T

he U.S. inventor Thomas Edison supposedly tried out some 9,500 different carbonized cotton thread filaments before he found the one that generated a sustained glow inside a lightbulb. His notes were littered with the ab-

breviation “T.A.” – try again. As Winston Churchill is alleged to have said: “Success consists of getting up just one more time than you fall.” It’s an attitude that guides visionaries like Elon Musk, and one whose power to inspire large numbers of people – myself included – remains undiminished. Perseverance, determination and resolve have always been qualities that characterize me, both as a private individual and as an entrepreneur. I benefited from these traits as far back as the inception of GG magazine, the publication you are currently holding in your hands. I had long had the dream of producing my own magazine, but none of the Hamburg-based publishing houses shared my belief in the concept. Giving up was not an option, so I founded my own publishing company in 1988, which produced the first edition of GG that year. I am incredibly proud of the fact that this publication has grown into an internationally renowned lifestyle and real estate magazine. GG now boasts a circulation of more than 300,000 copies, distributed across more than 30 countries. A particular challenge in the company history of Engel & Völkers, and for me personally, was breaking into the U.S. real estate market. The knowledge and expertise we had acquired in Europe were not wholly applicable to the U.S. There were several substantial challenges we had to overcome, but keeping our eyes on a clearly defined objective helped us in this endeavor – as did having the best team imaginable, of course. Engel & Völkers has succeeded in establishing itself in the U.S. market – the only European real estate broker to do so. To me, that’s an incredible success story! So what have we set ourselves next? We want to expand the brand’s potential – particureal estate company in the luxury segment. A look at our company history shows that we possess the necessary skills and expertise, including a generous

WELCOME

Dynamic crisis... Despite the fact that we have spent much of the past two years with

lockdowns, restrictions and a sense of stagnation, it was surprising for me to learn that a huge number of entrepreneurs have used the same time to establish new businesses: 4.3 million new companies were founded in the U.S. alone last year – a rise of 24 percent compared with the previous year. The financing volume at the same time also rose strongly in Europe during the second half of 2020 and, at 21.2 billion euros, reached its highest level ever. In other words, the crisis triggered a dynamic startup boom! The fact that every crisis harbors the chance for an opportunity isn’t exactly new, but in light of such a positive, forward-looking mindset, we have dedicated this whole issue to the subject. Meet Judith Dommermuth, who created the German leisurewear company Juvia a few years ago but has now, during the pandemic, also conquered male customers since the home office has become an established trend. Read all about the increase in demand at NetJets, the world’s largest private jet company, which has experienced unprecedented growth since commercial travel has been challenged by the coronavirus. Learn more about the subject of vertical farming and why investors around the globe are hyped about this trend – and marvel at the ideas of more visionary personalities that are shaping our new world.

Let yourself be inspired!

ustin, Texas, breaks one record after another. In the last 20 years, the metro area has grown from roughly 1.3 million to 2.3 million inhabitants. This figure is expected to double again by 2050. The liberal stronghold in the otherwise arch-conservative South has been named the USA’s most livable city multiple times. As an incubator for startups and innovation, Austin looks poised to give California’s Silicon Valley a run for its money. Every notable tech company now has offices in the Texan capital: Google was attracted to “Silicon Hills” as early as 2007 and Facebook followed in 2010. Elon Musk moved Tesla’s company headquarters here and the offices opened in December, with a new 1.1 billion-dollar vehicle plant also under construction. Apple’s one billion-dollar campus, which will house up to 15,000 employees, is set to open this year, too. It all started in the 1980s when college dropout Michael Dell founded the company that bears his name with just 1,000 dollars of seed capital. Today, Dell has roughly 160,000 employees globally. The annual South by Southwest festival, which has been taking place here since 1987, is one of the world’s most important tech events and has also played a part in the city’s growth. Last year saw record venture capital investments in Austin: 2.4 billion dollars flowed into innovation in the first half of the year alone. Few other U.S. cities make it easier to start a business. Affordable rents and the absence of a state income tax have turned Austin into a startup hub. That’s why young, educated people from diverse backgrounds are flocking to the region and creating new opportunities in the otherwise ultra-conservative South. After work, people meet for picnics, for example in Zilker Park, Austin’s answer to Manhattan’s Central Park. On the weekends, Austinites go hiking

21

or cycling in the Barton Creek Greenbelt recreational area. In the summertime, the beautiful rocky scenery of the Spyglass trailhead and the promise of swimming and sunbathing at Campbell’s Hole beckon. At dusk, you can watch 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats swarm over the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, the underside of which is their home. Get some genuine cowboy boots at Allens Boots or the city’s best brunch at the iconic Magnolia Cafe. Austin’s official nickname is “Live Music Capital of the World,” so if live music is what you’re after – along with whiskey on tap and a great atmosphere – head over to The White Horse bar. Austin’s story began in 1835, when it was still called Waterloo. Three years later, the quickly expanding town was renamed Austin, and became the capital of Texas shortly thereafter. You can find out more at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. The LBJ L ibrary and Museum focuses on Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the USA, while the lively Contemporary Austin is the city’s hub for contemporary art. The Umlauf Sculpture Garden + Museum exhibits works by Charles Umlauf and other artists, as well as hosting yoga sessions, sound baths and food markets. Would you like to know more?

ART & DESIGN

Magic Moss

If you want to improve the atmosphere in your office, this green piece of art could be the answer. From a distance, it looks like an aerial shot of impenetrable rain forest, the kind we are familiar with from nature documentaries. But once you get closer, you realize that what you thought were tree-covered hills are in fact hummocks of moss set in a square frame. Moss isn’t just fun to have on your wall, it’s also very easy to take care of. And since it’s a plant, it really does improve the atmosphere and reduce toxins in the air. It also enhances a room’s acoustics, thanks to its sound absorbing properties. As a side effect of cleaner air and less noise, this fabulous wall decoration increases your well-being and your ability to concentrate. What more could you ask for? The moss is 100 percent natural and comes from certified farms, where it is harvested by hand and preserved using natural processes that allow it to continue happily filtering the air. Produced by hand by Dream in Green, based in Germany.

Dream in Green moss pictures are sound absorbant and extremely easy to care for. From € 99. Would you like to know more?

INTERVIEW

Vocal Attraction Franziska Focken has reinvented online dating. The difference: With her dating app W ayvs, you need to fall in love with the voice first ...

