WELCOME

S

ustainability is an issue that concerns us all. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, we must not forget to try and find new ways to ensure we leave behind a healthy planet for our children and grandchildren. Over the past few months and much to

my growing astonishment, I have realized how many meetings can easily be conducted from my home office, supported by new digital tools such as Zoom. The amount of work that I was able to get through in this manner has persuaded me to scale down my travels significantly and get on a plane only when it is strictly necessary – even in post-COVID-19. Because of my great passion for houses, I am, of course, intrigued by any developments in the field of sustainable architecture whose sole aim is to increase efficiency. Whether you look at the amount of water or energy used, or the choice of building materials, the more efficiently things are done, the greener the resulting building is considered to be. The work of the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, whom we profile in this edition of GG, is an impressive example of how green architecture can also be a great aesthetic success. Kuma has a predilection for using wood, a renewable resource he considers to be the building material of the future. It is also important to be aware how one can integrate sustainability into one’s everyday life. At our finca in Mallorca, we increasingly try to eat locally produced food. We grow Mediterranean vegetables in our garden, make our own olive oil and even grow grapes for making red wine. Knowing that all these products did not have to be shipped halfway across the globe to end up on our table is a great feeling. Our clients’ wishes run along similar lines. When looking for a new home, they prefer different solutions for recovering energy: from having their own water treatment system to choosing properties that allow them to spectacularly stunning green property on the vacation island of Ibiza. On the following pages of GG, you will find many exciting articles whose

WELCOME

At last!

We are super-excited to present our new and relaunched GG – all wrapped up in an entirely new design! But that’s not all. From now on, each issue will feature more in-depth news and market information. In a regular column, Engel & Völkers CEO Sven Odia will keep you up to date with his personal insights into the real estate market. In addition, you can now bring every ad in the For Sale section alive. How does that work? Just switch on your camera on your mobile device and scan the QR code at the bottom of each real estate ad. Voilà – the web version of your chosen property will appear along with additional pictures, videos and more information. In line with our brand-new look, we are introducing you to a host of personalities whose innovative ideas about sustainable solutions are turning the world as we know it upside down. Meet Anya Hindmarch, who returned to her company as CEO earlier this year (after buying back 50 percent of shares from her investor Javad Marandi) and launched a collection of handbags made from recycled plastic bottles, leading the way in circular thinking – using existing materials rather than creating new ones. Travel with us to secluded, sustainable Bawah Island, meet environmental activist Sir David Attenborough, enjoy the Asian aesthetic of the dreamy buildings star architect Kengo Kuma is creating and learn how Oatly, the small Swedish company that has just been valued at 2 billion dollars, turned oat milk into a highly desirable lifestyle product.

We hope you’ll enjoy the new GG!

Michaela Cordes

A massive PR stunt with a shocking message: To launch her I Am A Plastic Bag collection, Hindmarch filled her London shops with 90,000 used plastic bottles – the amount of plastic that is consumed worldwide in just six seconds.

When looks are misleading

“Ugly by nature” is the slogan of the Copenhagen-based startup GRIM, which rescues three-legged carrots and funny looking potatoes from going to waste. Strict beauty standards prevent such vegetables from ever seeing the inside of a supermarket, so they are generally destined to go straight to the dump. Each year, some 1.3 billion tons of fresh fruit and vegetables worldwide are discarded despite the fact that growing them uses about one quarter of the water that is required to produce food. In 2018, to oppose this crazy practice, Petra Kaukua and Carolin Schiemer started GRIM, a subscription food service that delivers boxes of organic fruit and vegetables to people’s doorsteps in Denmark. The concept – which also exists in Germany (Etepetete), Switzerland (UglyFruits) and the U.S. (Misfits Market) – has firmly taken root: So far, GRIM has rescued 230 tons of food, boasts more than 2,500 subscribers and expects to achieve sales of approximately one million euros in 2020.

The GRIM box (made of recycled cardboard) comes in three sizes, starting at 2-4 kg, and costs approx. €13/month.

INTERVIEW

Takeout with a difference

René Hallen (47) produces reusable and recyclable food containers made of ocean-bound plastic. You used to be a fashion photographer – how did you b ecome a green entrepreneur?   Free diving is my hobby and when I moved to L.A. from France seven years ago, I finally had the chance to go diving in the Pacific rather than in a Parisian pool. In the ocean, I was confronted directly with the negative effects of ocean plastics and how they impact our environment, and I wanted to do something about it – also for my son, so that the earth he inherits isn’t completely ruined. I researched the subject very carefully for two years until we – designer Pascal Schaller, biotech engineer Adrian Colesberry and I – had honed our idea to perfection. We officially launched our company Buoy late last year. Where did you get the idea to produce food containers?  Ordering takeout is extremely widespread in the U.S. Instead of cooking, people have their food delivered. It’s not just that the usual foam or plastic-lined containers – which only appear to be earth-friendly – are catastrophic for the environment. The problem is that they’re disposable and only used once. After they’re thrown away they seep into the oceans and into our groundwater as microplastic.

Was it easy to get potential customers interested in your idea?  The coronavirus slowed things down and sped them up for us simultaneously. It seems that a fundamental change took place when everything shut down. We have a customer in Canada who already had a citywide deposit system in place but was using new plastic from China, a ghost kitchen in L.A. that supplies 25 vendors, all of whom want to use our food packaging, and a delivery service in New York. It’s a good start.

Founder René Hallen and his takeout containers made of oceanbound plastic. Crowdfunding for the water bottle (top) is scheduled to begin soon. Details: www.buoy.eco.

When will the first takeout food arrive in Buoy containers?  As soon as the supply chains are up and running, we’ll start the machines.

TEXT: SILKE BENDER

What’s better about what Buoy does?  We collect ocean-bound plastic in coastal areas of Haiti or Mexico that don’t have an effective waste disposal system and then process the raw material in L.A. The final product is food-safe and so clean that it can be reused again and again. If it breaks, it can be easily melted down and recycled. Our deposit system ensures a closed-loop lifecycle with zero waste.

NEWS FROM THE CEO

There’s no place like home

The earliest human shelters were primarily made to protect their inhabitants from the weather and from hostile attacks. This has fundamentally changed. Today, there’s much more to the definition of home than four walls and a roof. ishing to become more self-sufficient with w regard to energy production and water supply. Growing your own organic fruit and vegetables is becoming more popular too, and it’s something that fulfills two requirements at once: serving as a gardening hobby and a way of achieving food self-sufficiency. 3 Being together is better than being alone: rediscovering the countryside In turbulent times such as these, many students and young professionals are returning to the nest to seek safety and security with their parents. Back home, their old bedrooms provide a temporary haven of retreat with the added bonus of renewed parental care. This development could turn into a new appreciation for life in the country and result in an upward valuation of areas outside major urban centers. 4 Individualized architectural solutions Generously apportioned interior spaces where work and living areas merge have been appealing to prospective buyers for a long time. But in the current situation, where people are increasingly working from home, the desire for privacy has grown, even within one’s own four walls. As a result, people are looking for real estate that features an extra office or other type of separate room – like a playroom for children, for instance. In our view, demand will only increase for properties with architectural solutions that satisfy a client’s specific wishes. As things develop over the coming weeks and months it remains to be seen whether these changes in our working and social lives are here to stay – and to what extent the trends we have described endure and continue to unfold. What’s certain is that, as a result of the crisis, people will be looking for a safe, secure, comfortable and attractive place to live – because there’s no place quite like home. I feel very optimistic looking forward, and I’m certain that together, we will overcome every challenge that comes our way.

home offers protection, warmth and security. It is also a space that reflects its owner’s personal preferences and needs, and can be designed accordingly. In times of the coronavirus pandemic, we tend to spend more time than ever in our home, and this haven of retreat that we have created for ourselves takes on a whole new meaning. Behavioral restrictions such as social distancing, which will likely accompany us for some time to come, also affect the way we live. Based on our observations over the last few months, we can see the following trends emerging: 1 The importance of entertaining and providing entertainment in a private setting One of the most important criteria when searching for a new home in the luxury real estate segment is the prospect of a sizable piece of land to go with the new property and no immediate neighbors. But the property should still be close to important infrastructure such as healthcare facilities. It should also feature the latest standard in technical equipment, enabling the client to work productively from home at any time. And since people are now spending more and more of their social and leisure time in the company of select friends at their home or in the grounds or garden, the property should fulfill all the necessary requirements for entertaining at home. As a result of this trend, we will also be seeing a rise in demand for exclusive facilities such as gyms, home cinemas, libraries, as well as pool and spa areas. 2 Independence and self-sufficiency – not just in times of emergency The desire for independence and self-sufficiency is gaining momentum as well. The crisis has exposed the extent to which governments can be dependent on other countries for certain products and how difficult it sometimes is for them to supply people with what they need. This has produced quite a bit of anxiety. So it is perfectly understandable that clients are i ncreasingly

We are also seeing a trend in yachting. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased many people’s wish for privacy and protection. Those who previously enjoyed the proximity to water on a luxurious cruise ship have increasingly chosen to spend time on a private yacht, with all the flexibility that that choice offers. Engel & Völkers has been brokering sales of exclusive yachts since 2007 and is constantly expanding its market presence. Engel  & Völkers Yachting is represented in Antibes, Monaco, Bodrum, Malta and – since early 2020 – Newport Beach on the U.S. West Coast.

