presents the genius edition
A record number of Michelin star chefs at this year’s luxury fair The Genius Edition will see Masters of LXRY grow in terms of size, number of visitors and number of unique exhibitors. The bar has once again been raised. Only at Masters of LXRY can one find the best in the fields of art, interior design, photography, fashion, gadgets, gastronomy, jewellery, watches, boats, cars and travel under one roof. This underlines its status as Europe’s largest and most prestigious premium lifestyle fair founded on quality, craftsmanship and uniqueness. Here you will find everything that makes a city a city, including entire houses, restaurants, galleries, gardens, swimming pools, cars, boats, squares, theatres and, of course, people. The Genius Hall of Thought This year, visitors will access the fair via the completely renovated Elicium Entree and subsequently be welcomed in the Genius Hall of Thought where inspirational historical figures such as Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, Oprah Winfrey and Vincent van Gogh will share the power of Thinking Big in unexpected ways. Culinary world-record Over the past few years, Masters of LXRY has become a culinary experience. This year, visitors will be able to sit down at the largest ever sushi-belt featuring a multitude of exclusive Japanese dishes. The famous Italian restaurant Toscanini will also be present next to the best foodtrucks in the Netherlands scene on the 6th of December. This year, Gassan celebrates the 10th anniversary of the successful Choices by DL. Masters of LXRY is the only event at which Gassan displays the largest watch collection in Europe. It includes unique pieces by world-famous makers such as Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Tudor and OMEGA. Charity Over the years, Masters of LXRY has collaborated with a variety of big and small charities. In 2016, we organised “Een knuffel voor Emma” in aid of the new neonatal intensive care unit at Emma children’s hospital. Where to begin?
That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here.
You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)
REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life.
JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!
THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sightseeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do.
9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, bou tiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes.
LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums. THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. When you are interested in Haute Couture visit the designers Mart Visser en Frans Molenaar. You will find other Dutch Designers throughout of Amsterdam like the international well known Designers Viktor & Rolf , Mart Visser, Jan Jansen Shoes, Tony Cohen, Monique Collignon and Marlies Dekkers, young talented designers such as Edwin Oudshoorn, Dennis Diem and Dorhout Mees are also Amsterdam-based fashion houses. Part of the charm of the exclusive shopping experience in Amsterdam is the lovely neighbourhoods you’ll discover along the way. The Willemsparkweg also has a variety of tempting cafés and restaurants. CORNELIS SCHUYTSTRAAT Halfway down the Willemsparkweg you’ll cross the Cornelis Schuytstraat – the perfect place to put together a complete new outfit. Step inside French Connection for the best in British design. Admire the designer shoes at Shoebaloo or Manwood, and then find the perfect earrings or watch at one of the many jewellers on the street. BEETHOVENSTRAAT A few blocks from the Cornelis Schuytstraat, the Beethovenstraat hides a number of treasures in this fairly compact shopping street. Here you’ll find popular Dutch designers like Pauw or Claudia Sträter, as well as a number of jewellers and specialty shops. Sterre & Tijl has gorgeous furniture, toys and clothes for babies and infants, while The CINQ - 17
