This month’s full of fab finds – from food, films and our fave TV shows, to great Aussie poetry and even free movie tickets!

books Walk Thru My World by Graham Perkins Poetry can convey so much; humour, compassion, wisdom, and in times of distress or sadness, one can seek solace in good literature. All this comes to the fore in Graham Perkins’ debut book, Walk Thru My World. Described as ‘down-to-earth Aussie poetry by a true-blue man of the land’, Walk Thru My World is a fabulous collection of stories from the city to the outback, written in verse and taken straight from life itself. Weaving together verses for the young and young at heart, Graham has crafted a

music Unbroken by Demi Lovato Released: September 20 Unbroken is the third studio album for this talented singer-song writer. Since starting her career with Disney, Demi has forged a flourishing musical career for herself, but this didn’t come without its struggles. Unbroken captures the essence of these hard times, as well as the good, and serves as a fitting description for Demi. Her strength and her spirit are liberated in the album’s first single, ‘Skyscraper’ and it goes without saying that Demi channels the emotions she endured in the past year, including her infamous rehab stint, into an album which will likely be all the better because of it.

book you’ll find impossible to put down. With each stroke of his pen in prose, Graham takes every reader on his journey. Whether it be into a place of questioning as in his poem entitled Please Sir Tell Me Why, a heartfelt take on ones faith in a world without reason, or to a place where child-like innocence meets humour as in The Kid That Really Cares, a series of poems revolving around a young boy and his prayers to the Lord. Written with his years experience as a Sydney police officer and a foster parent shining through, each poem has a zest earned from life’s lessons and he passes that on to the reader with a unique modern-day Australian feel. This month’s must read that will make you laugh, cry, inspire and be inspired, while you live every day to it’s fullest!

I

’ve been extremely busy this month mingling in the Gold Coast’s social circle, trying to keep up to date with all the local sightings of international stars. The Gold Coast has been absolutely buzzing over the past month with local and international acts making our home, their playground. I’m GC Gossip Girl and I’m here to bring you the local inside goss from far and wide. Enjoy! FELLINI BRIMMING WITH STARS A multitude of celebrities have been spotted dining at Ristorante Fellini’s in the past couple of weeks, with the renowned television and movie personalities leaving diners star-struck. One of our favourite Gold Coast restaurants has now become a number one must for international superstars. Shane Bourne from Thank God You’re Here joined an array of guests including Caroline Gillmer who played gangland matriarch Judy Moran in Underbelly. Toni Collette, Rebecca Gibney, Anthony LaPaglia, Caroline Goodall, Deborah Mailman and producer Jerry Zucker were also spotted having dinner at the restaurant and claimed they will return to Fellini over the next two months, as they are currently shooting on the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales.

GC

With one eye open, an ear to the ground and her finger firmly on the Gold Coast’s pulse, nothing gets past this local lass. Follow Get it’s undercover columnist, GC Gossip Girl as she reveals the secrets of the Coast’s elite.

KEEP AN EYE OUT Naomi Watts will be on the Gold Coast for the next few weeks making her way from the southern end of the Coast towards Main Beach where she is rumoured to be staying at Palazzo Versace. Northern Coasties can expect sightings around Marina Mirage come early September. SPOTTED Fast cars, fashion and food must have been enough to attract Rebecca Gibney to Tedder Avenue to see what all the fuss was about. Spotted doing a touch of shopping just ahead of the Tedder Avenue Motorshow, I’m thrilled she is enjoying all the Coast has to offer. PLACES TO BE SEEN As promised, this Gossip Girl has been trying out lots of new and hidden waterholes and restaurants to bring you the hottest of hot spots. Amazingly one of the most hidden retreats for some of our local sporties has been Quattro Café. Hidden on the mezzanine level of the Audi Centre Gold Coast, a multitude of GC sporting stars have been spotted here recently. (They also do a great lunch so check it out!) Another must see is the new Manhattan Bar in Surfers Paradise. While not as New Yorky as first thought, they do have a fabulous cocktail list, great food and live music to entertain you all night long. So if you haven’t already been, I suggest you head out soon.

MUSIC PROFILE with Adele Rowlands-Dealey

Josh Pyke

From the air guitar at age six and the great acoustics coming from shower singing at age 10, to performing in front of over 650 people at his primary school graduation and writing his own songs at just 14, there was never any doubt this talented young gun would grow up to be a star.