Sometimes all you need is someone to take you by the hand and show you what to do. This is what blogger and sustainability guru Christine Liu (www. eco-age.com) does with her book Sustainable Home – a stylish and wonderfully practical guide to making your household more environmentally friendly. Her 18 step-by-step projects and useful tips will help readers discover for themselves how to create a more eco-friendly home environment. Ideas and projects include making organic toothpaste, growing an herb garden and learning how to switch to renewable energy sources.

Although we try to get it right by separating our trash, buying organic and avoiding plastic, it often feels like we’re not doing enough. In her book Live Green, Jen Chillingsworth explains how to adopt a green way of living within just one year. She presents 52 ideas connected with housekeeping, gardening, nutrition, fashion and lifestyle to help readers make more conscious decisions and change their daily habits. In the long term, this is the way each one of us can contribute to protecting our environment. A common-sense book that never gets preachy, it’s guaranteed to make a difference.

Scrambling for last-minute deals and ticking off endless sightseeing lists may be the typical way to do things these days, but it's stressful and hardly a good way to unwind. In her book Slow Travel, Penny Watson features some extraordinary tours to the tops of mountains as well excursions through deserts and jungles. But all of them, she admits, are really journeys of self-discovery. In fact, her book is much more about slowing down, learning self-awareness and practicing mindfulness than anything else. But it does include a Buddhist temple in Bhutan and a pizza-making course in Italy.

ADLER – an eagle with magical powers

ADLER Lodge RITTEN, with its light and airy junior suites and chalets. Private, luxurious retreats, where the essential happens nonchalantly, because it’s just part of the standard offering. Like a cherry on top of a coconut kiss. And the Renon, that natural paradise near Bolzano, in South Tyrol. The entrance to this Garden of Eden is through a weathering steel gate bearing the ADLER name and logo. There is a spacious underground car park, and the lobby welcomes me with a sumptuous atmosphere. It really feels like a retreat, a cocoon of beauty. After making myself at home in my chalet, the question arises: a visit to the private sauna, or a dip in the 35°C water of the infinity pool? With my eyes fixed on the Dolomites, I glide through the water. The chalet itself is extremely spacious and adorned with finely crafted wood of

nderstated beauty. The ambience is airy and u yet homely. From the lighting to the mirror above the wash basin, everything has been designed with the guest in mind. This is not a place to stay in. It’s a place to live in. The kitchen is run by Hannes Pignater. Guests can choose between a 5-course menu or dining à la carte. The whole menu bears Hannes Pignater’s signature, and it is impressive! Quite simply, this is THE way to cook. It is straightforward, free from the affectations of starred cuisine, and displays genuine love for cooking and food. The ADLER Forest Sauna is literally a real sauna outdoors in the forest. In the early morning, it is only a few steps from my chalet to the sauna, which sits harmoniously among the trees. The special thing about it is that no trees have been cut down to accommodate the sauna

cabins, which are built around them and blend seamlessly into the environment. They are right in the middle of the scene rather than on one side, promoting a feeling of harmony and relaxation. It’s easy to lose track of time when looking at the Dolomites, and inevitably I ask myself whether the two-day break I had planned should not rather become a three-week holiday. Here it is again, the eagle working its magic... ADLER is the German word for an eagle, and some say this magnificent bird has magical powers. nya Hindmarch did a beautiful, shocking thing last February during London Fashion Week. Just weeks before the coronavirus hit, she closed all her London shops and filled them with 90,000 used plastic bottles. A powerful demonstration of how much the world population consumes in the blink of an eye – and a marketing coup that not only drew attention but helped her launch her innovative I Am A Plastic Bag collection of handbags. A passionate project that took two years of research and travel between Taiwan, Florence and London, where we met the British powerhouse.

Previous double page: Anya Hindmarch in her Bespoke store im London’s Belgravia neighborhood. Left: the new I Am A Plastic Bag collection. Every bag is fashioned out of 32 recycled half-liter plastic bottles.

www.gg-magazine.com

Ms. Hindmarch, Plastic pollution appears to be an ever-growing problem. Eight billion tons of used plastic enter our oceans every year. The New York Times just published an article stating that “plastic pollution isn’t just fouling the world’s oceans. It is also in the air we breathe, traveling on the wind and drifting down from the skies, according to a new study. More than 1,000 tons of tiny fragments rain down each year on national parks and wilderness areas in the American West alone, equivalent to between 123 million and 300 million plastic bottles’ worth.” Your new handbag collection offers a way to deal with single-use plastic – not by throwing it away, but by re-using it to create a new material. Anya Hindmarch: I learned a lot from our first project I’m Not A Plastic Bag for which we raised awareness about single-use plastic 13 years ago. People in Asia, Europe and the U.S. were queuing for our £5 bag. Partly as a result, consumption of plastic shopping bags in the U.K. fell from 10 billion to 6.1 billion. Soon afterwards, the country started banning plastic shopping bags and passed a law requiring businesses to charge for them. But here we are in 2020 and the problem is far from solved. Rather than adding to landfill, we asked ourselves: How can we re-use what is already on the planet? So we spent two years developing our new I Am A Plastic Bag collection. The technology is quite interesting: We take PET water bottles, crush them and clean them and melt them into pellets before spinning them into yarn. The reason it took us so long to develop the collection was that I wanted to create a truly beautiful, quality canvas. Something that looked natural and that people would love to touch. We worked with an amazing supplier, too. But what is totally unique is the coating that protects the outside of the bag. Here we used PVB, the film that is put between layers of glass in car windscreens to prevent them from shattering when smashed. We managed to extract the material and coat the bag with it.

39

How many plastic bottles are being used for making one of your bags? Each bag uses approximately 32 half-liter bottles, plus the re-used plastic from the windscreens of used cars. So it’s a really nice thing that every time you carry this bag you are actually saving plastic bottles from landfill. For me it was all about sending a signal about how to focus on the circular economy, showing how you can use this material to make something, wear it and then turn it into something else. How to make this circularity possible – how to use the things we have already instead of producing more. What were some of the challenges you faced? It’s been quite fascinating because I also learned a lot about leather. When we started this project, I thought we should use recycled leather for the piping, but interestingly, what they do to old scraps of leather is shred it into a kind of sand dust and then mix it – with plastic! (She laughs) That didn’t seem like the most sensible thing to do. We then looked at vegan leather, but that’s also plastic! So we circled back to leather that is handled as responsibly as possible: minimal water usage, local hides, no deforestation from Gold-rated Leather Working Group tanneries. That’s where it comes back to common sense. After all, leather is a by-product of the meat industry. After talking to many experts, we came to the conclusion that this route was the most sensible one until there are true alternatives. What did you learn during that two-year time period? To me it’s very important not to criticize what’s not yet perfect, but to praise the steps that have been made. Many people are too scared to even get started. But if everyone just does five or ten percent, it’s amazing how much you can rethink. Because of our project we also started looking at how we were dispatching our orders. We

used to send them in beautiful bags and boxes with all kinds of paper – crazy! So now we just have a beautiful card that says: Please go online. Everything you need to know you will find there. And we now work with recycled wrapping paper. We’re not perfect, but we’ve made a massive difference. So here is my advice: Whatever you can do today, don’t hold off. Just get started. Where do you produce the recycled canvas from the plastic bottles that are made into yarn?  The fabric is produced at a mill in Taiwan. It’s far away from my bags, which are normally all made in Florence, but it’s the only place that

“The fabric is c urrently produced in Taiwan, but I’m h oping to be able to make it in Europe soon.” ANYA HINDMARCH

can do this. And interestingly, Taiwan used to be called “Garbage Island” in the eighties because they had such an issue with waste. Today, they are the number three or four in the world when it comes to recycling. But I am hoping to be able to go more local quite soon and make this fabric either in Italy or Spain. One thing we are really doing is saving a lot of bottles with this bag!

