Performing for the very first time in Holland

The musical classic CATS by Andrew Lloyd Webber is coming to the Netherlands for a limited season of 7 weeks only. The European opening night will be in the RAI Theatre in Amsterdam on the 20th December followed by a 3 week stay until 13th January. There will be extra shows during both days of Christmas. The story The timeless story of CATS moves both young and old: it takes place on the most special evening of the year when the Jellicle tribe of cats celebrate their big ball. Tonight Old Deuteronomy will chose one of the cats to be reborn into a new cat life. Grizabella, the glamour cat who has travelled the world for several years, has come home this very evening. She would love to get in touch with her family again, but she is disappointed to find out that they are not interested in seeing her. The cats’ party is cruelly interrupted when the evil Macavity kidnaps Old Deuteronomy. The cats join forces to free their leader and the wise old tomcat chooses Grizabella to be reborn. History CATS premiered in London’s West End in May 1981. It was the start of a huge hit that still hasn’t ended over 35 years later. More than 81 million people have now seen a production of CATS in more than 350 cities in 20 countries. After its premiere,

CATS ran uninterrupted for 21 years in London with about 9000 performances. For years it was the longest running musical in the West End and the musical with the most performances on Broadway and the longest touring history in the United States. In 1983 the Broadway production won no less than 7 Tony Awards, the US theatre industry’s equivalent to the Oscars, including the award for best musical. The famous hit song ‘Memory’ has now been covered by more than 150 artists, including Céline Dion and Barbra Streisand. A brand new world tour of English performances was launched in February 2016. The tour will visit the Netherlands and it will be the first time CATS is performed in English in Holland.

An artist who always presents at the highest level. Nonchalant, skilled and with a wink, the duo Flip’n Fly knows how to make the PALAZZO audience’s hearts beat faster. They perform on the teeterboard, show acrobatic figures and breath-taking tricks - without a safety net. Sociologist Peter Shub is an award-winning clown, comedian, author and director. From funny pantomime acts to black humour, slapstick and crazy interpretations of poems or songs, this American really can make people laugh! Suzanne and Peter of ‘Up and Over it’ both started their career at Riverdance and present a unique comic percussion act in which they dissect the folk and re-shape it in a surprising way. Sarah Tessier and Guilheme Cauchois became known when touring with Cirque du Soleil’s show ‘Totem’. Their fascinating, passionate trapeze act tells the story of the bittersweet farewell between two lovers. For many, the absolute highlight of the evening. The Russian Nata Galkina poetically shows her ‘feet’ skills by cleverly balancing the rings and hoops during her poetic foot-juggling act. And all of that is supported with live music by the PALAZZO band.

City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets)) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. JORDAAN AUTHENTIC WORKING CLASS AREA You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).

PUBS/BARS AND SHOPS When you walk from the Noorderkerk (Northern church) to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recognizable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower – you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

ANNE FRANK HOUSE Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very impressive.

THE REAL PUB LIFE ‘Gezellig’. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly – applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music. ■

Tip s Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!

THE NINE STREETS

Not far behind Dam Square, between the wellknown ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. PLEASANT, UNIQUE AND BOLD In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.

VINTAGE, CHIC, SECOND-HAND AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.

MUSEUM QUARTER

See the masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with your own eyes.

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? RIJKSMUSEUM (NATIONAL MUSEUM) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum is completely open again.

VAN GOGH MUSEUM When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.

STEDELIJK MUSEUM (MUNICIPAL MUSEUM) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.

CONCERTGEBOUW (CONCERT HALL) In 1888 the first concert took place in the famous Concert Hall. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw was celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw is central.

Visit the oldest streets of Amsterdam.

Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. Close to the Central Station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, cafés and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!

RED LIGHT DISTRICT The Red Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully, are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.

