YACHTING NEWS
GET TOGETHER This year the yachting scene was treated to yet another new and unique event: at the beginning of June the first “SuperYacht Gallery” was held in London. All the most venerable names in the industry – from Lürssen to Benetti, Delta Marine and Nuvolari Lenard – converged in the auspicious surroundings of London’s Saatchi Gallery. For three days, anyone interested had the opportunity to take a glimpse behind the scenes of how the manufacturers and designers work. Alongside workshops and seminars, invited guests also seized the chance to mingle and network on a specially created upper VIP deck.
Water Worlds There’s always lots to discover, both above and below the surface. Find out here just where it’s worth taking the plunge.
DESIGNS FROM THE DEEP The most wondrous lights and furniture pieces emerge from the studio of Aqua Creations in NYC, exclusively produced by photographer Albi and artist Ayala Serfaty with an eye on ecological aspects.
UNDERWATER FLYING Attach fibreglass wings to a joint that can be moved in all directions and the result is a completely new diving experience. Swimmers glide like a dolphin through the water using muscle power and the pull of a motorboot (Subwing).
SOLID MEETS SLEEK Made from a single slab of stone, this sink unit appears almost to float – despite its weighty presence on top of the delicate glass corpus of the “Artematica” kitchen counter (Valcucine).

The perfect Boutsen look: Light, breezy and homely. With all materials specially adapted to withstand a life at sea.
Fine Living on the High Seas Daniela Boutsen’s home base and design office is just a two-minute walk from Monaco’s worldfamous port. So the idea of applying her aviation expertise to yachting was, quite literally, not that far-flung a notion. What’s she most interested in? Balanced proportions and harmonious colours. of private jets with your design firm. For around 18 months now you’ve also been offering your services to yacht owners.
When it comes to designing the interior of airplanes there aren’t just simply aesthetic matters of taste to consider. There are many safety-related regulations to adhere to. These parameters are of course incredibly strict and the interior, including any furnishings and objects, need to be able to withstand turbulence when airbound. Flying cutlery isn’t the only thing that poses a genuine risk here. And even though the regulations at sea aren’t quite as strict, there are still many parallels. So my experience does come in very handy. How did this come about?
What particular challenges does a boat pose when it comes to furnishing its interior? The challenges are all to do with the natural elements in which a boat finds itself. Saltwater, the sun and wind are all tough on materials. Whenever we make use of woods, we always place an emphasis on the highest level of resistance to the weather. Stainless steel cannot be allowed to oxidise, and the textiles and paints used must be absolutely lightproof so that they don’t fade. I place a high priority on selecting

Most definitely! I would say that a yacht is something a little more emotional – a real affair of the heart. Yacht owners are usually much more closely involved than is often the case with aircraft. A boat enjoys the status of being a ‘personal toy’ more often. Some clients are so keen on details that they even make decisions on the stitching for the on-board towels themselves. I enjoy this close interaction as we slowly but surely move forward towards the perfect finished result. Where to you find your inspiration? I come from an art background and Kandinsky, with his aesthetic formula “point and line and plane”, was my teacher as it were. I am extremely interested in ensuring balanced proportions and harmony through colour, with the ultimate aim of creating an optical equilibrium. But I see my job as a service provider rather than a designer. The key thing for me is to cater to the wishes of my clients and adapt to all the specific conditions both on and below deck. ther?

Viewed from outside, “Silver Fast” has a rather cool and understated look. Inside however, her warm and refined materials evoke a homely atmosphere. One very interesting feature is the conservatory on the main deck: its wraparound glass doors can be fully retracted, forming an indoor or outdoor dining space for 20 people. On the lower deck there are guest cabins and quarters for the 18-strong crew, along with an engine room and air-conditioned beach club. Another absolute highlight is the on-board spa, featuring a sauna, steam room, massage room, beauty salon and gym. The Yachting Hub Majorca has evolved into Europe’s number one address for luxury yachts. This is especially true when it comes to yacht refits and maintenance.

