WELCOME

P

roximity to water is as essential to me as having room to breathe. I have lived in Hamburg near the Elbe River since my childhood, and it has shaped me in countless ways. When I watch the large container ships enter the harbor on my

daily walks, unforgettable memories come back to me – like learning to sail on cutters in the harbor when I was a teen-

ager. Only a few minutes’ walk away, on Hamburg’s famous Elbchaussee avenue, is where I founded Engel & Völkers over 40 years ago. We also built our present-day company headquarters in Hamburg’s HafenCity neighborhood, in a prominent waterfront location on the Elbe River. I consider it a privilege to live in a place so strongly connected to this element that we are so magically attracted to. The good news is that demand for waterfront properties is still high. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, our offices in the U.S. have reported record demand for homes in Florida with access to a body of water and jetties. Our E&V lakeside ranking, in which we list the top prices for residential properties we broker in regions around lakes, also shows how popular such pieces of real estate are at the moment: Top of the list is a villa on the shore of Lake Austin in Texas priced at 34.5 million euros, followed by properties on the shores of Lake Lugano in Switzerland and the Lake of Sainte-Croix in France. Their rarity and desirability turn estates in locations like these into absolute prime real estate. Clients from around the world are looking for homes on the Côte d’Azur, for example. However, properties for sale that also boast sea views, or even private access to the sea, are the absolute exception. The size of the property and its amenities are additional factors when making purchasing decilist. Further pivotal criteria are a property’s proximity to nature and a desire for

privacy. Following the outbreak of COVID-19, this trend only intensified. In this

Summer splash!

In no other season do we feel more drawn to water than now. We drink it nicely chilled to refresh ourselves, jump into the pool with our children or dream of vacations by the sea. But where does this yearning come from? Maybe because all life starts with water and up to 70 percent of our human body consists of it. It’s also our most essential nutrient. We need to drink six to eight glasses a day to stay healthy; without it we can’t survive for longer than three days. More than two thirds of the surface of our planet is covered by water, the seven continental landmasses only make up 29 percent. These are only some of the fascinating facts that inspired us for this Water Issue. Meet inspirational personalities who have dedicated their lives to fighting for the health of our oceans, like the iconic 85-year-old oceanographer Sylvia Earle, who is still tirelessly fighting to save marine life by creating protected areas in our open seas she calls Hope Spots. Get to know the former soccer pro Benjamin Adrion who founded the organization Viva con Agua and has already helped 3 million people gain access to clean drinking water. Admire the creative wake-up call of artists and their creations made from plastic ocean garbage and immerse yourself in stunning floating architectural visions, some of which are already being realized. And if you are secretly dreaming of living on the ocean and looking for a spectacular new home, we invite you aboard the modern ketch Rox Star!

Have a lovely summer!

ts location alone indicates that this city is anything but ordinary. With its back to the barren desert, the unique metropolis of Dubai faces the Persian Gulf, whose waves gently lap against its roughly 60 kilometers of shoreline. With its skyscrapers and manmade groups of islands, this city of superlatives holds more than 400 world records. Until recently, its motto was the more, the better. So the new goal that Dubai has set itself is all the more surprising: The metropolis plans to meet 75 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2050, which would make it the world’s most climate-friendly city. The UAE government increasingly backs environmental and climate protection measures. Located 25 kilometers outside the downtown area, The Sustainable City leads the way with its e-mobility and solar energy infrastructure and an exemplary carbon footprint. All its buildings were constructed using sustainable methods. A park with 2,500 trees is designed to improve air quality. Cars are banned in the entire district, single-use plastic in parts of it. Instead, people use canvas shopping bags and drink from the many water fountains. Waste water is filtered thoroughly before being discharged into two artificial lakes. Residences in this futuristic development cost upwards of one million dollars and 2,700 people have already moved in. The Museum of the Future, which is scheduled to open by the end of the year, will showcase and promote innovative, sustainable approaches. The elliptical building, seemingly constructed around a central void, was conceived by the Killa Design architectural firm. It is reminiscent of an eye keeping watch over the city. Roughly 50 kilometers from there, the world’s largest solar power plant is currently being constructed. It includes an innovation center, which is run by the Dubai Electricity &

21

Water Authority (DEWA) and aims to become a global hub for sustainable energy generation. Given all this, it is surprisingly non-ecofriendly that people in Dubai use their car to make even the shortest trips, citing the incredible heat as the main reason for this. Because tourists in particular struggle with the temperatures of up to 50° C, even golf courses, bus stops and beach clubs are air-conditioned. Looking at the impressive skyscrapers and futuristic residential neighborhoods it is difficult to imagine that this city has sprung up from the desert in only 50 years. At the start of the twentieth century, the port city of Dubai developed into an international trading hub for goods from Persia and India. The discovery of oil changed everything. The transformation into a metropolis, which forms the bedrock of its society today, began with the first oil exports in 1969. The historical Al Fahidi neighborhood gives an insight into what the city looked like before the boom times. Roughly 50 traditional buildings made of clay, masonry and palm wood line the winding alleyways. The Dubai Museum, which is also located here, tells the story of the city, including that of the traditional camel races at Al Marmoom, which date back to the seventh century and still take place today. Plastic Fantastic

Ocean plastics aren’t garbage, but a chance to create something new. At least that’s what Australian designer Brodie Neill believes. He created the Gyro Table from countless tiny pieces of marine plastic. The fragments were collected on beaches all over the world and sent in by a huge network of people Neill had mobilized via social media. The name of the table references ocean gyres, which are large systems of circulating ocean currents. The idea of a maelstrom also inspired the arrangement of colors on the table top. The speckles are reminiscent of a terrazzo floor made of marble or granite and the black, white and different hues of blue reflect the various features of the sea. An international team of researchers, engineers and scientists helped Neill process the fragments of plastic. The designer is looking to refine the material so that it can be utilized at an industrial scale.

The Gyro Table is made out of ocean plastic and was commissioned for the 2016 London Design Biennale. Would you like to know more?

INTERVIEW

Water Movement Seth Maxwell’s organization the Thirst Project has helped some 500,000 people get access to clean drinking water.

The Thirst Project is the world’s leading youth organization in the fight for clean water – what exactly does that mean?  We’re an international network of high school and college students who are trying to end the global water crisis. We appeal specifically to young people because they are the world’s most powerful agents for social change – the generation that can change everything.

How do you reach so many young people?  We continue to give educational talks in schools, but since we know our target group, we also use Instagram, TikTok and other social media platforms to get the word out. In fact, we were one of the first groups to use social media. It also helped that teen celebrities like actor Ansel Elgort and “Modern Family” star Nolan Gould organized fundraising drives. That got us a lot of publicity. Why does your work focus primarily on the Kingdom of eSwatini in Southern Africa? The kingdom has highest incidence of HIV/ AIDS anywhere in the world. Unclean water can be lethal, particularly to people who are HIV-positive. With a population of only 1.1 million, eSwatini is also relatively small. We want the entire country to have access to clean drinking water by 2022.

