WELCOME TO SING!
Welcome to Sing! The Great Commission. It is great to see you and to hear you!
Like so many, we grew up inspired and influenced by the evangelistic ministry of Dr. Billy Graham. Who can forget the sound of thousands of voices raised together in different countries all over the world? When we began to write hymns, we were galvanized by how Dr. Graham and his team always included congregational singing in the crusades.
“The Christian faith is a singing faith, and a good way to express it and share it with others is in community singing.”
- Cliff Barrows, song and service leaderfor Billy Graham
Always true, it is with excitement and eagerness that we gather with you around this year’s urgent theme and the critical role of congregational singing in the missional life of the church.
We are very grateful to all the presenting musicians, songwriters, speakers, and artists who have joined us. Even as we seek to share the beauty and truth of the Lord Jesus through the best words and music and art we can, we are aware that we have this treasure in jars of clay. The surpassing power and glory belong to him who is the One who shines his truth in all our hearts (2 Cor 4:7)
We pray together, “May the peoples praise you; may all the peoples praise you” (Psalm 67:5).

SPECIAL THANKS TO VOM
Getty Music would like to extend our deepest thanks to our Official Missions Partner, The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM). Because of their partnership, we have been able to expand the vision and reach of the Sing! movement beyond what we would have ever dreamed possible, resulting in the equipping of thousands of churches and leaders. Their friendship and support have energized us during this season of ministry, and we could not be more thankful.
The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) is a nonprofit, interdenominational missions organization that serves persecuted Christians around the world. Founded in 1967 by Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand, VOM is dedicated to inspiring believers to deepen their commitment to Christ and to fulfill his Great Commission — no matter the cost.
As a special gift, every attendee will receive a free copy of “Captive in Iran” from VOM. We highly encourage you to sign up for their free prayer calendar and magazine to know how you can better pray for and serve the persecuted church around the world.
Today we feel the wind beneath our wings
Today the hidden fountain flows and plays
Today the church draws breath at last and sings
As every flame becomes a Tongue of praise. This is the feast of fire, air, and water
Poured out and breathed and kindled into earth.
The earth herself awakens to her maker
And is translated out of death to birth.
The right words come today in their right order
And every word spells freedom and release
Today the gospel crosses every border
All tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace
Today the lost are found in His translation.
Whose mother tongue is Love in every nation.
Used by permission. From Sounding the Seasons: Seventy Sonnets for the Christian Year (Norwich: Canterbury Press, 2012).
‘For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.’
2 Corinthians 4:5-7 ESV

ABOUT KEITH & KRISTYN
Keith and Kristyn Getty are hymn writers, GRAMMY®-nominated artists and the founding leaders of the Getty Music organization who hail from Northern Ireland. Their greatest musical passion is writing and championing great hymns of the church.
Their songwriting journey began in 2000 when Keith wrote the tune for “In Christ Alone” on the back of a Northern Ireland Electricity bill. Many songs, albums, and—most importantly—four daughters later, they still wake up each morning amazed that they get to spend their days crafting melodies and words to encourage and inspire the people of God.
Keith and Kristyn love fostering creative collaborations. They established Getty Music with a view to the year 2050 in the hope that individuals, families, and churches would celebrate the beauty of Christ-centered hymnody. Their hymn writing team includes a growing array of contributors who are as committed to family and the local church as they are to the craft of songwriting. Their group’s songs include 38 of the top 500 titles sung in US/UK churches, and their original publishers, Integrity Music, estimate that more than 100 million people around the globe sing this music every year in a diverse array of contexts. Their hymns uniquely cross genres, finding expression in styles from contemporary to classical as well as folk and global. The Getty Music team is currently developing the Sing! Hymnal, slated to be released in 2025 in partnership with Crossway.
Keith and Kristyn enjoy filling their lives with songs of the Lord, whether at home with their daughters, in the sanctuary of their local church, or all of the places around the world they’ve had the privilege to visit—from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Ole Opry House, the Kennedy Center to Sydney Opera House, with performances for Presidents, Prime Ministers, and television specials on PBS, CBS, BBC, and TBN in between! They host the annual Sing! Conference in Nashville, TN (named after their 2017 book), and are now particularly excited to share Sing! events on each continent, as well as to help lead music next year at the Fourth Lausanne Congress in South Korea.
