This project explores producing environments using a mixture of AI techniques, including: generative adversarial networks (Artbreeder), world building tools (Blender & Rhino), and hand-drawn illustrations. A series of alien landscapes are produced, expressed as an isometric interpretation of an AI-generated perspective scene. In this way, in a visual call and response structure, each Artbreeder landscape acts as a “creative prompt for the design of imaginary world in isometric. The artbreeder images inspired a narrative about fronterism, following cowboys and native american travelers exploring the alien wildlands. The landscape presented on the left is Canyon, a large salt flat penetrated by steep canyons and surrounded by a shallow swamp. The canyon has harsh sunlight that creates stark shadows and walls carved by the water over time. In this scene, travelers scout the surrounding maze-like area.

Arch

Arch Illustration

The landscape presented on the left is Arch, characterized by a series of 4 large arches that form a tunnel surrounded by a rock desert outpost with large organic spikes rising out of the ground. This Artbreeder image was more abstract than Canyon so my inspiration for this image was based on the central arch form, the spikes that rise out of the ground, and my intepretations of the corrolations between the colors and form. In this scene, a group of native american travelers have arrived at the end of the tunnel and are resting after their journey. However, they will be soon met by a lone native american scout chased by a group of agrresive cowboys, due to land disputes. It seems even in thie foreign land, various groups of power have risen and are in conflict over the right to settle the land. Artbreeder Image

Flora

Flora Illustration

The landscape presented on the left is Flora, characterized by a large grassy plains bordering a dense bioluminscent forest. This Artbreeder image was chaotic and had a lot of different elements all happening at once. While I clearly saw a forest, intepreting this scene in isometric would be difficult as displaying all the detail while incorporating the detailed human figures would be a challenge. As such, I chose to illustrate the conditions at the edge of the forest, questioning what existed beyond the boundaries of the forest rather than what the forest itself was. In this scene, a lone native american traveler has been traversing the grassy oceans and has norw arrived at the flora jungle. After a long journey he finally arrives at the elusive jungle. The forest beckons him to come closer, just one more step the forest says. Perhaps the forest is hiding a far more alluring and dangerous side.

Hive

Hive Illustration

The landscape presented on the left is Hive, characterized a monolithic organic hive structure, enveloped by clusters of alien eggs emitting a bright yet eerie light, and surrounded by a singular path dominated by pools of acid water discharging hazy steam that blurs visibility. The artbreeder image displayed a large structure surrounding a bright light source amid a charred wasteland. I interpreted the image as having a fantastical ethereal quality of light and quickly pictured the idea of a bioluminescent hive. As the last in the series of illustrations, I wanted this illustration to demonstrate a quality of finality, that the journey embarked upon starting with canyons would end here, with a final confrontation with whatever resides within the hive. As our travelers approach the hive, they feel a sense of dread upon confronting the unknown within the ghastly organic fortress beyond.

The landscape presented here is a pen and ink drawing of a small shanty town on the ocean that was later digitally colored and retouched on Procreate. The drawing takes inspiration from the background art and aesthetic of shows like The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and Adventure Time. For this piece, I wanted to utilize the seaside atmosphere to the fullest by adding in environmental details like the mist illuminated by the lights of the buildings or adding in a darker layer behind the buildings and the front section of wooden planks to give depth and dimensionality. I focused on adding a lot of small details to give the piece a sense of life and history, like the cat sleeping on the window still or the shady alleyway below the overpass connecting the two buildings. As for color selection, I focused tried to stick to a simple red-maroon colorway with green highlights.

Poprock’s Metropolis

Final Illustration

This project was a comission by a Superman fan who wanted to have a visual interpretation of his reimagining of Metropolis in an Atomic Punk heavy alternate reality. The intent was to design a city in the atomic-punk aesthetic, resulting in floating hot rod cars with exposed piping and flashy forms, stark high rising architecture forming a shining cityscape, and a reimagining of downtown space use and the exchange between urban and natural landscapes. For this project, I decided to photobash the cityscene so I could work off that for lighting and form decisions. Other details like the train and all of the vehicles on the road were incredibly fun to ideate, playing around with unique vehicular forms was an interesting challenge, I decided to stick with the pastel heavy color, a result of playing around with different filtering options.

Watching A Dream This collection of digital works is called Watching a Dream, a series of stylized illustrations inspired by personal photography of moments between people and intimate architectural conditions. This is a project inspired by fonder memories of enjoying the outdoors and built spaces of pre quarantine and pre Covid-19. The project began as a design exercise. I had a lot of photography from my travels but didn’t know what to do with it so I began using them as references for this series, for lighting and form. With my architectural training in mind, I thought it would be interesting to reverse the standard model of creating a render then building that structure. Instead, i wanted to reimagine these real places in a stylized aesthetic to convey how I felt about those moments. Hopefully, my work is also able to capture a dreamlike atmosphere and whisk the viewer away to another world, even if temporarily. Here I have presented a selection of my favorite pieces from this collection. To see the others and color variants of the pieces shown here, please visit- https://www.glowho3.com/watchingadream

The Machine

Exterior Night Render

The Machine a unique mixed use industrial and commercial recreational use building. An intervention of an existing furniture making space, Ohio Design, which introduces the programming and utilities of Southern Pacific Brewery, a popular brewery located next door. The building is divided into 3 parts: the left most being Ohio Design with a large industrial work space, the middle being the machine that houses the administrative spaces as well as the storage and distribution mechanisms that house all raw and finished goods and materials for both businesses, and the right most being Souther Pacific Brewery with its seating areas, kitchen, and brewery area. The central machine is both a visual demonstration as well as an efficient and alternative way of thinking about space management. Although this is an architecture project, I wanted to include it because I am proud of the finished concept and the renders and drawings I produced displays my architectural training and abilities. I’ve included some of my favorite drawings from this project. My drawings should convey the level of detail I can achieve on projects that require a certain degree of research or believability and realism, especially on architecture or other urban forms.
