YACHTING WELCOME

E Dear Reader,

very industry has a leader in the field. Sometimes it’s a company, sometimes a person, and other times it can be the skill set and heritage of an entire country. In this edition, we would like to pay tribute to ‘The Best of Yachting in Germany’. Our cover story is dedicated to one of the leading lights in the yachting industry: Nobiskrug. Founded in 1905,

the German shipyard has a long-standing history and is the builder of the most iconic yacht in the world today, the Sail-

ing Yacht A. Germany is not only notable for its ship building but also for its sailing destinations. Discover the scenic sailing route of Fehmarn, Kiel and the southern islands off the coast of Denmark, known collectively as the Danish South Sea, in our Baltic Sea charter itinerary. Another special read can be found on page 26 in an exclusive interview with Christian Zott, a highly successful German businessman with a passion for sailing, who is the owner of S/Y Miquette, a yacht currently listed for sale with Engel & Völkers Yachting. On the last page, in our Yachting Advice column, our very own Yacht Advisor Jan Kronbügel talks about the latest trends and news on Germany’s yacht market, with an in-house perspective from Engel & Völkers Yachting. Germany stands for quality and efficiency, a work ethic that we at Engel & Völkers Yachting pride ourselves in. We are proud of our brand roots, founded in Hamburg in Germany over 40 years ago, which today have evolved into a globally recognised powerhouse of premium services. Our intention is marry our brand heritage with yacht building at its finest and highlight the common value we share: Made in Germany. Sincerely,

Abeking & Rasmussen, was styled by the London-based Harrison Eidsgaard design studio. It has won four international design and innovation awards. The steel and aluminium vessel has a distinctive exterior with an axe-bow, dark hull and low-slung superstructure. There are a variety of interesting communal spaces, from the 8 x 2.5 metre swimming pool on the sun deck to the Nemo Lounge below the waterline.

FROM A VISION TO LUXURIOUS PERFECTION Every superyacht is in a class of its own. The only thing they have in common is their pursuit of uncompromised individuality. YACHTING DESTINATIONS

Hidden Baltic Gems

Pølser instead of palm trees, down-to-earth “hygge” rather than dazzling highlife: this is precisely what makes the Danish South Sea such a popular sailing region. On the way there, why not take a relaxing pleasure trip along Germany’s west Baltic coastline?

THE BEST ADDRESSES

Kappeln

1

Avernakö

COASTAL CHARM

COOL SOUTH SEA VIBES

Sailing on the Schlei Estuary: Green forests and miles of fields, charming little villages with colourful gardens near the shore. Then in Kappeln itself there’s a quaint quay and the unique 15th century herring weir. What more could one possibly ask for? You’d like some sea? Just a little further, past the fishing village of Maasholm and the green and white lighthouse at Schleimünde, the Baltic Sea awaits you.

Finally: the Danish South Sea! Surrounded by countless isles south of Funen, Avernakö is one of the larger islands, at eight kilometres in length. The beach in Revkrog, a sickle-shaped bay in the southeast, is deserted, and the water is crystal clear. Taking a dip is almost like being in the real South Seas – just slightly cooler.

Glücksburg

2

WHITE SPLENDOUR

Those upping anchor in Glücksburg after a cruise on the Flensburg Fjord often have a rather grand destination in mind: the moated castle at Glücksburg. This impressive, bright white Renaissance ensemble was once the seat of government of ruling Danish kings and became known as the “cradle of the European royal houses” for its skilful marriage diplomacy.

Flensburg

Svendborg

ON TOUR WITH HELGE

Back in the Middle Ages, this port city was one of Scandinavia’s most important trading centres. Even today, sailing boats pack in side by side in summer. If you don’t want to give up your hard-fought place, you can board the traditional steamship Helge: it calls at Kristiansminde, Troense, Grönodde and Valdemars Slot in the eastern Svendborg Sound – all nice stops for a walk or a visit to the beach. 8

Langeland

BOUNDLESS & BOTTLED UP

WHEN THE PONIES WENT WILD

Sailing, shopping, sightseeing – it’s all done in style in Flensburg. The modern marina is located right in the city centre, next to the museum harbour with its historic sailing boats. In the Old Town and on “Rote Strasse”, façades from the Classical, Renaissance and Baroque periods remain intact for our admiration. Meanwhile in picturesque merchant courtyards, visitors are drawn to cafés, restaurants, boutiques – and a rum manufactory. Once upon a time, Flensburg owed its considerable wealth to the high-percentage sugarcane distillate.

