WELCOME TO SING!

“Papa’s Bible” photo by Gilbert Lennox

GETTY MUSIC WORSHIP CONFERENCE

Dear Friends,

Welcome to a new year of the Sing! Conference and a new program book to help you navigate it all! We pray these days bring times of refreshing and stir us up to faithfully sing and live out the gospel of the Lord Jesus. We are grateful for your presence here and indeed the team of great people who will be sharing in these next few days.

So much of the story of the Bible is told in its songs. As we read through the pages we see how prone God’s people are to forget His goodness and his wondrous deeds. He gives the gift of singing and the gifts of songs to help us remember (Deuteronomy 31). Remembering opens our hearts to praise Him. Singing His praise brings health to our bones, relief to our minds and deep joy to our souls!

May the Lord use these days to his good purpose, filling us up again at the streams of His truth so that the song of our churches and our homes and our lives may flow from this life-giving spring.

“Tell me the story of Jesus, write on my heart every word”

Love bids us welcome with them to the feast

Let us be joyful therefore, let us sing Old Hundredth with our forbears. One high priest

Calls us together in a great thanksgiving To come before his presence with a song, Enter his courts with praise, be glad and bring

Our very best to him. For we belong To him since he has made us, and our hearts Will find their peace in him alone. We long

Therefore to come at last beyond the gates Of time and space, and with the saints to taste That joy for which the whole creation waits.

But whilst we wait there is no time to waste In keeping faith with each new generation, And showing them his mercy and his grace.

VISION FOR SING!

SING! is an initiative of Keith and Kristyn Getty to help individuals, families, and churches deepen their faith through singing.

The core values of the SING! movement are:

DEEP THEOLOGY • TIMELESS ARTISTRY • CONGREGATIONAL SINGING

Keith and Kristyn’s Sing! book was released in September 2017 at the inaugural SING! Conference. That first gathering, which commemorated the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, inaugurated a ten-year journey considering the importance of what we sing for all of life.

Lord willing, we plan to meet again September 1-3, 2025, in Nashville and online for Sing! From Generation To Generation. We invite you to join us when we release the new hymnal and celebrate centuries of hymnody.

ABOUT KEITH AND KRISTYN

Keith and Kristyn Getty are hymn writers, GRAMMY®-nominated artists, and the founding leaders of the Getty Music organization who hail from Northern Ireland. Their greatest musical passion is writing and championing great hymns of the church.

Their songwriting journey began in 2000 when Keith wrote the tune for “In Christ Alone” on the back of a Northern Ireland Electricity bill. Many songs, albums, and—most importantly—four daughters later, they still wake up each morning amazed that they get to spend their days crafting melodies and words to encourage and inspire the people of God.

Keith and Kristyn love fostering creative collaborations. They established Getty Music with a view to the year 2050 in the hope that individuals, families, and churches would celebrate the beauty of Christ-centered hymnody. Their hymn writing team includes a growing array of contributors who are as committed to family and the local church as they are to the craft of songwriting. Their group’s songs include 40 of the top 500 titles sung in US/UK churches in the last year, and their original publishers, Integrity Music, estimate that more than 100 million people around the globe sing this music every year in a diverse array of contexts. Their hymns uniquely cross genres, finding expression in styles from contemporary to classical as well as folk and global. The Getty Music team is currently developing the Sing! Hymnal, slated to be released in 2025 in partnership with Crossway.

Keith and Kristyn enjoy filling their lives with songs of the Lord, whether at home with their daughters, in the sanctuary of their local church, or in all of the places around the world they’ve had the privilege to visit—from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Ole Opry House, the Kennedy Center to Sydney Opera House, with performances for Presidents, Prime Ministers, and television specials on PBS, CBS, BBC, and TBN in between! They host the annual Sing! Conference in Nashville, TN (named after their 2017 book), and are now particularly excited to share Sing! events on each continent, as well as to help lead music this year at the Fourth Lausanne Congress in South Korea.

According to Christianity Today, Keith and Kristyn have “changed the way evangelicals worship.” The hymn “In Christ Alone,” co-written by Stuart Townend, has received numerous accolades, from being named the second most beloved hymn in the UK by the BBC to being selected as one of the top five hymns of all time by the British Hymn Society. Keith was the first contemporary Christian musician to be awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 for his contributions to music and hymnody. Their other acknowledgments include one GRAMMY® nomination, one mainstream Billboard #1, two GMA Dove awards (with 16 nominations), three honorary doctorates, and the honor of being named Fellows of the Royal School of Church Music.