According to Christianity Today, Keith and Kristyn have “changed the way evangelicals worship.” The hymn “In Christ Alone,” co-written by Stuart Townend, has received numerous accolades, from being named the second most beloved hymn in the UK by the BBC to being selected as one of the top five hymns of all time by the British Hymn Society. Keith was the first contemporary Christian musician to be awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 for his contributions to music and hymnody. Their other acknowledgments include one GRAMMY® nomination, one mainstream Billboard #1, two GMA awards (with 16 nominations), three honorary doctorates, and they have been named Fellows of the Royal School of Church Music.
Kristyn’s creativity has also led to wider opportunities such as recording the entire ESV Bible as an audio version for Crossway and appearances in films including Pilgrim’s Progress, Sabina, and the international edition of Leroy and Stitch. She is delighted to be releasing several children’s books in the upcoming years.
Keith and Kristyn are especially excited about the Getty Music Foundation, a new non-profit organization with a mission to educate hymn writers and spur biblical worship in under-resourced areas of the globe.
Together with their four daughters, Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville.

KRISTYN GETTY
For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.
-2 Corinthians 4:5-7
For thousands of years human hands have worked with clay to create useful and beautiful things. Colors and craftsmanship, textures and techniques change from age to age and place to place, showcasing a unique telling of the history of the world. Yet what is true in every case is that they are always artifacts of dust formed by the dust of an earthly hand.
“But clay and clay differs in dignity, Whose dust is both alike…”
(William
Shakespeare, Cymbeline, Act IV Scene II)
We ourselves are made of clay—miraculous clay with the image of God upon us, but still clay. It is the irreplaceable treasure he places within that is of greatest value and significance. This treasure is the knowledge and life of the Lord Jesus. 2 Corinthians tells us that in our vulnerability and in our weakness as clay, God’s glory is seen. Our fragility shows that the power belongs to him.
We gather for this conference as a congregation of clay pots, like the ones you see on the stage which have come from different parts of the world. We bring our distinctive stories and gifts, but we celebrate the greater treasure Christ has placed within. We rest in his great power at work within us as we obediently and humbly and creatively and courageously share the wondrous news of the Lord Jesus.
Each year at the Sing! Conference we commission new visual art to help illuminate our theme. This year it is the Great Commission. We are very grateful to have internationally acclaimed artist Ross Wilson with us again this year. He has drawn for us the clay pot featured in this year’s artwork (a replica of which you can see on the stage made by Irish potter Rory Shearer.)
Ross has also created for us three stunning portraits of three people from the Gospel accounts who had real encounters with Christ. The Lord saw each of them. He spoke to their souls. He sought to draw them to the light of his truth, a light that might shine through the fragile clay pot of their humanity.
The first portrait is of the Pharisee Nicodemus. On day one we will consider the Great Commission at a local level. John 3 details the time Jesus spends with a local leader well-acquainted with the Hebrew culture and religious heritage from which Christianity was born.
Each of us sing and speak and live in the local spaces where the Lord has placed us: our families, our churches, our communities. In these places, often most familiar to us, we seek in every way to make clear how “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son….”
The second portrait is of the “Woman at the Well.” On day two our theme is evangelism globally. In John 4, filling water into a jar at a well opened up a greater conversation of living water, the greater treasure only found in Christ. Both as a woman and a Samaritan she was considered an “outsider,” someone the disciples thought might be beyond the borders of Jesus’ interest.
Christ is the only hope for all nations. He has called us to go into every corner of the world. Do our songs, our services, and our lives reach beyond our home comforts? Do they reach out to the nations that more might come and see Christ? There are still two billion people yet to hear of him.
The third portrait is of Jairus’ daughter. On day three our theme is evangelism and the challenge for future generations. In Mark 5 Jesus raises Jairus’ twelve-year-old daughter from the dead. His words, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise,” press upon our own hearts as we think about the children around us and those yet to be born.
In light of the very real challenges, we pray that the coming generations might be rooted in the grace and authority of Christ’s word above all other voices. How can we bring clarity and confidence, peace and eternity to the worship gathering times we have in our homes and together as the church?
You can read more about Ross Wilson and the pieces of art later in the program. We hope his beautiful work might help rekindle our passion to proclaim Christ, to share the gospel light he sets within us to everyone we meet. We know that the surpassing power to follow him and make him known belongs to Christ and not to us.
