of Kimmie K’s toosh-toning Sketchers and I’m going to start looking after myself. Not to worry though, these pages aren’t filled with fad diets and quick fixes, we want our readers to love their curves and embrace the skin they’re in. Maybe you can take a page out of Jennifer Hudson’s book and become the best person you can be...doing it for yourself, and no one else. Read more on Jen’s amazing body transformation on p50, find out what foods actually make you look more attraction on p26, or take a squiz at our line-up of Aussie’s hottest bods on p22. Enjoy!

social comment Can I get an endorsement with that…? SO the biggest wedding of the year, well, apart from the other biggest wedding of the year of course, is gearing up to be a biggun. Kim K, who just loves to play dress ups in her mum’s old hand-me-down wedding dresses for kicks, is finally getting married. Again. And this time, it’s someone she really really loves, apparently. Of course she does, she’s known him six months, what’s not to know? He’s a basketball player, whose family own a few burger chains and is about 16 foot tall, so he makes Kim look even tinier than she already is (there’s a bonus right there, no wonder she said yes), he’s got a good few mil in the bank and earns a good bit of dosh each year pumping a ball around a court every few weeks. I don’t know much about the NBA, but I’m picking if Kimmie has latched onto him, he must be pretty good. And he has nice eyes, a feature I’m sure she’s just as smitten with as his bank account. Plus he’s even got the same name as her mum, how cute if that’s not a match made in heaven, I’ll be a nun’s rosary bead. But don’t worry, Kimmie’s no shrinking violet in the moula department, neither. This smart little middle Kardashian has amassed a fortune said to be worth $30 mil - not bad for a girl whose claim to fame was being Paris Hilton’s BFF (sorry, Paris who? How’s that new reality show going for you, P? Not so great?). With endorsements on just about everything she either puts in her mouth or wraps around her bod, this girl is a walking cash machine. Everything she touches turns to gold, or so it would seem. Which is why the clever cookie ain’t galloping down the aisle with just any bloke - burger chains or not - without getting him to sign an airtight pre-nup. Hallelujah. But of course it’s not because she doesn’t know him (come on, six months you know someone back to front, right?) it’s because her late father, who famously defended OJ Simpson, would want her to. Their wedding alone is gonna be worth more than our entire national debt to the media, and just who steps into the ring to fight that exclusive picture battle is anyone’s guess. Kimmie has no aversion to selling anything that’s worth selling. From shoes to slimming products and shakes to jeans and workout shoes, they’re hard to keep up with, them Kardashian girls...but boy does it work. Who didn’t go out and get themselves a pair of bum-slimming Sketchers? Proposing with a ring the size of a satellite dish - 20 carats if you don’t mind - that’s 3.3 carats for every month they’ve known each other, so damn romantic, I don’t think the poor lad dare turn up with anything in his pocket any less to betroth his lovely bride-to-be. I’m celebrating my high tea hangover with the anticipation of Kimmie’s big day. Not that I think she’ll outshine it mind you (although I am unashamedly a Kardashian groupie) but it’ll certainly give Wils and Kate a run for their money with designers already lining up to offer the lovely Ms K anything she chooses for free, in return for the humongous publicity it’s sure to generate them. Ah, to be famous!

ver been woken by the utterly annoying sound of your phone ringing only a few hours after getting home from a huge night out? You stumble out of bed to answer the call. It’s your bank, and they’re asking if your credit card has been stolen. For a split second you panic thinking: ‘when? Where? Was it that creepy guy at the bar?’ After confirming it is, in fact, in your wallet, you ask the lovely bank representative on the other line why she’s enquiring, only to find out you left the local drinking hole where you signed a bill for $1100, got into a taxi (stopping at Mickey D’s on the way), before proceeding to Broadbeach for only one drink and returning in a $70 cab home - all in the space of three hours. Ah… champagne, my friend, you’ve done it again. I’m GC Gossip Girl and I’m here to bring you the local inside goss from far and wide. Enjoy!

CELEB GOSS The rumour mills are flying - could supermodel Kate Moss make an appearance at Splendour in the Grass this July? With her fiance Jamie Hince’s band The Kills headlining the festival, and new Splendour sponsor Rimmel London on board, the chances are pretty high. Fingers crossed! SHHH… Beers are now flowing again after many confused patrons of the Boardwalk Tavern thought the taps had gone dry. With the Boardwalk now rumoured to be sold and new owners at the helm, is it a case of too little, too late as the Sanctuary Cove’s pub fit out gets underway? Tell us where you would prefer to drink and we’ll be sure to track the locals to find you the best pub haunts in town. SPOTTED Channel Nine’s new show Top Design is due to air in mid-July. Local Gold Coast contestant and mother of two (hmm wonder who that could be...) was spotted driving a new Audi A1 along the coastline recently. Yep, she’s baaack! But what does it mean? Home too early, or home with a new car? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? After yet another change of management, a local waterfront restaurant has opened its doors for the fifth time in so many years. Newly branded, its marketing boasted a sense of exhilarating seafood, wild atmosphere and fun. Walking through the doors to see a logo that represented itself slightly more dead than alive and a banner that presented itself as specialising in “everything”, I suspect more management changes are to be expected. Will someone please tell me, when will they get it right?! WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR CAN MAKE Local DJ Incredaboi was fighting it out for a place in a DJ battle at Runaway Bay Tavern this time last year - a far cry from any establishment he had been spotted in before. Now featuring at Melbas and rumoured to play at Twenty1, where will he be spotted next?