With her I’m Not A Plastic Bag collection in 2007, Anya Hindmarch was already calling attention to the problem of plastic waste.

www.gg-magazine.com

You seem to have become one of the pioneers in the fashion industry. How did people react when you closed your London stores for Fashion Week and filled them with 90,000 used plastic bottles – the equivalent of six seconds of the world’s single-use plastic consumption?  I sit on the board of the British Fashion Council and we talk a lot about what Fashion Week is and how it must change and reflect what is going on in the world. We as a company felt we needed to communicate this project, which was a huge project in itself. It was so hard! Every person in our company of about 150 had to collect plastic bottles. Then we needed to peel off all the labels and clean the bottles. Overnight we closed three of the four stores we run in London and stored the 90,000 bottles between them. It was kind of shocking to see. P eople were just stopping, taking pictures. But it really did drive the point home. It was a very weird feeling for me to be sitting at home during Fashion Week with all my stores closed, but the reaction was phenomenal! We launched the stores, but only sold the I Am A Plastic Bag collection online and on Net-a-porter. The bags sold out in a day! I was nervous beforehand – because I put my head above the pack. This was a bag that was selling for £600 whereas the last one sold for £5. But it is a

43

beautiful, beautiful bag – all finished by hand. It is a feat of modern craftsmanship. You simply can’t do lovely things cheaply. When the fabrics from Taiwan arrived at the factory in Italy, every fabric roll was behaving slightly differently because it was produced from different bottles. There was a lot of engineering and craftsmanship involved in the process. I wanted to be really upfront about everything, so we put a video on our website explaining all the steps. I wanted to say: This is what we’ve done. I’m no expert, but this is what I researched. I’m not an eco-warrior – I’m just trying to use common sense. Your projects and bags seem to speak to celebrities immediately. Keira Knightley became a fan of your I’m Not A Plastic Bag project back in 2007. Reese Witherspoon was one of the first to post very actively when your new bag came out ... She is so sweet! I love Reese. This is one of her real topics. And she’s a smart woman with a lot of depth. She also has the influence to encourage people to spend their money on beautiful things. I think people want to be given a chance to make a difference, but without having to make too much of a sacrifice. And there certainly are ways to give people alternatives that aren’t too boring or ugly or difficult. I think we are all really worried about the planet. We all think that this is a climate emergency for sure. And I think people care. (Editor’s note: Anya Hindmarch used the pandemic to launch another thoughtful project for which she created more than 1.500 specially designed Holster bags to the British NHS Trust so that medical staff could easily access and carry their belongings while working during the coronavirus outbreak.) I personally loved the Sticker collection you launched a few years ago – and became aware of your brand because of its humorous approach. There always seems to be an element of not taking life or yourself too seriously. I think I don’t take myself too seriously because I am aware that fashion doesn’t save lives but is an important employer. Fashion certainly influences how we feel, affects our confidence and how we behave. But I have always thought that it should put a smile on your face. Personally, I can’t take fashion too seriously. But It’s also about having a bit of luxury, which is quite important to me too. As a teenager, what did you want to do with your life professionally? I wanted to be an opera singer! I used to sing a lot in school. But I come from a very entrepreneurial family. My older sister and my younger brother both have their own businesses and my father started his when he was very young, eventually turning it into a really big busi-

ness that had to do with plastics. Yes, he was a plastics engineer! It’s hilarious if you think about it. I grew up around plastic factories. My father invented the plastic flower pot. They used to be made out of clay. We have lots of very funny debates because he says – and I do agree with him – that in many ways plastic is actually quite a brilliant material. The problem is how people use plastic. The man who invented the plastic shopping bag, his son recently said: My father would be turning in his grave because he developed it to stop so many trees from being cut down in order to make paper bags. He carried a single plastic bag in his pocket all his life. Plastic, interestingly, has a pretty light footprint. If you talk to a lot of people, they’ll say you should wash and re-use your plastic water bottle. I have my juice bottle – I bring in my green juice every morning – and I wash it and take it back with me to the office the next day. I’ve probably been using the same bottle for four years. You wanted to become an opera singer but ended up as a handbag designer – can you explain how that happened?. Even as a young child, I loved making little wallets and containers out of paper. And having different places to store things. I love organization and I think handbags are all about organization. I myself am a super tidy person – in a really sad way. (She laughs) When I was a student I went to a lecture at school by a girl who was working in the fashion industry and she came to talk to my class. I remember that afterwards I went back to my desk and drew my first shop. I knew I wanted to have a shop and I wanted to sell leather goods. My mother gave me a handbag when I was 16, it was one of her old ones. I remember how it made me feel how much I loved the craftsmanship and the way it was made. So when I left school I didn’t go to university, I went to Florence because I wanted to spend time near the factories to understand the world of handmade leather goods. Later, I started out making bags there and selling them in England. I never had any official training but I learned very closely with the craftsmen. After that, we started our own production in England as well, opening our first shop, then more shops before finally going into wholesale. The business grew and grew in a natural way. What is your vision now – after taking over again as CEO and Creative Director. Where do you see yourself and the business in the next five to ten years?  Things are quite different now, actually. Having 55 stores around the world – all the same – no longer feels modern. I used to fly to Paris to see the person who makes my glasses and I could only buy them in Paris – which was

“Plastic is a brilliant material. The p roblem is how people use it.” ANYA HINDMARCH so much more exciting. Now I want to also be able to order online. So I think what we want is a much smaller retail footprint. The retail experience is something that you can’t do online, so it’s a reason to go. I also think we want a very strong digital distribution that’s direct to the customer, very first-person. Wholesale and department stores are having a pretty tough time because the digital world has made it difficult for them to have an edge. So we are working only with the best department stores, but in a way where we do something exclusively with them. Otherwise everyone starts offering discounts too early. It’s a very different model, but we’ve got some quite strong ideas. You were also always quite busy outside your business and have raised five children – how old are they today?  I married a widower – my husband’s wife died six months before I met him. It was a very sad story, actually. He had three children, aged one, three and four. And then we met and married and waited a while but then had two more. So we have five children. Today the oldest is 31 and the youngest is 17. Could you tell me how you managed all of that: building a company as a mother of five and maintaining what appears to be a wonderful marriage?  My husband and I work together. We feel very lucky, and we split many of the roles, which helps a good deal. But it’s a lot of organization and a lot of work. It’s good fun, though. He takes care of the business development, legal and finance aspect. All the sort of stuff I

44

don’t like doing. Sure, it can be hard at times. But it worked for us. We were expecting our first child when he joined the company 19 years ago! What else are you passionate about besides your company? How do you recharge your batteries?  I like to drink wine. (She laughs) Life is quite busy. My favorite thing is being at home at my kitchen table with friends, with a roasted chicken, very simple. I don’t love the red carpet treatment, none of that really matters. I like good friends and a nice bottle of wine, the simple life, a house full of kids. We enjoy nice holidays, spending time with the kids and seeing the world. That’s one thing I find very hard to give up in these times of environmental consciousness because I find travel so important for education. When you look back to 33 years ago when you founded your company and compare your typical customer then to your customer today – has she changed?  I guess we are right back where we started. Then and now, we’re looking at women from 25-50, people who aren’t so crazy about showing off their money and the initials of brands. They’re interested in something that lasts, fulfills a purpose, stands for a certain point of view. My belief is that your accessories should make your life easier and more efficient. And today, if you own something by Anya Hindmarch you’re also making a statement!  I always, always cared. That has always been and will always be very important to me.

Oat to Joy

Shrewd marketing and a convincing communication strategy have turned Oatly into a hugely popular lifestyle brand. All over the world, people are discovering the Swedish market leader’s sustainable oat-based products. It all began with founder Rickard Öste and a crazy idea in a lab more than 30 years ago. TEXT: Julia Dettmer  PHOTOS: Lars Jansson / Oatly

46

Toni Petersson became CEO of O atly in 2012, where he’s referred to as an ”oat punk.“

The brilliant idea came to Rickard Ă–ste when he met a grains trader: oats!

he year is 1989. A small team of scientists at Lund University in Sweden is grappling with a dilemma: how to produce a plant-based milk from oats. Rickard Öste, now 72, was the professor leading the experiments at the Institute for Applied Nutritional Science.

