ore than 40 years ago, we started brokering exclusive residential real estate from a villa in Hamburg’s upscale Elbvororte district. As a company, we can look back on many crucial milestones since

that time, including opening our first offices abroad in Mallor-

his city was once the most powerful in ancient Greece: the cradle of democracy and the birthplace of drama and western civilization.

Today, perhaps more than ever, Athens boasts a rich cultural mix. Young Athenians in particular are opening pop-up stores and restaurants in trendy neighborhoods like Chalandri, or are coming together to form artists’ collectives. Others are restoring dilapidated buildings in the streets of Pangrati, Kypseli and Keramikos to turn them into stylish hotels.

The resurrection of Greece’s largest city, which at less than 39 square kilometers is a relatively small metropolis, has attracted creatives and digital nomads from all over the world.

They throng the streets of the hip Gazi and Psiri districts, where graffiti-adorned, cracked facades invite visitors to admire the street art during the day. In the evening, strains of relaxing music waft out of the open doors of the bars and clubs.

The in-crowd likes to congregate at the Breeder Gallery, which exhibits timeless pieces by up-and-coming artists, or in the unassuming courtyard of The Art Foundation (TAF), with its bar, gallery and small designer shops. On Sundays, the Monastiraki flea market is held in the streets outside TAF, a must in the social calendars of many young Athenians. The Central Market, where even restauranteurs go to buy their produce, is also well worth wandering through.

Wherever you look, you see new, vibrant activities taking place within the historical walls of the ancient city. A squat on Riga Palmidou, for instance, now houses the Embrós theater (embrós means “forward”). It’s a well-known venue among members of the Athenian underground. Here, independent theater groups often perform comedies about the Greek financial crisis. But despite these contemporary t­ransformations, the best thing about Athens is

still its history, which dates back millennia.

At the Syntagma Square station, visitors can admire skeletons and artifacts from Classical times, discovered during excavations when the metro was built. A few streets away, the family-owned delicatessen Kostarelos prepares and serves feta cheese – a very popular Greek food – in the traditional way.

At the foot of the Acropolis lies a hidden gem: The scenic Anafiotika neighborhood with its white-washed houses is an oasis of calm. Its stone steps and blue shutters were built by migrants from the Cyclades island of Anafi in the 19th century. A short walk away is the Acropolis Museum, a contemporary building designed by architect Bernard Tschumi. It houses archeological finds as well as temporary exhibitions.

Close by, on Dionysiou Areopagitou, Athens’ most famous pedestrian street, you’ll find the luxurious boutique hotel AthensWas, with its classically furnished suites.

The Sense, a chic restaurant on the top floor of the hotel, has a stunning roof terrace that is very popular with the city’s in-crowd.

Here, you can sip wine and enjoy creative Greek dishes, for example orzo pasta, while admiring the unique view of the Parthenon and the Acropolis hill.

When the pandemic struck, he turned the crisis into a brand-new venture.

You have a real knack for discovering special places …

I’ve spent ten years in the memory creation business. You can create these in Africa, in Iceland or in northern Germany – it doesn’t really matter where you are. This past summer, we offered a sunrise tour on the Lüneburg Heath. It was magical and misty when we set off, just beautiful. When the sun rose around 5:30 am and burned off the mist, we stopped for coffee and croissants, laid out on a white tablecloth. That’s the kind of detail that matters.

We’re not just there for the exercise and fresh air, we’re there to create unforgettable memories.

This isn’t the first time you have made a fresh start, you’ve ­reinvented yourself a number of times.

That’s true. I worked as an actor for a few years, started an IT company, which I later sold successfully, ran a hotel on a private island and sailed around the world in a high-tech boat. New things keep coming up.

Is there a motto that you live by?

I allow myself to discover new things and move with the times; I’m a fan of constantly ­evolving and of the maxim: “adapt or die!” I keep an eye out for gaps in the market.

You’ve spent much time in faraway places in recent years.

What made you start offering e-bike tours back home in northern Germany?

The coronavirus crisis has caused huge restrictions on travel. So I asked myself: What can we offer our German customers that they will enjoy but won’t require them to travel abroad? In the early days of the pandemic, I spent a lot of time on my e-bike. I studied maps, consulted Google Maps and so discovered beautiful routes with windmills and old bridges. That’s when it hit me: You don’t have to travel far to experience special ­places. Eighty percent of our customers hail from Hamburg but they’ve never seen their city from these vantage points. There are lots of romantic spots between the Alster Lake, the Elbe River and the harbor area.

Record-breaking year for U.S. real estate, despite the pandemic

T

his past year has been an extremely challenging one for many individuals and entire industries. So it is all the more worthwhile to take a look at the U.S. residential property market, which happens to be doing exceedingly well. The figures for December 2020 show that 70 percent of existing-homes on the market – single-family homes and condominiums – were sold within less than a month of being listed. Existing-home sales totaled 5.64 million in 2020, up 5.6 percent from 2019. The median existing-home price in December also increased markedly by 12.9 percent from one year ago.

But what is causing these large increases in price? The reason is quite simply that demand is far exceeding supply. The number of properties on the market has reached a historic low, while demand by potential buyers has remained consistently high.

This is true for both primary residences and second homes. Interest rates are low and many of our clients, who have been toying with the idea of purchasing a property for a while, have decided that now is the time to turn this idea into a reality. When a suitable property comes onto the market, the decision to buy is usually reached very quickly.

The largest surges in price can be observed in markets gaining new interest from buyers due to space and proximity to outdoor amenities. The shift to working from home has boosted the popularity of regions that are located further away from large metropolises and major places of employment. The fastest growing state in the U.S. is Idaho, in the country’s northwest, a state known for its unspoiled and picturesque landscapes. The pandemic has further reinforced this trend towards life in the countryside and increased the demand for spacious residen-

tial properties surrounded by large plots of land. The most recent statistics confirm this development: Last year, the Engel & Völkers shop in Sun Valley, Idaho, increased its sales by more than 100 percent.

Atlanta, Georgia is also currently experiencing a large demand for residential real estate as more and more people flock to the Southern metropolis where tech giants such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook have based some of their offices. In Georgia, real estate companies have been classified by the authorities as essential businesses, so our consultants were allowed to keep operating, with new precautions, unlike businesses in many other industries. In the summer of 2020, Engel & Völkers brokered the sale of the luxury villa that was formerly the home of actor and film producer Tyler Perry for $15 million. Closing this deal represented the most expensive property transaction in Georgia in 2020.