Lemongrass, chilli and ginger steamed snapper Asian greens, soy, kombu and dashi broth Serves 6 Snapper 6 x 160g fresh fillets of snapper (skin removed) 3 sticks lemongrass 3 chillies 120g fresh ginger ⅓ bunch coriander 3 limes (zest only)
100ml mirin 100ml Chinese rice wine Asian Greens 1bunch pak choy 200g snow peas 1bunch Chinese broccoli
Broth 2L water 1sheet kombu (dried seaweed) 50g bonito flakes 100ml soy sauce (light)
Method Place water and kombu together in the multiplo in-bench steamer and bring to the boil; let simmer for approximately 10 minutes and turn off power. Add in bonito flakes; wait for approximately 15 minutes until flakes disperse to the bottom and then pass the liquid through a fine-meshed sieve. Return liquid to the in-bench steamer and add soy sauce, mirin and rice wine; bring to the boil. Line the steamer basket with chopped chilli, ginger and lemongrass and then layer with fresh coriander; position the fish on top of the herbs and then zest the lime over the snapper. Cut the pak choy into half pieces and then add
snow peas and Chinese broccoli to the steamer alongside the snapper, allow to simmer for approximately 4-6 minutes. If the flesh of the snapper feels quite firm when pressed in the meatiest section the fish is ready to serve(NB: take care as steam can easily scald). To plate, arrange steamed vegetables into the centre of a large bowl and season with a little soy sauce and a squeeze of lime juice. Lift sn apper fillet out of the steamer and place on top of the greens; pour about 100ml of the broth over the fish and sea-son with a pinch of sea salt and another squeeze of lime juice. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and chopped chilli.

Fashion Profile
chic à la mode
Alex Perry
Did you always want to be in fashion? You know, I never did. I wasn’t like 10 thinking I’m going to be a fashion designer one day. I thought I was going to be a teacher. I was always good at illustrating and I was particularly good at drawing people but I didn’t know how to fit that in with any careers being offered at school. You could be an accountant or study law or architecture or there were plumbers, but there wasn’t really anything creative on the list. So when I finished school I went to university for a year. I got into an arts education degree, and then applied to all of the design colleges – interior design, fashion, industrial design, and out of all of them I got into two fashion design courses. It wasn’t until about the third day of college that I actually understood that I would have to learn to pattern make and sew. First design? It was my first term project at college. We had to work with primary colours [so] it was a twopiece – a pair of red pants and an asymmetrical Duran Duran kind of top that was yellow and blue. It looked like a space-age jumpsuit. Your big break! When I finished college I got a job as a model agent. I knew nothing about it but I’ve always been a fairly good talker so I thought, you know what, I’ll just go and give it a try. And for the next five years that’s what I did. From there I moved to Chadwicks and [worked] there for about three years. Then one day I just decided I was going to open a shop. I thought, I didn’t study to do this...I don’t want to be 60 and turn around one day and say what would have happened if I had done that. So I literally just left work. A couple of weeks into it, somebody from Vogue had driven past, seen in the window and asked if I could do some stuff for them … and it kind of snowballed from there. Other magazines followed suit. Once [the designs] came out in Vogue, Cleo, ELLE and all those magazines started to call stuff in [too]. But to be really honest, it was still a trickle. It sounds pretty fabulous, and it was, but it took eight to 10 years until the business was really standing on its own two feet. Any defining moments? So many! I’ve been really fortunate that there’s been lots of moments in my career that have been punctuated with things that I think are amazing. What’s your inspiration? I’ve always looked at things that are beautiful. I have this really old Christian Dior book and it’s those masters of that time; Givenchy, Balenciaga, and all those guys, that I thought were incredible. Movies are a huge inspiration, both old ones and new ones. And music, especially once people started doing incredible music clips. Valentino, out of all of those modern-day designers, is the one that was really extraordinary. Latest Cuban Princess Collection The Geisha [theme] actually came in later. It was really more Cuban – the colours are Cuban, the print, the floral; then, as I was doing first samples, I started to play with fabrics and colour-blocking. I did these little collars that were sticking up and in my mind I was actually getting inspired my men’s crisp, sharp, pristine Cuban suiting. But as I was doing it I thought wait, it kind of does look a little oriental. It’s a really nice mix of those two cultures.
King of couture Alex Perry turned the heat up on the Gold Coast recently unveiling his latest Cuban Princess collection. As he joined forces with children’s Charity AEIOU Foundation for the gala event, Adele Rowlands-Dealey stopped by for a chat about his amazing career and new designs. 16

1.35am, three male suspects hold up a Miami convenience store with a shotgun. 5.47am, two suspects rob an Upper Coomera bottle shop with a claw hammer. 10am, in broad daylight, a man raids a Carrara chemist with a handgun. And that was just last month! Once known as a popular tourist playground, the Gold Coast is now being dubbed the new ‘Crime Capital of Australia’.