Only one life, yes only one, Now let me say, “Thy will be done;” And when at last I’ll hear the call, I know I’ll say “twas worth it all;” Only one life, twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.
-C.T. Studd, British missionary, 1860-1931
Ross Wilson
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Ross Wilson is one of Northern Ireland’s leading artists and sculptors. He has been a guest speaker at Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Wilson’s many portrait commissions include Nobel Laureates Seamus Heaney and Derek Walcott for the National Portrait Gallery, London. He is also the creator of the C.S. Lewis Centenary Sculpture “The Searcher” located in East Belfast. In 2019 he received a BEM from Queen Elizabeth for outreach work amongst underprivileged communites in Northern Ireland.
BEHIND THE ART: ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS | ROSS WILSON
The portraits are visual interpretations, observations, connecting the lives of three individuals and their unique biblical narratives, each resulting in a dynamic life-changing encounter with Christ.
The desired focus within each portrait is simply to convey a sense of reflective wonder and illumination, to highlight the experience of individual “grace exchange” through the directional love of Christ.
Nicodemus encountered Christ on a search for meaning. Like Nicodemus, I also yearned to leave he darkness of a “not knowing life” and be drawn into the truth of rebirth and redemption.
Like the Samaritan woman at the well, I experienced a deep inner thirst for the living water.
And as a father, way back, I also knew the overwhelming anxiety for a young daughter on the brink.
Each portrait links into the scriptural narrative, yet each portrait is also informed by a profound set of personal experiences.
The process of visualization, of making, had its starting point in text, imagination, and reason. Images evolved through a combination of techniques and a range of mixed media and materials. These materials included graphite pencil, acrylic paint, ink, mono printing, layered paper collage, and spay can aerosol paints; finally each portrait was worked onto a metal panel base. The resulting creative cohesion of imagination, materials, and technique, helped visualize and bring to life three composite portraits, each one a glimpse of a likeness into an encounter with Christ.
In the completed portraits we see the “eyes of the heart enlightened”—given sight into a new and accessible way, into the truth, and the life of rebirth. This is the greatest of all creativity.

John 20:21-23“Peace be with you, peace and peace again.”
He gives and gives and gives that lost Shalom
Until at last we know it to the bone
And hear, as prodigals, good news from home.
He gives not only peace, but purpose too,
A sending from the one who has been sent:
“As God sent me so I am sending you
With all my Father’s love and power you’re sent.
You’re sent with good news to a weary world
With love that leads the vilest to repent,
God’s full forgiveness is released through you.
You have Shalom to share! So do not hold
It to yourselves, but share it lavishly
That all who choose may find new life in me.”
Matthew 28:16-20Now he reveals that this is not the end
But only the beginning of his grace.
Eleven, half-believing, saw his face; It was enough, more than enough, to send
That ragged band of misfits through the world
Amazed and freighted with a weight of glory, By love inspired, by persecution hurled
To earth’s four corners, glad to tell their story:
The story of the God who has come down
Into the midst of everything, come down
To find us all and share in all our pain
That we might share the fulness of his glory
That we might be baptized and born again
And live for ever in the Three in One.
CityAlight
BAND IN RESIDENCE
CityAlight is a ministry of an Anglican church on the side of an infrequently busy road in Castle Hill, Sydney. The church, unsurprisingly, is called St Paul’s Castle Hill. Most of us involved are volunteers. We are not professionals. The vision of CityAlight is to write songs with biblically rich lyrics and simple melodies for the Christian church to sing. We are very pleased to admit there is nothing groundbreaking in what we do. There is nothing especially new or unique or fashionable. We are not on the forefront of anything and do not pretend to be. (It is probably better to be three hundred years out of date than three.) Instead, we are doing what the Christian church has done since Jesus and his disciples sung a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. For thousands of years now Christians have been writing simple songs about the great truths of the gospel for their churches to sing. And we are very honored to join in that long tradition, investing it with meaning to people in this generation.
Most churches around the world are not large. Some figures tell us that the average number in Australia is about 70. That means these are churches without large music teams or complicated sound equipment. These are churches with one guitar, or no guitar, one organ, one trombone, two singers – something like that. And we want to partner with those faithful congregations. Our vision is to resource them with simple songs. There is nothing on earth like the sound of a church singing, big or small, ancient or modern, skilled or not. The sound of a church singing has preceded almost every great revival in church history. The church is God’s witness and representative on earth. Is there any wonder that a tremendous power comes about when the representative voice of God in the earth is singing.
