From the outset, I was determined to build Engel & Völkers into a formidable brand. The first office in my hometown of Hamburg was just the beginning. Today Engel & Völkers has a well-established shop and franchise system and is represented in over 1,000 locations. In 2013, we formulated a strategy of establishing our own market centers and shops in selected metropolitan areas to help us expand more quickly in important regions. The Engel & Völkers Market Center in Barcelona was the first one. I am now very pleased to report that this year Engel & Völkers is experiencing significant growth in another of my favorite countries: Italy. We have been operating a Market Center in Rome since 2015, and in response to the steady growth in the capital’s international real estate business over the past few years, we have now added a second one. Real estate in the Eternal City is becoming an increasingly popular investment for our customers, particularly those from the U.S. We also strengthened our presence in Italy with a Market Center in Bologna, which has been operational since this past May. It is located in Palazzo De’ Toschi on Piazza Minghetti, the market square in the center of this historic university city.
I myself love the Italian way of life, the culture and the country’s great diversity. Its cities, Tuscany, the beautiful Costa Smeralda in Sardinia and the northern Italian lakes are all worth singling out. The unique charm of all of these places attracts prospective buyers from around the world. In fact, some 65% of real estate buyers are from abroad, and most are looking for a property to use as a second home. This confirms the trend we are also seeing in other vacation regions: the closer to water, the better.
A nother reason I like traveling to Italy is that I have many friends there. Last fall, I spent several days in Florence with my family, exploring the amazing sights together with a good friend, a real Florentine. One special place we visited was the famous Antinori winery, which is well worth the trip, not only to marvel at the architecture but also to learn about the Antinori family’s fascinating history. As a wine lover, I find the cover story for this issue very inspiring. I hope you enjoy reading it!
Sincerely,
Christian Völkers

Passion ...
is a word that is used often, but personalities who embody its meaning are actually rare. For this issue, we were lucky to turn a unique encounter into a cover feature. On a recent trip to Tuscany, I was very fortunate to meet the alluring Albiera Antinori, current president of world-famous Marchesi Antinori and the first woman ever to lead the prestigious, over 600-year-old wine brand. But like most women on top, the mother of two (who runs the company together with her sisters Allegra and Alessia), barely talks about herself or her achievements but instead radiates real passion for their family company and the wines they produce. When asked how they have managed to keep that very passion alive for 26 generations, Albiera Antinori replied smiling: “It’s such a wonderful product, you just can’t help but fall in love with it!” (read my full interview on page 30). Passionate dedication is the theme that runs through this entire issue. Meet Reese Witherspoon, whose production company Hello Sunshine concentrates on female storytelling and has grown into a phenomenally successful platform for actresses over 40. Dive into our Portfolio of some more impressive “leading ladies” and their unique careers in a variety of fields. And if you love adventure travel like I do, and have always dreamed of a trip to Patagonia, follow me on my Australis explorer cruise. The only company that offers this mind-blowing trip from Ushuaia in Argentina via Cape Horn to Punta Arenas in Chile. My report starts on page 58.
Enjoy your read!

Right: A snapshot to prove I was there! On my cruise through Patagonia we had planned to actually set foot on Cape Horn, but with winds blowing fiercely at 150km/h (more than 90 mph) we stayed on board the Ventus Australis.

Mattia Zoppellaro
For the cover feature of this issue, Mattia Zoppellaro traveled to the headquarters of Marchesi Antinori in Tuscany and took the beautiful images of Albiera Antinori and her sisters Allegra and Alessia exclusivly for GG. The three sisters are the very first women to take the helm in 26 generations. Zoppellaro lives in London and Milan. Many of his subjects are active in the music industry. His book “Dirty Dancing” documents the rave culture of the 1990s.
Silke Bender
From her desk in Paris, Silke Bender writes passionately about art, architecture and design, travel and food. The German native left Berlin for the French capital in 2011 and works as a freelancer, also for GG. She wrote the Portfolio for this issue (page 38).