CRIME LOCAL
O
n average, there are three robberies per week on the Gold Coast with every form of weapon being used - from knives and machetes, to handguns and even tyre jacks. Last month, in one of the worst cases we’ve ever seen, Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding was left fighting for his life after being shot in the face. Damian was blasted at close range with a sawn-off shotgun by an alleged armed offender after he and his partner responded to an armed robbery at the Pacific Pines Tavern. He was rushed to the Gold Caost Hospital but died shortly afterwards.
the Gold Coast under resourced and, in fact, how safe are we? The latest police figures show that up until the end of May this year there were 82 armed robberies on the Gold Coast alone, with only 23 solved. In response to the shooting of SenConstable Leeding, Queensland Police set up Taskforce Resolve, a new violent crime squad aimed at tackling the rise of armed robberies on the Gold Coast. But is this a case of too little too late for the busiest police district in the state? Tanya Shepheard has lived in the Pacific Pines area for four years with her husband and two children. She believes that what happened to the detective was incredibly sad but she says it’s raised much-needed attention to the fact that penalties for robberies and most crimes just aren’t harsh enough. “The justice system is failing us, and not just for armed hold-ups. It needs a complete overhaul,” she says. “It’s been going like that for so long, the criminals are seeing how far they can get.” Tanya says that since the Pacific Pines area has achieved such rapid growth in a short amount of time, the area needs it’s own precinct, not just a police beat. “When we moved here into the new development there weren’t that many houses and now there are hundreds where we are and it’s happened just in the last couple of years.” “It was the third major crime in the area in the last three months and were just wondering where it’s coming from. A police beat just doesn’t warrant it anymore.” Tanya says that although she wouldn’t consider herself a regular at the Pacific Pines
“We’re in the grips of an armed robbery epidemic ... Without a doubt, the Gold Coast has cemented its position as the crime capital of Australia.” Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says the state has lost one of its finest with the death of Detective Sen-Constable Leeding, and it further demonstrates the danger police put themselves in every day to safeguard the community. Damian’s family made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support system after doctors warned the chances of recovery were slim to none. “This is a decision no family should have to make and my heart goes out to Damian’s wife and children and his extended family,’’ Ms Bligh says in a statement. “Any death is a tragedy, but the death of a police officer while he is responding to a crime and attempting to help those in danger is particularly devastating. “I’m truly saddened that we have lost one of our frontline police officers in this way.’’ Thousands of mourners turned up to pay their respects at the funeral of the slain policeman, including representatives from the FBI and other overseas crime fighting bodies. Behind a procession of bagpipes, Damian’s coffin was led slowly from the auditorium, his wife Sonya and his two young children, Hudson, 2, and Grace, three months, following tearfully behind. The Katy Perry song ‘Firework’ opened the emotional ceremony where Damian was given full police honours at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. After the ceremony, around 4000 uniformed police officers and emergency service crews created a guard of honour for the fallen officer’s final journey. The sad death of this brave and courageous father has affected thousands of people all over the country, but questions need to be asked about whether enough is being done to prevent such tragedies from happening. Tavern, she occasionally visits and in the wake of the recent shooting she would definitely think twice about visiting at night again. At a recent tourism lunch on the Gold Coast, Gold Coast Tourism boss Paul Donovan called for mandatory jail sentences for criminals to help control the crime in our city. “We need to lock them up and get them out of our society,” he says. “There should be mandatory sentences for anyone who gets out of line.” A mere three weeks after Damian’s tragic death, his boss Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Procter became the second police officer injured on the Coast in the past few weeks. Mark was stabbed in the chest with a glass drug pipe while executing a search warrant on an Upper Coomera home believed to be a clandestine drug lab. In the wake of recent events, Queensland Police Union chief Ian Leavers told The Courier Mail that drug-related crime on the Gold Coast is “out of control”. “Anyone who lives on the Gold Coast knows crime is out of control and [we’re] in the grips of an armed robbery epidemic,” he says. “Without a doubt, the Gold Coast has cemented its position as the crime capital of Australia.” A 37-year-old man, a 38-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, all from Nerang, have since been charged with the murder of SenConstable Damian Leeding and are due to face court again in August. Our nation stood still as we watched Damian’s son, Hudson, wave goodbye and his father’s casket was driven away. And, if the truth be told, many of those people are still hoping that justice is served to those who committed this cold-blooded crime. It is a stark reminder of how dangerous a police officer’s job is and how they put their lines on the line every day to protect the people and the cities we live in. “Today’s events have reminded us that our job as police is always dangerous, it never stops, and it comes at a heavy cost to us all,” Mr. Leavers on the day of Damian’s death. “It is also a stark reminder of what we risk every day, that when we leave home to go to work each day there are never any guarantees we will come home at the end of the day.” Words: Ashleigh Brock July/August 2011