The Oude Kerksplein is special place in the heart of the Red Light district. The 14th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the square in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here. NIEUWENDIJK A TASTE OF OLD AND NEW The historic, atmospheric and cozy Nieuwendijk is an important link between Amsterdam Central and Dam Square, with various museums in the area, The Royal Palace and you can stroll around, endless shopping and good food in the many restaurants. You will find big chains such as Hema, Bershka, H & M, Zara, Primark and Only, but also authentic shops. Jeans specialist The Werkmanspaleis is established there since 1950, Slijterij De Vreng since 1710 and Tip de Bruin since 1953.

KALVERSTRAAT AND SPUI Everyone in the Netherlands knows this shopping street, Kalverstraat. It is about one kilometre long and has 15 side streets and alleys. Halfway through Kalverstraat you can walk onto one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful small squares: Spui. You will find a second-hand book market here every Friday. On Saturdays there is an art market.

ROYAL PALACE AND NATIONAL MONUMENT

Tip s • The Bijenkorf, literally a ‘beehive’, on Dam Square is already an attraction in itself. Here you can find about all imaginable clothing and other articles of all conceivable brands; • Are you standing on Spui? Walk into Voetboogstraat and join the queue for Vleminckx. This chip shop owner does not have a first-rate reputation for nothing; • Don’t pass Warmoesstraat and admire creative rubber in the world’s first condom emporium the Condomerie and have the best chocolate drink in Metropolitan; • You will find Dutch and international celebrities at Madame Tussauds, the waxworks museum on Dam Square.

For those who don’t just want to pass Dam Square: the Palace on Dam Square is open for visitors a large part of the year. A major part of the art collection of the Oranje-Nassau royal family can be seen in the rooms. The National Monument opposite the Palace is the most important monument in the Netherlands in commemoration of World War II.

ROKIN On Rokin, which runs parallel to Kalverstraat, you will find specialist shops, among which Gassan Diamonds and Tobacco shop Hajenius. This shop has been purveyor of tobacco to many European Royal households since 1826 already.

AMSTERDAM MUSEUM, BEGIJNHOF Just behind the bustling Kalverstraat you will find the Museum that specialises in the history of Amsterdam (entrances: Kalverstraat 92 and Sint Luciënsteeg 27). The Begijnhof (Beguinage, entrance at Spui) is an old court of almshouses with 49 houses dating from different time periods. ■

and his Contemporary City Impressions

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

KIOSK ON MUSEUMPLEIN Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print tshirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERY BUDGET Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein (Rembrandt Square). All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life. REGULIERSDWARSSTRAAT: GAY AND TRENDY A pub-crawl from Rembrandtplein will certainly also take you to Reguliersdwarsstraat. Here you will find the city’s most trendy gay entertainment places. The biggest and most famous of these are in the western part of the street, at the side of Koningsplein (King Square). Every café, every bar and every club has its own ambiance. Thorbeckeplein (Thorbecke Square) which is at a right angle to Rembrandtplein is teeming with restaurants and cafés too.

TUSCHINSKI CINEMA Within one hundred metres of Rembrandtplein, in Reguliersbreestraat, you will find the most beautiful cinema of the Netherlands since 1921: Tuschinski.

HEINEKEN BREWERY For everyone who likes to drink beer, a visit to the Heineken Brewery really is a must. In the former brewery at Stadhouderskade, which is a fifteen minute walk from Rembrandtplein, you will make an interactive trip through the world of Heineken with the Heineken Experience.

SHOPPING IN THE UTRECHTSESTRAAT When you go to the Heineken Brewery from Rembrandtplein you can walk there via Reguliersgracht, but you can also take Utrechtsestraat (Utrecht Street). The specialist shops for clothing, books, design furniture and music will certainly make the small detour worth your while. The Utrechtsestraat is typically one of those Amsterdam streets with tasteful, unique and quirky shops. ■

THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java Island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on Sporenbrug on Borneo Island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.

