Let us image a place that encompasses the past, the present and, most likely, a rich future. And this richness is not necessarily made of material things, but rather it lies within the local people, those who have continuously contributed to the enrichment and the progress of the city lying on the banks of river Crișul Repede and who have always been welcoming, willing to help, and with a sense of humour. Given that you already walked through the Civic Centre, the Unirii Square, the streets that pump life into the city centre and that house historical buildings, museums, schools and many other places worth seeing which are dedicated to all visitors and locals of Oradea, it may be possible that you have already been convinced by the truth of the statement above. And in order to take full advantage of the time you spend in Oradea, of the history of the place, of the events taking place on a daily basis, and of what you can find in the city and around it, you just might need to look for accommodation, as a single day is not enough for you to do all of the above. Consequently, in the following pages you are invited to discover a variety of possibilities and places where you can spend the night, hotels, hostels, aparthotels, B&Bs… We hope that the information offered about a few of the places offering accommodation included in the pages of this City Guide will be useful to you. Moreover, if you haven’t already done some research regarding this, we hereby inform you that the traditional cuisine is best suitable for exposing your taste buds to some of the most delicious and nutritious dishes. Naturally, for those who do not want to experience new tastes, there a large variety of dishes from the international cuisine. When you leaf through this issue, you will encounter some of our gastronomical recommendations. Enjoy your meal! :-) Once the two most important aspects of a trip have been set, namely accommodation and food, the meeting with the host city follows. Oradea 04
makes available for us activities and places to visit for all tastes and sizes, from historical landmarks such as the Vulturul Negru (Black Eagle) Palace, the Baroque Palace, the Justice Palace and many others, museums such as the Aurel Lazăr Memorial Museum, Iosif Vulcan Memorial Museum, Ady Endre Memorial Museum, the Military Museum, parks, churches, the Oradea Citadel, the Unirii (Union) Square, Queen Mary Theatre, the State Philharmonic, and the list can go on and on. It is worth remembering that the city houses a great number of buildings built in the Secession style, all of them representing dreams that came true, told or untold stories of famous personalities belonging to the cultural scene from Oradea, Romania or even from abroad. Moving on from what we can see and do in the city, we should also mention what lies two steps away from Oradea. We encourage you to travel through the city’s neighbouring areas in order to discover its green borders, covered in forests, the Băile Felix resort, the crater from Betfia, the small wooden churches, the Citadels and the Apuseni Mountains that are hiding, among forests and glades, numerous caves, mountain paths, birds-eye-view points and landscapes that are always unique. Romania’s 2011 green capital, which, according to statistics, offers 25 sqm of green space for each resident, welcomes tourists with wide open arms, encouraging them to discover Oradea and its surroundings both from an aesthetic point of view as well as and especially from a historical, cultural and artistic one. Having written that, we hope you will spend some quality time in Oradea, you will enjoy the most pleasant experiences and you will also come back on a different occasion. Vor fi momente artistice, culturale, Street Food pentru gurmanzii din noi, și mult iubitele artificii cu care se încheie această deja tradițională sărbătoare a orădenilor. După Toamna Orădeană ne vom putea bucura de evenimentul Wine Fest Oradea, unde băutura lui Bachus este la loc de cinste. În timpul săptămânii și nu numai, consumatorii de cultură vor avea ca obiectiv Teatrul Regina Maria. Autumn came so please cover my heart with something… Preferably with interesting events! It is good that we have a lot of events this autumn in Oradea, so we will not let ourselves fall into melancholy. The beginning of October is dedicated to the city, and we celebrate a new edition of Toamna Orădeană. There will be artistic, cultural moments, Street Food for the gourmets, and the much-loved fireworks that end this already traditional celebration of the Oradea city. After this festival we will be able to enjoy the Wine Fest event Oradea, where Bachus’s drink will be celebrated as it should. During the week and beyond, culture consumers will be able to enjoy the theater. The new season has already begun, and if you have not seen the new shows, we highly recommend them. This fall will be enriched by events!

Oradea could be called the heart of Art Nouveau in Romania. Numerous historical buildings which decorate our city proudly bear this architectural style. Next, we take a look at the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in Oradea, giving us a moment to appreciate them at their true value.