Kristyn’s creativity has led to wider opportunities, such as recording the entire ESV Bible as an audio version for Crossway. Three of Kristyn’s books for children are set to be released in 2024 and 2025, which includes a children’s biography on Joni Eareckson Tada.

Keith and Kristyn are especially excited about the Getty Music Foundation, a non-profit organization with a mission to educate hymn writers and spur biblical worship in under-resourced areas of the globe.

Together with their four daughters, Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville.

Malcolm Guite

POET IN RESIDENCE

Poet-Priest Malcolm Guite was Chaplain for 20 years at Girton College, and is now a Life Fellow of the college. He lectures widely in England and North America on Theology and Literature. His books include: Love, Remember (2017); Mariner, a spiritual biography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (2017); Parable and Paradox (2016); The Singing Bowl (2013); Sounding the Seasons (2012); Theology and the Poetic Imagination (2010) and Faith Hope and Poetry (2006). Malcolm has edited two poetry anthologies for Lent and Advent: The Word in the Wilderness (2014) and Waiting on the Word (2015).

After Prayer, Malcolm’s poetic response to George Herbert’s poem Prayer was published in 2019. David’s Crown, Malcolm’s poetic response to all the Psalms, was published in spring 2021.

In 2021 he was awarded the Archbishop Lanfranc medal for education and scholarship by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Malcolm has a particular interest in the imagination as a truth-bearing faculty and continues to reflect deeply on how poetry can stimulate and re-awaken our prayer life.

This poem is a celebration of language and literacy, the magical way that words can summon up images, images that bring with them whole worlds, all the hidden correspondences between Word and World, a magic witnessed by the way a word like spell means both to spell a word and to make magic, the way chant is embedded in enchantment. But there is, as C. S. Lewis would say, a deeper magic still. If all language is a kind of spell, it is a Good Spell (or Gospel as we later shortened that term). For Christian Faith points to a single source, in the Word, the Logos of God, for both the mystery of language and the mystery of being. Christ is the Word within all words, the Word behind all worlds. So this poem celebrates the God-given power and mystery of language, the magic of naming, the summoning powers entrusted to us in the twenty-six letters of our alphabet. – Malcolm Guite

SpellSummon the summoners, the twenty-six enchanters. Spelling silence into sound, they bind and loose, they find and are not found. Re-call the river-tongues from Alph to Styx, summon the summoners, the shaping shapes the grounds of sound, the generative gramma signs of the Mystery, inscribed arcana runes from the root-tree written in the deeps, leaves from the tale-tree lifted, swift and free, shining, re-combining in their dance the genesis of every utterance, pattering the pattern of the Tree. Summon the summoners, and let them sing. The summoners will summon Everything.

A Word on This Year’s Conference Art

“Summon the summoners…spelling silence into sound”

(read the full poem on the preceding page)

God is not silent. He speaks to us. In His creation. In His Holy Scriptures. And “in these last days” through His Son, the living Word. The first and last word are His. We can speak only because He did. How miraculous is the gift of language given to us that we might return a language of praise to Him!

This year’s theme is “Sing! Songs of the Bible”. This year’s commissioned visual art will help illuminate that theme by considering the building blocks of language, the alphabet of sounds. Hidden in these sounds are the notes of intelligent design and light. When joined together they bring melodies of truth and grace for all to hear.

In the darkness something was happening at last. A voice had begun to sing…There were no words. It was hardly a tune. But it was, beyond comparison, the most beautiful sound he had ever heard.

(Aslan singing Narnia into being; C.S. Lewis, The Magician’s Nephew)

With the help of renowned Irish artist Ross Wilson, we will focus on three letters of the Hebrew language, the original language of the Psalms we sing. These letters are actually found written down in Psalm 119 which follows an acrostic pattern. This literary motif gives a sense of the completeness and beauty of God’s Word.

Each letter–the first, middle, and last–will mark each day of the conference.

Day 1 - Songs of the Old Testament

Aleph (Psalm 119:1-8)

The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet is Aleph, a letter associated with the beginning. Our Creator God is the source and foundation of human reason, language, meaning, and order.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3, ESV)

“You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.” (Psalm 119:4)

“Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?” (Lyrics of Isaiah 40:21)

Day 2 - Songs of the New Testament

Mem (Psalm 119:97-104)

The middle letter of the Hebrew alphabet is Mem. It is often associated with water and pathways. As we move to the New Testament, we see Christ succeed where Israel has failed. He is the dawning light, the living water, the path of life, the promises of the Old Testament fulfilled in the New.