COOL CITY 14
Your city visit
1 NOSTALGIC Transporting up to two million passengers a year, the red Polybahn is a Zurich landmark. 2 MFO PARK The site of the former Oerlikon engineering plant in the north of Zurich has been transformed into a leafy public park.
3 ARTWORK Paintings by Augusto Giacometti adorn the vaulted ceilings of the entrance to the Zurich City Police Station.
4 INSTITUTION The old-established Confiserie Sprüngli was one of the pioneers of the Swiss chocolate industry.
For years, Zurich has consistently been ranked one of the world’s most livable cities. In 2023, Switzerland’s largest city came sixth in the rankings of British weekly news magazine The Economist. There are good reasons for this, the most important of which is immediately obvious: its location on the shores of Lake Zurich with the magnificent Swiss Alps in the background. Affectionately known as “Züri” to its population of just under 450,000, Zurich is regarded by many as a “small global city.” As Switzerland’s largest financial and banking center, it is also one of the most expensive cities in the world. Zurich’s rise to its current economic powerhouse status began during the Industrial Revolution.
The cosmopolitan university and business city is divided into twelve districts. The most central of these covers the old town, which extends to both sides of the Limmat River. Our recommendation for a stroll through Zurich starts at the Rudolf Brun Bridge (named after the city’s first mayor) and then goes south along Heiristeg and Schipfe heading toward Lake Zurich. Schipfe is one of the oldest districts in the city. Boats used to dock here in the Middle Ages to unload their cargo of silk, gold and foodstuffs. This is a good place for a first pit stop – perhaps for an aperitif in the trendy Barchetta bar of the historic Hotel Storchen directly on the Limmat River, where it feels a bit like Venice.
Continue past the town hall bridge and Fraumünster Church and you’ll arrive at the Sechseläutenplatz, the town square where the annual Zurich Film Festival takes place at the end of September. If you carry on past the impressive Opera House on the lakeside, you’ll come to the Pavillon Le Corbusier, a unique architectural structure and the last building designed by the famous Swiss architect. Away from the old town, known as Niederdorf, with its alleys and magnificent guild houses, the elegance and unique surroundings of the city
are best appreciated from above. In just two minutes, the red Polybahn funicular whisks you from Central Square to Polyterrasse, where you can enjoy one of the best views over the entire city.
Creativity abounds in District 5, the former industrial quarter in the west of the city. Here, you’ll find Freitag Tower, the wellknown Zurich recycled bag label’s flagship store built from stacked shipping containers and rising 26 meters into the air. There are boutiques, galleries and delicatessens under the arches of the old railway viaduct. Visitors to Zurich shouldn’t miss the opportunity to dine at the Kronenhalle, a historic Swiss restaurant renowned for its traditional cuisine. While savoring your Geschnetzeltes with Rösti, take a moment to admire the wood-paneled walls adorned with works by Marc Chagall and Auguste Rodin.
The Confiserie Sprüngli is another Zurich institution and a popular place for breakfast. Buy the best quality chocolate or sample the famous macarons. For Italian food, head to the trendy Lupo restaurant; for Turkish, try the Gül. Round off your visit to Zurich with a negroni either in the Dante bar or on the roof terrace of the La Muña restaurant in the La Réserve Eden au Lac hotel on the shores of Lake Zurich. The hotel was recently refurbished by French architect and designer Philippe Starck.

VERSATILE There are two sides to many things, and Studio Somtum’s “Camels” cushion is no exception. It has a pink and brown camel pattern on the front and entwined serpents in blue and green on the back. Designer Gabriele Duenwald’s label stands for flamboyant prints, and somtum is a Thai word that means papaya salad.
PRECISION Rimadesio’s approach is a synthesis of interior design and furniture. The range comprises modular systems, custom sliding doors made of aluminum and glass, and sideboard collections, which can be viewed, for instance, at the Italian brand’s address on Madison Avenue in New York.
Is it for sitting on? The “Fels” stool from Berlinbased label Out is both. The form emerges from the wood gradually like a sculpture out of stone. The stool can also be used as a side table and comes in a variety of colors.
HOLISTIC Traditional craft meets individualized interiors: Interior design company Bernd Gruber has been developing tailored concepts and helping clients realize their architectural dreams – from initial idea to finished product – for over 30 years. High quality standards, professionalism and a deep passion for what they do round off the comprehensive approach.

Whisky revisited
Annabel Thomas wants to spearhead a transformative movement within the industry and imbue whisky with an elevated allure accessible to all.
You were a management consultant before founding Nc’nean. What prompted the switch? My family had been fostering the idea for a long time. Knowing that I was ready to leave my job in London, I finally sat down and wrote a business plan. It took two years to raise the money and another two years to build the distillery on my parents’ farm on the west coast of Scotland. We started distilling in 2017 and released our first whisky in 2020.
What do you, as a young company, intend to do differently than traditional corporations?
Everybody says: “We’re doing things the way they’ve always been done,” and I can understand wanting to uphold tradition. But none of the Scottish distilleries I visited were focused on sustainable production.
Your make certified organic whisky that’s produced with renewable, on-site energy. You also follow a zero-waste concept.
That’s always been important to me. Our goal is to pioneer sustainable production and make delicious and creative modern spirits.
Whisky is often considered a male drink, and there are not many women in the industry’s top leadership positions. What’s your take on that? The industry isn’t exactly doing much to change that stereotype. But in my view, a lot more women like whisky than people think. And although the industry appears to be male dominated, there are actually plenty of women involved. Our team is split exactly 50/50. I want to encourage more people to try whisky, regardless of gender.
How do you set yourself apart from your male counterparts?
Having as many women as men in the company brings diversity of thought and perspective, and maybe that allows us to think outside the box. Also, being female in a male dominated world makes us memorable.