Rudköbing is the largest of the six marinas on the island, and Ristinge Havn the smallest. Spodsbjerg Turistbadehavn is interesting for fishing enthusiasts – located right in the middle of rich fishing grounds. There’s nothing remotely hectic about this place, and finding a tranquil spot on the beach is easy anywhere on Langeland. One special attraction is a herd of around 60 Exmoor ponies that have been living wild here in a fenced-in area since 1964.

Sønderborg

JOUST FOR FUN!

“Borg” is a sure sign that there’s a castle closeby: In Sønderborg it greets you as you enter the narrow strait known as the “Als Sund”. At its eastern wall is a replica of an historic jousting arena. Riders in medieval costumes can be seen in action during the months of July and August, with plenty of opportunity to stroke the horses afterwards. TEXT: HANS OBERLÄNDER; ILLUSTRATION: MONG TING ZHU

Aerö

NATURAL BEAUTY

Marstal, the most important port on Aerö, used to accommodate some 300 freighters a century ago, and the maritime museum tells of the splendour of those bygone days. Nowadays, container ships and docks set the scene as one passes in and out. Caution is advised: Outside the channel it quickly flattens off. Whether by bike or by free public bus: It’s worth exploring the island’s biggest attractions: beaches, hills and the 30 m high chalk coast near Voderup. 10

Aerøskøbing

RELAXED IN THE HERE & NOW

THE HOME OF HYGGE

Dyvig has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful natural harbours to up anchor in the whole of Denmark. Manoeuvring in is a zigzag-like experience, as you pass anchorages and it seems as though you’re traversing a meadow to reach your place of rest. This is a wonderful haven in which to unwind and spend time. And when your stomachs begin to growl, the fine “Dyvig Badehotel” right on the harbourfront offers equally fine dining.

Cobblestones, colourful half-timbered houses, and hollyhocks galore: Aerøskøbing, a 750-year-old port town, is a picture-postcard kind of place at every turn – and officially recognised as part of Europe’s cultural heritage since 2002. The narrow streets can get crowded, particularly during the summer months. Fortunately though, a quiet haven of peace awaits in the commercial port: your yacht, your boat. Cast away, let’s sail on!

resteas is listed with Engel & Völkers Yachting for both sale and charter, and is represented by Sebastiano Pitasi, Head of Sales, and Oxana Vergne, Charter Manager/Head of Charter. This impressive vessel completed her first season this year in the Mediterranean where she cruised in the south of France, Italy and Turkey. Aresteas Yachting, part of the Yıldız Group, was founded in 2009 in Marmaris. Aresteas is the first yacht to be built by Aresteas Yachting and captures the premium quality that the shipyard attests to. The vision to build a motor sailer to combine the best of both worlds was brought to life thanks to Karatas Yacht Design and Fuat Turan, the naval architect KYD Fuat Turan, and designers Ridade Tuncel and Aldo Viani. Her design philosophy is set to encourage outdoor living, with vast open decks that offer the most delightful sea views while cruising. “As a motor sailer, Aresteas is a unique yacht on both the sales and charter market. The passion of her owners has been perfectly transmitted in her flawless design, something that becomes evident as soon as you step aboard. My favourite part about this superyacht is that throughout its design, they kept the elements of its Turkish heritage, without overpowering the overall styling. I believe that Turkish yacht builders are becoming more prominent in the market. Aresteas forces the spotlight on them and is a flawless example

of Turkish craftsmanship and capability,” says Sebastiano Pitasi. Enter through her spacious main deck salon with comfortable seating areas and a bar ready with a welcome drink. Discover her stylish interiors envisioned by Italian designer Aldo Viani. The earthy colour tones that flow throughout the yacht accompanied by natural materials such as leather, treated wood and marble allow her guests to feel at home even though in such luxurious surroundings. Outdoors, she has a fantastic sundeck and aft upper deck that are perfectly set up for ‘at sea’ entertaining and offer many alternatives for al fresco dining and lounging. Aresteas has six very spacious staterooms with the highest level of detail paid to the interior design, including a master suite, two VIP suites, two twin and one double cabin. Each of the staterooms has en suite bathroom facilities and is equipped with a full entertainment system for after-hours fun in case each guest has a different tempo. Her master suite is the definition of a true oasis, with a fine 180-degree panoramic view. The walk-in wardrobe is the perfect addition for those who come with a considerable collection of holiday attire. In addition, her guests will have the chance to admire the original works of famous artists such as Burhan Dogançay, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboglu, Avni Arbas and Zühtü Müridoglu, who are among the leading figures of the Turkish fine arts.

