WELCOME TO GEW MAGAZINE
At GEW, we are occasionally accused of having too much fun for a serious women's empowerment organisation. And while in general, we say "Boo-Yah" to that, this issue's featured guest article is no laughing matter. Isabell Rodriguez is a powerhouse confidence coach with a valuable story to share, which, as a survivor of both childhood and marital abuse myself, I am only too familiar with. The victim of not one but two abusers during her childhood, Isabell's slide into drug and alcohol abuse, bipolar disorder and bulimia are sadly far from unique. That's why. Along with sharing her advice on rebuilding confidence and identity after abuse, we have included a list of women's helplines. If you know of a women's helpline that isn't on the list, please share it with us in the GEW Community Facebook group to add it to the list, which will be included in the online directory very soon.

THE MAGIC OF TANTRA MEDITATION by Jang Pimvisat
I grew up with Buddhist parents, and my father has always meditated for an hour every morning and an hour at night. So I learned meditation and spiritual practices early on, ideal for stress reduction. When I left home at 18, I spent three months living in a very famous Buddhist temple as a practicing nun, meditating 10 hours every night from 7pm to 5am. In that time, I learned to reach the highest states of Vipassana (enlightenment) through meditation. But when I left the temple and started working 12 hours a day, life quickly intruded on my meditation practices.
It’s one thing to reach Vipassana in tranquil surroundings with beautiful gardens and soothing sounds, and everyone around you also engaged in meditation and spiritual seeking. It’s quite another to try to meditate for even an hour a day when you are surrounded by the noise of the city, traffic, screaming children and arguing couples, with all the strife and discord of so many people living disengaged lives assaulting your senses 24-hours a day.

Instead of spending 10 hours a night to reach a state of bliss beyond anything you can imagine until you experience it, my Tantra master would take me there in less than an hour. And in time, I learned to do that for myself, and then for others.
BENEFITS OF MEDITATION The benefits of meditation are well established by now. Stress reduction, increased mindfulness and ability to focus on the present. Increasing selfawareness, selfregulation and acceptance of others. Reduction of negative thoughts, anger, and conflict. Reducing blood pressure and the incidence of stress-related illness. These are just some of the advantages of regular meditation.
POVERTY NOT NECESSARY But when we talk about Tantric or other spiritual meditation, there’s a perception of discipline taken to extremes, of hardship and deliberate discomfort. The image endures of the Buddhist monk sitting crosslegged on stony ground for
PAGE 4 hours on end, oblivious to buzzing flies while chasing enlightenment. This image itself gives rise to an element of stress around meditation. New initiates ask, “Am I doing it right?” “How long does it take to get into a meditative state?” “How deep do I have to go?” and countless other performance-related questions.
CLEAR THE MIND These questions can become so all-consuming, that people who know the benefits of mediation and want to try it often never even get started for fear of doing it wrong. Even more who try are quickly discouraged because when they first sit down and try to calm and clear the mind, they are horrified to realise their brains are running at full tilt, unable to turn off the never-ending stream of conscious thought invading their peace. They quickly realise that staying in the present is much more difficult than they imagined, and in fact quite impossible, when they are constantly caught up with replaying the past and worrying about the future.