In 2014, CEO Petersson struck up "Wow, no cow" in the middle of an oat field. The publicity helped Oatly acquire cult status.

www.gg-magazine.com

In fact, he had been concerning himself with the subject for the past 25 years. After all, when he was a student himself in 1963, his own professor Arne Dahlqvist discovered lactose intolerance, a condition in which the body is unable to digest cow’s milk. So Öste was eager to find a solution for something that was plaguing people around the world. The idea to use oats to create an alternative to cow’s milk suddenly came to him during a meeting with a grains trader: “That’s when I realized the potential of oats with regard to both taste and nutrition. In addition, the grain was very well suited to our rainy, cold Swedish climate,” the researcher says, describing his eureka moment in an interview with GG. So Öste put together a small group of scientists from various disciplines to develop a plant milk made from oats. It took several years of research and experimentation to ensure that the oats retained their nutritional value when the enzymes were added. Öste even traveled to Japan to learn how soy milk was produced, but he decided to stick with oats, going on to celebrate his finest moment in 1993. That’s when he came up with a recipe for a good-tasting oat milk prototype. As reward for his work, he was granted a patent in 1994, which laid the foundation for Oatly’s future. Today, some 30 years later, Öste’s vision is an integral part of many people’s lives. Almost every café or coffee shop offers oat milk as an alternative to cow’s milk and people are increasingly choosing a non-dairy alternative because they no longer want to consume animal products as much or at all. They are passionately living the dream that Öste had worked so hard to make reality by developing a nutritious beverage for people with lactose intolerance and creating an alternative for those not wishing to drink cow’s milk. And in the process, Öste achieved the even greater goal of smoothing the road toward more sustainable consumption of our planet’s resources. But every success story has its stumbling blocks and Öste’s path had its share. When he

49

and his team tried to sell their patented innovation to other food producers, none showed much interest. So in the mid-nineties, under the label Mill Milk, Öste himself launched his new product in Sweden and the U.K. It was a huge success. Oatly was founded in 2001 and the first production facility opened in 2006. The eco-friendly company is now a popular lifestyle brand. The man largely responsible for this successful positioning was Toni Petersson, who took over as CEO of Oatly in 2012. A now legendary promotional video from 2014 features the businessman in a casual T-shirt with gelled-back hair, standing at a keyboard in the middle of an oat field and accompanying himself singing “Wow, wow, no cow, no, no, no,” – a song he wrote himself. The video naturally featured the unmistakable Oatly milk carton as well. The stunt was self-deprecating, authentic and evidently very appealing. It received 2.5 million views on YouTube and countless comments from people asking for the “full version of the song,” a clear indication of how well the company was communicating its new image. Simple, catchy slogans such as “It’s like milk but made for humans” helped make Oatly a highly desirable love brand. Another setback came in 2015. The Swedish dairy industry objected to the already famous claim that oat milk was like cow’s milk but made for humans (unlike cow’s milk), and took Oatly to court. The small company was no match for its powerful adversary but viewed its defeat as confirmation that it had done the right thing by questioning established norms connected with the consumption of cow’s milk. And by openly communicating its position on its website, Oatly won the hearts and minds of consumers – a smart move that translated into a sales increase of 45 percent. Today, the company no longer considers itself a combatant in a “milk war” but rather as a crucial player in a larger movement to create a more sustainable future. What began as a stumbling block become a milestone, and several more would follow. Helge Weitz of Oatly Germany, one of two general managers, says: “A further milestone was the introduction of our barista edition, something not yet available among non-dairy milk alternatives. Its perfect frothing capabilities, great taste and the fact that it didn’t curdle in coffee helped it establish itself in the excellent environment of top quality cafés.” The ensuing hype was so great that the company encountered supply bottlenecks a year after entering the U.S. market in 2018. The third milestone was Oatly’s launch in German supermarkets, although

50

John Schoolcraft, the man behind the unique and daring marketing campaigns, has been creative director of Oatly for the past eight years.

according to Weitz, this was anything but a walkover: “There were just two of us when we started out in late 2017, and we had to deal with many reservations from our trade partners. They refused to believe that Oatly would ever be anything but a niche product. They also told us that our communication was too Englishfocused, the packaging had too much writing on it and that German consumers were different and needed to be targeted in a different way.” So it took a while to convince buy-

Oatly’s advertising slogans are quirky, direct and sometimes sheer nonsense. The packaging, itself a main communication channel, is often entirely covered with messages and information.

www.gg-magazine.com

ers to add Oatly to their range, but today, the brand can be found in almost every German supermarket. The brand’s sustainable lifestyle image naturally helps to amplify its luster. Influencers with broad social media reach like Ella Mills, the food writer and entrepreneur behind Deliciously Ella (1.7 million followers on Instagram) or Madeleine Alizadeh, the activist, podcaster and author behind Dariadaria (more than 290,000 followers on Instagram) use their channels to feature delicious plant-based foods and explain that it’s not all that difficult at all to find alternatives to animal products. Looking around in the supermarket, you’ll notice that the Oatly products are not relegated to the natural foods, organic or special diet section. Instead, they’re on the shelf right beside the cow’s milk. And the selection of products is considerable: In addition to regular oat milk there’s the previously mentioned barista edition, a number of low-fat versions, an organic oat milk and one fortified with calcium. The product design is uniform, consisting of natural shades of beige and brown with touches of blue, white and black as well as plenty of written text. The packaging underscores the brand’s laidback but authentic image and scores points for recognition value. A quarter of a million followers on Instagram regularly “like” the company’s nonsensical postings like the one where a young man sets up an inline skating course marked by empty Oatly cartons only to trip over them awkwardly in the end. But Oatly’s social media strategy isn’t just based on naive humor; rather, the company consistently communicates its sustainable values. Producing a liter of oat milk, for instance, releases less than a third of the carbon dioxide that producing a liter of cow’s milk does.

53

At Oatly headquarters in Sweden, we glance at some figures and are duly impressed: The company achieved sales of 1 billion SEK (roughly 95 million euros) in 2018 and almost double that in 2019. Oatly is still quite small compared to most dairy milk producers in Europe but the company is growing fast. With a market share of nearly 40 percent, it’s the market leader among oat milk producers in Germany. And what started out as a twoman show almost three years ago is now a company with 30 employees. Worldwide, Oatly employs more than 500 people. But the company has no intention of resting on its laurels. “We can make anything out of oats that can be made from milk, and our products range from beverages to ice cream to cream cheese alternatives,” says Tobias Goj, Oatly Germany’s other general manager. And although he isn’t permitted to say exactly what the company has in the pipeline, he intimates that the inventive Swedes still have quite a few surprises up their sleeve. All of Oatly’s new products are painstakingly researched and developed in Öste’s lab, just as they were 30 years ago. This degree of investment in a scientific approach is one of the reasons why it’s impossible to get a liter of oat milk for the same price as a liter of cow’s milk. Added to that, Oatly is competing in a market that is determined by dumping prices. If you consider what it costs to produce cow’s milk and then throw the term “animal welfare” into the equation, what you get is nothing short of a scandal, says Goj. There’s something else that needs taking into consideration, in Germany, at least: “Our oat milk is classified as a beverage as opposed to a foodstuff, which means that the value-added tax rate on our products is 19 percent rather than 7 percent, the rate applying to milk.” Meanwhile, consumption of cow’s milk in Germany has decreased. According to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, 2.5 percent less milk was produced in 2019 compared with the previous year. Per capita consumption has also dropped by 3.6 percent. And as people are drinking less cow’s milk, they are drinking more plant-based alternatives, with consumption rising rapidly to more than 30 percent over the course of a year, and the trend is upwards. In other words, the needle of the food compass is quite clearly pointing toward plant-based milk alternatives. Oat milk fans can check out the interactive map on oatfinder.oatly.com to find the stores, coffee shops and cafés selling oat milk products close to where they live. In Europe and the U.S., the map is already covered with black dots. So you don’t have to be clairvoyant to predict that before very long, the rest of the world is sure to follow.

Sir David Attenborough has seen the disastrous course our planet is taking with his very own eyes.

n the late 1980s, a meeting was convened at the BBC studios on Whiteladies Road in Bristol, England. Its participants discussed the imminent retirement of a gray-haired freelancer who had been working with the BBC for almost four d ecades. “We need to think about who is going to take over from D avid when this series is finished,” a junior p roducer, Mike Gunton, remembered his boss saying.

Sir David Attenborough was nearing 65 and putting the finishing touches to “The Trials of Life,” the third of his epic series about the natural world. These programs had been broadcast around the globe. They had established a new genre, perhaps even a new language of wildlife films. It was a fine legacy. Now it was time to go. When Alastair Fothergill became head of the BBC Natural History Unit a few years later, executives were still worrying over the same question. The BBC director-general asked him to find a new David Attenborough. “I remember thinking, that’s not very sensible,” said Fothergill. “He has always been this great oak tree under which it’s been hard for a sapling to grow.” Today, Mike Gunton has ascended the ranks to become creative director of the Natural History Unit. He still attends meetings on Whiteladies Road. But, three decades after the subject was first broached, finding the next David Attenborough is no longer on the agenda. “We still haven’t got an answer and I don’t want one,” Gunton told me. Attenborough was born on May 8, 1926, 17 days after the Queen. And, like the Queen, he has become a symbol of stability in a turbulent world. It is hard to imagine a time before he was on our screens, affably engaging with sloths or giant turtles – partly because there wasn’t. Television was invented the year after he was born, and only began to enter people’s homes in the 1950s, when he was beginning his career. The first program he made was watched by barely 10,000 people gazing at 405 flickering black-and-white lines on large boxes in living rooms in the southeast of England. In spring of 2019, his series “Our Planet” became Netflix’s most-watched original documentary, watched by 33 million people in its first month. Attenborough and the Queen are more than just contemporaries. “I see them quite a lot,” Attenborough said of the royal family when I met him at his home in Richmond. He first encountered the Queen’s children, Charles and