How did you come up with the idea? I think dating apps are pretty horrible. When I was single during the pandemic, there was no other way of meeting people, but I found the existing ones frustrating and impersonal. It takes more than a photo for the sparks to fly. How is your app different? On average, people spend about twelve hours a week on dating apps. Who has that kind of time? On Wayvs you get to know your date by hearing their voice, so you can tell in a few seconds whether or not you’re well matched. It’s a more efficient, more qualitative approach. Plus, talking to someone directly takes courage. If both sides have already invested something in the relationship, there are fewer mismatches. What if I don’t have a nice-sounding voice? Everyone has a nice voice. Our voices are as unique as our DNA and convey our personality – that’s what matters.

Is this noticeable among your users? Yes. Our average user is a 30-year-old graduate who is looking for something solid. I like to compare it to going out to eat: Fast food is okay, but what you really want is a decent meal. How many couples have you matched up? We’ve had more than 20,000 downloads and our match rate is 44 times better than T inder’s. There are some awesome couples out there.

Franziska Focken, 31, is taking the fight to Tinder. Download her Wayvs audio dating app from the App Store and Google Play.

And have you found someone yourself? I have. We’ve just come back from Paris.

INTERVIEW: CHRISTINA LIBUDA; PHOTO: JULIA ZIERER

How has the pandemic changed the way we date? Meeting in real life wasn’t possible, so apps became more important. In the U.S., 40 percent of couples now meet online. During the lockdown, the “corona effect” generated an increase in app usage. At the same time, people started looking for more sustainable relationships – quality rather than quantity.

NEWS FROM THE CEO

2021 - a real estate success story… to be continued

T

o answer this question you have to take into account a very wide variety of factors. It has to be emphasized, however, that in uncertain times and times of stock market volatility, real estate represents a stable investment. Low interest rates and a lack of alternative investment options further fuel this trend. Moreover, the pandemic has triggered an increased focus on one’s personal quality of life. Owning a safe, beautiful home has become even more important. But what concrete developments have there been in the international real estate markets, given this set of circumstances? A look to the U.S. and Canada shows that surplus demand has, once again, increased markedly. The resulting price hike is reflected in a 36-percent increase in property prices in Phoenix, Arizona, for example. In Victoria in British Columbia an estate was sold by the local Engel & Völkers team for more than 22 million Canadian dollars, around 18 million U.S. dollars – a new record in the area. Metropolises like New York City, which had experienced a temporary trend of increasing numbers of residents moving out to more rural areas, have made an impressive comeback: In October 2021, Manhattan chalked up a 43-percent increase in contractually agreed real estate transactions compared with the previous year. The luxury real estate market in particular remains extremely stable. The same holds true for the Balearics: International buyers simply love the sun-kissed Spanish islands in the Mediteranean. The number of sales to prospective international buyers increased by roughly 70 percent in the first half of 2021 compared with the year before; simultaneously, in many cases, the time properties spend on the market dropped by half. Our clients have often spent a noticeably larger amount of time in their vacation

properties than previously. The combination of excellent infrastructure and the pleasant Mediteranean climate also makes a vacation home the ideal place for remote working. Another Mediterranean destination which has enjoyed outstanding popularity is Greece. In 2021, residential real estate prices in the country continued their strong upward trend. The downtown Athens neighborhoods around the famous Acropolis and the affluent Kolonaki area, as well as the city’s northern suburbs and the Athens Riviera are particularly popular. The biggest winners, however, are the Greek Islands, and in particular the Cyclades which include Mykonos and the very latest hotspot: Paros. Prices in Paros have recently risen the most markedly – by up to 15 percent compared with previous months. The pandemic has not just changed our relationship with our homes, but also the way in which we work. The daily commute has been replaced by a far more flexible approach to work, which – in my view – will in the future be split between the office, the home office and co-working spaces. Instead of one single place of work, there will now be three locations that are suited to all individual professional requirements and situations. For example, working with a flexible project team or a client in a coworking space would be followed by a day in the home office, and then a day spent at the actual office with all the benefits of vital personal interactions with colleagues. We wanted to be able to meet the requirements of this trend now, so we expanded our license partner network to include Engel & Völkers Work Edition, an exclusive coworking concept, last year. I am delighted that its launch in the heart of Hamburg has been a great success, and can reveal that further locations are in the pipeline.

At the start of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring of 2020, there were pundits who predicted that it would cause a price crash in the international real estate markets. However, the opposite happened – 2021 was a truly record-breaking year for many destinations. What makes residential real estate markets so resistant to crises?

PRETTY COURAGEOUS!

Turning a crisis into an opportunity – on the following pages, we introduce some very inspiring personalities and businesses who have faced the pandemic with vision and courage.

With more people working from home, sweatpants have officially become part of the new office uniform. That loungewear can also be paired with elegance is the philosophy of Judith Dommermuth. he steps into her office in Montabaur, dressed in a striking low-key outfit consisting exclusively of pieces from her own collection: A sand-colored cashmere sweater, beige sweatpants – the only items not belonging to her Juvia brand are the pale brown suede boots. “What makes us totally unique is that we focus solely on loungewear and leisurewear,” explains the CEO with a smile as she sits down at her desk, taking a sip from her coffee mug. What used to be a revolutionary approach to fashion prior to the pandemic, has become the new way of dressing – an attitude the founder has lived by herself since over eight years. Cashmere-lined, luxuriously soft sweatshirts, T-shirts made of the purest cotton and, of course, sweatpants, available in six different fits in both patterned and plain-colored designs. Juvia is Judith Dommermuth’s brainchild and at the same time her go-to label for her everyday life: “Open up my wardrobe and you’ll find a few evening gowns – but everything else is Juvia!” What started as an idea for more comfort for women who still want to dress elegantly has turned into a strong brand. Every season Juvia offers its customers 380 items, all made in Portugal and designed to be combined with other pieces from the new and past collections. The growing interest in wearable outfits that are stylish enough to wear when working from home and still feel comfortable is an international phenomenon which has been accelerated even more with the outbreak of COVID. In the U.S. alone, sales of sweatpants rocketed by 80 percent in the first three months of the pandemic. Industry experts predict that global sales of loungewear will continue to rise to a staggering ten billion by 2026. In this fast-paced market, the German label is also witnessing a steady increase in demand: “Yes, we experienced very satisfactory growth over the past two years,” says the fashion entrepreneur.

