WELCOME

F Dear Reader,

inding a place to retreat to, a place to spend time with friends and family, is something that is very precious to me. Each of us has his or her own idea of a dream destination: perhaps it’s a beach by the sea, a lake for sailing, or the mountains where you can hike and ski. All around the world, there are a multitude of unique hotspots to satisfy everyone’s individual wishes. My personal dream destination is the

Balearic Island of Mallorca with its varied natural landscape and its very diverse towns and beaches. I have owned a traditional finca on Mallorca’s southwestern coast – my family’s second home – for many years now. In my estimation, Italy, too, is a country that boasts countless wonderful destinations. Enjoying an espresso on St. Mark’s Square in Venice or on the Piazza del Popolo in Rome has its own special flair. Those who would like to spend delightful hours by the seaside can choose from many bays along the mainland coast, or in Sardinia, Sicily or Capri. Our clients also appreciate the French Riviera with its picturesque towns, including Saint-Jean-CapFerrat and Cannes, which line the Mediterranean coast like a string of pearls. Another country with some very exclusive locations in which to fulfill your longing for your own piece of real estate with a private beach is the United States. Take, for example, Laguna Beach or one of the private islands in the Florida Keys. Some of our clients prefer breathtaking winter destinations in North America or in the Swiss or Austrian Alps. The focus here is on places like Aspen and Vail, or Gstaad, St. Moritz and Kitzbühel. Wherever your dream destination may be, on the following pages you will – once again – find a selection of properties in very special locations all around the world. Sincerely

Summertime! This is the season for rediscovering the simple things in life. Eating plump, juicy cherries and spitting out the pits, running around barefoot and feeling the warm breeze on your skin. When it comes to interiors it’s hard to find a nyone who can master the beauty of simplicity as tastefully and elegantly as Christian Liaigre. Growing up on the French Atlantic island of Île de Ré taught the designer and interior architect to appreciate the charm of minimalism. His beach house on St. Barts reflects the iconic spirit with which he has approached his craft for the past 27 years: celebrating materials but avoiding superfluous details. The Frenchman’s latest project – adding a whole new complex to the legendary Hôtel Costes in Paris – will reflect this as well. Turn to page 36 for our exclusive interview with Christian Liaigre. Actually, we have put together a whole issue for you in desperate anticipation of the happiest season of the year. Pay a visit to Agnès Monplaisir at her exquisite estate outside Paris, meet the sensational landscape architect Piet Oudolf or go surfing in South Africa. We hope you enjoy this new issue

With its red plush interiors and sales of millions of lounge music CDs, the Hôtel Costes in Paris has acquired cult status. Christian Liaigre is applying his minimalist style to the interior of a new Costes complex.

BARBARA VAN DER GRIJP  Barbara van der Grijp has been an Engel & Völkers Licence Partner since 2008 and has two shops in Amsterdam. Two more are in the pipeline. Before the 56-year-old made a career out of her hobbies – architecture and design – she worked as a lawyer and ran a gallery.

Ice expert

WOLFGANG GEHRMANN  Wolfgang Gehrmann, who writes for major German publications Die Zeit and GEO, regularly takes to the ice on skates – and has a soft spot for the lakes of Scandinavia. For GG, he drew on his experience of cruises to Nordic climes.

MS HANSEATIC

The real luxury on this expedition cruise is outside: a frozen wasteland illuminated by the cold light of the Arctic sun. Coming to terms with the silence, the endless ice and the meaninglessness of time is a humbling experience.

MS BREMEN

The bow of the ship is the best place to stand and listen to the crack and boom of the ice floes against the hull. The cabins empty completely when a whale or polar bear comes into view.