2.2 billion people have no access to clean drinking water. The Thirst Project is a non-profit organization made up of young people dedicated to ending the global water crisis. Would you like to know more?

INTERVIEW: CHRISTINA LIBUDA; PHOTOS: THIRST PROJECT

You were 19 and a student yourself when you discovered that billions of people didn’t have clean drinking water. What happened then?   I told my girlfriend and we started educating young people about the water crisis. Their reactions and the initiatives they started were amazing. In just a short period of time, they raised more than 12,000 dollars to help build wells in Africa. That was in 2008, the year I established the Thirst Project. Since then, we’ve reached out to 500,000 high school students and thanks to them, we’ve been able to raise more than 10 million dollars and help 500,000 people in 13 countries get access to clean drinking water.

NEWS FROM THE CEO

Dubai – a city of (real estate) superlatives

D

ubai is the most populated of the seven emirates that form the UAE. Its eponymous capital city developed – within a very short space of time – from a small fishing village into a thriving metropolis stunningly located between the desert and the sea. Dubai International Airport is one of the world’s leading aviation hubs and guaranteed to be in easy reach from almost anywhere – a massive advantage for the tourism and real estate industries. In Dubai itself, visitors will encounter luxurious lifestyles, high levels of personal safety and a whole host of superlatives: At 828 meters high, the Burj Khalifa tower is the world’s tallest building, while the Dubai Mall is the world’s biggest shopping center. Dubai reveals its Middle Eastern soul in the lively souks, traditional Arab markets that sell jewelry, spices, clothing and a whole lot more. Those wishing to unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle can escape into the desert or into one of the emirate’s many excellent hotels. It’s this variety that attracts real estate buyers from all over the world to Dubai. International celebrities like David and Victoria Beckham and superstars like Madonna have bought properties here. The house owned by the Queen of Pop is partly built below the waterline and boasts amazing views of fish and dolphins from the living quarters. But you don’t have to own real estate in Dubai to enjoy such unique views of the marine world. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the Underwater Suite at the prestigious Atlantis The Palm luxury hotel on the man-made Palm J umeirah island give on to an aquarium that’s home to more than 60,000 marine animals.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, real estate transactions worth 16.3 billion euros were completed in Dubai during the first half of 2020. Recent figures from the Dubai Land Department show that, compared with the previous year, the number of residential properties brokered increased by over 10 percent in January 2021. Most buyers hail from India, Saudi Arabia, China, Great Britain and the United Arab Emirates themselves. But we have also observed increased demand from within Europe, particularly from Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. The most popular properties at present are villas and town houses as well as apartments with access to the beach. Experts estimate that real estate prices in Dubai will rise by 5 to 10 percent as a result of the Expo this fall. Postponed by a year due to the pandemic, it is now scheduled to open on October 1, 2021. It will be the first world fair on the Arabian Peninsula. With more than 190 country pavilions, numerous events and extraordinary architecture on display, the Expo promises to be an event of superlatives. I personally find Dubai endlessly fascinating. Every time I visit, there’s another spectacular project to admire. It seems like there’s no limit to people’s imagination – there’s nothing you won’t find in Dubai. Our Market Center, which is a particularly large office, has a portfolio that reflects the enormous breadth of what the market has to offer. The real estate available ranges from modern luxury properties and elegant villas to penthouses with views of the Burj Khalifa. Make sure you plan a trip to Dubai: You have to see this city of grand visions for yourself!

In Cape Town, former soccer pro Benjamin Adrion is taking Viva con Agua to the next level.

Fighting for a purpose with a positive mindset – that was the idea of Benjamin Adrion when he created his nonprofit organization Viva con Agua 15 years ago. Every since, the former professional soccer player has helped over 3.6 million people gain access to clean drinking water. Now the father of two embarks on the next, more international chapter. For the next chapter of his non profit organization Viva con Agua, Benjamin Adrion has just moved to Cape Town.

B

enjamin Adrion was just 25 when he made the life-changing decision to retire from professional soccer altogether. The wake-up call came in the form of a trip to Cuba and the realization that there is a global need: for access to clean drinking water. Fifteen years on the feel-good attitude and team spirit of his former soccer days are still alive and have helped his organization Viva con Agua become a global movement that counts 15,000 active volunteers in countries like Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Uganda. With the opening of the Villa Viva in Cape Town, the social entrepreneur is now heading into an international future. Almost 15 years ago exactly, you decided to change your life. Instead of signing with a football club for another season, you left professional soccer behind and created Viva con Agua – a charity organization fighting for access to clean drinking water for all. How does it feel today when you look back? That was an important moment in my life, of course. Playing soccer had been my job for six years. I had started training professionally from the age of ten or twelve and made the national team at 14. In between I stopped playing soccer for about nine months when I was 18 because the daily grind was already starting to get to me. I realized that I had been wondering for a while: When would my life really start? At the time my team had won the German league title and had played for VfB Stuttgart, the club that has won the most German youth soccer league championships to date. I took it all very seriously. That’s why, looking back, I’ve never felt that I quit soccer early. Instead, I thought: I’ve already spent the first third of my life dedicated to that sport.

Great marketing tool. The organization uses the mineral water to raise awareness. All profits go into its projects.

www.gg-magazine.com

Where did you get the idea for Viva con Agua?   It was a lucky coincidence. Our first idea was to use the connections I had made via the German club I was signed to at the time, FC St. Pauli, to create a fresh, fun and enjoyable route into social activism. Our approach was to make the world a better place through networking, community and rock’n’roll. We wanted to create an “all-profit” organization because “nonprofit” just doesn’t sound like fun. In the beginning, the thing I was most concerned about was creating a movement, a platform and an ethos of “let’s get something done together.” That’s what “Viva” stands for and it still shows, even 15 years on – whether it’s Viva con Agua or Villa Viva, our new headquarters in the center of Cape Town – “Viva” is always part of it. What we are primarily about is creating connections, enjoy-