59

Anne, in 1958, when they toured the BBC’s Lime Grove studios and the young presenter introduced them to his pet cockatoo, Cocky. In 1986, the year after Attenborough was knighted, he produced the first of six Christmas broadcasts for the Queen. Last year, he was interviewed by Prince William on stage at Davos; the future king asked him for advice on how best to save the planet. In our fractured age, Attenborough is the closest we have to a universally beloved public figure. Last year, a YouGov poll found him to be the most popular person in Britain. But Attenborough transcended national treasure status some years ago. He is a truly global figure now. So many Chinese viewers downloaded “Blue Planet II” that it temporarily slowed down the country’s internet, according to the Sunday Times. As he moves from the White House to the World Economic Forum, urging presidents, businesspeople and the public to better protect the environment, he has come to be viewed, in a way he sees as overblown, as a keeper of humanity’s conscience. “There will never be another David Attenborough. What makes him special, apart from all his personal qualities, is the timing of his life,” said Fothergill. When Attenborough began traveling the world in the 1950s, Fothergill noted, we were in a different geological epoch, the Holocene. Today, we live in the Anthropocene, an epoch defined by Homo sapiens’ disruptive dominance of the planet. “He’s seen more of the natural world than any human being that has ever lived on the planet and he’s also seen more change than anyone else. And he feels a responsibility.” Despite the adulation, one charge has dogged Attenborough for decades. Critics argue that he has built himself a unique storytelling platform, only to fail to tell the most important story of all: the destructive impact of people on the planet. But one reason Attenborough has thrived on screen for seven decades is because he has always sensed how attitudes are changing, and moved with the times. For a long time, he maintained that his programs must showcase the wonders of the natural world, and not speak of the human one. Now his newest series are filled with urgent messages about environmental destruction. Still, he resists the idea that he has changed; he prefers to say that it is the public mood that has transformed. After a lifetime of caution, almost despite himself, he has become a leading champion for action. Attenborough fell in love with the natural world as a boy, exploring his way through his neighborhood in Leicester, looking for bugs, insects and amphibians. The middle child of three brothers, he grew up in a family of

teachers. His father was principal of University College, Leicester. His mother was a talented pianist. Attenborough’s storytelling has been honed over seven decades in television – and he is, above all, a TV man. After studying natural sciences at Cambridge, he married his university sweetheart, Jane Oriel, and ditched his boring junior publishing job for the glamorous new world of television. In 1954, Attenborough traveled to Sierra Leone with Jack Lester, London Zoo’s curator of reptiles, to film a new series, “Zoo Quest.” The concept was simple: they would catch wild animals – their bounty from Sierra Leone included pythons, bird-eating spiders and their big prize, the bald-headed rockfowl – and bring them back to London to add to the zoo’s collection. At the outset, Attenborough was the producer, director, sound man and animal wrangler. He only ended up being the presenter because Lester was taken ill after the first episode. Over the next few years, new series of “Zoo Quest” appeared and Attenborough’s reputation grew In 1965, he became controller of BBC Two, an appointment greeted with skepticism by “TV professionals” quoted in newspaper columns of the day. At first, he was considered lightweight, a youthful bit of eye-candy, but he was soon hailed for his “unexpected” success, as a Daily Express profile put it. As the channel’s controller and then director of programs for both BBC channels, Attenborough was a great innovator. Programs that emerged under his watch include “Dad’s Army,” “Porridge” and “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.” In 1972, he championed “community programming” that included what has been described as the first sympathetic portrayal of transgender people on British television. Attenborough’s achievements at BBC Two made him a prime candidate for director-general, the top job at the corporation. But he was tiring of the senior executive’s life and in the early ’70s he resigned. He persuaded the BBC that he could create a “Civilisation”-style treatment of the evolution of plants and animals. This series took three years to make. “Life on Earth” was broadcast for 55 minutes on 13 consecutive Sunday evenings in 1979. Despite the presence of a safari-suited Attenborough, binoculars around his neck, skipping between exotic locations, the early episodes often feel like a lecture with moving pictures. But as its epic story slowly unfolds, the series warms up. The writing is often superb: “Four million animals and plants in the world,” says Attenborough, “four million different solutions to staying alive.” The penultimate episode, on primates, features the first memorable Attenborough “two shot,” where he appears alongside another animal. He joins a grooming session

“There is more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla than any other animal I know.” SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH among mountain gorillas in Rwanda, and still has the presence of mind to whisper: “There is more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla than any other animal I know.” Although some facts have changed – we now know there are more than 8 million species, not 4 million – the series stands the test of time. For old-timers at the BBC, history is divided into before and after “Life on Earth.” The series established what television executives call the “blue-chip” natural history blockbuster. While the BBC has relinquished its dominance over most genres, it remains the pre-eminent maker of natural history programs, according to Fothergill. So much of that “is down to David,” he said. Much imitated, these blockbusters are still a huge global export: The BBC will not reveal what profit, if any, these series make, but “Planet Earth II” and “Blue Planet II” were sold to more than 235 territories. After the success of “Life on Earth,” Attenborough spent much of the ’80s completing what became a triumvirate of blue-chip behemoths, with “The Living Planet” exploring ecology and “The Trials of Life” revealing animal behavior. He also turned his attention to series about less fashionable subjects: plants, spiders, stick insects and other invertebrates. Audiences liked his enthusiasm, his quick wit and his affection for animals. By the early ’80s, Attenborough’s programs had been broadcast around the world and he became recognized wherever he went. But he was not yet, to use another label that vexes him, a global superstar. Until recently, when Attenborough’s series were shown on U.S. television, broadcasters would replace his

63

narration with voices they thought an American audience would prefer. In 2010, when “Life” was broadcast in the U.S., Oprah Winfrey was the narrator. Attenborough’s scripts are written by production teams, but he is an unusually rigorous editor and rewriter. Even today, Attenborough rewrites each script to fit his own turn of phrase and checks for accuracy. When filming, according to Mike Gunton, Attenborough does not learn his lines precisely. “He looks at it and comes back and says: ‘What do you think if I say it like this?’ His turn of phrase and the way he delivers these turns of phrase – it’s got such power. He has the same genes as his brother,” meaning Richard, the Oscar-winning actor-director, who died in 2014. “I’ve often said he’s as good a performer as his brother,” Gunton said. By his own admission, it took some time for Attenborough to realize just what a threat humankind posed to the environment. When he was younger, he said, people knew of species that had gone or almost gone extinct, such as the Arabian oryx and the dodo, but “you didn’t perceive it as a major ecological problem. And in point of fact, let’s be honest, if the Hawaiian goose disappears, the world doesn’t actually judder in its revolutions.” It wasn’t until “Life on Earth” that he came to see that species decline was systemic and “actually the disappearance of the giant panda represented some major change.” For most of his life, Attenborough’s environmentalism has been the old-fashioned, offscreen variety, lending his support to numerous green charities. B

awah is a tiny group of islands in the South China Sea, a name that makes even seasoned luxury travelers go starry-eyed. In Indonesian, ”bawah“ means ”far below,“ a g eographical reference to Bawah’s location at the southernmost point of the Anambas Archipelago of around 300 islands between Borneo and Malaysia. From the air, Bawah Reserve is already bursting with promise. The pilot of our small seaplane circles the main island, which has five smaller ones surrounding it, and I admire the view – the beauty of the dense jungle, the white secluded beaches and the sparkling water all around. The aircraft touches down onto the smooth surface of the lagoon and heads toward one of the terminals on the split wooden jetty that looks for all the world like a mermaid’s tail from above. Twelve years ago, while on a sailing trip, British businessman Tim Hartnoll discovered and

instantly fell in love with the tiny, uninhabited island paradise beneath a centuries-old tropical forest. The 64-year-old shipping magnate who lived with his wife and three grown children in Singapore had made a lot of money in the shipping industry and was able to purchase the 300-hectare main island as well as the five small neighboring ones. What makes Bawah so unique apart from its secluded location and untouched natural surroundings is the giant lagoon, thanks to which this magical place is accessible by seaplane even though it’s so remote. But it took six years to transform this enchanting island into a luxury eco-resort because Bawah is situated in a nature reserve, where the use of heavy machinery is forbidden. Hartnoll engaged Singapore architect and designer Sim Boon Yang, a specialist for ecological projects, to gently integrate 35 villas into the tropical landscape. I’m staying at one of the 19 beach suites, where prices start at € 1,855 per night, depending on the season. The overwater bungalows perched on stilts with their stunning views of the lagoon are even more exclusive: Prices start at €2,250 per night. A sandy path, freshly raked, leads from the reception area into the jungle. Every few

meters I see a lovingly painted wooden sign suspended from the branches. Each one bears the name of a current guest and points the way to their villa. I wonder for a moment whether this practice conforms with data protection regulations back in the EU, but am instantly charmed the moment I catch sight of the IRINA sign, which I follow to my own beach suite – an open, light-filled bamboo structure with a high, white tent roof and bamboo-straw blinds serving as side walls. I walk up a couple of bamboo steps to reach the veranda, which is just meters from the sea. Behind me in the 70-square-meter space is the bedroom and behind it, a beautiful bath.