The success of our company in the U.S. and Canada is of particular and personal interest to me. I was privileged to be a part of the Engel & Völkers journey in North America from the start, so I am very proud of the fact that we are now the only European real estate company that has been able to establish itself in this extremely competitive market. Our brand image is exceptionally strong in both the U.S. and Canada, with half of our annual brokerage revenue generated from these two countries. We achieve record sales every week – a particular highlight being the sale of an estate in California for $118 million.

he realization came in the middle of the night on a trekking tour in Nepal. Just after her 30th birthday and having spent seven years opening 1,000 fashion shops all over China, this young businesswoman decided it was time for a break. “A week of Vipassana meditation, then a weeklong trek surrounded by nature, to take time off for myself,” Veronica Chou explains in a Zoom call from Hong Kong to Hamburg. “The day before, climbing the highest peak on that trip, I woke up around midnight and suddenly had this epiphany and knew: Whatever I did in the future would have to do with sustainability.”

Veronica didn’t change course for pure business reasons.

She was ­looking for a purpose.

A conviction that grew over years of experience in the mass-market fashion industry.

Having started when she was only 24, Veronica Chou introduced more than a dozen American mass market fashion brands into China, among them Karl Lagerfeld, Ed Hardy, London Fog and Candie’s. But despite the economic success, there were issues that she noticed while going about her regular business activities that increasingly made the young entrepreneur pause and think. Veronica: “Some of those experiences I’ll never forget, like stepping off a plane and feeling like I was walking into a sandstorm. I could see the particles in the air and when I got home after long days at work, my face and hands were black. Back then, everyone living in Asia was aware of the problem and was constantly talking about pollution.” To fully understand the significance of what it meant for Veronica to change her course drastically and decide to focus entirely on sustainability, one has to dive into the history of the Chou family. Over the course of several generations, the family’s visionary ­ideas had turned a textile industry into an institution whose impact has spread far beyond the borders of China. Veronica’s grandfather is the celebrated, 101-year-old textile tycoon Chao Kuang-piu, who was the owner of the largest groups of knitwear factories and known as the “Wool Magnate.” Her father, Silas Chou, was behind the success of global fashion brands Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors.

“I grew up going to my family’s knitwear and denim factories,” Veronica remembers. “As a teenager, I interned in my father’s companies to learn more about both the organizational and the manufacturing side of the business. In the factories, I couldn’t help wondering: Why is it so dusty here? What is that smell? Where does the colored water go after the fabric has been dyed? At the time, though, that was just the way things were and nobody spent a lot of time thinking about the consequences. Lat-

er, when I was bringing those U.S. brands to ­China and opening my stores, I realized that people were talking about the environment more and more and felt that I needed to learn all I could about sustainability.”

Another unhealthy aspect that she had encountered personally also motivated the young entrepreneur: “As a young Asian woman growing up in the fashion industry, I was constantly comparing myself to skinny American and European supermodels. When I was in high school in the States, my roommates at boarding school put up posters of these super skinny women and went on weird, random diets and exercised like crazy. It was really unhealthy! In American media, I hardly ever saw anyone who looked like me. Now there are a lot of Asians, but at the time, there weren’t that many represented at all. I really struggled, and for many years felt an immense amount of pressure. It affected me a lot and I had issues with self-esteem and body image. But all of these experiences taught me important lessons for the future, and I realized that a contemporary fashion brand would have to be inclusive and represent all nations, cultures and body sizes.”

After returning from her trekking trip in 2015, Veronica Chou sold her company Iconix China Ltd and began focusing exclusively on the subject of sustainability. A courageous decision, but she didn’t know where to start, so she asked her two elder half-brothers, who are tech investors. “They opened my eyes to the possibilities that were out there, pointing me down the path toward materials science and introduced me to companies that were already actively researching alternative textile technologies.”

How did her father react to this sudden entrepreneurial change of heart? “He never tried to talk me out of it, but at first, he didn’t really understand what I was doing. And he didn’t welcome it either when I tried to switch all the food and cleaning products in his home

“Growing up in the fashion industry, I felt ­under pressure to fit into a certain size. That’s why we’re size-inclusive today.” VERONICA CHOU to organic. You have to remember that ­ rganic and sustainable were not yet wideo spread concepts in the public consciousness.

But over time, my father came to realize that all of us have to start thinking about things in a different way. He introduced me to Susan Rockefeller, a sustainability pioneer, who has been so very helpful to my journey.”

Almost a year ago – not long before the onset of the pandemic – the mother of five-yearold twins started her own sustainable clothing company, Everybody & Everyone, based in the U.S. sells size-inclusive women’s fashions.

But Veronica Chou also wants to use her company to help educate her customers about leading more sustainable lives, and supports research in materials science knowing that only true alternatives – new, sustainable technologies – will make the difference in her industry. To start with, at Everybody & Everyone, she does not sell party dresses. Veronica: “These are items you should rent or buy second hand, especially since they’re usually intended for a single occasion. There are so many great pieces out there that have already been made, and they’re just waiting for a new owner. Everybody & Everyone specializes in basics, essential, versatile pieces you can wear on many different occasions. For instance, we have a turtleneck sweater where the neck part comes off, giving you either a turtleneck or a crewneck in one item of clothing. We also have black trousers made of fermented sugar that have an adjustable waist and adjustable length, no matter what shoes you’re wearing. They have buttons at the hem so you can easily adjust them up or down.

And then there’s our puffer jacket made of 330 recycled plastic bottles. It has a zipper that allows you to wear it as a short jacket when it’s not so cold out or turn it into a parka.”

Drawing people’s attention to new, innovative and sustainable materials and selling them to customers is something Veronica finds very exciting. “Early this year, our label introduced its first collection of athletic wear made of biodegradable nylon! Normal nylon takes up to 100 years to degrade, ours take three years.”

Together, she and her family support research in new, sustainable textiles. For many years, they have been investing in companies such as Modern Meadow, which grows leather in a lab “so that you don’t have to kill a cow in order to have leather,” as Veronica explains. Both she and her friend Emily Lam Ho have also invested in the Sneaker Company Thousand Fell,

the world’s first circular sneaker. Customers send in their old pair of white sneakers and get them back, transformed into new ones. As Veronica says: “Things are developing extremely fast in this area. When I started looking into sustainability in fashion about six years ago, there was only one company selling leggings made from recycled plastic. Today, it’s considered good form to be environmentally aware, and big companies like H&M and Adidas are producing items made of recycled ocean plastic. What fascinates me the most are innovative new companies producing materials that are not just ‘less bad’ for the planet but actually do more good – like those that come from regenerative farming.” Regenerative agriculture is a method of farming aimed at conserving nature and creating biodiversity, based on what we see in the natural world – without the use of synthetic pesticides. This approach creates and maintains healthy soil, which in turn traps more carbon dioxide – and provides a way for local farmers to make more money by growing a variety of plants rather than just one crop.

With regard to her company, Veronica says: “We offer shirts made of silk from regenerative silk farms, for instance. We also ensure that the shirts are sewn in the same place where the fabric is produced to keep the carbon footprint as small as possible. I want to give our customers the assurance that by buying our products, they are not only doing something good for themselves but also for the planet.”