41

ing life and working for a cause. The focus on clean drinking water came about by connecting with the right partner organization. After attending a soccer training camp in Cuba, we were put in touch with Welthungerhilfe, a German NGO running a drinking water project locally. It was fortuitous, because water is essential for all life – everyone understands that. But at first, it wasn’t just about water for me, I wanted a strong message like: “Hey, we live such priviledged lives and have so many opportunities. We have absolutely no excuse not to roll up our sleeves and organize help somehow together.” Your first project kicked off a year before the official founding of your organization. Starting in 2005 and working with Welthungerhilfe, you installed water fountains in 153 kindergartens in Cuba. Today, Viva con Agua has 15,000 active volunteers in places like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Uganda. Last year Viva con Agua was also launched in South Africa. Where does your strong commitment to social issues come from – is it something you learned at home, growing up?  No, I wouldn’t say so. I grew up in southern Germany, in Stuttgart, the oldest of three siblings. So being the leader has always felt easy to me, whether as class speaker or captain of a soccer team. Also, I’ve always had a strong sense of fairness. I still notice this, like when my son makes a disparaging remark today to one of his buddies. Immediately, my alarm bells go off. What was the particular moment that sparked your social activism?  It must have been on the trip back from Jamaica, that special island with its unique vibe and home of Rastafarian culture. We had a one-day stop-over in Miami Beach. In the evening we went to the famous Ocean Drive and were suddenly surrounded by stretch

limos and lots of what I think were surgically enhanced people. They all looked like they were at a really cool party, but when you studied them more closely, you realized: They seemed to be made of plastic and empty inside! It felt like such a contrast to what I had experienced in Jamaica. A real culture shock! I just thought: Man, and this is what they call progress? This is what we are supposed to aspire to? Is this development? Just focusing on the exterior, with no connection to what’s actually important? I was 23 then, and it was the first time I deeply realized how skewed our priorities had become. It was an eye-opening moment. Today, I would advise anyone to spend some time in a non-industrialized country every now and again. It really changes your perspective and makes you realize how very privileged we are. Since the foundation of Viva con Agua, the global situation regarding drinking water has improved dramatically. Fifteen years ago, 1.2 billion people were still without access to clean drinking water, today it is only half that. These numbers sound like a big success. Has the need for water really decreased by half?  Of course this is encouraging. Since 2010, the UN has recognized access to clean water and safe sanitary facilities as a human right. Furthermore, thanks to our projects, Viva con Agua was able to improve the living conditions of 3.6 million people and keep increasing awareness of the issue. But we should not forget: There are still almost 600 million people without access to clean water – more than the entire population of the EU. And more than 2 billion people still don’t have access to proper sanitary facilities. On top of that we’re also heading for a water crisis. It is important to understand that private, personal water use represents only 10 percent of the global demand, while the majority, 90 percent, is used for agriculture and manufacturing. And that demand will only increase further. Add to that the impact of climate change. So the real message is: Great, more people have access. That’s progress, let’s keep it going. But at the same time, we can’t ignore the challenges we are facing ahead. You’re referring to virtual water – the amount of water that is actually needed to manufacture a certain product, right?  Exactly. It is a well-known fact that producing beef is extremely water-intensive (Editor’s note: Producing just 1 kilo of beef requires up to 15,000 liters of water), but also things like coffee, avocados or cotton have a large water footprint – and our consumption keeps rising. In the past, people used to live differently, for example they only had one Sunday roast

45

a week. In the Western world today, people have gotten into the habit of consuming meat on a daily basis. This trend has now, belatedly, also reached other countries. Take South A frica, for example: In rural areas, people very rarely have meat. It’s a treat reserved for the holidays. But even in Cape Town, this has already changed completely. In my view, it’s an intrinsic development that isn’t just limited to the consumption of meat. People aspire to the best they can afford – a home of their own, a car. Everyone wants a lifestyle based on what they see in the West. The problem is: This role model is not sustainable. …  so you’re saying that when people reach a certain level of aff luence, only then do they start thinking about the fact that things can’t continue the way they’ve been going?  Yes, at some point you realize: All that money in the bank doesn’t make you happy. The new car is fun for two weeks but then you get used to it and it’s nothing special anymore. In addition, we’ve created an unsustainable template for living our lives, so we can’t now turn around and say to others: “Well, it was OK for us, but it isn’t for you.” That’s why the pressure on water systems remains huge and keeps rising steadily. This is also true in other areas: I recently read a report that said that in 2020, human-made mass had reached about 1.1 teratons, exceeding overall global biomass. Despite this news, are you hopeful that people’s attitudes will have changed due to the COVID-19 crisis? Has the pandemic made humanity realize that we in the end only share this planet and that each of our actions impact one another?  I think there’s an element of that. On the other hand, there’s also a trend of countries turning inward and focusing on themselves. I’ve noticed that in Germany, for example, people have been criticizing the “catastrophic” slow rate of vaccination because the population won’t be fully vaccinated by July and maybe not until September or October of this year. At the same time, people are only marginally interested in the fact that more than 100 countries have not even received a single shipment of vaccines! In addition to this, I am worried about the fact that the pandemic has further widened the gap between rich and poor. How has the pandemic impacted your business?  It came as quite a shock – as donations at social events are our only source of income. So from one day to the next, our fundraising activities just came to a complete stop. Viva con Agua mostly works together with festivals or concerts, or soccer-stadium events. COVID-19 was like a punch to the gut and it struck at Viva con Agua’s core activities. That said,

activities to consumers. How exactly does the mineral water business work? Can you explain? One hundred percent of the profits from the licensing fees go back into the social projects: 60 percent to Viva con Agua, 40 percent to the partners who reinvest that money into our other social enterprise models. So in the end all the profits are reinvested in good causes.

“COVID-19 felt like a punch to the gut of our core activities. All fundraising events came to a complete stop.” BENJAMIN ADRION we managed to get through last year considerably well, which is quite remarkable, and our chapter in G ermany did particularly well. There, overall turnover in 2020 was only three percent less than in 2019 and we were able to transfer more donations to the water projects than ever before – a record-breaking amount of more than 3 million euros. This is partly due to us being able to cut costs thanks to the German government’s reduced working hours support program and thanks to scale down some expenditure. That’s gratifying and it shows that Viva con Agua has managed to become so flexible that we can emerge from a crisis even stronger. Pressure creates diamonds – and the same principle applies to us. The Viva con Agua mineral water company, however, is not doing quite as well. Because hospitality businesses were closed, we only managed to sell 27 million bottles of the projected 40 million.

BANK DETAILS FOR DONATIONS  Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli e. V. Account: DE58 2005 0550 1268 1351 81 Swift code: HASPDEHHXXX

For anyone who wants to support your work, besides donating to your organization, purchasing the Viva con Agua mineral water is the easiest and most logical way. It’s available at many beverage retailers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and all profits from the mineral water business are reinvested into your charity projects. At the same time, the mineral water is your strongest marketing tool, creating awareness for your cause On the label, Viva con Agua describes its social

Viva con Agua has transformed from a Hamburg, Germany based organization to one that is now active on the international stage. Are there plans to work with personalities who are pursuing similar goals, like, for instance, Bill Gates?  Well, Bill Gates hasn’t called yet, but I would be more than happy to take his call (he laughs). In fact we have had some contact with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation already, as they also support water projects, of course. Our goal for the next 15 years is quite clear: we are now focussing on establishing an even more international approach. The Villa Viva in Cape Town, which we are in the process of establishing as our South African headquarters, was financed by investors who are friends of mine. For over 30 years, this location here in Cape Town was a stopping point for backpackers from all over the world – Brazil, Norway, Kenya. We would very much like for it to remain that way. So yes, absolutely: Cape Town is a radical, international departure for us! Are former professional soccer player destined to reach their goals more efficiently? In what ways has your former career prepared you for achieving your goals in your current work with Viva con Agua?  There are actually quite a few parallels to running an organization and living among a society in a broader sense. Because the fundamental values of soccer are universal: Fair play! Or: You treat me well – I treat you well. There’s actually an interesting quote by Thomas Müller, uttered after the most recent Champions League season in which Bayern Munich played better than ever before. He said: “We argue about the best ways to help each other out.” If that’s your team’s mindset, you’ll be successful. And this isn’t just limited to soccer. We might write a book about this fascinating dynamic one day. Let’s see ... One last question: In 2009 you were awarded the medal of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by Horst Köhler, the Federal President of Germany at the time. You invited your parents to join you to that ceremony. Are they proud of their son?  (He smiles) My parents and I have a great relationship and I can definitely say that they like what we do. Would you like to know more?