GOING OUT AND MUSIC The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bimhuis (Bim house), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building, is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the pont (ferry) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: The Netherlands EYE Film Institute. In summer it buzzes with all sorts of outdoor activities and festivals. It’s winter now and although it can very cold, there is still much to discover. The many museums Amsterdam has to offer brings top-level exhibitions this season and the shopping streets with their new collections are always a joy. We have Wereld Kerstcircus, CATS the Musical and Palazzo has returned. The theatres and concert halls fire on all cylinders now, with beautiful operas, musicals and dance shows. The many museums of Amsterdam bring top-level exhibitions during the Autumn. Visit the masterpieces like Rembrandt’ s Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum. GAUDÍ AND THE AMSTERDAMSE SCHOOL MUSEUM HET SCHIP AMSTERDAM-WEST OOSTZAANSTRAAT 45, 1013 WG AMSTERDAM HETSCHIP.NL TILL 1 APRIL Museum Het Schip in Amsterdam is delighted to present the exhibition Gaudí and the Amsterdam School from 2 October 2018 to 1 April 2019. With beautiful, imaginative objects designed by the Catalan architect and models of his most famous buildings, like Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Família, the exhibition will highlight the many similarities between Gaudí and the Amsterdam School.

CONNECTING TIME MOCO MUSEUM HONTHORSTSTRAAT 20 MOCOMUSEUM.NL FROM 18 JAN Entering the installation spaces of this exhibition, such as Amethyst Ball Cavern and Eroded Wall Paper Room, feels like stepping into an alternate reality. The artist’s fascination with pop culture objects, sports and the influence of archeology are apparent in these spaces. The show also includes Arsham’s never before presented interactive installation Calcified Room, consisting of a domestic space furnished in mid-century style but created to appear strangely petrified. The calcified room is evocative of a cave interior scaled with minerals, or the city of Pompeii, eternally preserved in ash.

Hermitage Amsterdam’s new exhibition, Classic Beauties, will be opened at June 16. The show tells how artists and tourists flocked to Italy, and more especially Rome, in the second half of the 18th century. From all over Europe they travelled to the Eternal City in search of inspiration and to see the newly excavated classical Greco-Roman sculptures and buildings. Their experiences prompted a new and austere kind of fashionable architecture and, in the visual arts, an unprecedentedly sensual style that sent shock waves through society: a naked, superhuman beauty more daring than anything attempted by the Greeks and Romans. Neoclassicism was born.

This biographical exhibition presents a wealth of objects thousands of years old alongside a number of contemporary artworks. The ancient works of art recount the life of Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha. Born a wealthy prince in the fifth century BC, he chose at the age if 29 to renounce his royal lifestyle and devote himself to spiritual development. The various phases in his life - birth, renunciation, enlightenment, discourses and death - are the wellspring of Buddhism and shape the narrative of this exhibition. .

The musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, but is now a classic in its own right. It premiered in London’s West End in May 1981 and became an unmitigated success, running for 21 years and holding the title of longest-running West End show until 2006. It returned to London for a new run in 2014, and is coming to Amsterdam this December, undoubtedly to the delight of musical lovers throughout the land.

Dada Masilo, one of the most exciting young choreographers in South Africa, brushes the dust from Swan Lake and adds her own South African roots to it. The result is a respectful, fresh version that raises questions about gender boundaries and homophobia in an AIDS-affected country. Masilo’s revision of Swan Lake was very well received at the International Dance Biennale in Lyon and during the performance at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. The performance was praised for her successful mix of pointes technique and contemporary dance with powerful African roots.

After the death of his wife Marie, Paul struggles to let her go. His best friend Frank tries to cheer him up, but Paul cannot be turned and flees. In Bruges, he meets Mariëtta, a dancer who looks just like his deceased wife. He takes her home, but when Mariëtta sees a picture of Marie, she understands Paul’s infatuation with her and takes of straight away. Alone, Paul surrenders to a series of visions in which Marie and Mariëtta merge into one, before ultimately strangling Mariëtta. The long dream sequence ends when Mariëtta returns to pick up the umbrella she had forgotten. When she leaves and Frank enters, Paul promises his friend that he will start his life anew.

