In a word W
Follow me on:
elcome to our new-look Get it, where we’ve created a magazine that’s Twitter: gg entirely for you, about you and the _ & Faceboo 75 people around you. Goosie Coak: This month, we take a look at some serious st societal issues – from the breakdown of the family unit – to women who’ve made sacrifices in their marriages (who hasn’t, but I’m not sure giving up wearing your socks in bed truly constitutes as a sacrifice). There is always going to be some sort of compromise involved when you first slip on an engagement ring, mostly because no two people are alike – he likes to leave his washing pile until its up to the ceiling, while she insists on lining up the coke cans in the fridge – but there’s a dividing difference between compromise and sacrifice. One is something you give up begrudgingly and perhaps still do in secret, when he’s not looking (shopping bags hidden in the wardrobe) the other is something that affects you and your own personal happiness. No one should ever have to give up something for the one they love. Sure, we could all do with a little change here and there but having to really change, to be something or someone you don’t want to be, can only ever lead to one thing…regret. The heartbreaking news of little Kyla and her family’s murder in Robina was evidence enough that we need to start looking at how we can improve family relations – especially in the case of a marriage or relationship breakdown. Divorce is now commonplace in our society. Blame it on technology, blame it on liberation, blame it on whatever you like, but the statistics are evident. Gone are the times when a marriage would last forever – these days, you’re lucky if you make it past the first 10 years. But what is going wrong? Why are so many people unhappy? Why are so many people turning to verbal abuse, violent outbursts and worse still, murder? There’s now a poor little boy, not even two, who has been orphaned. He’s lost his whole family before he’s even five. And why? Well, that’s a question for the courts to answer but someone somewhere is letting these families down. People shouldn’t be killed in order for our government agencies to become more involved with these broken families. The system has let this little boy down and now he’ll never know his own family. Yes, change is one thing, but sacrifice is another altogether...and that sacrifice shouldn’t have to be a life.

Milestone birthdays – mountains or molehills?

es, last month I became a tricenarian and despite my optimistic nature, I forged into a new decade with nostalgia for my 20’s, mixed with a hint of anticipation for the years that lay ahead. With my mind firmly on the subject I decided to enquire as to how the world around us describes the act of “ageing”. The Oxford dictionary describes aging as ‘The process of change in the properties of a material occurring over a period, either spontaneously or through deliberate action.’ Does this mean we have some degree of control of the process or in the words of Bette Midler, ‘After thirty, a body has a mind of its own.’ Not long ago, I was trying to explain to my 20-year-old hairdresser what it feels like to be turning 30. It’s like this, I said, I’m going to tell you something about getting older that you may not know, and it’s indisputably true just ask any of your clients over the age of 30. The age I am, is not the age I feel and I’m pretty sure that if you’re 30, 40, 50 or even 60, you understand the disconnect. Take how I spent my recent coming-of-age celebrations: One half was spent in Sydney with a group of my closest gal pals and amongst the giggling group, I most definitely didn’t feel old, especially as I sang karaoke out the top of a stretch limo going over Sydney Harbour Bridge. The thrill and excitement from the act left me feeling alive, invigorated and yes, perhaps even younger. As many of you already know, one of the most important factors in feeling youthful is maintaining good health, If you can throw in exercise, fun and laughter you automatically feel more vigorous than the person next to you who can’t or wont dig out their inner child. My mother, who is exactly 30 years older than me, recently revealed that her 30’s were her favourite years, when she felt the most comfortable in her skin, however she passed by those years of happiness without even knowing it. With her impending sixth decade ahead, emotions are mixed as she remembers her mother at that age, along with the bathroom mirror not reflecting what she feels inside. In 1995, there was a study conducted of women in America between the ages of 5574 and the majority of them revealed they felt on an average 12 years younger than they actually were. Studies in Germany and China produced similar results. July 2011
GetIt_july11_10_ingrids col.indd 10
I must say it’s lovely when someone thinks I’m not yet 30, which is happening less and less often, however I expect that as this temple I inhabit continues to mature, I’ll come to accept the contrast of looking one age and feeling another, just as my mother has and her mother before her, making it all a part of the human experience. As a former model, I’ve seen first hand the importance of youth in the modelling industry and while I participated in it, I never really felt engulfed by it. I recently had an epiphany at a fashion parade, I knew I had now entered another kettle of fish when half the audience were over 60 and two were wearing oxygen masks! After 30, you begin noticing the disconnect between feeling ‘forever young’ and the reality of time creeping up on you. Your looks begin to change and by change, I mean you suddenly have to make decisions about how much control you want to exert over aging. You can decide that you want to hold on to your youth by any means possible in which a good cosmetic surgeon enters the mix or you can decide that you’ll only tinker with the aging process, letting nature take it’s course. To close off my first column, I’d like to share
“I’ll come to accept the contrast of looking one age and feeling another, just as my mother has and her mother before her...” with you one of the most important lessons I’ve learnt in my first 30 years, which is to celebrate life. It rings so true and in the words of Abraham Lincoln, a self educated child from a poor family who went on to become the 16th president of the united States: “It’s not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years.” Too bad most of us have to wait to be grown-ups to figure that one out.