Hottest Aussie Bods Our summer shores have long been producing some of the most gorgeous physiques on the globe. From actors to athletes, pop diva’s to Victoria’s Secret stunners; here’s our pick of Aussie’s hottest bods!
Megan Gale
From modelling and acting, to radio presenting and TV hosting, it’s safe to say Megan Gale’s career has flourished beautifully. But Megan’s recent step back into the spotlight marks an image transformation for the once-curvy beauty who appears to have lost almost 12 kg after some big changes in her personal life – including her sudden split from long-time boyfriend Andy Lee. Megan’s startlingly slimmer appearance has sparked plenty of speculation about the reasons for the change. So is it a case of ‘new man, new body’, or is Megan having second thoughts about her 2008 retirement from the runway?
Hugh Jackman
Jessica Hart
After graduating university with a Communications degree, this Sydneysider pursued drama at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, immediately after which he was offered a starring role in the ABC-TV prison drama Correlli opposite his future wife Deborra-Lee Furness. Several TV roles and blockbusters movies later, the star of the popular Australia and, more notably, X-Men has become a singing, acting and dancing triple threat and one of Australia’s most celebrated celebs to date. And we have to admit, he’s hot to trot too! Voted People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, Australia’s Mr Sex, Hugh Jackman, has revealed the secret to his hunky body. “I run 45 minutes every day to the gym, where I row, cycle and lift weights. You have to sweat every day.” And does he have a special diet? “Yes! No sugar. I eat every three hours – but not much carbohydrate. A lot of vegetables, salad, fish [and] chicken.”
‘The girl with the gap-tooth smile’. Much like Miranda, Jess was encouraged to enter Dolly magazine’s teen modelling competition in 2000. After taking the crown, she moved to New York City to pursue her career in modelling and has since posed for Victoria’s Secrets, Guess, Triumph, Esprit, Seafolly, Myer, Wayne by Wayne Cooper, Zimmerman, Cue, and many more, as well as appearing on the cover of Australian Vogue, in the 2009 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, Cleo, Cosmopolitan, Madison, Elle, and Harpers Bazaar, just to name a few. Nicky Whelan Miss Whelan left her role as Pepper Steiger in Neighbours in 2007 to test the waters in Hollywood, scoring a regular gig on the US TV series Scrubs. But she became most celebrated for her role in this year’s Box Office smash hit, Hall Pass. The 29-yearold was keen to team up with directing duo Peter and Bobby Farrelly for the role of Leigh, a barista in a local café who mesmerizes married real estate agent, Rick (Owen Wilson). “Nicky, aside from being easy on the eyes, was also very funny and great in the part,” says Owen.
MIRANDA KERR & DELTA GOODREM They had never crossed paths, but their shared beauty brought Aussie wonder women Miranda Kerr and Delta Goodrem together for this Los Angeles shoot. With the face of an angel, Miranda has come a long way from her farm upbringing in country New South Wales. Winning the Dolly modelling competition at the age of 13, Miranda’s beauty, grace and style have since seen her become one of Australia’s most successful models. And with a body like hers, it’s hard to believe she gave birth to baby Flynn just six months ago! Miss Goodrem, 26, has attracted quite a bit of media attention lately with rumours confirmed she and her teenage partner Nick Jonas, of the Jonas Brothers, are official! But can you really blame Nick? Delta’s HOT! The singer-songwriter, pianist, and actress signed to Sony at the age of 15, and rose to prominence in 2002, starring in Neighbours as Nina Tucker. She’s since achieved eight No. 1 singles and three No. 1 albums in Australia alone!
Jennifer Hawkins
Samantha Harris
She’s the creative force behind Cozi swimwear, an ambassador for Audi, the face of Australia biggest retailer Myer, and represents a number of big name brands - including the highly respected Loveable lingerie, and international cosmetics label Covergirl. And to put the icing on the cake, she’s been named the host of Channel Seven’s Make Me A Supermodel. Since being crowned Miss Universe in 2004, Jennifer Hawkins seems to have done it all!
She’s been impossible to ignore as her gorgeous features, mile-long limbs and beautiful bee-stung lips are plastered over billboards and magazine covers worldwide. Walking a record number of shows at last year’s Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, becoming the face of Seafolly and landing the cover of Vogue Australia is all in a day’s work for Samantha. But there’s more to this young beauty than her striking looks. While she may be on the brink of international stardom, Samantha still keeps her feet planted firmly on the ground and her heart with her heritage becoming the face of Aboriginal Pride.