National Tulip Day. Dutch Tulip growers will be creating a gigantic pick-your-own tulip garden on Dam Square in Amsterdam with some 200,000 tulips in various colours. The theme of National Tulip Day 2019 is Flowerpower. The theme is reflected in the design of the pick-your-own garden, amongst other things. The pick-your-own tulip garden will be opened to the public at 1 p.m. The garden is expected to be empty by about 4 p.m.

the Dutch Golden Age 2019 Rembrandt van Rijn is one of Hollandís most beloved artists, a prolific and innovative master painter, printmaker and draughtsman. Generally considered as one of the worldís great artists, Rembrandt was working at a time of significant wealth and wisdom in the 17th century, an era known as the Dutch Golden Age. In 2019, it will be 350 years since he died and his life and heritage will be celebrated with exhibitions throughout Holland, from Middelburg to Leeuwarden. REMBRANDTS MASTERFUL TOUCH IN THE SPOTLIGHT Born in Leiden in 1606, Rembrandt spent his formative years training in the art of painting. In 1624 he set up his own studio before moving to Amsterdam in 1631, a period covered in the ëYoung Rembrandtí exhibition at Leidenís Museum de Lakenhal. What set Rembrandt apart was his wide range of subject matter, including portraits and self-portraits, landscapes, allegorical and historical scenes, biblical and mythological themes, and animal studies. Though influenced by the work of the Italian masters, Rembrandt never left the then Dutch Republic, which at the time was flush with wealth and highly acclaimed for its advances in trade, science, the military and art, particularly painting. Today, visitors from around the world flock to museums in Holland to experience his most famous works in person. NAVIGATE THE DUTCH GOLDEN AGE AND DISCOVER A SEAFARING NATION Blossoming trade in Europe and afar, scientific developments that shaped the world, a military with might and a string of achievements in the arts, the Dutch Republic was a force to be reckoned with. Its significant maritime and economic power, and contribution to the arts in the period spanning the 17th century is the focus of a yearlong celebration in the major Dutch cities of the Golden Age throughout 2019. So grab this chance to explore the lasting legacy this flourishing period has had on Holland. VISIT EYE-OPENING EXHIBITIONS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH With a special focus on Rembrandt 350 years after his death, exhibitions in Amsterdam, Delft, Dordrecht, Haarlem, Hoorn and Enkhuizen, Leiden, Middelburg and The Hague will present a range of perspectives on this formidable Dutch master, his peers (including Pieter de Hooch

at Museum Prinsenhof in Delft, and Nicolaes Maes at the Mauritshuis), and diverse works from this golden age of wealth and wonder. Think paintings on loan or never shown in the Netherlands, such as items from Jerusalemís Israel Museum at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. This heritage was demolished at the time because of its limited lifespan, or has sunk to the bottom of the sea. In April 1995, the Batavia, which is the most authentic reconstruction of a 17th-century VOC ship ever made, was launched after ten years in the making. The initiator was master shipbuilder Willem Vos. After this reconstruction was complete, a second project was started in the yard to reconstruct ‘De 7 Provinciën’, a 17thcentury battleship with which Michiel de Ruyter fought many sea battles. The construction of the replica of ‘De 7 Provinciën’ is one of the largest and most challenging historical shipbuilding projects in the world. Using vocational reintegration and work experience projects to construct these ships, the shipyard plays an important part in the lives of longterm unemployed people for whom, over time and for various reasons, the distance to the job market has become too great.

HERE ARE SIX OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO AROUND THE AREA KNOWN AS CASTLES & GARDENS! 1) CYCLE ALONG THE RIVER VECHT The winding River Vecht between Amsterdam and Utrecht is a wonderful setting for a cycle route. The bank offers an open view of the imposing castles (such as at Breukelen and Muiden), picturesque villages, ambitious country estates and accompanying tearooms. Rich merchants from the Golden Age once spent their summer months here. The holidaymakers ‘only’ needed five to seven hours to reach their rural residence. Thankfully, it’s much quicker today – many of the best attractions around the Castles & Gardens are an enjoyable bike ride from Amsterdam.