Sublime Journey to the Far North Summer is the perfect season to navigate the Arctic Ocean and the Northwest Passage. On a cruise, you will encounter polar bears, clarity and silence between Spitsbergen, Greenland and northern Canada. TEXT: Wolfgang Gehrmann PHOTOS: Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

U

ntil this beautiful midummer’s day  the only ice the guests on board have come across clinked gently in their glasses prior to the captain’s dinner. But on August 21, around midday, Thilo Natke, captain of the “MS Hanseatic,” notes down the word “ice” in his logbook – and next to it, the ship’s position: 68° 35’ N, 111° 07’ W. It is where the ship first ventures through a field of pack ice in the Dolphin and Union Strait. Icy shapes of various sizes are dotted around the steel-colored surface of the water and form a bizarre seascape that stretches all the way to the horizon beneath a pale sun. Piercing the arctic air is a percussive symphony led by the scraping and thudding of ice floes against the ship’s hull. “The long-awaited ice brings all the passengers crowding onto the foredeck and into the mess, where they stand in almost reverential silence as the ship quietly glides forward,” notes the captain in his logbook. It is moments like this that draw people to expedition cruises to the High Arctic. Some of them may have had enough of southern summers, while others want to experience the icy north with its whales and polar bears as long as it still exists. Even captains who have navigated the polar waters up to 150 times like Natke are unable to contain their enthusiasm for the ultimate treat that lies ahead: the humbling experience of boundless space, silence, clarity and immeasurable time. The Hamburg-based Hapag-Lloyd shipping company offers summer cruises between Spitsbergen, Greenland and the northern coast of Canada on board its small cruise vessels: the “Hanseatic” and the “Bremen.” Responding to increasing demand, the company has also built two further ships. The routes and schedules are determined beforehand, but the details of each expedition are dictated by the weather, the tides and the ice drift. And by the kings of the Arctic. When the announcement “polar bears in sight!” rings out from the loudspeakers, the ship’s restaurant will empty in a matter of minutes, even during a captain’s dinner. The captain doesn’t mind stopping for an hour or so to allow passengers to observe the bears drifting past on their ice floe. While polar bear sightings are not guaranteed in the price, lucky Arctic voyagers are bound to see whales spouting. They will encounter a minke, humpback or even a blue whale and witness the incredible sight of flukes rising from the sea only to disappear again in elegant slow motion. When watching whales or polar bears it is better to stay on board the ship and observe the majestic creatures from afar. But when walruses come into view, tough rubber dinghies called Zodiacs are deployed so that passengers can climb aboard and observe the third member of the “Arctic Big Three” up close. These tusked and flippered creatures love nothing better than to relax on rocks and ice shelves, and at the most, will tussle with each other for a good spot. Once they’ve slid into the water, the gently giants will allow the dinghies to approach them to within twenty meters.

PLAYGROUND INTERVIEW

Great Outdoors

What is the secret of a good product? Edward Barber: A good p roduct

should be meaningful and useful; ideally it should also be passed down the generations and used every day. A classic is an object that you never tire of and treasure, but also cannot live without on a practical, everyday level. Is this the design philosophy you applied when you designed the “Tibbo” furniture range for Dedon? Jay Osgerby: We designed

the collection with the intention of bringing the sensibility of indoor furniture outside. That’s why the pieces work both inside and outside the home. The chairs and tables are tactile and architecturally calm, which we intended to contrast with the often chaotic nature of the outside environment. The furniture is crafted from premium teak sourced from sustainable plantations, and so has great weather resistance and durability, even in extreme conditions. If the collection is outside, it will naturally acquire a beautiful silver-gray patina, whereas indoors it will retain its golden hue. The cushions and the soft-touch, natural-looking fiber that we developed specially for

26

this collection provide comfortable seating. The furniture is also light enough to be moved around with ease. How much of your personal style is in the products? Edward Barber: It is difficult to pinpoint a particular “style” in our work, because we approach each project in isolation. For us, the design process involves a series of discussions, sketches and model-making over a period of time until we are satisfied with the solution. What do you like most about your job? Edward Barber: I love working with great manufacturers who share our vision and collaborate to create items that are timeless, versatile and uncompromising. There are so many products out there that we have to ensure that anything we add to the mix is worthy of the resources and materials utilized. What inspires you? Jay Osgerby: Most things. As a designer you can’t help but look at the world with an enquiring mind. Our minds are full of problems that need to be solved. We find solutions when we least expect it, and that’s the magical part of being a designer – noticing it when you see it.