What company does she regard as a role model and leader in the sustainable fashion sector? “Patagonia!,” she exclaims. The California-based specialist for outdoor clothing and gear (“We’re in Business to Save our Home Planet”) boasts 4.6 million followers on Instagram and employs around 1,000 people. An example that shows by selling sustainable, fairly produced products, it is possible to conquer the mass market. “I admire the way Patagonia treats its workers and the way it has grown as a company. I also like how they use their platform to make documentaries and educate people about how to live more sustainable lives.

Businesses of this size have the power to influence governments and their policy. I think it’s not fair to put pressure solely on consumers. Companies and businesses should also do their part. It’s important for governments to create and maintain sustainable practices by setting new rules and regulations.” Veronica Chou seems to be on-trend: Since the

­outbreak of COVID-19, consumer behavior around the world has in fact changed drastically according to a recent study by the Capgemini Research Institute. When deciding what to buy, 79 percent of consumers worldwide base their decision on values like social responsibility, inclusiveness and impact on the environment, according to the study, while 69 percent of consumers choose sustainably produced products.

Has Veronica personally noticed a difference when looking at the sales figures for her new company? “Absolutely!,” she says. “We’re still young, but we have sold to customers in every one of the 50 U.S. states. My typical customers are women my age who carefully observe what is happening in the world and around them.

I think the pandemic has produced a kind of reset within many people. When everything closed during the first lockdown, we had no choice but to go out into parks and on hikes and spend more time outside in nature. So all of a sudden, we realized how important it is to have a healthy environment, and learned the urgent need for a more sustainable world! We humans

cannot remain healthy if the world around us isn’t. Studies show that nature has an important effect on our psyches. Even going out for a walk among the trees improves our mood and is psychologically beneficial. Experiencing this again and again has aroused people’s curiosity about what sustainable fashion is all about, coupled with the awareness and mentions generated by the media, and as a result, we are seeing that customers are now quite willing to spend more money if it means they are doing something to keep our planet healthy. It’s important to keep in mind that each one of us can make the right choice three times a day when we decide what to eat – and every time we put on something to wear.”

What’s fascinating about Veronica’s business model is that she lived in London but relocated to Hong Kong with her family when the pandemic broke out. She launched her company via Zoom. Everybody & Everyone is headquartered in New York and currently only ships to customers in the U.S. Veronica: “Because the U.S. is innovative when it comes to fabrics science, but China has better manufacturing technology. In the past, you had to send physical fabric samples back and forth, but today we can reduce the number of samples by utilizing 3D technology.”

And has fashion production in China changed for the better since she started her new business? “I can see a drastic change. The factories we work with have been certified in many different ways. They use renewable energy. Also, the Chinese government is pushing green technologies. Take the regenerative farm from which we get our organic silk: When that farm switched to organic production the neighboring farms would knock on the door and ask: Why are you generating income while we’re suffering from setbacks due to COVID-19? It’s a trickle-down effect. Because the conversation is changing, the factories are under increased pressure to change their methods. Globally speaking, there are now more initiatives and models to help factories with their financing. One of the biggest U.S. organizations is the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC). It has a program called Clean by Design, which also operates in China. It’s a 10-step program that helps factories and mills change even basic things like switching to LED lighting or putting electric trackers in place to find out how much electricity they are using.

By insulating their buildings and learning how to treat waste water, companies that follow this program start saving money within just one year. So yes, I can definitely see that China is moving towards more sustainable production.” Her goal? “I’m not interested in making as much money as possible, I’m interested in having a purpose, which I have found.”

t’s four in the morning, just before dawn, as my partner and I drowsily crawl out of bed.

The rattle of the coffee machine helps us wake up. We have big plans and our bags are all packed. For the first time in a while, our summer vacation won’t involve flying but r­ ather solid ground from beginning to end. We’re about to set off on a road trip around Italy.

I tap our first destination into the GPS: Venice. And naturally, because of my excitement, I make a mistake. But once I get it right the device does its calculations and spits out a route via Salzburg, Austria. The projected travel time is roughly five hours. “Just a fivehour drive and we’ll be somewhere with an entirely different approach to life,” I happily proclaim, as I and my nine-month baby bump settle into the passenger seat. This is going to be our babymoon – our last chance at some dolce vita for just the two of us. That’s also why this trip will be quite different from a conventional beach vacation. Two years ago, my partner and I established our road-trip compatibility traveling around the American South. That trip had a different feel to it, though, because the only way to do it was to first travel by plane. This time, of course, our vacation commenced at the door of our car in Munich.

To my mind, air travel has two advantages: When you board, you know your destination and what time you will arrive. But this type of travel leaves no room for spontaneity. And then there are restrictions on almost everything: how much luggage you can take, what airline food you will be offered and how much space there is to move. In terms of space, the only restriction I have in the car is my pregnant belly. Our very manageable luggage easily fits into the trunk.

While the day is still dawning, we leave Germany behind, and before we know it we are crossing Austria accompanied by the rising sun. Soon we arrive in Italy, “the land where the lemon trees bloom,” and it’s still the morning of our first day of vacation. Just seeing Italian place names gives me a real vacation vibe. “Venezia” and “Verona” sound so much better to my ears than Regensburg and Rosenheim.

With each passing kilometer I ease back further into the passenger seat. Mediterranean vegetation whizzes past outside the car window, an alternating scene of cypress trees,

pine trees and fields of poppies and sunflowers. Above it all, the sky shines iridescent blue. My thoughts increasingly resemble the small fluffy clouds I see floating above us.

They come and go without getting stuck or stressing me out in the least. Another advantage of car travel: You can converse without any interruptions. My partner and I haven’t chatted – or sat quietly with each other – quite as much in a long time.

Then we begin our tour of various Italian cities. We are able to explore the tourist hotspots of Venice, Florence and Siena leisurely, without any crowds. So there is plenty of time for the real highlights of any road trip: the unplanned forays into the countryside and the stops in sleepy towns and villages where we experience Italy’s true charm. San Gimignano, Montepulciano and Montalcino are wonderful places to try traditional pasta dishes and sample Brunello wine (the latter only for my partner, naturally). I have yet to find anything back home in Germany that comes close to the taste of fresh Italian buffalo mozzarella. For one of our forays we just head to the sea, which is never far away no matter where you are in Italy.

As our road trip progresses, we become a really good team: My partner confidently steers us through the countryside, along the serpentine roads and through the hilly landscape, while I provide the drinks and a suitable soundtrack. Never knowing where we’ll sleep at night, we zoom along empty country roads, listening to Italian pop-music with the windows down and our sunglasses on. Never before have I been on a trip more relaxing or unique. No annoying check-in proceedings, no boarding times to stick to, no real schedule at all! Instead, lots of rest and relaxation, whenever we like.