Tramvaiul de epocă
Chiar dacă nu îl vedem în fiecare zi, fiți cu ochii în patru! Tramvaiul de epocă circulă uneori în weekend sau în zilele de sărbătoare. Cu o vechime de 90 de ani, elegantul tramvai și-a primit călătorii în mai multe zile de duminică din vara anului 2017, și va ieși din nou la plimbare cu ocazia festivalului Toamna Orădeană.
Filarmonica de Stat
Corul și orchestra Filarmonicii din Oradea dau dovadă de zeci de ani dedicare. Noua stagiune a început în data de 21 septembrie, 2017. Cu un repertoriu care abordează atât preclasicii, clasicii, romanticii, cât și muzica secolului XX, Filarmonica de Stat din Oradea își continuă activitatea la fel de intens cum, probabil, era și mai demult, atunci când alți meșteri ai muzicii luau parte la acest demers. Se poate observa aceste performanțe și prin cele 40 de discuri înregistrate, invitațiile primite de peste hotare și susținerea tinerilor inițiați în tainele muzicii. 08
Vintage tram Even if we do not see it every day, keep an eye on for the vintage tram! The vintage tram runs sometimes on weekends or on holidays. Oradea Philharmonic Orchestra
The choir and the orchestra of the Philharmonic in Oradea show the decades of dedication and hard work. The new season began on September 21st, 2017. With a repertoire which addresses both pre-classics, classics, romantics and 20th-century music, Oradea Philharmonic Orchestra continues its activity probably more intensively than during the earlier years. These value of this institution can also be seen through the 40 registered discs, the invitations received from abroad, and the support a lot of young musicians received here.

Reliva este un restaurant gastronomic care oferă cea mai fină bucătărie franceză într-o ambianţă de un farmec aparte, chiar în inima Oradiei. Chef Lavinia Maier are o experienţă de 14 ani în domeniul bucătăriei, ani pe care i-a petrecut lucrând în restaurante belgiene, unde şi-a perfecţionat cunoştinţele şi tehnica.
Reliva is a gourmet restaurant that offers the finest French cuisine in a special ambience, right in the heart of Oradea. The restaurant opened in September is a family business. Chef Lavinia Maier has 14 years of experience, which she spent working in Belgian restaurants where she has improved her knowledge and techniques.
Reliva propune french cuisine, cu influenţe moderne. Toate componentele meniului şi sosurile sunt gătite exclusiv în bucătăria restaurantului. Alături de preparatele delicioase, veţi putea servi și un vin excelent care să pună în valoare gustul deosebit al mâncării. Farmecul îl reprezintă locaţia restaurantului cu o atmosferă elegantă de unde nu lipseşte muzica franţuzească ambientală. La crearea acestei atmosfere ajută şi faptul că managerul restaurantului îşi întâmpină clienţii cu profesionalism şi amabilitate, ajutându-i, pe cei care doresc, să aleagă preparatele şi băuturile.
Reliva proposes French cuisine with modern influences. All menu items and sauces are cooked exclusively in the restaurant’s kitchen. Along with the delicious food, you can also serve an excellent wine. The elegant atmosphere of this place is best represented by the French music you can hear in the background. The manager of the restaurant welcomes his clients with professionalism and courtesy, helping the ones who want to choose the dishes and drinks.
Nu putem încheia fără să menţionăm doar câteva din preparatele din meniul Reliva care ne-au făcut cu ochiul şi care ne fac poftă şi acum: brânza de capră gratinată, bisque de homar sau mușchi de vită cu spumă de foie gras și tapenada de măsline negre. Vino şi tu să ai parte de experiențe culinare inedite într-un mediu elegant și fermecător!
We can not conclude without mentioning just a few of the recipes in the Reliva menu that made us crave: gratinated goat cheese, lobster bisque or beef with foie gras and black olives tapenada. Come and enjoy a unique culinary experiences in an elegant and charming environment!

