Australian police probe Burtonport man’s death as mine boss offers sympathies A JOINT police and Department of Mines and Petroleum investigation has begun into the death of a Co Donegal man in Western Australia yesterday. As donegaldaily reported last night, the 28-year-old was Sean McBride from Burtonport. He was an employee of Celtic Scaffolding and was carrying out maintenance work from scaffolding on a jetty in Dampier when part of the scaffolding fell into the water about noon yesterday. His body was recovered by police divers just before midnight local time. Fellow workers – many from Ireland – have told police they did not see the accident, but heard the sound of falling scaffolding.
When they went to see what had happened, they could see Sean’s hard hat floating in the water. An emergency rescue plan was launched Sean was pronounced dead at the scene. Sam Walsh, Rio Tinto’s Chief executive Iron Ore and Australia, said the fatality was a tragic event, and one that would be fully investigated in cooperation with the authorities. He said: “I offer my sincere condolences to family, friends and teammates. We are ensuring that appropriate counselling services are available. “We seek to achieve a zeroharm workplace across our operations, and this tragedy is
a terrible reminder that we can never be too careful, that we can never place too high a priority on ensuring a safe workplace. “Rio Tinto has not experienced a fatality at its Pilbara operations since August 2003, but this incident highlights the fact that there is never any room for complacency in the effort to ensure a completely safe workplace.” All operations at EII have ceased while the accident is investigated. Police have cordoned off the scene, while a Rio Tinto investigation team is due to arrive on Monday. In Burtonport there is disbelief at what has happened. Local councillor David Alcorn told
donegaldaily.com: “He was a good young man who came from a good local family. Obviously the whole community is in deep shock.” Burtonport parish priest Fr Pat Ward said: “The community is absolutely devastated. It’s a huge blow in the area and for Seán’s family, who are very wellrespected.” Sean, who has two brothers and three sisters, returned to Donegal earlier this year from Australia to complete paperwork. Friends say he was delighted when he secured a four-year work permit to enable him to return Down Under six weeks ago.

COVER STORY
Senator’s anger at €5M new equipment ‘lying in boxes for two years’ EQUIPMENT used by the Coast Guard at Malin Head to coordinate rescues could fail at any time - whilst millions of euros worth of new gear lies unused in boxes two years after it was bought, a Senator has claimed. Fianna Fail senator Mark Daly made the astonishing claims yesterday, claims dened by the Department of Transport. He said last night: “This five million euro worth of equipment which was purchased by the Coast Guard Service less than two years ago is sitting in boxes at the coast guard facility in Blanchardstown. “This communication equipment is used to coordinate the rescue of people in need of coast guard assistance on land and sea and should have been installed in Malin and Valencia marine rescue coordination centres two years ago.” And in an astonishing claim Senator Daly went on: “I can’t understand it because the coastguard service are well aware that the existing equipment in Malin and Valencia in Co Kerry is dangerously obsolete. “In 2007 the manufacturers of the equipment Motorola issued what is in the termed known in the industry as a death certificate which stated that the equipment is liable to

catastrophic failure at any moment.” The department of transport which has ultimate responsibility for this issues says the situation isn’t effecting the ability of the coast guard to do its job. However Senator Daly disagreed. He went on: “That would be fine as long as the equipment keeps going but they are aware the existing equipment could fail at any moment. “Now they are saying people shouldn’t be afraid but the fact that our marine rescue coordination centres has perfectly good equipment but it is sitting in boxes is the reason that they should be afraid. “And the fact that our existing equipment in Malin and Valencia is obsolete and has a death certificate on it, is a matter for concern for anybody who relies on the coastguard service to keep them safe at sea.” Department of Transport say that plans are well ahead and in fact they say that they are currently underway to upgrade and enhance the station houses in Malin and Valencia and that is the reason for this delay that the two sets of work will have to go hand in hand.
Senator Daly argued however: “They have been instructed by 5 different ministers for transport since 2002 that Malin and Valencia have to be upgraded and retained as marine resuce coordination centres for the coastguard service yet they have failed to do that. “They were instructed by the minister of transport Noel Dempsey at the time in 2009 to buy the equipment, they did carry out that instruction, but the equipment is still sitting in boxes and they are now paying thousands of euro every month just to keep a warranty on it. This is necessary equipment, this is vital equipment and the fact that the existing equipment can fail at any moment.” He added: “They have been talking about upgrading those two buildings since they
YOU COULDN’T MAKE IT UP… FORECASTERS EXPECTING SNOW IN DONEGAL
OUR two days of glorious sunshine last week will seem like a distant memory tonight with weather forecasters predicting SLEET and SNOW for Donegal! Following three days of steady rain and showers across the county, Irish Weather Online forecaster Peter O’Donnell has more bad news for us yesterday morning. And while the sleet and snow will be on higher ground, it’s making this June one of the coldest ever with temperatures well below what is expected for this time of the year. O’Donnell said up to 20mms of rain will hit the county today. And he adds that it will be “very cool with lows 3-7 C. A band of sleety showers is likely
to push through Donegal into parts of north Connacht and west Ulster and snow could accumulate on higher ground.” That means higher ground like Mount Errigal could get a dusting of snow overnight. Today isn’t looking much better either. “Further rain that may mix with sleet or snow over higher parts of the north, while central and southern counties will see intermittent showers with some hail and thunder. Gusty WNW winds 20-35 mph. Daytime highs will only reach 7-9 C in the north. Rainfalls of 10-20 mms possible,” he reports. Temperatures will pick up by the weekend to around 15C or 16C but generally still wet with showers.

purchased that equipment over two years ago now they have been telling various ministers for transport over the last 9 years that they will carry out their instructions in terms of Malin and Valencia Coastguard service and yet they have failed to do. “I am asking the minister with responsibility for the coastguard service to ensure that the equipment is installed as a matter of life or death. I will also be asking the head of the coastguard service to come before the Oireacthas Committee to explain why the equipment is sitting in Blanchardstown and why the taxpayer is currently paying a warranty on it just for it to sit in Blanchardstown and why is he allowing it to sit in storage when it is vitally needed?”

