EDITOR

In a word I

spy with my little eye something beginning with ‘J’. That’s right. America’s R‘n’B chart-topper Jason Derulo came to town and we got to hang out with him! The singer/songwriter was spotted at a few local nightclubs letting off a bit of steam, and let me tell you, Miss Lara Bingle was nowhere to be seen. Nevertheless, it didn’t stop this super stud getting down on the dance floor with locals. Get all the Derulo goss on page 18, and then scoot on down to our paparazzi pages for the photo evidence. But that’s not all the celebrity hype we managed to rustle up this issue, you may have noticed the divine DJ-turned-solo artist Havana Brown on the cover. Our intuitive radars are telling us she’s keeping a BIG secret from the public. Find out what it is in her exclusive interview on page 20. This may be a star-studded issue, but we haven’t forgotten about our celebs-to-be. From artists, authors and musicians, to motorcar sports enthusiasts, fashion designers and even those behind the camera lens, we’re celebrating local talents in all their glory on their rise to stardom. And on page 22, we’ve got the young guns who’ve used their 15 minutes of YouTube fame to make it big for themselves – we’re talking Charice Pempengco, Keenan Cahill and even Justin Bieber! I hope you all enjoy this month’s glittery edition of Get it magazine. Until next time… Adios amigos!

Pyjamas in Paradise! The hottest new musical to hit the stage.

I

n the late 1950s and early 1960s, long before Schoolies appeared on the scene, even before meter maids patrolled the streets, something else was stirring on the Surfers Paradise beachfront…pyjama parties! Organised by local hotels, these huge social gatherings drew thousands of teens from all around Australia to the small resort town on the Gold Coast and their popularity put Surfers Paradise on the map! Now, The Arts Centre Gold Coast is inviting you to follow the story of Bruce Large – retired (kind of), fast-talking (always), larger than life (definitely) and his controversial dream to turn Surfers into paradise! Set in a time where bikinis were Itsy Bitsy, love had people All Shook Up and everyone was desperate for a Summer Holiday, Pyjamas in Paradise is a hilarious look at what

life may have been like…if life was a musical and Meter Maids were back up singers for the Supremes! From the co-writer of Dusty – The Original Pop Diva and Shout!, John-Michael Howson and Peter Pinne, The Arts Centre Gold Coast in association with BBC Digital, Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast and Stewart Silver King and Burns is proud to present the world premiere of Pyjamas in Paradise! DID YOU KNOW At a recent sold out media club luncheon, Premier Anna Bligh let guests in on a few home secrets. Did you know the Queensland Premier worked in one of the busiest restaurants that most of us Gold Coaster’s have visited more than once? That’s right, good ol’ Mickey D’s (that’s McDonald’s for all those lagging on the teenage slang front) on Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise. Who would have thought?

I

t’s a typical Friday night at Love Nightlife in Broadbeach, but for MAM Productions, this is business. Filming beautiful female contenders strutting the catwalk in sexy lingerie for the Miss Young Hot & About to Become Famous competition may seem like an easy job to some, but there is much more that goes on behind the scenes with this Gold Coast production company than meets the eye. From filming to lighting, editing to sound, transforming hours of shooting into the final two-minute production is a demanding job. But as these young guns tell us, there’s nothing in the world they’d rather do. The driving force behind MAM Productions is a trio of friends, now business partners: Michael Papal, Adis Colic and Matt Shefford. Individually bringing something unique to the table, all three are a multidisciplinary power behind the company’s continuing success. Michael, quite ironically, is the front man from behind the camera. His charismatic persona serves as the voice for the trio as he finds himself at ease sourcing and maintaining client relationships. Adis, on the other hand, is the visionary of the group. Able to conceptualise into reality the cutting edge creativity, a motif shown throughout their work, he leads the editing department and feels most content designing graphics and logos. “Adis is the one who receives our texts when inspiration strikes in August 2011

the dead of night,” Matt laughs. “It’s any time really. I could be walking down the street or going past a shop front and see a really cool angle to shoot, so I have to tell the guys before I forget.” Matt’s finesse is best suited to the Producer role. With a keen eye for detail, the productions stay tight. Completing a year of IT at university, before moving across to a Bachelor of Multimedia, was once deemed a roundabout journey, but as the wise old adage goes, nothing is ever lost in the pursuit of knowledge. As well as having his hand in the filming and editing processes, Matt is the man responsible for the MAM Productions website. And boy, what a website! With one quick squiz at their flashy homepage, you’ll get a taste of the MAM flavour and it willl leave you craving more. Showcasing their recent work with the NRL All Stars, Titans, Quicksilver Pro, Billabong, Breaka Burleigh Pro, their latest instalments to the Love Nightlife file are about to get hotter. Their new look website flaunts large scale projects including university campaigns, TV commercials, wedding videos and some saucy material with adult company Slap N Tickle. But it hasn’t always been bars and babes for these lads, business has its grass roots quite literally with them digging trenches on set. Right from the start, these boys put in the hard yards.