PAGE 5 repeating patterns of self-sabotage and stagnating. They waste more and more time, money and energy trying to find the magic bullet or quick-fix system that will magically solve all their problems, little knowing they just turned their back on the very thing they are searching for, if only they had a better understanding of what meditation really is and how to do it effectively. If this is you, and you either want to try meditation or have tried and struggled to let go, I’m here to tell you things need to change and it doesn’t have to be this way.
TRANSFORM YOUR MEDITATION EXPERIENCE What if I told you there are a few simple secrets that are all you need to transform your experience of meditation from a near torturous exercise into an effective, powerful and magical one? And I will show you exactly how to do just that! I have used Magical Tantric Meditation daily for the last 12 years. It has helped me to achieve deep levels of Vipassana (enlightened) states and has changed my life. It has allowed me to create an amazing happy mind and joyful life. You are at the right place at the right time to become a happy mind and create your happy life with lots of joy, pleasure, gratitude and the abundance you always deserved.
BEGIN YOUR VIPASSANA MEDITATION PRACTICE TODAY Why start with Vipassana? Because the goal of Vipassana is to learn to accept reality as it is, without judgement. That includes accepting your own flaws and failures, and letting go of attempting to 'fix' yourself or do your meditation 'right.' I advise beginning with this mindfulness and awareness approach rather than a visualisation or pranayama meditation, where the goal is to hone a skill or manifest your future. That way, you take a lot of pressure off yourself to achieve some level of performance at the outset. Your only goal is to observe, acknowledge, accept, and release whatever comes to mind during the exercise. So, let's have a look at how you can get started with your own Vipassana practice this evening.

A Beginner's Guide to Vipassana Mediation This evening, before you go to bed, and then again tomorrow morning, take a few minutes to practice Vipassana mediation. If you can, choose a quiet place where you won't be disturbed, and make this your meditation spot. If you can't find a quiet spot, minimise distractions as best you can. If you can, sit cross legged on the floor, great. If not, it's okay to sit on a cushion, in a chair, or even to lie in bed. What matters is that you get comfortable enough to do the exercise. Straighten your back, engage your core muscles, and relax your neck and shoulders. Close your eyes and breathe naturally. remember, we're not trying to change or correct anything here, we're
simply checking in and observing what's going on in our bodies.
Continue this exercise until one of the following happens:
Notice how your breath feels on the inhale and exhale. Notice whether you are breathing from the top of your lungs or the diaphragm without attempting to change it. Notice the rhythm or your breath, and the rise and fall of your belly or chest without judgement.
You fall asleep. This is common in the early stages, especially at night and if you are lying down, and is perfectly okay. You reach your time limit. This might be five or ten minutes to begin with, building up to twenty minutes. You become too uncomfortable to continue.
Understand that in these few moments you have nothing to do other than observe, acknowledge, accept and release whatever comes into your mind. Focus on your breath. When thoughts arise, let them come without becoming attached to them. Simply thank your unconscious for bringing this thought to you, and let the thought float away. Then return your focus to your breath.
If you feel judgement of frustration rising, remind yourself the only purpose of the exercise is to accept reality as it is. If you want to learn meditation techniques, you can join me for regular live online guided meditation sessions.

Isabell Rodriguez is Scandinavia's Top Transformational Mindset Coach, Millionaire Mastermind Retreat Creator, International Speaker, voice-over actress, and Best-Selling Author. "Say Something," the movie about her life growing up as a victim of domestic violence, won the “Kristallen Award" for best documentary 2017. Isabell dedicates her life to helping and motivating women all over the world move from being in pain to living in their power. Her courage in sharing her story helped change the law in Sweden. Isabell lost her father in a car crash at the age of two. She was sexually abused and neglected aged five. Between 11 and 15 she suffered physical, mental, emotional, and sexual abuse from her stepfather. Although her mother eventually escaped and saught refuge in a women’s shelter, Isabell's traumas led her into a downward spiral of self-destructive behaviours, insecurities, self-hate, and low self-esteem. Following in her mother's footsteps, she fell for a man who verbally, physically, and sexually assaulted her when she was only 15 years old. For years she ran from her emotions, using alcohol and drugs, and blaming the world for her struggles. Until at age 19, she woke up in a hospital, having overdosed on drugs after a psychotic break. It was her thrid and final suicide attempt. Hearing the doctor say, "It's a miracle she's alive. She should have died," was her wake-up call. She decided to rebuild her life, and her journey of healing began. Now, she is a happily married new mother. She has found her place and purpose in the world and lives to support other women to find their place, by breaking free from their past, healing their traumas, releasing limiting beliefs, and living a happy and fulfilling life. Isabell is the founder of the "Rebuild Your Life Program", and "Mastering The Feminine Power" Mastermind Retreat. She coaches women all over the world, helping them to reprogram their paradigm, and to live in their full potential.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE
All photographs in this article supplied by Ms Rodriguez
Isabell Rodriguez, Scandinavia's #1 Confidence Coach on rebuilding confidence after trauma and abuse. There's plenty of talk about women who die from domestic abuse these days. But we don't often hear about the aftereffects when women finally escape that or the effects on children of violent families. My father died when I was fourteen months old, and I was sexually abused by my mothers' boyfriend's son when I was five, and then again by my stepfather between eleven and fifteen.
That took its toll on me. I had no confidence and low self-esteem. I started drinking and developed bulimia. I spent much time trying to escape my emotions and ended up in a relationship at fifteen with my first boyfriend, who raped and abused me. I was following my mother's path. Then, when I was 19, I woke up in the hospital after a psychosis caused by taking too many drugs.
WE DON'T OFTEN HEAR ABOUT THE AFTEREFFECTS WHEN WOMEN FINALLY ESCAPE THAT OR THE EFFECTS ON CHILDREN OF VIOLENT FAMILIES.
The doctor told me, "You're nineteen; you have your whole life ahead of you; what are you doing?"