54

T

he challenges our planet is currently facing have inspired leading architects to look into new possibilities for how to turn bodies of water into f ascinating new development sites.

The reason Dutch architect Koen Olthuis has become a pioneer of aquatic architecture is all to do with water. “I always joke that we’re a fake country. Half of the Netherlands is actually below sea level. We’ve wrested our country from the waves, and all our urban planning is shaped by this struggle with water.” At some point the architect, who was born in 1971 and is based in The Hague, thought: “Why don’t we stop fighting it and look at bodies of water as new development sites.” Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water today, with many of the word’s largest cities located on coastlines. If sea levels continue to rise due to climate change, the remaining land will become even more crowded. By the year 2050, the world’s population is predicted to rise to roughly 9.7 billion, 70 percent of whom will be living in major urban centers. Up until now most of the efforts to open up new locations for development have been limited to land reclamation projects: Odaiba Island in Tokyo, the South Korean smart city of Songdo, Hong Kong’s huge, new West Kowloon cultural district, which includes an opera building, art museum and concert halls – and last, but not least: the Palm Islands, a series of artificial peninsulas in Dubai. Such extreme interventions in the environment are usually ecological catastrophes – both on land, where the sand is taken from, and below the waterline, where it is deposited. “We have to change our thinking: Green is good, but blue is better,” says Olthuis. Being the grandson of an architect on his father’s side and the grandson of a shipbuilder on his mother’s side, he drew on both traditions and concluded: A floating building is better than a static one. “I don’t really see myself as an architect, but rather as a doctor for cities,” he says. “And water is my medicine.” Since founding the Waterstudio architecture firm in 2003, he and his team have constructed just shy of 300 floating houses and office buildings, most of them in the Netherlands. The BBC aptly dubbed him “the floating Dutchman.” His team is also designing floating villas, villages and golf courses in the Maldives, and entire neighborhoods in the Netherlands. Few of his ground-breaking ideas have made it past the design stage so far, but that is about to change: The Arkup is a cross between a

yacht and a house, a zero-emission luxury v illa, powered by solar energy and equipped with its own waste management, rainwater collection and water treatment systems. It’s even designed to withstand hurricanes and floods, because it will rise and fall with the tides. The Arkup has just been sold for 5.5 million dollars, which is a lot less than what most big yachts go for. Olthuis has also conceived the Sea Tree, a floating high-rise building designed to house wildlife and so improve the biodiversity and water quality in large conurbations. The first of these will be completed in the Chinese city of Kunming as early as this summer. The Parthenon – a kind of floating, permeable seawall that turns wave energy into electricity – will also soon start operating off the Norwegian coast. But Olthuis doesn’t just design for the planet’s more affluent communities: Floating houses could also be the solution for the expanding wet slums, as they are referred to – slums located by the water in some African and Asian coastal cities. His Floating City Apps, which resemble shipping containers, could provide much-needed infrastructure: accommodation, water treatment facilities, mobile schools or spaces for electricity generation and food production. Six of the floating buildings have already been constructed. During the current pandemic, they are being used as meeting points for the crews of container ships. Reportedly, the first word uttered by the young son of Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and his Spanish wife Rut Otero was “agua” (water). Ingels and his firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) are among the industry’s big hitters. His current projects include Google’s new headquarters in Silicon Valley, museums and cultural centers from Bordeaux to Mexico, banking towers in Frankfurt and an eco-friendly waste incineration plant in Denmark. He has also recently moved into his new home in Copenhagen’s harbor: a roughly 38-meter long, decommissioned ferry. Every porthole and window gives onto the water. The ship provides Ingels with an opportunity to apply the principles he advocates – on a smaller scale – in his own life. “Floating houses are the most resilient architectural structures,” he told Architectural Digest. “When sea levels rise, so do houseboats.” Ingels has dropped anchor in close proximity to the

FLOATING TIMBER TOWER

TINY FLOATS  That’s the company for whom Waterstudio designed its floating prefabs. Priced at € 65,000 plus tax, the smallest model measures 18 square meters.

Urban R igger project also c onceived by him. The standardized floating containers serve as affordable accommodation for college students in Copenhagen. His vision for Oceanix City, which he proposed to UN-Habitat in 2019 as a future urban planning solution, is even larger in scale. It’s designed to be an actual floating city made up of sustainable, modular structures for up to 10,000 people – a sort of blueprint for the first maritime metropolis. The modules are moveable and can be added to, allowing neighborhoods to grow into villages, or even cities. Oceanix City developments could be located off larger coastal towns and also towed to a different location if a natural disaster were to occur. For additional safety, all the modules are designed to withstand floods, tsunamis and even category 5 hurricanes. Oceanix City is also designed to be a zero-emission development and would be powered by clean wave and solar energy. Cutting-edge steam distillation technology, atmospheric water generators and rain collection systems would provide fresh drinking water. Closed-loop recycling would ensure zero waste production and prevent w ater wastage. Located in Norway – just inside the Arctic Circle where the melting polar ice sheet is causing sea levels to rise – the Svart Hotel is scheduled to open before the end of the year. Designed by award-winning Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, it is billed as the world’s first hotel to be a net generator of energy. Looking like a life ring on wooden columns, it protrudes into the fjord at the foot of the darkblue Svartisen glacier, which it is named after, and can only be reached by boat. The circular structure that rises above the water was chosen in order to maximize the time the photovoltaic cells on its roof can be used to collect solar