12

One man who’s been championing them from the sidelines since day dot is their former university mentor, Bevan Beache. “These guys always stood out from the crowd,” he says. “While others had stars in their eyes, these boys were really dedicated to their craft. They grabbed the bull by the horns and, trust me, I wasn’t the only one who noticed.” While working on the Quicksilver Pro, which was broadcast globally across six nations, word of mouth soon spread of the dedication they were showing. “These guys were in there doing the grunt work, getting their hands dirty,” Bevan says. “They were there at 5am every single morning ready to go. They’re as thick as thieves!” With a real taste for the industry, it wasn’t long before MAM Productions was registered and the company was in full swing. “It was a tough industry to break into, but our passion and drive for success has pushed us further than we ever thought possible,” Adis says. “It’s been hard work, and we suspect it’s going to get even harder. But looking back at where we’ve come from and what we’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time, there’s nothing else we’d rather be doing.” Once three young enthusiasts with a thriving passion and a willingness to put in the hard yards, they’re now savvy businessmen with the whole world ahead of them. “Who knows where we’ll be in five or 10 years,” Michael says. “The sky’s the limit!” www.getitmagazine.com.au

LOCAL TALENT

SMOOTH

OPERATOR Bursting onto the local music scene this month is none other than R‘n’B/hip-hop sensation James “Nowell” O’dwyer.

K

nown to his friends and devoted fans as Nowell, the singer, rapper and songwriter is selling out Gold Coast venues and it’s easy to see why. One listen to the 23-year-old’s smooth tunes and you’re tempted to draw comparisons to the major game players in the R‘n’B world – think Kanye West, Jay Z, Lil Wayne, Ludacris and Ne-Yo. But listen a little longer and those comparisons begin to fade away as it becomes clear that while Nowell certainly channels the creativity of those who have come before him, he definitely has a style, a flavor and a place in music that are all his own. Born in Manly, Sydney, Nowell’s background incorporates Samoan, Tongan, Irish, Scottish and Maori – a winning combination for his handsome looks and schoolboy charm. As a youngster, he travelled around a lot with his family, cheering on his father, who played professional rugby league. After following in his father’s footsteps for years, Nowell fell into music in his final year of high school, performing cover songs with his classmates and improvising rap lyrics wherever he felt the urge. Discovering he had more to offer than just schoolyard sing-alongs, he progressed to writing his own songs, and now he even DJs major sets. “I think at the moment I’m putting all my effort into music because I should be,” he says. “I’m addicted to music. If I go out, I just stand there and listen to the music all night. The beat, the rhythm, the lyrics; I can’t get enough.” And Nowell’s ability to write songs within minutes is remarkable. “I’ve already got about seven albums worth of songs,” he says. “I can do a whole song in about 15 minutes which is why I’ve got so many.” While on a trip to Canberra recently, the rapping wunderkind had industry ears twitching. After meetings upon meetings with top producers, including Chris Corby from the successful dance group Deepface, and ‘90s

August 2011

chart-topper Tony Lee Scott, Nowell moved back to the Coast to work on his debut single, ‘Mystery Girl’, with high hopes to join forces with some R‘n’B superstars. Although sources tell us Nowell is on the verge of signing a major record deal, the shy, down-to-earth singer denies the allocations. “Hmm we’ll see about that. Maybe one day,” he says. However modest about his rise to fame, Nowell admits most of the hard work is still ahead of him. “You have to work for it. I wouldn’t be here without the dedication I

“I’m addicted to music... The beat, the rhythm, the lyrics; I can’t get enough.” put into everything I do,” he says. “When I bring a song out, I’ll have to keep working to bring another one out. It’s not a quick process, this is long term.” So what is next for Nowell? He’s currently working on a fundraiser for a friend’s mother who is battling breast cancer, and will continue writing songs while working on his live performances. “If you can’t do live shows, what’s the point in releasing a song?” he says. And when it all falls into place and Nowell lands the record deal of his dreams, will he be ready for the fame that comes with the job? “Most of it, but it’s not all what you see on TV. I know people in the industry so I know what’s ahead of me. I’ve got family and friends and a great team behind me that will help me through anything that comes my way.” With his incredible voice and a debut CD laced with clever lyrics, hypnotic tracks and impeccable vocals, Nowell is certainly someone the world will soon know and love.

DERULO CELEB NEWS

Down Under

Chart-topping dynamo Jason Derulo had no hope of ridin’ solo when he hit the Gold Coast’s Glitter Strip late last month.

T

he R‘n’B singer was among a handful of international music sensations who hit the Coast to perform at the Southern Cross Media and Austereo national conference. The boys from Good Charlotte, Benji and Joel Madden, were also spotted out and about mixing business with pleasure, along with former Savage Garden singer-turnedsolo artist Darren Hayes, Pete Murray, Eskimo Joe and The Vines. The stars all stayed at Jupiters Hotel and Casino and did the rounds of the local radio stations during their short stay. Sea FM funny-man Simon Baggs got the exclusive interview with Jason. “It was great fun catching up with Jason Derulo. He spent about four hours at Sea FM with the team and seemed liked he enjoyed every moment,”

says the Breakfast Show host. “He’s probably one of the friendliest guests we have had on our show. He said he loved the Gold Coast and can’t wait to come back again.” Jason seemed to cause the biggest hype around town and didn’t shy away from mixing with the locals. On Thursday his entourage headed to East in Broadbeach and then on Friday to Love Nightlife, after performing at the conference at

Movie World. “It was supposed to be a big secret, but you know word of mouth,” says Love Nightlife Marketing Manager Tony Rigas. “He was a really nice guy – kinda quiet, laidback but I think he was having a good time dancing and meeting the girls.” “He was definitely in fine form partying with his people until 2am,” Simon adds. “He might have been scouting the local talent,” Tony quips. “I’d welcome him back to Love at the drop of a hat.” Since Jason was unleashed onto the music scene back in 2009, he’s ruled the airwaves with his smooth lyrics and catchy tunes. His debut single ‘Whatcha Say’ going double-platinum, shortly trailed by the ARIA number one smash hit ‘In My Head’, not to mention the wealth of charttoppers that have followed, have secured his spot as one of the most notable R‘n’B stars of the decade. Adele Rowlands-Dealey gets up close and personal with the gorgeous DJcome-singer Havana Brown in her most exclusive interview to date!

