e are living through an unexpected and exceptional period that has profoundly changed our way of life. Human beings are social by nature, and the social distancing that the coronavirus has imposed is challenging for all. But it also offers us a wonderful opportunity to increase our knowledge and develop our capacities. The worldwide crisis, still unthinkable two months ago, has opened a new door. Stepping through it, we will emerge transformed and stronger, in my view. Every member of the Engel & Völkers family has already shown this to be true, demonstrating solidarity and great responsibility in the face of diffic lties f o

fi st ste , even before things turned serious, was to enable people to work from home so as to protect them and their families. A few days later, our 70 shops closed, but only to the outside world. The heart of Engel & Völkers in Spain is beating as strongly as before as we continue our work in the virtual world with passion and devotion. It's the same heart you see below the "stay home" motto in most of the videos created by our marketing teams in Madrid, Valencia and the rest of Spain. Highly motivated, with enthusiasm and determination, we overcame the odds, and I must say, I am deeply impressed by the solidarity I witnessed, and the willingness to adapt. Thanks to the technology that made it possible to move online, we have demonstrated more clearly than ever our strength as a family and our pioneering role in the property sector. The demand for real estate has shifted, not dried up, and we have adapted our activities accordingly. The next six months will certainly be turbulent, but there is much cause for optimism. rom Madrid, Zurich and London to as far afield as North and South America, design enthusiasts are waxing lyrical about the interior creations of a remarkable individual: Luis Bustamante. Having studied in Madrid and Barcelona for degrees in both Art and Interior Design, the Madrid-born maestro now devotes his time to fulfilling the domestic dreams of discerning homeowners.

is trademark style is the fusion of the present and the past, otherwise known as contemporary and classical architectural design. “Interiors are always centred around their inhabitants,” says the artist. “People without children, for instance, tend to lead home lifestyles where modernism and abstraction are more evident. For me personally, simplicity and cosiness are the key ingredients when it comes to creating a home.” The residents of this exquisite Majorcan mansion

had a very particular brief: they wanted a second family home that exuded an air of vitality, euphoria and joyfulness – reflecting the joy that children bring to life. Embedded amid fabulous countryside on the Balearic island of Majorca, this stunning residence sits above the idyllic village of Esporles perched high on the southwest foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains. Completed in 2007, it stands as glorious testimony to the work of a strong team. “As well as drawing from the ideas of the imaginative homeowner and working with the highly regarded Spanish landscape architect Luis González Camino, I was inspired by the work of the architect who created the property, the Majorcan Antonio Obrador. He has an uncanny ability to create emotional spaces with such sensibility that are flooded both with light and with life. This spurred me on in my own creative endeavours.” The abundance of large windows and adjacent terraces, some covered and all facing in different directions, conjures up a vivid interconnection with the nature outdoors, allowing the surroundings to become a part of the interior. Impressively sized, with a sprawling land plot of some 160,000 sqm and a

Marigolds, hibiscus, jacarandas and towering palms dominate the scene in summer, while between January and March a truly splendid white canopy of almond descends upon the landscape. The fig and olive trees that adorn the expansive mountain terraces and sweeping pine forests also exude a charm all of their own here. Majorcans refer so affectionately to their homeland as the “island of many faces” with good reason. It is in homage to the sheer diversity of the countryside, which cannot fail to capture visitors’ imagination. “The homeowner wanted to create a homely and natural atmosphere. They were keen to adopt a colourful, luminous design that would coalesce effectively with the kaleidoscopic natural surroundings of the island,” Bustamante recalls. While the overall quaintness of the rural architectural design sees traditional detailing such as the Mediterranean window shutters, tiled roof and flagstone paths so typical for Majorca, a sense of exclusivity comes to life thanks to the subtle, warm pastel tones of the walls, the sumptuous fabrics, antique furniture and lavish decorations. Exposed ceiling beams, clay floor tiles and teak woodwork blend in beautifully here with the floral facets of Majorca’s countryside that Luis Bustamante was so inspired to incorporate into the interior. The ornamentation on the walls and ceilings invokes unmistakable associations with the lush surrounding flora, emanating joy and positivity within. The interior designer also drew on Moroccan and French influences. Examples here include the carefully selected furniture pieces imported from France, the Provençal-style kitchen, or the large chillout area featuring distinctly Moroccan styles. This magnificent mansion estate forms the perfect combination of emotional and intelligent architecture. It is a place where sunlight and colour interact playfully with one another, and where a sublime exclusivity, grandeur and quality of life are truly second to none. Painstakingly restored in 2007, three antique Majorcan stone houses form a U-shape here set around the impressively sized patio, where superb southwest-facing views can be enjoyed looking out over the valley of Esporles. But there are not just views to be enjoyed: Spoilt by glorious sunshine, the village is a vibrant hub where people take to the streets for a relaxing stroll at all times of the day, the whole year round.
Indeed, anyone setting foot in Esporles cannot help but fall in love with this special place. In the middle of this mountain idyll lies the quaint Plaza España, with its canopy of planetrees, where one could be forgiven for thinking that time had stood still – and this just a mere 14 kilometres from the island’s capital Palma. A paved ramp and pathway lead to the garden lounge featuring a bar area with its own stereo and telecommunication system, as well as a beautiful infinity pool fitted with a fully automated maintenance system. Each of the houses set in the park grounds comprises exclusive living areas with open fireplaces, opulent bedrooms in traditional island designs, bathrooms with bush-hammered Majorcan stone, built-in cupboards and, last but not least, spectacular outlooks sweeping across the surrounding countryside from many rooms.