Judith Dommermuth on her success: “A few years ago, I would’ve never even dared to dream that we would be where we are now.”

www.gg-magazine.com

GG: Ms. Dommermuth, even before the pandemic started, you were already considered an authority on loungewear and educated your customers that comfort and elegance aren’t mutually exclusive. How has the new reality, with working from home and Zoom meetings, affected your business? In addition to our core business with collections for women, we have seen an incredible growth in our men’s range. The turnover in this segment has doubled the past year! The reasons are quite simple. I believe that once the focus turned more towards life at home, men started asking themselves whether there wasn’t something more comfortable they could wear when working from home and still look stylish. Funnily enough, we realized that it was the wom-

39

en ordering those outfits for their partners. Designs like our loosely cut blazers made of sweatshirt jersey have been incredibly popular with men. The timing was just absolutely perfect for Juvia. Our online shop was coincidentally up and running shortly before the pandemic started, which was of course a crucial fact that enabled us to keep on performing well, despite the lockdowns. In the face of these changes, sentiments like the iconic quote by Karl Lagerfeld, “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants,” suddenly seem completely outdated. How have high-end streetwear designers like Virgil Abloh, who worked for the luxury group LVMH and sadly died last year, increased this trend and also made your label more visible? Casualwear today caters to a much broader audience. Happily, though, we started Juvia before the great buzz around leisurewear began. By the time the hype around high-fashion brands like Abloh’s Off-White really took off, we had already established a wide, appealing collection. When boutiques then were suddenly waking up to the trend, seeking affordable loungewear brands, we were the first elegant casualwear label in Germany that was able to deliver. Essentially, we were lucky to be ahead of the trend. Today sweatpants have become an integral part of every designer collection and firmly established and accepted as an “it” fashion piece. How do you personally realize that society has accepted sweatpants in every day life? Well, I can only say: people don’t stare at me in the supermarket anymore! (She laughs) Before the pandemic, I used to be the only person shopping in loungewear. Now it’s almost the opposite. I rarely see people standing in line at the checkout counter dressed in formal workwear. What makes your collection different? We focus exclusively and very consciously on loungewear and leisurewear. A casual but

“In my wardrobe you’ll find only my loungewear brand and a couple of evening dresses.“ JUDITH DOMMERMUTH

“It important to me that each item fits perfectly. That’s why we offer six different fits.“ JUDITH DOMMERMUTH is our choice of six different fits. Not every woman has the figure of an 18-year-old model, and we want everyone to feel great in our clothes. For example, if a customer likes our Slim Fit pants, then she knows that she will always be able find that style among our items, even months later and in a different collection. Or our Regular Fit, which has patch pockets on the back and hence looks more dressy than wearing the styles without pockets. The same applies to our tops. Alongside our Basics, we also have a range of Fashion Pieces, but ultimately the Basics account for roughly 75 percent of our sales. Who is your typical customer? We have a very broad target group. It starts with our Mini Me Kids Collection – my nine-yearold niece will make a fuss if she’s not allowed to wear Juvia pants to school. But equally, our fan base also very much includes someone like my grandmother, who used to love Juvia so very much. Juvia is truly ageless. Of course, younger customers will buy different styles than our older ones. When I sit down to design a piece, I always aim for the middle. But there still isn’t a single item for adults that I haven’t personally tried on before we produce it.

“As a model, I could observe and learn in the showrooms how to successfully pitch your collection to customers.”

You have always been and still are the fitting model for your own brand. The idea to launch your own loungewear range came twelve years ago, when you were working as a fashion model, f lying all over the world for work. How did you come up with the idea for Juvia? I have an identical twin sister, and when we were five years old we were booked to model in a commercial for the first time. We continued modeling when we were teenagers, later using our income to pay for our university education.

44

After our preliminary diploma – we both studied business management – we took a year off; afterwards, instead of continuing at university, we carried on modeling professionally. I learned so much about the fashion business in those years. During those times I wore sweatpants on a daily basis because they didn’t leave marks on your skin and also because I always craved the comfort factor and easily feel the cold. During those days I couldn’t find any brand I liked. The loungewear collections available in the U.S. at the time were either too brash and glittery or too sporty and stiff. I wanted something that was purist, elegant and low-key, really comfortable and soft on the skin. I soon realized that what I wanted didn’t exist! In 2013, you took the plunge and started with your first sample collection. Two men helped you birth the business idea that led to your company Juvia: your husband, Ralph Dommermuth, and your ex-husband (and present co-CEO) Bernd Berger. Can you explain?. By the end of my active modeling career, I had started organizing photo shoots for fashion companies as a sideline and briefly toyed with the idea of opening an advertising agency. But then my husband Ralph took me aside and said: “You’re always talking about this loungewear idea – what are you waiting for?” And then he said something that remains incredibly important for me: “There’s no shame in failing! But looking back and regretting not having tried would be a great pity.” That was the decisive nudge that gave me the courage to launch Juvia. Your ex-husband Bernd Berger helped you with the production of the first collection pieces. What was your biggest challenge at the beginning? Bernd comes from a family with a background in textiles and knows all about fabric qualities and technical processes. Since he was still involved in the family business when Juvia was launched, he recommended a freelance designer who helped me to bring my ideas alive, since I am not a designer by training. I managed to secure the very best showroom I knew from my modeling days for the next trade fair and thus immediately had contacts to the best buyers. But when the first 20 pieces were finished, I suddenly was convinced that the collection was not good enough to launch and so I decided to cancel the showroom and instead redesign the entire collection. Acting with such resolve was a decisive moment for me. I signed up a new designer, who is still with Juvia today, and I designed 40 new pieces that turned out perfect and could be mixed and matched beautifully. That collection was finally so well received that we immediately picked up orders from 42 boutiques.

DRESS: EVA POLESCHINSKI, BOOTS: VERSACE, DRESS OVER SHOULDER: JUVIA, CUFF: XENIA BOUS

still elegant look which ensures that, depending on how you combine the individual items, you’re always well dressed. If I combine a plain-colored set with elegant shoes and striking jewelry, it instantly makes the look super-sophisticated. If I pick an eye-catching pattern and team it up with sneakers and, for instance, a cap, then I have a flattering streetstyle outfit. In other words, you can dress the looks up and down to suit your mood. What’s really important is that all the items are absolutely functional and practical, for instance in that they wash well without losing their shape. But what makes us truly unique

it worked! Many intrigued customers came to the showroom with the ad in their hand, and a few days later we had signed 120 boutiques! Today, roughly eight years later, Juvia is sold in 20 countries, with Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland as our main markets. We run two showrooms of our own in Munich and Düsseldorf and are currently looking for a third in Zurich. Three years ago I paid back the loan to my husband. And today I really am grateful for his advice. I could look like the typical cliché: model tries her hand at fashion with her successful husband’s money. But I can instead look at myself in the mirror knowing that I have paid back everything plus interest (along with a bank loan that I had taken out as well). The business now pays for itself. Without my husband’s good advice – to expand quickly – and without my great team, it would have taken so much longer for our brand to grow. Is it true that Angela Merkel once asked you what loungewear is? (She laughs) Yes! I was once invited to a panel discussion at the chancellor’s office. When I explained to Ms. Merkel what I was doing with Juvia, she said: “Ah, that’s something I never have time for.” Actually, now that she has retired, I should send her a parcel!

