F

or the holidays this past season,

Walton Music made a contribution on behalf of our composers, conductors, and friends to the Springfield Street Choir, a choir in Springfield, Missouri, made up of singers who are currently or formerly homeless or experiencing extreme poverty. We felt that it was time to forgo the traditional holiday card and use the money that would’ve been spent to make a difference in some way. The donated funds were used immediately to purchase t-shirts for the choir—something that sounds so simple to you and me, but helped to bring a sense of dignity and identity to the singers. There has been a surge in recent years of works and programs centered around social justice. To me, 2020 feels like it is going to be all about telling important stories and making a difference in each of our communities. Isn’t it incredible that through music we can offer healing, we can educate, and we can encourage people to come together? I see these themes weaving through many of the new works in our 2020 release: No Color by Stacey Gibbs and Shawn Kirchner (race); Shelter this Candle by Connor Koppin (unity); Nature Boy arranged by Anders Edenroth (love); The Promised Land by Ken Burton (civil rights); Spes by Mia Makaroff (hope); Healing Heart by Jacob Narverud (healing); Threads of Joy by Tim Brent and Amanda Quist (resilience); Lie Light, Dear Heart by Kenneth and Kirsten Lampl (grief ); Remember the Children by Kyle Pederson (mental health); Excuse Me, I Don’t Understand by Ivo Antognini (equality); along with many more. This year, sing these important stories. Sing them to your communities, your churches, your schools. As Michael Engelhardt states in his new work I Will Sing, “Darkness and fear abound, but this song keeps calling out, so with all of my soul, I will sing.” Thank you for the difference you make through this awesome art of choral music. Best wishes for an amazing 2020! Susan LaBarr Editor, Walton Music

Excuse Me, I Don’t Understand

Ivo Antognini Text by Josiane Haas Translation by Eric Nelson From a set of songs commissioned by the Swiss Association of Children’s and Youth Choirs to promote ideas of environmentalism and peace. An extremely poignant text that exlaims, “Excuse me, I don’t understand!” in terms of world hunger, violence, and growing old. Originally in French, now available in English. SA with Piano, Violin, and Cello WW1837 - $2.85

Fresh and Fearless

Daniel Elder Text by Sara Teasdale Daniel Elder’s Fresh and Fearless is a special and unusual take on the idea of spring. The driving piano part captures the energy and wonder of the new beginnings of the season. Excellent vocal writing that is simple in its construction but complex in its sound. Andrew Crane Choral Series SSAA with Piano WW1797 - $2.95

I’m On My Way

arr. Anthony Trecek-King Rhythmic, driving, and intense, I’m On My Way is a rich selection for two-part treble choruses. A lesser-known spiritual speaking to themes of home, journey, and trial. An accessible and dynamic arrangement now available in SA voicing. Cameron LaBarr Choral Series SA with Piano WW1825 - $2.75

Joy

Thomas Juneau Text by Sara Teasdale Joy is taken from the three-song set by Thomas Juneau, The Song Maker. This exhuberant work captures the euphoria one feels at the joy of being loved. A rhythmic yet unhurried piano accompaniment enhances beautiful and soaring vocal lines. Will work well for young treble choirs, but is sophisticated enough to work for all levels. SSA with Piano WW1786 - $2.55

Lie Light, Dear Heart

Kenneth Lampl and Kirsten Lampl Text by Mark Twain Warm summer sun, shine kindly here… These stunning words by Mark Twain have been set here by Kenneth and Kirsten Lampl in a highly melodic work. For SSAA choirs, this setting offers both homophonic choral writing and counterpoint, providing many excellent teaching opportunities. This will be a lovely work for any program, but will be particularly good for memorials and remembrances. SSAA with Piano WW1803 - $2.65

The Peace of Wild Things

Sean Ivory Text by Wendell Berry While many settings of this Wendell Berry text exsist, perhaps none capture its essence as beautifully as this work by Sean Ivory.