English Hatter offers a selection of hats for the distinguished gentleman. If your taste in luxury extends to food, stop by Huize van Wely for amazing chocolate bonbons or sample the delectable cheeses at Tromp. UTRECHTSESTRAAT In the heart of the city centre, the Utrechtsestraat starts at the Rembrandtplein and crosses Amsterdam’s most famous canals. The street has a mix of shops, but gets more luxurious with each passing year. First Marc by Marc Jacobs is at Utrechtsestraat 120. If you collect antiques or modern art, the Spiegelkwartier is the place to go. Just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum you will find this historical neighbourhood with its typical old Dutch houses. This area has been the heart of the national art and antiques trade for the past eighty years and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such a stunning choice of art and antiques. HISTORY Today one finds fine art and antiques dealers in almost every house in the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and on the Spiegelgracht. This is the result of a historical development of almost 120 years. Without the building of the renown Rijksmuseum the neighbourhood would surely have looked very different. Before the Rijksmuseum was built (1877/1885) there used to be a large windmill on that spot. The existing small business like watchmakers, carpenters, furniture repair shops etc, slowly changed into art and antique dealers. ARTS & ANTIQUES (MINI MUSEUMS) In a cluster of historic houses, you can find a rich treasure-trove of art and antiques,mini-museums that invite you not only to admire, but give you the opportunity to buy. The shops and galleries of the Spiegelkwartier offer some of the finest art and antiques you’re likely to find anywhere in the world, from Roman glass to Dutch Old Masters, from Delftware to tribal art, contemporary sculpture to Art Deco jewellery, centuries-old furniture to a painting finished yesterday. The Spiegelkwartier has been at the heart of the Dutch art and antiques trade for more than a hundred years. Over 70 specialised dealers offer not only top-quality collections, but considerable expertise. And they gladly share there expertise with you. RIJKSMUSEUM According to old address books the first antique dealer started in 1900 in de Kerkstraat nr 219. In 1910 there are already seven antique shops mentioned. After the war the number of galleries and shops really extended. If one looks at the objects bought by the Rijksmuseum in the Spiegelkwartier one notices that it mainly concerns objects like furniture, glass, textile and earthenware.
This is not surprising since the shops were specialized in these antiquities. The proof of a historically grown connection with the Rijksmuseum is the exhibition in 1985 of a selection of objects bought in the Spiegelkwartier. FROM ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDS TO SOUVENIRS The Art and Antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archeological finds to 17th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware, from oriental art to Art Nouveau, from tribal art to contemporary art, from medieval statues and antique clocks to jewellery and, last but not at least paintings from the COBRA period or finished yesterday. And you don’t have to break the plastic, also for little money you can buy an unique ‘souvenir’. FOOD & DRINKS & SHOPPING Tucked in between these Aladdin’s caves are cafés and restaurants perfect for a little time out, whether you feel like a bowl of healthy soup, or coffee and cake; a light lunch or dinner with singing staff. You can pick up nifty vintage clothes at knock-down prices, or pre-loved designer wear. Then there are shoes and bags from famed Dutch designers and gifts aplently, from stylish Dutch contemporary object to toys for the kids back home. MUSEUMS A visit to the Spiegelkwartier is easy to combine with a visit to one of many museums in the area. At walking distance you will find the Rijksmuseum, Vincent van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, FOAM and the Allard Pierson museum. performs in The Netherlands Their biggest hit in The Netherlands is ‘All out of Love’. Soft rock band Air Supply performs on the 8th and 9th of December in the RAI theater in Amsterdam. Despite the fact they are popular all over the world, Air Supply never before came to The Netherlands. For their first ever visit they created a special concert with all major hits. Sing along with “Lost in Love”, “All Out of Love”, “The One That You Love”, “Sweet Dreams”, and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All”.
Leadsingers Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing. “Lost in Love” was their first big success and became the fastest selling single in the world, leaping to the top of all of the charts. The second single was “All Out of Love,” and that went up the charts even quicker. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles’ run of consecutive top five singles. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named Song of the