Palatul Sonnenfeld

O simplă construcție poate ascunde povești uimitoare de viață. Un exemplu ar fi întocmai construcţia care a aparţinut unei familii de evrei, Palatul Sonnenfeld. Speiegel Frigyes este arhitectul Palatului. Construcția este realizată în stil secession și ridicată între anii 1911 – 1912 de către Scherz Károly. Clădirea se întinde pe o suprafață totală mai mare de 4000 mp. Printre elementele decorative regăsite, se numără și: panouri dreptunghiulare ce includ UN medalion pe care sunt sculptați doi copii, ornamente florale, meandre spiralate și multe altele.
Sinagoga Neologă Sion
Sinagoga Sion trebuie vizitată măcar o dată în viață de către fiecare orădean. Aflată în centru, pe malul Crișului, este una dintre bijuteriile orașului și totodată, un simbol al multiculturalității noastre.
Sonnenfeld Palace
A simple construction can hide stunning life stories. An example would be the story of the Sonnenfeld Palace, which belonged to a Jewish family. Speiegel Frigyes was the architect of the Palace. The construction was built in secession style between 1911 and 1912 by Scherz Károly. The building covers over a total area of more than 4,000 sqm. Among the decorative elements there are also: rectangular panels including a medallion on which two children are carved, floral ornaments, spiral beads and many more.

The Zion Synagogue must be visited at least once in a lifetime by every habitant of this city . Located in the center, on the shores of the river Crișul Repede, it is one of the city’s jewels and, at the same time, a symbol of our multiculturalism. Cel mai mare ansamblu baroc din România este format din: Bazilica „Ridicarea la Cer a Fecioarei Maria” sau Bazilica Romano-Catolică, Șirul Canonicilor și Palatul Episcopal Romano-Catolic.
The largest Baroque ensemble in Romania consists of: “The Virgin Mary’s Heavenly Basilica” or the Roman Catholic Basilica, the Canonic Row, and the Roman Catholic Bishopric Palace.
Bazilica minor, denumită astfel în anul 1991 de către Papa Paul al II-lea, a fost construită în perioada 1752 -1780 pe actuala stradă Șirul Canonicilor, numărul 2 și este un important monument ce găzduiește un trecut istoric, artă, mister și multe alte elemente de mare importanță.
The minor basilica, so named in 1991 by Pope Paul II, was built between 1752-1780 on the Canons Street, number 2, and is an important monument that houses a historical past, art, mystery and many other elements of great importance.

Scopul Galeriei de Arte-Vizuale este acela de a promova, valorifica și vinde obiectele de artă ale tinerilor creatori de frumos, membrii ai Uniunii Artiștilor Plastici din România. Visual Arts Gallery
The Visual Arts Gallery, 15th Street, is open from Monday to Friday between 10:00 and 18:00. The purpose of the Art-Visual Gallery is to promote, valorize and sell the art objects of young beautiful artists, members of the Union of Fine Artists in Romania. Among the works of art you can find are paintings painted in oils, acrylics or watercolors; pastels; sculptures in wood, bronze or terracotta; graphic works and much more at the UAA exhibitions.

ARTA LA ORADEA / ART À LA ORADEA Cristina Haneș
este o tânără de 26 de ani, din Oradea, cu o pasiune pentru cinematografie și în special pentru regizarea documentarelor. Până acum nu vi se pare nimic ieșit din comun, probabil. Dar unul din lucrurile care o deosebește pe Cristina Haneș de alți regizori de documentare este faptul că a primit premiul „Pardino d’Oro” în cadrul consacratului Festival de la Locarno, din Elveția, ediția 2017. Premiul i-a fost acordat Cristinei pentru cel mai bun documentar internațional, „Antonio e Catarina”. Când am stat puțin de vorbă cu ea pentru a afla mai multe despre dragostea ei față de cinematografie, mi-a fost dat să descopăr unul din acei oameni rari care au o anumită strălucire în ochi când vorbesc despre pasiunea lor, și care parcă însuflețesc locul în care intră. Mi-a vorbit modest despre premiu, despre cum simte că între ea și documentarul creat există o anumită legătură aproape mistică. În momentul de față Cristina are în plan un documentar la care și lucrează cu două foste colege din cadrul masterului, o co-producție care va fi filmată în India cu o poveste care se anunță extrem de interesantă, despre care însă vom vorbi pe viitor.

Cristina tells us that: “ANA Embroideries were born out of the desire to highlight the Romanian tradition through the technique and art of hand sewing. Any item can be adorned with a hand-embroidered accessory with traditional Romanian motifs. Thus, tradition is transmitted further, and we are touched by its magic through the ornaments that we are wearing. Every nation has an identity and a story of generations from ancient times.”