The jewel of the French Riviera
Energy efficiency: Location’s new rival
“Location, location, location” has long been the real estate industry’s most important mantra. Even a quaint apartment in an old building in need of modernization will hold its value if it enjoys a prime location. In today’s environmentally conscious world, however, energy efficiency is emerging as a significant factor in property value retention.
Let’s be clear: Location – whether a property is in the heart of a bustling city or on the seafront – will always remain a crucial consideration in real estate, but the growing importance of sustainability is now being felt throughout the sector. The current transformation of the real estate market, triggered by inflation, higher interest rates and soaring energy costs, has led to a shift in the preferences of prospective buyers.
While these external influences are beyond the control of individual homeowners, enhancing the energy efficiency of their properties is one way they can increase their value. Prospective buyers are now paying closer attention to energy performance certificates because energy-efficient refurbishment not only saves costs in the long term but also makes for more environmentally friendly living.
The trend toward more climate-conscious homes is being driven not only by new energy legislation but also by the desire of homeowners to make a positive contribution to climate change while at the same time benefiting long-term from sustainable property ownership and more energy-efficient buildings.
As many as 80% of respondents to a 2023 survey on real estate trends commissioned by Engel & Völkers Finance stated that a good energy rating is very important or even decisive when purchasing a property; 62% said they placed a high priority on environmentally friendly living. Eight out of ten looked for good insulation, while 62% wanted solar energy capabilities and nearly 50% preferred properties equipped with heat pumps.
When we think of energy-efficient buildings, we usually think of heating. I certainly do, especially when I think about my home in Hamburg. Energy efficiency is also relevant in warmer regions, however, such as
in my second home in Mallorca. Here, houses make use of natural building materials like stone, clay and loam, which have good thermal properties and help regulate indoor temperatures naturally.
More and more European countries are offering low-interest loans to support energyefficient renovation as well as new builds that make use of renewable technologies to achieve high levels of energy efficiency. Nearly two-thirds of people think that financial assistance is essential for energy-efficient renovations or energy-saving construction. Financial assistance is available for a number of things: insulation, for example, window replacement and the installation of sustainable heating systems such as heat pumps, etc.
Property owners can also significantly reduce their energy consumption and contribute to sustainable living by using devices such as timers, thermostats and modern, energy-efficient household appliances.
The luxury real estate segment has a certain responsibility to lead the way in sustainability, as high-end properties are often seen as showcases for the latest trends. While luxury real estate customers have always expected exclusivity and first-class specification levels, we are now also noticing a growing demand for environmentally friendly living solutions – although it must be said that sustainability has long been associated with high standards of quality anyway.
And although sustainability credentials do increase the initial cost of a premium property, lower energy costs can help to improve long-term financial returns by increasing the value of the property.
In conclusion, energy efficiency has become a strong contender to location in the real estate market.

Frida Kahlo
Immediately recognized around the world, the woman with the trademark monobrow is considered an icon of 20th century art. Frida Kahlo was one of just a few woman painters to make a name for herself in a field dominated by men. A serious accident in her youth left her severely incapacitated and in and out of hospitals for the rest of her life. In over 50 self-portraits, the remarkable Mexican artist documented her reality and explored subjects such as sexuality and feminism. This large-format monograph includes 152 paintings as well as largely unknown photographs, journal entries and letters.
Zaha Hadid
Her extraordinary designs and the organic, futuristic shapes of her buildings set new standards in modern architecture. In 2004, Zaha Hadid became the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s top distinction. This was followed in 2006 by the prestigious Royal Gold Medal, an award given by the Royal Institute of British Architects on behalf of the British monarch. The same year, the Iraqi-British architect sadly died of a heart attack at the age of 65. But her outstanding achievements and her lasting influence have outlived her –one of the greatest architects of her time.

Taking Marchesi Antinori into the future: Three sisters are heading Italy’s biggest private winery.
Where tradition meets innovation: How Marchesi Antinori are preparing their wine company for the future, a Hollywood producer who turned the business around and many more inspiring women who have made a difference.

THE SUPER TUSCANS
Contemporary, elegant and sincere, that’s the Italian way. And it perfectly describes Albiera Antinori and her sisters Allegra and Alessia, who run Marchesi Antinori – the first women to lead the famous company in over 600 years. GG met the current president of one of Italy’s most renowned winemakers for an interview.

ALBIERA ANTINORI
The Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery is a striking building that attracts around 40,000 visitors each year.
“I love dynamic discussions between generations that think differently. I find them very exhilarating!”
ALBIERA ANTINORI
It might be a blessing in disguise that this year’s most admired wine brand is now run by women for the first time in its more than 600-year history. Albiera Antinori is at the helm, her sisters Allegra and Alessia share the position of vice president. Albiera Antinori, the president of the family enterprise, arrives for the interview somewhat preoccupied. With good reason. Her children, Verdiana and Vittorio, are getting married within only eight weeks of each other and the preparations are in full swing. Both children, their mother explains proudly, are already actively involved in the family enterprise.
GG: Signora Antinori, is the passion for wine in your family a genetic trait?
Albiera Antinori (laughs): Well, the wine business is such a wonderful world it’s almost impossible, luckily, not to fall in love with it. You feel a connection to the beautiful land and to the beautiful product. And what you can’t forget is that in a family-run company, there’s always something you can contribute. So if you’re more interested in finance than in agriculture, for example, you are also very welcome to participate. This goes for anything a family member is good at.
GG: With the support of your two sisters, you are responsible today for a traditional winemaking company that was run by men only for over 600 years. What happened?
AA: (laughs) My father had no choice but to pass the business on to us because he had three daughters and no sons. There was very little he could do about it. I’m the oldest and I started taking an interest in the company early, when I was only 18. So it’s not like there was a handover on a certain date, it was more of an organic process and I just went with the flow. Today we’ve even got three generations actively involved, all at the same time. It’s a good thing because it gives my children the chance to learn from their grandfather.
Editor’s note : Albiera Antinori’s father Piero is currently 85 and regarded as something of a living legend by wine experts. The business was founded by Giovanni di Piero Antinori in 1385, but it was Piero Antinori’s entrepreneurial boldness that made the company famous worldwide. Back in the 1970s, he combined grapes in what was considered a highly unusual way to develop legendary wines such as Tignanello or Solaia – the so-called Super Tuscans. By doing so, he revolutionized winemaking in Italy and established the reputation of the Antinori name. Today Marchesi Antinori cultivates wine in many different renowned wine regions and boasts annual sales of €240 million.
GG: By producing the first Super Tuscans, your father helped the company achieve its international breakthrough. How do you reflect on the impact he had on the company?
AA: It was a kind of turning point. When my father returned from his travels in the late 1960s, he more or less shaped the family destiny. He had originally set off to learn about winemaking in other parts of the world and came back with the understanding that it was important to grow foreign varieties and mix these with local ones to produce new and exciting wines. This was both a moment of great innovation and of maintaining tradition, because our Chianti Classico continued to be made from the local variety only. The new wine, aged in smaller barrels and only for 14-16 months rather than two years, became a table wine rather than an appellation. It was given the name of the winery, not that of the family, because it did not abide by the rules of Chianti Classico. The birth of the Super Tuscan! It was suddenly clear that here in Italy, we could produce wines of international quality. This set a new movement in progress and other Super Tuscan wines started being produced around us. My father’s goal was always to make the best wine the land could produce, and the