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby founded their studio in London in 1996. The “Tibbo” collection is their first outdoor furniture project.

he finds them here on the island of St. Barts. The warm wind on your skin, the cheerful Caribbean colors and the close proximity to the sea. The well-known Frenchman has designed elaborate houses on the island for famous American art dealer Larry Gagosian and Russian business magnate Roman Abramovich. Liaigre is also always welcome on board the massive 60-meter Pirini Navi “Seahawk” when its owner moors at the Port of Gustavia. The cabana he built on this bay, right beside the Le Sereno hotel, another work by the minimalist master, celebrates the simplicity of an earlier time on the French Caribbean island. Its interior reflects Christian Liaigre’s love of nature, his appreciation for raw materials and his eye for the essentials. The famous French designer enjoys spending time here with his 10-year-old son Léonard. “We cook together when we’re here, and Léonard likes to go fishing with the local children and swimming in the sea. The only thing he hates is the jetlag after the eight-hour flight from Paris.”

years ago, I happened to stop my car on this property to take in the beautiful view of the bay. It had a small restaurant on it at the time, and a local man sat down next to me with a beer in his hand. We just sat there together for a while looking at the sea. Eventually, he started talking, and told me that, twenty years earlier, his grandfather had acquired this very piece of land in exchange for a truck. “Do you want to buy some land near this bay?” he suddenly asked me, and I told him that I was planning to have a a look around, but he shot back: “Well then, you’re sitting on

it!” So I bought the land and built a simple cabana on it like the ones people used to live in on the island years ago. That was before all the big houses were built. St. Barts is only a three-hour flight from New York City, and things have changed a lot here. Back then, there wasn’t even one big house, just simple Swedish-style cabanas. Now, it seems I do own the very last cabana.

I tend to stay away over New Year’s because that’s when the Americans come to celebrate, and it’s just far too loud. In the summertime, it’s actually also too hot for me. My favorite time to come to St. Barts is in the spring or after hurricane season in the fall. When the parties are over, that’s when the island regains its original charm and is much more easygoing. St. Barts is still very much influenced by the reggae musicians and bohemian artists who used to live here, and there is still a thriving creative scene consisting of European and American artists. Lola Schnabel, for instance, the daughter of the painter Julian Schnabel, is my neighbor. She recently completed a portrait of my son Léonard. You grew up on the island of Île de Ré, which is situated off the coast of La Rochelle in France. Does St. Barts remind you a little bit of your childhood days on the Atlantic coast?

I think there might be a connection. Many sailers from La Rochelle also live on St. Barts today, so I really do feel quite at home here. Isn’t living on this island – where life is reduced to the essentials – somewhat representative of the Liaigre style? Does it not perhaps reflect your creed, according to

It does, and it has also grown a little bit boring after all these years. Intellectually, I have other priorities now, and would rather work as an artist than a designer. It feels like a natural change, like an evolution.

Even before you launch your new furniture line, you intend to complete another big project next year – the spectacular extension of the legendary Hôtel Costes in Paris, which is known for its eternally booked patio restaurant, its unmistakeable and internationally famous music compilations and last but certainly not least, its red plush interior by the designer Jacques Garcia. How did this collaboration come about?

I had already done the interior of La Société restaurant in SaintGermain-de-Prés in Paris, which was owned by the same person. Back then, I was inspired by the fine arts academy just down the road and decided I wanted to design a bistro for the artists. The owner loved the spirit of that place. What I enjoy most about the Costes project is being able to work with one single person as opposed to a big hotel company where I would be working on a project with ten different people, none of whom would understand much about de CHRISTIAN LIAIGRE sign. Here I’m collaborating directly with the owner, and that is a real pleasure. We meet every other day or even several times a week to exchange all kinds of interesting ideas, which we then put into practice without much discussion. The new Costes hotel will be very different from the old one. It will have large, comfortable suites on each of its six floors, suites in which guest will want to spend much more time than just a few days, even with small children. I think we are building the first hotel ever that put any thought into children’s bedrooms.