With a competitive history spanning over surf, ski, board, and Ironwoman Championships, Hayley says she has a simply philosophy when it comes to finetuning her body: “It’s a matter of finding what works ... I eat what I want; if I’m out to dinner and feel like hot chips, I’ll have them. If I have hot chips, I’ll have something good with them…you’ve just got to be prepared to work.”
Simon Baker
Australia’s favourite mentalist, Simon Baker, was first recognised back in ‘92, when he received Australia’s prestigious Logie award for Most Popular New Talent. The former bricklayer soon relocated to LA with his family and was almost immediately cast in the Academy Award-winning film L.A. Confidential (1997). It’s a fact: You are what you eat. New research shows that your diet has more impact on your health and appearance than experts ever thought. So try our top 10 nutritious eats today, and keep yourself looking fabulous forever!
We all know a healthy diet can reduce your waistline and up your energy levels, but did you know that what you eat has a direct impact on your appearance too? When we spoke to food researchers, health practitioners, and nutritionists, they agreed that certain foods are especially helpful if you want to look your best. “Research has found that certain nutrients make you more attractive and that some do so within days,” says dermatologist Dr Nicholas Perricone, author of Forever Young. So we set off to find the top treats to keep you looking and feeling great!
apple a day keeps...
Blueberries
Blueberries have become known as one of the best superfoods available due to their powerful antioxidant punch and their ability to protect your body from enzymes. However, what you may not already know is that these wonder berries can help improve your skin’s elastin which can help decrease the damage done by UV light and even reverse the affects of brain aging.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away… and the dentist at bay! According to nutritionist Esther Blum, this crunchy snack has been shown to actively buff away the stubborn yellowing stains left behind by the food and drinks we simply can’t bring ourselves to give up tea, coffee and a nice hot curry.
Kiwifruit Chocolate Isn’t this what everybody loves to hear? Chocolate is actually good for you!. The cacao bean contains an incredible amount of antioxidants that increase blood flow, protect your skin from premature aging and are beneficial for your heart, but the key is to stick to good-quality, dark chocolate. Obviously going overboard is never a good thing either, so just try breaking off a couple of squares, or sprinkling a little into a smoothie for your body to feel the rewards. July/August 2011

Ensure your yummy mummy status by eating kiwis. No, not our NZ neighbours, I mean the delicious green fruit that’s full of vitamin C goodness. Experts tell us that vitamin C can slow down the body’s aging process by stimulating collagen production. And the more collagen you have in your skin, the firmer and more elastic it will be.

BEAUTY HEALTH
Eggs Eggs are one of the richest food sources of choline, a nutrient that is critical to brain function. They’re also very high in biotin, which is responsible for giving your nails super-strength. It sure beats going to the manicurist every other week!
Green Beans
Flaxseed It may be tiny, but it’s mighty! The flaxseed carries one of the biggest nutrient payloads on the planet. And while it’s not technically a grain, it has a similar vitamin and mineral profile to grains, while the amount of fiber, antioxidants, and Omega-3 fatty acids in flax leaves grains in the dust. Omega-3 fatty acids help hydrate your skin from the inside out leaving it soft and smooth.
Green beans pack a punch of health benefits including lowering blood fat levels, decreasing inflammation, fighting free radicals in your body that cause cell damage and lead to disease, improving your immune system function, and are high in silicon (not to be confused with a Playboy bunny’s best friend, silicone) which actively strengthens and thickens your hair for shiny, luscious locks.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are the proven antidote to banish those nasty little breakouts for good! Recent studies have found that those who suffer from acne tend to be zinc-deficient, but these little powerhouses are jam-packed with zinky goodness. Aim for two teaspoons of pumpkin seeds each day.
Spinach
Spinach isn’t just for Popeye! Leafy, dark green vegetables, and most notably spinach, are rich in selenium and glutathion which can empower your body’s cells so that they can get rid of nasty toxins and hold on tightly to helpful nutrients. These kinds of veggies act much in the same way as blueberries when it comes to the use of antioxidants, and can reverse the effects of skin aging.
Watercress
Do you sometimes find yourself looking more and more like a puffer fish? Dr Perricone says to try eating watercress. It’s chock-a-block with antioxidants and, when consumed on a daily basis, can reduce inflammation and pore size; and it’s a good source of iron , which helps give your skin a beautiful glow.