Crook Francois now living openly in France
A wealthy businessman who left Donegal leaving investors millions of euro out of pocket is living openly in France – and has told TV interviewers he will return to Donegal ‘to clear my name’.! Crooked French enterpeneur Francois De Dietrich owned restaurants and an estate agency in Donegal and was seen as a respected businessman by some local people. However he fled the country before Christmas after donegaldaily revealed he was scamming innocent investors out of millions of euro. Now a BBC Spotlight team has tracked down the smooth-talking businessman who claims he is being prevented from getting the money back to investors. The programme, ‘The Mystery of Swanky Frankie’, will be broadcast on Tuesday evening on BBC 1 Northern Ireland at 10.35pm and will feature an interview with the shame-faced crook. The businessman was given the nickname by his former employees who said he loved wining and dining and moving in wealthy circles. The programme-makers travelled to a number of European countries in an effort to track down De Dietrich. Among the countries they visited was Estonia and France but the BBC have decided not to reveal where the businessman is living because he claims his life is in danger from disgruntled investors. However we know he has been spotted in Brittany in north west France recently by a chef who used to work for him. And six weeks ago a group of Donegal investors met him in Estonia. The BBC confirms donegaldaily.com’s investigations and shows investors across Ireland
including Mullingar, Cork, Galway, Dublin and Donegal are all owed money from De Dietrich’s ‘get rich scheme’. It is estimated that at least 200 people invested in the scheme – many using their nesteggs which were supposed to be for their children’s education or their retirement funds. It is understood that up to €20 million may have been invested in the scheme by people across southern Ireland. Six investigative agencies including the Criminal Assets Bureau, the PSNI Fraud Sqaud and the Garda Fraud Squad are investigating De Dietrich’s activities. The businessman, who denied he was operating a Ponzi scheme, told investors they would get 40% profit on their investment in just a number of weeks. He claimed he was buying liquidated stock incluidng designer clothing and airplane seats and selling them on at large profits. De Dietrich used two wellknown former Donegal sportstars as agents to get investers for the scheme. However the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in Northern Ireland froze De Dietrich’s assets fearing he was oeprating an illegal scheme. He was due to appear in court last year but failed to do so and an arrest warrant was issued for him. When he failed to turn up a second time he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for contempt of court for failing to turn up. When tracked down by the BBC, De Dietrich claimed he had done nothing wrong and that the FSA was preventing him access to the cash and from paying money out to the investers. He also says he has not ruled out returning to Ireland for an appeal to his prison sentence which takes place at the end of June. The PSNI are expected to quiz the BBC Spotlight team over the crook’s whereabouts as they have an international warrant for his arrest. And last night sources in the FSA dismissed Francois’s innocence claims, saying it was ‘a bit rich’ for the crook to claim the legitimate authority was in any way responsible for the scam and seizing investors cash.
Carndonagh to get new Town Park - McConalogue THE new Town Park planned for Barrack Hill in Carndonagh will be a very significant addition to the town and local community according to local TD Charlie McConalogue. Deputy McConalogue has welcomed confirmation that funding has been approved for the project. “A total of €666,000 will be spent on the project with €500,000 approved this week from Inishowen Development Partnership combined with funding already secured from Inishowen Electoral Area Councillors meaning the project will be delivered. “The Barrack Hill Town Park Project will consist of a new childrens playground for the town and surrounding area, a substantial town park with a network of walkways, a unique cycle cross track for cycling enthusiasts, outdoor exercise equipment for the elderly as well as public art works. “This really is fantastic news for the town and surrounding area especially in the difficult economic times we are in. The facilities which will form part of the project will have something of interest to almost everyone in the community and with its central location just behind the church on Barrack Hill will be a facility at the heart of the town.
“The project which is led by the community based Carndonagh Playground Development Committee is a unique one in that it is a community led application in association with the local authority and supported by Leader funding. It is the first of its kind in the country from my knowledge to have this structure and required the approval of the Minister for the Environment before it could proceed. “It comes after much hard work and effort exploring various funding avenues which makes the fact that it has now secured funding all the more rewarding. I would like to acknowledge the work of everyone in getting the project to this stage, including Carndonagh Playground Development Committee, Inishowen Devlopment Partnership, Inishowen County Councillors and Donegal County Council for whom Aideen Doherty has done trojan work in assisting the project get to this stage. “There is still a lot of work still ahead for all involved to deliver the project but with the funding now secured we can look forward to the delivery of a project that will be of significant value to the town and local community,” concluded deputy McConalogue.

Presidential Reception for Switch Business Systems following Business Ambassador Award. LOCAL Business I.T. company Switch Business Systems have been awarded the prestigious title of Intertrade Ireland Business Ambassadors at an event held in Dublin’s Mansion House this week. As part of the event the business ambassadors were invited to a Presidential Reception at Áras an Uachtaráin, where they met with President Mary McAleese and her husband Senator Martin McAleese. The award comes following Switch Business Systems’ participation in InterTrade Ireland’s Acumen programme which helped fund their progression into the Northern Ireland market. In Dublin, Aiden Porter and Kathryn McBrearty from Switch Business Systems were joined by other Irish business, all of whom were addressed by President
McAleese and by Richard Bruton, Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation. Over 50 TDs were also in attendance at the event in Mansion House. Speaking after the event, Aiden Porter, Managing Director said that he felt honoured that his business had been selected for such an award. “To be given recognition for our achievements in these markets is a fantastic boost for our business and is also testament for the hard work of all our staff. We were delighted to have been given the opportunity to meet President McAleese, especially following her recent high-profile engagements and as her second Presidential term is coming to a close”, explained Aiden. “She spoke very optimistically about cross border trade within Ireland and made sure that each and every one of us
felt welcome at Áras and Uachtaráin.” “In 2009 we approached InterTradeIreland for funding to aid our development into the Northern Ireland market. As a result we were able to employ a full-time sales person and have since won some major contracts, gained substantial business and increased our market presence there.” We always knew that our products and services were good enough to enter that market but found that despite our ideal geographical location we were struggling to infiltrate the market properly. InterTradeIreland gave us that opportunity through their Acumen programme and accepting the Business Ambassador award makes all the hard work very worthwhile. Switch Business Systems offer a complete business I.T. solution from business
process auditing, to implementation, training and support. Their target areas range from basic accounting, payroll and staff attendance packages up to large scale ERP systems for Sales, Distribution, Manufacturing and Recycling. The Demoroom facility and its location has been instrumental in the company’s growth since opening in 2008 at Lisfannon, Buncrana. Maurice McCracken of Whitemountain Quarries Ltd (Lagan Group) recently commented: “It is amazing that such a facility exists where you can not only view but also use all software available to your industry before you purchase.” Switch Business Systems can be contacted on +353(0)74 9364260 or by e-mail: info@switchsystems.ie for advice on all your business I.T. requirements.

c i h C Accessories
Cushion accessories Antique brooches, fabric flower corsages and ribbons give cushion covers a totally fresh and unique new look.
Choose natural textures
Wicker storage baskets and rattan chairs add texture and interest to the white or muted space and are practical too - hiding away clutter and standing up to general wear and tear.
Alternative plant pots Ceramic buckets and enamel jugs make interesting plant pots, which can have pride of place inside or out.
Mix and match furniture
If you keep the main elements of the room neutral, like the walls and floors, you can add an eclectic mix of furniture finds which will work together in the same space with seeming overbearing.
Lace window screens For a pretty alternative to net curtains, staple lace panels onto wooden frames that fit neatly into your window frame. Bold bright soft furnishings Be brave. With white walls and pale upholstery you can mix and match bright colours and patterns.
Light curtains Furniture revamp
Don’t be afraid to repaint and recover furniture to make it work in your space. John Lewis has a huge selection of fabrics to choose from.
Back to basics
Select no fuss window dressings particularly on large windows to maximise the light that enters the space.
This look will work for the men in your life too - make space for an area where there’s no florals and frills; just pared-back style where they can have their own space. An old wooden ladder painted white adds an element of shabby chic without being girly.
Cushion cover facelift Knitted squares and napkins make great value cushions covers inject some colour with a bed sheet that can double as a throw.
Cosy corner
Create a retreat away from the stresses of the outside world and all the household chores with a comfy window seat where you can take some to time for yourself. Matching curtains and cushions are allowed for this look.
Striking display
Have fun with your accessories and group lots together for a statement shabby chic display. Look out for open storage units, like pidgeon hold shelf units, where you can show off ornaments and flea market treasures.
Classic country
If you want a warmer look, swap white upholstery for warm lilacs and cover bare floorboards with a floral carpet or large rug. This shabby chic room would carry you through from summer to winter.

An incredible movie featuring Letterkenny in 1947
THE new X Factor judge taking the place of Cheryl Cole has a bizarre link to Donegal… Rapper Tulisa Contostavlos has revealed her cousins were in the group which wrote the famous song ‘Mary from Dungloe’! They were sons of Tommy Byrne, who won the Feis Ceoil three times in a row and later went on to sing with Val Doonican and the Four Ramblers. By the 1960s, Tommy Byrne’s sons Brian and Mick had formed a musical group called the Spicelanders, which played different folk clubs and participated in various ballad contests around Ireland. Soon, the Byrne brothers joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Donal Lunny and merged their two groups – Lunny’s had been called The Emmet Folk – to create Emmet Spiceland. The band topped the Irish charts with hits like Báidín Fheidhlimi, Down By The Sally
Gardens and, most famously, Mary From Dungloe – the song credited with sparking the creation of the Mary from Dungloe International Festival. The festival continues to this day and the 2011 programme takes place next month in Donegal, with organisers writing on the festival site that the April 1968 Emmet Spiceland release of the traditional ballad ‘could well be described as the foundation stone on which the “Mary from Dungloe” Festival was about to be built. The rapper’s mum is from Dublin and she admitted: “I’ve still got loads of family there. Most of them are over 60, so I don’t expect them to come to the shows when we play in Ireland. “Mum used to take me to Ireland on holidays when I was younger. I remember visiting Cork. She’s still very close to her roots.”