No more uNsightly veiNs! Have you got veins on your legs that you cover with pants and tights? Maybe you’ve got veins on your face that you disguise with makeup? There are treatment options available and they are more affordable, safe and effective than you might think… Leg Veins it has become possible to treat virtually all abnormal leg veins with sclerotherapy but for larger, thicker blue leg veins, laser surgery may be required. sclerotherapy is generally reserved for leg veins and is a simple treatment which takes only a few minutes. a solution known as sclerosant, is injected into the abnormal vein with tiny needles. this causes the vein to shrink down and the internal lining of the vein to become inflamed. a full length nylon compression stocking is then worn on the leg for up to two weeks, causing the veins to flatten. because the wall of the vein is inflamed from the sclerosant, the vein walls stick together, shutting off the blood flow through the vein. spider veins are visible because blood is flowing through them so once they are closed down and empty of blood they are no longer visible. the blood now goes through other normal veins and the unsightly red/blue veins are gone.
sclerotherapy is an ideal winter treatment simply because wearing stockings is more comfortable in the cooler weather. unfortunately, surgery and sclerotherapy do not offer a permanent solution to leg vein problems, if you have the genetic tendency to have leg veins. this may mean you will require further treatments every few years. these are usually much simpler and shorter treatments than the initial one. sclerotherapy is safer than the dated surgical treatment of leg vein ‘stripping’. there is no need for anaesthetic and no cutting or stitching involved.

It’s France in festival as Sofitel Broadbeach prepares to celebrate the revolution of France with Bastille Day revelry.
Let them eat cake! The French certainly know how to throw a soiree and they usually need little excuse. However, French hotelier Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach is currently preparing for one of the largest annual festivals on the French calendar – Bastille Day. Held on July 14, this iconic celebration commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, and the subsequent rise of the French revolution. In homage to this historic event, Madames and Monsieurs are invited to an opulent evening of French festivities for $165 per person at the hotel’s signature restaurant and lounge bar, Room81. WHAT IS BASTILLE DAY? On the morning of July 14, 1789, a group formed of craftsmen and salesmen decided to fight back and broke into the Invalides to steal weapons. The mob stole 28,000 rifles there, however no powder was to be found. The crowd knew that a pile of powder was stocked in the Bastille, a prison that was a symbol of the King’s absolute and arbitrary power. So they decided to attack it. At the time of the storming, the Bastille was only guarded by a few soldiers. There were 80 “invalides”, veteran soldiers wounded in the field and around 30 grenadiers from the Swiss mercenary regiments. Marquis Bernard-Rene de Launay was at the time governor of the “Invalides”. The crowd was not big enough to impress the guards. The Marquis de Launay,
“Is this a revolt?...” “No Majesty, it’s a revolution” fearing a growing anger among the revolutionaries, accepted nevertheless to meet some of their representatives inside the prison. He hoped to buy time, as he was expecting a rescue team to arrive shortly to help him secure his castle. But the negotiations ended when a group of revolutionaries entered the Bastille. The guards were ordered to fire, killing hundreds of people. The path of the revolt completely changed when the rescue team showed up and decided not to fight against, but rather with, the mob. With their canons and their professional

soldier skills, they brought victory to the people of France agains Louis xVI’s guards in a few hours. At 4pm, the Marquis de Launay surrendered and let the people enter the Bastille. The guards were violently killed and the Marquis de Launay was beheaded, with his head then put on a stake and carried all over the city as a sign of victory. There weren’t many prisoners in the Bastille at the time of the storming; only seven people were freed. That very night, 800 men began to destroy the Bastille. Some historians found the diary of the King. On that day, July 14, 1789, he wrote only one thing, “Nothing”. That was the result of his day’s hunting. When the Duc de Liancourt informed the King of what happened at the Bastille, the King asked his advisor, ‘Is this a revolt?’ and he was answered, ‘No, Majesty, this is a revolution”.

If the skin isn’t crisp enough, cook for a further five minutes under a hot oven grill, being careful it doesn’t burn. Rest the pork for 10 minutes before serving. Blanch the bok choy in a large saucepan of boiling water until tender, then drain. Gently warm the eggplant relish. To serve, place a large spoonful of the warm eggplant relish in the centre of each serving plate with the bok choy alongside. Carve the pork and arrange two to three over the relish. Drizzle with the warm jus then scatter over the crispy garlic. and raisins. Store in the freezer. Alternatively, transfer to a shallow metal tray and freeze, whisking every couple of hours until creamy and frozen. To prepare the tarte tatin, preheat the oven to 190°C ‘combi steam’ with 30% moisture. Combine the sugar and 60ml (¼ cup) water in 28cm non stick frypan and stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil and boil without stirring until the syrup turns a dark caramel colour. Immediately remove from the heat and carefully stir in the rum. Return the pan to low heat and stir until smooth, then add the cream and bring to the boil. Remove from heat. Arrange sliced banana in concentric circles on top of the caramel. Cover with pastry and brush with beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden. Remove the from the oven, and while still hot, carefully invert onto a large platter. Serve with a spoonful of rum and raisin ice cream.