e’re sitting outside the fully booked Cantinetta Antinori restaurant at the family’s headquarter in Florence. “Practically in my parents’ garden,” says Albiera Antinori and smiles at the thought that until recently, no one in her family would have even dreamed of opening the historic courtyard of Palazzo Antinori, the family residence since 1506 in which her parents still live today. But the 26th generation of the world-famous winemaking family has to come up with creative ideas and open its doors to the public if it wants to keep the company strong and positioned for the future.

quality of the wines continued to develop over the following 40 to 50 years.
GG: You showed similar entrepreneurial boldness when you commissioned the architecture firm Archea in the early 2000s to build the Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery about 40 minutes outside of Florence. It’s a huge, spectacular, modern wine cellar that looks like it was built right into the ground. The construction represents a marked contrast to the traditional vineyard architecture in Italy. When I saw the impressive building, which also contains a museum, my first thought was: The Antinori family is opening up and inviting the world to come and take a look inside.
AA: At the beginning of the 2000s that sort of thing was already a way of introducing the product to the customer elsewhere, in Napa Valley, for instance, but it was not so common in Italy. The Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery is a unique place where visitors come to find out how to make wine. We were under pressure from our customers back then. They had started showing more and more interest in learning how we made our wine. They didn’t just want to visit us, but to understand and educate themselves about the process.
GG: When we visited the Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery together, you told me that in the beginning, people were quite critical of what you were doing and only a few believed in your vision and supported the project. Today you’re very much admired for your foresight. AA. We needed a big building, but none of the more traditional, historic buildings around were suitable. None had the space to house our 160 workers every day, either. Or the right space in which to welcome 40,000 visitors a year. And the last thing I wanted was to create a replica of a 14th-century building, so my only option was to build something new and contemporary. I wanted to make sure it was efficient but also create a timeless aesthetic. After all, the building is meant to survive into the coming decades and suitably represent the Antinori brand going forward.
GG. In the museum, there’s an oversized book on prominent display. It’s open to a page containing the will and testament of your ancestors, written in large letters, which says that the Antinori estate may only be inherited by a male descendant. AA. (smiles) Yes, that’s how it was back then, but luckily, times are slowly, slowly changing. A lot has happened in the last 40 years. Look at the composition of company boards, there are even female executives of stock market corporations. We now have a law in Italy that says companies have to employ a certain percentage of women. I belong to a kind of transition-
al generation that wasn’t given a university education or required to prepare myself for a job in any other way. My daughter, who is now 29, was trained much more rigorously. She’s tough and career-oriented, just like her brother. But if you ask me, men in Italy should support women more if they want to have children together: Only when they understand that they have to share household chores 50/50 will we have true equality, in my opinion.
GG: Something that’s already evident in the U.S. AA: But not here, nor in other Latin countries.
GG: Is this development, in which women are catching up, also noticeable among your customers? Do just as many women as men now show an interest in good wine? I’ve never yet met a woman who invited me for dinner and then took me into her wine cellar and pulled out her most expensive bottle of exquisite wine to show me … AA: (laughs) That’s true! But we’ve certainly noticed an increase in the number of women who are knowledgeable about wine. They’re often the ones who buy wine for the family, primarily whites and rosés.
GG: Can you recall any moments in your life when you felt that being a woman in this business was trickier than you thought? When people were surprised not to be dealing with a man?
AA: Not really. There was only one time when I went to buy grapes for the company from an elderly partner with more traditional views. He was a bit suspicious about signing the contract with me, as I was still quite young at the time. But that’s how it goes: You lose some, you gain some.
GG: These days, at family get-togethers, when all three Antinori generations are gathered at the table, what does that look like? Do traditional ways collide with more radical, new ideas of how to lead the company?
AA: Absolutely! But I love dynamic discussions, I find them very exhilarating. Just recently, my father and my son were discussing the advantages and disadvantages of introducing a four-day work week. I listened to both carefully and realized each one had a point! My father has actually retired from day-to-day activities in the business, but he still comes into the office every day. I think that’s great, and I’m very happy that he does so, because it gives the company a lot of stability.
GG: What motivates you personally – the responsibility of running the company well and handing it over to the next generation in good shape, or realizing your own ideas and visions?
AA: I would say a combination of both.