HEALTHY HABITS
It’s never too early to start good dental care, and although new parents are often bombarded with information about sleeping, feeding, education and play, many are none the wiser when it comes to caring for their children’s teeth. Gold Coast dentist Dr Stephen Coulson is urging parents and carers to introduce their littlies to a dental practitioner from an early age to ensure a lifetime of good oral health. The main issues for children is the tooth decay which is usually caused by a high frequency, high sugar diet paired with inadequate teeth cleaning and prolonged bottle feeding. Dental hygienist Janet Stephens says the team at Smileplus are dedicated to ensuring a positive experience for all first-time patients. “It’s important that a child’s first experience at the dentist is a good one, and our friendly staff make sure of that,” she says. “As well as thoroughly checking their teeth, we can advise parents on how to look after their children’s teeth and what to avoid. There is no question that regular dental check-
ups can put children into a lower risk group for tooth decay and gum disease, ultimately saving a family’s healthcare bill.” Dr Coulson says the biggest concern for dentists was the number of parents and carers who were still not getting the message about the dangers of sweetened drinks. “We still see young children needing extractions because they have been given sipper cups or bottles filled with fruit juice, cordial or even fizzy drinks as a soother,” he says. “I cannot stress how important that first set of teeth is to a child’s development. If a child suffers extractions, as a result of tooth decay, the chance of orthodontic treatment increases and this can be a very costly process. First teeth should be retained up until the time the secondary teeth are erupting

as this aids in tooth alignment and facial bone development.” Some top tips for a child’s healthy smile are: even before their teeth have emerged, use a small soft bristled brush to massage the child’s gums; once teeth emerge, brush twice a day and supervise until your child is about seven; limit sugary foods and drinks; replace toothbrushes every three months; visit your dentist at least once a year; and avoid relating your own negative experiences with them. Typically, parents are told to just treat the symptoms of a cold or the flu and make their child comfortable, because these common infections are caused by viruses and there are no treatments. While symptomatic treatments are important to help your child feel better, this is not totally true anymore. There are many medications available now to help treat the flu. Symptoms of a Cold Cold symptoms are usually mild and develop two or three days after you are exposed to somebody else that is sick. Symptoms may include a fever, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, a cough, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms usually worsen over the first three to five days, and then slowly go away within 10 to 14 days. Treating a Cold Since it’s caused by a virus,

antibiotics don’t work against the common cold. These types of upper respiratory infections go away on their own and taking antibiotics will not help your child get better any faster. They’re also not likely to prevent secondary bacterial infections, such as ear infections or sinus infection. Although there is no cure for colds, that does not mean that you can’t treat your child’s symptoms to help them feel better. Extra fluids, a cool mist humidifier, and rest should help with some of the symptoms. Medications that may help, depending on your child’s symptoms, include a pain and fever reducer, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and a cold medicine with a decongestant and/or cough suppressant. beautiful brows
W
ell groomed eyebrows are paramount in achieving that enviable, head-turning facial beauty. They define the face and, if done well, they can have a miraculous effect on anyone’s appearance. They can even offer a lift to the face known in the beautician world as the “Eyebrow Lift”. You can groom your eyebrows by tweezing, waxing or threading. I recommend getting a professional to first shape your brows then you can just keep them tidy at home by regularly tweezing as the hairs grow back. Tweezing is hands-down the safest, cleanest and easiest method to groom your brows at home but it’s very important to get the brows as balanced and even as possible. By following the tips below, you’ll be able to achieve your best eyebrows ever! GROOMING: The first tip is to never overpluck. To avoid this only tweeze one hair at a time. I recommend using slanted tweezers in natural lighting with a large magnifying mirror. If you over-pluck it can take months for the hair to grow back (and trust me, you don’t want that). If you find tweezing painful, you can use some baby teething gel to numb the area first. Always pluck hair in the direction of the growth while holding the skin taught with your other hand. HOW FAR TO PLUCK: The inner edge - Take a long pencil and hold it parallel to the inner edge of your outer nostril. This is where your brow should begin. The outer edge - Hold the pencil from your outer nostril to the outer corner of your eye. This is where your brow should end. The Arch - Most brows have a natural, slight arch to them. To find yours hold the pencil starting at the outer edge of your nostril and line it up to the outer corner of your iris (the coloured part of your eye). Where the brush meets your brow should be the highest part of the arch. DEFINING WITH MAKEUP: You can use either a brow powder or a brow pencil to fill-in sparse eyebrows or to add definition. The brow powder is generally applied with a coarse angled brush and gives the most natural look. If you choose to use a brow pencil, apply with short, feather-like strokes. If you find you have gone a little overboard simply use a lash brush to comb through the brows. To keep the brows perfectly groomed all day I recommend using a clear brow gel, which will have a wand for application, or simply spraying a little hairspray onto the back of your hand and using your finger to apply a small amount to the brows. A well-shaped set of brows can completely alter your look and take you from drab to fab. But many people overlook their significance. Don’t be an Eyebrow victim any longer!