H

avana Brown always planned on being a singer, it’s just that becoming a world-renowned DJ kind of got in the way. As a child, the Melbourne-born beauty was told to follow her dreams, and strive for success in the things she loved. And my, oh my she loved to sing! Admittedly though, her performances back then were a little different. “At age 5 and 6, I’d put together shows at family dinners and drag along my poor cousins, who didn’t know how to dance or sing. I don’t know how entertained everyone was,” Havana recalls with a laugh. After countless years of singing lessons, performing in dance troupes and cheerleading for her hometown Aussie Rules and basketball teams, Havana got serious about making her own music right after leaving high school. She started working with Panos Liassi, a Melbourne-based London DJ/producer and one half of R‘n’B/reggae partystarters, Supafly Inc. Musical sparks flew and Havana found herself following him to the UK to form the Fugees-style group, Fishbowl, with two other members. “It was a bit of regae, dance, hip-hop, R‘n’B all mixed in together. And yes, our band was really called Fishbowl,” Havana quips. “There was an analogy behind it but I can’t really remember it; all I hear now is a really horrible name.” Fishbowl got signed to the Polydor UK label almost instantly, but sadly, in-fighting saw the act split before they even got to release their first single. “When I look back, it was a pretty dark time,” says Havana. “Getting signed is a big deal for a new artist. It was all very exciting. You think, woah, this is it! But it wasn’t…” When the band broke up, she took solace in the city’s roaring club scene until one night, she had a dancefloor epiphany of her own: the DJ had the best job in the room and she wanted in. After learning the basics from Panos, she scraped together enough money from her four-quid-an-hour job to buy her first pair of decks and started hitting up bars with her demo. Her persistence finally paid off when she scored her first residency at London’s exclusive cabaret nightclub. “I told the promoters I’d play my first gig for free and they could throw me off after the first song. I don’t think they even thought I’d turn up the next night. When I did, they were like ‘oh, you were serious?’ I ended up playing for an hour!” Arriving back in Australia at the end of 2006, Havana was determined to pursue a career behind the decks and “worked her little tush off” to keep her dream alive. After working the club circuit, she became the first female DJ in Australia to sign a major label record deal with Universal Music in 2008, released her first mix CD, Crave, and topped the year off opening for the Pussycat Dolls on their promo tour. “That was a really exciting time for me. I’d never really supported a big act like that before,” she says. “I had dancers and I put on a little bit of a show. But that was just me experimenting; performing and mixing it in with the DJing.” The Dolls’ management were so impressed with Havana’s show that they asked her back for their full tour in 2009. “It was a very big stepping stone for me [and] what followed on from then sort of flowed on to other opportunities,” she says. As word spread, Havana found herself supporting the cream of the pop crop, including Rihanna, Chris Brown, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, with the latter inviting her on her European tour a year later. “I remember the management coming up to me and saying, ‘so what are you doing around September time because Britney needs a support act’. I’m like, ‘Britney? Britney Spears?! Er, no matter what I’m doing I’ll be clearing it,” she laughs. “Britney said yes. I couldn’t believe it! I’ll never forget that first

cover story same time,” she says. “I thought it might be an issue where people might go: ‘what? Why is she singing now?’ But everyone seems to have accepted the change quite well. I’m not switching, I’d never give up my DJing, I think it’s just a natural progression where singing and DJing will fit in nicely together.” At the same time, she realises that some people can be just as dismissive of female pop singers as they are of female DJs. But she says that only motivates her more. “It actually drives me more when people say bad things,” she confesses. “It doesn’t make me angry, it’s more ‘I’m just going to annoy you even more by going out there even harder.’ I know I’m putting myself out there in a different way. Originally I was behind the console playing other people’s music but now I’m up

show I did with Britney in Paris where there was like 25,000 people out there. It was mind-blowing and so nerve-racking but the best experience.” Since then, Havana has only expanded her horizons with weekly radio mixup shows in Australia and abroad. She’s also sold over 150,000 copies of her Crave series and played events as dazzling and diverse as the official Grammy’s After Party and the Singapore F1 Grand Prix alongside Beyonce and the Black Eyed Peas. “Now that was unbelievable. The crowd was insane. It was so hot in Singapore at that time and the lights on that stage made it 20 degrees hotter than it already was! I was dripping sweat but it was like I was just so sweated out that I didn’t care anymore. It was so much fun,” she says. Confessing she’s having an absolute ball right now touring with Enrique and Pitbull, Havana says she’s never been on a tour www.getitmagazine.com.au

quite so energetic. “Backstage after the show there is loud Latino music playing and Pitbull, the crew, all of back-up singers and the musician, they’re all doing that really sexy dancing. They’ve all got a bottle of tequila in their hands, they’re sharing it around and just having fun. It is crazy backstage!” “Enrique is one of the most down-to-earth superstars I have ever met. He is so cool it’s not funny,” she smiles. “It’s surprising because he’s a good-looking guy, but does not buy into any of the superstar hype, nothing! He’s got an Aussie mentality. He jokes a lot and fools around; he’s so much fun.” Havana’s career as a jet-setting DJ has been nothing short of dazzling, but now she’s ready to shine in a whole new light. Twenty years since that first giddy singing lesson, she’s finally taking back the mic and launching her long-overdue singing career. “It’s exciting, nerve-wracking and intimidating all at the