T

oday, Josh Pyke is a musical pioneer. Using melody and narrative as his guide, he effortlessly paves the way through diverse elements of life, love and loss to form the essence of songs that are timeless, passionate and emphatically honest. With production credits shared between him and ARIA Award-winning Wayne Connolly, Josh’s first album, Memories & Dust, was mixed in part by Wayne in Sydney and in part by renowned music engineer Michael Brauer in New York. The path for Josh to release the album worldwide was laid out when Ivy League Records signed a deal with Island/Universal (UK) in mid-2006 using the label's managing director Dan Keeling. Needless to say, it was no mean feat for the musical dream team, but it’s not so hard to understand given Josh’s ability to write songs with such powerful melodies they manage to weave themselves under your skin and remain there for years to come. Since then, Josh has toured the UK twice, gaining a hoard of devoted fans and critical acclaim with his accomplished live performances. Back at home, Josh knit his name into the hearts and minds of Australian music fans when he burst onto the scene Down Under. His track 'Middle Of The Hill' quickly found favour with Triple J listeners, coming in at No. 19 on the annual 'Hottest 100' poll. Sold-out headline tours of the nation followed, as did tours with the likes of Eskimo Joe and Bob Evans, plus slots on the country's largest music festivals including Big Day Out, Splendour In The Grass and Falls Festival. Just one year later, Josh blew us away with his second album Chimney’s Afire

and now, with musical melodic genius running feverously through his veins, he’s released his latest album Only Sparrows. Debuting at No. 4 on the ARIA Album chart, Only Sparrows is Josh’s third album to debut top 5 in the ARIA charts – his first album Memories & Dust also came in at No. 4 upon release, while follow-up Chimney’s Afire hit the charts at an impressive No. 3. Both albums won a slew of ARIA Awards and have since gone on to achieve Gold sales. Only Sparrows looks set to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors, cementing Josh as one of Australia’s most loved and celebrated artists. ‘Clovis’ Sons’ couldn’t be a more fitting opening track for Josh’s third album. A song about achieving through struggle, the tension between fate and freewill, and the question of whether slicing the threads that bind is necessary for progression, it presents an insight into both the processes and concepts explored by Josh to create his most assured work to date. Written on the road and in New York City and, again, recorded back home with Wayne Connolly, Only Sparrows is an album that saw Josh take a leap as an artist. “From the writing process to the actual recording, I was pushing myself harder than I have in the past, trying to make the record a development, rather than a continuum,” Josh says. “I kind of think of it as the first record where I felt confident enough to take some risks.” The risks Josh talks of are relinquishing some of the control he had over his first two records. With Only Sparrows he took a step back so he could take a step forward, so to speak, to create an album that pushed him in all the right ways creatively. “In the past, I tried to play most of the instruments and really have my fingerprints all over every track,” he explains. “I don't regret that at all as I learned a lot, but I think it made the past records sound like one guy doing stuff separately, trying to sound like many guys doing stuff at the same time. On this record, I had amazing players bringing something really special to songs that I’d worked hard on writing and arranging. To me, it makes for a more cohesive record, and allowed me to get more creative, as I was taking a bird’s eye view approach a lot of the time, rather than trying to nail a piano part, or trying to play drums when I have no skills there at all,” he laughs. Also adding something new to the process was Josh’s first writing trip abroad. Following the release of Chimney’s Afire, a lot of changes took place in his life – he started playing in a band again after eight years as a solo artist and he became a father for the first time. Much of the material for Only Sparrows was written before either of these major changes took place, so by the time it came to really thinking about his third record, he felt a little removed from his www.getitmagazine.com.au

solo career, and an element of self-doubt began to creep into his craft. It was then he decided to head to the Big Apple to clear his head do some “writing and walking and thinking”. “I rented an apartment in Greenwich Village and armed with a guitar, microphone and a laptop, I wrote and demoed some more songs to the backdrop of a snow covered New York City. It snowed heavily almost every day and I trudged through beautiful, bleak cityscapes composing songs in my head and then recorded stuff at night. I got ‘No One Wants a Lover’, ‘Love Lies’, and ‘Break, Shatter, Make, Matter’ out of the trip, and really regained my confidence and perspective. I realised that the only songs I ever want to write and sing have to be songs that I can stand by for the next 20 years of my life, and that I can’t compromise on what I consider to be

“I realised that the only songs I ever want to write and sing have to be songs that I can stand by for the next 20 years of my life, and that I can’t compromise on what I consider to be the integrity of a song, and the legacy that I want to leave as a musician and also as a father.” the integrity of a song, and the legacy that I want to leave as a musician and also as a father.” That renewed enthusiasm for songwriting manifests itself on Only Sparrows, an album full to bursting with the sound of an artist who has adopted a new approach to not only his music, but life in general. The notion that we’re all a part of something bigger than ourselves colours the record, from the lyrics and music right through to the album title and artwork by James Hancock. “Only Sparrows is a paraphrasing of a line from the track ‘Clovis' Sons’ which is ‘we are only ever little sparrows on a mountainside.’ The imagery of that phrase really stays with me, and I often thought of it during writing and recording - the idea that we are all very tiny cogs in a giant machine, all trying to leave our mark in some significant and meaningful way. There’s a hopelessness to the phrase if you want to look at it that way, but I prefer to think of it from the point of view of the next line in that song which says, ‘when the wind comes up and blew away her footing, and forced her into flight’. Sometimes a kind of adversity forces us to get our courage back, and push on and out of the rut we might be in.” Only Sparrows is out now, but for the real Josh Pyke experience, catch him live at The Coolangatta Hotel when he performs with special guests Emma Louise and The Paper Kites this September 23.

Cooking in

Style

with Harvey Norman Simplicity at your finger tips....

