Publisher of the World’s Greatest Cartoonists Since 1976

“Fantagraphics Books consistently puts out intelligent comics… and people could certainly use a larger selection of this sort of serious, innovative stuff.” —The Washington Post

Fantagraphics Books has been a leading proponent of comics as a legitimate form
of art and literature since it began publishing the critical trade magazine The Comics Journal in 1976. By the early 1980s, Fantagraphics found itself at the forefront of a burgeoning movement to establish comics as a medium as eloquent and expressive as the more established popular arts of film, literature, poetry, et al. Fantagraphics quickly established a reputation as an advocacy publisher that specialized in seeking out and publishing the kind of innovative work that traditional comics corporations who dealt almost exclusively in super-heroes and fantasy either didn’t know existed or wouldn’t touch: serious, dramatic, historical, journalistic, political, and satirical work by a new generation of alternative cartoonists as well as many artists who gained prominence as part of the seminal underground comix movement of the ’60s. Fantagraphics has since gained an international reputation for its literate and audacious editorial standards and its exacting production values. The work of our authors have continued to gain commercial momentum and critical recognition over the last 30 years by combining the social relevance of the previous generation of underground comix artists, an attention to personal and psychological veracity, and formal experimentation and innovation. Ask your sales rep for a copy of our complete backlist catalog, featuring hundreds of contemporary graphic novels. This catalog describes books to be published from April 2011through August 2011 (plus select recent and backlist titles); prices, release dates, and covers are subject to change. Fantagraphics Books publishes several fine periodicals in addition to the books distributed by W.W. Norton & Co. These are distributed by Diamond Comics Distributors (Timonium, MD) and Last Gasp (San Francisco, CA). For information on these, as well as wholesale discounts and library subscriptions, contact Martin Bland at Fantagraphics Books.

Fantagraphics Books is on the forefront of viral promotion and distribution of multimedia assets (video previews, book pages, online exclusive content and photo galleries) for all of our titles via fantagraphics.com and online social networks (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, Flickr, Goodreads, etc.). DUNGEON QUEST BOOK TWO april

by Joe Daly $12.99 Paperback Original • Territory: E COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS / Fantasy • CQ: 24 136 pages, black-and-white, 6" x 8 ¼" ISBN 978-1-60699-436-8

WHAT IF CHEECH & CHONG LIVED IN AN RPG? In 2010’s Dungeon Quest Book One, Millennium Boy decided to grab his hobo stick, his bandana, and his Swiss Army knife, bid his mom goodbye, and head off on a quest for adventure. Joined by his best friend Steve (weapon: baseball bat; clothing: wife beater, cargo pants and sandals), the muscle-bound Lash Penis, and the silent but deadly Nerdgirl, he began a mystical quest to find the missing parts of the Atlantean Resonator Guitar. In this second book, our heroes continue their quest by wandering through the primeval gloom of Fireburg Forest in search of the prophet and poet Bromedes, who can unlock the mysteries of Atlantis for them. Along the way, they encounter giant spiders, river trolls, and copious amounts of killer weed. Joe Daly’s delightfully unique stoner/philosopher dialogue and distinctive character designs, coupled with hilarious overthe-top Role Playing Game action (complete with periodic updates for each character’s status in ten criteria, including “dexterity,” “intelligence,” and “money”), propel Daly’s story into heretofore unachieved action-comedy heights.

JOE DALY was born in London and lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

“What an oddly delightful little book [Dungeon Quest] is, a mash-up of Dungeons & Dragons-type adventuring and stoner attitude ... Based on the strengths of this introductory volume... I’m willing to go where the adventure leads.”— Chris Mautner, Robot 6 “Above all else, Daly is funny, and never pursues cheap laughs. His line mixes clear-line simplicity with occasional psychedelic weirdness; bending the borders of reality is a trademark of his narratives. When Daly lays down a genre story over this template, the resulting stories are enjoyable on several levels.” — Rob Clough, The Comics Journal “Daly’s parody of the trek adventure — the template for ripping yarns from King Solomon’s Mines to King Kong to Indy Jones to scads of video games — is a kind of slackers’ SpongeBob Squarepants, earthier (of course) but as ingenuously absurd... [and] magnetically amusing.” — Ray Olson, Booklist

A GRAPHIC NOVEL BIOGRAPHY OF A BASEBALL LEGEND AND LATIN AMERICAN HERO The biographical 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente is a human drama of courage, faith and dignity, inspired by the life of baseball star Roberto Clemente. No other baseball player dominated the 1960s like Roberto Clemente and no other Latin American player achieved his numbers. Born in 1924 in Puerto Rico, Clemente excelled in track and field and loved baseball. By the age of 17 he was playing in the PR Winter league. Spotted by the big-league scouts because of his hitting, fielding, and throwing abilities, he joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1954. A fierce competitor, within two seasons he was hitting above .300 consistently. He played like a man possessed, fielding superbly, unleashing his rifle arm, and hitting in clutch situations. Despite his aesthetic brilliance, he faced prejudice throughout his career and was given his due only after his unexpected and tragic death in a 1972 plane crash. Although baseball was his obsession, Clemente never lost sight of his dreams and his greater responsibilities outside the game. This sense of urgency is what came to define him beyond that of a grand athlete. His eventual success and accompanying celebrity gave him the opportunity to engage his conscience in public life. He died when his plane went down in the Caribbean Sea on a relief mission to earthquake-torn Nicaragua that he personally directed. 21 chronicles Clemente’s life from his early days growing up in rural Puerto Rico, the highlights of his career (including the 1960s World Series where he helped the Pirates win its first victory in 33 years, and his 3000th hit in 1972 during the last official at-bat of his life) as well as his private life and public mission off the field. After his death, Major League Baseball declared September 18 to be “Roberto Clemente Day,” and in 1999, Pittsburgh’s Sixth Street Bridge was renamed the Roberto Clemente Bridge in honor of the greatest Latino ballplayer in history. Wilfred Santiago captures the grit of Clemente’s rise from his impoverished Puerto Rican childhood, to the majesty of his performance on the field, to his fundamental decency as a human being in a drawing style that combines realistic attention to detail and expressive cartooning.