We talked about one of the most important features of any exercise regime‌.attitude. Your attitude will determine the level of success or failure you will encounter, and the amount of enjoyment you will derive from exercise as the right attitude is priceless.
THE ROAD AHEAD
Safer Journeys & Positive Perspectives
Today we will take a closer look at the physical elements of exercise. Exercise comes in so many different forms therefore ensuring that the physical impact that it has will vary greatly. Two constants however will happen when you exercise, and that is (1) the strengthening of the heart muscle and (2) the expansion of the lung capacity. Regardless if your chosen form of exercise is squash or bowls or every pastime in between these two the benefits will be felt. But what does this mean? The heart is a muscle and like every other muscle in the body if it is not exercised it will weaken. However the weakening of the heart muscle has much graver consequences than that of skeletal muscles weakening, and this is where the coronary problems begin. We know that the heart is responsible for supplying the body with blood, so with a weak heart muscle it will be unable to perform this function properly. This failure has often got a fatal conclusion, so the necessity for a strong heart muscle cannot be overstated. Aspects that cause a weakened heart are a lack of activity to exercise it regularly, poor nutritional habits, being overweight and stress. It is quite common that all of these circumstances co-exist and all accumulate to give us a weakened heart muscle. All of this may sound quite grim but it can be easily combated with a little exercise. The second significant physical benefit of exercise are larger lungs. As the heart pumps the blood around the body it carries oxygen to all the muscle fibres, and this is the most important fuel for the body to operate. Whereas the body can exist without food for weeks, the lack of oxygen will be fatal in a matter of minutes, underlying its significance. When we exercise the lungs must expand in order to keep up with the increased demands of the body, and when this is done with regularity then the lungs remain expanded. One of the main enemies of good lung capacity is of course, smoking. Smoking allied with a dose of laziness is guaranteed to diminish our lung capacity ensuring that we can no longer walk the length of ourselves. Whether it is to become more proficient at our chosen sport, lose weight, gain bulk, do a marathon or climb Mt. Everest, or even quite simply to have the energy to get us through our daily routines we will benefit form having a strong heart and bigger lungs. With these attributes we will inevitably become stronger, fitter and slimmer. So without further ado start today to put into action a plan that will enable you to live better, and it is that simple. All that the body asks in return for giving us the glorious gift of life is that we treat it with the respect that it deserves with a suitable exercise regime and good nutrition. And never take our heart and lungs for granted again. If there are any fitness or health issues that you would like me to cover then please email me at peter@getitweekly.ie

TWO DAY CONFERENCE Young Drivers: The Road to Safety Young People: Mental Health and Wellbeing DATE: VENUE:
20 to 21 June 2011 Inishowen Gateway Hotel, Buncrana, Co. Donegal
The aim of the conference is to share knowledge and skills, interventions and models of practice with young people in the important areas of driver safety and mental health and well being. The conference Steering Committee would like to announce this cross border and international event which will bring together practitioners from Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Australia to share knowledge, practice and programmes about two important issues: Monday 20 June 2011 Tuesday 21 June 2011
Young Drivers: The Road to Safety Young People: Mental Health and Wellbeing
There are valid reasons for locating this event in Inishowen as on 12 July 2010 the area experienced the worst road collision in the history of the Irish state with the loss of eight members of the community, seven of them young people. It is important and timely to bring together practitioners from various areas/disciplines to explore how we can address safety on our roads; raise awareness about safer driving and what programmes support safer road use. It is also important to consider how to support communities impacted by the trauma of road traffic collisions and deaths. The aim of day two is to understand how we can improve resiliency, coping skills a positive perspective and brighter future in youth mental health and well being. The annual suicide rates in Ireland have increased by 24% from 2008 and increasingly those working with young people are witnessing complex mental health needs

It’s official, summer is here. A sunny day is enough to lift the heart – and also enough to make blokes drag out the same T-shirts they’ve had since they first heard Metallica and when shaving was something to be boasted about. This year, why not try a wardrobe update? It could mean you hanging up your internet dating shoes and being accepted into all sorts of bars, not just the ones that women wouldn’t go into alone. There are plenty of brightly coloured tops around this year (eye-searing shades are very 2011, don’t you know). Try Next for striped polo shirts, or if you like to send a message to your fellow humans then Republic has a great selection of T-shirts with truly humorous prints, as does Jacamo. For those who prefer shirts, then again Next comes up trumps with a very summery, floral, short-sleeved shirt while Lands’ End has a classic white shirt that looks perfect when teamed with well-fitting jeans and a rumpled hair-do. While there are some great jeans in the shops at the moment, if you dare to be different then check out some shorts: White Stuff and Matalan are good for hangingout-at-the-beachlooking-cool styles, or go to Austin Reed if you prefer the more dapper look. (For a winning accessory with these add F&F’s trilby, you won’t regret it.) This is Ireland, however, so you will need an extra layer for the cool evenings. Grab a hoodie from White Stuff or French Connection, or a smokin’ leather jacket (we like the one from M&S). So there you have it: new clothes, new you. And yes, you do have to bin your Def Leppard T-shirt. Trust us, you’ll get on better without it.

PC/MAC Tip
How to search like a pro
Mother’s Day l l l l l l l l l l 6/10
The internet is big, really, really big. And it keeps growing bigger every day. If you want to search it effectively you’re going to need to develop a couple of tricks to help you narrow the search. Here’s a few real easy ones to integrate into your next search: Using +, - and “ “ (quotes) to narrow your searches: Lets say you were looking up apples on Google.com. If you just type in “apples” you get 22 million returns. A few more sites than you can check in an afternoon so lets narrow the search down. Let’s say that what you’re really interested in is green apples. To see all the apple websites that also have the word “green” on them type this:
Release Date: 10th June 2011
Point Blank l l l l l l l l l l 7/10 Release Date: 10th June 2011
Now you will only see those apple sites that also have the word green on them. Unfortunately we are still getting almost 6 million returned websites:
To narrow the search even more lets eliminate a word. For example, some of the websites are also about Apple Computers so lets get rid of them by typing this:
That reduced about 1 million of the returns but we still have about 5 million web pages to check out. A final way to narrow the search is to use quotes to narrow the search to an exact phrase. For example if what we’re really interested in is granny smith apples we can add that to the search like this:
FILM
Louisiana Story l l l l l l l l l l 7/10
Camera Tip
Now I will only see websites that have the words “granny smith” on them in that order spelled the way I spelled them. Using quotes is always a great way to narrow a search and in my example I was able to go from having 22 million web pages returned from my original search for “apples” to around 220,000 by my last example.
Posing Tips for Portraits
Release Date: 8th June 2011 Directed by: Robert J. Flaherty Written by: Frances H. Flaherty, Robert J. Flaherty Starring: Joseph Boudreaux, Lionel Le Blanc, E. Bienvenu, Frank Hardy, C.P. Guedry Runtime: 1 hour 18 minutes
A young Cajun boy named Alexander Napolean Ulysses Latour spends his time on a Louisiana bayou. There he plays, fishes and hunts, worrying only about the alligators which infest its waters. The boy’s innocent routine changes forever when his father signs a lease agreement with an oil company which brings a derrick into their corner of the bayou.
When taking head shot and upper body portraits of people one simple posing tip that I’ve picked up over the years is to angle the shoulders of your subject rather than to have them even or squared in your shot. While the shoulders might not seem like an important aspect of a portrait they can actually set the tone for an image as they’re the widest part of your subject and they are visually what the main point of focus for your image (the head) is sitting upon. Generally speaking, angling the shoulders slightly gives you shot balance and
Got To Run l l l l l l l l l l 6/10 Release Date: 14th June 2011
helps lead your viewer’s eye into the shot towards your main focal point. It also stops your subject seeming out of proportion as it lessons the width of the shoulders slightly. Getting this effect might mean actually getting your subject to lean in one direction or another or it could simply mean getting them to turn their body a little so you’re not photographing them directly front on. Another technique can be to frame your subject slightly off centre so that one shoulder is actually out of the frame. Some believe that in posi-
tioning your subjects shoulders make the one closest to camera the lower of the two – but I’ve found that you can get an interesting effect by doing it the other way around too. Of course – this isn’t a hard and fast rule and sometimes the completely front on symmetrical shot can leave a shot can have a very powerful (and often confronting) impact upon your readers also. So as always – experiment with posing your subject in a variety of ways and see what works best for you and your subject.