I’m currently working on a new furniture collection, which I am planning to launch in 2020. Unlike the collections I have done in the past, which were more commercial, the new line will consist of unique pieces and be much more radical. I want to venture down new paths and only do things that really speak to me – like working with artists. He’s been called the god of perennials, the rock star of landscaping, the king of naturalism: Piet Oudolf is one of the most famous garden designers in the world. Besides creating part of Battery Park and the High Line in New York, he has also done private gardens and temporary installations, including for the Biennale in Venice. When it comes to the art of arranging plants, Oudolf is second to none. TEXT: Uta Abendroth

lilies and ornamental alliums, with asters, peonies and milkweeds, with beebalm, meadow rue, moor grass, forget-me-nots and viper’s bugloss. The Dutchman is considered the best and most influential garden designer in the world today. He is unparalleled when it comes to combining trees, grasses, hedges, shrubs, annuals and perennials and establishing relationships between them, creating patterns and repetitions that add up to unique arrangements: “I combine plants that feel comfortable with one another,” says the 73-year-old. “It’s a question of aesthetics more than anything else, because gardens are a sort of living picture.” In the past, gardening as an art form was a profession mainly cultivated by the English. Piet Oudolf was probably the last person on earth who thought he would end up influencing generations of landscape architects and garden designers and casting a spell on visitors with his ingeniously arranged green spaces. When he was in his early 1920s he tried out all sorts of things, working as

a waiter in his parents’ restaurant, a barkeeper, steelworker, fishmonger and architect. But he didn’t find any of it particularly satisfying. Then, at 25, he came across a book by English garden designer Beth Chatto. Oudolf set off for Essex, had a look at Chatto’s nursery and discovered his soft spot for plants. Back in his home country, he and his wife Anja opened a nursery in Haarlem in 1982 and began propagating plants that were difficult or impossible to find in the Netherlands at the time. Later the family moved to the village of Hummelo in the Dutch province of Gelderland and laid out a garden around an old farmhouse. The 10,000 square meters of grounds – which are open to the public from May to October (except for July) – are an experimental lab, show garden and nursery all rolled into one. And for Oudolf, the place he laid the foundations for his international success as an innovative garden trendsetter. at the beginning, when I started exploring the topic,  I liked English gardens more than anything else,” says Oudolf. “But then, influenced by Mien Ruys (Editor’s note: full name Wilhelmina Jacoba Moussault-Ruys, one of the first female land-

scape gardeners in the Netherlands) and friends, I gradually developed a liking for more dynamic and natural gardens. That led to me incorporating wild plants and a lot of different grasses into more and more of my designs – plants that had never been used in gardens before.” For the co-founder of what’s come to be known as the Dutch Wave – a movement that aims to give the plants and their esthetics center stage – it is not the color of a plant that constitutes the decisive criterion, but its structure. For Oudolf, a well-designed garden isn’t only made up of flowers, it includes trees and bushes as well. And it should never be boring: “A good garden is interesting all year round. It’s all about composing a landscape that goes beyond the combination of individual plants. Even decaying, dying plants are beautiful, as are flower skeletons and seedheads. There’s no reason why everything has to flower at the same time.” From the mid-90s, the Dutchman’s art of creating naturalist gardens made him famous the world over. It was around that time that he combined 200 different plant species and varieties in the Drömparken in the center of Enköping, Sweden. The sea of blue wood-

land sage (Salvia nemorosa) that flowers between June and August is nothing short of captivating. Oudolf’s career gathered momentum; architects started asking him for garden designs that would frame their buildings. Private clients, garden owners, art galleries and museums followed. The projects varied in scale from relatively small all the way to huge – like his design of the High Line in New York. Between 2006 and 2014, an elevated section of a disused railway line in Manhattan was turned into a park. Hovering nine meters above the ground, the spectacular green space measures 2.3 kilometers in length. The kinds of plants Oudolf selected for his design were mainly ones that had already established themselves on the abandoned viaduct – just not in a structured way or in rotation with perennials and shrubs. ithout scrupulously detailed planning,  a garden simply won’t work, regardless of whether it’s a public or a private space. It’s all about changing visual reference points in the beds, about playing with sizes and proportions, about rhythm. It’s about ensuring the plants are suited to the climate, temperatures and the amount of rainfall. The design process is complex