As from 28 March, exactly 75 years later, you can experience it at the Dutch Resistance Museum as part of the interactive exhibition Risk of explosion! On 27 March 1943, a group of artists enters the Registry Office. They overpower the guards, tie them up and move them to Artis. Back inside, they place the explosives. The resistance fighters rush out of the building leaving a sign on the door: RISK OF EXPLOSION! A while later, they hear a number of loud bangs: the attack was a success.

Hermitage Amsterdam’s new exhibition, Classic Beauties, will be opened at June 16. The show tells how artists and tourists flocked to Italy, and more especially Rome, in the second half of the 18th century. From all over Europe they travelled to the Eternal City in search of inspiration and to see the newly excavated classical Greco-Roman sculptures and buildings. Their experiences prompted a new and austere kind of fashionable architecture and, in the visual arts, an unprecedentedly sensual style that sent shock waves through society: a naked, superhuman beauty more daring than anything attempted by the Greeks and Romans. Neoclassicism was born.

Alone, Paul surrenders to a series of visions in which Marie and Mariëtta merge into one, before ultimately strangling Mariëtta. The long dream sequence ends when Mariëtta returns to pick up the umbrella she had forgotten. When she leaves and Frank enters, Paul promises his friend that he will start his life anew.
Sharon Eyal’s dance is hypnotic, wild, bold and energetic. Eyal danced with the famous Batsheva Dance Company for over twenty years, after which she set up her own company L-E-V. She took seven dancers with her from Batsheva and launched L-E-V to immediately join the very best in the world. Eyal understands the art of speaking through dance. Intense emotions, which are difficult to put into words, are intricately expressed in movement. If need be she turns her body inside out. Apart from being intensely emotional, her work is also expertly danced and a delight to watch.

Lunchtime Concerts For many years now, free Lunchtime Concerts have been held in the Main Hall and the Recital Hall. Usually, these Lunchtime Concerts take place on Wednesdays, but please check the concert schedule as this occasionally changes. The concerts range from public rehearsals by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, to chamber music performances by young up-and-coming artists.
The Bimhuis workshop is freely accessible to both musicians and audience. All instruments, including vocals, are welcome. Advanced registration is not necessary. Musicians who’d like to follow the workshop are required to be present and ready to play at 8PM. It’s possible to come and listen first without taking part. The subject is improvisation, or what happens when you perform without deciding beforehand what to play. About the level: participants will have to realize that this workshop takes place at an international venue, in the presence of an audience.

Residentie Orkest The Hague take care of the opening of the festival, led by Otto Tausk and with renowned violinist Antje Weithaas. Together with students from the Royal Conservatoire they will play Gubaidulina’s Offertorium, the Russian’s international breakthrough violin concerto, as well as Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.

The cheeses are plain or flavoured with various herbs and spices such as cumin, pepper, fenugreek or chilli pepper. After the demonstration, guests are welcome to sample the unique flavours of our cheese products and further explore and enjoy the ambiance of our farmstead at their leisure. In the Marker Museum you will experience our past. Here you can learn about daily life from art, handicraft, traditional costumes and utensils. The museum is housed in a fine landmark near the church, consisting of six historical buildings – with the characteristic “whitewashed” interior walls. We have a natural aversion to violence, strife and hatred. Yet there is beauty to be found in battle and combat, for instance when they are incorporated in a dance performance or depicted in a painting. In Beauty of the Battle, CODA Museum Apeldoorn confronts its visitors with this apparent contradiction. Commissioned by CODA director Carin Reinders, guest curator Wim van der Beek selected works by 22 artists for this exhibition, which explores the boundaries of hate and love, danger and beauty. Beauty of the Battle is an impressive presentation that connects painting, sculpture, video art, performance art, installations and dance. RESTAURANTS | CAFÉS As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun. BARS | LIVE MUSIC Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go. COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.
JORDAAN The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. REMBRANDTPLEIN Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. An Amsterdammertje is the typical red brown steel bollard that is used to separate the sidewalk from the street in Amsterdam.

DRIVING A CAR IN AMSTERDAM Amsterdam’s historic centre wasn’t built for the modern means of transportation and as a result it has become quite congested over the years. Driving in Amsterdam is not recommended.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT Amsterdam can best be travelled by public transport. Parking is not only a problem, but also rather expensive. TAXIS In the Netherlands it is not customary to hail a taxi. To take a taxi you go to a taxi rank, of which there are many. In your hotel, restaurants, shops, etc. you can ask to order you a taxi, or you can call +31 20 777 7777. Taxis are of good quality, but relatively expensive.
ELECTRICITY The voltage in the Netherlands is 230 volts.
CANAL BIKES If you care to venture into the canals on your own or if you’re feeling energetic, you can also try the more adventurous pedal boats.