Written and produced by dance duo More Mega, the track is the perfect introduction to Havana’s vocal talents. A certified dancefloor detonator, the song’s as epic as it is euphoric with an insanely infectious breakdown that’s guaranteed to throw the crowd into overdrive. “It’s created for both clubs and radio. That was really important for me [but] very difficult to pull off. As for the track, it’s about how music makes me feel, with a few hidden innuendos too.” Inside sources reveal Havana is on the brink of announcing her second single, with the release date set for next month, but Havana remained tight-lipped. She did, however, tells us to expect an upbeat party song just in time for the warmer season ahead. “It evokes happiness, and I love that about it. It’s perfect for summer,” she says. We’ll keep our eyes and hears peeled Havana. August 2011

TALENT PROFILE

J

ustin Bieber is a household name today, which is quite poetic since his career kicked off from the comfort of his home in front of a computer and all thanks to YouTube. The YouTube phenomenon has taken many a mere mortal to other worldly success and hurtled them into a new cosmos of stardom. Social media sites have made it possible for more and more people to dish themselves up for public consumption and forge a career from it, let’s take a look at some of these selfmade superstar sensations. Justin Bieber Raised by a single mother in a low-income home, Justin taught himself to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. It was never any question whether this boy had musical talent, only of when it would be discovered. Justin’s life changing moment came when his mum put a video up on YouTube to share his winning second place in a singing competition. This was the moment that is to be thanked for his now, astonishing career. Justin kept uploading his music and his popularity grew. After posting dozens of homemade videos on YouTube in 2007, covering songs from artists like Usher, NeYo and Stevie Wonder, Justin racked up over 10,000,000 views on his own. With that popularity and talent on YouTube he caught the eyes of recording studios everywhere. With massive artists like Usher and Justin Timberlake waging bidding wars to sign him, it was no wonder his debut single of 2009 did well on the Billboards Charts. To give you an idea of the scope of his success, Justin was the first artist to chart seven songs from a debut album on Billboard hot 100. Only last year, Justin went on his first official headlining tour, the My World Tour. In June this year, Justin was ranked number 2 on the Forbes list of Best-Paid Celebrities under 30. Currently Justin Beiber is the youngest star and one of seven musicians on the list raking in with $53 million earned in a 12 month period. His accolades could almost surpass his biological age and that is all thanks to posting a video! Charice Pempengco At 13 million hits and counting, Charice’s audience is growing at a staggering pace thanks to YouTube. In 2007, a web-savvy fan began posting a series of Charice’s performances on YouTube including appearances on the Filipino, her home countries talent show Little Big Star and the popular South Korean talent show Star King. She caught the eyes of the likes of Ellen DeGeneres and has also made appearances on the TV series Glee!. Charice received standing ovations for several performances on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah says: “You are a force to be

reckoned with. That voice comes from something bigger than yourself.” S what’s next stop for Charice? “I want to sing AND dance with Justin Timberlake,” and her 13 million fans certainly look forward to seeing that. Fully sick rapper (Christiaan Van Buuren) On Dec 11, 2009 Christiaan Van Buuren was diagnosed with Tuberculosis, and placed in isolation at a Sydney hospital. But rather than slip into a self-pitying mode, he uses YouTube as a way to release his fear and stave off his boredom with a comical take on his situation. His song ‘I’m not sick, but I’m sick sick’ was the first video posted on YouTube and The Fully Sick Rapper is born. The journey didn’t end there after being released from hospital he returns for a second time and is diagnosed with Multi Drug Resistant TB, spending 187 days in isolation with a real fear he could not be cured. Having the determination never to give up he created the world’s first fictional web series around a real life, his series was written, created, filmed, in and around the hospital room whilst The Fully Sick Rapper was confined. He may have gone in alone, but he walks out of hospital with 20,000 new friends that joined his rap gang on Facebook, and 4000 tweeting rap legends that follow him on Twitter. Search Fully Sick and The Side Effect on YouTube to see the talent born of adversity. During her California Dream tour, Katy Perry met Keenan and they performed ‘Teenage Dream’ together in a video. Most recently this year, Keenan was joined backstage of Glee! Live by cast members Dianna Agron, Harry Shum, Jr., Darren Criss and Jenna Ushkowitz to lip-sync to Katy Perry’s song ‘Last Friday Night.’ International superstardom all thanks to the webcam in his childhood bedroom. Words: Rachel Bird

Keenan Cahill Lil john, Katy Perry and David Guetta flash across the official site of Keenan Cahill along with his latest nomination for the 2011 Teen Choice Awards! for Choice Web Star. Keenan’s celebrity status is a clear indication of ‘teen choice’ by posting a series of entertaining self produced videos on YouTube, lip-syncing to the hottest top 40 hits and saw his popularity skyrocket overnight. But it was his cover of Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ that really made it into the spotlight, earning millions of views on YouTube and a following of fans for its lovably goofy take on Katy’s ode to teenage lust. When the video found its way to Katy Perry herself, it went from 600,000 views to 3-million in the span of a single week. The video has over 36 million views to date. And why is his fame so astonishing? For one thing, he has overcome incredible adversity, suffering from a rare genetic disorder called Mucopoly-Saccaridosis (MPS-6) since birth. For another, all this acclaim at the young age of 15! In June 2011, he appeared with LMFAO performing their song ‘Party Rock Anthem’.