It’s also a very enjoyable feeling to be the sole passenger when traveling by car. On planes, strangers’ elbows continually brush against your own and everyone tries their best to retreat into anonymity within the limited space allowed. Our car is so peaceful and I feel so at ease that I even manage the occasional restorative nap.

On the road, we were far from the only ones in search of bliss and a different kind of vacation. When the coronavirus thwarted most people’s travel plans last spring, many made the unexpected switch to the car, and the camping industry chalked up record sales.

According to Airstream’s managing director Armin Heun, demand in Germany increased by a whopping 20 percent, so that their sleek silver camper vans were sold out for several weeks already in the spring.

new boom. Co-founder Susanne Dickhardt reports that after an initial slump in sales, the easing of restrictions in early summer generated the busiest days for bookings since the company was founded in 2016.

After visiting Siena, we had initially wanted to relax in a country hotel for a week, but after just one night we felt a bit bored.

“Why don’t we drive to Rome?” I asked my partner. There was a short pause, a twinkle in his eye and then a quick call to reception asking for an early check-out. “Sure, off you go. You’ll never see Rome this empty again,” said the nice gentleman on reception and waved us on our way.

Well-experienced by now, we excitedly packed our things and left. Visits to Rome are normally as exhausting as they are impressive. Until this trip, I had only known the Eternal City from photographs, stories and the classic Audrey Hepburn movie ­Roman Holiday.

As it turned out, I couldn’t have picked a

better time to get to know the city first-hand.

My partner casually drove straight toward the Colosseum and initially, we just circled the landmark a few times.

Sadly, our road trip was now coming to an end and would not last for eternity. I usually like to get the return leg of a trip out of the way as quickly as possible, but now I was actually looking forward to the two days it would take us to drive back to Munich. Having said that, it was no longer quite as comfortable in the car, which we had stacked to the roof with crates of wine (Brunello, of course) and olive oil. At some point you learn that the clothing you buy on vacation only looks good on vacation but not when you’re home. On the other hand, when you open a bottle of Italian wine you’ve brought home from a trip, one sip can bring back that vacation feeling instantaneously.

“I’m already missing being on the move all the time. Where are we going next?” I ask my partner, my gaze losing itself in the Bavarian fields whizzing past. We’ll be home very soon. “How about honeymooning in Great Britain? We could travel around the whole island: England, Scotland and Wales,” he suggests without missing a beat. What a glorious idea! First our wedding, then another road trip – that’s next summer taken care of.

racey Emin was never one to keep her feelings to herself. She shocked the public with her display of overt, sometimes excessive sexuality, but that was precisely her intention. This way, she earned the freedom to present herself as a completely new, serious artist. At almost 60, she’s serene, reflective, s­ elf-assured, critical and independent enough to acknowledge the debt she owes to her role models in art history.

Perhaps Roberto was flattered – as were John, Frank, Chris and Suleman. Or was it alienating to them to discover their names up there with so many others? Some among them may have felt publicly exposed. What other woman would have compiled such a comprehensive list of everyone she had ever slept with?

And who else would have created such a large, brightly colored patchwork by embroidering their names on the inside of a tent? No one but Tracey Emin. Born in England and raised in Margate – by then an already deprived seaside town on Britain’s east coast – Tracey stepped onto London’s young art scene as an unknown from the sticks. A high school drop-out with a diploma in fashion design, she was attractive, though a little coarse, inquisitive, insecure and audacious. She was also severely traumatized by the two rapes she survived as a teenager and her first abortion at the age of 20.

The title of her tent installation: “Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995” puts things in perspective. The work appears to be a swirling mixture of love, violence, affection, desperation and a longing for security. Specifying the exact time period was an essential component of the work, as it encompassed her entire life from birth up to that point. So the profusion of 102 names included that of her grandmother, who held her in her arms when she was an infant. Also among them, two unnamed fetuses. Language can be playful, but also brutally misleading.

This was entirely intentional. The story of the tent tells us a great deal about who Tracey Emin was in 1995 and afterwards: her arrival in the metropolis of London, and soon thereafter, the award of a degree from the Royal College of Art. Yet for a long time, Emin remained something of a wallflower among the group of Young British Artists (YBA), whose members included Damien Hirst, Chris Ofili and Sarah Lucas. Artists who had caused their own

scandals that had helped them establish themselves. When Carl Freedman, the curator of the South London Gallery, invited Emin to be part of the Minky Manky exhibition, he advised her to show “something big” after all the small-format pieces on paper that she had produced until then. The artist reacted angrily to the thinly veiled criticism. Something big? Something spectacular? Okay, then. That’s what he was going to get! The critics were thrilled and the piece was her breakthrough. Tracey Emin, the defiant artist, had suddenly become a star. The curator’s name was also stitched into the fabric of the tent.

That wasn’t the end of the story, though.

Charles Saatchi offered to buy the tent for 12,000 British pounds, but Emin turned him down. Selling her work to an advertising mogul whose campaigns had helped Margaret Thatcher come to power? No way! The collector had to wait for the notorious piece to be put up for sale by a gallery owner. Saatchi paid 40,000 pounds and sent the work on tour with the Royal Academy’s spectacular Sensation exhibition, including to New York. Several years later a competitor allegedly offered to pay him 300,000 British pounds for it, but Saatchi declined. Some years after that, in 2004, the piece that had become an iconic work of art was destroyed in a fire.

The press lamented the irreplaceable loss.

Saatchi offered Emin a cool million to reconstruct it, but she refused. Art has its limits.

Where to begin the search for the scraps of fabric, each one imbued with its own history and meaning? Her artist colleague Stuart Semple swept up the ashes and sold them as objets trouvés, found objects, enclosed in plexiglas. That’s how the market works. The Young British Artists, whose works were by that time fetching exorbitant prices, had learned their lesson well. Only Tracey Emin reacted stoically, reminding people that wedding parties were being bombed in Iraq and that they should try to keep things in perspective.

By that time, she had already delivered a second iconic work, “My Bed” (1998), which was first exhibited in Tokyo and then went on a tour of museums and galleries around the world.

The tent from three years earlier now felt like a juvenile provocation compared with the unmade bed with its dirty linen, complete with stains of blood and sperm and littered with dirty underwear, cigarette butts, used condoms, tampons, contraceptives and half empty vodka bottles. These were crazy, furious and frenetic times! At least until Saatchi started championing a new batch of artists, this time figurative painters, ranging from Martin Kippenberger to members of the New Leipzig School. The art market duly followed suit, as willingly as ever.

Tracey Emin is a multifaceted artist.

Her body of work consists of paintings and drawings, sculptures, installations, photographs and videos.