2) GO BOATING Much like in the olden days, travelling on the water is still one of the best ways to explore the countryside, offering splendid vistas whilst being a meditative mode of transport close to nature. For example, you could hire a boat in Uithoorn and explore the Amstel River countryside. Meanwhile by the River Vecht, the charming town of Muiden is a must for boat lovers, with countless ships sailing into and out of the historic harbour.

6) EXPERIENCE THE STAUNCH BEAUTY OF THE FORTIFIED TOWN OF NAARDEN. What is the Gooi & Vecht area’s secret? Why does this area harbour so many fortresses and castles? What was it that needed all this protection? It might be hard to imagine now, but this peaceful part of Holland used to be the ultimate defence line against enemies from the east trying to get to Amsterdam’s riches. That is why the Dutch started building these defences in the Middle Ages. The sturdy Amsterdam Castle (Muiderslot) controled the river Vecht’s estuary, the fortified town of Naarden (shaped in the form of a star) guarded the only piece of dry land between the South Sea (Zuiderzee) and the lakes. Later the fortresses and fortified towns like Weesp, Muiden and Naarden worked together to keep the entire area safe. Nowadays this peaceful and pretty area does not need all these military forces. But the fortresses, castles and fortified towns are still an essential part of the landscape. They are waiting for you to come and explore them! ■

THE MOST REMARKABLE PICTURESQUE FISHING VILLAGE Volendam is the most remarkable picturesque fishing village just some 10-15 miles from Amsterdam. It dates from the era when the, now lake, IJsselmeer still was a part of the North Sea. In Volendam, if you’re lucky, you will see people in traditional costumes. As a result of its insulated location, the village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. HISTORY AND FAME The name Volendam stems from Volent-dam, which means as much as the finishing of a dam. Volendam is located on the site of the former (way back in 1357) harbour of the historic city of Edam. As Edam started a new harbour, the old one formed a new settlement, and got the name Volendam. The population of the town grew only very slowly during those first centuries of its existence. In 1462 it only had 25 inhabitants, whereas today some 19,000. Around 1875, Volendam became known as a town worth visiting by tourists, and was thusly immortalized by writers and artists. Volendam became written about both nationally and internatio-nally, and magazines published photographs of stalwart fishermen by the harbour, of the women in their graceful traditional dress and of children playing in front of picturesque houses. The rich and famous flocked to this humble fishing town, where it seemed as if time had stood still.

Volendam became an artist’s paradise, with people in graceful traditional costumes, the wooden little houses built closely together against, protected from the sea by the sturdy dike; their interiors replete with statuettes of saints and the harbour crowded with hundreds of red-sailed ‘botters’ (fishing boats). Some elements of this are now of the past (the herring fishery was finished when the sea was closed off), but if you are curious about how the Volendam costume was worn and what the interiors of the houses looked like, do visit the Volendammer Museum to experience a little of the Volendam of yesteryear.

THE COSTUME The costumes of Volendam are worldrenowned. Around the entire world you can see portraits of people who have had themselves photographed in Volendam costume at the time of their visit to the place. The most famous part of the Dutch costume is of course the wooden shoes or “clogs”. The clog has gone a little bit out of fashion the-

se days, but you can still occasionally see people walk around on them.

WATERLAND Monnickendam, Marken, Broek in Waterland, Ilpendam, Katwoude, Overleek, Purmer, Watergang, Uitdam and Zuiderwoude are known as Waterland. Each one of these places has its own charm and a cultural and historical background that makes a visit very worth while. The decor consists of open grass polders, peat rivers and ribbon development villages with colourful woorden houses and traditional Dutch farmhouses built in the shape of pyramids. All places in Waterland are in easy reach from Amsterdam, whether by car, public transport. ■

With its traditional green painted houses, warehouses and windmills the Zaanse Schans gives the feeling of having stepped back into the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration.

STEP BACK INTO THE SEVENTEENTH OR EIGHTEENTH CENTURY The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage. you can press on various displays and try and package as many biscuits and sweets as you can in a computer game. The smaller, specialized museums such as the first Albert Heijn Grocery shop, the Bakery Museum ‘In de Gecroonde Duyvekater’ where traditional delicacies are sold, Museum of the Dutch Clock, are all situated at the Zaanse Schans in listed buildings bringing the history of this oldest industrial area to life.