You started Juvia with four friends in your Cologne apartment. Today you employ 38 people and sell through 850 stores. Where do you see yourself going with Juvia in the next ten years? I would never have dared to dream that we would be where we are now. To enable the company to keep pace with our dynamic growth we have just recruited some new members of staff who will be handling logistics, staff development and online activities. This is a culture change for us, but it is absolutely essential for our continued growth. As far as the future is concerned, I am torn between several options: We could expand into more countries, but on the other hand, I cherish more private time. For me, Juvia is still essentially a modern family business. And its primary purpose should be to bring joy – to our customers, to my employees and to myself. Would you like to know more?

High fashion meets loungewear. “In everyday life I like to wear my own label. But it doesn’t always have to be the total look. I love combining individual pieces with fashion pieces.” For the exclusive GG photo shoot with Gabo, we photographed Judith Dommermuth at “Hotel Provocateur” in Berlin.

Most people think digital marketing is the only way to generate success, but you used print ads in leading women’s magazines to draw attention to your new brand. What was the strategy behind this approach? I am still a firm believer in print! The second important piece of business advice also came from my husband. After the first collection had been so well received, he told me: “You’ve obviously nailed a demand – there are so many fashion brands out there. Now you need to market your brand!” I had invested all my savings from my modeling jobs in the sample collection and hoped that the rest would cover the production costs. I simply didn’t have the money to spend on marketing. So he said: “I’ll give you a loan at the standard interest rate.” At first I was a bit taken aback that my husband didn’t just give me the money. But he had a good explanation: “Later you’ll be proud knowing you achieved the success all by yourself.” So I ran campaigns in fashion magazines to coincide with the trade fair where we presented our second season. And

What pieces would you recommend for someone new to loungewear like Angela Merkel? Well, she’d probably need to familiarize herself with the whole concept at first, I would recommend entry level pieces such as our Loose Fit Sweatpants, which look a little dressier and can be turned up around the ankles. Perhaps in navy blue or a sandy color. I’d match that with a high-quality Cashmix sweater, very simple and purist, but so soft that you’ll never want to take it off.

UPWARD BOUND

This high-tech solution could be the future of food. Investors all around the world are suddenly backing vertical farming, a booming industry that the pandemic has accelerated. The clever idea: growing vegetables on city roofs and in supermarkets and restaurants – right where they’re sold. WORDS: Silke Bender 48

irst come the strawberries. On the roof of the Paris Trade Fair grounds in the Porte de Versailles neighborhood, gardeners are fanning out under still leaden skies. Their mission: fixing seedlings to tall, white columns reminiscent of vertebrae. Developed right here in France, these aeroponic columns make use of a technique in which the roots hang in the air and are constantly sprayed with a nutrient solution. They require no pesticides and only 10 percent of the usual amount of water in order to thrive. “It all still looks a bit sad now,” says Sophie Hardy. “But by May, at the latest, this will have turned into a lush, green oasis.” Hardy is the director of Nature Urbaine, an urban rooftop farm roughly the size of two soccer pitches – the largest in Europe. If all goes as planned, her farm will eventually produce up to three tons of fruits and vegetables a year that will be supplied directly to local residents, supermarkets, the neighboring Novotel and restaurants like the Le Perchoir, which is located on the same roof. As many as 156 plots are also rented out to private individuals for a year at a time. Unsurprisingly, these “garden plots 2.0” are snapped up quickly each growing season. The pandemic with its disrupted supply chains and partly empty shelves on the one hand, and the climate debate on the other, have created fertile ground for ideas that were still being derided ten years ago. “Our approach – bringing farms into the city and offering fresh, healthy produce with short supply chains – contributes to carbon neutrality and biodiversity. All of a sudden, this makes sense to everyone,” Sophie H ardy says. The approach taken by Berlin startup Infarm is far removed from this urban agricultural idyl. Infarm grows its fresh greens in futuristic glass cases with rotating strips of LED light. When Good Bank opened its first vertical farm-to-table restaurant in Berlin’s Mitte neighborhood in 2017, passers-by thought the glass cases of sprouting greens were an art installation. Today, the futuristic incubators glow in more and more supermarkets around Germany and shoppers can take home the herbs and lettuces grown in them, complete with their roots. In fact, Infarm now manages more than 1,400 of these mobile vertical farms in eleven countries. With roughly 1,000 employees and additional locations in the U.S., the Netherlands, France and Japan, the Berlin-based company has become a market leader in vertical farming. While Infarm declines to divulge any financial details, it has said that the pandemic alone has boosted its revenue by more than 200 percent. In two rounds of financing, the company was able to secure investments of 270 million dollars in 2020 and 2021 alone. The hypermodern “growing center” in Berlin’s Spandau district is lightyears away from the refurbished caravan in Berlin’s Kreuzberg neighborhood where the Israeli company founders Guy Galonska, his brother Erez and Erez’ partner Osnat Michaeli conducted their first experiments in 2013. Today, a former washing machine factory now houses one