We desire to get out of the way so the truth upon which all our songs are built can properly shine. We pray that the lyrics and melodies of these songs would fix eyes and hearts and minds on Jesus. We pray that our songs might join the many thousands of songs written through history to encourage the church, and when they have played their role, to make way for the next ones. And we rejoice that one day the only name left standing will be the name of Jesus, as it should be.

SINGAPORE
We live in the most exciting time to be Christians.
There are more professing Christians than at any point in human history, more churches planting, and the Bible is in more languages than at any point in human history.
Yet the challenges are more fierce than at any point and the global church - a great multitude from all tribes and peoples and languages, bound together in Christ - needs more support than ever before. Deep believers need encouragement to sing together of the incomparable riches of His grace.
Since the Sing! conference began we have been investing time and financial resources in ensuring the conference was available in other languages and we have been able to offer travel grants (with free passes) to Christian leaders around the world.
Now through the newly-founded Foundation, we are translating this year’s Sing! Global conference sessions into at least 10 languages (Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish), making them freely available through networks across the globe throughout the fall.
The Getty Music Foundation is a charitable organization with a mission to educate churches, families, and individuals across the globe in a biblical view of theology, artistry, and mission in congregational singing. The Foundation’s ministry activities include training global hymn writers; hosting educational events; translating and distributing audio, video, and written resources; and connecting strategic leaders to the work of deepening Christ-centered corporate worship.
2022 2023 2024
In addition to this, in 2022 we intend to bring over 100 musicians and church leaders from around the world to be part of the conference, to help resource, inspire and learn from the communities from which they came.
Keith and Kristyn Getty established the Getty Music Foundation in 2021 as a global expansion of their vision to equip believers with hymns to carry for life. Through an ever-growing network of like-minded partners, the Foundation seeks to invigorate the next generation of hymn writers and musical leaders, all with the prayerful hope that churches around the world might be increasingly marked by rich theology, timeless artistry, and robust singing.
2023 sees the inaugural International Sing! conference, in addition to the annual event in Nashville. We are planning for these to rotate round the continents in four-year patterns, with 2023 being “Sing! Europe” in Belfast, to which we aim to bring over 100 leaders from many different countries in Europe to be part of the multi-day event.
In 2024 and beyond we also look forward to working in partnership with the Sing! Hymnal to continue our mission to educate the global church with this new opportunity.
The Foundation is registered with the IRS as a non-profit with 501c3 status. Operating with an independent Board and staff, it has a single-minded focus on its charitable mission. The Foundation began with a tithe of royalties and income from the Getty Music Group and now welcomes contributions from all who seek to invest in its exciting and impactful mission.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
- John 3:16-1710 Missional Hymns Every Family and Church Should Know
TOMMY BAILEY, ZACH WHITE, TOM YARBROUGH, KEITH & KRISTYN GETTY | THE VILLAGE CHAPEL, NASHVILLE, TNOne of the key challenges of the Christian life is avoiding the lure of drift. Drift leads to ambiguity and away from the life-giving clarity of mission. No individual, family or local church ever drifted into faithfulness. In his kindness, our Lord sends us out each morning with something to do. Our charge, wherever we are planted, is to make disciples by bearing witness to Christ in the power of his Spirit to the glory of God the Father. Applying that mission to our daily work, play, and rest requires wisdom and creativity. It requires paying attention to the Word of God in the context of the people of God.
In our local churches or in our living rooms, every time we gather to worship, we should be reminded afresh of the treasures of the gospel in Christ. But we don’t stop there. Our task is not complete until the people in our pews or sofas are recommissioned: sent back to offices, schools, and neighborhoods with renewed eagerness to bear witness to the goodness, beauty, and truth of Christ. Missiologist Lesslie Newbigin said it well,
“Only half of the pastor’s work is to gather the people together for worship. The other half is to send them back to their daily tasks equipped to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. If we forget this second part, the other can be positively dangerous.”