social cOmmENT storm in a d-cup From a helpless wannabe TV star having her ‘two companions’ compared to a couple of potatoes in a sack to an Iphone application that lets you give yourself a ‘temporary’ boob job...this month is all about boobies. They have lots of uses, bossoms. Even though sometimes they might get in the way when you’re trying to touch your toes, they come in handy when you need to feed your baby, work well as a coffee table when you need one pronto, help fill out a snug little dress and double as ‘fun bags’ when...well, you know when. But why do we feel the need to attack anyone who has ones that are either too big, too small, too saggy, too old, too veiny, lop-sided or even the wrong colour? There’s so many ways to make them bigger. From implants to push-up bras, removable gel inserts (‘chicken fillets’, which I happened to pass, lying lonely on the footpath the other morning, possibly after a big night out and a hastened need for discarding). And now even a clever Iphone application that lets you take a torso pic of yourself, move the little nipple thingamejigs around and then pick your implant size – and hallelujah...you’ve got an instant boob job! The adjustment, unfortunately, only lasts as long as the photo you paste on your facebook profile, but who cares? Which brings me to bubbly blonde DWTS contestant Brynne Edleston, who’s proven a ratings drawcard with a huge audience tuning in to watch shimmy her way across the stage. Does it matter this lovely girl married a bloke old enough to be her dad? Host Sonia Kruger thinks so, flinging a mean jibe at Brynne after her first go. ‘I think it’s nice you get along so well with your dad,’ she told an already teary-eyed Brynne in the green room after the judges’ panning. Sonia, did you know the whole of Australia heard what you just said? Oh, you thought you were funny, sorry... missed that. And the judges, even before Sonia, had their go too, verbalising their displeasure at the poor girl’s dancing attempts – and her ample bosom – saying she looked like a sack of potatoes rolling around on the floor when her ‘assets’ kept getting in the way. Are you judging a dance contest or some stupid reality show? This girl doesn’t claim to be a dancer. She doesn’t even think she’s an entertainer. Hell, she’s just gone on the show for a bit of fun. Give her a damn break. She doesn’t want to be thin-as-a-rake and is happy to flaunt her lovely boobies. Why not? Does it matter if she has a great set that might jiggle a little as she foxtrots her way around the room? Nope. Does it matter that she married a guy who is a few decades her senior? Nope. Is she happy? Well, she sure seems it...hows about you judges just keep your sharp-tongued mouths shut!

In a family portrait... In a perfect world, a family portrait will tell the truth. In a realistic world, a family portrait is often a reminder of what was, what should be…and rarely, what is.
O
nce, long ago, there lived a perfect family. Behind the immaculate lawns and an equally perfectlymaintained white picket fence, were two parents with three kids and their overweight labrador dog – all living together in harmony. But that picture has long been broken. In 2009, Australia experienced almost 50,000 marriage breakdowns. For every third ‘I do’ there was a guaranteed ‘I don’t’ hovering on the parameter, with one in three marriages failing. But what the statistics don’t show is what lies beneath the true devastation – the collapse of the family unit and how it affects children from broken families. Long ago, the term ‘broken family’ didn’t even exist. Neither did ‘co-parenting’. But now those terms seem to factor in the everyday lives of modern day society. Following a marriage collapse, children can be left floating in limbo between legal documents and a desire for family cohesion. While their parents are faced with life-changing decisions as well as mounting financial matters, while attempting to cope with the stress of a rapidly-deteriorating relationship. Voted in the top three most stressful things to ever experience, marriage breakdowns can push people to their limits, often eventuating in psychologically-pressurised weekly therapist visits, family court and custody battles – or in extreme cases – murder. On May 15 this year, five-year-old Kyla Rogers was taken from her Robina home on the Gold Coast. Kyla’s mother Tania Simpson and the couple’s friend Antony Way, were murdered and left on the floor of her apartment, covered in stab wounds. Kyla’s kidnapper was later revealed to be her father, July 2011