energy. And, of course, to provide hotel guests with panoramic views of the magnificent glacier and the spectacular northern lights. The aim is for the hotel to be completely independent of the electricity grid and operate self-sufficiently within five years of opening. The hotel has its own greenhouses, and an energy-neutral shuttle boat runs to and from the nearby city of Bodø. The desert capital of Abu Dhabi is rich in oil and sunshine, but it lacks sources of fresh water and rainwater too, of course, so precipitation is considered a gift from heaven. This is why water is the dominant architectural theme of the prestigious Louvre Abu Dhabi building, completed by Jean Nouvel in 2017. The structure, which Nouvel himself has called one of his best, exudes an awe-inspiring spiritual energy thanks to the sophisticated interplay of light, shadow and water. Its eye-catching, low-lying dome is 180 meters in diameter and seems to float above the coastal waters of the Gulf. The delicate, multi-layered structure is reminiscent of Arab mosaics and consists of 8,000 metal stars. When sunlight falls through the dome, it is reflected onto the walls and the surfaces of the water, creating continuous optical showers of light. The building could be even better if it was actually floating, says Koen Olthuis. A mobile museum of art and culture would be a game-changer in terms of promoting a sharing economy approach. However, the region may soon get its first floating museum after all. The Gulf state of Qatar has already asked Olthuis to come up with a design for one, but Waterstudio will first be completing a slightly smaller project: the L’île O, a floating theater building, is scheduled to open in the French city of Lyon in 2022. “No water, no life. No blue, no green,” says Sylvia Earle, summing up her life’s work. And, even more succinctly: “No ocean, no us.” To drive her message home, she admonishes: “Treat the ocean as if your life depends on it, because it does,” adding that the ocean supplies half of the oxygen we breathe and more carbon is captured in its depths than anywhere else on earth. We don’t have much time left to take action! She then fleshes out her stark message, explaining that in the last 50 years more than 90 percent of the big fish in the oceans have vanished, highlighting how important sharks are for the entire ecosystem, and what a central role the coral reefs play. “But we’ve already lost half of all the world’s reefs.” With dire precision, she lists the incredible destruction that we have wreaked in just a single generation. Earle is in a better position to judge this than most, having

63

seen with her own eyes just how much life under the surface has changed in the past decades. She points out that most swordfish now no longer live long enough to breed: “Eating these fish is like eating the last Bengal tigers!” Her unadorned truths helped the oceans in 2006, when the American marine scientist, easily the most famous oceanographer of her generation, found herself sitting next to then U.S. president George W. Bush at a dinner. Sylvia Earle seized the opportunity. Bush, who really hadn’t struck many people as being particularly interested in environmental protection, listened to her. She said: “If the fishermen are to survive, they need fish,” and went on to explain that the fish needed protection zones because otherwise there wouldn’t be any fish left. Soon after, Bush stunned not just his critics by creating what was then the world’s largest marine conservation area off the coast of Hawaii: Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. At the signing ceremony, the president said that Earle had given him “a pretty good lecture about life.” The designated area was 140,000 square miles or, as Bush put it, an area one hundred times larger than Yosemite National Park. In 2009, during his last days in office, he

expanded it by 150 percent. Seven years later, his successor Barack Obama quadrupled the size of the protected area. From a very early age, Sylvia Earle knew that she wanted to become a scientist. She gained her doctorate from Duke University with a thesis on algae. The 85-year-old has spent over 7,000 hours of her long life underwater, more than nine months in total. She has been in scary situations, like being surrounded by dozens of sharks, and still had only one desire: to return to the unexplored depths of the ocean, even deeper into the darkness, to places where no one had been before her. “Onward and downward,” is how she describes her driving force. In 1979, she donned a diving suit that looked like it had been designed for the moon, and plunged over 381 meters without a tether, a feat that remains an unbroken world record. She remained on the seabed for two hours on her own. Earle was three years old when she first encountered the ocean. While visiting a New Jersey beach with her parents and her brothers, she was knocked over by a wave. “The ocean certainly got my attention!,” is how she describes what could have been an enduring shock. When she was 12, the family moved to Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico became her backyard. She has led more than 100 expeditions over the course of her career, written more than a dozen books – and was a pioneer in everything she did. Astonishingly, she also had time for a personal life, was married three times and has three children. In 1964, she took part in an expedition – as the only woman in a group of 70 men. Six years later, she remained underwater for two weeks, leading a group of five female researchers in a laboratory situated at a depth of 15 meters. This was a first: There had never been female aquanauts before, and even the first female astronauts were only admitted into the training programs eight years later. The media pounced on the female crew, christening them “Aquababes,” “Aquachicks,” and “Aquanaughties.” Chicago threw them a celebratory ticker-tape parade on their return. Sylvia Earle was the first woman to be appointed chief scientist of the National Oceanographic Administration in Washington, D.C., and she was featured on the cover of Time magazine in 2017. “Mission Blue,” the Netflix documentary about her life and her commitment to the oceans, has been watched by millions, and she’s an idol for countless young activists and scientists. Earle lives in Oakland, in San Francisco Bay, and still dives. She holds lectures for schoolchildren and UN delegations, tweets and makes sure her warnings are heard. Of course, she also has her own Instagram

a ccount with more than 13,000 followers, despite having only published five posts so far. She founded two companies, the most recent of which has been operating for nearly 30 years and manufactures mini submersibles. As a diver, Earle knows best how a mechanical gripper arm needs to be designed to work effectively in the inky depths of the ocean. With her former husband, the British engineer Graham Hawkes, she designed the Deep Rover submersible, which can reach depths of up to 1,000 meters. In 2009, Sylvia Earle held a widely acclaimed TED Talk, in which she warned that the next decade would determine the fate of the next 10,000 years. She won the annual TED Prize, which came with a grant of 100,000 dollars. The award recognizes a wish to change the world. Earle’s wish was to give the ocean as much protection as the land. She used the prize money to set up a foundation, Mission Blue, and started working with a global coalition of over 200 partners to designate Hope Spots – marine protected zones that are scientifically identified as critical to the health of the ocean and its inhabitants. These areas, which include roughly 17,000 kilometers of coastline around New Zealand, have a particular abundance of species. There are presently more than 300 Hope Spots worldwide. When Earle held her TED talk, only one percent of the ocean was protected. That figure is now six percent. With the help of her Hope Spots, ocean savior Earle hopes to raise that to 30 percent by 2030. Would you like to know more?

Every year, plastics kill 135,000 marine mammals and a million seabirds.

C

an art save the oceans? It certainly can open people’s eyes. And maybe it will finally alert us to how much our lifestyles imperil the planet. All one can do is hope.

The objects lay scattered among the washedup shells and seaweed on the beach. Their bright blue and orange colors seemed strange and disconcerting in this environment, yet also fabulous, somehow. Chris Herms-Glang and her daughter had traveled to the North Sea resort of Sankt Peter-Ording from Hamburg for a break from the city – to enjoy the wind blowing through their hair and feel the sand under their feet. The beachgoer ran back to her car and fetched a few plastic bags. These she filled with the matted, unraveled, knotted cords that had feathers, broken shells and seaweed stuck to them. Later she put her loot into old pillowcases and stuck them in the washing machine. Later still, with the bundles of unruly plastic rope lying on her workbench at home, newly cleaned but hardened by seawater, she discovered that they were broken, twisted fishing nets, those nets that are euphemistically and almost poetically called ghost nets. She also learned that a huge quantity of these abandoned nets were drifting in the world’s oceans. The idea for the wigs materialized quickly. The trained graphic designer had spent years working in her field before deciding to attend art college. She was fascinated by performance art, by the idea of combining art and the human body and by working with unconventional, difficult materials. Weren’t these clumps of netting reminiscent of ostentatious, backswept hairstyles, somewhere between the Late Baroque era and pop art? Herms-Glang doesn’t define herself particularly as either an artist or an environmental activist. “I’m keen to explore materials that have not previously been used in art,” she says. Her art explores the colors, aesthetics and technical possibilities offered by the material, as well as the banality of everyday life that it represents, and its inherent ability to tell a story about the current state of our civilization. She pulls a small green book from her handbag – “Plastik” by Pia Ratzesberger – opens it and points to a simple map of the world’s oceans. She explains, her voice suddenly stern and accusing, that scientists discovered the Great P acific Garbage Patch floating between California and Hawaii in the 1990s, a carpet of marine plastics four times the size of Germany. Today there are five of them floating in the world’s oceans.