Cristina Haneș
is a young 26-year-old filmmaker, from Oradea, with a passion for cinema and especially for documentaries. So far, it does not seem like anything out of the ordinary, probably. But one of the things which distinguishes Cristina Haneş from other documentary filmmakers is that she received the “Pardino d’Oro” award at the well known Festival of Locarno, Switzerland, during the 2017 edition. The award was given to Cristina for the best international documentary: “Antonio e Catarina”. When I met her to find out more about her love for cinematography, I was given to discover one of those rare persons who have a certain glow in their eyes when they talk about their passion, and who seem to enliven the place in which they enter. She talked with modesty about the prize, about how she feels that there is some mystical connection between her and the documentary. Currently, Cristina is working at a documentary together with two former MA colleagues, a co production that will be filmed in India with a very interesting subject, but we will talk about it in the future.

LACUL VIDA Cu siguranță ați avut una din acele zile când vă doriți să vă închideți telefonul, să mergeți undeva în natură și să vă bucurați de câteva momente de liniște. Ei bine, am o recomandare pentru cei care se află într-o asemenea situație, din propria mea experiență.
VIDA LAKE You certainly had one of those days when you want to hang up your phone, go somewhere far and enjoy some moments of peace. Well, I have a recommendation for those who are in such a situation, from my own experience.
Într-o zi frumoasă de duminică am reușit să merg cu un grup de On a beautiful Sunday, I managed to go with a group of friends prieteni până la bucățica de Paradis care se numește Lacul Vida. to the small paradise called Vida Lake. It only took us one hour to get there. Drumul nu a durat mai mult de o oră. Lacul Vida este un lac de acumulare artificial, din comuna Dobrești, în apropiere de localitatea Luncasprie. Acesta este format în urma construcției unui baraj cu anrocamente, înalt de 10 m și lung de aproximativ 70 m. Atracția principală este deversorul în formă de pâlnie din lac. Suprafața lacului reflectă pădurea de pe margine și face ca peisajul să fie unul de poveste. Deversorul este sub formă de pâlnie, și creează un efect vizual superb, care duce vag cu gândul la renumitul Baraj Conchos, din Lagoa Comprida, Portugalia. Deversorul, împreună cu barajul, au scopul de menține nivelul apei mai scăzut, pe timp ploios. Lacul datează din 1967. Apa are o culoare turcoaz, și da, e ca în poze, chiar mai frumoasă. No filter, no make-up. Dacă aveți chef și de o scurtă expediție, puteți merge pe lângă firul apei, și ajungeți la izvor. Lake Vida is an artificial reservoir lake in Dobreşti, near Luncasprie. It was built using a dam with rocks, having 10 m height and about 70 m length. The main attraction is the funnel-shaped spillway of the lake. The surface of the lake reflects the image of the forest on , creating a fairytale landscape. The spillway is has a funnel form, and creates a superb visual effect, which reminds vaguely of the famous Conchos Barrage in Lagoa Comprida, Portugal. The spillway, along with the barrage, aim to keep a low water level during rainy weather. The lake was artificially made in 1967. The water has a turquoise color, and yes, it’s like in pictures, even more beautiful. No filter, no make-up. If you’re in the mood for a short expedition, you can walk along the water line and get to the spring. Above, there is a cave that you can visit if you only have some climbing skills. There are nearly 300 caves in the area, so you can do it with the explorer. It is full of greenery, forest, fresh air. It is also possible to fish in the lake area, and several trails can be made in the area, and besides the spring, the Vida Gorge is another tourist destination worth visiting.

VÂRFUL BIHORUL La doi pași de Oradea se mai află și Vârful Bihorul. Acesta este cel mai înalt punct al Munților Apuseni, de asemenea fiind cunoscut drept Vârful Curcubăta Mare, având o altitudine de 1849 de metri. Este situat la limita dintre județele Bihor și Alba, iar turiștii sunt din ce în ce mai interesați de acest vârf, întrucât panorama descrisă este superbă, întrucât, în zilele senine, se poate vedea chiar și la 40 de km distanță, până în orașul Ștei.