GEW MAGAZINE| ISSUE 4, 2022 I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at that point and began my healing journey. I told my mom I had to get out and left for Norway, a neighbouring country. I met a girl on the train who became my roommate, and we both got the same job. I started learning, got my first coach, and changed things for myself. In 2014 Åsa Ekman directed a Film and Tell documentary about my life as a child survivor of violence, called Say Something, which won the Kristallen award 2017, the official Swedish television award for best documentary. Because of that, I was able to speak with politicians about my experience of violence and abuse from a child's perspective and was instrumental in helping to make domestic violence in the presence of children a crime in Sweden. It took a long time, but I no longer identify as bi-polar. I think now that I went through some things that left me with a lot of
PAGE 10 emotional issues, And now I spend my time reaching out to others who have been or are in that same position to give them the hope and support they need to work through that long recovery process.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE I first want anyone in a similar position to be that you are not alone. Growing up, I felt isolated and ashamed, and I didn't know what to do with my emotions. It was only when I realised how many other women were in the same situation and that my story could help somebody else that things changed.
There is a way out, and there is so much help along the way. Your life doesn't have to stay the way it is now. There is often so much fear that women feel paralysed. But you will be amazed at how the people around you, and your children, change when they see Cast and crew of "Say Something" you start to change. receiving the Kristallen Award 2017.

SPEAK UP If you are in a violent or abusive relationship or situation, speak up. Abusers rely on their victim's silence. Find out where the nearest women's shelter is, or speak to the people around you. Find someone you can talk to and start that healing process. There's a long journey ahead. It's common for women who have been in an abusive relationship to have lost their sense of identity because they have been suppressed for so long. Get a coach and help answer the question, "Who am I?"
WAKE UP After abuse, we are often our own worst enemy and harshest critic. I had a small, mean voice in my head telling me that I wasn't good enough, criticising how I looked, to the point I couldn't even look at myself in a mirror. Becoming aware of your routines and habits and how you speak about yourself and other people can help tremendously in making the changes you need to make to become the person you want to be.
BUILD UP Although the aftereffects of abuse manifest in many different ways, there are repeating patterns. I developed eating disorders, first anorexia, then bulimia, trying to exert some control over my life. I used alcohol and drugs to selfmedicate and avoid dealing with my emotions. And I looked for love in all the wrong places outside of myself because I didn't
PAGE 11 know how to love myself. I didn't have that strong foundation of coming from a secure childhood. I never learned to love and trust myself. These are things I see in many of my clients. They are mistreating themselves, self-sabotaging and not believing in themselves. They want to change everything about themselves to feel better, but it doesn't work that way. We can't live from the outside in. We have to live from the inside out. All those things on the outside keep you distracted from what's going on inside. You can't change somebody else. You can't control anyone else's behaviour or how they think. You can only change yourself. But if you learn to focus on your strengths and play to who you are and change how you feel about yourself, people will respond to that, and you will go far.
STEP UP When I first got out of the abusive situation, I was so angry at the world that I couldn't see the good in anyone, including myself. I started to think I was not worthy and living out that belief. I was pushing everybody away, including myself. Eventually, I understood that other people couldn't make me feel bad unless I gave them that power and decided to take responsibility for becoming whom I wanted to be. Finding your strengths can feel impossible when you're in that dark place. You need to train your mind to become that person. One of the easiest ways to do