and time consuming. Oudolf gets to grips with it in the studio in his village, the individual beds spread out before him on long rolls of tracing paper. But it’s certainly not the case that one sheet corresponds to one garden. Instead, the outline of one and the same bed is drawn onto several pieces of the transparent paper. It’s the markings that vary: round squiggles in different colors. The bushes and trees are on one piece of paper, the perennials on the next, the grasses on the third, the seasonal plants on the fourth. Placing them one on top of the other reveals the final concept. When it comes to implementing it, the circles are actually sprayed onto the ground in paint. That way Oudolf can be sure the gardeners render his design one-to-one. It’s fair to say that a great deal of what Oudolf designs ultimately depends on the gardeners. Piet Oudolf works alone – sometimes on more than 15 projects at a time –, draws up his plans and then hands the whole thing over to strangers. It’s a risk. “My work is only ever successful if responsible people take care of everything later on,” he says. “I have to look at the local conditions very care-

fully, because plants are sensitive and easily damaged. I have to be aware of the prerequisites. That doesn’t just mean being mindful of the budget; you have to think about care and maintenance as well, about the skills of the people who will be looking after the garden once it’s finished.” Piet Oudolf is a quiet, thoughtful man; he’s also creative and extremely patient. And just like an architect who has his own distinctive style, the Dutchman tries to design his projects in such a way that each and every one of them is nevertheless new and feels special. Even if he chooses the same plant varieties, the individual concept he comes up with can be relied on to distinguish the gardens from one another. Above all, Oudolf is proud of his public gardens like the High Line, his section of Battery Park in New York and Leuvehoofd Park in Rotterdam, because they enable him to reach a wide audience and get a lot of feedback. It reassures him that he’s on the right track with his work and strikes a chord: “People have a great need for nature. The fact that they like my work makes me very happy.”

his magnificent residence was built in the heart of Berlin’s Dahlem district in 1923. With its art nouveau features, it reflects the historic planning and diversity of Dahlem’s mansion architecture dating from the 1920s. The generous dimensions of the interior layout are also characteristic: with four large ground floor reception and living rooms all flowing into one another, and well-proportioned private quarters and bedrooms

upstairs. A roof conversion, with the addition of a large roof terrace, was realised in the 1990s. There is also a self-contained apartment in the wing of the lower ground level with daylight windows. Many period features such as stucco decoration, wooden floors, wooden window frames, doors and lights are still preserved. The sunny south-facing garden with its mature trees forms an enticing place to relax during the warmer months.

Thanks to the vessels, the floating labyrinth of newly formed icebergs on Greenland’s western coast becomes navigable. The Jakobshavn Glacier is the world’s most active glacier. In warm years, it advances by roughly 45 meters every day, releasing up to 25 million tons of ice into the sea. The red expedition parkas are ideal for being photographed against the huge, blue icy walls and the bizarre shapes of the silent giants. Fears of Titanic-style incidents are unfounded: the flat Zodiac vessels are not in danger from the ice beneath the ocean surface. Furthermore, the agile mother ship, which measures roughly 130 meters in length and has a draft of only five meters, is able to stay at a safe distance even in darkness and foggy conditions thanks to its radar. As there are no harbors anywhere close, the inflatable dinghies also allow for “wet landings” on beaches. This makes hikes across the tundra possible at short notice, for example if the weather and tides hamper the ship’s progress or if the seaplane transporting the polar pilots is delayed. Such jaunts change one’s perception of scale. The vast expanse of the arctic tundra hones the senses. You suddenly notice small animals more acutely, while modest lichens seem to exude the beauty and uniqueness of a lush spring meadow. On inhospitable Beechey Island, scenic delights are very limited. Three sailors’ graves serve as a reminder of the last expedition undertaken