P
alma de Majorca has established itself
as one of the world’s top superyacht destinations. The traditional “Boat Show Palma” has been taking place here since 1983, and has been instrumental in ensuring the nautical industry is such a dominant force on the Balearic island. Arne Ploch, President of the “Balearic Yacht Brokers Association” (BYBA) has been observing this trend: “In Palma, superyachts in particular have a major role to play. There is no other show in Europe where so many sailing superyachts are exhibited as here.” And Jonathan Syrett, Managing Director of the renowned international yacht broker Camper & Nicholsons in Spain, has set his sights on another booming aspect of the industry: “Demand for chartering luxury yachts has grown enormously on the island. Last summer we had 30 charter yachts in our portfolio. This year it has already grown to 70.” The Port of Palma has several different marinas offering superb berthing facilities. There is Club de Mar to the west which has an on-site bar, restaurant and shops, Marina Moll Vell, Marina Port de Majorca, Pantalan de la Cuarentena (originally the quarantine dock), Pantalan del Mediterraneo, and the Real Club Nautico, the most central in the harbour, popular with visiting superyacht captains who enjoy the club’s services and activities. The largest shipyard in the port is the Servicios Tecnicos Portuarios (STP). This yard offers haul out facilities, hard standing and associated services. After a recent overhaul to raise the quality and quantity of the refit and repair infrastructure, this shipyard now has the largest travel lift in the Balearics, and has become one of the most highly respected boatyards in the Mediterranean. Just over 5 km to the west of Palma lies Puerto Portals, which is renowned around the world not only as a first-class full service marina for superyachts but also for the trendsetting reputation it has earned itself since opening in 1986. It has an abundance of designer shops, boutiques, bars and fine dining restaurants, all making it a very fashionable port. The Mediterranean yachting season is generally thought to start in Palma in April and is active right through to the end of the season, which is typically marked by the close of the Monaco Yacht Show in late September/early October. In fact though, Majorca’s mild and pleasant climate makes cruising possible all year round.

YACHT MARINA WITH PROMENADE
Portals Nous is one of the smaller and more quaint tourist destinations on Majorca. At its centre there is a large marina with a total of 639 boat moorings for yachts between eight and 60 metres in length. The beach at Portals Nous, called the Platja de l’Oratori, is located within a rocky cove, enclosed at one side by the harbour wall and by a rocky outcrop at the other end. On the clifftop above this idyllic beach there is a viewing platform where the sensational outlook over the neighbouring bays can be enjoyed.
MAJORCA’S ARTIST COLONY
Set in idyllic surroundings high above the Mediterranean, Deià is surrounded by olive, citrus and almond trees. It is known perhaps more than anything as an artist’s colony, and the likes of Pablo Picasso, Robert Graves, Sir Peter Ustinov, Ava Gardner and many others all once resided here. The village is located in the northwest of Majorca and is enclosed by the wooded peaks of the Tramuntana Mountains – but it’s only around ten minutes to the sea from here.
THE PERFECT BAY
The small bay known as Cala Blava is a particularly beloved place among native islanders. Between the cliffs dotted with pine trees and shrubs, stone steps lead down to the beach, the only sandy beach in the entire region. Boats lie at anchor close to the shoreline, where the sea bed is sandy and the water is three to four metres deep. Another splendid sight is the Hotel Cap Rocat, which is built on the site of a former military fortress: spectacular suites can now be found in the former casemates.
IDYLL IN THE MOUNTAINS
The town of Sóller is one of the most beautiful on the island, and a paradise for hikers, cyclists and connoisseurs alike. Since 2011 it has held the status of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, which can be attributed to the fact that Sóller has remained largely untouched by tourism on Majorca. The centre of the town is located three kilometres from the coast, although it does also boast direct access to the sea in the form of the Port de Sóller.

YACHTING ADVICE
Thinking about buying a yacht? Sebastiano Pitasi is the expert when it comes to acquiring a yacht, regardless of size. Here is his list of the ten things to pay attention to when buying. Of course it should be fun – but careful planning is also needed. Pitasi’s most important piece of advice is therefore: start by chartering … FOLLOW YOUR EMOTIONS
The essence of yachting is pleasure. You should fall in love with a yacht, which will make every moment worthwhile. you, but it could deter future buyers. We recommend asking your broker how easy it would be to resell the yacht after five years. WHERE TO KEEP YOUR YACHT
There are many regions you can choose to berth your yacht. The easier it is to get to your yacht, the more you will use her. Optimise the location for short visits such as weekend trips. Which places can you visit with just a few hours of cruising?

Think about your lifestyle and how you see yourself using the yacht. This will determine your requirements. TRY BEFORE YOU COMMIT: CHARTER
Buying a yacht is a big commitment, not just for you but for your whole family. Sometimes it is better to charter various yachts in different places to get the feel for it first. Once you know what you like and most importantly dislike, you will be able to make that commitment more confidently.
HAPPY CREW, HAPPY OWNER
Choosing the right crew is important for your experience on board. It starts with finding a good captain who is hands-on and a real team builder. He will not only help you select the other crew, but also help to keep them. COSTS OF OWNERSHIP
There is a common misunderstanding that the operational costs are a percentage of the value of the vessel. But as a yacht gets older, the value goes down while the running costs may go up. The operational costs depend on the size of the yacht, which determines the amount of crew, the size of the berth, fuel consumption and the maintenance costs. PRIVATE OR COMMERCIAL?