Part of our work in the weekly gathering is to consider prayerfully how the songs we sing, the sermons we preach, and the prayers we pray aid in keeping our people on mission and far from the lure of drift. Our gatherings should begin and end with the proper worship of God. We cannot faithfully live on mission without first loving the Mission-Giver. Our worship of God, however, must culminate in a faithful response to his call.
As pastor and prophet, Moses lovingly called the children of Israel back to the clarity of their mission in the great text we call the Shema. Its opening sentence frames the mission of God’s people as a response of love: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart” (Deut 6:4-6). What follows this call to worship is a cascade of imperatives given to shape and concentrate their mission: make disciples by bearing witness whenever you teach, talk, write, and walk. In other words, all of life should be shaped and bound by the mission of God given by the Word of God in the context of the people of God.
Facing A Task Unfinished
Key lyric:
Facing a task unfinished
That drives us to our knees, A need that, undiminished, Rebukes our slothful ease, We who rejoice to know you
Renew before your throne
The solemn pledge we owe you
To go and make you known.
There is perhaps no other classic hymn that more artfully and clearly calls the Church to missional fidelity and joyful evangelism.
Let the Nations Be Glad
Key lyric:
Through the ages gone before, Through the trial and the sword, Many saints and martyrs conquered Though they died. Still we, holding out the cross— Crossing oceans, suffering loss— Shall endure all things
To win the crown of life.
O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing
Key lyric: My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad The honors of your name.
One of the great missional prayers from all of Wesley’s hymns: “...Assist me to proclaim.” May that be the longing of every disciple, family, and church.
Jesus Shall Reign
Key lyric:
People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on his love with sweetest song, And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on his name.
All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name
2 3
This up-tempo song boldly states the reality that obeying Jesus is costly. We may be called to give our lives for the One who gave his life for us. Yet those who have gone before us counted it the ultimate privilege to die for the sake of the gospel.
Key lyric:
Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball
To him all majesty ascribe, And crown him Lord of all.
Missional hymns recalibrate our view of earthly kingdoms. There is only one true Lord over all the nations. Presidents and Prime Ministers come and go. Hymns like this one remind us of the joy that all tribes can find in crowning Jesus as the Lord who reigns with perfect righteousness.
Isaac Watts’ versification of Psalm 72 helps us envision the universal rule of Christ over every people and tongue. Great missional poetry such as this kindles our imaginations, leading to deeper wells of courage and joy.
May the Peoples Praise You
Key lyric:
All the earth is yours and all within; Each harvest is your own. And from your hand we give to You
To make Christ known
This rousing song reminds us that the nations belong to the God who made them. He is the Lord of the harvest. What an encouragement that God is the one who draws sinners to himself!
O Church Arise
4 5 6 7
Key lyric: Our call to war: to love the captive soul, But to rage against the captor; And with the sword that makes the wounded whole, We will fight with faith and valor.
Below are 10 missional hymns that have been a gift to our congregation as we seek to stay faithful to our Lord’s calling.
All People That on Earth Do Dwell (Doxology)
Key lyric:
All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with mirth, his praise forth-tell; Come ye before him and rejoice!
As a call to worship or as a closing hymn, this beautiful text, drawn from Psalm 100, compels God’s people to offer our wholehearted praise to God both in word and deed.
Behold Our God
Key lyric:
Who has held the oceans in his hands?
Who has numbered every grain of sand? Kings and nations tremble at his voice; All creation rises to rejoice.
To remain faithful to the missional call, we must maintain a big view of God. This song lifts our gaze to God’s power and authority over all nations and peoples.
The Lord Almighty Reigns
Key lyric: Certain of that day, Christ we will proclaim. Oh that more would share the prize: Salvation in his name!
Then greater will the anthem ring, A mighty chorus, rising to the king. Missional songs help us keep eternity in view. They broaden our horizons, our perspective. This song beckons us to imagine the final day when all tribes and tongues will sing “Hallelujah” to the Lamb who was slain.

The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
- John 4:23How Every Family and Church Can Pray for the World Each Day
MICHAEL OHFour years ago, when I did my first interview with Keith for Sing!, I mentioned that every Christian has a shared identity: we are part of the global family of God. And every Christian has a shared calling: we are to be about God’s global mission.
What is a critical implication of both truths? We are to be in regular conversation with our Father on behalf of the world.