PAGE 12
that is to act as if you were that person.
SELF-IDENTITY EXERCISE Try the following exercise. Think about the person you want to be. If you can't think of any, think of someone you admire and want to be like. Take a piece of paper and list the character traits you want to have. What is it about this person you admire? Write that down. Watch people who have that characteristic. How does it manifest? How do they behave? Practice modelling their behaviour and acting as if you had that character trait. It stops being an act when you do this for long enough, and you acquire that character trait. I used to have a list of characteristics I wanted in my perfect man. I named him Chris, and he was supposed to be Australian.
to be a great dancer, find a great dancer and model what they do. Find a dance teacher, and practice dancing.
Then I looked at my list and had another wake-up call. I didn't want him to be a smoker, drinker, or take drugs. Yet I was smoking, drinking and partying all the time. The list didn't match who I was. I looked at it and thought, "This guy wouldn't want to be with me. Whom do I need to become to attract that person?"
If you want to be a great speaker, Get yourself a coach, get yourself a speech, and practice that speech. Get up on stage and do it. If you freeze, you freeze; if you puke, you puke, but you do it. It doesn't matter if it's terrible. If it's horrible, that's great because you grow the most when you're out of your comfort zone.
That applies to anything. If you want a specific job, think about the person they are looking for and what you need to become to attract that.
HAVE A POWERFUL GOAL
It's all about training. If you want
Having a driving purpose will help you power through your discomfort. I wanted to empower
women and the best way to do that was to be a speaker; I didn't want to. I was terrified of the thought of getting up on stage. But if I wanted to help those women, there were things I had to do to become the person who could help them.
SAY YES When something new comes up that I don't know how to do, I say to my husband, "I can't believe I have to do that. I can't do that." He will ask me, "Well, why can't you? What is it you need to learn to be able to?" When you get an opportunity to try something new, say yes, and then go and learn what you need