MUFF Festival committee are looking for a few good men and women to enter this year’s race to become mayor of the border village. The committee says the mayoral campaign offers a great opportunity to combine “the best of craic” with an opportunity to fundraise for your favourite charity, community or sports group. Muff village gears up for an exciting mayoral campaign. Over the years the campaign has managed to raise over €400,000 for good causes both locally and internationally, and is a great focal point in the run-up to the annual festival. “So perhaps this is your year to get out there and raise some funds for your club, group, or charity, by putting yourself forward as a candidate and organising some fun fundraising events, even in these difficult financial times,” said committee PRO, Fearghal O’Boyle. He said ‘Black’ Mickey Doherty was among notable former mayors to launch successful political careers on the back of the campaign. “So get your friends together (if you haven’t got any, we’ll organise a few for you) and get in touch with the Muff Festival committee to enter the only election worth talking about this year,” quipped Fearghal. All interested candidates should contact Tara Reddin, chairperson, Muff Festival committee, Muff Resource Centre. Call 074 93 94572 or email info@ mufffestival.com

Údarás to keep jobs role – but must work more closely with other agencies Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, Dinny McGinley T.D., announced today that final decisions have been taken by the Government regarding the new definition of the Gaeltacht and the implementation structures for the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language. THESE decisions were taken at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (31 May 2011) and provide for Údarás na Gaeltachta to maintain a job creation function, but in conjunction with other agencies on larger projects. The Minister of State said: “I am delighted that final decisions have been made by the Government regarding the implementation of the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language. “As a result, officials in my Department, the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, can proceed with drafting the Heads of the Gaeltacht Bill. I hope that the Bill will be published as soon as possible, depending on the Government’s legislative schedule.” The new definition of the Gaeltacht will be based on the 20-Year Strategy and on the recommendations made in the Comprehensive Linguistic Study of the Use of Irish in the Gaeltacht. The Minister of State said: “My Department, in conjunction with other State bodies, will work closely with Gaeltacht communities on the ground in order to assist them in developing and implementing language plans, which will incorporate all aspects of community life.” Regarding the implementation structures for the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language, the Minister of State said: “These Government decisions will ensure that existing structures will be used to deliver the Strategy and that the functions of the key stakeholders with responsibility for implementing the Strategy, both within and outside of the Gaeltacht, will be clearly defined.” The Minister of State said: “As a result of these Government decisions, I believe that the future of Údarás na Gaeltachta is secure, that Údarás na Gaeltachta will retain its statutory functions and that Údarás na Gaeltachta and other enterprise agencies will cooperate to ensure investment in the Gaeltacht.
BACKGROUND: The 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010 – 2030 is available at http://www. pobail.ie/en/IrishLanguage. New definition of the Gaeltacht * Provision will be made in the Gaeltacht Bill for a new statutory definition of the Gaeltacht, which will be based on linguistic criteria rather than on geographical areas, as is currently the case. * Provision will be made under the legislation for a language planning process in order to prepare language plans at community level for each Gaeltacht area and for the Minister to approve and review
those plans periodically. * Statutory status will be given to a new type of ‘network Gaeltacht’ area outside the existing statutory Gaeltacht areas. These will be areas, predominantly in urban communities, that will have a basic critical mass of community and State support for the Irish language. * Gaeltacht Service Towns, i.e. towns which service Gaeltacht areas, will also be given statutory status. Implementation structures under the 20Year Strategy for the Irish Language: * The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will retain primary responsibility for matters concerning the Irish language, both within and outside of the Gaeltacht. * Foras na Gaeilge will continue to fulfil its responsibilities on an all-island basis as an agency of the North South Language Implementation Body. * The Department, in partnership with relevant State bodies, will be responsible for the implementation of the Strategy outside the Gaeltacht. The potential for Foras na Gaeilge to deliver certain elements of the Strategy, on an agreed basis, will be explored. * Údarás na Gaeltachta will be responsible for the implementation of the Strategy within the Gaeltacht. Údarás na Gaeltachta * T he status quo will be maintained regarding the current functions of Údarás na Gaeltachta, including its enterprise functions, subject to the following: 1. statutory provision to enable the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to direct Údarás na Gaeltachta to focus its limited resources towards specific enterprise sectors; and 2. the development of a mechanism to facilitate Údarás na Gaeltachta to cooperate with other enterprise agencies, particularly with regard to significant Gaeltacht projects with high potential. * Provision will be made under the Gaeltacht Bill to significantly reduce the Board of Údarás na Gaeltachta and to end the requirement to hold elections.
Maclochlainn brands Gilmore iniative A Charade SINN Féin Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD has hit out at Tánaiste Eamonn Gilmore’s “diplomatic initiative”, branding it a “charade”. Deputy Mac Lochlainn said: “When the Government’s “Diplomatic Initiative” was announced in conjunction with the ECB/ EU/ IMF Memorandum of Understanding, the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamonn Gilmore outlined what he called a “coordinated diplomatic drive by Ireland to win political support for the discussions we are having with the European Central Bank”. “This was a pledge from the Tánaiste to embark on a drive to gain support for a better deal for the Irish people. In his own words, he was going to ‘put it right’. “Conversely, however, comments made in the Dáil today by Minister of State for Europe Lucinda Creighton confirm that the focus of this Diplomatic Initiative focus is to deliver a different message – the one sent out by the Taoiseach in recent days that “we will pay our debts”. “This weak message reinforces the ECBdriven narrative that the Irish people as a whole were reckless and feckless. Is the Tánaiste’s project, which he launched with great fanfare on April 3rd, anything more than a PR exercise? The question has to be asked. What has the Tánaiste achieved since the launch of this project? What concrete objectives have been achieved? The only outward sign of work done has been giving meaningless prep talks to Ambassadors, Diplomats, and delivering a weak message that Ireland is a good country? At this crisis point in our nation’s history, Ireland needs so much more than this”. “It is clear that this Government has no real strategy to stand up for the interests of the Irish people in Europe. He concluded: “Respected international opinion, such as that of Nobel Prize win-
ning economists Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz, have heavily criticised the crippling impact of the ECB/ EU/ IMF austerity programme on the Irish economy and people. The Irish Government needs to utilise the immense reputation of these economists and many others domestically and internationally to support Ireland’s call for a better, fairer deal. We are not with friends and indeed advocates. However, judging from the comments of Minister Creighton today, the government would prefer to dismiss these opinions, continue to be the obedient ‘partner’ in an unequal union, and pay up”.
“This was a pledge from the Tánaiste to embark on a drive to gain support for a better deal for the Irish people. In his own words, he was going to ‘put it right’.
286 NEW JOBS ANNOUNCED FOR KILLYBEGS KILLYBEGS is celebrating a massive jobs boost today – with 36 new posts in the seafood processing sector and a further 250 in a pilot jobs initiative. The national seafood processing sector has been given a massive jobs boost with the creation of 160 new posts – 36 of them in Killybegs – over the next three years. Simon Coveney, minister for the marine, revealed 18 companies nationwide been approved for grant aid of 1.7 million euro to improve efficiency, promote consolidation and bring in additional income. A pilot jobs initiative for Killybegs has also been announced aimed at creating an additional 250 jobs in the area by 2014. Mr Coveney said the projects approved for support create additional income and employment. “For example, Fastnet
Mussels in Cork will be investing in new capital equipment in order to produce value added cooked mussel products,” he said. “Atlan Fish in Donegal are developing a value added processing area in order to increase production and broaden their product range, while Rockabill Shellfish in Dublin plan to increase production of value added prawn products and improve efficiencies through the installation of energy efficient equipment. “In total 158 new jobs will be created around the country and will be a huge boost to local economies, many in rural coastal communities.” Elsewhere the Killybegs jobs initiative is the result of an economic study carried out for the EU Commission which assessed the status, development and potential diversification of Killybegs as a fisheries dependent community.
Mr Coveney said: “It is clear from this economic report that significant job creation potential exists for fisheries-dependent regions such as Killybegs, provided there is a focus on the natural resources that are obvious to the region. “I am conscious that there needs to be greater integration and ‘joined up thinking’ from state agencies and stakeholders in the region if this potential is to be achieved. With that in mind, I’m establishing a focused expert group to identify a direct series of actions that I believe can deliver 250 jobs in the Killybegs region over the next three years.” The minister added: “I am confident that this model of co-ordinated developmentally focused activity which is concentrated on natural resources can be a good model to drive economic development and job creation in the Killybegs region.”