FASHION NEWS

F

ollowing the success of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane, South Bank will once again host Queensland’s most prestigious fashion event and the superb designer line-up this August. The recent floods may have dampened our soils, but now there is optimism in the air as Queensland’s most popular and exciting Fashion Festival gets set to strut the runway at South Bank. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival has answered the call to again deliver a worldclass event celebrating the very best fashion glamour, creativity and accessibility on offer and to once again showcase Queensland’s spectacular and diverse fashion market. “While the flood waters may have receded, the effects of these devastating natural disasters will continue to be felt by the local fashion design and retail industry for many months to come. We are committed to working to drive interest and sales for this great city,” says Festival Director, Lindsay Bennett. South Bank Corporation CEO, Malcolm Snow is once again proud to welcome the fashion festival back to the Parklands, South Bank; located at the epicentre of Brisbane's arts and cultural precinct. “South Bank Corporation is delighted to welcome the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival back to our precinct for the second year. Hosting this event ‘post-flood’ is an undeniable statement that Brisbane is back in business. The MBFF hosted by South Bank is a potent symbol to locals as well as interstate and internationally that our resilient local economy, local businesses, retailers and popular places like South Bank are thriving again.” In 2010, the Festival generated reported retail sales in excess of $4.35 million and this year it’s hoped to again achieve similar results. Showcasing an ecclectic mix of the best Spring/Summer fashion collections by more than 60 top local, national and international designers including Easton Pearson, Akira, Paul Hunt and Scanlan & Theodore, the Festival will feature broad-appeal fashion merchandise through to independent readyto-wear designer labels available in-store and ready for customers to buy. This year guests can expect to see nine Group Shows comprising of a superb opening event, an off-site swimwear/resort show, a series of fashionable high teas, an Australian Fashion Graduate of the Year competition, a ‘fashion after hours’ discussion program and a closing gala event – providing the public with a broad selection of accessible fashion events to choose from and attend. Festival organisers applaud all sponsors whose continued commitment bucks the economic trends and the latest disasters throughout Queensland and demonstrates a belief in the vibrancy and strength of the Queensland fashion design and retail industry. www.getitmagazine.com.au

“Their support and interest in this Festival, along with the others that will be secured over the coming weeks, enables us to stage an event which costs in excess of $850,000 to produce,” says Lindsay. The Festival also welcomes back celebrity makeup artist Napoleon Perdis, who’s creative team will be heading up all makeup for the event, and Schwarzkopf Professional for all hair during the event. Continuing the tradition of giving back to the community, the MBFF is also promising to donate $1 from every ticket sold to the AEIOU Foundation – for children with autism. The AEIOU Foundation is a not for

profit organisation dedicated to providing a professional, full-time early intervention program of the highest quality for children aged 2 ½ to 6 who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). While the Festival activities herald a schedule of runway collection shows, guests can also expect to explore Brisbane’s top fashion talent while partying with the VIP guests and rubbing shoulders with celebrities and leading fashion editors in our front rows. So mark Saturday, August 20 through until Friday, August 26, 2011 in your calendar now and prepare yourself for a fashion frenzy!

Black Angus Each month Get it’s gourmet food connoisseur sets off in search of the best eateries around town. Find out what culinary creations she managed to sink her teeth into this August.

T

here are hundreds of foodie-type write-ups floating through the pages of magazines in our great land of Oz, but a good whack of them seem solely focused on the culinary locales of Melbourne and Sydney. And when Get it set off in pursuit of fresh and fabulous eats around our local neighbourhood, we were shocked to find a simple check online and a flip through a few sites turns up nothing, or at least not much at all. So this here is a record of our foodie related explorations through our hometown – roughly stretching from Byron Bay to Ascot and little pockets of food heaven in between. This month’s explorations led us to fivestar dining entwined in a modern, yet warm, almost home-like atmosphere at Black Angus Bar & Grill Restaurant. Casual by day, chic by night Black Angus has been created through an understanding of the great taste, appreciation of the local market. Newly opened at Sanctuary Cove, proud owner Nick Hagop and his family have turned the much-loved Bahia Restaurant into a sleek and sophisticated dining oasis at Sanctuary Cove. Playing host to a team of friendly staff with exceptional service standards, Black Angus delivers highly experienced chefs producing a menu that is to die for! Using only the best quality produce, meats and fresh local seafood, the chefs have crafted an exquisite bill of fare fit for even the fussiest meal connoisseur, with both modern Australian and international cuisine. With beautiful waterfront views out on the deck, you can choose to dine alfresco or in the comfort of our indoor dining. One look August 2011