What is induction Cooking? Induction is high speed, high power cooking 2.5 times quicker than using gas! Precision temperature capability. You can melt chocolate on low heat without needing a double boiler and you can stirfry, sear and brown with ease. Induction hot plates work on a electronic magnetic induction field, so the actual cooktop surface does not heat up, it’s the pan on top of the cooktop which becomes hot and directly heats your food; and when the pan is removed the heat generation stops. This means you cook more efficiently, without heating up the surrounding area and the kitchen. The boilovers do not hit a hot surface, so they do not burn and stick to the surface- spills simply wipe up.

Pyrolytic Ovens It is a job nobody enjoys - the cleaning of your oven interior is something most people put off until they absolutely have to, or pay somebody else to do it for them. The ultimate solution to this problem is Pyrolytic Cleaning, it will bring your oven up like new every time, with only a little residual ash to sweep from the cavity floor. How Does it Work? Very simply, when you select the pyrolytic function your oven temperature will be raised up to around 500°C for up to two hours, burning off all food and grease residue and carbonising everything to leave just a small amount of ash to wipe out. Is It Safe? The pyrolytic control also securely locks the oven door to prevent any interruption or risk of danger, and only releases once everything is cool and safe. Even your oven door will not over heat so that it is so safe for those with children September 2011

14

Pyrolytic ovens are very well-insulated and efficient, so your oven cleaning cycle costs considerably less and there are no harsh chemicals or time spent scrubbing required. Leaving you more time to do what you want to do.

Combination steam Ovens Three products in one! Steamer, convection oven and combi steamer! What are the benefits? When steaming food, the food retains its natural moisture, colour and flavour content. This is one of the healthiest ways of cooking. Steaming is not only great for your vegetables and rice but meats, eggs, desserts, reheating and more. But when you combine steam with convection heat you have the capability of preserving the moisture of your foods but also browning and baking. This function will make your scones the best every time....your roast meat the most succulent and your pastries rise and crisp! You’ve got to see it to believe it.

Harvey Norman leads the way with choice when choosing steam ovens. The Bundall store features Queensland’s largest selection of appliances set within stunning designer kitchen displays.

Method Place water and kombu together in the multiplo in-bench steamer and bring to the boil; let simmer for approximately 10 minutes and turn off power. Add in bonito flakes; wait for approximately 15 minutes until flakes disperse to the bottom and then pass the liquid through a fine-meshed sieve. Return liquid to the in-bench steamer and add soy sauce, mirin and rice wine; bring to the boil. Line the steamer basket with chopped chilli, ginger and lemongrass and then layer with fresh coriander; position the fish on top of the herbs and then zest the lime over the snapper. Cut the pak choy into half pieces and then add snow peas and Chinese broccoli to the steamer

alongside the snapper, allow to simmer for approximately 4-6 minutes. If the flesh of the snapper feels quite firm when pressed in the meatiest section the fish is ready to serve(NB: take care as steam can easily scald). To plate, arrange steamed vegetables into the centre of a large bowl and season with a little soy sauce and a squeeze of lime juice. Lift sn apper fillet out of the steamer and place on top of the greens; pour about 100ml of the broth over the fish and sea-son with a pinch of sea salt and another squeeze of lime juice. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and chopped chilli.

Lemongrass, chilli and ginger steamed snapper Asian greens, soy, kombu and dashi broth Serves 6 Snapper 6 x 160g fresh fillets of snapper (skin removed) 3 sticks lemongrass 3 chillies 120g fresh ginger 1/2 bunch coriander 3 limes (zest only)

Fashion NEWS with Adele Rowlands-Dealey

GOLD COAST GLAMOUR

Local fashionistas rejoiced as contestants from the new series of small screen favourite Project Runway flew into the Gold Coast.

T

aking in the sights and sounds, the participants drew inspiration from the sun, surf and sand on our beautiful beaches while the King of couture, Alex Perry, set the resort wear challenge. “It’s very Australian to wear resort-orientated clothing,” says design mentor Alex Perry, who joined the 10 remaining challengers at The Marriott, Surfers Paradise. “And when you think of resort, you think of Queensland, and the Gold Coast in particular, so it was the perfect place to do it.” While hopefuls snapped polaroids of colours and textures to inspire designs and fabric purchase back in Melbourne, Alex takes a couch break and assumed a similar exercise to show us how their minds might work towards some resort wear creations. “Here, I love these louvered sliding doors, the stonework on the floor, the outdoor areas, the gardens, all the daybeds,” he says. “If you get up to the rooms, you see the ocean, vegetation, panoramic views. Glamorous even though it’s warm, resort-y. It makes me think of the Greek Islands, San Tropez, the September 2011

south of France, somewhere that has a real glamour vibe.” The group, which has been whittled down after four weeks of filming, headed to Surfers Paradise Beach and Cavill Mall before they flew back to Melbourne to work in teams of two, creating two stunning outfits – a poolside glamour look that includes swimwear, and a sophisticated evening piece – on a budget of only $200. “We’ve tried to give them as many different challenges to flex their muscle in as many different forms of fashion, and resort was one of them,” Alex says. “When you watch it on television it looks easy, [but] turning out a garment that is runway ready in less than eight hours is a real challenge. It’s kind of almost easier when you give them a crazy avant-garde challenge or something that’s evening or glamorous. But when you give them just really great resort-wear, which is probably what people are going to wear more than anything else, it tests a lot of them.” Catch season three of Project Runway Monday nights at 8:30, exclusively on FOX8.

