[featured in My Cook]. Mrs. Lewis was born and raised in Nashville. She celebrated her 55th wedding anniversary with Ted Lewis on June 29, 2018. As for her working career, Mrs. Lewis once farmed with her husband. She started helping with the business after Mr. Lewis’s business partner and brother Randall died in a tragic accident in 1974. Mrs. Lewis performed such farming tasks as running tractors and combines for about a dozen years. She then began bookkeeping for Hancock Peanut Co. in 1985. She then started working as a part-time bookkeeper for Adel Steel Co. in 1989 and has been employed by that business for 29 1/2 years. She was promoted to Adel Steel’s office manager in 1994. Also in 1994, Mrs. Lewis helped take care of her son Craig, who was nearly killed when a semi hit his car head-on. The Lewises’ faith in the Lord got them through that ordeal, when a doctor told them that Craig had only a 1 percent chance of survival. Mrs. Lewis remembered telling the doctor, “You have your education and training. But you don’t know everything and I believe in miracles. Hilda Lewis has spent her entire life helping family members and promoting efforts to benefit cancer patients and end that dreaded disease among the current generations. “My mother Hilda Lewis is the most humble and caring person that I know, says her daughter Gwyn L. Thornton, who nominated Mrs. Lewis to be featured in a My Cook article. “She has given up so much to take care of others. “My brother [Craig Lewis] was in a near fatal accident, and she never left his side. She worked many years taking up donations for the Relay for Life. She is shy, but will do anything she can to help others. I’ve never heard her say anything bad about anyone. I think she would be very deserving to be

Mrs. Lewis continued to work at Adel Steel By Charles Shiver while also joining Craig for his recovery and rehab. Craig stayed in Palmyra Hospital in Albany for four months. (Mrs. Lewis drove to Dougherty County every day despite the great flood that had washed away some of the highways leading into that community.) Craig had to learn to walk and swallow/eat again, Mrs. Lewis said, adding that he remains disabled due to paralysis on his left side. Mrs. Lewis is proud to have volunteered with the Cook County Relay for Life for 18 years. She served as a local director for the American Cancer Society in Cook County from 1996 to 1997. Over the 18 years, she as an individual fundraiser collected a total of $42,095 for Relay for Life. The most she ever collected in one year was $3,264. She sent out letters and asked people to donate. Folks were excited to see each year what costume Mrs. Lewis would wear to reflect the Relay for Life’s theme. The outfits ranged from Little Red Riding Hood to an Indian maiden, from the Statue of Liberty to an umpire. She even once dressed in a poodle skirt to celebrate the 1950s theme. The Relay for Life has been discontinued in Cook County and Mrs. Lewis misses working with the fundraising effort. However, she donates money every month to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, which conducts research and offers free treatment to children suffering from cancer. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis joined and were baptized at Massee Baptist Church in November 1967. They have served as active members ever since. Mrs. Lewis also has served as president of the Young Farmers’ Wives Club and joined the Cook County Historical Society. Mrs. Lewis is the daughter of Alene Griner, 93, of Nashville and the late June Griner. The Lewises’ children are Mrs. Thornton, who substitute teaches at Cook Primary School and works with special needs children; Craig; and Ken, who manages shipping throughout the United States for MBCI/NCI. Ted and Hilda Lewis have three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