at the new and improved menu and you’ll be hooked. The extensive wine list boasts a wide range of popular labels, and a unique range of Australian boutique wine, to go with a selection of dessert wines, liqueurs, beers, spirits and delicious cocktails. With all the old favourites back on board, the latest menu excites us with a few fresh delights too. Black Angus allows its diners to feast on entrees such as Braised Bangalow Pork Belly with roasted cashews, green apple, coriander and caramel jerez vinegar, or a delicate dish of Harvey Bay Scallops with skordalia, tempura cauliflower, caper and raisin vinaigrette and blood orange oil. The mains summit a little more traditional territory with selections including Oven Roasted Jindalee Lamb Rack served with with sweet potato and pinenut ecrase, confit golden shallots, spinach, watercress and lamb jus or Corn Fed Chicken Breast with carrot puree, creamed leeks, white truffle gnocchi and borderlaise sauce. They have an extensive selection of Black Angus grain fed beef. Grain fed then aged the Black Angus range has an average marble of two and your choice of cut – Eye Fillet, Rib Eye, Sirloin, Rump and Rib on the Bone and also Wagyu. All steaks are served with mash potato or shoestring fries and buttered green beans, or garden salad with the choice of mushroom and seeded mustard, pepper and brandy, beef jus and béarnaise sauce. Or why not try the Hot Rock/Stone Grill – a volcanic rock heated in a special made oven for the sole use of cooking. For the ultimate in beef brilliance, it’s guaranteed for exceptional eating quality, tenderness and flavor. Then comes the dessert. If you’re planning on being ‘good’ this month, I suggest you turn away now! With lip-smacking dishes like the Citrus Tart served with king island double cream, berry compote, lemoncello and Persian fairy floss, and my personal favourite, the Triple Chocolate Brownie served with chocolate and cointreau parfait and hot chocolate sauce, the Black Angus desert menu is simply too tasty to resist. So for a blissful dining experience that comes from the heart, you simply can’t go past Black Angus Bar & Grill Restaurant.

40

Open seven days, with a lunch menu just as fine as the dinner options, soak in the relaxed atmosphere while Black Angus allows for a long and lazy midday munch, or a sleek and sophisticated affair, whether out on the deck with a cool cocktail in summer, or cozy and warm in the dining room with a mouthwatering meal in the cooler temps of winter. Whatever your mood, Black Angus will ensure the ultimate dining experience especially for you – with service you won’t forget! Andrew Pascoe of Sofitel Gold Coast’s signature restaurant, Room81, has recently won the National Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition in Melbourne. Competing against six of Australia’s best up and coming Chefs, Andrew has not only taken out the top spot, he will also travel to Turkey next month for the grand finals and coveted international title. The International Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition is an annual event run by the ancient French gastronomic association, Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. The competition encourages and supports the training of young chefs worldwide and allows them to demonstrate their culinary skills in an international arena. Having won the state finals on the Gold Coast in June, Andrew journeyed to Melbourne last month for the illustrious National Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition. Each Chef was given a mystery box of seasonal ingredients and asked to prepare a threecourse meal for four people, all within three hours. “Opening the mystery box was probably the most nerve-wracking part,” says Andrew. “Once I saw there was some seafood, lamb and a few fruit and vegetables, then it was a relief and time to get down to business.” After three hours of gruelling competition it was time to ‘plateup’. Andrew’s award-winning menu featured an entrée of seafood tortellini, Sous-vide lamb rack for the main, and a scrumptious apple and vanilla soufflé for dessert.

Save on Power Bills. What you need to know. Q. “I heard that the rebates for Solar Power have finished – is this right?” A. “The rebates remain as attractive as ever for the long term. An investment in Solar Power should be seen as a 20+ year investment. The home or business owner is still paid the same for the energy which they create. The upfront, out of pocket expense has had a very small increase, however that is the advantage of using a pay-off facility or finance option with your solar supplier.” Q: What is solar power? A: Solar power the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Solar energy is the cleanest, greenest and most viable form of renewable energy available to help power your home. Q: How does solar equipment work? A: Solar panels turn sunlight into electricity. The cells absorb the light and produce electric voltage - solar cells do not store any electricity so all power produced is fed through an inverter which allows home appliances to be powered. Any surplus energy is fed into the main power grid.

Q: Do solar panels still produce power on cloudy days? A: Yes. Just as any beach go-er knows, you can still get sun burnt on a cloudy day. Similarly, solar panels will still collect energy from the sun but on a reduced basis. Q: If my system doesn’t produce enough electricity for my household needs, do I run out of power? A: Absolutely not. Any additional power needed is sourced directly from the main power grid – exactly as you currently have. Q: Can everyone use solar power? A: Anyone who owns a property – residential/ commercial or investment, can utilise the benefits of solar power. Q: Why should we use solar power? What are its benefits? A: There are many benefits to sustainable solar power, these include; protecting you and your family from rising power costs, reducing your carbon footprint, increasing the value of your property and being paid by your electricity provider for the power which you generate. Q: What do I need to understand about the installation of the system and who installs it? A: When agreeing to utilise solar power you need to be informed – some questions to ask are: • Is the designer and installer accredited?