No, these fair damsels aren’t waiting to be swept off their feet by a prince, they’re the Clarins sisters and cousins Virginie, Jenna, Prisca and Claire (from left to right), who want to shape the future of the French cosmetics brand just as their grandfather, Jacques, the company founder, had always wished for the daughters of his two sons. Virginie Courtin is general director, cousin Prisca chairs the supervisory board and Jenna is brand ambassador. Success is on their side: Last year, Clarins achieved sales of €1.75 billion, up 15% over the previous year. The Courtin-Clarins rank 17th on the list of the wealthiest families in France, and these four heiresses intend to preserve and increase that wealth rather than selling the company.

When it comes to designing spaces around important works of art, Annabelle Selldorf of Selldorf Architects is the number one person to contact. The German-born architect has built homes for well-known collectors and gallerists such as Larry Gagosian and redesigned museums such as the Neue Galerie New York in Manhattan. Perhaps it’s her modest, intuitive and elegant approach combined with an expert understanding of exquisite minimalism that makes her so sought-after in the art world, still a predominantly male domain. Zaha Hadid, the first woman to win the prestigious Pritzker Prize for architecture in 2004, regretfully commented shortly before her death in 2016 that woman architects would always have it harder because they could never be part of the brotherhood.

Time magazine chose her this year as one of 12 Women of the Year who were trying to make the world a more equitable place. The U.S. soccer star, who won two World Cups and Olympic gold, is considered one of the most influential athletes in the world. Unlike her male counterparts, the openly queer winger always wears her politics on her sleeve: Her activism, for instance, contributed to a commitment last year by U.S. soccer to provide equal pay for men’s and women’s national teams going forward. In an interview four years ago she said: “I want to shout: ‘Cristiano, Lionel, Zlatan, help me!,” complaining that male soccer stars don’t engage in anything despite the problems plaguing men’s soccer. “Who will erase Messi or Ronaldo from world football history for a statement against racism or sexism?” she said, wondering what they had to lose. This season is Rapinoe’s last as she will officially end her soccer career in October.

LORENZA LUTI
Is she the future of Kartell? For 18 years, Lorenza Luti has been marketing director of the legendary Italian brand known for its pioneering plastic furniture. Her younger brother Federico is head of sales. Claudio Luti, the family patriarch, is still firmly in the saddle at 77, but the chances that Lorenza will eventually take the reins as opposed to her brother, are considerable. Lorenza, granddaughter of the company founder, is firmly committed to sustainability. Last year, at the Milan Furniture Fair, she exhibited a chair made of recycled espresso capsules. The fact that many of the brand’s iconic pieces are now also made of bioplastic is equally her doing. Women are just as sought-after by design companies as men are these days, she say, adding: “Maria Porro, Giulia Molteni, Susanna Minotti – we’re all part of a generation for whom gender no longer plays a role.”

CHEF PAM
The great cooking paradox: Although women are generally the ones who do the cooking in households around the world, female Michelin-starred chefs are as rare as white truffles. Thai-Chinese chef Pichaya Soontornyanakij (Chef Pam) is currently breaking every record there is. At age 33, she was the youngest and only female chef to earn the Opening of the Year Award and a Michelin star within only 12 months for Potong, her Bangkok restaurant. Tables in the former family apothecary in the city’s Chinatown are now a top foodie address. Her cooking principle sounds somewhat less highfalutin than that of some of her male counterparts: “I cook to put a smile on people’s faces. I serve happiness.” Female chefs head only 6% of the roughly 2,300 restaurants boasting a single Michelin star. And among the world’s 139 three-star restaurants, only five chefs are women.

Flying home to Mars or Venus?
No, this U.S. astronaut will likely be the first woman to fly to the moon. In November 2024, the Artemis II will be the first NASA mission to the moon since 1972. The mission, which is intended to orbit the moon, will prepare the way for the lunar landing of the Artemis III a year later. Christina Hammock Koch already holds the women’s record for 328 days in space. When the physicist and electrical engineer joined NASA’s astronaut program at age 34 she fulfilled a childhood dream. Her bedroom, while growing up, was plastered with boy band posters and posters of space. She’s certain that all women have to do is break the sound barrier of role stereotypes: “When pure performance is the criteria, I’ve noticed women naturally excel.”

In the driver’s seat at General Motors since 2014, Mary Barra is the first female CEO of one of the world’s biggest automakers. The engineer, daughter of a mechanic, worked her way up to the top at GM over more than 40 years. A few things she says she’s learned: “Time is not your friend. The importance of speed cannot be underestimated, and not making a decision is also a decision.” Her advice for women in particular: “Speak up in meetings, don’t let men interrupt you and don’t say sorry for things you don’t need to be sorry for.” Under her leadership, GM has invested billions in electric vehicles and self-driving cars. The company also tops the league with regard to gender equality and equal pay. But so far, these achievements have failed to impress the rest of the industry and Barra remains a solitary beacon in this otherwise all-male club.

HELLO, SUNSHINE!
For decades, 40 was the age when an invisible ceiling suddenly appeared for women in Hollywood. Reese Witherspoon decided to fight back. She changed the game by finding exciting female authors and putting their heroines on streaming platforms. Her production company is valued at $900 million today – a force to be reckoned with.