of the 15 production sites in which the different parameters of the “growing recipes” are developed, tested and optimized with the aid of a data-driven approach. Once harvested, the nutritional value, yield and taste of the produce are analyzed to determine the ideal combination of variables. Only then are the plants shipped to supermarkets inside their glass cases as self-contained “farming units.” Vertical farming seems to have the potential to replace the trend towards organic produce in the food industry. According to a recent study from the U.S., this new market, whose global revenue was already estimated to be 4.3 billion dollars in 2021, looks poised to grow to up to 20 billion dollars by 2028. Indoor farms are popping up everywhere – a solution not just in times of pandemic. They could also prevent future food insecurity in the face of a human population estimated to rise as high as 9.7 billion by 2050 and increasingly frequent disastrous weather events. “Industrial agriculture is responsible for 17 percent of global carbon emissions. If we produce locally, we can focus on optimizing taste and quality, rather than on extending the shelf-life of a product being transported along the supply chain,” Guy Galonska said in an interview with the KfW investment and development bank. “We produce sustainably: All of our farms use 95 percent less water and 95 percent less soil than traditional agriculture, and we don’t use chemical pesticides. Our aim is to make our production processes carbon neutral.” If it was up to Dr. Nate Storey of San Francisco-based Plenty, space-saving indoor farms would completely replace traditional farming and greenhouses in the future. The agricultural engineer loves illustrating the advantages of vertical farming: “Nobody would stack the books in their library on the floor,” he once said. This way, “we can give the world back land”: the jungles of Borneo to the orangutans, the Amazon to the planet and the Midwest to the bison. Plenty’s partially automated farms have mostly been supply leading regional supermarkets in California, Wyoming and Washington State since 2014. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and other big financiers have so far invested more than 541 million dollars in the company, which is one of the current market leaders in the U.S. today Dr. Storey, however, is thinking much further ahead. He says that if we manage to grow the same nutritious, flavorful plants – sustainably and independent of climate, sun and air – all over the planet, we would also be able to feed ourselves on Mars. So already, the story has come full circle, because the foundations for vertical farming technology were laid at NASA in the 1980s. Its engineers stacked the first rows of hydroponic cases like bookshelves on the walls of a hyperbaric chamber left over from the Mercury space capsule. They wanted to research how to feed astronauts on long space missions. Would you like to know more?

“Flying with us is extraordinarily enjoyable and convenient, and gives you access to exclusive events.“ CARSTEN MICHAELIS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NETJETS EUROPE

NetJets is the world’s biggest and oldest private aviation company. It has 6,500 members and 760 jets that fly to 5,000 airports around the globe.

T

here are some offers one simply cannot refuse. Like a glamorous invitation from NetJets – the biggest private jet operator – for a trip from Art Basel in Switzerland to Monte Carlo for the annual Monaco Yacht Show. And, of course, my special trip gets off to a fabulous start, even days before we actually take off. I receive an elegant gift, delivered by courier: a fine Smythson leather luggage tag with my initials embossed on it. Prior to our flight, I learn that there are more perks to being a NetJets owner. I automatically turn into a VIP guest at the world’s most important art fair. This means I do not have to wait in line like other visitors but am instead whisked through each gate without any delays. All I have to do is show my Covid certificate. It’s the preview day of the world’s most renowned art show, before the official opening to the public and, of course, after a year’s hiatus, Art Basel is drawing large crowds again. But today, only VIPs and invited guests are permitted in by the exhibiting galleries who are showing their most valuable works of art, many of which will already be sold on this day. NetJets is celebrating its 20th year as one of the biggest sponsors of the famous art fair. During those few days, the private jet company treats their owners to exclusive dinner parties to which some of the exhibiting artists are also invited. In the evening we are part of one of these elegant soirees in the place to be during Art Basel – the restaurant of the five-star Les Trois Rois hotel, where the gallerist Johann König from Berlin and the multimedia artist Austyn Weiner from Miami are both present. NetJets – it seems – has every reason to celebrate. The pandemic has driven the demand for private jet travel to unforeseen levels. The worldwide biggest private jet operator, which was originally established by the American businessman Richard Santulli 58 years ago and acquired by Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. in 1998, faces record demand of more than 350 percent. “A surprisingly large number of people have come to appreciate the value of our concept and have become owners since the Covid crisis began,” explains Carsten Michaelis, Executive Director Sales & Marketing for NetJets Europe. “We don’t just offer a hygienically safe environment, what you get is absolute freedom from the limited flight schedules that commercial airlines offer.” Demand has exploded since 2020. The fractional ownership company (members become part owners either by buying shares in a jet or they acquire credits for

several flights) will expand their existing fleet by 125 new jets this year and has plans to hire a further 300 pilots. As a safeguard against such dynamic growth, the company is also investing heavily in its own resources: Apart from spending two and a half billion dollars on new aircraft, NetJets will be investing a yearly sum of 80 million dollars in crew training alone. The company employs only the most experienced pilots, and they are always assigned to the same type of jet. Further training courses are carried out regularly at the company’s five-million-dollar training center at its European headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal. On the day of my flight, a NetJets limousine driven by a chauffeur pulls up at my hotel and takes me straight to the “Challenger 350” – a very popular jet that seats up to eight people. On board, I am greeted by flight attendant Rolanda who has been with NetJets for 21 years. After I take my plush seat, she hands me a glass of chilled champagne and some delicious macarons. Meanwhile, Paul, our pilot, who has been flying with NetJets for over 17 years, explains the exact route we will be taking to Nice. Shortly after, we take off like a rocket at a super steep angle. To avoid any bad weather, we continue flying at an altitude of about 13,700 meters. After a soft landing, we board a waiting helicopter for Monaco. Without wasting precious time with having to change planes like on a commercial flight, we arrive shortly after on the glittering Côte d’Azur. Having departed from Basel only two hours earlier, I have saved a lot of time and stress and am able to admire the latest yachts at Europe’s biggest exhibition of private boats, The Monaco Yacht Show. It’s a popular destination: Over the course of the four-day event to which 30,000 visitors are expected, a total of 168 NetJets flights will be landing here. To encourage sustainability within the industry, NetJets began carbon-neutral operations back in 2012. The company also participates in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme. Recently, NetJets began investing as one of the first aviation companies in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), made from used cooking oil and household waste. SAF generates 80 percent fewer carbon emissions than conventional aircraft fuel. A few weeks later, I am taking an overbooked commercial flight and realize shamefully that this trip has spoiled me: Flying private with NetJets is just so much nicer! Would you like to know more?

CRISIS DRIVEN INNOVATORS

It takes guts and visionary ideas to find the answers to what people might need in this brand new and ever changing world. From decluttering concepts to home cooking sets out of the box. Meet some of the game changers. WORDS: Julia Dettmer

ELON MUSK He is one of the most innovative leaders of our time. Just recently, Time magazine declared him “Person of the Year,” stating that few people have more influence than the Tesla CEO and Space X entrepreneur. The 50-year-old is also the world’s wealthiest person, his worth estimated at roughly 280 billion dollars. When car rental company Hertz announced it would be ordering 100,000 Teslas by the end of 2022, the company’s shares sky-rocketed, making Musk 36 billion dollars richer overnight. Musk wouldn’t be Musk if he didn’t find ways to invest his exorbitant wealth. In early November 2021, he polled Twitter about whether to sell ten percent of his Tesla shares. The majority naturally thought he should and Musk kept his word, offloading more than 16 billion dollars’ worth of shares. Musk’s space tourism activities have earned him plenty of criticism, leading David Beasley, head of the UN World Food Programme, to challenge him (and Jeff Bezos) to donate six billion dollars each to the UNWFP to help end world hunger. Musk countered that if Beasley could explain to him exactly how this amount of money would help, he wouldn’t hesitate for a single second. Maybe Covid-19 has also boosted Musk’s generosity.