Diferența de nivel dintre stațiunea Arieșeni și vârful Bihorul este de 900 de metri, iar urcarea pe jos durează aproximativ patru ore și jumătate, prilej pentru a culege fructe de pădure și a fotografia cât mai multe peisaje minunate.
The hikers of the mountain trails have several options that can reach Bihorul Peak, but the most popular route is the one that starts from the Arieseni resort, in Alba County. From here, it takes about one kilometer on the national road, same direction as Vârtop, after which there is a left turn, through the village of Galbena, from where the hiker has to follow the blue stripe. Ingrediente: ulei de măsline, 1 ceapa medie, 1 lingura de chimen, usturoi, 2 cutii de fasole neagră, 2 cești de bulion, sare si piper. Se topește ceapa în ulei de măsline. Când ceapa devine translucidă, adăugați chimen. Gătiți 30 de secunde, apoi adăugați usturoiul și gătiți-l timp de 30-60 de secunde. Adăugați fasolea, amestecând ocazional până la fierbere și amestecați condimentele după gust. Serviți supa cu boluri de ceapă roșie.
Black bean soup
Ingredients: olive oil, 1 onion, 1 tablespoon of cumin, garlic, 2 cans of black beans, 2 cups of broth, salt and pepper. Melt onion in olive oil. When the onion becomes translucent, add the cumin. Cook for 30 seconds, then add the garlic and cook for 30-60 seconds. Add the beans, stirring occasionally until boiled and stir the spices. Serve soup with bowls of red onion.
Sorbet de cafea
De ce aveți nevoie pentru a prepara un sorbet de cafea? Simplu: 250 ml cafea, zahăr după gust, 1 lingură coniac (sau lichior de cafea), 200 ml smântână pentru frișcă, 1 lingura zahăr pudră, 1 zahăr vanilat. În cafeaua pe care o îndulcim după gust, adăugați coniacul și amestecați. Acoperiți vasul cu folie, și îl lăsați la congelator pentru 3 ore, timp în care la intervale de 30 de minute, scoateți vasul și amestecați, pentru a sparge gheața. După cele 3 ore, scoteți vasul și așezați sorbetul de cafea în pahare în straturi, alternând cu frișca bătută cu zahărul vanilat.
Coffee sorbet
What do you need to make a coffee sorbet? Simple: 250 ml coffee, sugar, 1 tablespoon of cognac (or coffee liqueur), 200 ml whipped cream, 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar, 1 vanilla sugar. In the sweetened coffee , add the cognac and stir. Cover the dish with a foil, and leave it in the freezer for 3 hours. At 30-minute intervals, remove the dish and mix to break the ice. After 3 hours, take out the pot and place the coffee sorbet in layers, in a glass, alternating with the whipped cream that was stirred with vanilla sugar. 20

Ne-am gândit să vă punem la dispoziție un scurt ghid despre cum să recunoaștem un stilurile arhitecturale din Oradea. În această ediției a revistei vom prezenta primul stil arhitectural, dar stați cu ochii pe edițiile viitoare pentru a afla care sunt celelalte stiluri și care sunt caracteristicile lor.

Dacă vorbim despre biserici, puțin deasupra ușii e nelipsitul fronton, turla bisericii este foarte bogat decorată (uneori prezintă o umflatura numită bulb de ceapă) și pilaștrii (acele coloane false integrate direct în construcție) cu scop pur decorativ. La interior domină pictura ce prezintă multiple personaje înfăptuind minuni sau acțiuni eroice, podoabe de aur și nelipsitele vitralii multicolore. În Oradea avem câteva exemple de biserici, cum ar fi Biserica cu Lună, Biserica Sfântul Ladislau, Catedrala Sfântul Nicolae, respectiv întreg Complexul Baroc.
The style is based on grandiose buildings, with multiple decorations both on the inside and on the outside. If we are taking as an example the churches, we notice how just above the door there is always a fronton, the tower of the church is richly decorated (sometimes with a bulge called bulb onion) and the pillars (those fake columns directly integrated into the construction) are for purely decorative purposes. Indoors dominate paintings that feature multiple characters performing miracles or heroic actions, golden adornments and unmistakable stained-glass windows. In Oradea we have some examples of churches, such as the Church with the Moon, the Church of Saint Ladislau, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, and the entire Baroque Complex.