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103)

“…Jesus stood up and cried out, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ”Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”’” (John 7:37-38)

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people…as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets of old.” (Song of Zechariah, Luke 1:68,70)

Day 3 - The Bible in the Modern World

Tav (Psalm 119:169-176)

The final letter of the Hebrew alphabet is Tav. It is associated with truth, completion, the end. We hold fast to the truth with confidence that every Word of the Lord will be fulfilled (Isaiah 55:11).

“Let my plea come before you; deliver me according to your word.” (Psalm 119:170)

“Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.” (Lyrics of Isaiah 41:4)

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” (Song from Revelation 5:13)

The letters together

These three sounds (reading right to left) make the Hebrew word “emet”, meaning “truth”. God’s Word is the truth we sing and live and share.

“The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.“ (Psalm 119:160)

We would like to thank Ross Wilson for his beautiful work and would direct you to his thoughts on the art on the next page.

ALEPH MEM TAV

BEHIND THE ART: Aleph,

Mem, Tav | Ross Wilson

What inspired your approach in how you created these three artworks?

God’s word, both spoken by Him, and recorded in scripture, gives breath, being, and form, it’s literally speaking creativity. God first reveals Himself through His creativity. He is a maker. He is our maker. My approach to the making of these artworks is based on the idea of God’s word giving form to what we see around us. I wanted each letter to have its own unique form, connecting into its own unique sound and original meaning.I have simply attempted to give each one of these three letters, a unique visual dynamic, to help reflect the continual shaping of God’s word, to us and in us.

What inspired the process?

Research into the Hebrew text, the structure of how a letter is set down, the idea of how its shape, becomes paired with its sound, how we actually make the sound, because when reading we first recognise the shape of the letter. The process started very simply, looking a the outline of each letter, making drawings, and coloured studies, and then applying a type of three dimensional imaginative spacial process, giving each letter, colour, volume, and form.

How do you hope people will engage with the art?

My obvious hope is that people will both visually and spiritually connect, that they will engage both, outwardly, and inwardly. That as the conference progresses, day by day, what we hear will go deeper, and become more insightful, challenging each of us to move towards a revived gospel purpose in the midst of a lost and despairing world.

Why is art important in worship?

Creativity and art is part of God’s image in us. The irony is that over many centuries we have let ourselves be educated out of creativity, ‘we’ the church, can often lean into a dulling down, a kind of reverse illumination, where the mediocre and the mundane, can so easily replace the majestic and the inspirational within our worship. I believe that redemption through Christ, is the ultimate form of creativity known to humankind, and that through the profound mystery of re-birth, we each have a core responsibility to inspire the church, it is part of our duty to breathe out the alphabet of God’s grace, to show a sense of wonder and hope, in and through our worship towards a holy, loving and giving God.

More songs from the team behind

“In Christ Alone” and “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death”

We live in the most exciting time to be Christians.

There are more professing Christians than at any point in human history, more churches planting, and the Bible is in more languages than at any point in human history.

Yet the challenges are more fierce than at any point and the global church - a great multitude from all tribes and peoples and languages, bound together in Christ - needs more support than ever before. Deep believers need encouragement to sing together of the incomparable riches of His grace.

Since the Sing! conference began we have been investing time and financial resources in ensuring the conference was available in other languages and we have been able to offer travel grants (with free passes) to Christian leaders around the world.

Now through the newly-founded Foundation, we are translating this year’s Sing! Global conference sessions into at least 10 languages (Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish), making them freely available through networks across the globe throughout the fall.

Keith and Kristyn Getty established the Getty Music Foundation in 2021 as a global expansion of their vision to equip believers with hymns to carry for life. The Foundation’s ministry activities include training global hymn writers; hosting educational events; translating and distributing teaching resources; and connecting strategic leaders to the work of deepening Christ-centered corporate worship. Through an ever-growing network of like-minded partners, the Foundation seeks to invigorate the next generation of hymn writers and musical leaders, all with the prayerful hope that churches around the world might be increasingly marked by rich theology, timeless artistry, and robust singing.

2022 2023 2024

In addition to this, in 2022 we intend to bring over 100 musicians and church leaders from around the world to be part of the conference, to help resource, inspire and learn from the communities from which they came.

2023 sees the inaugural International Sing! conference, in addition to the annual event in Nashville. We are planning for these to rotate round the continents in four-year patterns, with 2023 being “Sing! Europe” in Belfast, to which we aim to bring over 100 leaders from many different countries in Europe to be part of the multi-day event.