Wagon-wheel-sized stony corals in pastel colors and deep blue starfish – right on my doorstep.

GETTING THERE Due to the pandemic, the resort closed in March but is scheduled to reopen soon. Guests usually fly to Singapore, where an overnight stay, for instance at the Mandarin Oriental, starts at € 230 per night (www.mandarinoriental.com). The following morning, you are driven to the harbor and met by a member of staff from the Bawah Reserve with ferry tickets in hand. The crossing to Batam, an island belonging to Indonesia, takes 45 minutes. From there, you proceed to the nearby airport and board a Twin Otter that gets you to Bawah in about an hour. German tour operator Trauminsel Reisen offers an all-inclusive 5-night package in a Beach Suite with transfers from and to Singapore Airport and to and from Bawah starting at € 3,710. For reservations, visit www.trauminselreisen.de or call +49 815 29 31 90.

The tub and sinks have been handcrafted from recycled Indonesian copper and feature clean, elegant lines. At Bawah, great care is taken to protect the environment, but in an unobtrusive way. Hot water comes courtesy of well-concealed solar panels and both rain and seawater are treated to produce drinking water, which is filled into bottles. I’ve traveled light. No more than 15 kilos are allowed on the last stage of the journey by seaplane, so I’ve only brought with me a few summer dresses and bikinis, a pair of sneakers, sandals and my yoga things. A morning yoga session on the beach is included in the price, as are daily spa treatments, a beach picnic on secluded Coconut Beach and all water sports and activities with the exception of diving. There’s a straw hat for me to use hanging on the coat rack and I spot a specially developed coral-friendly sunscreen in the bathroom alongside other care products. In true earth-friendly fashion, all of them are provided in reusable ceramic containers. Someone has dropped off some snorkeling equipment on the veranda for me, and I decide to try it out immediately. I am richly rewarded by the sight of wagon-wheel-sized stony corals in pastel colors and deep blue starfish right here in the lagoon on my doorstep. A delicious meal made from local ingredients is served in the evening. I climb some stone steps that have been cut into the cliff near the mermaid jetty to reach the elegant Tree Tops restaurant which, incidentally, was also designed by Sim Boon Yang. The woven reed roof, which looks like an upside down birds’ nest, is supported by an airy bamboo structure that is open on three sides. At dusk, the view

71

of the lagoon is absolutely stunning. There are about two dozen other guests of all different ages at Bawah. Traveling by themselves or as couples, they come from all over the world, including Germany, England, Italy, Asia and the U.S. Here on the island, the dress code is relaxed. When night falls, the jungle awakens and from the wilderness beyond my suite, I’m serenaded later in the evening with a breathtaking concert. Luckily, I neither see, hear nor feel any mosquitoes. Teguh Wahyu Pramana, Bawah’s chief gardener, shows me his ingenious system for controlling them that doesn’t use any chemicals at all. He fills several containers with water to encourage the mosquitoes to breed, but before the larvae have a chance to hatch, he flushes the water away. Captain Green, as Teguh is known on Bawah, is very proud of his huge garden, where he grows just about all the fruits and vegetables you can imagine, including eggplant, bananas, chili peppers and herbs. The list goes on. I can tell how fond Captain Green is of his garden, but he loves the island very much too and wholly supports Tim Hartnoll’s sustainable hotel concept. During my stay on Bawah, I’m struck time and again by how passionate the staff are about their place of work. Sakti Nasukha is no exception. He and I have arranged to meet for a walk through the jungle. The 29-year-old was one of the first Bawah employees and tells me enthusiastically about the unique plants and animals that live here. He leads me along a steep and narrow path through the dense greenery until we reach the highest point of the island, where we stop for a breather near a magnificent Dipterocarpus grandiflorus – an endangered hardwood tree that stands over 40 meters tall. Sakti tells me proudly that the tree is probably around 270 years old. A family of hill mynas living in the crown of the tree draws our attention with their loud, piercing cries. We encounter other tropical birds as well, including yellow bittern, mangrove blue flycatchers and gray-capped emerald doves. Sakti shows me some fish bones lying on the ground – clear evidence of an osprey’s meal. After walking for about half an hour we slip through a narrow opening in a magnificent blooming pink orchid bush to emerge on a stony plateau some 50 meters above the sea. Behind me lies the jungle and before me, like a giant bathtub, the sparkling, incredibly beautiful turquoise waters of the lagoon. Beyond that, there’s nothing at all. No airplane, no ship, just myriad shades of blue stretching as far as the horizon. I feel a small pang of regret at the thought of having to leave this wonderful place and return to civilization the next day.

Kuma-san, almost 30 years ago you built a car showroom in Tokyo that you evidently got a lot of fun out of. You referenced Russian constructivism, constructed medieval walls and crowned the whole thing with a huge Ionic column. Today you use materials such as rice paper and bamboo, glass and plastic – and built a stadium for the 2021 Olympic Games out of wood. What happened in between?  Hmm. We’re 30 years older. And possibly also a little wiser.

Can you be more specific?  When I started out in architecture back in the 1980s, the one thing I wanted to do more than anything else was criticize the prevailing modernism. In my eyes, it had fizzled out. That’s why I committed to a kind of postmodernism – that’s what all that staged chaos with a Greek column in the middle of it stood for. But the idea soon lost its appeal. What happened?  In the long run, postmodernism was too academic for people. You can’t keep telling the same joke over and over for years on end. The 1990s were difficult for me after that. I was hardly getting any work in Tokyo, so I had to leave the city and look for smaller projects. That was a turning point in the way I see myself as an architect. Do people build differently in the provinces than in the cities?  Oh yes! At least they did in Japan at the time. In Tokyo, I’d always worked with big construction companies. Large-scale projects – everything was organized, everyone had their own area. I dealt with the managers. I had virtually nothing to do with the tradesmen or craftspeople. And in the country?  I was responsible in a totally different way. I talked to the craftspeople, watched them work – and learned a great deal. What exactly? Techniques? Or was it more like

www.gg-magazine.com

an outlook on life, a way of seeing the world that you learned?  Both, actually. But more than anything else, I learned to recognize and appreciate the value of craftsmanship, the care that goes into the details, the cleverness of the solutions. They were really good, intense conversations. We’ve got fantastic craftspeople in Japan, you know, and they’ve got thousands of years of tradition behind them. And then you returned to the city.  That’s right. My talks with craftspeople had taught me about far more than just their techniques. I’d become aware of values like sustainability, modesty – and a special kind of economy. You could call it thriftiness, I suppose. Or even humility. You studied in New York, run a second office in Paris and have developed residential concepts for Moscow and a civic center for Sydney. You build in Beijing and Lausanne, in Arnhem and São Paulo, Aix-en-Provence and Vancouver. In other words, all over the world. Two years ago, the building you designed for the Dundee branch of London’s V&A Museum opened its doors in Scotland – and yet you still describe yourself as perhaps the most Japanese architect of our times. How do the two things go together?  I think there’s a system of values evolving in Europe and the U.S. that the traditional Japanese lifestyle is very compatible with. It’s simple, shows consideration for other people and is more mindful of making sustainable decisions. I think it could be a model for the 21st century. In one of your ref lections on architecture, you write that needs have already changed: People don’t want monumental buildings anymore, nothing that sets itself apart from the rest of the neighborhood.  Yes, I believe our sense of aesthetics has changed. People here in Japan have developed a different mentality, especially since the earthquake that took place in 2011. They look for happiness in different places, and I believe they’re looking for a different kind of

77

happiness too. There’s something you could call a new spirituality. Japan is reflecting on its own tradition. The catastrophe fundamentally changed people here. You’re particularly referring to the devastating consequences for the Fukushima power plant?  The country came to its senses, so to speak. Before that happened, I used to try and create something along the lines of islands with my projects, islands of simplicity or calm – but the misfortunes of 2011 afflicted the entire country. From the outside, that’s hard to tell. We’re still seeing what seems like a very lavish and carefree approach to energy in Japan. Even the nuclear reactors have been brought back online. So what has actually changed?  Prime Minister Shinzo Abe might not be able to redefine our entire energy policy. But I think most politicians are saying that fundamental changes are needed. What did the tsunami and the Fukushima catastrophe mean for architecture? You yourself once said that one of the major effects of the earthquake was that it destroyed architecture inspired by Western, American models.  I think you can sum up the big transformation after the catastrophe very simply: Find new ways! Your own ways! After World War II, Japan fought to catch up with the West. It was a compulsion that seized the entire country. We’d been defeated, so we tried to emulate the Americans culturally and economically. Turning towards nuclear energy was just one aspect of that – we more or less adopted the entire system. And the earthquake was something like a sign from heaven ...  It was a very clear warning signal. But Japan has always been subject to the forces of nature. And people have learned to adapt to that.  That’s true. Our respect for the powers of nature in earlier times is apparent from the

fact that Japanese houses used to be built at a safe distance to the sea. Preferably a bit higher up the hill, where a tsunami couldn’t sweep them away. That might not have been true of Tokyo because we’re protected by the bay here. But it was very definitely the case further north. People knew that a huge wave rolled across the land every 60 or 80 years and swept away everything in its path. So they tended to keep their distance from the water. That was clever. Unfortunately, we ignored those lessons in the 20th century. It was tempting to live by the water, so we built our houses there – along with shopping malls, industrial plants and even nuclear power stations. Today we know what a momentous mistake that was!