Dracula’s Delight
Strap yourself in for the ride of your life, and immerse yourself in the world of the Vampyre as Dracula’s newest stage production Redrum comes alive.
N
estled between Jupiters Casino and Pacific Fair, in the heart of cosmopolitan Broadbeach is Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant - a Gold Coast icon with a reputation for serving up a whole lot more than you bargained for! Now before flicking this into the kitsch, touristonly-activity category, Dracula’s might surprise you in that it’s incredible value for money, great entertainment, and has culinary prowess like none other. From the moment we arrived at Dracula’s the entertainment began! We were greeted at the gates by wacky characters who guide you through the castle doors, into the coffin chamber and up the stairs to the Graveyard Cocktail Lounge. While exploring the haunted passages and baroque décor, we sipped on champagne and gulped Dracula’s Gothic Cocktails. With plenty of devilishly good concoction to choose from, including: Murderous Margaritas; Bad Dreams potions; Witches Brews; Carpathian Caipiroskas; or, my personal favourite, Dracula’s Daiquiris a bursting infusion of lime, lemon, peach, strawberry, banana, mango, pineapple and (ALCOHOL: vodka? White Rum?). After taking in the sights, we prepared ourselves for a ride on the eerie Ghost Train into the Theatre of the Vampyre, where we dined on a delicious three-course meal, surrounded by a berserk circus atmosphere, while the talented Spine Crunchers jazz band set the mood and the eccentric waiters provided the insanity. We all wolfed down our delicious assorted canapés, Bloody Marys and scrumptious entrées of spinach, ricotta, bacon and sundried tomato tartlets before anyone could say: “Boo!” When it came time to choose our main meal, we were met with a list of delectable items all with an inventively vampire-esque thread, such as: Silence of the Lambs; Bram Stoker’s Beef; or my choice; Count Vlad’s succulent chicken breast. Pocketed with mango and bocconchini cheese, then served on rosti potato and fresh seasonal vegetables, soothed with a champagne hollandaise www.getitmagazine.com.au
sauce. Next came Dracula’s ghoulish dessert. Now we all know how much I like my chocolate, and this sweet number was a dessert to die for! Aptly named Death by Chocolate, the novel treat is made up of a dark chocolate coffin, filled with a mix of Toblerone coffee liqueur mousse, resting on chocolate dirt and raspberry coulis. (If I ever

“We often hear locals saying how much they enjoyed Dracula’s when we first opened; well all I can say is you should see us now...” have to choose a last meal, this will be it!) But it’s not just the food that makes Dracula’s such a great dining experience. For 30 years Dracula’s Cabaret has thrilled audiences from Australia and all around the world with its unique blend of brassy burlesque and black comedy. The thrilling musical cabaret oozes retro horror in a fast-paced variety show that literally leaps through the cinema screen, onto the stage. And their latest production Redrum does not disappoint. Starring the talents of Richard Macionis, Jon Peck, Amy Young and Tania Crealy, with Charne Louise on keys and vocals, Chris ‘Zoo’ Keipert on drums and Dave ‘Kamikaze’ Kume on lead guitar, we see a tight cast in a show that never ceases to surprise. Redrum celebrates the launch of the “Next Generation” Dracula’s experience. Director Haydie Newman sets the scene: “The entire venue has been given an extreme image makeover. We have basically sexed the experience up, sexy décor, sexy waiters, more fangs, more cleavage and an adult edge to the entertainment.” Dracula’s has completed the transition from Aussie theatre restaurant to Berlin style cabaret. Haydie adds, “We often hear locals saying how much they enjoyed Dracula’s when we first opened; well all I can say is you should see us now! Live jazz, award winning catering and entertainment that

Frankenstein’s Monster (Frankie-wankie) and the Creature from The Black Lagoon (Goonie) - Redrum features witty vampire variety that combines acerbic comedy, wicked burlesque, amazing aerial circus acts, deceased puppets, gory magic and more, in two hours of off the dial madness and creative insanity that absolutely rocks! These famous dinner shows are a tightly run operation, executed with a kind of gimmicky finesse that anyone with half a sense of humour could appreciate. But many believe once you’ve seen one show, you’ve seen them all. Well let me tell you how very wrong you are. Dracula’s next offering will have the hairs on the back of your neck bristling and leave you begging for more. But don’t just take my word for it; sacrifice your mortal soul to Dracula’s castle and experience a night guaranteed to leave you scarred for life! Class Act Get it test drives the latest edition to Audi bunch, the A1.
Y
ou wouldn’t think it, looking at Audi’s current output, but just 30 years ago it was a quirky, unpopular brand building strange and unconventional cars that appealed to pipesmoking, bearded blokes and nobody else. Boy has that changed! Upon the launch of Audi’s latest edition, we test-drive the new the A1 and give you all the ins and outs before you decide to buy. From the outside it looks like an A4 that’s been shrunk in the wash, which isn’t a bad thing. Its LED running lamps and that gaping radiator grille which mark it out as the little brother of the prestigious Audi family, and while the back is quite simple, the front is simply striking! And you can specify contrasting coloured roof arches which really jazz things up. Now climb inside and it gets even better. Audi designs the best interiors in the business and there’s an immediate sense of quality and craftsmanship when you open the door of an A1 and park your derriere. Perfectly highlighting the amalgamation of German precision/Audi style with contemporary fashion and cuteness, the A1 interior is slightly different from any other Audi. The curved instrument panel contains the regular gauges, but unlike the others - climate control is managed by four, large, coloured, circular vents with balltype adjustment (just like aircraft vents).