White Mouse

Political leaders, commanding officers and humble civilians across the western world pay tribute to Australian war heroine, Nancy Wake.

S

he was strong, fearless, feisty, smart and incredibly cunning. She was on top of the Gestapo’s most wanted list, saved the lives of thousands of allied soldiers and airmen, led a band of the French Resistance and participated in bringing down the Nazi regime. She was Australian through and through but, unfortunately, until her recent death at the age of 98, most people around our great nation had never heard of Nancy Wake. Nicknamed “The White Mouse” for her ability to evade being captured, Nancy, along with her husband Henri Fiocca, assisted in the escape of allied servicemen and Jewish refugees from

France into neutral Spain during WWII, soon becoming the most wanted resistance fighter in France. Raised in Sydney from 20 months old, Nancy left Australia in 1932 to work as a journalist for the Hearst group of newspapers. After witnessing the rise of Adolf Hitler and the violence towards Jews on the Paris streets and in Vienna, Nancy formed in her a determination to take down Hitler and the Nazi regime. During a visit to Vienna in 1933, she saw the horrible crimes of the Nazi regime up close. In 2003, while talking to News Limited’s thenLondon correspondent, Bruce Wilson, she describes the atrocities she witnessed and her

REAL LIFE personal experience of Hitler. “The Germans and Austrians had set up a kind of Catherine wheel and tied these Jews to it, and as it went around they were beating them and throwing things at them,” she says. Her determination to take down the regime was something to be admired. Despite the horrible dangers she faced, she risked her life to get the job done. Knowing there was a 5 million franc bounty on her head, she once pedalled over 200km to another radio operator after the group she was travelling with lost theirs. “The blokes didn’t think I’d ever get back. I only volunteered for it not because I’m brave but because I was the only one who could do it, being a woman,” she says. “In those days it was safer, or a woman had more chance than a man to get around because the Germans were taking men out just like that.” After being notified that the Gestapo was closing in on her, Nancy fled France for England in 1943 on the advice of her husband, who later died after being captured, tortured and executed by the Gestapo. Nancy, who blamed herself for Henri’s death, then went on to train and work in the French Section of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). In April 1944, she returned to France to help organise the Resistance before D-Day by arranging parachute drops of arms and equipment. She was then involved in combat with German troops sent to destroy the Maquis. It was said that she could kill with her bare hands and during a television interview in 1990, French fighter Henri Tardivat confirmed that this was in fact true. “She is the most feminine woman I know, until the fighting starts. Then, she is like five men,” he says.

“She is the most feminine woman I know, until the fighting starts. Then, she is like five men”

Nancy was awarded with France’s highest military honour, the Legion d’Honneur, as well as three Croix de Guerre and a French Resistance Medal. 60 years on, Nancy Wake was finally made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2004 - a recognition that was long overdue. After receiving her medal in Australia, Nancy remained humble and still questioned whether she was worth it. “I feel honoured by it. I hope I’m worth it,” she says. “I hope I will be able to live up to the oath that I have made to my country.” Nancy passed away peacefully last month in a London hospital at the age of 98 after her condition worsened following a heart attack in 2003 and then later, a chest infection. After Nancy’s death, Prime Minister Julia Gillard spoke of how the war veteran’s efforts during the WWII helped save thousands of innocent lives and how she should never be forgotten by our society. “Hundreds of allied personnel are alive because of her efforts and because of the work she did,” she says. “Nancy Wake will remain an abiding inspiration to generations of Australians.” But it’s not the medals that Nancy will be remembered for. What’s most memorable about this incredible lady is that she put her own life on the line to save thousands when so many others turned a blind eye. Nancy Wake was born an ordinary woman, but she created a life that made her far from ordinary - she was extraordinary. Words: Ashleigh Brock www.getitmagazine.com.au