“Lord, you have promised that the redeemed will come from every tribe, language, people, and nation (Rev 7:9). We long to see that promise become a reality. That is our eternal family. That is our earthly mission. Use us toward that end!”
The Great Commission is a clarion call to each Christian, to our local church families, and to the whole body of Christ. But it is not the only Bible passage that directs our prayers and our actions toward God’s global gospel mission and glory. Those passages flow from Genesis to Revelation.
When we pray, “Hallowed be thy name,” we are praying for the whole earth to worship our God! When we pray,“Thy Kingdom come,” we are praying for the most glorious expressions of God’s grace and beauty in all the earth to become more and more of a reality.
Jesus’ clearest description of his “house” is not about architecture but intercession. He said, “My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations” (Mark 11:17). Tragically, the temple had become a “den of robbers.”
How would someone looking at your family or your church describe it? As a house of… what?
Our aspiration, our calling, is to be a house of prayer for all the nations. What does that look like? And how can we align our family homes and our church homes toward that vision?
By regular, globally broad, informed, and hope-filled prayers.
Operation World is the definitive guide to prayer for the nations. They have both a website (operationworld.org) and a free mobile app. It has been an honor for the movement that I lead, Lausanne (lausanne.org), to partner with OW over the past years. They are in an exciting season as they prepare not only for the 8th edition of OW but for some new digital resources that will equip to Christians to pray such prayers.
Gathering for regular (ideally daily) prayer is not just a goal for every family but a gift the Lord has offered. That gift is only possible because of the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
Globally broad prayers are important not only because they lift our eyes from self-oriented prayers (which the Lord delights to hear as well) to include the world and eternity; globally broad prayers also give us critical perspective on the sufferings of others. That perspective helps us in turn to more deeply appreciate the blessings in our own lives and to show greater compassion to others. Rather than saying, “Thank God I’m not them!” may the Spirit move us both to pray and act in response to the question, “If I had been born into their circumstances, how would I want my family to respond?”
Informed. OW provides context that is critical to understanding, which is critical to strategic prayers. “God, bless the missionaries” and “God, bless those people” are prayers that can surely be used by the Lord. But praying with more knowledge and specificity surely is even better. The information in OW about each nation, along with the prompts for specific prayer needs, were gleaned from real believers on the ground sharing about their circumstances.
And finally, hope-filled. The most wonderful assurance is that God will do what God promises to do. When we pray for God to save the nations and even to use our lives and actions toward that end, we can have confidence that he will do it! We’re on the winning team. We’re praying prayers that will be answered—usually in much more glorious ways that we can even imagine.
My concluding my admonition to you, your family and your church is to pray, but don’t just pray.
Do something about it.
Be the answer to the prayers you pray.
Is there something you can do in addition to your prayers for the nations and peoples you pray for?
You could reach out to people in your city from an ethnic group you have chosen to pray for particularly. You could visit a worship service of a church of the ethnicity or language of the people group for which you have been praying. You could financially support a missionary to a particular nation or people group.
These are just a few ideas and practices that could help your family home and church home to be what Christ would say, with a smile, is a house of prayer for all the nations.

Raising Families and Strengthening Churches in a Tech-Saturated World
ANDY CROUCH
The central words of Israel’s worship life are directly connected to family life:
Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deut 6:4-9)
Even today, observant Jewish families place these very words, written by hand on a small scroll of parchment, in a small case on the doorposts of their homes. The home is the place where worship of the true God starts: the place where we remember and recite God’s Word, and where we learn to respond to God with our heart, soul, strength, and—as Jesus added when he called this the greatest commandment—with our mind as well.
And while it doesn’t say so directly in this text, I believe the very best way to learn to worship, at home or in our churches, is to sing.
Worship is more than singing, of course. But there is something about singing that is fundamental to Jewish and Christian worship— starting with the Psalms, continuing with the hymns that grew out of the early church and the renewal and revival movements of subsequent centuries, and finding new expression in the chants and laments of the fields and cities where even those who had been robbed of dignity by enslavement found ways to sing a new song.
Singing may be the one human activity that most perfectly combines heart, mind, soul, and strength. Almost everything else we do requires at least one of these fundamental human faculties: the heart, the seat of the emotions and the will; the mind, with which we explore and explain the world; the soul, the heart of human dignity and personhood; and strength, our bodies’ ability to bring about change in the world. But singing (and maybe only singing) combines them all.