to know. Don't wait until you know everything about something to try it. That's not how learning works.
going to become whom you were meant to be. You're not going to get out there and do what you can.
That's how you build confidence. You can't go out and buy it. You have to go through it and build it by being uncomfortable.
We're raised in a society that tells us to go to school, get a job, buy a house and a car, and that's it. But there is so much more out there that you can fill yourself with if you take a chance.
DON'T TRY TO GO IT ALONE My biggest lesson learned has been not to be so stubborn and not try to do everything on my own. After abuse, it's common to have trust issues. I didn't trust anyone and didn't want to rely on anyone, so being independent was vitally important. But I thought that meant I had to do everything alone. I didn't want a husband. I built my company on my own. But you can be independent and be around other people. We evolved as social animals and survived because we are stronger together. I spent years pushing everyone away and insisting on doing everything myself. It was only when I started accepting and even asking for help and understood that I don't always have it together and don't have to that my life started to change. Going it alone can feel safer than asking for help or trusting someone, but you only know what you know. You don't know what you don't know. And if you're not hungry for knowledge and thirsting for growth, you will end up trapped in your box. And that's dangerous because you're not
Playing it safe is okay for some people, but most people are not fulfilled with that. My mastermind retreats would never have been created if I had insisted on working alone. I always collaborate with incredible speakers worldwide who teach women to go to the next level. My husband was running retreats around the world, and we were travelling a lot to deliver them until I suggested we run them in Costa Rica, where we live and started having people come to us. But I realised that many women coming to the retreats were holding back. Because many of them had had trauma with men, and do, they were not willing or able to let go and share their vulnerability surrounded by powerful men. So I decided to create a safe space for women entrepreneurs to come together and heal, grow and learn from global experts. I wanted to create a community of like-minded women. SO, we have fifteen women come together, eating healthy, doing exercises, yoga and meditation etc. But we also have our network. So as well as connecting with the women on the retreat,
those networks. We have had people leaving the retreats becoming authors, speakers, connecting with musicians to collaborate with, and so on. It's so beautiful to see, after the retreats, how far those women come from the growth that starts on them.
BE THE RAIN ON THE WATER I had the drive and passion for wanting to help other women. But it's not only the people I coach and who saw my movie who have benefitted. When I started to change, the people around me began to change, like my mother. It's like the rain on water. You don't change in isolation. Your growth helps those around you, and those around you help you. The retreats we have now have evolved over the years through collaborations with some incredible women. Now, they're a lot more thought through. We're taking them to the states this year. That isn't happen because of me working alone. It happened because I had an idea that flourished from working with others.
ACCEPT YOURSELF Of course, there's a selfish element to wanting to empower other women. Nothing fires me up more than watching someone who has gone through that abuse and suffering start to heal and change and accept themselves for who they are. There's an element of pride in being able to bring about that change.
YOUR REGULAR DOSE OF EMPOWERMENT | WWW.GEWMAGAZINE.COM
GEW MAGAZINE| ISSUE 4, 2022 For me, empowerment really is also about acceptance. You have to accept yourself without judgement. That doesn't mean you don't want to become better. It means you say, "This is my strength, this is my weakness, and this is what I want to focus on." No matter what you have done in
PAGE 14 the past, you can always flourish into the person you were meant to become. You have that power, no matter what your parents or the person who broke you down told you. My inner saboteur still tells me, "I'm not good enough; I can't do this." But I choose not to spend my life listening to that and
decide to focus instead on who and what I need to become to achieve my goals. We all struggle at times. We all still have our darkness inside of us. Just know that this too shall pass, and don't be so hard on yourself. Love yourself, accept yourself, and learn from the best.

DO YOU NEED TO WRITE A BOOK?
Gail Seymour, Your Fairy Book Mother, on when it's the right time to publish. Photograph of Ms Seymour by Dawn Louise Howson "Publish or Perish" may be true in some industries, but if Elon Musk can get by without a book, the chances are good you can, too. Writing a book is a serious undertaking, so unless you have a job where publishing is part of your contract, it's not the best idea to embark on a book project under duress.
very low cost, with minimal editing and a semi-professional cover. You can even publish for free if you're only putting out digital and print-on-demand editions in a pinch. Realistically, though, if you want to put out a professional product, I tell my clients to budget around 10,000. That will get you multiple rounds of editing, a professional cover and interior layout, and enough advertising to push the boat out on launch (though not very far.)
take a "publish and run" approach and then live off the royalties from book sales, you may be in for a disappointment. The money a book generates for its author mostly comes from sources other than book sales. Two clients spring to mind here.
One, a Medical Doctor turned realestate investor, worked with me to write his first book on wealth generation and investment. WHAT'S THE UPSIDE?