who police later discovered in his car in New South Wales, with his little girl. The man had allegedly gassed both himself and Kyla inside his car. What lies beneath this sickening and needless crime is not just the violent and tragic act itself, but how mental health or domestic uncertaintly could befall a father who claimed to love his daughter, leading him to perform such an horrific act. On August 1, 2010, the nation grieved for six-year-old Kiesha Abrahams – who disappeared from her mount Druitt home in Sydney’s West. A hysterical Kristi Abrahams reported her daughter missing when she
former husband. The 34-year-old has two sons – six-year-old Tristan and three-yearold Blake – and is fighting to keep both her mental sanity and her children’s well-being. “My ex-husband and I are going through some difficult procedures right now, fighting for our own rights but disagreeing over everything. I’ve had to see a therapist because without that mental stability and support, I don’t know if I could have got through it. “I will fight for what’s best for my boys, but I have learnt that in order to do that...I must look after myself too. I always looked down on people who turned into emotional wrecks during and after marriage break-ups, but now I can see how easy it is to actually lose control of yourself and your emotional stability.” Victoria is just one of the many people experiencing what is possibly the most traumatic experience of their lives. “Your family should be like a blanket no one can take away. It should stay with you through the good and the bad and be there to support and love you. Of course the boys’ father and I love our kids so much, but it scares me to think they aren’t going to have that tight blanket around them – rather one that’s torn right down the middle.” From extreme cases like Kyla and Kiesha, to everyday battles similar to Victoria’s, it’s apparent in today’s society, the trauma that comes with a marriage breakdown is devastating. Children being forced to adjust to situations they are incapable of understanding
“I will fight for what’s best for my boys, but I have learnt that in order to do that...I must look after myself too.” discovered her bed empty at 10am that morning. Kristi told police she feared Kiesha had been kidnapped or had wandered off during the night. Nine months later, Kristi and her partner Robert Smith were charged with the little girl’s murder. Both Kiesha and Kyla were victims of a family breakdown. Two young girls, yet to embark on their journey into adulthood – their lives cut short by a broken family’s trauma. SOCIETY REAL-LIFE
or comprehending at a young age, exposed to a new life with rostered schedules of parental visitations and domestic uncertainty. Modern society’s children are now being exposed to emotional burdens that are offen too great for their still-developing mental ability. But yet, as hard as it is for the children, parents are also driven to extremes in order to cope with the complexity of their crumbling lives. When the collapse of a family causes the disintegration of a support structure integral to the very basic human survival instinct, people can be driven to desperate measures – like ‘Mike’ the man who staged a protest on Sydney Harbour Bridge in order to get equal rights for fathers of broken families. The end of a marriage can be a blessing in disguise or an obvious and much needed lifealtering decision to end a union, that perhaps, was never meant to have eventuated in the first place. But sometimes it isn’t a happily ever after. Sometimes behind closed doors, is the tearing apart of a family that leads to the tragic and unrepairable breaking of a family portrait. MEN of Hollywood They’re brooding, they’re talented and are every bit the much lauded object of our affection...ladies, we bring you tinseltown’s leading men.
Bradley Cooper
daniel craig
We know the 6’1” hunk from his character Phil, in The Hangover, but Bradley Cooper has been around much longer than that. In 1998, he starred in episodes of Sex and the City as one of Carrie’s wannabe love interests and also played an arrogant preppy toff in The Wedding Crashers. Graduating from the Honors English program at Georgetown University in 1997, the star – who grew up living next to a movie theatre – moved to New York City to enroll in drama school. Bit parts in the television series Alias and movies followed but it wasn’t he starred in his coming-of-age role in The Hangover that he made it. Reportedly paid over $5m for his role in the sequel, The Hangover Part II has now well and truly earnt his spot on the world’s hottest men list.
What’s not to love about Bond? Filling the role from 2006 in Casino Royale, the 43-year-old Cheshire-born actor has been revered as one of Bond’s most debonnaire stars. With the smoothness of Sean Connery, Craig has managed to charm his way into the hearts of women, more so in his tight blue swimming trunks! Starring in African film The Power of One in 1992, the same year he had his first child Ella, Craig was voted Best Dressed Man by Esquire mag in 2006. We’d let him park his slippers under our bed any morning!
JASON STATHAM This brooding Brit was a former Olympic diver before becoming an actor and finished 12th place in the World Championships in 1992. Statham, 43, was born in Derbyshire, England and worked as a fashion model for UK label French Connection – who coincidentally, were a financial investor of the 1998 film, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels by director Guy Ritchie – landing the one-time black market dealer a part in the film. His role as stoic hard man Turkish in Snatch followed in 2000, resulting in the rugged pom becoming an international heartthrob and renowned bad boy.

RYAN GOSLING This Canadian-born star is 31, but has already stolen the hearts of women across generations with his role of Noah in The Notebook (2004) – a film that’s romantic notions rivalled that of The Titanic. The former Micky Mouse Club star (he was on the show from the age of nine) can sing too. Gosling moved to the US where he lived with co-star and singer Justin Timberlake while filming the show. A jazz guitarist, and voted one of the world’s sexiest bachelors, Gosling who has also dated his co-star Rachel McAdams twice, has his own band called Dead Man’s Bones.

