AHEAD IN ANIMAL HEALTH
Serious Interdigital phlegmona (IP) problems M. Holzhauer Royal GD, Deventer, The Netherlands
Introduction • IP normally infection of young cows/heifers (Fusobacterium n’forum) and some other • Sudden onset and painful • Traditional good reaction on treatment (tetra) Aim of this poster
Results
In our region IP an increasing problem: • Higher incidence (normal 8-12% per year) • Regular worse – no reaction on treatment and euthanasia (sometimes >10% of cases in a herd)
• Worse reaction on usual therapy (tetracycline and penicillin), also by prompt intervention • Alternative therapy: tylosin (pract. exp.) • Some times related to no prompt intervention • Hygiene in herds variable, not per definition worse • Recognised by practitioners over the whole country • No influence of pasturing • Probably seasonal influence (more in housing period)
Material and methods • >20 herds visited with serious problems - no reaction on therapy - more cows euthanasia - very painful and inflammation of complete lower leg • Hygiene status good to worse • Heifers and higher parities • Recurrences of individual cows
Discussion • Other countries same experience? • USA recognized as “super foul”, but means that other (sub-) species of bacteria or toxins? • Further investigation: - more diagnostics: cultivation/PCR - case control study: skin resistance or infection pressure - other suggestions?
