At GEW, we believe in and promote Gender Equality year-round. We believe in building the leaders of tomorrow and that equality begins with economics. Change your money story I was born into poverty. My parents were farmers, and I had eight older siblings. My father was a profoundly spiritual man and very generous. So much so that, as we were the most well-off family in our little village, he would give everything we had away, leaving his own family starving to feed anyone who asked for help.

MAKE THINGS HAPPEN The upside was that we learned to manifest and make things happen for ourselves. The downside was that we grew up malnourished and feeling neglected and undervalued. It helped me, to develop my skills as a life coach in Heist-AanZee in Belgium. When I left home at 18, I saw a bigger picture. I took an apartment in a women-only building and a job in a department store. I would get up early and be at the bus stop at 8:30 to ride the bus for an hour to get to work on time. I worked from 10 am to 10 pm and then walked to the bus station and rode another hour back home to take a shower and eat before collapsing into bed, ready to do it all again the next day.

BE HAPPY ABOUT SPENDING I saw people spending thousands of Bhat on clothes without concern and wondered where they got so much money. I saw nice cars for the first time, and people eating out in cafes and restaurants and spending lavishly and being happy about it. After a while, I took a different job in a cafe restaurant and saw how the customers would adorn their lei with 1000-Baht bills to give to the singing girls, and how they would make more in one evening than I would make all year.

SEE YOUR OWN WORTH I saw them as beautiful, talented, and deserving. I thought I was ugly, undeserving. When the restaurant owners said I should be on the stage because I was pretty, I thought they were trying to seduce me and didn’t believe them. I saw money as something for other people, not for me. I thought I wasn’t enough and didn’t deserve it. But because I had learned to manifest things as a child, I told myself that even if I wasn’t pretty or deserving in that way, I could cook, and I was a joyful, warm person, and I started my restaurant. As people began to come to see me and give me tips as a cook, and were happy to see me, and that money brought me good food and water, and nicer things, I started to see my body differently, and talented too.

APPRECIATE YOUR BODY I started to see my beautiful body as a work of art given to me by the gods and to appreciate it. The more I enjoyed my body, the more I saw my beauty, and I became more beautiful. And the more I appreciated what I had, the more tips and more money I received. The 3 Reasons You Don't Have Money #1 FREEZE You dream of having money but you don’t dare to take action towards your dreams, because you are afraid of both having and of not having money, and so you are paralysed, unable to move towards or away from it. That leaves you at the mercy of other people’s desires and goals, the economy, anything that acts on your finances externally. When you do get money you are afraid to do anything with it, scared that it will evaporate before your very eyes. You are afraid to ask for your true worth because you don’t think anyone will pay your price, and you are simultaneously terrified of running out of money and being destitute. Too many of them miss this step, and really suffer because of it: If they have a starving crowd that wants their service (and is willing to pay), and they have the skills to deliver a result, but it is not a stimulating passion for the expert, it is not viable. It causes fatigue and burnout.

Typically, they don’t have a structure or a script, they are afraid to help people connect emotionally with the problem, and as a result, miss significant opportunities to serve more clients. When you ask powerful questions like that, be prepared for the positive improvements that will come your way.

THE QUALITY OF YOUR QUESTIONS IMPACTS ON THE QUALITY OF YOUR LIFE One thing that is ESSENTIAL for success in business and in life, no matter what stage you are at, is managing your thoughts. What you think about expands. If you are not consciously taking control of your stories and your thinking, your subconscious mind will likely default to negativity, problems or fears. And, with so many external forces around us, it is easy to get bombarded and lost in the messaging and agenda of others (which probably doesn’t have your best interests as their first priority). One of the quickest and most powerful ways to take control of

PAGE 13 your thoughts, is by changing the habitual questions you ask of yourself.

When you ask a new question, you get a new answer, which leads to new actions, and new results. Or as one of my mentors, Keith Cunningham, says: "Smart people have great answers, Geniuses have great questions."

2. What requests haven’t I made yet, that if I did, would transform my life beyond my wildest dreams? I made requests of these amazing experts to speak to me for a podcast. Some of them charge $60k per day, or $10k per hour, and they shared their wisdom for free with me, because I asked, and because I promised to let others listen in too.

For a number of years, I became fascinated by understanding, what were the questions or thinking of leading experts in business and life. So, I hunted down the most successful people and asked them: "What is one question that you have asked that has had the biggest positive impact on your results or the results of your clients?" What I discovered has been massively impactful for the results in my life, and also that of anyone who listened to these interviews that I shared on my podcast: Life Changing Questions, which you can listen to on Apple Podcasts. It is amazing to hear the insights and thinking of NYT best selling authors, presidential advisors, Harvard Business School Psychologists, Experts in Selling and so on.

FAVOURITE QUESTIONS

Who do you need to make a request of? 3. What one thing, if I did it now, would have the biggest positive impact on my results? This is my favorite to help get myself and my clients totally focussed. Whatever the answer to this question is, that is what you need to focus on now.

LIVE YOUR TRUTH I have two daughters, and a beautiful wife, and I live my life in service of them. I tell my daughters that they can "be, do and have whatever they focus their minds on." They have my full support to pursue what they find important to them.

Some of my favorite questions are

A woman living in her truth and able to express herself freely is a gift to the world.

1. How can I best serve? Since, if we use our skills to the highest advantage of others, we are going to be very purposeful in life, and feel totally fulfilled.

I believe that the world will be a much better place when we have more women, standing in their true power—this would serve humanity at the highest level.

I also have the privilege of serving many female business owners and leaders in my work.

I am reminded of the quote: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”

BRAND STORIES What they are, why you need them, and how much is TMI? It seems everyone is talking about the importance of storytelling in sales lately, which leads to a lot of oversharing of personal information. What's an introvert to do? How much does your audience need to know about you when creating and sharing those allimportant brand stories?