CELEB SPOTLIGHT
Richard Gere There’s something about a little salt n’ pepper that seems only to add to Gere’s charm. The 61-year-old is one of five children and was born in Philadelphia. Some of the actor’s earliest head shot photos were taken by boyhood friend and then-struggling photographer Herb Ritts. Gere’s first major role was in American Gigilo, but it was his leading roles in films – An Officer And a Gentleman in 1982 (which John Travolta had previously turned down) and Pretty Woman in 1990 – that made him a household name. With his smooth-as-silk accent, Gere, who was once married to supermodel Cindy Crawford, has managed to keep his film career soaring high through four decades.
RYAN PHILLIPPE
Entertainment Press/shutterstick.com
Cinema Festival/shutterstick.com
Known more for his indie film roles, Phillippe, 36, got his first break on TV soap One Life to Live playing an ostracised gay teen. The hunky star married his Cruel Intentions co-star Reese Witherspoon and the couple had two children together, but it was his apparent fling with our own Aussie star Abbie Cornish that allegedly broke up the couple’s marriage. A Frank Sinatra fan, it was his role in Stop Loss (2008) that displayed the handsome star’s brawn as well as his acting ability, coupled with humility for the character he played. “You felt like a monster. We were there in full gear, with these assault rifles, on what’s akin to their Christmas. We were barging into peoples’ actual homes to shoot those scenes. I felt incredibly uncomfortable and ashamed at the time.”
George Clooney 25
GetIt_July11_24-25_men of hollywood.indd 25
Brad Pitt Initially a model, Brad Pitt, 48, has been voted one of the Sexiest Men in History and after his role in the 1994 film Legends of the Fall, was voted People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. Either dating or marrying his co-stars became a mainstay for Pitt, who has been linked to Juliette Lewis, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie. The star – who also has his pilot’s license – not only has six kids (three of which are not his biological children) but is involved in countless humanitarian causes…what could be more sexier than a bloke who’s a family man at heart and wants to save the world?!
Born in Kentucky, the 50-year-old actor once bet Nicole Kidman $10,000 he wouldn’t have kids by 40. She had to cough up. He returned the money saying double or nothing that he wouldn’t have any by the time he was 50. Seems he won that bet too. But while his reluctance to marry again (he was married in 1989) endures him a spot on the Sexiest Man Alive list, the star is most loyal to his craft playing a raft of sexy, clever and brooding males over the past three decades. It was his role in TV drama ER in 1984, which first brought our attention to this suave gent before roles in Oceans Eleven, Three Kings and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Clooney had auditioned five times for the role of JD in Thelma & Louise that eventually went to best mate Brad Pitt. July 2011

focus relationships
I
t’s a tale as old as time; woman meets man, they fall in love and are torn apart by separate religions. Whether imposed by family, or by their own belief system, an interfaith relationship often requires more work by the couple than of those who share a mutual religion, because of the faith barriers. in today’s global village, with ever-diminishing borders, distance no longer defines who we meet, fall in love with or, in some cases, marry. With the launch of the internet and social networking sites, connecting people from across all religions, races and belief systems, the result is a thriving cross-cultural society. the traditional social restrictions of the
But as distinctions between denominations fade, other factors like the division of housework and paid work, and in some cases, highlight how religion is less relevant in today’s family unit than it used to be. still, a religiously tolerant society does not necessarily make a happy marriage. religion isn’t just about attending church (or mosque) every sunday and praying when the priest tells you to. there are shared opinions on everything from how to raise your children and what to do in your leisure time, to what to spend money on, what friendships you hold on to and, at times, it can even influence where you live. Brisbane landscaper nathan Bennett was raised in the Church of england, but chose to convert to islam in 2002, knowing that his girlfriend wouldn’t marry him unless he did. Born into a strict asian family, she lived her life according to islamic traditions and insisted that he adopt her religion if they were to marry. about a year after his conversion, nathan began to doubt his adopted islamic faith. he discussed his uncertainties with his wife and three weeks later, she suggested they separate. at the time, the couple had two young sons and nathan was reluctant to divorce on their account. their different beliefs continue to drive nathan and his wife apart and create tension concerning their children’s upbringing – a sensitive casualty of an interfaith marriage. sarah hasley, a former police officer and mum-of-three, met her future husband – also on the force – 12 years ago and was entirely an athiest at the time. the man she fell in love with was a strictly devout mormon and she knew, in order for their relationship to transpire into anything more than a friendship, she would have to convert to his religion. eventually she was baptised at a mormon temple and began conforming to his beliefs – banishing alcohol, caffiene and following her new partner’s religious path. When the couple married at a local temple, sarah’s family and friends were forced to wait outside the building as their friend and daughter was married in a private mormon-only service. to this day, it is still a sacrifice sarah says she struggles to contend with. When two people from different religions fall in love and plan a life together, the implications can be far-reaching – but not just for the couple – for their extended families as well. these couples don’t often practice a textbook version of their religion, rather choosing to share experience and knowledge from one other instead, showing that open communication is key and can help deter problems rising from crossing the great religious divide. Words: Ingrid Bonnor
“When people from different religions fall in love and plan a life together, the implications can be far-reaching...” past are breaking down and with each new generation, ties to religion or ethical groups are being explored. today, people are more open and willing to marry someone from a different cultural background or faith than themsleves as it is becoming more socially acceptable. Josh and rebecca Markson are one such couple. rebecca was an atheist prior to meeting Josh, but converted to Catholicism to marry Josh under the credence of the Catholic Church. Before the couple’s 2004 wedding, they had never discussed what faith they’d raise their children – choosing to focus their attention on other aspirations like saving for a house and building their careers. after the birth of their first daughter eve in 2006, Josh began to worry about the fact she had not been baptised. he believed if something happened to eve, she wouldn’t go to heaven unless she had been communicated. this belief disturbed his wife and eventually caused a rift within their relationship. the battle over eve’s religion continued three years into the marriage and was intensified by the inclusion of Josh’s parents. eventually the family came to a mutual agreement that while rebecca spent her sunday mornings tucked up in bed, Josh would take eve to church and when she was old enough, she could make her own decisions as to which fatih, if any, she would choose. Deciding how to raise children in interfaith households can be difficult; most families work things out settling on one religion, a combination of both, or none at all. these unions blend extended families from diverse backgrounds and help to make australian society more integrated and more tolerant. www.getitmagazine.com.au