P

ina Fiorenza unveiled a range of couture gowns at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival last month, inspired by Christian Dior’s revolutionary ‘New Look’ of the late 1940s. In designing the collection, the veteran Brisbane designer says she was enchanted by a pivotal moment in fashion history, when Dior’s extravagant designs caused a frenzied attack on models in Paris during the post war period. “Dior was showing one of his first, lavish collections in a Parisian market; war rations had deprived the world of beauty, and desire for luxury garments was so great, women became crazed by the incredible fabrics and shapes,” Pina says. “Overwhelmed by what they were seeing, they ripped the dresses off the models!” The incident was a major scandal of the time, and sparked a renewed interest in extravagant fashion, putting Paris back on the international fashion map. Dior’s designs marked a move away from war time austerity, towards a bright new period of voluptuous shapes and incredible fabrics, and a swift change in sentiment soon saw him celebrated by Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow for heralding a ‘New Look’ in fashion. Pina says her MBFF collection celebrates that iconic, frenetic moment in a Paris market, and takes inspiration from Dior’s “beautiful silhouettes, excessive design and lavish fabric”. “As an industry, we’ve seen a lot of costcutting and paring back in recent years, and I want this collection to remind us of the reasons why we do fashion,” Pina says. Having only just moved back into her studio, after it was destroyed by the January floods, Pina says the tumultuous start to the year gave her a renewed sense of excitement when designing the collection. “I wanted to have an incredible amount of fun with form, fabric and embellishments,” she says. “The theatrics of fashion at the catwalk level is incredibly euphoric; when my designs are on the catwalk, I want them to say ‘forget austerity, forget about what’s happened, it’s a new day, and we’re here to revel in an extravagant fantasy – even if it’s just for a brief moment’.” Known for her two decades in bridal design, Pina’s catwalk collection features avant garde bridal creations, as well as a series of bespoke eveningwear gowns from Fiorenza Evening, which was launched this year.

“It’s all about dramatic, voluptuous shapes in rich, thick silk embroidery, silk chiffon, masses of tulle, heavily beaded French lace and silk organza,” she says. “There’s also a tribute to Balenciaga, who famously spent three years perfecting a sleeve; I love that level of obsession,” she says. Check out a collection of the stunning collection of designs showcased at the MBFF.

"Tell the world what you are going to do, but first, show them.. Meaning that as long as we know what we want to do we can quietly go about it and that keeps us grounded. We always want to stick by our roots, even if this turns out to be a hugely successful label we will not forget the people that have given their time and energy to help us so much. We have big dreams and ideas..”

Before this year, The Stache Range was barely known within the local fashion scene. But times are fast changing and we predict this Gold Coast-based trio will soon be the most talked about team in the industry of vogue.

B

y day they don hard hats and tool belts, by night they put their minds together to create ultra-chic jeans and reap their fashion fortune. Luke Carter, Alex Carlsson and David Skeen are the driving force behind the latest style trend to come out of the Gold Coast – The Stache Range. A couple of carpenters and an electrician by trade; they’re an anomaly in an industry where fashion college or working as a design assistant is rite of passage. But they’re breaking the rules and following their hearts in hopes of fulfilling their dreams as major label designers. Officially formed in November 2010, the sense of free-spirited confidence and contradiction that defines their personal sense of style provided the inspiration for the initial denim collection. The new and innovative

line was publically launched last month after almost nine months in the making. As the boys reminisce over the past few months, Alex explains the concept initially grew while brainstorming in Dave’s bedroom with the boys wanting to provide clothing for themselves and their friends at an affordable price. “We struggled to comprehend the fact that we could work all week and one item of clothing could almost blow an entire weeks wage,” he says. With that, the boys put pen to paper and scribbled down the basics; look, label and price and set about making it happen. “Creating clothing for our friends and ourselves was originally the goal until we saw the potential in the label,” says Luke. “That gave us the launching pad that we needed because we knew that both our friends and ourselves would wear the product.

“The style as a group defiantly has elements from Gold Coast culture as well as combining a bit of Melbourne and European influence.”

You, yourself have to be your harshest critic.” Wise words from such young enthusiasts. At just 19 years old, these young guns certainly know where they’re heading. “We’ve always wanted to be highly involved in business,” says David. “This was a way to really enjoy the experience, be creative and hopefully learn a lot along the way.” “Age really is just a number,” agrees Luke. “We think that it is an advantage in that people see driven young guys that want to make a difference.” With a keen sense for the ever-expanding market, these teens have their eyes firmly set on achieving international success. “We want to make an impact!” Alex says. “The design process for next winters range has begun and we hope to release early February. We hope to secure a major chain

retailer within the next year as our range will be quite extensive and we feel that we have a lot to offer.” But the boys know this won’t be an easy feat. “Eventually the goal is to have The Stache Range store where you can buy everything that you need from us at an amazing price,” says David. “We are really hoping to go big with this label. We know how much work is involved and all of us are willing to do it.” Until then, they’re set on creating hype among the locals. “The Guerrilla Launch in the Queen Street Mall (Brisbane) was a little different and our marketing strategies will hopefully become very effective,” says Luke. “The idea of the launch was to find the busiest place, lay some carpet down, play some great music and let the models do their thing.”

"If you love The Stache Range, wear them!”

“[Although] we got into a little trouble and received a fine from the council. We now know that we need permits for our Guerrilla Lunches,” he quips. If you want to see the guys create more mayhem, head down to Love Nightlife, Broadbeach this September 9 for their Gold Coast Launch party. “We are giving away 100 pairs of jeans, we also have Bundy 5 on board as our drink sponsors, and for a bit of fun we have the Bundy 5 best bum competition,” says Alex. “All you have to do is wear a pair of Stache jeans and the crowd will judge you. The winner’s will receive $500 cash on the evening. Love has been great to us and the evening should be hugely successful and a lot of fun for everyone there.” Check out more of The Stache Range online or at House of Humility, Mermaid Beach.