This year the Foundation has the exciting opportunity to back the Getty’s leadership of worship at the Fourth Annual Lausanne Congress in Seoul, South Korea later this month. Both prayer and financial support are needed to sustain Keith and Kristyn in fulfilling their important responsibilities at this historic event.

In 2024 and beyond we also look forward to working in partnership with the Sing! Hymnal to continue our mission to educate the global church with this new opportunity.

The Foundation is registered with the IRS as a non-profit with 501c3 status. Operating with an independent Board and staff, it has a single-minded focus on its charitable mission. The Foundation began with a tithe of royalties and income from the Getty Music Group and now welcomes contributions from all who seek to invest in its exciting and impactful mission.

Song of Moses, Exodus 15:1

SINGING THE WORD

Colossians 3:16 is the clearest statement about musical praise in the New Testament: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

There is much to learn from this verse about how we should worship. However, let me lean into one primary principle regarding corporate singing: Music in worship should be viewed as an extension of the ministry of the word. Too often, preaching and music conflict. Our preaching and singing, however, should work together so that the word of Christ dwells richly in the saints. For that matter, all that happens in our corporate gatherings should build up the Lord’s people through the ministry of the word.

When we teach, admonish, and sing to one another, the word of Christ dwells in us more richly. These three elements, when practiced in the wisdom of Christ (Colossians 2:3), serve a specific purpose: mutual edification. Singing

in worship is not a form of entertainment; it is a powerful tool for building one another up in Christlikeness, reinforcing the communal nature of our worship.

Spiritual formation through corporate singing can take on different forms –songs, hymns, and spiritual songs. God likes a variety of music, including styles of music that you may not like. Yet, our tastes, customs, or preferences should not govern what and how we sing. The supremacy of Christ (Colossians 1:18) is glorified as his word dwells richly in us through music that teaches the wisdom of the word.

And, of course, our singing of the word should not be done mechanically, ritualistically, or halfheartedly. Our worship must be in spirit and truth (John 3:24). Therefore, let us sing the word to one another with thankfulness in our hearts to God. The psalmist exhorts, “Come before his presence with singing!” (Psalm 100:2). May we sing with all our hearts before the Lord, who is infinitely good, steadfast in love, and great in faithfulness to us in Christ!

God’s people have been singing their way through war and suffering for ages. When the Ephesians were being persecuted and threatened with torture, Paul commanded them to encourage “one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart” (Ephesians 5:19). Paul himself takes his own advice when bloodied, bruised, and shackled in jail—he boisterously sings a hymn at

midnight, proving that spiritual songs are powerful ammunition for besieged Christians.

Ukrainian believers see themselves in the choir of Levites who marched onto the battlefield in front of Jehoshaphat’s troops singing, “Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever.” (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).

Singing hymns of the faith in desperate times throws the devil into confusion, sending his hoards running.

Even so, when things look dark, most of us find it hard to sing. But that’s when it’s time to reach for a hymnal, flip to a stalwart, solid hymn and sing invigorating stanzas that foster hope and faith.

Yes, life is an unrelenting war, filled with doubts, disabilities, and death. So, remember your best defense in every assault is to “Sing and make melody with your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19). Be inspired by your brothers and sisters in Ukraine, for when you find there is no music left in your life, our Great Composer still has a melody orchestrated for you. Wait upon him. And then, sing his brave music on the battlefront!

HOW THE PSALMS Teach Us to Sing

Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!

- Psalm 96:1

God’s people have always been a singing people. There must be a robust expression of our testimony to his grace, something not just seen in our lives but heard from our voices. The Psalms teach us why singing is important, showing us what to sing about, each song like a diamond revealing the many facets of God’s character. Worship comes as a response to the revelation of God, and he has revealed himself to us in different ways. In Psalm 96, he is Creator, he is King, he is Judge. This final characteristic is the central cadence as we are called to rejoice in the perfect reign of God as the Judge of all heaven and earth.

The world is moving toward a time of judgment that will bring joy or terror, relief or dread, depending on the condition of our hearts. Judgment may not be something we are quick to celebrate in worship, but it is an

attribute the psalmist David does not hesitate to exalt. We cannot understand God’s love and grace without understanding his justice. And once we are secure in his grace, we are free to rejoice in his justice.

In Revelation, John mourns when it seems no one is worthy to open the scrolls of judgment. One of the elders replies, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah . . . has conquered, so that he can open the scroll” (Rev. 5:5). John’s vision exemplifies how only Christ is worthy, for only he is able to bring ultimate justice to the earth; it is his sacrifice that accomplishes reconciliation between us and God.