elivered in 2002 and refitted from 2014 to 2018, Luca Bassani was the exterior designer appointed to the project with German Frers as the naval architect. Together, a beautiful custom sail was delivered to her first and only owner who envisioned the dream sailing yacht. Kauris III is exclusively listed with Engel & Völkers Yachting represented by Sebastiano Pitasi, E&V Head of Sales. She is a superbly elegant sailing yacht. Her style is enhanced by the extensive use of teak wood all over the deck, which is hard not to admire when stepping aboard. She boasts many stand-out features including her pre-preg carbon construction, which limits her displacement to 80 tons and ensures high performances in any wind, as well as making her surprisingly simple to handle under sail. Most recently, she was equipped with a large set of sails including brand new 3Di sails. As her guests step on board, they will find themselves in the large saloon, which has the most comfortable lounge area with seating upholstered in ecru fabric. Piero Castellini was the interior designer, using rich cherry wood throughout the yacht for an elegant touch. A place for relaxation can be found on the large deck where the central cockpit has a table and seating for al fresco dining or a tasty aperitif. Eight guests can comfortably be accommodated on board in three cabins consisting of an aft

master suite and two twins plus two Pullman berths. All cabins have entertainment centres and full en suite facilities, while a further two cabins sleep four crew members. “Kauris III is a beautiful sailing yacht that is very owner-friendly. If her guests are looking to cruise the beautiful coasts on a fast-paced holiday she makes it very easy to do so. She is a high-performance sloop with a canting keel. Her carbon composite construction makes her very light, fast and extremely simple to handle under sail. When aboard you can really feel how simple and effortless it is to get around. If guests prefer to take things at a slower pace, she offers a level of comfort that is incomparable.” Having both capabilities makes her the perfect yacht to enjoy the wonders at sea. I believe that she is hard not to fall in love with as soon as she sets sail on a new adventure,” says Sebastiano Pitasi, E&V Head of Sales & representing broker. The master suite has direct access to the aft cockpit, perfect for sailing enthusiasts. The pleasure of waking up and heading out to watch the captain in cruise mood is a real treat. Moving through to the central cockpit, a table with seating can be found to drink a coffee al fresco style as the guests wait for breakfast to be served. Whether a cruise with friends, family or a romantic weekend, Kauris III is one of the most versatile yachts on the market to suit all her guests’ desires.

YACHTING INTERVIEW

Christian Zott always feels the urge to travel. At home in Munich when on land, he undertook a 7-month sailing trip aboard the “Miquette” with his 5-year-old son. The voyage took them from the Philippines via Australia to Panama and ending in the Mediterranean. Activities en route? Fishing, collecting coconuts, bananas and wood for big campfires on the beach, looking at islands, diving...

A Very Special Journey Christian Zott, entrepreneur and passionate yachtsman, set off on board the “Miquette” to experience the trip of a lifetime with his son. a child I was always floating around in dinghies on the Bavarian lakes, but I first came across property boats as a student. A friend and I had planned to go climbing in Greece after our interim exams, but when we got to Athens people recommended that we head to the Aegean Islands. At the pier in Naxos there was a worn-out ketch that belonged to two Canadians. They took us on board. We suffered a broken oar in a thunderstorm and became the rescuers in that particular adventure. At that moment I swore to myself that I would learn to sail when I got home. What was your most adventurous trip? Before my son started school I wanted to take him on a longer voyage and really show him the world of sailing. I bought the “Miquette”, a classic sailing yacht built in New York in 1986, 22 metres long and 5.3 metres wide, from an English businessman in Singapore. I then set sail with my boy, a skipper from Hamburg and a crew member – starting in the Philippines, via Australia to Panama and on to the Mediterranean. The “Miquette” is now moored peacefully in Sanremo. Did the trip always go smoothly? We had hardly left the Torres Strait between Australia and the south coast of New Guinea behind us when the first leg of our South Pacific crossing ended in a disaster. Cyclone Pam had ravaged the small South Pacific island of Vanuatu and a state of emergency had been proclaimed. We then sailed directly from the Solomon Islands on towards the Fiji Islands. What did you experience there? First we headed to Lautoka, which gave us a taste of what was to also be an amazing culinary journey. In Naigani there are fabulous reefs for diving. My son and I just sat down on the seabed, some three or four metres below sea level, and watched the cardinal fish, butterfly fish and boxfish. That was an overwhelming spectacle, to see the big carnival of the underwater world.