GEW MAGAZINE| ISSUE 4, 2022 He is now five books in and has landed several lucrative jobs on the strength of his authorship. The point is, being an author opens doors. It can help get media attention, land speaking gigs, and raise your profile like other media rarely do Then, of course, there's the personal growth. Over 80 per cent of people polled in a US survey said they wanted to write a book, but less than 3 per cent ever do. Writing a book is difficult. That's why it changes you.
WHEN'S THE BEST TIME TO WRITE A BOOK? Occasionally, I talk to a potential client who tells me they want to write a book, but they plan to come back to it later in life. Believe me, I hear you. I told my sixth-form teacher when I was eighteen that writing was something I would come back to later when I had more experience.
PAGE 17 before then, or that you might not make it to retirement age. Morbid? Maybe, but how many people do you know who were cut down in their prime? The other thing is that if you wait until you know everything there is to know about a subject, two things happen: 1. You constantly find new things you don't know to learn and convince yourself you're not ready yet. 2. You forget what it was like not to know what you know and lose the ability to explain it in simple terms. So, the best time to write a book is now. Why? Because if you're thinking about it, it will keep haunting you until you do. The time you spend procrastinating will pass anyway, and the sooner you start, the sooner you finish. And the feeling of accomplishment you get at the end will make it all worthwhile.
WHAT KIND OF BOOK SHOULD YOU WRITE?
There are two main types of book you might want to write: a knowledge book or a memoir. Knowledge books are ideal if you have a proprietary system or formula or a message to share. Memoirs are great if you have an interesting background and have overcome a challenge others struggle with. That doesn't mean you can't write a book if neither applies to you. If you're a coach, you could collect success stories from people you have helped or people who have overcome the problem you want to help others solve. Or you could interview experts in your industry for a 'state of the nation' type book. This can be a fantastic way to network and help with book sales and launch visibility if everyone involved promotes the book. Although, fair warning, many won't. This leads me to the final topic: how to become an author if you don't have the time, talent, or inclination to write an entire book on your own.
I didn't write my first novel until I was in my mid-thirties, and my first nonfiction book just after I turned forty, because I didn't think I knew anything well enough to be the expert at it. If that's you, there are two things to consider. This isn't me trying to persuade you to start now. I just don't want you to waste years and end up wishing you'd done it sooner, or worse still never get it done. That's the first thing: Tomorrow is not guaranteed. If you think you're going to write a memoir in your retirement, there's always the chance your memory will fail YOUR REGULAR DOSE OF EMPOWERMENT | WWW.GEWMAGAZINE.COM

AUTHOR SHORTCUTS If you think the only legitimate way to become an author is to sit down at your desk and bang out a few thousand words unaided, this will sound like cheating. But what matters is getting your original thoughts into print, not the way it gets there.
1
TALK IT OUT
2
HIRE A GHOSTWRITER
3
The first thing you can do to get all those words out of your head and into your first draft is to record yourself talking about your subject and get the recording transcribed. There's no law anywhere that says you have to type.
As a ghostwriter myself, I'm here to tell you that hiring someone else to take the words as they fall out of your mouth and tidy them up a bit isn't cheating. A ghostwriter's job is to organise your thoughts and ideas into a structure and flow that makes sense as a book. That doesn't make the ideas and content any less yours.
USE EXISTING RESOURCES

CO-AUTHOR A BOOK

INTERVIEW OTHERS
TAKE A GUIDED PUBLISHING COURSE If you want to be the one to do the writing but don't want to get lost in the weeds along the way, you can take a guided publishing course. Courses like the POWER Author Diploma at www.PowerAuthorProgam.com, include several rounds of editing, cover design and publishing accounts set-up, and tuition. So, although they may seem pricey at first, they can help you keep publishing costs down.

5
HIRE AN AUTHOR COACH There are coaches (myself included) who will work with you specifically on your writing. A coach won't do the work for you, but they will help you figure out your next best steps and keep you on track.

9
Chances are, you already have a lot of material you can use in your book. Some people turn their blogs into books. Others use existing training materials, journals etc. The point is, you don't have to start with a blacnk page.
You don't have to come up with all of the content yourself. You can co-author a book with another writer and split the workload.
We've already mentioned this, but you could interview clients for a case-study compilation, or experts for a roundup of your industry.
HAVE GUEST AUTHORS You could even have experts write their chapters. That makes your job as the author much easier because all you need to do is provide the introduction and conclusion, and a commentary on each chapter.
BE A GUEST AUTHOR You don't even have to be the lead author in a book to claim the author title. You could simply write a guest chapter for someone else's book and let them do the bulk of the work. Okay, so the kudos isn't quite the same, but you can still say you're an author this way.