Emin was one of the very few artists to survive the vicissitudes of public opinion. In 2007, she was chosen to represent her country in the British pavilion at the Venice Biennale; and in 2011 appointed Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy of Arts in London – one of only two female professors in the academy’s more than 250-year history, the other being Fiona Rae. There’s no question about it: Emin is among Britain’s most acclaimed artists. She refers to herself as a feminist, but objects to being called a feminist artist. Art is art, and the rest is the rest. Meanwhile, the Bed was sold at auction for 2.5 million pounds.

There has, after all, always been another Tracey Emin, who already stated several years ago that she no longer identified with the young woman she once was. She says she is now detached from her younger self and has entered a new phase of her life – artistically, morally and as a human being. It cannot be easy to distance yourself from an early work so immediate and intimate, but Emin has succeeded in doing so.

The wild, abused girl who often turned to violence herself is gone. Life requires us to play new roles, some of them supported by the realization that after the wild times, more intensity can be found in being alone.

Emin says she has grown humbler, more compassionate, more honest with herself and generally more forgiving of weaknesses and doubt. Think of the aggressiveness required to stitch all those names of men, women and unborn children into the sides of a tent, take it to a museum and display it for all to see – did she really do that? Unthinkable, today.

Back then, she was lashing out, furious, offended and hurt. Very likely also driven by the ambition to emulate other artists, mostly men, who had caused a furor with sharks in formaldehyde or elephant dung paintings, which fetched huge sums. But after it had entered the pure, pristine art world, she once said in an interview, she never used her provocative bed again, adding bluntly that she hadn’t had sex in years, either. Hard liquor had never been her thing anyway and she had quit smoking.

The monastery was calling, that’s how she described her life as early as 15 years ago.

So was it nothing but a fiction? A ruthless, immature attempt to reach the top of a market that paid handsomely for anything with Saatchi’s name on it, or bearing the YBA trademark? Tracey Emin avoids thinking about her more embarrassing memories. After all, she can point to a solid foundation – apart from a few aberrations – on which her biography as an artist is built.

She has also nurtured elective affinities with kindred spirits over many years. Among these are Viennese artist Egon Schiele with his unflinching images of the human body, Francis

Bacon, the expressive painter of the human form and the American sculptor Louise Bourgeois, whose struggle to plumb the depths of her own traumas Emin witnessed at the time.

Add to that, William Turner, the great, pioneering Romantic painter.

Last November, the Royal Academy gave her the opportunity to celebrate an artistic encounter she had been preparing for a very long time. A double exhibition entitled “The Loneliness of the Soul,” it featured works by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch alongside Emin’s own art, and was originally supposed to open in Oslo. In addition to showing new paintings of her own, many of them large-format works, she had planned to take an over-sized bronze nude, a kneeling, seven-meter tall “mother” to Norway in order to celebrate the opening of the brand-new, gleaming Munch Museet that had been built on the waterfront by Oslo architects Snøhetta.

The artist has admitted that as a girl, she had been madly in love with the super-sensitive painter who feared women his entire life, clarifying that she was physically attracted to him, too. But then the corona pandemic interrupted her travel plans. For now only in her own country and through the end of February, she will be demonstrating how the shy Norwegian’s work influenced her in coming to terms with the sensuality of painting. She will also be talking about surrendering herself to materials and to chance, about the physicality of the act of painting, and about allowing yourself to drift, to float. And she wouldn’t be Tracey Emin if she didn’t finish by saying that this kind of painting is, well, very much like sex.

Last year, Emin tells us, a sensuous but disturbing blood-red and black painting emanated from her, seemingly forcing its way out, unplanned and unintended. Shortly afterwards, doctors discovered a tumor. Last summer, twelve surgeons spent six hours removing almost all the organs in her lower abdomen: her uterus, her bladder, her ovaries, parts of her colon and parts of her vagina. The artist has never been shy about sharing intimate details with the public. The tumor had the exact same shape as the amorphous work her hand and brush had forced onto the canvas.

So there is a good chance this article will soon be read as an obituary. However, Emin says she is happy now, very happy, actually.

Her art fulfills her, and as far as she is concerned, things could very well continue as they are. She had given her life a new direction even before receiving her diagnosis, and has now become even more introspective. Emin has also moved back to her hometown of Margate, and the unparalleled light on its coastline. One day, her current home will house her archive and her museum.

chance encounter can sometimes change your life. If not immediately, then perhaps later .Timing is crucial. When Jochen Zeitz, then CEO of Puma, met Benedictine monk Anselm Grün, the timing was just right. Zeitz had achieved everything he could as a businessman. He was Germany’s highest paid executive earning nearly ten million euros a year, but for quite a while, had been plagued by questions that went far beyond his account balance.

They met in the summer of 2008 during a panel discussion at the Nuremberg press club. One was a monk, dressed in the habit of his order; the other was a top executive of a global company. It wasn’t long before they discovered that they shared the same values and similar interests. The friar invited Zeitz to spend a week at his monastery, and the CEO of Puma took him up on the offer, joining the monks for morning prayers at 4:30 am. The two men’s conversations were soon turned into a book entitled The Manager and the Monk: A Discourse on Prayer, Profit and Principles, which was published in 2010. Not long afterwards, the manager made some drastic changes to his life: He left the top job at Puma he had held for 17 years, and divorced his wife of 18 years. This radical departure cannot be ascribed to Zeitz’s encounter with the monk alone, but it helped him on his way.

Jochen Zeitz was born in Mannheim, ­Germany, in 1963. Both his parents were doctors, as were their parents before them, going all the way back to the 16th century. Zeitz also started off studying medicine. But then came the first of many changes of direction: He dropped medicine and took up economics, after which he followed an unswerving path, always in the fast lane. Zeitz learned the ins and outs of marketing at Colgate-Palmolive in New York. In 1993, not yet 30, he took over at Bavarian sportswear manufacturer Puma. The company was anything but a luxury brand back then: nearly bankrupt, its image battered. But Zeitz was up for the challenge. He wasn’t apprehensive and had never been one to lack confidence.

Never before had a German publicly traded company appointed such a young CEO. The Financial Times mocked him as being “just out of kindergarten,” but the criticisms soon

subsided. Zeitz turned the ailing ­company around and two-digit annual growth figures became the norm. Then Puma started breaking records, one after the next. When rappers turned sneakers into fashion statements, Zeitz was one of the first to recognize the trend and turned the company into a global lifestyle brand. Madonna, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio were soon seen sporting Puma sneakers. Alexander McQueen and Jil Sander designed collections for Zeitz.

Just like his fantastic career, Zeitz’s private life appeared to be in excellent shape. When he wasn’t jetting around the world, he and his wife Birgit lived a quiet, secluded life in Nuremberg. There are no photos of the two of them together from those years, no tabloid headlines. Zeitz didn’t appear on talk shows, either, but his financial results were exemplary.

Increasingly, Jochen Zeitz began to concern himself with more universal subjects. In 2010, he had an environmental report drawn up for Puma, an unsparing analysis and the first to be published by any major company.