YACHTING ADVICE

Yachting in Germany Jan Kronbügel, Yacht Advisor at Engel & Völkers Yachting, shares his knowledge and perspective as to why Germany is one of the strongest yachting markets in the world. Discussing its excellent recruitment systems, values and ethics, and his thoughts on how the most distinguished shipyards in the country acquired this level of renown. WHAT IS THE GERMAN SIGNATURE FOR YOU? German engineering has a reputation for quality, efficiency and

reliability, all of which stems from a superior level of organisation. Universities in Germany have excellent systems in place for recruiting marine engineers and naval architects. This ensures that the skillset of its builders is kept alive for the future of its industry. It is the trust built up from this tradition that has allowed Germany to secure commission to build some of the largest yachts in the world. They have the capacity, infrastructure and quality of shipyards and suppliers to execute these projects. Clients know they can rest assured that the result will be exactly what they expected. WHY CHOOSE GERMANY?

The answer is simple: trust and reliability. One of the most reassuring things for a client is to work with a professional team they know they can trust to find the best solutions for their project. With Germany’s superb engineering capabilities and its direct approach, the client will always know what’s possible and what isn’t. They have bold ambition when it comes to embracing new designs and technologies, allowing them to push the envelope each time for their clients and offer alternative proposals to wishes that aren’t feasible.

WHO TO TURN TO?

Deciding on the builder for a client’s dream superyacht is one that is calculated, reviewed, questioned, then reviewed again. Germany is full of talented and experienced shipyards that have already produced some of the industry’s most notable yachts. One of the most effective ways to identify the best shipyard for your project is to take note of yachts already built and on the water. To name just a few: the German, family-run firm Lürssen is one of the best-known shipyards worldwide. It continuous-

ly ranks in world records for design and engineering and is the builder of the world’s largest private yacht, “Azzam”, with a length of 180 metres. Originally founded in 1877, Blohm+Voss is another reputable shipyard that became part of the Lürssen Group in 2016. One of the most innovative yards in Germany, it is specialised in a wide range of ship building including merchant vessels, yachts, offshore units, and passenger ships. Blohm+Voss also has a superb reputation for highly innovative refits and reconstructions, as well as for its in-house university and qualification centre to ensure it has the best people on the force. Nobiskrug is another German superyacht shipyard of international renown. It specialises in made-to-measure superyachts, with a long history of innovation that includes the construction of “SY A”, one of the world’s most iconic superyachts. WHAT IS THE STAPLE OF GERMAN YACHT BUILDING?

Size matters – a statement born by the German builder Lürssen. Clients looking to build megayachts seem to turn to Germany when it comes to extensive projects. Taking the global portfolio of megayachts delivered to date, three out of the top five are German-built. “Azzam” (180m) secures first place with a remarkable top speed of over 30 knots. “Eclipse”, (162.5m) an explorer yacht that can accommodate up to 36 guests and a crew of 100. Last but not least, “Al Said” measures 155m, making her the world’s fourth largest yacht. Megayachts have become a staple of German yacht building, but that is not to say they aren’t equally capable JAN KRONBÜGEL of building smaller vessels. Many Based in Germany as an independent Yacht Adshipyards focus on smaller boats visor with E&V Yachting, he has been a Legal and deliver just the same level of exCounsel for seven years and was previously an independent Sales Broker in London, where he pertise. The key thing to rememworked on several independent mandates for ber is that trust and reliability are yacht owners in Germany and Switzerland.