• What is the accreditation number? • How many system have they installed and how often? • Do the modules and inverters meet Australian standards? • Will my metre box support a solar system? Q: Who stocks these products? A: Products are available from many well know, and not so well known, international manufacturers. It is important to understand that warranties will be well supported for the life of the product. Q: How do I get professional advice on what is best for my property and me? Firstly, an on-site appraisal from an expert is essential. A professional consultant will meet with you to discuss your personal requirements and what you wish to achieve. A personal and customised information pack should then be provided to you, along with the associated costs for your solution. Installation times should be short (up to two weeks) as government changes can come quick. So what are you waiting for? Free yourself from rising power bills and capture the potential of solar with Empyreal Energy today. For more information please visit www.empyrealenergy.com.au or call 1800 822 653

SCorpio 23 October-21 November Can you say dysfunctional? Scorps will need to address those family issues this month. Beware the stinging tale from this feisty starsign. Stand in the way and hell may break loose. Find a friend, grab a hug and understand that not every day is the same, some are simply designed to drink bubbles

Aries 21 March-19 April Suppressed hurts are set to burst. Unresolved ex issues? Emotional baggage is such a drag. Send it on a one-way trip. It’s time to grab some wine and call in your friends for a good old vent. You won’t feel so alone and it’s always good for your soul.

MOTORING PROFILE

Need for G

old Coast youngster Scott McLaughlin has become the youngest V8 Supercar driver ever! Vying for the top spot, he competes against Australia’s racing greats, as well as other racing wunderkinds trying to carve out a career in the high-speed sport. The kiwi-born racing prodigy has always had speed in his blood, with his parents Wayne and Diane competing in Go-Karts prior to having children. But it was Scott who was eager to try his luck at the V8s. After idolising racing champ Greg Murphy for as long as he could remember, and watching the local GoKart races in his hometown of Hamilton, New Zealand, Scott was hooked. Relocating to Australia certainly did not curb this young gun’s aspirations of becoming a racing household name. Scott’s next ten years were spent competing around Australian and international race circuits on four small tyres achieving huge Karting success, including the venture of proudly representing New Zealand at the Go-Karting World Finals at La Conca, Italy. Returning home with a 5th in the world ranking only fueled Scott’s hunger for more. While juggling his year ten studies, the Karting ace continued scoring medal after medal, trophy after trophy, and before long he was turning the heads of racing legends Ross and Jimmy Stone of Stone Brothers Racing. The brother duo provided Scott with a taste of the beast of a V8 Supercar as he clocked times just over a second slower than usual

August 2011

Stone Brothers Racing drivers Shane van Gisbergen and Alex Davison. The unreal experience, as Scott describes, manifests his maturity and potential, and, despite his age, provided enough to warrant Scott with a V8 Supercar drive in the Fujitsu series - a development racing chain that operates the same V8 Supercars as those in the main game series. With no Supercar driving experience, Scott took a giant leap from G-Karts to V8s, breaking the record and becoming the youngest V8 Supercar driver in history at the unworldly age of 16. With the encouragement and support of his friends, family and teachers, Scott completed school in year ten and commenced a fulltime apprenticeship as a fabricator at Stone Brothers Racing, while setting his footprint on the racetrack as one to watch. Reaching speeds of up to 298 km/h, Scott was barely off his L-plates before making his debut in the V8 Supercar Fujitsu Championship Series. Finishing 12th in his inaugurating season, Scott secured his spot as a future candidate for the next generation of V8 Supercars. Now aged 18, Scott is contesting in his second year of the V8 Supercar Fujitsu series and currently sits fourth in the Championship standings, holding his own against ex-main game V8 Supercar drivers Paul Morris and Cameron McConville. Although Scott still has a lot to accomplish before stepping into a main game V8 Supercar,

48

he certainly has his goals firmly set. Once a twinkle in a six-year-old’s eye, Scott’s dream of breaking into the big time and achieving supercar stardom is closer than ever before.

RAISING THE STAKES The new Grand Cherokee looks to raise the benchmark in sub fifty grand SUV’s

J

eep brand vehicles are among the most easily recognised in the world and their latest installment to the SUV bunch proves why. First impressions are that the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee looks set to raise the bar in the sub fifty grand SUV division, with sophisticated styling, fuel-efficient engines, and a raft of clever new technology and features. Coming onto the market with a fresh redesign for 2011, the family friendly SUV gets an advanced car-like unibody platform, the choice of Pentastar V-6 or Hemi V-8 engines, and is arguably the best thing to emerge from the now-obsolete Daimler Chrysler partnership. The designers have clearly paid a lot of attention to detail on the new Jeep. Although it’s not hard to see the design influence from that in its kind, one can assure you the powertrains, interior and styling are all Jeep. There is a bolder, more distinct front-end design, complete with the trademark seven-slot grille and euro-style lines down the side of the car and a wrap around taillight assembly. The finishing touch is the five spoke polished alloys on the entry model Laredo, while the premium Limited and Overland editions get 20-inch wheels. This combination of American chic and German engineering ensures that the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is relatively unique in the market. It’s not just the exterior skin that gets the euro treatment either. The panel gaps have been reduced, the doors close with that nice quality thud, and elements like the speed of the windshield and short front and rear overhangs come together to create what is a very polished, if not sporty SUV look. www.getitmagazine.com.au