this couple has been together for years, have two children and were engaged in January 2009. rumours circulated about a possible secret marriage between the very private pair while they were planting trees in israel. as far as we know, naomi hasn’t converted to liev’s Jewish faith, however these two stars seem to be happy to keep the details of their relationship secret .
Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky.
the Catholic daughter of former president Bill Clinton and senator hillary Clinton, married her Jewish boyfriend from College. although Chelsea hasn’t converted as of yet, it’s been rumoured that she is considering it.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
angelina Jolie has remained vague on her religious beliefs saying, ‘there doesn’t need to be a God for me, there’s something in people that’s spiritual.’ and that is fine with baby daddy Brad pitt, who doesn’t seem to mind being Jolie’s chosen spirit even though he was raised as a southern Baptist.
Russell Brand and Katy Perry.
Womanising was russell Brand‘s religion before meeting and falling for singer Katy perry. the playboy may have changed his ways, however it seems russell is sticking to atheism even though perry was raised by two ministers in an extremely evangelical household. Katy started her career as Katy hudson, a gospel singer while russell’s early days were plagued with sex and drug addiction.

“This is a very rare opportunity to get into the notoriously competitive fashion industry,” says sara. “This kind of position would give a young student an amazing chance to get valuable experience as a stylist in the real world of fashion. what we are looking for is someone who has a keen sense of style and a genuine interest in the industry.” The finals came down to three students who presented the most outstanding storyboards, who then had to compete in a high-pressure two-hour time trial challenge where they selected a rack of clothes and were each given a model, photographer and studio to complete a fashion shoot. “we feel this gives them creative licence, along with a realistic challenge in the world of shopping centre styling. They got to really understand the leg work involved in styling.” Alice starts her new job next month.

Bridal fever has hit Hollywood and it’s all about glamour. We’ve collected some of the red carpet’s finest brides – both onscreen and off – to inspire the style of your big day.

he entire world tuned in to their TV sets on April 29, as dashing Prince William wed his long-standing girlfriend Catherine Middleton. Not since his mother Lady Diana married William’s father Prince Charles in 1981, had the palace seen such a large following. And so once again, the royal family has found a style muse in Princess Catherine. They are the tinseltown weddings that have inspired, for decades, the style of modern brides. From Grace Kelly and her iconic cinched-waist silk gown (which was also the base from which Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton took her inspiration for Catherine Middleton’s gown) in her 1956 wedding to Monaco royal Prince Rainier, to Jacqueline Bouvier’s layered silk taffeta gown, Hollywood has long been providing the world with iconic bridal style.

One of the biggest and oldest social habits around is smoking. Once an accepted habit, smoking has been identified as the biggest risk factor for major disease. We have seen more heart attacks, heart disease in general, strokes and lung cancers to name a few, as almost every organ in the body can be affected by smoking. People today live very stressful lifestyles and find smoking to be a mechanism of escape or relaxation. Others have grown up in families that smoke and view it as part of a daily lifestyle. Some smoke as a social habit with friends in social circles. And with an increase in smoking in young teenagers we further identify smoking as a sense of further liberation or freedom. Smoking remains a medical challenge today with doctors