In the middle is a class-leading sat-nav with bird’s eye view and bluetooth available. The front seats are quite sporty in their shape and are very comfy. Access to the rear seats is good for a threedoor hatch and, with some co-operation from front seat occupants, even full-size adults can be content. So far so good, but where it needs to deliver its knockout blow to its rivals is in the driving experience. With a choice of three engines – two petrol (a 1.2-litre and a 1.4) and a 1.6-litre turbodiesel – the A1 range isn’t about to tempt you away from that hotted-up hatch you’ve been eyeing off for months, but it will satisfy your senses in ways its fellow contenders won’t. The A1 drives like a bigger car, with a heavy, safe feel to its steering. And with the turbodiesel engine, you’ll feel plenty of grunt throughout the rev range. It feels very quick and quite refined but you can still expect low running costs and green credibility – in fact if you opt for this 1.6-litre diesel you can feel a warm sense of smug, self-satisfaction with 99g/km CO2 emissions. This little cutey wears the four-ring badge with pride. Great looks inside and out, a brillant performance from that 1.6-litre turbodiesel and value for your buck, the Audi A1 mounts a credible argument for being the best in its class.

LAST WORD
JENNIFER HUDSON Talks Hollywood scenes, beauty regimes, and getting the body of her dreams.
The Billboards
Jennifer Hudson came from humble beginnings in Chicago Ilinosis to become an internationally recognised artist, but her astonishing career trajectory has not been one without hardship and struggles. At the young age of seven, she sang in the church choir, performed every chance she could in the community theatre and eventually landed the gig of singing and performing on
When Jennifer finally came to audition for the third season of American Idol; the moment that catapulted her into a new vocal stratosphere was met with resistance from Randy Jackson saying: “We’re expecting more than a cruise ship performance from you,” and more is exactly what she gave him. Belting out an Aretha Franklin number, a new star was born. Her untrained gospel voice and raw talent is what gained her credit on the US talent show. After a change in song choices, Jen went from the second-lowest number of votes in two of the first three shows, to reaching the top seven. That was her last week on the show with judges who all showered her with praise for her rendition of Barry Manilow’s ‘Weekend in New England’. But coming off as seventh b e s t only fuelled her desire to become the star you hear and see today. Her latest hit ‘I remember me’ debuted at No. 2 on the Billboards 200 selling a whopping 165, 000 copies in its first week of release. And a shining new career meant a shining new image was in tow.
The Bod
July/August 2011
Jen candidly opened up to Oprah recently revealing she’d lost an astounding 35 kg (that’s the equivalent of five dress sizes!) to reach her now svelte and sexy US size six. “It’s like a brand new me!” she says. Jen says the transformation came, in part, from the helping hands of Weight Watchers, for whom she is now the spokes woman for, as well as her desire to take a new direction in life following a harrowing family tragedy in late 2008 – a shooting that claimed the lives of her mother, brother and nephew.
50
Behind the scenes Jen was mourning the great loss, but in the ever-scrutinising public eye she threw herself into her newly established musical career with undeniable strength of character. Jen says God and her family helped her get through those tough times declaring: “The only thing I can do to honour their memory is to make them proud.” Perhaps this was the catalyst for her amazing body transformation. With each day she left the horror behind so too she left each kilo, shedding her tears alongside her weight. What emerged was to be heralded as one of 2011’s best bods.
The Beauty
When asked about her greatest beauty secrets since becoming a mother, Jen says beauty sleep is what she values most. “Between working and keeping up with my son, I can’t say that I get too much sleep,” she says. According to the singing superstar, it was easy keeping her pregnancy a secret from the media as there were none of the tell tale signs in the first and second trimesters. With no morning sickness or cravings, Jen didn’t even start to show until seven months into her pregnancy. On August 10, 2009, Jen gave birth to her first son with David Otunga, naming him David Daniel Otunga Jr. Although Jen was entirely comfortable at her previous size she does admit that, these days, “clothes are a lot more fun.” As for her inspiration to remain slender, she wants to set a good example for her new bub - who also keeps her in shape with regular “dance offs” at home. What a career; what a woman; and what a body transformation!