37-year-old helped us to overcome our general indolence and turned tidiness into a trend. The Japanese organizing consultant and bestselling author created a show with Netflix called “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” Episode after episode, she helped people create order by following her KonMari method, now also a brand. The method is based on a simple principle in which you throw everything into one big pile. Picking up each thing in turn, you ask yourself: Does this item bring me joy? If the answer is yes, you find a permanent place for it in your closet. If the answer is no, you give it away. During the pandemic, millions of viewers felt the urge to rid themselves of unnecessary possessions. In 2019, Kondo received two Emmy nominations, and “sparking joy” became a household expression. A wonderful side effect: As the series climbed to number 1 among Netflix’s non-fiction releases, U.S. charities were inundated with clothing donated by all the busy tidy-uppers uncluttering their closets.

MASTERCLASS The concept is both simple and ingenious. Experts and international stars from different professions and areas of interest offer lectures and tutorials pre-recorded on videos, which anyone can access through a large online media library – for a fee, 24/7, anywhere in the world. If you want to learn something about filmmaking, for instance, James Cameron will teach you. If you’re looking for creative inspiration and want to improve your leadership skills, Anna Wintour can help. Songwriting with Alicia Keys, cooking with Gordon Ramsay, writing with Dan Brown, performing with RuPaul (photo) – the list of tutors reads like red-carpet arrivals at the Academy Awards. It all started quite unglamorously. In fact, the online education platform that reached an estimated worth of 2.5 billion euros after several giant rounds of financing was conceived by students David Rogier and Aaron Rasmussen, who established it as Yanka Industries in 2014. Originally offering only three classes, it began operating as Masterclass in 2015 and now boasts more than 130 tutorials and over 1,000 videos. Demand is huge: During lockdown, ten times as many people took advantage of the courses than only a year earlier. 63

HELLO FRESH Subscribers to this food delivery service choose

their meals online or via the app and specify how often they would like to cook. A meal kit containing just the right amount of each ingredient, along with a recipe, is sent straight to their home. During lockdown, meal kits really hit the spot, especially because it saved a trip to the supermarket. Even before celebrating its tenth anniversary not long ago, the Berlin-based digital platform joined the DAX, the index of Germany’s 40 biggest companies on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. In the third quarter of 2021, order volumes reached nearly 28 million, a year-on-year increase of almost 42 percent. Today, Hello Fresh delivers meal kits in 16 countries where nearly seven million customers are cooking up a storm. Half of them currently reside in the U.S. The founders of the one-time startup likely sometimes pinch themselves to make certain they’re not dreaming.

JEFF BEZOS In 1994 computer scientist Jeff Bezos had a brilliant idea: Why not open a bookstore on the internet? The rest is history and Amazon is the top dog among e-commerce retail platforms. Bezos stood down last year as CEO – on July 5, the day the company was founded, but he still heads the Amazon board as executive chair. Thanks to Covid-19, he’s the world’s second-richest person: Nobody profited from the crisis like he did. In the first few weeks of the pandemic, Amazon announced that it was hiring 100,000 people in the U.S. And in the first three months of 2021, sales figures topped those for 2020 by 44 percent while year-on-year profits were up by a whopping 220 percent. Most profitable of all: the income generated through outside sellers. Bezos doesn’t just fill his own pockets, he enables third-party sellers without an online platform of their own to sell their products via Amazon. But the booming online retail business has come in for its share of criticism: Overworked drivers, poor working conditions in the warehouses and excessive packaging waste are all things that still need to be addressed. Bezos’ private life is back on track. After 25 years of marriage, he and his wife, novelist MacKenzie Scott, got divorced in 2019, and his relationship with television host Lauren Sanchez became public the same year. On the giving front, Bezos has been utterly trumped by his ex-wife, who donated more than 8.6 billion dollars to charity in 2020 alone, some of which went to those affected by Covid-19.

PHILLIP LIM When the corona pandemic kicked off, designer Phillip Lim kicked back by hitting the reset button. His

label 3.1 Phillip Lim was approaching its 15th anniversary – usually a good reason to rejoice – but the closed shops forced him to rethink the celebrations. “In this moment, we all have the ability and the permission to reset. We don’t have a choice,” he stated categorically. First, Lim launched a massive online archive sale, using the proceeds to at least cover his employees’ health insurance costs. Next, he turned his menswear collection on its head. Under normal circumstances, the pieces that come down the runway at his shows don’t actually hit the stores until a good six months later. Lim decided to sell his menswear collection as a limited capsule right at the beginning of the season. He also devoted himself to two projects that are very close to his heart. First, the designer has doubled up on his sustainability efforts. “We need to produce less but make it as good as possible,” is the goal he has set himself. The second mission is #stopasianhate. Since the corona pandemic began, there has been a massive rise in anti-Asian hate crimes in the U.S. Lim wants to stop violence against minorities and has joined forces with four other Asian-born heavyweights from the New York fashion world to form the superheroes “House of Slay.” (photo)

ZOOM And suddenly, everything went “Zoom!” In 2011, when Eric Yuan founded a company called Zoom Video Communications, he struggled to find investors. The market for video call software seemed saturated, dominated by Skype (younger readers may not know this, but “to skype” was once a common verb). Fast forward to the present, and Zoom has become an integral part of the lives of billions of people around the world. Business meetings and school lessons shifted to virtual rooms during the pandemic, as did children’s birthday parties and memorial services. In March 2020, practically overnight, 200 million users used the software to connect; three months previously, Zoom had “only” had 10 million users. The company rapidly consolidated its position as the easiest application to use, with a suite of useful functions. The company’s stock market value is now more than 40 billion U.S. dollars. Since the flotation in 2019, everyone has been able to own a piece of Zoom; shares cost around 160 euros each and there are 298 million shares to be had.