Winter Chill Living and working together is no easy feat but leading chef Daran Glasgow and his wife Leesa have it down-pat at their award-winning and highly-popular eatery, Chill on Tedder.
T
edder Ave in Main Beach has long been synonymous with good restaurants and a lively hype but for daran and Leesa Glasgow – owners of Chill dining and Wine Bar – this niche pocket of dining has become their second home as their passion and creativity have seen the couple lead one of the Coast’s finest restaurants down a path of increasing success. originally a Laundromat – aptly named Sisters and Suds – Chill on Tedder has celebrated numerous awards since its inception by restaurateur and establisher Marie Stephens who created the relaxed, sophisticated venue in 2002. Head chef daran and his wife Leesa (Chill’s manager) took over the restaurant from its former proprietors Rick and Michelle Adams in 2006, after an offer was put to them Leesa said they simply couldn’t refuse. “They came to us with this offer and we had to beg, steal and borrow to get the business. I used my home as collateral to secure a loan so we could make it our own. We knew this was an opportunity we couldn’t let go of.” The couple met while working at Brisbane’s Restaurant B – she was studying psychology and working at the restaurant part-time – while he was head chef and soon put the establishment on the map, winning numerous awards. daran was then offered a position by Bonnie Rodwell to work as head chef at Tamborine’s hidden jewel, Songbirds. “Bonnie originally didn’t really like couples working together but we convinced her otherwise and I eventually came on as manager.” This gave the couple www.getitmagazine.com.au
GetIt_july11_42_chill.indd 42
the grounding they needed before taking over their own restaurant. Chill is renowned for its fine dining, with a menu that boasts divinely decadent creations, hand-crafted by daran each night, and with all dishes being cooked to order, perfection and enjoyment are guaranteed. Some of their signature dishes that have seen them win countless awards, including fine-dining and Best Chef owner in 2009, are the foie gras assiette – a dish comprising of ballotine of quail pocketed with foie gras and porcini mushroom, oven-roasted baby carrot purée, truffle jus; foie gras parfait, warmed brioche, beetroot relish, micro herbs, white port and peppercorn reduction. And their winterwarming title dish of mustard and herb encrusted edeowie lamb backstrap potato mille feuille, oven-roasted carrot purée, baby beetroot, buttered swiss chard, confit tomato minted pan juices, finished with a delectable desert of coffee and frangelico crème brûlée chocolate and banana doughnuts, vanilla bean ice cream – personifying comfort food at it’s best. And if you’re feeling indulgent, follow that with a mauri gorgonzola piccante. With an extensive wine list comprising of some of the finest tipples from around the
“We have the same work ethic to provide an unmatched dining experience...” world, Chill on Tedder has also won numerous awards for their top picks, ensuring them a spot at the top of both local and interstate diners’ selection. So what is the method to maintaining a healthy relationship when you both work and live together? “Well we’re both perfectionists,” says Leesa. “And we have the same work ethic to provide an unmatched dining experience. Sometimes it’s hard with the boys…[the couple has two sons – Ethan, 4 and Leon, 2]. Well, it’s harder for daran, because he works such long shifts but he spends an hour or two with them between the lunch and dinner shifts, plus we have Sundays off together.” And it seems the couple’s hard work has

Come on over to Cova Coast elites and Northern Gold Coasters alike, joined local area Councillor Grant Pforr and the Australand team for a night of glitz, glamour and a glimpse of the new release Cova development.
F
illing the newly revamped Cova Sales office, the crowd clinked champagne glasses and sank their teeth into tasty canapés while being entertained by fire-twirlers, a soothing string ensemble and the comedic flair of Gold FM’s Richard Fowler. “What a sensational location this is. I was driving through here in November thinking ‘it’s so quiet at peaceful – no Schoolies, no chance of somebody building a 50 story high-rise in your front yard and ruining your marina views – it really is a beautiful setting,” says the witty breakfast show host. “And it’s amazing how much this has changed over the years. I remember back in 1981 I was given an invitation to an opening of a theme park, and I can remember thinking, ‘what the hell is a theme park? Not only that, it’s in the middle of nowhere!’ Some bloke called John Longhurst had been out there with a bulldozer building this amazing place.” Developed on a 32-hectare site close to Sanctuary Cove, Hope Island Resort, shopping facilities, three championship golf courses and waterways, Cova will feature a marina and three lakes, which will provide 1.5km of water frontage, while landscaped parklands, walking paths and bikeways will provide community connectivity. “I think it’s fairly safe to say, and I’m sure Councillor Grant Pforr would agree with me, that this is actually now the middle of the Gold Coast,” adds Richard. “We’ve got Brisbane just up the July 2011

road, the Gold Coast Airport just down the road, we’ve got Dreamworld, Movieworld, the Gold Coast Marina just around the corner, and enough golf courses to keep Tiger Woods out of trouble! This is a truly iconic location and it’s pretty easy to see why so many of you have already made this your home.” Australand’s General Manager of the Queensland Residential Division Richard Fulcher couldn’t agree more. Speaking of his recent trip to Las Vegas, Richard says: “It really hit home to me that the big difference between Vegas and the Gold Coast is that the Gold Coast has a soul and it actually embraces people and its community. We really see Cova as a continuation of that.” Expressing his delight for the projects ahead,