IFA describes meeting with Minister Coveney as positive IFA President John Bryan led an IFA delegation on livestock, dairy, sheep, poultry and direct payments in a recent meeting with the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine Simon Coveney in Dublin. On direct payments, IFA Deputy President Eddie Downey called on the Minister for a review of the current Charter and said payments must be made on time in 2011. He said the delays of 2010 cannot be tolerated again. In response, Minister Coveney agreed to put a review of the Charter in place and said he will insist that payments are made on time. The Minister also said Ireland will also seek an advance Single Farm Payment from October 16th in 2011. IFA also raised the problem of delays to REPS and AEOS, demanding that payments are made without further delay. John Bryan said Minister Coveney was very strong on protecting the Single Farm Payment in CAP 2013 and the fight against Mercosur. Minister Coveney said “Ireland is leading the way at EU level in the battle against Mercosur”. On livestock, IFA National Livestock Committee Chairman Michael Doran told the Minister the €880m in Single Payment to the livestock sector must be fully protected in CAP 2013. In addition, he highlighted the importance of the Suckler Cow herd and protecting the important live export trade, as well as the Suckler Cow Welfare and Disadvantaged Area Scheme for farmers. At the meeting, IFA National Dairy Committee Chair-
man Kevin Kiersey stressed the importance of intense lobbying in Brussels to obtain greater flexibility on milk quotas in advance of their 2015 abolition, to reduce the damaging impact of superlevy fines and quota costs on Irish farmers’ competitiveness. The Minister said he was committed to continue lobbying with like-minded member states for a “softer” landing on milk quota, although he was very aware of strong opposition from the Commission and many influential member states. He further committed to driving personally the delivery of the Food Harvest 2020 agenda. In response to IFA National Sheep Chairman James Murphy, Minster Coveney said he was very supportive of the IFA proposal for a sheep group on Food Harvest 2020. He said this was a good idea in the context of driving the targets set down in Food Harvest 2020 for the sector. On the €8m Capital Grant Aid on sheep fencing and handling equipment, Minister Coveney said he was conscious of the delays and added that sheep farmers would not have to wait much longer for clearance on their applications. In response to IFA National Poultry Chairman Alo Mohan, Minister Coveney said he understood the pressure on the sector resulting from massive increases in input costs. He said progress is being made on labelling and he was strongly of the view that consumers have the right to know the origin of the meat they purchase. He expressed concern when the quality difference between Irish and imported chicken were outlined to him by Mr. Mohan.

Public health agencies and retailers must do more to reassure consumers on Irish produce IFA Deputy President Eddie Downey said the Food Safety Authority and other public health agencies have confirmed that this outbreak is not an issue for Irish produce. As a result of concern among the public in relation to the outbreak of e-coli in northern Germany, IFA has called on the public health agencies to do more to reassure consumers on the safety of the produce on the shelves. Retailers must also highlight the origin of all fresh produce as there is a plentiful supply of most fruit and vegetables available from Irish producers. He said it was unacceptable that any retailer would fail to honour a supply contract with Irish producers as the easy option in dealing with public concerns.
The role of fertilizer in summer
Feeders strongly resist factory price pressure IFA National Livestock Committee Chairman Michael Doran said factory agents were not succeeding in getting cattle at the lower quoted prices from the factories this week and have had to revert back up towards last week’s prices to get cattle. He said “with no prime cattle coming off grass, supplies are scarce and factories are reliant on cattle out of the sheds. Feeders are not prepared to sell cattle at the lower prices. Michael Doran said despite quotes as low as €3.60/kg, agents have had to pay €3.66 to €3.70/kg to get steers and €3.70 - €3.80/kg for heifers. Bulls are making €3.65 - €3.75/kg. He said feeders are in a very strong position to resist the negative attempts from the factories on cattle prices. The IFA livestock leader said the average R=3= reported Department of Agriculture price paid by the factories last week was €3.72/kg for steers, €3.79/kg heifers and €3.74/kg
for young bulls. He said the Department reported that the factories paid an average of €3.12 for P+3 cows, €3.17 for O= cows and €3.32 for R= cows for week-ending May 29th. Michael Doran said the factories were doing very well with the value of hides and the fifth quarter, which were worth over €100/head or 29c/ kg. He said this is an exceptionally strong return for the meat plants. The IFA livestock leader said all across Europe cattle supplies are tight and should remain so. The EU December 2010 census shows total livestock numbers down over 2.7m head or 1.7%. All groups of cattle numbers are down, with young animals less than 1 year down 0.9%, animals between 1 to 2 years of age down 1.8% and animals over 2 years down 1.4%. Michael Doran said Irish cattle supplies are forecast to be down 120,000 – 140,000 head for 2011 and with the kill back only 5.5% to date,
numbers are going to be very scarce for the second half of the year. Likewise, a similar picture is developing for the UK with total cattle supplies forecast to be back over 100,000 head for the second half of the year. Michael Doran said Europe has responded to the very strong international market for beef with EU exports almost doubled at 485,166t for 2010 compared to only 249,165t for 2009. “Exports to Russia, our largest EU export market were up 167%, while over 70,000t was exported to Turkey and 34,000t to the Lebanon.” Michael Doran pointed out the major jump in the value of EU beef exports up from €615m in 2009 to €1.246bn in 2010. Exports to Turkey were worth an average of €3,575/t. In addition, EU beef imports fell from 437,182t in 2009 to 378,954t in 2010 or 12.5%. Imports from Brazil, have fallen dramatically down from 344,000t in 2007 to 145,000t in 2010.
Ireland moves one step closer to eradicating BVD as Animal Health Ireland launches Implementation Group BVD is recognised as an economically important disease at farm level in Ireland and has been identified by industry as a priority for action by Animal Health Ireland (AHI). In November 2010 AHI set up a consultation process to establish views on a co-ordinated, industry-led programme to eradicate BVD from the national herd. This asked a series of questions, including whether respondents supported such a programme, the timescale over which it should run and the need for legislation to deal with the disposal of persistently infected (PI) cattle. This consultation process closed at the end of February and the results have been analysed. Based on the response to the consultation process and extensive discussions with industry stakeholders, AHI now believes there is a mandate to proceed to the planning and implementation stage of an eradication programme. As a result, a BVD Implementation Group has been created with members drawn from across industry and in-
cluding representatives from Veterinary Ireland, IFA, ICMSA, ICOS, Pedigree Cattle Breed Societies, DAFF and ICBF. The group, which met for the first time on 16th May, will continue to meet approximately every three weeks for the remainder of the year to oversee the planning for an eradication programme to begin in 2012. “This is the beginning of a unique and exciting joint initiative by the Irish agri-food sector” said Joe O’Flaherty, CEO, AHI “and a test of the ability of the industry working together to eradicate an economically important disease”. “Although many of the details have yet to be resolved, all parties are agreed that the national identification tag, modified to enable the taking of a tissue sample for BVD testing, will play a key role in the programme. No matter what shape the programme takes, however, it can only be successful if it has the support and engagement of all stakeholders” concluded Mr O’Flaherty.
GRAZING stocking rates are low on beef farms nationally — about 85,000 farms are stocked <100kg organic N/ha. Therefore, low nitrogen grazing regimes are in use. A recent survey suggests that beef farmers tend to take one large silage cut. This opens up the remainder of the farm for grazing after the silage has been cut. There is major potential to increase the contribution of clover to productivity on beef farms. If possible, beef farms should try to incorporate clover into the grazing swards by either over-sowing or through their reseeding policy. With clover, split nitrogen applications in March and April are sufficient to meet the total N requirements for the year. Clover swards need to be grazed out well to open the swards for clover to establish. In autumn, the grazing rotation should be 40 days on clover swards. Some farmers in mid season think their swards contain considerable levels of clover. However, in many cases this is wild clover, which is easily recognizable as it tends to grow in circles. This clover is not as productive as new clover varieties, is variable in its growth capacity and cannot be depended upon. NITROGEN FOR SILAGE Silage fields should also get slurry where it is available at closing up in the spring. Applying 2,500 gallons per acre can reduce the requirement of bagged N to less than 70 units per acre on older permanent pasture destined for first-cut silage. On fields that have been reseeded in the last four years it may be worth applying a further 20 units of bagged N per acre as these swards have the potential to produce higher quantities of grass with adequate N. PHOSPHORUS AND POTASSIUM Each crop of silage that is cut will remove Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) from the soil. Continuous cutting in the same area in the absence of spreading slurry or application of P & K fertilizer will lead to a reduction in soil fertility. The optimum approach is to take regular soil samples (at least once every five years) to check the soil status of particular fields. If P & K levels are low, these should be targeted with slurry or compound fertilizers. If the P &WANTED K status is high, Nitrogen fertilizer FOR EXPORT will generally suffice on silage and grazing ground with slurry application targeted for silage areas. Continental bulls