73

More than five million tons of plastics – fishing nets, PET bottles, shopping bags, straws, toys, coffee cups, fuel containers, beer crates and disposable plates – end up in the oceans every year. It may even be eight or 13 million tons, depending on whether you look at the estimates by the WWF, the Alfred Wegener Institute or the UN. No one really knows for sure. Each year 135,000 marine mammals and a million seabirds are killed by plastics, not to mention a vast number of fish. Add to that the microplastics that quickly reach our dinner plates by way of the seafood and poultry that we eat. According to environmental and marine scientists, by 2050 there will be more plastic waste on the ocean floor or swirling around in the oceans of the world than fish swimming in them. This is a horrifying prospect for anyone who looks into the issue in any depth. You may be captivated at first by the brittle charm of the material, like Chris Herms-Glang was, or instantly realize the deadly peril it represents. We’ve all seen the images: turtles that have choked to death on pieces of plastic, strangled seals, dolphins and herring gulls. Or of the whale that starved to death because its stomach was clogged with 80 plastic bags. Images like these have prompted many to ask: “How do you make the people responsible for all this suffering, i.e. all of us, see the connection?” Artists try to. By aestheticizing the subject matter, by seducing and provoking. And by entertaining. All of these approaches are infinitely more effective than critical speeches and depressing statistics. Those who have trained themselves to look away or to tune out the truth simply have to be coaxed back into engaging with the issue. Mandy Barker has been trying to persuade people for decades. The multi-award winning British photographer joins scientific expeditions from the polar seas to the Pitcairn archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean. She documents what she finds floating in the water or washed up on the beach and uses it to create worlds of pure beauty. Liberated from time and gravity, plastic bottles, artificial flowers and toys are suspended in midair. In her high-resolution prints, even old toothbrushes and deflated soccer balls acquire an awe-inspiring aura. Continued on page 126

... DIVE!

Named after the submarine in Jules Verne’s novels, this private island in the Indian Ocean spoils its guests with bespoke luxury attention. A dreamy destination – not just in times of a pandemic. Welcome to The Nautilus! WORDS: Michaela Cordes  PHOTOS: The Nautilus Maldives

PHOTO: ISTOCK / FILIPPOBACCI

The fabulous Baa Atoll. Where reef sharks (photo), mantas and whale sharks glide through the crystal-clear waters.

Nature in abundance. Over 2,000 different species of fish and at least 200 types of coral populate the waters around the Maldives.

77

Snorkeling before breakfast or watching the sunset from the private terrace? A stay at The Nautilus brings some challenging questions with it. Unforgettable: a stay at an Ocean Residence.

fter half a day of traveling, far away from lockdown restrictions and daily infection updates, I find myself in paradise. I have arrived and my soul immediately … ... plunges into the magic of the surroundings. I can see the ocean shimmering in various shades of blue and green from every part of the island, the white sandy beaches, the palm trees swaying in the wind. It’s so beautiful here that I have to pinch myself to understand that this is reality and not some kind of wild daydream! After showing us to our very impressive Ocean Residence villa set above the water, Aslam, our butler, suggests our first activity. “Let me do the unpacking of your bags while you do your first snorkeling tour along our resort’s reef,” he offers. What a treat! Blinking into the sunlight, I gaze out over our private deck and infinity pool, taking in the glittering sun sparkling on the Indian Ocean. Right there I spot my first blacktip reef shark gliding through the crystal-clear shallows towards our overwater villa. Aslam notices my slightly nervous gaze. “Don’t worry!,” he says in a calming voice, “those reef sharks aren’t a dangerous species at all.” No sharks, no healthy reef, I recall from watching the fascinating TV documentary “A Life on Our P lanet” by D avid Attenborough. Like most of the resorts in the Maldives, The Nautilus is built on an extinct, submarine volcano. The edges make the colorful coral reef that is populated by a huge variety of exotic sea creatures, including manta rays, whale sharks and sea turtles. So far, some 2,000 different species of fish and more than 200 kinds of coral have been discovered in the Maldives. Equipped with my own snorkeling mask and fins, I slip into the warm seawater. The first thing I see underwater is an octopus peeking out from within its well-chosen coral cave. Its two big round eyes seem to be observing my every move very carefully. Before I went on this trip, I watched the Netflix documentary “My Octopus Teacher,” so I know by now that octopuses aren’t just highly intelligent creatures, but also that one should approach them carefully and with patience. There! I suddenly see he is extending two of his eight arms out of his hiding place. I have to focus hard so as not to lose sight of him. Octopuses are the chameleons of the sea and protect themselves from predators by changing their color and pattern in spectacular ways, according to their surroundings. No, he doesn’t seem to fully trust me. Whoops – and he’s gone, disappeared back

79

into his hiding place. I snorkel on. Only a few meters further I see a green moray eel glinting in another coral cave. Swarms of biggish, bright-yellow fish swim past me, alternating with some magnificent blue-green parrotfish. The noise as they nibble on the coral is so loud that I can hear the muffled sound before I spot them. Another funny detail is the clouds of sand billowing beneath them as they swim past me. “Those are bits of digested coral,” explains our dive instructor Mariana later. “It’s actually these fish that produce the fine sand.” The rainbow-colored sightings underwater make me so happy, and no stressful thoughts are able to reach me here. It’s quite incredible to think we only landed on The Nautilus two hours ago. The Baa Atoll’s western chain of islands is located only 120 kilometers from Malé, the Maldives’s main island – just a 30-minute flight away by seaplane. Baa Atoll is short for Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi and is what the locals call it. Covering an area of 1,127 square kilometers, it’s made up of 75 islands and was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve ten years ago – the only one in the Maldives. Since then, this area has become very popular with underwater enthusiasts, like me. Our luxury resort The Nautilus originally opened in 2019. Built on one of the smaller islands in the region – only 13 of which are inhabited – it covers an area of only 242 by 249 meters. Originally developed by Dr. Ibrahim Umar Maniku, the legendary Maldivian entrepreneur who, interestingly, was a trained anesthesiologist who earned his degree in Leipzig, Germany. He carefully designed The Nautilus experience with the aim of attracting ultra high-net-worth individuals looking for the ultimate private resort experience. His idea took off and The Nautilus quickly became a favorite among visitors from around the world. It’s been voted “Best Resort in the Indian Ocean” by the readers of travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller and also ranks third on the list of Best Resorts Worldwide. With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, this unusual luxury resort had to close for a period of five months. “It was a challenge for us, as it was for all the resorts in the Maldives,” says Mohamed Ashraf, general manager of The Nautilus and one of the few local hotel general managers who actually hails from the Maldives. “But we made good use of the time