There is no entrance fee for visiting the traditional Dutch workshops such as the Wooden Shoe Workshop where you can see the clog makers at work and the Cheese Farm where you can learn about the different stages of Cheese making. In craftcenter De Saense Lelie you will find an artist specialised in Delft Blue decoration, a diamond cutter and goldsmiths. But that is not all, as other traditional crafts are also represented here, including a local oil painter and popular Assendelft art. For a workshop making your own souvenir you can visit, Orse ket aan ‘t Glop. New! is “ Soap Works Zaanse Schans” on the Zeilenmakerspad number 4, next to the bakery museum. Zaandam has had a wonderful history of soapmaking, like the soap factory “The Eagle”

The most enjoyable way to see the surrounding area is from the water. From April to October river cruises are available along the river Zaan not only for a splendid view of the Zaanse Schans, but also for a more detailed examination of the traditional and picturesque Dutch houses, windmills and other interesting sights along the way.

WINDMILLS A visit to a working industrial windmill is a unique experience. Paint mill De Kat and oil mill De Zoeker are open daily from March to October. From November to February most of the windmills at the Zaanse Schans only open at the weekends. The Jonge Schaap is open all year.

MUSEUMS The Zaanse Schans has a number of fascinating museums to tempt the visitor. The Zaans Museum and the Verkade Pavilion make the tastiest museum in the Netherlands. The collection is extremely wide-ranging and is presented in a contemporary way. It features utensils, clothing and paintings as well as factory equipment from the food industry, and as you make your way through the museum

Let’s be honest Prostitution has enjoyed a long tradition of tolerance in Amsterdam. Safety is key here. In addition to preventing forced prostitution, the aim is an open and honest approach. Sex-workers here have their own union, plenty of police protection, an information centre (for visitors as well), frequent monitoring and testing and professional standards. The Amsterdam city centre has a romantic image. But behind the exciting, unconventional, ‘anything goes’ image of the city centre lurks a different reality -- a reality that sometimes consist of sex trafficking, forced prostitution. This is something that the city and the justice department are fighting against.

Changing the heart of Amsterdam New opportunities are setting in place a future for the city centre. The Amsterdam municipal council’s1012 project aims to discourage crime and corruption in the city centre by reducing the types of businesses that are conducive to crime and by permitting prostitution in just two areas. Together with local residents, business proprietors and investors, the municipal council is working to strengthen the area’s unique character and stimulate an economic upgrade.

Visiting the Red Light District The area is bustling with visitors and groups of tourists. It is best to travel in a pair or in a group, as the area also attracts some seedier characters. Grab a map and venture out or if you’re keen to learn more take one of the many specialised tours.

Although there is 24-hour video surveillance in most parts of the district, be aware of pickpockets. They tend to target crowds of distracted tourists, so keep an eye on your belongings and leave your valuables in a safe at the hotel. Many families and people who need to get up for work the next morning live in this area. Respect their neighbourhood, and do not yell or cause disturbances.

There is more to the Wallen The Wallen, also known as the rosse buurt to Amsterdammers and the Red Light District to visitors is actually the oldest part of Amsterdam. The neighbourhood is chock-full of interesting shops, pubs, fantastic restaurants, leaning gabled houses and the city’s most charming canals. Don’t miss the vibrant Nieuwmarkt square, the gothic Oude Kerk or a walk along the centre of Amsterdam’s Chinatown, the Zeedijk (also home to an impressive Buddhist temple).

Architecture and Fashion Another site not to miss in this area is in the Oudezijds Armsteeg. There are six beautiful restored Delft Blue houses in a row. Another nice idea is to go bargain hunting for fashion in de Red Light District. Several former prostitute’s windows in De Wallen have been transformed into exhibition spaces and studios for talented clothing, shoe and streetwear designers. ■