be wrong. Rupi Kaur, a young Canadian poet of Indian heritage, sits at the top of the list. In 2013, she started publishing her work online: simple drawings with a few short verses about love, loss and femininity, written in a clear, bold style that speaks instantly to the emotions. The pandemic triggered a real passion for poetry, which the 29-year-old explained in an interview: “I think that during times like this, artists and thinkers and makers get to work.” Creating, she says, is a form of processing and reflection, which is why increasing numbers of writers are publishing volumes of poetry. Kaur herself has published three exceptionally popular books, which have been translated into over 42 languages and have sold millions. Her debut, “Milk and Honey,” even overtook Homer’s epos “Odyssey” to become the best-selling poetry book of all time. Her third collection, “Home Body,” was published during the pandemic and instantly became a bestseller. 70

DANIEL HUMM A Swiss cook goes to New York and becomes chef at a gourmet restaurant… What sounds like the

start of a joke is actually the story of Daniel Humm, who heads the three Michelin-starred foodie spot Eleven Madison Park in Manhattan. The EMP is lauded as one of the best restaurants in the U.S., and even held the top spot worldwide in 2017. The pandemic hit Humm hard. He had to let all his employees go and closed down for 15 months. However, Humm used the forced hiatus to come up with new ideas, opening a soup kitchen for impoverished locals and launching the “Eleven Madison Truck” which delivers 2000 meals to food-insecure districts every week. This past June, Humm reopened EMP and announced a bold culinary revolution: EMP is now a fully vegan restaurant. It was a headline-sparking decision in the haute cuisine world, but 15,000 reservations in the week after reopening prove that many are prepared to follow Humm’s path, despite the menu price of 335 dollars. Other starred restaurants such as Geranium in Copenhagen have also adopted this new trend and banished meat from their menu.

DRAKE Hip-hop, hooray! Due to corona restrictions, it has been practically impossible to catch rapper Drake live

on stage, but he seems to have made up for it by turning up the volume on virtual stages instead. In 2020 and 2021, the Canadian-born musician was one of the most streamed artists globally, putting him in the excellent company of BTS, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Billie Eilish. Drake is not someone given to hiding his light. While other artists were modest and postponed their releases, the rapper amped up the bragging, releasing his latest single “Toosie Slide” with a video that showcased his glitzy 100-million dollar mansion in Toronto. To give an indication of the scale of Drake’s success: In 2020 on Spotify, the world’s biggest streaming platform, the 35-year-old notched up five billion streams. He was the first artist to pass the 50-billion-streams mark. Drake’s popularity also helped Spotify to gain 100 million new users over the course of the pandemic.

MALCOLM & MARIE “This isn’t a love story but a story about love,” announces the trailer. The film in question is “Malcolm and Marie,” a weighty production released by Netflix last February. It is the work of the latest director wunderkind, Sam Levinson, whose film “Assassination Nation” and the series “Euphoria” were widely and enthusiastically acclaimed. Because the production of “Euphoria” had to be paused during lockdown, but the crew and actors were eager to continue working, Levinson wrote a script that could be filmed during the pandemic. It was the first Hollywood film to be made entirely during the coronavirus pandemic and was shot in a very limited location – a house in Carmel – by a team in quarantine. The whole production was top secret and was made for a minimalist budget of 2.5 million dollars. Starring Zendaya and John David Washington, this relationship drama has a fascinating urgency, due in no small part to the black-and-white color palette and inherent theatricality. Netflix shelled out 30 million dollars for it and obviously had the right instinct: “Malcolm & Marie” became one of the most streamed films of 2021. 74

PHOTOS: AA FILM ARCHIVE / ALAMY STOCK PHOTO (1), LALA BERLIN (1)

LALA BERLIN Even at the heart of the pandemic, Leyla Piedayesh demonstrated her surefire instinct for trends. The creative director of the label Lala Berlin was one of the first to produce face masks that picked up on the style of her brand, and they were a runaway success. Not that Piedayesh made a profit; instead, she donated all the proceeds. In only six months, she raised 100,000 euros in support of local NGOs dedicated to helping children, youngsters and women. “Domestic violence is a persistent social problem that is growing, especially due to the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, and its effects are striking. As a women-led company with a strong commitment to social justice, we are responding to this crisis to the best of our ability,” reads the designer’s official statement. The project also very much included her commitment to sustainability, as all the masks were made using recycled remnants. Hats off and masks on!

AIRSTREAM Sleek, rounded, silver and aerodynamic: An Airstream is instantly recognizable. No other trailer em-

bodies quite the same wanderlust and sense of adventure as this American icon – and none surpasses its inherent coolness. During the pandemic, as we were pinned down in one place, interest in Airstreams really took off, symbolizing as they do freedom and the ability to get up and go, leaving the masses behind. The demand for luxury trailer travel is so great that some models have a waiting list of up to a year. This trend is reflected in the sales figures: From spring 2020 to summer 2021, the number of orders received by the parent company Thor jumped by a record-breaking 550 percent, a testament to the all-encompassing desire for independence and flexibility during the pandemic. Airstreams have been manufactured in Ohio since 1952, when Wally Byam had the dream of designing a lightweight trailer that would glide aerodynamically through the wind. His vision was to unite a unique design with exceptional craftsmanship, and his legacy is continued by the company and its 800 employees.

KHABY LAME Khaby who? Khaby “the biggest TikToker in the world” Lame, that’s who! Senegalese-born Lame, who lives in Italy, has over 124 million fans, making him the most popular male TikTok star. He started his channel in 2020, after being laid off from his factory job, in an attempt to keep himself amused during lockdown. So how do you go about becoming so wildly popular with Gen Z followers? Lame had a very simple, but brilliant idea: The 21-year-old makes short videos in which he mocks the strange “life hacks” posted by other social media users by performing the same task, but in a much easier and straightforward way, without saying anything. For example: a TikToker gets her blouse caught in the car door while getting out and decides to cut herself free with a pair of scissors. Lame parodies her with his signature dead-pan expression, by simply opening the car door and walking away. Short clips like these have made the likable comedian a social media superstar who can now command up to 20,000 dollars for a single post. 78

ADDISON RAE Only 21 years old and already a few million in her bank account: Addison Rae is living the dream of most teenagers. The social media influencer, who grew up in Louisiana, discovered her passion for dancing at the tender age of six. In 2019, she dropped out of college and went on the conquer the social media platform TikTok with her cheerful, feel-good dance videos. Her plan worked out, she expanded her business to Instagram and attracted millions of new fans in next to no time: more than 86.1 million on TikTok, over 40.2 million on Instagram. She has reportedly already amassed a nest egg of five million dollars from the advertising revenue she generates through her channels and collaborations. Rae’s incredible online popularity caught the eye of Netflix, which gave the influencer the lead role in “He’s All That,” a remake of the comedy “She’s All That.” Rae can also be found on Spotify, where the talented star hosts a successful podcast called “Mama knows best” alongside her mother Sheri. Naturally, she has also launched her own makeup line. So what’s next – Rae fashion, Rae food, Rae music? Expect more from the master of self-promotion!