Kia-Nissan Partnership
Fisher
THE Letterkenny and Malin-based car dealers Inishowen Motors have announced a new partnership with Nissan Ireland. “Nissan is one of the top 5 brands in the marketplace,” says Seamus McLaughlin, “with Nissan volumes up almost 30% on last year. There is clearly a huge demand for Nissan from consumers but there has been no Nissan dealer in North East Donegal for some time. We wanted to fill the gap, and believe we can provide a better service to buyers in this region now as a result.” Seamus says the partnership will also benefit Nissan, because of the success story that is Inishowen Motors. “When we became dealers for Kia, they had just 2% of the market nationwide but in Donegal, we brought that to 9% with the sales from our Malin and Letterkenny showrooms,” he adds. Inishowen Motors is a family-run business with a strong emphasis on customer service and support. “We have operated from Malin in Inishowen for 2 generations and opened our Letterkenny showroom almost ten years ago, and moved to Drumkeen in 2009. We are now planning to develop another showroom at Drumkeen to meet the demand for our vehicles and parts services.” “We are predicting major public interest in Nissan cars and commercial vehicles as a result of our new partnership with them. For example, the Qashqai is one of the top 8 best selling models in Ireland for 2011, the Juke was crowned Irish Car of the Year for 2011, and the Leaf was recently crowned World Car of the Year Commenting on the new partnership, Gerard A. O’Toole, Executive Chairman of Nissan Ireland says they are “delighted to recruit such an experienced dealership to the Nissan franchise. Inishowen Motors are a high calibre dealership and we look forward to many successful years of business ahead” Nissan Ireland is responsible for distributing the full range of Nissan new cars, commercial vehicles / vans and forklifts within the Republic of Ireland. Established in 1977, Nissan has been at the forefront of the Irish motor industry ever since. This is achieved by a potent combination of aggressive sales and marketing strategies coupled with an extremely strong customer service philosophy, says Mr O’Toole. Seamus McLaughlin is also keen to point out that Inishowen Motors will be doing more than offering Nissan car and commercial vehicle sales. “We will also offer parts, service and warranty to existing Nissan owners in this region.” Contact Emmet Eves on 9134567 for information on Nissan parts, service and warranty, or book a service on www.inishowenmotors.ie .
Works Ford for Topaz Donegal International Rally. Mikko Hirvonen Monte Carlo Winning Car is entered. Rory Kennedy
IRISH rallying sat bolt upright this evening at the news that M-Sport, the official works rally team for the Ford Motor Company, will appear at Ireland’s premier tarmac rally. And two very famous Irish names will be in it. Fermanagh’s Alistair Fisher, with Donegal’s Rory Kennedy co-driving, will pilot the Works Ford Fiesta Super 2000 car that won the Monte Carlo Rally in 2010 in the hands of works driver Mikko Hirvonen. Kennedy was co-driver for the late Bertie Fisher, Alistair’s uncle, the most successful crew in Irish tarmac history. “Alistair has been working on this for some time and we are delighted that M-Sport will once again appear in Donegal. The car is fantastic and we can’t wait to get
it out onto Donegal’s classic stages. Alistair is running at the front in the FIA’s new WRC Academy, with a different spec Ford Fiesta and led the field on the WRC round in Portugal last month with it. He has the pace and will be pushing hard.” A spokesman for Donegal Motor Club said: “ This is fantastic news for the event and for Irish rallying. It will be great to have the M-Sport team in Donegal again. We suspect a few of the top seeds will be sleeping a lot less easily from now until the rally starts on June 17th next.” Rally programmes will be published shortly and may be pre-ordered on the Topaz Donegal International Rally website at: donegalrally.ie
“Epic Adventure” ahead on Topaz Donegal International Rally At the launch (left to right) are CEO of Topaz Ireland, Eddie O’Brien Irish Tarmac Champion Rally Champion Gareth MacHale. DETAILS are now being released of the scale of the 40th Running of the Topaz Donegal International Rally, which takes place from June 17 – 19th next. It appears competitors are in for an epic weekend of motorsport on Donegal’s famous rally stages. Clerk of the Course Danny Gormley commented: “We decided to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the rally by recreating the challenge of the first one. That had 38 stages, a huge stage mileage and little service time. While we can’t stretch to that, there are big changes for 2011, brand new stages, and a competitive distance of almost 320 Kms. There will be a sense of adventure and we might even see the return of some tactical driving. Mind you, going on past experience, the chances of that are slim!”
“I can report that the entry list is virtually full at the moment, but going by the dropout rate in previous years we expect to fit a few more in. Anyone still thinking of an entry should contact us at donegalrally.ie as soon as possible. Our accomodation officer holds special rates, reserved for competitors beside Rally HQ, and is also on the website.” “As ever, we are looking forward to a safe weekend for our competitors and also for all the visitors to the County. This year in particular we are asking rally supporters attending the Topaz Donegal International Rally to join with Donegal Motor Club’s campaign, in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority, to “Keep the Race in its Place”. “The Rally will start from An Grianan Theatre on Friday morning 17th June, with the cars
on view at Parc Ferme each evening at Letterkenny Institute of Technology. It will finish at its ‘ancestral home’ at Rally HQ, the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny, on Sunday evening. I wish to thank all of these flagship Letterkenny institutions for their continuing support.” “Our 40th anniversary rally programme, with full details of the entry, route maps and feature articles will be available for sale in the week starting 6th June and a list of the outlets will be posted on the website.” “More information will follow shortly. I can assure both competitors and the 60,000 spectators expected to attend, that we are working hard to ensure the Topaz Donegal International Rally 2011 echoes the sense of adventure and fun started by the first rally back in 1971.”

Shay misses italy game to sort out club future SHAY GIVEN could have a new club within days after being granted permission to miss Ireland’s friendly with Italy in Liege. The Lifford man had a superb game against Macedonia, pulling off several world class saves to help the national side to a Euro qualifier 2-0 win on Saturday night. And that was despite being targeted by soccer hooligans who shone a laser pen into his face in the first minute of the match. While Shay went on to have a great game, his Man City teammate Joe Hart was having a nightmare at Wembley as England struggled to a 2-2 draw with Switzerland. Ireland assistant boss Marco Tardelli confirmed Given’s absence from the match in Belgium. “I think Shay Given and Kevin Kilbane have a problem,” said Tardelli. Now it’s understood Shay will have talks with Manchester City about his future. He still has two years left on his contract with the club and City are keen to keep the 35-year-old as cover for Joe Hart. But the County Donegal man craves first team football and he has been linked with a number of clubs including Celtic, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and Leicester City.
Sources have not ruled out a loan move to Championship side Leicester with a 24-hour recall clause. Given would also love a return to Celtic. The situation is being monitored by Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool where Pepe Reina may well decide to leave Anfield this summer. If he does, it is almost certain that Given will go to Liverpool. Meanwhile former Ireland star Matt Holland was full of praise for Shay after the weekend win. “I thought Shay was superb,” said Holland. “He has had a frustrating season at Manchester City but twice he was called into action in Skopje and he made two wonderful saves. “His save in the 13th minute from Goran Pandev illustrated all that is wonderful about Given. “When you see Brad Friedel at 40 getting a two-year contract with Spurs you do really scratch your head at how Shay, five years younger, is still sitting on the bench at Manchester City.”