The result was sobering: Puma’s global environmental impact came to 145 million euros. “It’s time to change our business model,” Zeitz concluded, and pledged to pay more attention to sustainable manufacturing.

He considers himself an amateur psychologist, has read Kant, Freud, Schopenhauer, Confucius and Sartre, and has studied the arts of Zen masters and shamans. At some point Zeitz realized that he no longer wanted to sell sneakers, but rather save the planet and turn genuine visions into reality. After he left Puma, he was appointed Chief Sustainability Officer at Paris-based luxury goods group PPR, now Kering. But deep inside, he felt drawn to ­A frica, a continent that had

fascinated him for many years. Soon he began spending half his time there.

In 2005, he acquired 200 square kilometers of land on the Laikipia Plateau in Kenya – an area the size of the island of Manhattan, just a 45-minute flight from the capital, Nairobi. There, he built a luxurious eco-lodge, the Segera Retreat: eight wooden pavilions on stilts with an unparalleled view of the savanna. At night, guests get to listen to roaring lions and laughing hyenas, while during the day, herds of elephants, buffaloes, leopards, zebras und gazelles pass by in front of their lounge chairs.

Zeitz designed his African dream down to the last detail. Old letters and photos of Hemingway adorn the walls, and the famous biplane from the movie Out of Africa is there, too: Zeitz bought it at auction, restored it and now flies it around the estate. Naturally, a man like him has a pilot’s license. Zeitz greets his employees in their native Swahili, which he taught himself with an audio language course. He speaks half a dozen other languages as well, In 2008, Jochen Zeitz started his eponymous conservation foundation dedicated to protecting the global biosphere. Tourism plays a big part in this and Segera became the foundation’s showcase for sustainable tourism. The retreat uses solar power and has its own wastewater purification system. It welcomes travelers with deep pockets who are prepared to pay a lot of money to feel good about themselves.

Jochen Zeitz reinvented himself in his middle years. He didn’t just become a rancher but also a patron of the arts, opening a spectacular seven-floor museum in Cape Town’s harbor area – one of the world’s most important venues for contemporary African art. In 2012, he and Richard Branson founded B-Team, a non-profit organization aimed at helping top executives shift their thinking away from short-term profit and toward the more economically viable long-term goals of human well-being and the well-being of the planet.

All of this, Zeitz explained several years ago, was his “second life’s work.” He added: “Make sure you don’t spend your entire life climbing a ladder only to find that it’s leaning against the wrong wall.” He has also changed his physical appearance, wearing his hair longer and sporting a beard and sideburns. Zeitz is now married to a British film producer with whom he has two small children. The two are named after the legendary American outlaws Frank and Jesse James. Zeitz is a huge fan of Wild West lore and an adventurer at heart.

Many thought that he had left the corporate world for good, but then he was approached

by Harley-Davidson, the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer. Zeitz joined its board of directors in 2007. In 2015, sales fig-

ures started slipping. Young people in particular were no longer interested in Harleys, which had lost the allure they had acquired when Peter Fonda immortalized them in Easy Rider. The bikes were seen as noisy, expensive, out-of-date gas guzzlers.

Last February, when the company’s longtime CEO stepped down, it was announced that Zeitz would replace him, but only temporarily. Three months later, he was officially made President and CEO of Harley-Davidson. The daunting task facing the European executive was to rescue the traditional American brand and secure its future by attracting millennials and making motorcycles cool again – primarily through good ideas and convincing storytelling.

No one was better suited for the job than Zeitz, thanks to his remarkable life story.

In one important way, Zeitz fits the HarleyDavidson image extraordinarily well: He is enviably free. Back in the day, he was regarded as Mr. Puma, but today, he’s just himself: Jochen Zeitz, a man who makes and lives by his own rules. A glance at his Instagram account shows that although he has nominally returned to life in the corridors of corporate power, he is still very much free to decide where he wants to be. Sometimes, he and his family can be found in Kenya, at other times on his ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In between, he makes pitstops in Milwaukee, but in an interview ten years ago, Zeitz had already made himself abundantly clear: “I’m a virtual worker. I’m not tied to an office.”

At the same time, Zeitz is renowned for his micromanagement. At Puma, it has been reported, he insisted that all employees’ travel expenses be agreed by him personally. And when he sets his heart on something, he always follows through. During his time on the board of Harley-Davidson, he established the Brand and Sustainability Committee in 2011. Although the LiveWire, Harley-Davidson’s first ever electric bike, was launched by his predecessor in September 2019, Zeitz was very much involved in its development. Under his leadership, the Milwaukee-based company came up with an entirely new definition of freedom – the freedom to ride a motorcycle in a healthy natural environment. “We believe that electric motorcycles will play an important role in the future of Harley-Davidson,” says Zeitz.

So far, the new Harley-Davison CEO has cut 700 jobs and has streamlined decision-making processes and general operations to improve efficiency. And he seems very confident that he’s on the right track. The day after he was appointed CEO, Jochen Zeitz bought Harley-Davison shares worth more than two million dollars.

t’s difficult to say whether beautiful women have it easier in life. Opinions differ. Beauty is sometimes said to be a gift, but it can also be a burden. It’s certainly no guarantor of success, and even less of happiness. Beauty has consequences, that much seems certain. So when thinking about Sofia Vergara’s rise to fame as an actress, it is easy to assume that her success has come about primarily because she’s so gorgeous.

The highest paid actress on the planet at present is neither Jennifer Lawrence, nor Scarlett Johansson, nor Angelina Jolie – it’s Sofia Vergara. According to Forbes Magazine, she earned a reported 43 million dollars last year.

She starred in the sitcom “Modern Family,” and is said to have been paid half a million dollars per episode. In the show, she plays a hysterically funny South American bombshell, a politically incorrect stereotype who drives her on-screen husband (played by Ed O’Neill, the actor famous for portraying Al Bundy in “Married with Children”) – and many others – crazy.

The native Colombian seems to embody her sitcom character even outside the show: curvy and full-lipped, with a Spanish accent that eclipses even fellow actor Antonio Banderas’s struggle with English pronunciation.

Vergara’s fans – among them a remarkable number of women – say that she’s “pure sex appeal and really fun.” U.S. network NBC has a female Zorro show in the pipeline, in which she is to star as the lead. If you look a little closer at Sofia Vergara’s career it quickly becomes apparent that her success is not based on her good looks, nor her artistry, for that matter. Vergara is not a brilliant actress, which she would probably be the first to admit.

Iconic actress Sharon Stone once made a very insightful statement about the fate of beautiful women in Hollywood: “It’s not easy to be as beautiful as you look.” In the eyes of her fans, Sofia Vergara manages that with aplomb: she is as beautiful as she looks. She became famous for being a strong woman who hardly misses an opportunity to laugh at her own weaknesses.