Oscar winner, Stanford student, businesswoman, mother of three. That’s power woman Reese Witherspoon.
Reese Witherspoon had a dual role in the award-winning, dark HBO series “Big Little Lies”: actress and producer.
Photo above: with co-stars Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman. All three play mothers whose children attend the same primary school in a small town in California – an idyll where rape, murder and blackmail lurk in the background.
It was just a brief question, but one that would end up changing her life: “What do we do next?” popped up in practically every script she was offered. It was unfailingly uttered by a woman, gazing helplessly at a man. What all these scripts had in common was that they were written by men. Reese Witherspoon met with studio bosses: “Which female leads have you got lined up?” “None at the moment,” was always the reply.
She realized then that she had to do something – produce the films that she wanted to act in herself. Witherspoon recounted this lightbulb moment in her acceptance speech at the 2015 Glamour Women of the Year Awards. Sitting in the audience was her mother, who had given her an invaluable piece of advice: If nobody else changes something then do it yourself. “I don’t believe that ambition is a bad word,” Witherspoon added. And because she has Southern charm in spades, it doesn’t sound like an all-out declaration of war. Beneath the polished, cheerleader demeanor, Witherspoon is a very savvy businesswomen and outspoken activist.
The 47-year-old has changed Hollywood like few women before her. She has opened up a stage for complex and nuanced female characters, shining a spotlight on women who are more than familiar with subtleties and the rocky depths of emotions, who acknowledge hate and greed as well as the more traditional loving and nurturing instincts. These are women who have a hidden side. A few years ago, she told Vogue: “I was sick of seeing scripts where there was one female role, badly written, and yet every actress in town wanted the part because there was nothing else.”
She founded her first production company in 2012, which four years later became the media enterprise Hello Sunshine, now one of Hollywood’s most prestigious companies and a powerhouse that produces prize-winning films and series that are equally acclaimed by critics and audiences. The company’s hits include “Big Little Lies” on HBO, “Little Fires Everywhere” on Hulu, and “The Morning Show” on HBO. The latter stars Jennifer Aniston and Witherspoon, and is a masterfully acted and written commentary on #MeToo. Hello Sunshine’s mission is unmistakably feminist; in fact, click on the company website and you are welcomed with the claim: “Changing the narrative for women.”
Reese Witherspoon grew up in Nashville,
Tennessee, where she enjoyed a sheltered childhood. She was given her first film role at the age of 14, and her breakthrough came in 2001, when she was cast in “Legally Blonde” as a law student with a deep attachment to pink. Five years later she won an Oscar for playing June Carter Cash in “Walk the Line.” The trophy didn’t bring her much luck; instead, her career stalled. Witherspoon was trapped in a fluffy, but very narrow niche: America’s eternally cheerful sweetheart.
Her reinvention came in 2014, the year she produced two films: the psych thriller “Gone Girl” and “Wild,” both of which scooped Academy Award nominations in the category “Best Actress.” Witherspoon played the lead role in “Wild” – introducing moviegoers to a character at the opposite end of the sweetheart spectrum: a tough woman who seeks to overcome trauma and find redemption by hiking solo 1,100 miles across deserts and mountain ranges. A former heroin addict who doesn’t balk at ripping out her own bloody toenail. The male hikers she meets along the way are incidental characters, good at most for fast sex. The role earned her nominations for an Oscar and a Golden Globe. “Wild,” like nearly all films Witherspoon has produced, is based on a book, to which she secured the film rights even before it was published. Having studied English literature at Stanford University, Witherspoon has a fine instinct for a great story. One ray of Hello Sunshine is Reese’s Book Club, which has 2.6 million followers on Instagram. Every month, Witherspoon recommends a book, always one where a woman is the protagonist. Several dozens of her book choices have gone on to become New York Times bestsellers.
In the space of a few years, Reese Witherspoon built a media empire and a community, harnessing the power of all available channels: podcasts, YouTube, Instagram. People soon became aware of the goldmine she had built, and in 2021 she sold a majority share in her company – for the jaw-dropping sum of $900 million in a deal that made her the richest actress in the world. Despite being very much in the public eye, Reese Witherspoon has managed to shield her private life and her three children from media prying; she divorced twice, both times without making any ripples. Only when the Harvey Weinstein scandal surfaced did she break her silence. When Hollywood’s formerly most powerful man was convicted of rape, she made a personal statement, excoriating the “culture of silence.” For the first time, she revealed that she had also been abused by a film director: She was 16 at the time. Both her agent and the producer told her to remain silent.