cle-centric Amsterdam? Not really… In 2009, brothers Ties and Taco Carlier came up with the idea of designing the ideal city bike. With the first VanMoofs you still had to pedal yourself but were certain to attract jealous looks as you moved forward. A VanMoof is instantly recognizable on account of its revolutionary frame design with the integrated lights. A couple of design prizes later, the label expanded its range to include sleek electric models. To date, 200,000 of these highly covetable bikes have been sold around the globe. There are VanMoof stores in 40 countries, from Finland to Japan, and also online. The company is one of the fastest-growing businesses in Europe. The high quality standards are also reflected behind the scenes: design, production, sales, servicing – VanMoof handles everything itself, an radical approach in the bicycle industry. Sales doubled during the pandemic from 40 million (2019) to 80 million euros (2020), showing that the brand is clearly pedaling in the right direction.

ADRIENE MISHLER “Lots of love in, lots of love out” – anyone who has ever stretched out on a mat in front of one of Adriene Mishler’s online yoga videos will have heard this sentence repeatedly. It is the YouTube yoga queen’s breathing mantra. No other yoga instructor has more followers (over 10 million), no other has the perfection and easy-going charm of Texas-born Mishler. In 2012, she posted the first of what are now over 500 videos. Her approach was highly professional. She analyzed the search behavior of YouTube users to serve up videos that were a perfect match for what they wanted. Today, the 37-year-old brings together yogis from all over the world and has a sponsorship deal with Adidas. So what’s her secret? Mishler, who trained as an actor, is authentic and, at the same time, knows exactly how to perform in front of the camera and when to make a joke. Her dog Benji generates extra love points. In every video the shaggy Australian Cattle Dog snoozes next to the mat or bumbles through the frame. For many, the 30-Day Yoga Journeys became an anchor in the everyday reality of Covid-19, and Mishler gained six million followers during the pandemic. 81

ontana captures the original spirit of the American West like hardly any other state in the US. Between the mighty peaks of the Rocky Mountains and the dramatic formations of the Badlands, a richly laden treasure trove of natural wonders awaits here. Crystal-clear lakes, colorful mountain meadows and encounters with rare breeds of animal all make this fertile land a uniquely joyful experience in the summer months. Snow is guaranteed come winter here, with temperatures averaging well below freezing. The region’s rich mineral resources have earned it the nickname “Treasure State”. Well before European settlers arrived in this mountainous terrain, Native Americans were hunting buffalo up on the prairie. These days, visitors flock here to pursue all kinds of outdoor activities, from fly fishing and horseback riding to river rafting. There are also countless hiking routes, including the historic Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, to name just one. It traverses the northern states, commemorating the first US overland expedition. Surrounded by all this beauty, in the heart of the Bitterroot Valley in the southwest corner of Montana, lies this ultimate Western Farmhouse nestled on a stunning 17-acre estate. Within the exclusive community known as the Stock Farm Club, the breathtaking property presents a luxury retreat like no other. The private club, born from the vision of entrepreneur Charles Schwab and his passion for nature and golf, lies secluded in the hills above the town of Hamilton. The centerpiece of the farm is the championship golf course designed by the renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio. A path leads from the grounds of the Stock Farm Club itself along past beautifully tended trees and shrubs towards the magnificent estate. In the center of the circular drive, a dramatic water feature welcomes guests on arrival. The exterior, with its fine craftsmanship and timelessly elegant design, gives further clues as to the special calibre of the property.

The 25,000-square-foot main house is set in private grounds that boast a large pond, as well as an artisanal stream, and a four-stall horse barn. The dream of life as a modern-day cowboy or cowgirl, with your own horses in the stable building, comes alive here. Custom stained glass doors lead the way into the formal entry and inviting living area of this magnificent home. A one-of-a-kind Frontier Ironworks chandelier, massive floorto-ceiling river stone fireplace and cathedral ceilings with complex open beams all evoke the rustic ambience of the historic great lodges of America’s national parks. This elegant room is complemented by the adjoining formal dining room, which opens onto a wraparound blue stone patio ideal for entertaining. The commercial grade kitchen forms a harmonious complement to the interior layout. The opulent owner’s suite is privately tucked away on the main level and features a large bedroom with a striking fireplace, a bay window and fabric walls that create luxurious atmosphere. The en suite bathroom boasts a Jacuzzi, exquisite marble countertops, and beautiful natural sunlight. A private library with built-in floorto-ceiling shelving and comfortable seating adds an extra sense of coziness. Floating Habitat

The prospect of traveling safe from large crowds has fueled the demand for 30-meter yachts and bigger. The first zero-emission superyacht VY-01 is designed to make the future of private yachting sustainable. The concept for this huge, modern vessel is being developed by the renowned German architecture and design studio 3deluxe. Its creators have more than a private investment for its owner in mind. Rather, they envision an innovative, educational vessel full of new, inspiring features. For example: a greenhouse and a vegetable garden designed to help protect the climate and appeal to nutrition-conscious yacht owners. A desalination unit provides the additional water required for the plants. This unit, along with the air-conditioning and the lights on board are all powered by a photovoltaic system located on the roof and the outer walls of the vessel. Measuring 110 meters in length, the environmentally friendly VY-01 features sensor-controlled louvers on either side that regulate the climate on the upper decks as well as the amount of light coming in. The vessel’s streamlined shape reduces the drag produced by wind and waves. Inside the vessel, traditional elements of yacht design have been replaced with visionary, nature-oriented concepts. The unusually bright, loft-like areas between the garden, living room, bar and greenhouse create a feeling of airiness and space. On board, you can tend to the vegetable garden, visit the spa area, attend online business meetings or enjoy your time with friends – in that order or whenever you like, all on the high seas. And at night, you can go to sleep looking up at the sky, because the open-topped master bedroom is located underneath the glass ceiling of the enormous greenhouse. Would you like to know more?

Private yachts are in hot demand ever since lockdowns became part of our new reality. The next big thing: a hydrogen and solar-powered superyacht with a greenhouse for growing vegetables.