Harps robbed by Longford in fai Cup Finn Harps
0
Longford Town
1
MARK Salmon fired home the only goal of the game eight minutes from time to move Longford Town into the fourth round draw for the FAI Cup after they got the better of Finn Harps at a soaking Finn Park tonight. Against the run of play with Harps looking the most likely to make a breakthrough, Longford were awarded a controversial penalty and despite Ciaran Gallagher getting down well to save Salmon’s spotkick the Town midfielder was quickest to react and he forced home the rebound. Up to that, Harps had shaded a poor game, in front of one of the poorest crowds of the season at Finn Park. The hosts had a number of good chances in the second-half, after first had come and gone without anything notable in the way of
Since the 1980’s football has seen an unprecedented commercial growth that has made it the most watched and attended sport on the planet. From the havelas in Rio to the shantytowns in Johannesburg to the high rises of Tokyo football has made inroads and with that level of exposure comes a great deal of wealth. With the increasing wealth comes increasing power and ultimately greed and corruption will follow, and that has never been more evident than in the unopposed appointment of Sepp Blatter as the head of FIFA for another five years. Blatter took the reins when the growth of the game became truly global and the sums of money became astronomical. In his position he had an opportunity to make football a uniting force and a positive movement that would develop the game and the social circumstances of those involved in it. Patrick Viera and Craig Bellamy have both been responsible for setting up football acadamies in Africa designed to help the more impoverished in that region. Both institutions have had remarkable success, not in uncovering talented footballers, but in creating a better quality of life for those involved. This should be the remit of FIFA. But under Blatter’s guidance FIFA has been responsible for creating a corporate monster that puts financial gain in front of everything, including the health of the game. This was never more evident than in the granting of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, a wholly inappropriate venue for the games showpiece. The first point is that Qatar has one of the most fundamentally oppressive regimes in the Middle East with a brutal human rights record. This is also a country with no footballing background and no infrastructure
goalmouth action. But the boys in blue were made pay for their lack of clinical finishing in the final third when Lee Roche was awarded a soft penalty on 82 minutes. Salmon might have been denied at the first attempt by Gallagher, but he wouldn’t be thwarted a second time as he prodded home the match-winner to sink Harps, who were incensed at the penalty award as they trooped off at the conclusion. to host such an enormous tournament. It has a climate of 50 degrees constantly throughout the summer when the World Cup traditionally takes place. There is talk that in order to accommodate this that the World Cup will be moved to January! The rationale for the decision to select Qatar was that it was designed to spread the game to areas where there has been little exposure. Fair enough, but Qatar has a population of one and a half million! How many new fans do they hope to get out of this location? Is it a coincidence that Qatar is also one of the richest nations in the world? As Mrs Merton asked Debbie Mc Gee ‘What was it that attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?’. It seems that as long as there is enough money involved then Blatter and his cronies will do untold damage to the game in order to please the highest bidder. Anybody up for a good public stoning? AWARDS FOR 2010/2011 A football season is never complete without it’s end of season awards and this is the list of ‘It’s not a matter of life and death’s....’ winners for this year. the FA, the PFA, the LMFA, the BBC, Sky and all the referees. International Fair Play Award: Jose Mourinho: For reasons above. The Graham Poll Refereeing Decision of the Year: Massimo Bussaca: Sends Robin Van Persie off for not hearing his whistle in the Nou Camp, a stadium where the 90,000 home fans whistle every touch of the ball the opposition make. Could only be a Swiss national. The Wayne Rooney Humility Award: Mario Ballotelli: When accepting the European Young Player of the Year was asked what he thought of the runner up Jack Wilshere he humbly replied: ‘What’s his name? Will something? I don’t know him. I’ll look out for him the next time we play Arsenal. Maybe I’ll show him the trophy and remind him that I am the one who won it’. The Djimi Traore Ineptitude Award: The Arsenal back four: Once heralded in the film ‘The Full Monty’ for their togetherness, now doing a competent impression of The Keystone Cops’. The Graham Taylor Quote of The Year Award: Ian Holloway (who else?) on goaline technology: “Why haven’t they got cameras? The officials can speak to each other easily enough now. Why aren’t we using laptops that are linked up and can give a decision in five seconds? A chimpanzee could do it – with not much training. We might as well go back to being cavemen, grab our girl by the hair, drag her into the cave whether she wants to come in or not because we may as well live in that age. We’ve come forward, haven’t we?”

Excellent Turnout for Donegal Primary Schools THE statistics will indicate some 90 schools participated, some 1100 children in the 41st annual primary school athletics challenge at Finn Valleys track June 1st. That was only one aspect of what was a most enjoyable competitive event and as we are continually reminded year on year if you leave for home having won a medal here you certainly have done really well . There are the talented children but there is also the opportunity for so many to come along and try the varied disciplines that athletics offers. A big thank you to the teachers that engage and certainly one can only work towards a situation where indeed all schools will accept the inviation to participate. Finn Valley AC who lead out this programme had 50 officials
on duty they did an excellent job and no doubt they will continue to work to improve. Many areas had held regional qualifiers and its interesting to record that Sean Mc Ginley, Annagry has organised the Rosses area since 1977 bringing winners forward to this finals stage clearly the community owes a debt of gratitude to teachers of this alike. Additionally interesting to note Annagry retained the medium best school award, Lifford took the small school accolade while for the first time in their history Scoil Colmcille,Letterkenny narrowly won the large school ranking from Iosagain, Buncrana. To sum up a great day out for the hundreds of supporters and a good educational opportunity for the children.

Kelly and Speight strike for gold in Schools THE Irish schools has forever been a class athletics meeting and it continues to hold the stage for all the right reasons . Tullamore Saturday was always going to prove a serious test and there emerged certainly two really positive returns with the possibility of 4 others if the detail to training ,lifestyle and attitude continues to be there . First up was James Speight a student at Erne Integrated, his last schools race in this sphere of life, the steeple and he nailed it 6.14.52 to win . He had worked hard, deserved the honours and grabbed the opportunity . In the same event Mark Bonner 6th from St Columbas 6-35-10 certainly has potential so needs to think about moving to the next level which he undoubtably can. John Kelly, Royal and Prior had a good javelin outing early in the day 47m plus just short of a medal but a significant pb then his event the shot he led after 3 Q rounds was caught in the 6th round so what was it to be respond or take a beating . The answer get it together push to the limit and see where it was going . It went to 14.64m game over a winning throw which considering the background the pressure etc is positive. This is with the 5kg ball and getting into the right competition environment will be important hence the schools international per the Tailteann Games and the AAA champs to nail a 15m mark. Competition and his response to same will hit that . Blaithnaid Pattton and her Columbas schoolmate Caoimhe Mc Menamin were on early morning a bronze for Blaithnaid in
high jump 1.55 needs 1.60 to nail an international spot at a minimum and junior girls long jump 5th for Caoimhe 4.81. Sean Woods Royal and Prior recorded a pb 51.56 inter boys 400m thats getting close to an impact result needs a sub 51 and he may be in line for schools
selection . Tuesday night Letterkenny the venue its the 14-18 county champs. The weekend saw one other notable mark that of Noel Collins 1.50.9 for 800m IMC guest event in Tullamore a club record and consid-
ering he got boxed in finished 2nd that under 23 1500 is within his grasp in coming weeks . Congrats to Ruairi Finnegan ,St Eunans and Abbey V S junior girls relay both breaking records in respective events.