When we sing in worship, our minds are engaged with the text and what it says about us and God, our hearts are moved and express a range of emotions, our bodily strength is required, and—if we sing with “soul”—we reach down into the depths of our beings to do justice to the joy and heartbreak of human life.
To sing well—not in the sense of singing in perfect tune or like a professional, but in this sense of bringing all our heart, mind, soul, and strength to our singing—is to touch the deepest truths about the world. It is to know wisdom. And it’s also to develop the courage and character to declare that God is this good, that we are this in need of him, that we are this thankful, that we are this committed to be part of his story.
All this would almost have gone without saying in any prior era. But today, our homes and our churches are saturated with a set of human inventions and practices that we call “technology.” And I don’t think it’s any accident that we are, collectively and on the whole, singing less, and singing less well, than human beings, let alone Christians, in any prior era.
The fundamental problem with technology, as far as singing goes, is that it displaces and replaces human effort and skill. Technology is adopted because it seems to do valuable things more efficiently, quickly, and above all effortlessly than human beings can do on their own.
Few human activities have been more disrupted by technology than music. To make music at all, let alone to make it well, requires a great deal of practice, patience, and presence. But to listen to recorded music—the record of someone else’s performance—requires very little of us. I am pretty sure that more music is being played, in the sense of being transmitted through the air into human ears, right now than at any point in history. But I am quite sure there is less music being made, in the sense of being produced by skilled human beings together in a real time and place, than at any point in history.
So there may be music played on speakers and, more likely, in earbuds in most of our homes much of the time. But music is being made in our homes far less often. Just a few generations ago, before our homes were saturated with technology, it was common practice for whole families to make music together—around a piano, a guitar, a fiddle, or just on a front porch with nothing but voices, hands, and feet. To do that today would now seem quaint if not downright embarrassing to many. Yet if the members of the family have put in the time to learn to make music, rather than just spending countless hours with music on in the background, making music is one of the most gloriously rewarding things you can do together as a family.
Almost all our ancestors learned how to do this from their parents and grandparents as a matter of course—but today we learn, at far too early an age, how to simply press play.
We are also singing less in many churches, where the level of amplification and, paradoxically, the musical skill of the amplified musicians often drowns out and crowds out truly congregational song. Even in churches where the people still sing enthusiastically, I am not sure we are singing well, in ways that actually develop heart, soul, mind, and strength. The lyrics we are given are shallower and simpler, as are the tunes and the chord progressions. Melodic ranges are either compressed down to a handful of notes, or extended for emotional effect with octave jumps that only a handful of unusual voices can actually produce. And if I can judge by my travels, we are singing an ever-shrinking repertoire of ever more familiar songs that dominate the worship-music market.
What is at stake in this transition from creation to consumption, from human skill to device-based entertainment? Ultimately it is nothing less than the formation of human beings able to love with heart, soul, mind, and strength. Whenever we turn to technology to displace and replace us, we give up an activity that could have formed us, could have shaped us into someone who has new skill, insight, range, and repertoire to meet the unpredictable and challenging circumstances of life. This kind of formation is what Deuteronomy envisions—day after day, engaging God’s Word and way as we rise up and lie down, leave home and return, becoming the kind of people who have learned to love.
I don’t worry that much about introducing technology into places where it can make human life and labor safer and more efficient—into the factory or office, the hospital or the highway. But I do worry about letting it saturate the most formative environments, the places where we are actually invited—and commanded—to become fully mature persons through diligent practice. And there are simply no more crucial formative environments than the church and the home.
So wise parents, and wise pastors, will dramatically limit the ways that technology replaces shared human effort and skill, and encourage one another and the persons entrusted to our care to set down the devices, take up formative practices, and embrace the hard and beautiful work of becoming people capable of love. And there is probably no better place to start than learning, again, how to truly sing.

TIMELESS STATEMENTS OF BIBLICAL TRUTH
When Christians know what they believe, they can declare God’s truth with clarity and conviction in a confused world. The creeds, confessions, and catechisms written throughout church history are invaluable tools to keep us grounded in God’s Word so that we may “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).
Collecting creeds, confessions, and catechisms from the early church to the post-Reformation era, this new book from Ligonier Ministries helps readers glean biblical wisdom from the past and guard it for future generations. Available now.
