ABOUT KEITH AND KRISTYN GETTY

Keith and Kristyn Getty are hymn writers, GRAMMY®-nominated artists and the founding leaders of the Getty Music organization who hail from Northern Ireland. Their greatest musical passion is writing and championing great hymns of the church.

Their songwriting journey began in 2000 when Keith wrote the tune for “In Christ Alone” on the back of a Northern Ireland Electricity bill. Many songs, albums, and—most importantly—four daughters later, they still wake up each morning amazed that they get to spend their days crafting melodies and words to encourage and inspire the people of God.

Keith and Kristyn love fostering creative collaborations. They established Getty Music with a view to the year 2050 in the hope that individuals, families, and churches would celebrate the beauty of Christ-centered hymnody. Their hymn writing team includes a growing array of contributors who are as committed to family and the local church as they are to the craft of songwriting. Their group’s songs include more than 50 in the top 500 titles sung in US/UK churches, and their original publishers, Integrity Music, estimate that more than 100 million people around the globe sing this music every year in a diverse array of contexts. Their hymns uniquely cross genres, finding expression in styles from contemporary to classical as well as folk and global. The Getty Music team is currently developing the Sing! Hymnal, slated to be released in 2025 in partnership with Crossway.

Keith and Kristyn enjoy filling their lives with songs of the Lord, whether at home with their daughters, in the sanctuary of their local church, or all of the places around the world they’ve had the privilege to visit—from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Ole Opry House, the Kennedy Center to Sydney Opera House, with performances for Presidents, Prime Ministers, and television specials on PBS, CBS, BBC, and TBN in between! They host the annual Sing! Conference in Nashville, TN (named after their 2017 book), and are now particularly excited to share Sing! events on each continent, as well as helping lead music this year at the Fourth Lausanne Congress in South Korea.

According to Christianity Today, Keith and Kristyn have “changed the way evangelicals worship.” The hymn “In Christ Alone,” co-written with writing mentor Stuart Townend, has received numerous accolades, from being named the second most beloved hymn in the UK by the BBC to being selected as one of the top five hymns of all time by the British Hymn Society. Keith was the first contemporary Christian musician to be awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 for his contributions to music and hymnody, and more of his compositions appear in CCLI’s Top 500 Songs in the UK than those of any other songwriter. The couple’s other acknowledgments include one GRAMMY® nomination, one mainstream Billboard #1, two GMA Dove awards (with 16 nominations), three honorary doctorates, receiving Fellowship of the Royal School of Church Music, and the Freedom of the City of Lisburn and Castlereagh.

Kristyn’s creativity has also led to wider opportunities such as recording the entire ESV Bible as an audio version for Crossway and appearances in films including Pilgrim’s Progress, Sabina, and the international edition of Leroy and Stitch. She is delighted to be releasing several children’s books. The Getty Girls, following the COVID hymn sings, won a GMA Dove Award for their album “Hymns from Home” as well as appearing on recordings, two tv documentaries and on each of their parents’ tours.

Keith and Kristyn are especially excited about the Getty Music Foundation, a new non-profit organization with a mission to educate hymn writers and spur biblical worship in under-resourced areas of the globe. Together with their four daughters, Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville.

The Getty Music Organization exists to create and curate hymns for the 21st century church. Our passion has always been to join rich theology, timeless artistry, and vibrant singing for the whole family of God in churches around the globe, a work that is expressed through multiple endeavors.

Getty Music’s Sing! Hymnal is an expansive new resource, to be published in partnership with Crossway in 2025, which will include a family of various print and digital editions.

Getty Music Foundation, a separate and independently operated not-for-profit organization, seeks to invest in educating the next generation of hymn writers and church musicians, with a particular emphasis on under-resourced parts of the world. In 2022 the Foundation supported the translation of Sing! Conference sessions into 15 different languages as well as granted scholarships for delegates to travel to Sing! Events around the globe. This year the Foundation additionally will help host several global teaching events, and in 2024 it will support the Fourth Lausanne Congress in Seoul, South Korea.

Keith and Kristyn Getty established the Getty Music Foundation in 2021 as a global expansion of their vision to equip believers with hymns to carry for life. The Foundation’s ministry activities include training global hymn writers, hosting educational events, translating and distributing teaching resources, and connecting strategic leaders to the work of deepening Christ-centered corporate worship. Through an ever-growing network of like-minded partners, the Foundation seeks to invigorate the next generation of hymn writers and musical leaders, with a focus on areas with limited resources, all with the prayerful hope that churches around the world might be increasingly marked by rich theology, timeless artistry, and robust singing.

This year, the Foundation’s efforts included creating and curating special training for hymn writers and translators from all over the world, especially those in developing nations. It also had the exciting opportunity to back the Getty’s leadership of worship at the Fourth Lausanne Congress in Seoul, South Korea, where over 220 countries were represented

Home for Christmas

In 1943, American soldiers were experiencing their first Christmas away from home during World War II. The song “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” was released that year, and Bing Crosby’s voice went out widely across the airwaves.

With its gaze homeward at a special time of the year, the song spoke to that universal love and longing for the place you feel most welcome, secure, connected. This year, for the first time in a while, we will be home for Christmas in Northern Ireland — so we recorded this song in honor of that!

When we first moved to America nearly 20 years ago, ideas of home suddenly became more significant. We were trying to build a new one in a new land while also being very much aware of our home thousands of miles away. We saw things at different angles. Feeling a little on the outside brought us into the inside of a deeper sense of home that’s beyond geography and beyond time.

Frederick Buechner once wrote, “Faith is homesickness. Faith is a lump in the throat… Faith is waiting. Faith is journeying through space and through time.”

Homesickness is such a compelling way to consider a life of faith. To follow Christ and find our rest in Him will always mean earthly life is a pilgrim journey; an immigrant’s story. One day I will be truly home. The love of home as we find it here and now only

presses that hope in more. This thought has always grown my sense of adventure, and when I have felt homesick or lonely, kept my heart up.

No home on earth is permanent. But perhaps our longing for home is the very thing that reminds us that we are made for something beyond what we can see, beyond what can be held in time and space.

If you feel on the outside looking in this evening…If your sense of home feels broken… If there is a homesickness niggling at your soul…Listen to the words of the carols, hear their good tidings, ask the Lord to open your heart to receive His grace, and be welcomed home.