A BOLD

SPRING

With every new season we are introduced to new makeup trends in both styles and colours. This Spring is all about bold colours! So forget about the predictable dark, smokey eye matched with a nude lip and instead experiment and have some fun. EYES - Create a stunning, look with highintensity pigments in yellow, pink, orange, green or purple. These colours have been seen on catwalks internationally and have made a huge impact. Think block colours - so don’t blend two or more colours together, just use the one hue to really make a statement. Wet your eye-shadow brush and apply the eye shadow damp to achieve that dramatic colour. Make sure if you do choose to use colour on your eyes to match it with an under-stated lip. If using colour on your eyes isn't your thing, simply select a bright shade of lipstick to use on your lips instead. LIPS – Go bold! Lips are to be bright and

vivacious. Red, orange, violet and hot pink are the favourites amongst the makeup industry professionals and they are sure to attract a lot of attention. There is no preference for matte or glossy this season, as long as it has intense colour. SKIN - Nude, dewy skin is perfect for Spring as it embodies the freshness of the season. Use a dewy foundation and lightly dust some translucent powder on your t-zone if you are prone to getting oily throughout the day. Bronze, mango and peachy hued blushes are the colours preferred for the apples of your cheeks. Ensure you highlight above your cheekbone with either a pearlescent or bronze base shimmer powder or illuminating cream.

HEALTH BEAUTY

What’s under your skin? This great and beautiful land of ours has long been known for its idyllic life of sun, surf and golden tanned skin but beneath the surface lurks a deadly disease that takes the life of thousands of people each year. Don’t be a victim; get the facts!

O

ur state has shimmered in yearlong summers that the locals have soaked up and the foreigners flocked to. Boasting some of the country’s most iconic beaches and unrivalled breaks, you’d be inclined to believe the lifestyle is faultless. Yet Queenslanders remain the most vulnerable population to skin cancer worldwide. In a state of such high risk, knowledge is the underlying core in the battle against this disease. Melanoma was once a word we assumed only plagued the elderly, but this disease threatens our youth and, at present, is the most common cancer in an age span of 1544 years old. According to Australian Cancer Council research, skin cancer accounts for a staggering 80 per cent of all newly diagnosed cancers and yet the condition is, remarkably, the most preventable type of its kind. Dr William Anseline, founder of Skin Alert Paradise Point, says that while most skin cancers are the result of over exposure to the sun, 80 per cent of the damage will have largely occurred before the age of 18, which is why prevention, diagnosis and skin treatment programs are becoming more and more important. Nevertheless, it’s within the technological era that our hope does lie. Sun damage is treatable regardless of age, deeming the present generations some of the luckiest to put right those skin wrongs. “We are ecstatic on the latest release of our new state-of-the-art skin analysis cameras. A unique design of digital camera specially designed to capture and reveal the deeper layers of the skin and potential sun damaged areas,” explains Dr Anseline. “As skin cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the top layer of the skin, this new technology will enable practitioners to evaluate a patient’s sun damage at astute speeds, but with more precision. This will allow for doctors or their skin health therapists to recommend September 2011

skin treatments and prevention solutions earlier in the process than was previously available.” “We hope that a lot of people, who often feel invulnerable to skin cancer and may not be sun smart or using a sunscreen, will take up this opportunity to find out how much damage they have already sustained. If damage is found it will allow them to be more proactive and seek out preventative skin repair products and procedures so as to minimise their future risk and repair the damage already sustained. It is definitely better to know early than too late,” he says. With the help of technological breakthroughs, a new battle has begun against the Australian skin cancer epidemic, where knowledge is the key and prevention is the cardinal weapon in our sun-soaked lives. Skin Alert Paradise Point is currently offering a FREE skin analysis, which only takes five minutes, using the latest skin analysis digital cameras.

“We are ecstatic about the latest release of our new state-of-the-art skin analysis cameras. A unique design of digital camera specially designed to capture and reveal the deeper layers of the skin and potential sun damaged areas.”

Words: Adele Rowlands-Dealey

For almost eight years his family has waited and wondered, but DNA testing of bones pulled from swampy bushland on the Sunshine Coast has now confirmed the final resting place of missing teenager Daniel Morcombe.