Councillor Grant Pforr quips: “Council has finally done something right! Anybody that I can tell and sell to, I’ve said ‘buy in Hope Island!’ And if you can hang on for five or 10 years, you’re going to make an absolute killing. We’re all so passionate about the moving forward and Cova is a very important part of that.” Homesites at Cova are now open to the public and selling from as little as $249,000. to speak your mind openly rather than letting your unhappiness fester. Anxiety and frustration will be highly-charged if you don’t get some perspective on the part you play in creating your life.
LIBRA 23 September-22 October Change is on the wind as new opportunities in work blow your way. A showdown with a boss may occur, a shift in your current work or a completely different occupation may be presented to you. Surrendering to the currents will be the easiest choice in the long run as it feels like you have no choice but to fly forward. SCORPIO 23 October-21 November You are feeling ‘all over the shop’ this month, and I don’t mean in a spending spree. The universe is pushing you this way and that and at times it may be hard to get your bearings. In actuality you are not being shoved off course you are simply being given new opportunities to fully enjoy your life. Looking back, you will be grateful for the ‘enforced’ change. CANCER 21 June-22 July Strut your stuff as confidence and a seemingly endless supply of energy flows through you, creating opportunities and a natural magnetism in your life. You will feel the need to be close to home but venturing afar will bring you more rewarding experiences. LEO 23 July-22 August Issues are beginning to rise like the bubbles in your glass of French Champagne. Drinking the whole bottle will not help the situation! Be brave, be bold and face your challenges as they arise, preparing yourself for deep questions regarding your future to surface. VIRGO 23 August-22 September It’s true that others can notice when your behaviour is passive-aggressive, even if you think you have it all under control. You’re better
SAGITTARIUS 22 November-21 December This is a perfect time to seek adventure in far off lands as your desire to encounter new people, exotic cultures and different experiences peaks. The hard work you’ve been doing over the past few months will pay off allowing you to realise your dreams as you book your ticket to paradise leaving the everyday behind CAPRICORN 22 December-19 January This month Romeo may appear if he hasn’t already moved in! You will be feeling amorous and exceptionally romantic, as relationships are a main feature. Will you or wont you? That is the question, as you feel both the highs of beautiful unrestrained love and the lows of uncertainty and doubt. Allow your heart to guide you as you find your centre.
LIFESTYLE STARS
AQUARIUS 20 January-18 February You are the star of the show as you shine your divine light on those around you. You may in fact, find yourself in the public eye or at the very least becoming a legend in your own lunch box! Glam it up and dress to impress as you make a lasting impact on influential people opening the doors to fabulous opportunities. PiSCES 19 February-20 March Let go of the need to have all the answers as you carve a new niche in your life. Sometimes you can’t see the way forward but don’t let that stop you! This month you are urged to have faith and trust that all will turn out just the way you want, even if you don’t have a crystal ball to see the future. Your perseverance will pay off ARIES 21 March-19 April Those pesky skeletons in the closet will be rattling their bones this month as unfinished business comes back to haunt you. You are a moment-to-moment girl of course, but this may mean you continue to charge on ahead without addressing the past. Use your initiative and spring clean those closets now, otherwise you may find yourself in a nightmare that you can’t seem to wake up from! TAURUS 20 April-20 May Change can be good for you even though your instincts tell you it’s fraught with danger. How will your life ever change for the better if you try to keep everything the same? You intuitively know how to connect into the natural rhythms and cycles of life so try to relax and loosen your hold, even if it is one finger at a time. GEMINI 21 May-20 June Money, money, money is the theme this month. Acquiring a balanced perspective will serve you well as you find the middle ground between over-spending and obsessively counting every cent. Slow down around your finances and ask for professional help if needed and I don’t mean just from your hairdresser!

LAST WORD
ASHER KEDDIE On screen, on stage, on-the-ball.
ON-SCREEN
When Asher Keddie fills our television screens, she has the tendency to blow us away. With her pastel blonde bob bouncing at her shoulders, this bright-eyed actress is no stranger to the camera. We first fell in love with Keddie in Australian drama Love My Way. In 2009, Keddie featured in Channel Nine’s Underbelly, in the lead role of Liz Cruickshank, a determined policewoman submerged in a misogynistic and ‘blokey’ world. Keddie has worked alongside hunky Hugh Jackman in Wolverine and Richard Roxburgh in Ten’s critically acclaimed tele-series Hawke. In 2010, Keddie hit the jackpot in Ten’s new series Offspring, playing Nina Proudman, a 30-something obstetrician, learning to juggle her chaotic family with the unpredictability of modern life. Keddie’s most recent success is ABC’s telemovie The Paper Giants, which saw her take on the role of Ita Buttrose under the watchful eye of, well, Ita Buttrose. “I am not normally a nervous person but that day, I was!” she said during an interview. “I wondered how I was going to concentrate on what I was doing with Ita sitting behind the camera, watching me be her.”
ON-STAGE
Throw her in front of a camera and she will shine. Toss her onto a stage beneath the intimidation of flaring spotlights and she will amaze. In 1998, Keddie found her calling in the acting arena, making her theatre debut for the Melbourne Theatre Company in Patrick Marber’s Closer. Keddie went on to appear in theatre productions Dangereuses, Cyrano de Bergerac, Les Liaisons, Great Expectations, The Seagull, Birthrights and Hannie Rayson’s Life After George. In 2007, Keddie starred in The Glass Soldier alongside her now-husband, actor and musician Jay Bowen. The two stars exchanged nuptials that year and Keddie says without him, she wouldn’t be the confident, July 2011

happy person she is today. “He’s had a huge influence on me. If I’m being a bit intense, he diffuses that in a very honest way, usually with humour. He makes me laugh at myself every day.”
ON-THE-BALL
April this year saw Keddie grace the Golden Logies in possibly the most gorgeous dress of the evening. A black, boned, lacy number that looked as if it were made for her, proving this actress is well and truly on the fashion ball. Keddie competed alongside Karl Stefanovic, Jessica Marais, Rebecca Gibney, Adam Hills and Chrissie Swan for the prestigious golden Logie, with Stefanovic taking the golden statue. In Keddie’s early years, she received a number of award nominations including Best Actress in a Television Series in 2006, and consecutive Logie Award nominations in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, Keddie won the Most Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor and Most Popular Actress in 2010, for her role in Offspring. As Keddie’s popularity soars in her role as the hapless Nina, this star will shine evermore brightly as one of Australia’s finest young talents.