WHAT IS A BRAND STORY? First. let's get one thing straight. Despite the current hoopla about origin stories and the mad rush of seemingly every CEO to share their hard-luck backstories, your brand story doesn't have to be about you. Brand stories are narratives that connect the audience with the values and purpose of the company. And while the brand origin story may well include details of the founders' lives, it's more important to make sure the

IMAGES MATTER, BUT NOT HOW YOU THINK My sister Dawn is a photographer, so when I needed a headshot for my author profile, so we arranged a photo shoot. Unfortunately, when the day came, the weather was lousy, and so was the lighting. The backdrops she had ordered came with creases in them and weren't suitable to iron, and pulling them taught on the frame didn't do the trick either as they started to tear. So, after an hour or so trying to set up a half-decent staging, we gave it up as a bad job. But we decided to do the shoot anyway, just for practice.

We had fun, took some photos, and called it a day, planning to do another shoot at a later date. Then Dawn sent me the snapshots of the day. In among them was one that with a little photoshopping was suitable for my author profile. And a dozen more that were simply hilarious. We never did get around to that second photoshoot, and then Alan and I moved to Greece. Now, I know these photos are far from perfect. Many of them, I would rather no one ever saw. And yet, here I am, sharing them voluntarily in the name of storytelling. Why? Because storytelling is all about expression and emotion. The images you use, however perfect, will leave viewers cold if the models you use are stiff and disinterested. Sometimes, you just have to get over yourself and share. Often, it's the candid shots that make you cringe that other people respond to and love the most.

GEW MAGAZINE| ISSUE 3, 2022 narrative establishes the pressing need for the business to exist from the clients' perspective. The reason to talk about the challenges you overcame is to show clients with similar issues that you can show them how to do the same. So if a challenge doesn't directly relate to the business, there's no need to share it. In fact, the best brand stories are those that make the clients, not the company, the hero. That's why a well-told case study or testimonial can be your most powerful brand story.

WHY YOU NEED BRAND STORIES Humans are hard-wired to respond to storytelling as a shortcut to learning. To count as a story, your narrative requires a character with a goal and a problem. It also needs a series of actions that lead to the problem's eventual resolution through rising and falling action, or conflict. When we hear a story, we mentally project ourselves into the protagonists' shoes to see how it feels. That's how we're able to learn from others' experience instead of having to make every mistake ourselves.

PAGE 16 Your brand stories, then, need to portray people your clients will relate to. Whether that's you when you were in their shoes, or current clients who are where they want to be, you need to: Have a strong opening hook that calls out your target audience. Bonus points if it repels everyone else. Introduce a character in the same position as them, with a similar goal. Introduce an obstacle preventing your character from reaching their goal. Show a series of failed attempts to solve the problem or partial solutions. Frame your business as the final answer to the problem. Show the character having reached their goal, thanks to your business. Brand stories that feature the founder or key company players don't need to retell your childhood or share intimate details unless that's part of your business model. If you're helping people overcome childhood trauma, sure, you're going to need to talk about that. If, on the other hand, you coach in

career development, it's okay to start your brand origin story with your early career, or even a mid-life career change.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH INFORMATION?

The introverts like me among you will be glad to know that you don't have to share anything you're not comfortable sharing. While it's true there's a shift towards "radical transparency" in business, there's a corresponding move towards privacy rights. So long as you are open and honest about things that relate to your business, there's no mandate that says you HAVE to share details of your personal life. As for how much is too much? Before oversharing, asking "Will this help my client move towards their goal?" is always a good tule of thumb.

Now, when the protagonist is a successful CEO or expert, sometimes it's hard for beginners and potential clients to make that connection. Hence the proliferation of rags-to-riches backstories. These stories often start out relatively tame and grow ever more extravagant as the teller climbs the ladder of success. WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO ACHEVE? Think about what you are trying to achieve first so that you can frame your story in a way that makes your desired outcomes most likely. Don't create content for the sake of it.

WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE? Once you know what you're trying to achieve, think about who you need to serve for that to happen? This will help you define your story's main character or protagonist. The more like your audience they are, the better.

WHAT IS THEIR GOAL? Once you know who you are talking to, figure out what they are trying to achieve, and make that the goal of the story character.

WHAT IS THEIR PROBLEM? Now you know the goal, list all the things that prevent your clients from reaching it. Then choose the single most important, urgent, or painful issue, and write your story around that.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS ALONG THE WAY?

Make a list of the milestones, missteps and mini breakthroughs your clients experience on the way to solving their problems. These will become the high and low points of your story.

Don't put pressure on yourself to tell a polished story the first time. Just get everything down on paper without worrying about how good it sounds. As I always tell my students, "that's what editing is for."

Tempting as it may be to write it up and share it, give your story room to breathe. After you've written the first draft, take some time away from it, and come back with fresh eyes later. This applies to everything from a tweet or a text and up. Better to send a bit later than with errors.

Think about the emotions your client has at each stage of the journey. Describe what those emotions look like. Not just the physiology, but the thought patterns, the choices and actions the emotions lead to, and the mistakes people make because of them. This is what editors mean when they say, "Show, don't tell." Use visuals that portray those emotions.

Yes, it's okay to blurt out your first thoughts to get the raw story down and to use flowery language when you are describing the emotions and actions of your story. But before you send it out into the world, you'll want to give it a bit of a tidy up. You can use software like Grammarly or Pro Writing Aid to spell and grammar check your writing, and to get into shape style-wise, too.

None of us can see past our own blind spots. Build a second pair of eyes into your workflow so that nothing goes out without being proofread by someone other than the author.