Like a floral sculpture: a cluster of 11 ocean villas, each boasting an area of at least 450 square meters. Below right: a manta ray.

by further enhancing our guest areas and implementing a safe hygiene regime for the resort and our guests.” Today staff apply the highest levels of safety to protect their guests and The Nautilus has welcomed a surprising number of tourists who choose to stay longer than before the pandemic. Mohamed Ashraf: “Before, guests booked for a week, but today we see a trend that guests are wanting to stay longer with us – some guests even choose to make The Nautilus their home for several months.” Naturally, the limited size of the island

seems to help. While other islands in the Maldives accommodate hundreds of guests, The Nautilus consists of only 26 houses and residences. Almost half of these houses are built on stilts above the glittering Indian Ocean. The beach houses, which are no less luxuriously equipped, are nestled in the fine white sand. In addition to featuring a private bar, a private terrace and a pool, all the houses are so generously apportioned that guests tend to stay in their personal space most of the day. In fact, the houses and residences are so spacious that as a couple, you can participate in your own Zoom meeting without disturbing the other one at all. Before arrival, guests are required to submit written confirmation of a negative PCR test plus a government health declaration form. In addition to this, Emirates and Etihad Airways, which fly to Malé via Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively, both require a negative PCR test before they allow passengers to board their planes. On the island, you won’t find any of the 145 employees without a face mask. “We’ve donated a test lab on a neighboring island to our community. This helps our guests too, because the testing procedure for the return flight can be comfortably done in the guests’ house,” explains Mohamed Ashraf. This pragmatic approach to safety makes me feel well taken care of and I can turn my attention back to enjoying all the perks this resort has on offer. In the evening we enjoy the sunset at the Naiboli Poolside Bar, our favorite evening haunt over the next ten days. Individual lights in the pool seem to reflect the magnificent starry skies above us. With Sting’s “Fragile” playing softly in the background, we notice

some other guests for the first time since our arrival and greetings are exchanged from afar. Social distancing is a thing here too. For dinner, choosing a restaurant is a tough call. Either the ingenious creations of the young Indian chef Saravana at Zeytoun restaurant, which overlooks the lagoon. Or teppanyaki prepared at the Ocaso restaurant – a mix of Latin American-influenced Japanese cuisine. The unique thing here is: At The Nautilus there are no rules nor times and any meal and menu can be enjoyed whenever the guest pleases. After dinner, Aslam appears discreetly and suggests our activities for the following day. The private barbecue dinner on a sandbank is an absolute must for the next day! On our way there a pod of dolphins suddenly appears and accompanies the boat for several minutes, swimming alongside the boat and performing some impressive flip jumps. We are mesmerized. Our scuba trip with the resident marine biologist Mariana is another highlight. Unlike snorkling, where you observe the marine wildlife mostly from above, the scuba diving trip takes us 11 meters down into that underwater world and allows us to become one with nature. We see a spiny lobster, only recognizable by its feelers poking out of a cave, bright, colorful starfish and little orange clownfish flitting between the anemones. All of a sudden, Mariana nudges me and points toward a bigger cave. Assuming she wants to show me some more beautiful coral, I can hardly believe my eyes: There’s a sleeping, three-meter-long nurse shark just an arm’s length away! These nocturnal animals rest during the day and are only aggressive when provoked. Hopefully that’s true, I think, as we continue our dive. On the boat, heading back to the resort, I find that this close encounter has burnt itself into my memory. It will probably remain there as clear as a photograph forever. As it’s still early in the day and we’re hungry after our early morning dive, we help ourselves to the vast, delicious breakfast buffet laid out at the Thyme restaurant. The range of dishes reflects the variety of guests’ nationalities and includes sushi, sashimi, scrambled eggs, nachos, bagels and pancakes. For the afternoon, Aslam has booked each of us a 60-minute massage in the Solasta Spa. But beforehand, I complete my daily 5k run in the resort’s well-equipped gym – a huge bonus on this tiny island. On the last evening of our stay, with the breeze blowing gently, I admire the gleaming blue plankton floating in the waves that lap against the shore. And a deep feeling of gratitude washes over me for having been able to enjoy such an extraordinary vacation in these trying times. Would you like to know more?

W

hile her elegant sails reach high up into the sky, Rox Star’s shiny black hull dramatically glides its way through the waves. Home for this sporty sailing yacht is the open ocean. This is where she prevails over all the forces of nature and is the undeniable star on the horizon. On deck, the sturdy steel constructions – outstanding design features in themselves – cannot fail to impress whoever sets eyes on them. They give the yacht, built in 2015, a particularly striking countenance. The Bodrum Oguz Marin shipyard has created a genuine masterpiece with Rox Star. One that is always ready to set sail around the world. She is the second major design triumph for the Turkish shipbuilders, who already brought us the majestic yacht ‘Regina’ – which starred in the James Bond film ‘Skyfall’. Rox Star was first unveiled in all her beauty and to considerable acclaim at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show. Rox Star is quite unlike any other sailing yacht. This is patently clear the moment one sets eyes on her. The shape of her hull alone sets her apart from other sailboats in her 40-metre class. Her freeboard is set around half a metre lower than that of other more standard vessels, giving her a far sleeker look. The entire construction of the yacht, meticulously handcrafted throughout, is testimony to true passion and incredible attention to detail. The lamps, for example, are custom creations and even the floors have been specially cut. The Italian marble used in the bathrooms has been carefully crafted so that the grain flows continuously around all corners. The interior

on board whisks guests away into the world of rock 'n' roll. The award-winning Swiss design studio K-Architectes, based in Geneva, has given a unique signature look to the interior design, capturing the rock concept with immense creativity and confidence. While interior concepts on board other yachts are often limited to classic or modern, Rox Star somehow manages to evoke a unique and timeless feel that is playful above all else. Metallic accents, premium quality black leather, the finest wood panelling and portraits of rock legends on the walls – the elegant interiors create a cosy yet cool atmosphere. The large windows act like picture frames, affording incredible views out to the blue expanse of ocean beyond. Discreet skylights give an even greater sense of space by enhancing the natural light shining in – like at the cocktail bar in the lounge area. Rox Star offers modern and luxurious accommodation for up to ten guests in five spacious double cabins. She can also accommodate six crew members. The cabins each preside over an en suite bathroom and various high-tech entertainment devices. The master suite awaits with another highlight on top – a marble bathtub specially designed for the yacht, as well as a Turkish steam bath. Time on board can be enjoyed here in the utmost relaxation. Unusually for a sailing yacht, she even boasts her own beach club, located at the stern and benefitting from direct access to the sea. The range of water toys mean fun is guaranteed. Rox Star is much more than merely a yacht – she is a lifestyle.