Congratulations to Andrew Wallace and the Donegal Senior hurling team on their All Ireland win in Croke Park on Saturday. Well done to U/16 hurler Jamie McLaughlin who was placed 3rd in the Ulster Puc Fada in Belfast on Saturday and to Steven Burns who competed in the senior section. Both did club and county proud. The U/14 hurlers played Burt in the League B Final in Buncrana on Thursday evening. Played in ideal conditions this young Carn team gave a gallant display against old rivals Burt who had defeated them earlier in the season. In the second half Carn drew level six points each but could not take the lead while they were dominating for this period and once Burt broke down the field they drew the frees resulting in victory for Burt in the last quarter. Ladies Football: The U12 girls travelled to Buncrana this week for the blitz. We only had ten players this week but they enjoyed the day out and got lots of football. They played four twenty minute games and played very well together, they scored plenty and conceded very few scores. This may be a small group but there’s a lot of talent and the girls are a pleasure to manage, there’s no moaning about positions and they all work very hard for each other. There is no blitz next weekend but the training will take place as normal on Saturday morning 11 - 12:30, the following week (June 18th) Carndonagh will be hosting the u12 girls blitz and we would like lots of support from all the parents. The event was sponsored by Supervalu, Buncrana
Malachy McCann, Paul McGonigle, Anthony Tohill & Gary Duffy.
who have been great supporters of these fun blitz’s, thanks to all the parents who provided refreshments as well, thanks to all the teams who traveled and for their co-operation and patience in what proved to be a congested Scarvey due to other matches taking place at the same time. On Tuesday night the girl’s under 14 team hosted Moville, who are probably the best team in Inis Eoghain indeed the County at this age group. The first half was very competitive and Buncrana competed well against this strong Moville side. Through some very effective tackling and good marking Moville only managed to score 1g 3p and if Buncrana had taken their scoring opportunities of which there were plenty they would have ended this half on top. In the second half the experienced Moville side dominated the play and showed why they are one of the top teams in the competition. Despite their dominance the Buncrana girls never gave up and chased the game right till the final whistle. It was a good team performance from the girls and the girls introduced as subs also made a valuable contribution to the game. Hopefully our youthful team will learn a lot from this game and use it to their advantage over the remaining games. Our u14 hurler’s added the Donegal League title at O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny on Thursday night. They were up against old rivals Aodh Ruadh. The boys knew they would be up against strong physical Ballyshannon side, but our lads were more than a match for them, the boys were slow to start and went in at halftime 3 points to 2 down. The dressing room was not a place for the faint hearted and all were asked for improvement and to a man they did. The second half was a different story and we began to pull away the second half was capped with a fine goal from youngest player on the pitch Aaron Craig, no doubt it will be the first of many. The backs all stood up when it mattered, PJ McCarron, Aedan Stokes, Sam Doherty and James Doherty all impressed, the midfield duo of Paul Nelson and Darren Doherty were the driving force in the second half revival, the lively Dylan Duffy chipped in with 1:2 and will be happy with his hours work other scor-
ers incuded Sam Doherty 1:1,Aaron Craig 1:0,Tom Clare 0.2, Craig Doherty 0.1. This result helps to build for the upcoming trip to Galway and next up is an away trip to Ballybofey to play McCumhaill’s on Thursday evening in the Championship semi final. *All mangers are asked to check with Martin Mullan on 087 246 8108 about the availability of both pitches as there has been a number of fixture clashes lately. * Congratulations to John Doherty and his new bride Tina Patton who were married last Friday. John spoke passionately of his affection for and affiliation to Buncrana GAA Club. He went on to thank the club for the guidance given to him over the years and the personal development it provided and John is someone the club is rightly proud of. PJ McCarron deverves great praise for the excellent organisation and success of the Buncrana GAA Club Annual Golf Classic hosted by the superb North West Golf Club in Lisfannon all day Saturday. Former player and current NWGC Captain Mr. Eugene O’Connell spoke sincerely about his admiration for the Club and comment on how it was the single most important organisation in every town and village for the social development and physical well-being of our youth. The club wishes to thank Captain Eugene and all staff and members who ensured the day was a great success. A number of legends of the GAA took part including Anthony Tohill of Derry and Monaghan’s Noody Hughes and indeed a big thanks to all members and competitors who played on the day. Buncrana GAA Club wishes to thank all sponsors, players, staff and officers of the NWGC, Cathy for keeping PJ right, Gary Duffy for keeping time, the spotters and Demi and girls that sold raffle tickets, Mickey and Charlie for the entertainment and Cindy for the photography. The day would not have been what it was without the one and only PJ McCarron. His workrate and enthusiasm to ensure success was rewarded with a dry day and well done to him and all who assisted. Best of luck to senior player Ryan Bradley as Donegal aim for a semi-final berth against
Tyrone in Breffni Park this Sunday as they take on Cavan. A date for this year’s club barbecue has been set at Saturday the 13th August, more details will become available nearer the time. If you are clearing out your wardrobe or just looking to get rid of old clothes you can help raise much needed funds for the club by putting them into the clothes bank at the Scarvey at any time. The results of the club’s lotto draw which, took place on Tuesday 31st May in O’Flaherty’s Bar on the Main Street, are as follows. The winning numbers drawn for the €10,000 jackpot were 01-09-18-24. COMÓRTAS PEILE NA GAELTACHTA 2011
Ryan back in training, hoping to play against Cavan BUNCRANA’S Ryan Bradley will train again with the Donegal senior team for the second time in three days today – showing he has shaken off a virus and may be fit to play against Cavan in the Ulster Senior Championship on Sunday. The quarter final clash at Breffni Park will be much the better with Bradley fit. He was man of the match in the preliminary clash with Antrim at Ballybofey last month. Bradley sat out last week’s friendly challenge encounter with Mayo which Donegal won by a couple of points. The good news for Donegal is that Leo McLoone will also train today after recovering from a broken ankle sustained playing for club side Naomh Conaill in March. And captain Michael Murphy has fully recovered from a leg injury which saw him treated at Letterkenny General Hospital. Murphy, Rory Kavanagh, Neil Gallagher and Mark McHugh all trained at the weekend and will do so again today as manager Jim McGuinness takes advantage of the Bank Holiday to pull his squad together. And don’t rule out the possibility of teenage Kilcar star Patrick McBrearty playing some role against Cavan after playing superbly against Mayo at corner forward.
Comórtas peile na Gaeltachta 2011 i gCloich Cheann Fhaola: Naomh Mhuire from Annagry were crowned Junior Champions and CLG Chlioch Cheann Fhaola Senior Champions after a superb weekend tournament. Also the Bridin Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh from Gaoth Dobhair won the Cailin Caelach.

Donegal win Lory Meagher Cup Donegal scored a breathtaking lastminute goal to ensure they are crowned 2011 holders of Lory Meagher Cup CIARAN Mathewson was the hero of the day when he struck his second goal right at the death to spoil the Tyrone party, when it was beginning to look like their narrow two point lead was going to bring them over the line at Croke Park. Tyrone got off the ground running early on in the match. Their tight defence were managing to handle whatever Donegal could throw at them and key players such as Rory O’Neill and Aidan Kelly were kicking over valuable points. Donegal’s star man, the brilliant Mathewson, gave his team a lifeline when he struck an unstoppable shot into the Tyrone net approaching twenty minutes. He then knocked over a couple of points before a Niall Campbell free in leveled the game on 33 minutes. Campbell, who had been so impressive in their semi-final victory scoring eleven points, successfully added two more points to his tally to carve out a two point advantage for his team going in at the break, Donegal 1-07 0-8 Tyrone. Tyrone came out strongly at the start of the second half, chalking up a couple of decent scores of their own. They exerted their
dominance around the middle of the field and through Kelly and Grogan notching up six points between them Tyrone led by two with the end of the match nearing. Enda McDermott sent in a long delivery to the Tyrone penalty area as time was running out. Mathewson received the sliothar, carried for a few yards to create some space, and smashed the ball past Devlin in the Tyrone goal to spark great celebrations amongst the Donegal squad and fans. Letterkenny athlete wins Flora mini marathon DONEGAL athlete Caitriona Jennings has won the Flora Women’s MiniMarathon.
THE 30-year-old Letterkenny native crossed the line in an unofficial time of 35m29s. She was sixth in the race in 2010. Over 40,000 women took part in the race, with many running and walking the 10km south Dublin course for charitable causes. Said Catriona: “The conditions were perfect – it was a bit windy on the way out for the first 5km but that kind of kept the pace fairly even. “I felt really comfortable, I didn’t want to think too far ahead but the girls were just dropping off and I thought the pace was fine so I stuck with it. “I run with Sportsworld in Terenure. The training for this has been up and down because I was injured. I had an Achilles problem in January which kind of lingered until around April so I didn’t think I’d have enough training coming back in here. “This is probably my first big win – I was sixth here last year and fifth the previous year so I really wanted to make amends and I’m delighted it’s paid off. Third time lucky. It’s not my fastest time. I think it was just outside my personal best, but not too far.”