The spectacularly attractive Latina would never think of making doe eyes at someone just to get through an interview. The best example of this is when Vergara appears on the the male-dominated, late night show circuit on U.S. television that she has mas-

tered better than most anyone else. In her appearances, she is the epitome of a seductive, quick-witted icon who leaves her long line of hosts speechless. She flirts, teases and provokes – and delivers her punchlines with a dreamlike casualness. These men, usually paragons of self-confidence, cling to their index cards in desperation, realizing very soon that they will never get to ask the questions they’ve prepared, but not understanding what is happening to them. In the studio, Vergara is a force of nature, one that audiences adore.

Once, one of these shows tried to poke fun at her strong Spanish accent and asked her to read out some tweets: “Sofia Vergara sounds like she has a d*** in her mouth. I hate the way she speaks,” said one of them unkindly.

Vergara responded: “And what’s wrong with having a d*** in your mouth?”

At an award show quite early on in her career, she was asked to introduce herself briefly. Wearing a tight white dress with a plunging neckline, she proclaimed: “I was raised in Barranquilla, Colombia in a very traditional, Catholic household. My father told me that if I did anything artistic, I would look like a prostitute. I replied: ‘With these huge breasts I inherited from your mother, I look like a prostitute anyway.’ I am Sofia Vergara, and I’m an actress.”

Vergara is so funny, she makes you totally forget how beautiful she is, which is something few attractive people succeed in doing. It’s also something that sets her apart from other Hollywood beauties. It makes her unique, and in large part explains her 43-million-dollar paycheck. You cannot just replace her with another beautiful Latina. She has been criticized for this, of course: Some said her provocative, often erotic appearance propagates the stereotype of the naive, superficial Latina. Many columnists wrote that her sexualized demeanor was, in the end, anti-feminist. Vergara has often responded to such criticisms with mild, good-natured incredulity.

“Who doesn’t like being called attractive? I don’t think about that kind of thing at all. I am who I am. What am I supposed to do, run around with a paper bag over my head?”

One of the reasons why Vergara is relatively immune to such hostility can probably be found in her life story. When you examine it, attacks by East Coast intellectuals and their ideas of what women should be like, are probably not the most important thing in her world.

Sofia Vergara was born into a wealthy family in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1972. Her father had made lots of money breeding cattle, while her mother looked after their five children. When she was 18, Sofia married her childhood sweetheart José González and

Fans say she’s “pure sex appeal and really fun,” among them a remarkable number of women. gave birth to their son Manolo when she was only 19. While out for a walk, she was approached by a casting agent. Had she considered appearing in commercials? Vergara had not in fact given a momen’t thought to making money using her good looks, but decided to give it a try. What followed was a photo shoot and a commercial for Pepsi, which made her famous all over Latin America. Before she knew it, TV stations were enquiring about her. Her marriage to José fell apart just as quickly. Still only in her early twenties, Vergara was suddenly a single mom and studying dentistry on the side.

In the 1990s, Colombia was ruled by lawlessness. Drug lord Pablo Escobar terrorized the population, marauding gangs controlled vast swaths of the country’s territory. The death rates in Cali, Bogotá und Medellín were among the highest in the world and kidnappings followed by ransom demands were a daily occurrence. One of the victims of these violent years was Sofia’s older brother Rafael, who was only 27 at the time. His killer was never apprehended. Vergara’s mother, Margarita, would never be the same again. “She was like a totally different person, a zombie,” says the actress.

At that time, Sofia Vergara and her son Manolo already lived in Miami. She had dropped out of dentistry school to work as a presenter for a Spanish language channel. After the murder of her brother, she brought the whole family over to the U.S., with the exception of her father, as her parents had already separated. Rafael’s death had devastated them all. Her brother Julio, who had been very close to his older brother, never got over Rafael’s death and slowly lost control of his life. He got addicted to alcohol, then hard drugs and became a petty criminal addicted to crack cocaine. In the end, he was deported back to Colombia. “Watching someone die slowly for ten years is the worst kind of punishment,” says Vergara.

In the year 2000, when she was 28, another tragedy hit: doctors diagnosed her with thyroid cancer. The organ had to be removed.

The experience has deeply affected her, and she is very involved with cancer charities to this day. When asked about this time in her life, she always has the same response. “I don’t complain when bad things happen. I just keep going.” Why take to your bed, depressed, when you could spend that energy

to get your life back on track?

She did exactly that. The first small breakthrough came shortly after her recovery in 2002 – a supporting role in the Hollywood comedy Big Trouble. After picking up some other, smaller parts, in 2009 she was cast in the sitcom that would end up changing everything: Sofia Vergara played Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in “Modern Family,” a role she has described as “the role of a lifetime.” A loud, curvy Latina married to a significantly older American man, who throughout the series cannot decide whether this attractive woman is the best thing that has ever happened to him or whether so much vivacity and energy will kill him in the end.

Vergara was nominated for an Emmy four years in a row, from 2010 to 2013. Last year she was awarded the prestigious People’s Choice Award in the Comedy category. Sofia Vergara is the most popular comedic actress in the U.S. and relishes her success. In an interview with an Arabic-language magazine, she once said that she did not subscribe to the motto “less is more.” Ascetic minimalism was not her thing at all. In fact, her motto was “more is more.”

She loves beautiful clothes, exuberant parties, going shopping with her friends, and her favorite course is dessert. She works out because the job demands it and because it’s good for her health, but she doesn’t do it because she actually likes it.

Five years ago, Vergara married Joe Manganiello, who starred in True Blood and who has recently been tipped for several superhero parts, which is quite obvious, given the way he looks. Manganiello is a muscly giant, just shy of two meters tall, and is considered an exceptionally skilled actor.

Compared with others in Hollywood, where Vergara has been living for the last 15 years, the two of them lead a rather quiet life in their 26-million-dollar mansion in Beverly Hills. For a while, rumors were circulating that they were trying for a baby, but they seem to have decided against it. Vergara is 48 and is very close to Manolo, her grown-up son.

When he was recently asked what kind of a mother she was, he responded: “She yells a lot and is over-protective. She’s the best mother there is. A typical Latina.”

This, too, is a stereotypical image of her that Sofia Vergara won’t have a problem living with.

o far up, on the 79th floor of 432 Park Avenue, the hustle and bustle of Manhattan’s busy streets fades to quiet. It’s easy to imagine being stood here at the window, cup of tea in hand, just gazing out across Central Park to the horizon beyond. The luxury apartment, designed in a minimalist style inspired by East Asian traditions, feels like something from another world right here on New York City’s most famous thoroughfare.