FERDINAND MAGELLAN
One of the highlights of this trip: visiting the Pia Glacier that rises a breathtaking 100 meters into the air and is one of the biggest in South America.
Gazing out of the giant panorama window in our double cabin, the sea looks deceptively calm, with only some white-capped ripples indicating that things could change. I decide to get up and quickly put on three layers of clothes, pull on the oilskins I brought with me from home and head over to the lounge of our explorer ship. Its 100 cabins are almost fully booked. A cup of coffee in hand, I join the other early risers as we eagerly observe how the weather develops the closer we get to Cape Horn. Provided it remains calm, we will be able to go ashore and pay a visit to the only family that lives in total isolation on this remote rocky promontory and keeps the lighthouse. But with every nautical mile we draw closer, the foamy caps on the waves swell, and the wind picks up speed, becoming a lashing gale. The spray drifts across the sea like a gray veil of fog.
Finally, after keeping our fingers crossed for the past few hours, at 7 a.m. an announcement crackles through the speakers: “Unfortunately, due to wind force 14 (Editor’s note: the equivalent of around 150 km/h. The highest winds recorded here are 185 km/h) we will not be able to go ashore.”
The waves are too high and rough to launch the Zodiac inflatables. Instead, we gather on deck and take photos of the dramatic scenery. It takes all my strength to cling to the railing, while around me the wind snatches hats off the heads of other passengers.
In the distance on land, we can see the modern memorial dedicated to the many sailors who lost their lives in the treacherous waters around Cape Horn: It depicts an albatross, in reference to the legend that the men who drowned here were later transformed into birds. Finally our ship turns around and heads for the Beagle Channel.
Hungry and exhausted from battling the strong winds, we gratefully enter the Patagonia Dining Hall at 8 a.m. for a well-deserved breakfast. A few hours later, we reach
the tranquil Wulaia Bay, which lies slightly to the north. Once, this area was home to the indigenous Yahgan people, nomads who traveled in canoes made of birch trunks, hunting seals and fish. As they always took fire with them, the group of islands was named Tierra del Fuego – the land of fire. In the late 19th century, the Yahgan were decimated by the western conquerors and the infectious diseases they brought with them.
In the afternoon, we leave the ship for the first time and hike more than 10,000 steps and 17 stories (according to my iPhone) up into the wildly beautiful mountains and the Magellan Forest, which is a habitat for plants such as lengas and coigües (Southern beech trees), canelo (Winter’s bark) and native ferns. From the viewpoint on top, we overlook the entire bay and, in the distance, can even see whales blowing their fountains into the air. Back on board, we sit on deck and admire the incredible spectacle until the sun sets.
After an excellent dinner (especially if you love fish) we decide to have an early night –which, as we are securely anchored, is calm and also quite short. At 6 the next morning, the Ventus Australis sets off towards the northwestern arm of the Beagle Channel where the Pia Glacier sits in the Darwin Mountains. We wake up at a prime spot with the incredible sight of one of the largest glaciers in South America right in front of our window – a stunning 100-meter-tall mountain of ice.
Excited, we pull on our waterproof gear, again with a lifejacket on top, and gather at the rear of the ship, where Zodiacs are waiting to whisk us over to the shore of the glacier for a walk to the top. The closer we get, the more we feel the intense chill of these massive amounts of ice. From time to time, we hear a tremendous groaning and grinding even as small pieces of ice shear off.
We learn that the glaciers move roughly 4050 meters every month and that they shine in a range of different colors, depending on how the light catches them and the composition of the ice. After stopping off and visting the Marinelli and Aguila glaciers, and shortly before arriving at the harbor of Punta Arenas in Chile, we pay a last visit to the uninhabited tiny island of Magdalena in the Straits of Magellan. It was charted for the first time around 1520 by Ferdinand Magellan on his voyage to circumnavigate the world and is now known for its vast population of Magellanic penguins that lives here. During our walk, we admire the droll inhabitants up close, who share the island with their biggest archenemies, the skua birds.

It’s 4 in the morning as I wake up excited with anticipation. Last night, we left the port of Ushuaia, the southernmost city in Argentina, on the Ventus Australis. In just a few hours we will reach the legendary Cape Horn. Until the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, 10,000 mariners lost their lives on the dangerous route around infamous Hornos island, which was the most important trading route back then.

The older a company is, the greater responsibility you have in leading and taking good care of what previous generations have passed on to you. You also have to be aware that in the wine business, patience and time are crucial. It always amazes me when people invest in wine and then want their money back ten years later – along with the glory. This business doesn’t work that way!
GG: Your company is not only one of the oldest but also one of the main winemakers in Italy. Every year, you sell 22 million bottles worldwide. In which countries are you most successful?
AA. Our biggest market is Italy, followed by the U.S., Germany and then the rest of Europe, like Switzerland, Austria and the U.K. Before the war, we also sold a lot of wine in Russia and Ukraine. For some crazy reason, business with China is still in its infancy and progressing very slowly.
GG: Why is that?
AA. Unlike the Koreans, who feel a deep
connection to us Italians, who love our food and also our wine, the Chinese are not so open to things Italian. The best way to enjoy Italian wine is with Italian food, so for us, Italian restaurants are the ideal vehicle for introducing people to our wines. That’s one of the reasons we have opened Cantinetta Antinori restaurants from Florence to Zurich to Monte Carlo, Vienna and Moscow.
GG: This is where your sister Allegra comes in, she’s responsible for the restaurants. Your sister Alessia, on the other hand, manages everything connected with art. What’s it like, working so closely with your sisters? Is it always harmonious?
AA: We obviously don’t always share the same opinions, but our ultimate focus is always the company that we’re running together. Plus, we’re women. That means when it comes to making decisions, nobody’s ego is getting in the way, as can often be the case with men.
GG: What are your biggest challenges right now?
AA: We’re currently observing a growing trend that seems to have started in northern Europe. It makes us think we’re entering a new Prohibition period, one in which people are so health conscious they’ve gone anti-alcohol. We have to try to react to this phenomenon in the same way as to climate change, which is causing less rainfall in our vineyards and more periods of extreme heat. There will always be new challenges, and it’s our job to prepare the next generation to handle them as they come. This means training them well so that they’re happy and prepared to take over when the time is ripe. So we ask every family member who wants to join the company to earn a master’s degree and gain work experience elsewhere before coming to work for us. If we didn’t do this, all my father’s efforts and everything my sisters and I are doing would be in vain.
GG: So Marchesi Antinori will most definitely remain in the family in the years to come?
AA: Yes, that’s how we’ve planned it. In 2012 we established a trust that will remain in place for the next 90 years. That’s how we’ve ensured that the company won’t be broken up or sold during this period.
GG: Is aging regarded as a good thing in this business – as in the case of your wine?
AA: (laughs) Absolutely! It certainly helped me to become more experienced. But our business partners know that my family has been making wine for a very long time, and that our operations are entirely transparent. We don’t put on any airs and graces. Our motto truly is: What you see is what you get.