Inside, the package gets even better! The interior cabin treatment even on the entrylevel Laredo definitely has a premium feel to it, with high-quality materials, soft touch plastics and some nice Black Elm effect panels on the fascia and door trim, put the Grand Cherokee at the top of its class. Features such as Selec-Terrain, Quadra Lift air suspension system, reversing camera, HID Xenon headlamps, 18-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, keyless Enter ‘n’ Go, duel pane panoramic sunroof, heated seats, and new sound dampening elements are only a small sample of what’s on offer. Now for the driving experience. Two powertrains are offered with the new Grand Cherokee, including the brand-new 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and the company’s improved 5.7-litre HEMI V8 – all mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Hit the keyless start button, and the V6 purrs away effortlessly with a surprising level of refinement and very low noise levels. And after a couple of hundred kilometres across a mixed bag of tarmac and off road terrain, the all-new Grand Cherokee shocks most in that its on-road ability is now well and truly on par with its considerable off-road ability seen in its past models. While there have been massive improvements throughout the new Grand Cherokee, the biggest leap forward is in the ride and handling department. That said you’ll probably want

to go ahead and tick the option box that says Quadra-Lift. It’s Jeep’s new closed air suspension system, which provides up to 104 millimetres of extra lift across five ride height settings. There’s another bit of tricky electronic gear on board too: it’s called the Select-Terrain system and it automatically adjusts and coordinates 12 vehicle management systems whether it be mud, sand, snow or rock - all with a simple turn of a dial. Overall, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is a highly accomplished SUV with oodles more cachet and features than anything else in its price range. With all the luxury and the muscle to appeal to both professionals and adventurer-seekers, it’s a dead-set must for any SUV shopping list.

LAST WORD

Real life, raw talent, and romantic encounters. Real

life: Born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon on March 22, 1976, the New Orleans gal seemed certain to follow in the medical footsteps of her mother and father. At school, the self-confessed “bookworm” excelled and was taken on at the famous Harpeth Hall where she was both a cheerleader and twice a debutante. But when she was a mere seven years old, the parents of a friend decided to run an ad for their flower shop and little Reese was chosen as the model. Immediately, she was hooked, beginning acting lessons and forming daydreams of movie stardom while taking on more modelling gigs. “My mother still thinks that this acting thing is a hobby, and one day I’m going to tell her I want to become a brain

REESE WITHERSPOON surgeon or something,” a younger Reese once said. In 1990, Reese and her friends decided to try out as extras for a film being shot near by and were given some lines to read. The casting directors were so blown away by Reese that she was flown to L.A. for a screen test. Within a month she was hired as the star of the film. The film in question is of course The Man in the Moon and it began the 14-year-old Reese Witherspoon on the road to stardom.

Raw talent: Reese made a case for all the

good girls this year, scooping up the highprofile Generation Award trophy at the MTV Movie Awards. Reflecting on her body of work, the golden girl had some insights about the state of fame and, specifically, famous females in her industry. “I know it’s cool to be bad, I get it - but it’s also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show.” With thunderous applause from the audience, the actress continues: “When I came up in this business, if you made a sex tape, you were embarrassed. You hid it under your bed.” But she didn’t stop there. “And if you took naked pictures of yourself on your cellphone, you hide your face people! Hide your face!” Some took the comments as a dig at Blake Lively, who was recently involved in a nude picture scandal. Regardless, Reese’s comments impressed the Ministry, serving as a healthy reminder that some of the celebrities we cover empower themselves as role models instead of camera-phone models.

Romance:

Over the course of her very public life, Reese has been married once before (to Ryan Phillippe) and even dated Jake Gyllenhaal for quite a bit of time. With new congratulatory wishes to Reese and Jim, we take a look back at Reese’s dating history. Before meeting and marrying Ryan, she had been romantically linked to Jason London, Stephen Dorff, Chris O’Donnell and Mark Wahlberg, but it was her Cruel Intentions co-star who swept her off her feet. Marrying in 1999, the pair quickly started a family with the arrival of their daughter, Ava, in September of that year. Four years later, they welcomed their son, Deacon. Before they split in 2006, Witherspoon opened up about married life, noting that it wasn’t always easy. Revealing that she and Phillippe went to couple’s therapy, she said, “We’ve done that in the past, and it’s always struck me as odd that people grabbed onto that story and made it sound so negative. In what capacity is working on yourself or your marriage a bad thing? What marriage isn’t a journey? If you don’t have money to go to therapy, there’s always church. You can get together with groups and friends and talk about things with other couples.” After divorcing Ryan in 2007, Reese was spotted with her Rendition co-star Jake Gyllenhaal. The two tried to keep their relationship quiet, but after being photographed together multiple times, it was Ryan who let the cat out of the bag. But the couple was broken up by November 2009.

After several months alone, Reese began dating talent agent Jim Toth. The pair’s announcement of their engagement came after nearly a year of dating. Witherspoon opened up about being in a relationship with someone who’s not a celebrity, saying: “I have a little perspective on this. I wouldn’t say it’s easier. Every relationship has its own dynamic. But what I’m finding out is that it’s very comfortable to be with somebody who understands my career, but doesn’t do what I do. He’s a great guy.” And although we all hoped the tabloids were right when they claimed that Reese Witherspoon bought a maternity dress during her honeymoon to Belize, insiders confirm the story is NOT true. But there’s still time, right?

“I know it’s cool to be bad, I get it - but it’s also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show...”