“The idea is to overcome an architecture of sculptural objects.” KENGO KUMA What do the most recent catastrophes mean for your own work?  Before the tsunami I had a vague feeling that we ought to develop a post-American, postmodern system. It was just intuition, a slight sense of unease with the way things were going. But now I’m utterly convinced: That’s the direction we ought to be heading in. In terms of architecture?  I’ve turned my attention to wood as a material a lot more purposefully than in the past. And not just because of my own convictions – at my clients’ urging too. Their whole mentality had changed – and that changed their understanding of aesthetics as well. Flick through some Japanese architecture magazines: In the past you’d have seen virtually nothing but gray concrete, but nowadays you’re increasingly likely to come across the mellow, warm hues of wood.

THE EXCHANGE  A success all round: The multipurpose civic center by Kengo Kuma soon became a new landmark in Sydney, Australia. An eye-catcher between skyscrapers.

And what does that tell us?  People crave natural materials. Personally, I’ve always felt attracted to wood: The colors, the light, the craftsmanship and the smell have always reminded me of my childhood. But now there are a lot of architects who think the same way. People simply want to live with wood again. It’s a very contemporary, future-proof material for building houses. Few construction materials are as sustainable as wood. It’s fragrant, creates a pleasant indoor climate and corresponds to the human

scale. Thanks to modern technology, not even flammability is an issue any more. We ought to rediscover it. Nevertheless, it’s still concrete that sets the tone in the modern architecture of Japan. In your native Tokyo, the style of somebody like Tadao Ando is in evidence on every street corner: austere, smooth, polished surfaces in a very elegant gray.  That’s true, concrete was the 20th century’s means of expression, just think of brutalism. But today we’re finding better solutions. Take the Culture Tourist Information Center in Asakusa: We stacked the structures of the traditional wooden houses found in the neighborhood one on top of the other to create a tower – obviously that’s a statement. And then there’s the stadium for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Which you designed out of wood. And there are green plants growing out of the exterior walls. How did you get a concept like that accepted?  Well, there were two competitions. The first was won by London architect Zaha Hadid, who died in 2016. Tadao Ando was chairman of the jury, and I didn’t even take part in the competition because I knew that his and my views were very far apart How come there was a second competition?  The government, our Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, pulled the plug after the costs for the stadium had doubled. On top of that, a few very influential architects had called for protests against Zaha Hadid’s design – people like Fumihiko Maki and Toyo Ito. And almost 90,000 people signed the petition. In your opinion, what was Zaha Hadid’s mistake?  Maybe she didn’t judge the location correctly. She wanted to erect an outstanding building, a monument. That was her great, magnificent talent. She could design buildings that stood out from their surroundings. But in the case of the Olympic stadium, you’re dealing with a very sensitive place. The site is in Meiji Jingu Gaien Park with the famous picture gallery of Emperor Meiji – in a place like that, the architecture should show respect for its surroundings rather than trying to make itself the center of attention. You’ve provided theoretical justification for your position too. Even 10 years ago, you were writing essays in which you challenged your fellow architects and clients to change their way of thinking: “Anti-Object” – architecture that sees itself as a service. That’s a very modern approach. Has time proved you right? It looks that way. The idea is to overcome an Continued on page 252

Eco Dream on Ibiza

Tucked away in the green hills of San Miguel, north of the island’s capital Eivissa, this summer residence offers sustainable living and luxury comforts. With solar energy and drinking water from its own well. The panorama is out of this world. TEXT: Christina Libuda PHOTOS: Hristov Image 85

The patio along the west elevation provides shade during the day. The adjoining concrete kitchen countertop is extra-robust and allows for outdoor cooking. The home cinema on the lower ground floor is perfect for chilling out on rainy days.

biza’s hilly northern coast is regarded as one of the most coveted treasures of the Balearic island, with its romantic pine forests and tranquil villages like San Miguel. Life here comes to a standstill around midday. Far removed from the bustle of the tourist hotspots, the hippy spirit of the 1960s is alive and well here. Restaurants serve ecological farm-to-table cuisine, headstands are perfected between pines and palms in hidden yoga retreats, and local folk convene on the beach on Sundays to enjoy the sunset. The luxury of the simple way of life.

For twelve years now, Rolf Blakstad has been managing the family business Blakstad Design Consultants, which has made a name for itself with modern finca homes in a traditional style.

Surrounded by idyllic nature, six kilometres from San Miguel and four kilometres from San Mateo, lies this modern eco-residence. Hidden away behind unassuming gates leading off a quiet country road, the house with its white façade nestles amazingly well amid the blossoming scenery of the hillside plot, which spans some three hectares. That’s equivalent to about four football pitches; native farmland where palm, olive and fig trees now grow. The nearest neighbours are far enough away that they’re neither seen nor heard. The interiors and terraces of this eco-friendly summer residence, when combined, span almost 870 square metres. It was designed and built by the Ibizan architect Rolf Blakstad, in line with traditional Mediterranean architecture dating back to the 7th century. “To this day, there’s hardly a more efficient way to keep a house cool in summer and warm in the winter,” says Blakstad, whose company Blakstad Design Consultants is specialised in environmentally friendly construction. Locally produced bricks form the foundations behind the smooth, plastered white walls, while rustic wood sourced from the surrounding forests creates beautiful points of contrast in the form of ceilings and doors. The house is connected up to the island’s main grid, but most of the electricity is generated by solar energy. In winter, the generator helps out from time to time. Drinking water is supplied from the property’s on-site well, which is also used for the pool. Waste water is filtered and treated for the irrigation system. So, in a sense, this is a closed ecosystem. Vast panoramic windows and sliding doors

have been incorporated into the cooling walls of the property, forming connections between the airy, cuboid interiors and the various outdoor terraces, and inviting the sunlight to come flooding in. One’s view cannot help but sweep to the outside, where ancient trees and newly planted palms enclose the estate in soft hues of green. “The idea was to connect the interior and exterior here in ways that blur the boundaries,” says the Dutch businessman and current owner, Emile Kuenen. He had the property built in 2017 as a second home for his family. The light-flooded living room with a glass roof forms the heart of this residence. It is the space connecting the living area with the pool and the shady patio, which spans some 50 square metres and has a 450-year-old olive tree at its centre. Life is played out here under its branches on hot summer days. Anyone who lives on Ibiza, says Kuenen, is unlikely to be actively on the lookout for sunshine. “The house was designed so that you can walk around while always staying in the shade.” After taking a dip in the pool, he loves more than anything to simply throw himself into the plush sofa cushions and relax. Like everything in the house, these are very easy to clean. “We wanted to be able to walk into the bedroom with wet feet and not have a heart attack if the kids happen to be jumping around on the sofas or guests are dancing on the table,” says Kuenen with a smile. The casual, summer-infused interior design, which bears the signature of the South African designer Sumari Krige, is both practical and beautiful. Kuenen fell in love with her style while visiting Krige’s interior shop “La Grange” in Cape Town and promptly commissioned her to design his villa. Rustic accessories and robust fabrics adorned with African patterns lend an enthralling ethno look to the otherwise minimalist style of the house, extending down to the lower levels that comprise a home cinema and fitness room. It’s not just the cushion covers that make you feel immediately at home here though. “When I first came to the island in 2011, I was just captivated by the ‘Ibiza magic’, as they say here,” says Kuenen. The play of oranges and reds in the sky is truly majestic, and can be enjoyed here lying in bed in the mornings from all seven bedrooms, as well as the pool house. Then there’s the magic of the silence that lies over the property like a protective veil. Kuenen is sure of one thing: “As well as being eco-friendly, this villa is also soul-friendly. The stresses of everyday life fall away the very moment you cross the threshold to this home.”

KENGO KUMA

“In the 20th century, many architects had the goal of building isolated monuments.” KENGO KUMA In the case of the Olympic stadium, somebody seems to have convinced the government of its merits too. There was a new jury, then a second competition, which you won, and construction started in late 2016. You charmingly name a German as the role model for your very consciously Japanese attitude: the architect Bruno Taut. What role does he play for you?  His outside perspective confirmed what I experienced and felt during my childhood in Japan but hadn’t yet worked up into a concept. Taut came to Japan in 1933 and found our way of life very appealing. And it wasn’t the modernist buildings that delighted him – he felt pulled in the opposite direction. So he looked at our country’s traditional way of building and said to himself: That’s what’s going to follow modernism! He wrote his thoughts about things like the Katsura Imperial Villa in K yoto or the Ise Grand Shrine down. And I devoured it all. What did you learn from him?  First and foremost, the realization that our architectural tradition already contains the answers for a post-industrial era. Taut had been looking for models like that for a long time. He found them in Japan.