in 1846 by the British explorer John Franklin, who was looking for the Northwest Passage – the sea route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean via the Arctic. He discovered it, but found himself unable to sail through it because of the ice sheet. Franklin perished along with his 129-strong crew. One of the consequences of climate change is that several years ago, the passage became free of ice – and thus navigable – during the summer months. This allows cruise ships to venture through it without the aid of icebreakers. At its halfway point, in Peel Sound, the passage can still be tricky to navigate because this is where different flows of pack ice meet, creating opaque clusters of vertically tilted floes illuminated by a low-lying sun. So you never really know which of the roughly one dozen Inuit settlements between Baffin Bay and the Beaufort Sea the ship will be able to reach safely. None of them are idyllic places: a few hundred inhabitants, a co-op store, post office, school and a cemetery. Where ice dictates the speed and rhythm of travel, you find time to read. And what could possibly beat The Discovery of Slowness, Sten Nadolny’s magnificent novel about John Franklin’s life? When the explorer gets stuck in the ice for the first time, north of the 81st parallel on a brig called the “Trent” in 1818, Nadolny imagines him developing a fascination with the glittering, icy world and its absolute timelessness. Two hundred years on, Captain Natke’s passengers share this sentiment. Franklin muses that in this environment, no one actually needs a destination anymore. The destination was only a means to find your way here.

roughly 400 guests to an event at the QPxLDN, the new “it” restaurant in the heart of Mayfair. The walls were adorned with 20 paintings by exceptional artists like Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall and Joan Miró. The works by post-impressionists, cubists and fauvists were showcased by #TheKrag Communications und Predella House, whose mission it is to make art even more integral to interior design. This approach also prompted Engel & Völkers London to become involved with the event. Among the guests were many well-known faces from the movies and TV, including Craig McGinlay, who is rumored to be the next James Bond, Phoebe Dynevor and Meredith Ostrom. Art collectors and curators also accepted the invitation. A menu inspired by Picasso was served at the QPxLDN – and many of the works of art ended up with new owners.

The warm face of cool Carma throws are made of premium faux fur and so like the real thing you’d never guess they’re manmade.

P

olar bear, puma, lynx or opossum –

all these animals have been hunted for their soft and beautifully marked fur for centuries. But Carma, a label from Bielefeld, Germany, doesn’t harm a single hair on an animal’s head to make its soft and cuddly throws: all its blankets are made of luxury faux fur. The upmarket artificial fur products are produced at a weaving mill in France and lined with a supersoft and breathable blend of wool and cashmere in Bielefeld. Customers can choose from 45 varieties of fur and two different blanket versions: fringed or with mitered corners. Ralf and Ruth Bartelsheim, who founded their company in 1990, launch two collections a year – one for spring and summer, the other for autumn and winter. When architects or interior designers approach them with special requests for furnishing hotels or yachts, the Bartelsheims are more than happy to provide the extremely natural-looking imitation furs and hides in customized colors. Besides throws, the company now makes useful accessories like the Travel Pillow out of its exquisite materials as well. It too is covered with soft, cuddly faux fur and doubles as a muff that you can conveniently slip your hands and arms into. And when the lucky owner boards an airplane, he or she has a luxuriously soft cushion on which to rest their head.

1 Carma’s faux fur throws are the epitome of snug and cozy luxury. The combination of quality, design and workmanship results in unique products. The hardwearing throws owe their durability to an inspired blend of synthetic fibers and cashmere. Their cozy texture and soft look and feel is dominated by the high cashmere content 1 The velvety soft “Puma Pastell” throw 2 The white-and-gray “Husky” model is strikingly realistic 3 The current collection includes rugs in three colors 4 The latest designs from the Carma label are a combination of faux fur and knitwork.

For the new headquarters of the Antwerp Harbor uthority, architect Zaha Hadid – who passed away last year and is famous for her architectural works of art that A feature a dizzying array of shapes – took inspiration from the glittering gems. A sweeping ship-like object rises above the neo-historical former fire station building that was constructed on the Kattendijk dock in 1922. The sky, clouds and water are reflected on the new building’s façades, which consist of glass triangles. The iconic extension, one end of which is cantilevered, rests on a slightly sloped concrete structure, with the old and the new building connected by an observation floor. The stories above it accommodate the roughly 500 employees of the harbor authority, as well as a public library with a reading room, conference rooms, an auditorium and a restaurant.