S

weet blue-eyed schoolboy Daniel Morcombe was just 13 when he disappeared from a bus stop on the Queensland Sunshine Coast on December 7, 2003. He was on his way to buy his family Christmas presents at a nearby shopping mall when a bus running behind schedule passed him. But when a second bus came minutes later, Daniel was gone. Now, almost eight years later, the Morcombe family are finally getting some answers. When the Morcombe family were told DNA testing confirmed police had found their son’s bones, it was like being hit with a sledgehammer. It was a sledgehammer seven September 2011

years and nine months in the making, after the momentous find in the investigation of Daniel’s disappearance. Flanked by his wife, Denise, and Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson, Daniel’s father Bruce Morcombe says the confirmation was both a relief and a shock. “It was very difficult,” he tells reporters outside the headquarters of the childprotection foundation established in Daniel’s name. “It is something like waiting for the sledgehammer to hit you, but when it does come it’s still a shock.” Three bones were found during a search of the Beerwah forest on the Sunshine Coast,

32

about 25km from where Daniel vanished in Woombye. Days earlier, two shoes were found, the same brand as Daniel was wearing when he disappeared. “It’s a monumental step in the family’s life, but also a monumental step in the investigation process,” Bruce says. “We are to some degree quite traumatised by Daniel’s loss and the findings, but at the same time we’re hoping it can be the first step in the healing process and we can recover.” Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says the confirmation of the bones marks the culmination of Queensland’s largest missing persons case. “This is an enormously significant result,” he tells reporters in Brisbane. “It’s a very sad answer, but it’s the answer.” Mr Atkinson read a statement from Daniel’s family, who say the news was extremely sad. “We knew in our heart that the search area was Daniel’s final resting place, the scientific confirmation is still enormously difficult to comprehend,” the statement says. “For seven years and nine months it is that expected shock we have all been waiting for.” Daniel was last seen about 2.10pm on Sunday, December 7, 2003, under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass on the Nambour Connection Road about 2km north of the Big Pineapple. “Bruce and I left around 8:30am Sunday morning to go to a work Christmas party and got home around 3:45pm. Brad (Daniel’s twin brother) was home by himself and we asked him where the other two boys were. He said Dean was at a friend’s place and Daniel had gone to the shops to get a haircut and buy some Christmas presents,” says Denise. “He tried to get us to go with him,” adds Brad. “I remember that Daniel begged me to go with him but I wanted to go the next day, on the Monday. I don’t really know why, I was just happy to be home that day.” Daniel had a shower, put on a bright red Billabong T-shit and a pair of shorts. “I was at the computer when he left,” says Brad. “I heard him say goodbye over my shoulder but I didn’t turn around.” Carrying $150 that he’d saved from picking fruit, Daniel walked out, off on his own. It was the last time Brad saw his brother, the last time anyone from Daniel’s family saw him. Denise says she was expecting Daniel to catch the last bus home, which left Maroochydore at 5pm. “I went down to the bus stop about 4:30pm to save him the walk home. When I drove down the road a bit, I saw a brokendown bus. Daniel wasn’t on it,” she says. By this time, Denise and her family were getting worried. “We thought he might have caught the wrong bus, or been hit by a car, or a snake might have bitten him and he’d be lying on the side of the road somewhere. The last thing on our minds was that he’d been abducted.” The family searched the areas nearby but despite their efforts, they found nothing and decided it was a matter best left to the police. “By the time we got to the police station it was just after 7pm. They told us to go home www.getitmagazine.com.au

TRUE CRIME

“It is something like waiting for the sledgehammer to hit you, but when it does come it’s still a shock.” and wait for him there and someone would contact us around 10pm that night,” Denise recalls. “I felt helpless,” she whispers, tears welling in her eyes. “That was the worst night of our lives.” Witnesses reported seeing a boy I a red shirt standing at the bus stop. Some also allegedly recall seeing a blue sedan and disheveled-looking man standing nearby. Daniel’s disappearance triggered a massive manhunt scouring the area for the missing boy, in one of most intensive investigations in Australian criminal history. And until recently that investigation had proven futile. However, a 42-year-old Perth man by the name of Brett Peter Cowan was charged with Daniel’s abduction and murder on August 13, sparking an scrupulous search of bushland at Beerwah - some 30km from Woombye involving up to 60 police and State Emergency Service volunteers. Brad says the discovery of Daniel’s remains put a shock wave through everyone. “The news brought everything back for me. I think

www.getitmagazine.com.au

about it all the time, but this brought it even closer again.” Brad replays the day his twin brother went missing over and over in his head. Doubts and questions about what he could have done differently constantly running through his mind like scenes from a movie. “I’ve thought about it a lot,” Brad says. “It could have easily been me walking out the door and not Daniel. I wonder what might have happened if I’d gone with him. Perhaps it might have been both of us that disappeared.” It’s a gnawing doubt that will most likely stay with him for the rest of his life. “He’ll always be my brother and I’ll always miss him,” Brad says. Despite the foul weather again calling off search efforts, Deputy Police Commissioner Ross Barnett says police and emergency services are keen to resume the search as soon as possible. “As long as it takes, we’re not going to walk away from that search until we have exhausted absolutely every area of search that we can do,” he says.

33

Mr Barnett says a white four-wheel drive Mitsubishi Pajero had been seized on Russell Island, at Moreton Bay south of Brisbane, as part of the investigation. At the inquest into Daniel Morcombe’s disappearance in April, a witness told of seeing a white Pajero with a vehicle snorkel near the bus stop where the Daniel was last seen. Brett Peter Cowan remains in custody on charges of murder, deprivation of liberty, child stealing, interfering with a corpse and indecent treatment of a child. He is expected to face court on September 26.