STARBUCKS   Kuma designed this four-story Starbucks building in the Nakameguro district of Tokyo with an unusual aesthetic. Wood dominates – inside and out.

So would you describe yourself as a traditionalist?  No, our architectural tradition inspired me, as did my own personal experiences. But what I design is very definitely contemporary architecture. Look at the Water Glass House, for instance, which I built in 1995: A very Japanese longing for nature is the starting point, but it formulates a very modern response. By the way: I was particularly delighted that I could build the house in Shizuoka,

252

in the immediate vicinity of Bruno Taut’s only building in Japan – the Hyuga Villa. Putting this need to be close to nature aside: The earth’s population is growing and growing – won’t we have to get used to the idea that in 20 or 30 years from now we’ll all be housed in huge “machines for living in”? Our way of life is changing rapidly too: People are moving around from one place to another as much as they’re moving from one relationship to another, they’re communicating via the internet – how is it even remotely possible for architecture to keep up?  There’s a great deal architects can do to encourage a new lifestyle. I’m working on concepts for shared residential or office space, for instance. Which brings me to the prefab house you designed for Muji: practical, quick to erect and quick to recycle when the time comes?  Well, yes – although I’ve come to realize that even the Muji house is a typical detached home for the suburbs. It’s intended as a suggestion, but it leaves a lot of problems unresolved. I think that in future we’ll need houses that allow us to share living space and work flexibly. And what would be a good model for the future?  My son Taichi Kuma lived in one. He’s 35, and also an architect. It’s a small apartment – but also a housing model for the future: He invited friends to live there with him, there were seven of them. Everyone has their own room and there are shared spaces for eating and working. A classic apartment share! Did he design it himself?  No, that was a few years ago now, when he was still a student. My wife, Satoko Shinohara, designed it with Spatial Design Studio, her firm in Tokyo. Share Yaraicho is the first house of its kind in Tokyo: It’s made of plastic and wood, and instead of doors there are zippers for closing the entrances. In 2014 it won an award from the AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan). I thought it was a great model for a time when more than every second person in our city lives alone and housing prices are skyrocketing. There’s a quote from your fellow architect Tadao Ando: “Kuma lives in a totally new age.” Would you have expected a compliment like that from him?  I was delighted by it. Although I’ve always been very outspoken about criticizing Ando-san, I also value and respect him. That’s why I was really touched to get that kind of recognition from him.

architecture of sculptural objects. In the 20th century, many architects had the goal of building isolated monuments that set themselves apart from their surroundings as clearly as possible. That mindset is no longer in keeping with the needs of our time. We’re more aware of our surroundings, we live in them, not against them like a backdrop any more. “Anti-Object” is the term I coined for that attitude.

CHANGE

SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH Continued from page 63

In Antarctica, underwater photography is not for the f ainthearted. At water temperatures of m inus 2° C, filming was only possible as long as the camera operator was able to withstand the cold.

This distinction may mystify those beyond the Natural History Unit, but its filmmakers distinguish between natural history and “environmental” filmmaking. The former focus on animal or plant biology and behavior; the latter address environmental issues. Attenborough’s 2006 BBC two-parter “The Truth About Climate Change” was his first to address global warming explicitly. Three years later came “How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth?,” which reflected his long-standing concern over the rising human population. In 2019 came a new Attenborough BBC documentary, “Climate Change: The Facts.” This year, the BBC is broadcasting another, “Extinction: The Facts.” The arrival of “Blue Planet II” in 2017 heralded a new urgency to Attenborough’s blockbusters, helping transform popular attitudes towards waste and pollution with its images of plastic enveloping a turtle, and albatrosses unwittingly feeding plastic bags to their chicks. It explained the importance of rainforest for a habitable climate, and almost no stunning sequence of wild animals came without Attenborough emphasizing the precariousness of their continued existence. Likewise, in “Seven Worlds, One Planet,” the environmental messages are no longer restricted to an appeal at the end of each episode. The first story about the impact of climate change comes 16 minutes into the opening episode. Throughout, there are sequences that highlight the human actions – climate change, pollution, habitat destruction, poaching – causing Earth’s sixth great planetary extinction. At 94, Attenborough is more in demand than ever. His daughter keeps a watchful eye on him and tries in vain to scale back his

254

speaking engagements and charitable commitments. The BBC wants him to narrate “Planet Earth III,” but he will be 96 when the time comes. Meanwhile, he devotes most of his considerable stamina to appealing for radical action to tackle the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. In Poland, at the U.N. climate change summit in 2018, he was chosen to represent the world’s people in addressing leaders from almost 200 nations. At Davos, in early 2019, he questioned the wisdom of perpetual economic growth: only “a madman or an economist” would cling to this notion, he argued. In fall of 2019, Attenborough launched “Seven Worlds, One Planet” with an exhausting round of interviews to journalists from six continents, while a police helicopter buzzed over Extinction Rebellion protests on the streets of London. At the premiere, when I asked if he was comfortable about his films inspiring Extinction Rebellion, he replied sharply: “Extinction Rebellion doesn’t have the monopoly of people who care about the planet. That’s a section of people who care about the planet, but everybody should care about the planet. We’re citizens of the planet. We have the dominance of it and we ought to care about it.” Attenborough has been supportive of school climate strikers, and likes to suggest that the planet now belongs in younger hands. He remains visibly fascinated by all kinds of life and social change around him, but instinctively cleaves to the role of his lifetime – as an interested observer, watching a new generation clamoring for environmental change. “I’m old and they are young. They have their own techniques and their own ethos. It’s their world, not mine.”

Ever since he was asked, as a bit of a joke, to open a visitor center at a nature reserve by the village of Attenborough in Nottinghamshire, in 1966, he has given rousing speeches (I have seen several) at hundreds of events for nature charities across Britain. It is hard to find a visitor center at a Wildlife Trust nature reserve that does not feature a silver plaque declaring that it was “Opened by Sir David Attenborough.” To his critics, these good deeds do not make up for what they see as Attenborough’s great failing as a broadcaster. Putting the case for the prosecution, the journalist George Monbiot has accused Attenborough of “knowingly creating a false impression of the world” by making films that underplay humanity’s impact on the planet and fail to identify the forces driving mass extinction and the climate crisis. Another environmentalist told me that Attenborough possesses irreproachable integrity, but his long silence on extinction and global warming in his television work has contributed towards a popular knowledge deficit. As a young producer, it was drilled into Attenborough that private convictions must not be aired in public. He has always upheld the values of the liberal establishment and taken the traditional BBC line on party-political neutrality. “I’m not a political chap, I know about bugs,” he protested when asked about Brexit in 2017. (When pushed, he revealed that he voted to remain.) Attenborough has also long defended his work with a “show the wonders and then people will care” argument. To a sympathetic observer, the lack of campaigning films in Attenborough’s oeuvre might look like a canny political calculation about the most effective way to shift popular opinion over the long term. But it may just reflect his temperament. “I made natural history programs not because I was a rampaging proselytizer preaching about conservation,” he told me. “I like looking at animals and seeing what they do.” In November 2004, nearly 20 years after the phrase “global warming” was first coined, Attenborough attended a lecture in Belgium given by Ralph Cicerone, an American expert on atmospheric chemistry. The graphs that Cicerone presented, showing the rise in global temperatures, finally convinced Attenborough, beyond any doubt, that humans were responsible for the changing climate. Attenborough insists he was never a skeptic about man-made climate change; just cautious. Even after Cicerone’s lecture, he still believed his job was to make programs about wildlife. He worried that people would think he was setting himself up as an expert on climate science. Attenborough’s output changed, however.

PERSONAL

Ultimately stackable

The first modular home for individualists is called Bert. It was designed by the Precht architecture studio in collaboration with Baumbau, a startup that specializes in tiny houses, tree houses and other eco-buildings used in alternative tourism. Boasting a footprint not much bigger than that of an oversized tree trunk, this modular home can be put up almost a nywhere. Different elements stack on top of each other and the large round windows point in different directions. The interior areas – kitchen, living room and bedroom – are hung with a dark fabric, creating a dark, cozy atmosphere. If this modular home reminds you of a Minion, it’s no coincidence. Both the yellow, goggle-wearing cartoon characters and Sesame Street inspired the architects’ design. Sustainability plays an important role in the design as well: The timber-clad construction has solar panels for producing renewable energy, a self-composting toilet and a water treatment system. Bert is also available in varying configurations: It can be used as a garden house or something much bigger, like a multi-family house or even a hotel. All of the elements are prefabricated and assembled on location. And if your requirements change and you need more space once the tree house is standing, all you have to do is stack another element on top.

The first Berts by Rudi Obauer (l.) and Chris Precht are scheduled for completion this year.