The oak-panelled library marks a glorious juxtaposition: “What we set out to do was to create a much smaller, necessarily cosy environment to counter the larger spaces downstairs.” By contrast, one of the guest bedrooms shouts bold minimalism.

This duo has a masterful eye for style and a love of detail. She made her name in the international fashion world, while he is a world-renowned industrial designer. Charlotte Stockdale and her husband Marc Newson have created a unique home for themselves in the heart of London. With their very own designs and no qualms about colour, this dwelling is a testament to the power of design –to change our moods and enhance the everyday.
Constructed in 1894, 8 Francis Street in central London was originally a sorting office for the Royal Mail before it was purchased by the developer Alessandro Crivelli. Initially envisaged with 122 flats, in the end, a more sympathetic design of just nine incredible apartments was decided on, as well as commercial space that would become the offices of the auctioneer and art dealer Simon de Pury, the fashion designer Tom Ford, and Marc Newson. One of these apartments was to be the home of the Australian designer and his wife Charlotte.
Stockdale has been an editor at Vogue and i-D, working closely with a host of fashion royalty throughout her career. Together with Katie Lyall she founded the label Chaos and the magazine “Chaos SixtyNine”. Newson is renowned as an era-defining designer, famously working with the likes of Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Nike, and as part of the design team behind the Apple Watch. His Lockheed Lounge seat set the record for the highest price achieved at auction by a living designer. It was Newson who became aware of the property being available, from Crivelli. “I was staggered to find there were some cavernous spaces still available in this location, which I thought were impossible to find”.
The near 4,500 sqft, four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment is entered on the second of just three floors. First walking into the newly purchased space, the couple were confronted by “grey, lots of grey and red brick”. But it was not destined to become a classic loft apartment: “On the one hand, we loved the volume that you get with a typical New York style loft,
but we didn’t like the sterility of loft spaces. We didn’t want something that was simple, square and boxy, made with glass and steel. We wanted not only to preserve the inherent charm of this Victorian-era building, but to enhance it, too.”
The building was completed within 18 months. The beating heart of this home is an 80 ft kitchen and living space which can be divided by a sliding, lacquered panel and comes with seventeen foot ceilings. It is ideal for entertaining: “We’ve had sit down dinners for 40 people several times and stand up parties for over 80 people,” they reveal. One side of the living space is clad entirely in rounded river rocks. “Sourcing the rocks was the biggest challenge. We had them shipped over from Canada in crates, cut them in half and attached them to the wall like a giant jigsaw.”
As you would expect from a couple with such incredible fashion and design pedigree, the property is replete with original fixtures, fittings and pieces by Newson that are admired by design aficionados worldwide: sculptural Diode lamps, the low Voronoi shelf, two Micarta chairs, and the incredible Black Hole Table. The kitchen island, including the sink, is a remarkable, single piece of elliptical, Carrara marble sourced from a factory in Italy. Newson worked with Smeg to design the oven and hob that is in a green tone to match the palette of the cabinets.
Departing the first floor, it is a glorious juxtaposition to find yourself entering into the olde world of the cosy oak-panelled library. In the principal bedroom, green wallpaper seems to envelop the entire space. “We wanted to bring some warmth and character to the room, so I chose the colour, Marc designed the wallpaper and I had matching curtains made. It’s a calming and tranquil room,” Stockdale says. You are welcomed here by another highlight of the apartment: the bathroom, which is adorned almost entirely in an exotic marble called “Striato Olimpico”. “It was a huge effort to create, but as a bathroom it is essentially a wet area, so it’s also incredibly practical,” Newson adds.
With its curve and flow, quirky, with a sense of humour and warmth, this property represents a singularity as a design space, but also a Newson/Stockdale collaboration. “It’s been an incredibly collaborative project. It’s the only one that is on the market and maybe the only one that ever will be.”

Soaring achievement
A superlative construction is going up in Shenzhen. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Tower C continues the late star architect’s formidable legacy.
The futuristic building’s twin towers will rise 400 meters into the sky. Tower C, as the complex is called, will be the tallest building in Shenzhen, China’s third-largest city. The firm founded by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, who died in March 2016, designed the “vertical city” for the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base – a new business and financial center that will accomodate 300,000 employees. The mega-project is a true tribute to Hadid.
Fully in line with the late architect’s ambition to create spaces that merge with their surroundings, the double towers have been designed to extend the nearby park and create new public spaces. Cultivated garden terraces at the foot of Tower C beckon visitors inside the building, which will feature a mix of office, gastronomy and retail space as well as a hotel, a convention center and cultural facilities.
The glass, steel and concrete structures Zaha Hadid envisioned have greatly influenced the architecture of the 21st century. Today, the architecture firm she founded in 1980 is one of the world’s most successful. Since her death, her long-standing business partner Patrik Schumacher has been leading the firm. Tower C, which is scheduled for completion in 2027, is one of several projects that Zaha Hadid Architects is developing in China.