All who have believed in Christ have been clothed in his righteousness. They no longer face condemnation. Every tear of injustice and scar of affliction finds its healing and hope in him. This is an incredible revelation of grace that stirs our hearts to worship. This is the good news we

must sing about before the nations where people are bound by many physical and spiritual chains. Judgment belongs to the Lord, and he will make things right. We cannot place our hope in other things to “fix” the world, nor do we despair about the world’s current condition, for we know that when he comes, “he comes to judge the earth” (Ps. 96:13).

Are you singing words that bear the comfort and challenge of both God’s justice and his grace to your heart and those around you? Are you choosing each day, by grace, to live in the joy and the readiness his return inspires, joining with the seas, fields, and forests to long for the perfect harmony of God and for his creation to be restored?

Let my soul live and praise you, and let your rules help me.

Tav, Psalm 119:175

“Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the Nations!”

Song of Moses and of The Lamb, Revelation 15:3

“Behold, I am making all things new.”

THE GOOD LIFE

Trip Lee

Iam a lover of hip hop. I fell in love with the music from when I was 10, and I’ve never been the same since. As a child and a teenager, when I wasn’t in class or asleep, I was listening to my favorite rappers. I hung on their every word, and they had a lot to say. Most rappers don’t intend to be teachers, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t learning. I listened closely to their ideas about the good life—and I liked what I heard.

With albums in my CD player such as Get Rich or Die Trying, are you surprised my idea of the good life was having a wallet so stuffed it wouldn’t even close? It wasn’t all about money, though. I can’t forget the lessons I learned about status (chase it), women (chase them), and happiness (chase it by chasing the first two).

Don’t get me wrong, though. Hip hop music was not the problem; sinful lies were. The rest of the culture told me those exact same lies in a more subtle fashion. And my self-centered, glory-hungry heart ate them up. All of us live by faith, and sadly, I believed the lies of the enemy over the truth of God. But when I was still a teenager I met Jesus, and what I heard from Him challenged every idea I had about the good life.

I remember being puzzled by something I read in Philippians for the first time. Paul

spoke about death in a peculiar way. At the time, I’d heard many quotes about death. I’d heard it said that death is certain, and even that death should be accepted, but the Apostle Paul took it a step further. He said, “to die is gain” (Phil. 1:21).

Death is when your brain, your heart, and your lungs stop doing their job. Death means you’re separated from family and that your life work is over. Unlike our other trials, death is, for the deceased, literally “the end of the world”—the end of this one anyway. So how could death possibly be gain? It just didn’t fit with my old views of the good life.

In order for us to understand what Paul meant by these four words, to die is gain, we have to understand the four that came right before them. In Philippians 1, Paul explains why he seems to be okay with either staying alive or dying at the hands of his persecutors. He writes in verse 21, “to live is Christ” (emphasis mine). With those words, the apostle told me what life is really all about—Jesus. How could my self-centered, status-obsessed worldview survive next to that truth?

To live is not wealth. To live is not worldly success. To live is not sex. To live is not family. To live is Christ. We were created by Jesus and for Jesus, the merciful Savior who stood in our place and offers us new life. Jesus is our mediator before the Father, the motivation for all our decisions, and the driving force behind our every move. It’s all about Jesus. There is no good life apart from Jesus, because without Jesus life has no meaning.

This is why Paul could say, “to die is gain.” Whether he died or lived, Jesus would be honored. Life meant he got to serve Jesus and death meant he would get to be with Jesus—and there’s nowhere he would have rather been (v. 23). We can learn from Paul here. The truth is, it’s better to be dirt poor in the presence of Jesus than to be filthy rich in the presence of men.

Even though Paul was imprisoned and suffering when he wrote this, he was living an abundant life. He was living a satisfying life. He was living the good life. After reading those words as a teenager, I could no longer see the good life as just living it up. I began to see the good life as a life renewed by Jesus, driven by Jesus, and lived to the glory of Jesus.

There are many differences between the picture of the good life I learned from Paul and the picture I learned from the culture. But one of the biggest differences is how we get there. The world sells us a “good life” we have to earn. Yet this life remains out of reach even for some of those who work the hardest to achieve it. The biblical picture of “the good life” is different. It’s a free gift that’s available to all who believe. In John 11:25, Jesus says: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” That is good news.

As long as I believed the lies the culture told me, I wasn’t living the good life. But when I began to live by faith in the good God, my good life began. The man who lives for himself gains nothing lasting in this life, and he will only experience devastating loss in the next. But the man who lives for Christ gets a taste of the good life now, and his death only brings him what he desires most.