Originally, the idea for a tea room was envisaged in the vacant space. One that would serve as a work of art – in the same way that the highly acclaimed Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto has worked on several occasions previously. For his own studio in Chelsea, for instance, and on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Best known up until now for his celebrated photographic works that have made him one of Japan’s most important contemporary artists, Sugimoto has done much more here than bring tea culture from his homeland to the heart of Midtown East. Together with his Tokyo-based architecture studio New Material Research Laboratory (NMRL) and the architects of YUN Architecture in New York, he has transformed this approximately 748-square-metre apartment into a synthesis of the arts, imbued with an aesthetic calmness influenced by Japanese culture.

serve as spatial separators placed between the long sushi bar and the large dining table. For those with a frequent appetite for fresh sushi rolls, Sugimoto has even made sure a chef is on hand. Just next door are the kitchen and living room; followed by the private quarters, facing north and east respectively, with an office, guestroom and master bedroom.

The bespoke interior design throughout bears Sugimoto’s signature in every single detail – from the fixtures and fittings, to the screw-shaped dining chairs, and the carefully curated photographs by the Japanese artist himself.

Rare raw materials sourced from Japan were used for all the finishes and colour textures. Weathered stone from the streets of Kyoto is now laid in the guest lobby. Untreated grey clay tiles, made by craftsmen according to century-old traditions, now pave the hallways. The hand-carved chestnut wood in the bedroom and the tufa stone from the cliffs of Lake Towada featured in the bathrooms also demonstrate a dramatic force of the exotic choices made. It took Japanese craftsmen two months to apply the gently shimmering shikkui plaster to the walls. Three coats of it in total, made in Tagawa. All of this beauty and care is framed by endless views over New York City: a vast and iconic panorama that rolls out like a carpet in all directions.

“It’s a trip back in time to the Middle Ages, but with modernday comforts.“ ANA MARÍA CRUSAFONT SABATÉ

I

n the Catalan province of Lleida lies the truly idyllic Aran Valley. The rocky gorges of the Pyrenees add drama to the landscape here, amidst all the luxuriant greenery. Medieval fortresses and historic stone houses with slate roofs give the region an inimitable charm. Here on the edge of the valley, just 11 kilometres from the French border, the quaint little village of Unha is perched up on a hillside. Just one road leads through this hamlet with 114 residents – and just on its edge a very special property is there to behold.

King Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), the Spanish monarch descended from the Habsburg dynasty, ordered the construction of Brastet Castle in 1580.

Elsewhere in Spain, people happily head to the beach to sunbathe in the winter. Meanwhile, in the Aran Valley, temperatures drop to sub-zero.

It is turned into one of the finest winter sports regions in the country. The Baqueira-Beret ski resort is known internationally for its superb conditions. As well as boasting the best powder snow in the Pyrenees, it is also where the Spanish aristocracy flock for their winter break. 27 lifts and two gondolas provide comfortable access to the vast terrain, at altitudes reaching 2,510 metres. Accommodation in the resort itself includes chalets and luxury hotels. Steam from the thermal springs can be seen rising up on the mountain, while horse-drawn sleighs glide across the snow down in the valley. When a change of pace is called for, there’s a floodlit toboggan run, an ice-skating rink, saunas and an indoor pool. It quietens down in the summer months. A thin veil of fog hangs over the valley in the mornings. Hikers set off through the nearby Aigüestortes National Park, while mountain climbers take on the 3,000-metre peaks all right on the doorstep.

33 villages can be found in the Aran Valley, which for centuries remained virtually cut off from civilisation to the south – with only mule trails traversing the 2,072-metre mountain terrain. Since 1924, the winding “Bonaigua Pass” has linked the region with France. This heritage has shaped the culture of the valley, which spans some 620 square kilometres in total.

Around 10,000 live here, speaking Catalan, Spanish or Aranèse, and at the weekly market, paella and tropical fruits are sold along-

side baguettes and cheese loaves. In tourist guides, a trip around the local villages is often described as the “Romantic Route”. It is not just medieval fortresses like Brastet Castle that give the region its unique allure. There are no less than nine Romanesque churches in the neighbouring Boí Valley, with frescoes that have had them declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A single thoroughfare passes through the village of Unha, with Brastet Castle stood just at its entrance. Its impressively solid walls were built back in 1580 by order of King Philip II of Spain, as the Huguenots were advancing into the Aran Valley. The castle was to serve as a protective fortification. At that time it was possible to spot the Huguenots as they approached from the towers. Nowadays, with a little luck, the rare bearded vulture can be sighted – one of the emblematic species of the Pyrenees. Down below, wildflowers, old oaks and fruit trees grow in the castle garden.

A barn is tucked away between them, and the gentle trickle of a fountain can be heard in the distance. Everything seems a little removed from the present, as if time had stood still.

The current owner, Ana María Crusafont Sabaté, was travelling through the Aran Valley with her family in 1959 when they came across the old castle. At that time, it had been empty for more than 20 years. “The interior was a wreck, with windows and doors either left broken and decayed or replaced without any regard for the heritage,” she says. Her family bought the historic building and set about renovating it faithfully in a Catalan style, right from the basement through to the rooftop. It now comprises a spacious living area with a fireplace, a kitchen with a pantry, a library, nine bedrooms, four modern bathrooms, and an attic.

“When we bought the house, the front door had been replaced with a new one. Then, in an abandoned ruin in the town of Benasque, we discovered a 16th century door and decided to purchase it. It fits perfectly,” says Ana Crusafont. They also sourced cross windows dating from the Renaissance. The slate roof was replaced with the old tiles. Ten-metre planks of local wood were used for the floors with a rustic finish. Some of the furniture dates back to the 16th century, while people were eating from the plates as long ago as Renaissance times. “We didn’t set out to create a luxury home. Rather, a place alive with its own history,” says Ana Crusafont. Now it is time to write the next chapter in the story.

Stillness speaks...

Deep in the mountains of Zhejiang Province in East China, and just an hour away from the provincial capital and vibrant metropolis Hangzhou, lies the luxury retreat Origin Villa.

It was built by Kooo Architects, a Japanese architectural firm based in Tokyo and Shanghai, who converted a nearly abandoned mountain village into a unique hotel complex that virtually fades into its surroundings. The original village had been established on the side of a cliff so that every building had a clear view of the mountains.

The resort consists of a number of guest rooms, a restaurant and a bar, spread out across six buildings. All of them lie within the original village, which is still inhabited by a few local people. The traditional, thick mud walls of the old buildings provided excellent protection from the heat and cold, but didn’t let in enough light by today’s standards.

The architectural challenge was to modernize the old buildings while preserving the original style so that the new complex would merge seamlessly into its surroundings. Large windows and glass frontages give onto the scenic mountains. Open, outdoor areas reflect the latest aesthetics for modern living and create a feeling of limitless space. Local materials such as bamboo were used in the construction, along with red brick and hand-burned wood.

The result is a rural getaway for stressed city dwellers. The retreat is so well hidden among the densely forested mountains that at night, guests won’t see any lights at all, not even shimmering in the distance.