F

or those who have always dreamed of a home by the sea, this villa on Majorca’s southwest coast could well be the moment of fulfilment. The incredible views stretch far beyond the Malgrats Islands, just off the mainland, where the sun disappears down into the sea in the evenings to a dramatic display of colours. In Nova Santa Ponsa, the romantic coastal scenery is combined with charming living environs. The proximity to Palma and the international airport, just 25 minutes away by car, makes this an absolutely prime address in the southwest corner of Majorca. Three prestigious golf courses are just three minutes away, adding still further to the appeal of this location. The marina known as Port Adriano is also within walking distance. It was the vision of Philippe Starck, the acclaimed French designer, back in 2012. And is renowned as one of the most state-of-the-art marinas anywhere in the Mediterranean. Designer boutiques and various bars and restaurants infuse yet more local Spanish charm to the area. The villa itself is located on Cap Adriano, an exclusive residential development on this rocky outcrop of coastline. It was built in 2018 to a design by the architect Guillermo Reynés of GRAS Arquitectos. Overall there are eight apartments, two penthouses and nine villas, all enjoying concierge services and round-theclock security. The rooftops of the villas have been planted with rosemary so that they blend in perfectly with the surroundings. The same is true of the stone design elements, some of

which feature inside the property and some around it. They were uncovered during the building of the villas and have a beautiful reddish hue typical for the region. The interiors span some 800 square metres, extending over three floors. Thanks to the fully glazed elevation looking out to sea, the views looking out across the expanse of blue can be enjoyed to the full from almost all rooms. Alongside the spacious living areas, the ground floor also presides over two guest suites. There are three bedrooms, two of which feature en suite bathrooms. The master bedroom awaits on the upper floor too, with its own living room and two further suites, also with en suite bathrooms. A private spa, home gym and wine cellar can be found on the lower ground level. An elevator connects all floors. The generous dimensions of the layout and an abundance of natural light create a bright and airy feel throughout. The Berlin architecture studio Sibel Huhn is the mastermind behind the interior design. Light hues and natural materials strike a harmonious balance between modern design and traditional influences. Meanwhile, outdoors, the extensive terraces are laid with beautiful quarry stonework, which gives the villa a distinctly Mediterranean feel. The 1,844 square metre plot benefits from a 16-metre pool and barbecue area, and makes a wonderful oasis in which to enjoy an exclusive al fresco lifestyle. At the bottom of the grounds is perhaps the biggest highlight of all: a small path leading along the rocks down to private access to the sea.

Continued from page 73

Is the artist deploying irony or a dramaturgical delaying effect? The threat to the planet from the seas of garbage isn’t obvious at first glance, but then all the more poignant for it. The objects collected by Mexican artist A lejandro Durán on the gorgeous beaches of his home country, on the other hand, do not require further digital processing. After all, the artist argues, these items were produced to be eye-catching and to induce impulse buying. The visual noise they create is their primary purpose. So he collects bright-yellow butter containers from Haiti, black shampoo bottles from South Korea and bluish-green toilet cleaners from Norway. He arranges the pieces of garbage by color and turns them into land-art installations, embedded in the rocks or glistening between tufts of beach grass on the C aribbean peninsula of Yucatán. Particularly galling: The source of the plastic waste from 58 countries that Durán catalogued was the Sian Ka’an region of Mexico, which, due to its natural beauty, is nothing less than a designated UNESCO world heritage site. The artist, who was born there, looks forward to the

day he will run out of materials, but isn’t holding out much hope. Tess Felix also finds the materials for her work just outside her front door. Eleven years ago, a hurricane deposited much of the trash. “Afterwards, you couldn’t see the beach for all the plastic garbage,” says the California artist. Since then, she has been collecting items that regularly get washed up in the San Francisco Bay area: screw tops, plastic tubes, nylon cords, lunch boxes. However, once collected, the artist strips the objects of any shred of their old purpose. She turns them into building blocks for her portraits of friends, pop stars, pinups and heroes of the environmental movement. Felix puts into practice the notion expounded by French philosopher Roland Barthes in his 1957 book “Mythologies”: Plastic isn’t just a material, but also “the very idea of its never-ending transformation.” Like turning a toothpaste tube into a work of art. Some may even find something approaching optimism in Tess F elix’s portraits: No material is so lowly that it cannot serve a higher purpose. Benjamin Von Wong doesn’t get involved in such semantic discussions. In his studio, the

Canadian photographic artist employs lighting and makeup to turn models into mermaids. He piles up plastic straws into enormous waves and arranges empty water bottles to create glistening oceans. The aesthetic of his photos is almost indistinguishable from that used in images advertising tropical paradises. And just like advertising, the images need to be approached with caution. They’re still made of plastic, after all. The viewer’s initial admiration will quickly give way to doubt: Wait a minute, aren’t these exactly the temptations that brought about our current predicament in the first place: extinction of species, polluted seas and climate change? If the purpose of art is to be seen and understood, Chris Herms-Glang has opened up new platforms for spreading her message: She directs and publishes videos online. Two years ago, the Hamburg-based artist performed at the Oslo opera house with her unruly wigs, an art form she says is here to stay, albeit in a statement laced with ambiguity: “I can guarantee they’ll be around for at least 300 years.” Would you like to know more?

The ISS of the sea

More than 65 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. But even the dark side of the moon has been studied more closely than the deepest reaches of the world’s oceans, only an estimated five percent of which have been explored. Aquanaut and marine ecologist Fabien Cousteau – grandson of the legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau – is hoping to change this. He and industrial designer Yves Béhar have developed the world’s biggest underwater research station. The 372-square-meter, modular structure will be located some 20 meters beneath the surface of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Curaçao. Named Proteus after an ancient Greek god of the sea, it will be the underwater equivalent of the International Space Station (ISS) – a place for government agencies, researchers and private companies to collaborate and pool their collective knowledge. In addition to a laboratory, the Proteus will provide living space for the international team of scientists whose research will include studies of marine pollution, ocean conservation and climate change. The circular, two-story structure will sit on stilts anchored to the seabed and will be powered by wind, solar and geothermal energy. Plans for the first underwater greenhouse are already being worked on. Construction is projected to take three years, but no start date has been set.

Fabien Cousteau spent 31 days in a pressure chamber 20 meters below the sea. Would you like to know more?

WORDS: CHRISTINA LIBUDA; PHOTOS: PROTEUS (2), CHRISTOPHER MARKS (1)

The Proteus is an international research station that will be built 20 meters below the surface of the sea to help advance the exploration of our oceans.