A

s the owner of Harvey World Travel Hope Island, I get to travel a lot. Why not? I like to call it research and believe me, all our customers like us to have been everywhere, stayed everywhere, and seen everything! In an effort to satisfy my loyal and new clientele, my trusty team of experienced consultants and I are striving to do exactly that. We know you can book travel on the internet easily

these days so why would you come see us? Because one of us has more than likely been to where ever it is your heart or business wants to take you and that experience, first hand knowledge and genuine interest in you and yours is something you just can’t get from a computer screen. In up coming issues I will be telling you about some of my wonderful travel experiences. There is nothing quite like speaking to an agent who is passionate about a destination, especially if they have actually been there and really know what they are talking about. One of the best New Year’s of my life was spent at a Club Med Resort in Switzerland at the Jungfrau. Skiing holidays can be expensive, especially over Christmas and New Year’s and even more so in Europe. Club Med is the answer. More upslale, and more exclusive and inclusive than ever before, all meals(no more dirty old pies up on the slopes for

EUR5+), all beverages (gluwein on tap!), ski lift passes with VIP treatment on the slopes with very experiencd ski instructors (hello Sven!), nightly entertainment and dining options galore, are all included in the one price. This includes a huge New Year’s Eve party – that saves you hundreds of Euros right there. Or, why not take advantage of the great new resort that is opening this October, Val Morel in France? It is a new level of luxury for Club Med from premium apartment style to luxury chalets. And you can enjoy personal butler and chef service in your very own suites! Be the first of your friends to take advantage of the fantastic opening specials. Don’t miss out. Call me now!

Cheers, Cathy.

LAST WORD with Rachel Bird

ADELE London Life

With a creative force behind her that matches her strong emotive voice, it’s hard to imagine Adele Laurie Blue Adkins having an unassuming start in life. The singer-songwriter was raised by a single young mum, a furniture maker who packed up and shipped them off to West Norwood in South London when Adele was only 11 years old. A move that prompted her to pen an ode to her roots with ‘Hometown Glory’, a song that made it onto her debut album 19. In March 2008 Adele signed a deal with Columbia Records and XL Recordings embarking on a US tour to promote her first album. It should have been the chance of a lifetime but in the grips of a troubled relationship, she cancelled her tour dates to go back to her previous boyfriend. Almost destroying her newfound career, Adele admits the relationship was glued together by heavy drinking. “I couldn’t bear to be without him,” she says. “I was like, ‘Well, OK, I’ll just cancel my stuff then.’ I can’t believe I did that ... It seems so ungrateful.” With her debut American tour down the drain, all seemed lost. But instead of dwelling on the negative, Adele redirected her energies by giving up the alcohol and moving out of her mother’s home. It was all inspiration; another song in the making and, luckily, she was granted one more chance. Scoring a gig on US hit show Saturday Night Live was a huge feat in itself but, as fate would have it, US Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin appeared on the program and won the NBC network

Bursting onto the music scene is none other than soulful singer Adele. its best ratings in over a decade. With over 17 million viewers tuning in, Adele blew everyone away. The following day her debut album had topped the iTunes charts, reached No. 11 on the Billboard 200 Chart and was certified Gold by February 2009.

Lucrative Labels

Move over Madonna, Adele’s coming through with a voice that demands attention!

In the UK, Adele held the charts with such a stronghold even Madonna’s material girl album couldn’t withstand it. ‘Rolling in the Deep’ reached No. 1 in 11 countries and is considered a crossover hit. All this success yet Adele refuses to be tainted by a label. She’s in the industry for the music and admits there wasn’t one lucrative deal she was willing to sell out for. Adele says she came from humble beginnings so her drive has nothing to do with money. “But if I was moneydriven, I’d be very excited about the money coming in. I’d be the face of full-fat Coke. Get another million in the bank,” she laughs. With a modest personality, heart-felt lyrics and a smashing voice, is there anything this girl doesn’t have?

Looks and Love

You only have to hear one of her songs to know no one does the post-relationship blues like Adele. Pulling on heartstrings you never even knew you had, Adele’s previous lovers serve as a muse of inspiration for both her albums. Performing ‘Someone like you’ at the Brit Awards, Adele welled up with tears and

revealed she had a vision of her ex floating through her mind. “[The vision] was of him watching me at home and he’s going to be laughing at me because he knows I’m crying because of him.” Adele received a standing ovation.

“I don’t make music for eyes. I make music for ears.” Another thing Adele deserves applause for is her vow to not bow down to the industries pressure to lose weight. Revealing she has no problem with other singers who choose to flaunt their bodies, Adele says: “I love seeing Lady Gaga’s boobs and bum. I love seeing Katy Perry’s boobs and bum. Love it! But that’s not what my music is about. I don’t make music for eyes. I make music for ears.” Adele also spoke about how she’s come to terms with her figure, and has no intention of slimming down by dieting or hitting the gym. “I don’t like going to the gym. I like eating fine foods and drinking nice wine. Even if I had a really good figure, I don’t think I’d get my t**s and a** out for no one.” And that is exactly why the world loves you Adele. Stay true to you and let the rest of us enjoy the tunes.
