Spring/Summer 2017

Department Report

Our department strives to offer quality programs and parks consistent with the City’s core values of Excellence, Stewardship, Integrity, Service, and Loyalty. Please contact any member of our staff for information on how your family can enjoy and benefit from our programs and services. POINTS OF PRIDE GRPA Agency of the Year: Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Department was recognized as 2016 Georgia Recreation and Park Association Agency of the Year. Councilman Jason Binder is excited for our city to receive this award for the eighth time since 1994! “Alpharetta is a great place to live and visit, and we are honored to have a dedicated recreation and parks agency providing high-quality park amenities, fun recreation programs, and unique special events that add to our community’s charm.”

Rock Mill Park Receives Award: Rock Mill Park, Alpharetta’s environmental park, was presented the region’s 2016 Watershed/Stormwater Project of Excellence STREAM Award by the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. This award honors projects that are environmentally friendly, thoughtful and creative, include the community, have a positive impact on the region and serve as a model for other communities. PARK AND CAPITAL PROJECTS SUMMARY

Volunteer Recognition: Connie Mashburn, a beloved local historian, was selected as the GRPA Seventh District Volunteer of the Year. Connie has provided a wealth of historical knowledge, research support, and photographic archives for the City of Alpharetta on numerous preservation projects, grant applications, and property developments. Connie’s energies have our local history well preserved and archived. Alpharetta Bike Share Program: Explore your City of Parks! Alpharetta’s Bike Share Program has been a wildly popular program providing residents and visitors a bike-friendly transportation alternative. Bike “docking” stations are located along Alpharetta’s Big Creek Greenway and Avalon for people to access. Each user must set up an account at www.zagster. com/Alpharetta. In October 2016, the City of Roswell joined in on the fun by installing Zagster bike share docking stations on portions of Roswell’s greenway trail.

Spring/Summer 2017

Wills Park: Partnering with Alpharetta Youth Baseball Association, we began construction of a large batting pavilion to include batting cages, pitching areas, and soft toss areas. Plans are underway to begin a major renovation of the City Pool and pool building. To ensure the project is finished in time for the pool to open to the public in Summer 2018, the pool will close August 1, 2017. Webb Bridge Park: Construction of a spectator seating area near the lower soccer field has begun and is expected to be complete for the spring sports season. North Park: Exterior facility improvements have been completed, including roof and gutter replacements at the concession and playground pavilion, and new exterior trim/ siding for the concession and rest room buildings. Bus barn at the Adult Activity Center was also restored and painted. Alpharetta Arts Center: The City is in the process of finalizing construction documents to renovate the old Fulton County library into a new arts center. It is anticipated that we will open the doors in Spring 2018. Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway: Boardwalk replacements have been made in various locations along the trail, and staff is working with Community Development to address storm water runoff through regrading. Congratulations to Mike Perry on his retirement at the end of 2016, after serving as Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Director for 25 years! We wish Mike all the best on his next adventure!!

SPECIAL RECOGNITION MEET RECREATION COMMISSION MEMBER MELISSA JURGENS Melissa grew up in North Carolina, where she attended UNC-Chapel Hill, receiving her degree in Political Science. She went on to obtain her law degree at the University Of North Carolina School Of Law and has been practicing law in Alpharetta since 2014. Since moving to Alpharetta with her family in 2000, Melissa has volunteered with the religious education programs and Moms’ Fellowship group at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, has served as a foster parent for Catholic Charities, and volunteered with the Milton High School Cross Country Team. Melissa has been married almost 25 years, raising three sons who are all studying at the University of Georgia. She particularly enjoys running at Wills Park on a Saturday morning, where she can take in a baseball game, a horseshow, and a game of disc golf in one loop around the park. Over the years, her family has benefitted from many of the facilities and programs offered by the Recreation and Parks Department, particularly the basketball program in which all of her children participated through the teen league. Melissa says she can’t think of anyone amongst her friends and neighbors whose lives have not been positively impacted by our city’s parks and the various programs offered by the department. Wills Park Equestrian Center

SPECIAL EVENTS Wills Park Equestrian Center is a unique feature of the Recreation and Parks Department. The center hosts a variety of events including 50 Horse Shows, 14 Dog Agility Shows, and 10 Special Events for the 2017 show season. To view or download a schedule of events, visit the City’s website at www.alpharetta.ga.us. Call 678-297-6120 for more information. Many of these events are free to the public. All events are geared to people of all ages and are held rain or shine. Dust off those boots, put on your fanciest of hats, and make plans to enjoy one of the finest show facilities in the Southeast!

HORSE SHOWS Horse Shows are the majority of events hosted at the facility. We host local GHJA and Nationally USEF-sanctioned (A) rated Hunter Jumper Horseshows. Notable horse shows include Brownwood Farms, Elite Show Jumping, Cheryl & Co., Equus Events, and the Bolshoi Benefit, all of which have hosted shows at the facility for over 25 years. Most of these shows offer free admission so bring the family and enjoy the grace and elegance of horse and rider.

The Animal Rescue Fair is one of the most unique events held at the Center. Over 5,000 people attend this event annually, one of the largest in the Southeast. This event offers a variety of rescue facilities a better way for adoptions. Additional events scheduled for 2017 include the 25th Annual North Fulton Cub Scots Day Camp, and the 3rd Annual Celebrate Freedom Rodeo offering various rodeo disciplines and vendors. We also offer a variety of Private Corporate Rentals during the calendar year.

RIDING PASS Horse owners may purchase a daily or annual riding pass and must use the facility in accordance with park and riding pass rules and regulations. Passes may be purchased at the Equestrian Center Manager’s Office.

DOG SHOWS The Dog Show schedule typically runs early spring to late fall and follows the AKC Calendar. Some notable clubs showing this year include Atlanta Obedience, 4 Paw, and Sirius Dog Agility. There are vendors at every show so be sure to bring home the best for your dog. Agility trials are races negotiated over an obstacle of jumps, tunnels, tires, weave poles, and seesaws. The dog with the least faults and best time wins. These are great shows for people who love their canine friends!