Wilfred Santiago was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He now lives in Chicago. View the 21 trailer at 21comix.com.

“Merely calling Jim Woodring’s comics surreal is selling them short. …Woodring’s vivid draftsmanship and narrative linearity operate just as easily as parable, gospel, and even slapstick. …Weathercraft… pushes his iconography and storytelling into new areas of grotesquerie and revelation, all without his characters uttering a word.” — Jason Heller, The A.V. Club

“[Weathercraft is a] book that sticks with you like a virus, Woodring's newest collection of tales of vague morality and definite oddity keeps intact his status as one of comics most eccentric auteurs. ...Woodring's wordless story is a looping and circumstantial affair, concerned more with fantastically rendered backgrounds — his starkly layered landscapes play like minimalist woodcuts of the deepest unconscious — than matters of plot and story. There is a creeping message of sorts, about the wages of greed and what happens to curious cats, but it's mired in a universe of deeply strange beauty and not always easy to divine.” — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) “It’s all even stranger than [the] description makes it sound, but Woodring manages to make it all somehow convincing and compelling. There’s a consistent internal logic at work, and his cartoony-but-detailed drawing style, loaded with surreal imagery (think Walt Disney meets Carlos Castaneda) is the ideal vehicle to convey this hauntingly peculiar tale. And if it doesn’t all make perfect — or even imperfect — sense, its mysteries and subtleties reward repeat readings. Over the past two decades Woodring has created a dense and distinctive universe, and Weathercraft is perhaps its most rewarding portrayal yet.” — Booklist

the first full-length “frank” graphic novel! Readers of the “Frank” stories know that The Unifactor is in control of everything that happens to the characters that abide there, and that however extreme the experiences they undergo may be, in the end nothing really changes. That goes treble for Frank himself, who is kept in a state of total ineducability by the unseen forces of that haunted realm. And so the question arises: what would happen if Frank were to leave The Unifactor? That question is answered in Congress of the Animals, Jim Woodring's muchanticipated second full-length graphic novel, and first starring his signature character Frank. In this gripping saga an act of casual rudeness sets into motion a chain of events which propels Frank into a world where he is on his own at last; and like so many who leave home, Frank finds himself contending with realities of which he had no previous inkling. In Congress of the Animals we are treated to the pitiful spectacle of Frank losing his house, taking a factory job, falling in with bad company, fleeing the results of sabotage, escaping the Unifactor in an amusement park ride, surviving a catastrophe at sea, traveling across hostile terrain toward a massive temple seemingly built in his image, being treated roughly by gut-faced men and intervening in an age-old battle in a meadow slathered in black and yellow blood. And when he finally knocks on opportunity's door he finds... he finds... Suffice to say he finds what most of us would like to find. Can he bring it back with him? Will the Unifactor accept him as he has become? Are his sins forgiven? Is love real? Is this the end of Frank as we know him? The answer, my friend, is blowin’ into bookstores in April, 2011. JIM WOODRING lives in Seattle, WA, where he was recently awarded the 2010 Stranger Genius Award for literature for his recent graphic novel, Weathercraft. It was the first wordless novel to receive the award.

A VISUAL AND ORAL HISTORY OF THE “SEATTLE SOUND” Taking Punk to the Masses: From Nowhere to Nevermind and Beyond visually documents the explosion of Grunge, the Seattle Sound, within the context of the underground punk subculture that was developing throughout the U.S. in the late 1970s and 1980s. The book serves as a companion and contextual backdrop to the Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses exhibition, which opens at Seattle’s Experience Music Project in 2011. This decade-and-a-half musical journey will be represented entirely through the lens of EMP’s oral history and permanent object collection, an invaluable and rich cultural archive of over 800 interviews and 140,000 objects — instruments, costumes, posters, records and other ephemera dedicated to the pursuit of rock ’n’ roll. Taking Punk to the Masses focuses on 100 key objects from EMP’s permanent collection that illustrate the evolution of punk rock from underground subculture to the mainstream embrace (and subsequent underground rejection) of Grunge. These objects are put into context by the stories of those who lived it, culling from EMP’s vast archive of oral histories with such Northwest icons as Mudhoney’s Mark Arm, cartoonist Peter Bagge, design legend Art Chantry, Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson, Sub Pop founders Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman, the Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, photographer Charles Petersen, Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, and dozens of others. From the Northwest’s earliest punk bands like The Wipers, to proto-grunge bands of the 1980s like Green River, Melvins and Malfunkshun, through the heady 1990s when bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney rose to the national stage and popularized alternative music, Taking Punk to the Masses is the first definitive history of one of America’s most vibrant music scenes, as told by the participants who helped make it so, and through the artifacts that survive. Over the past 15 years, Experience Music Project has amassed over 800 filmed oral history interviews with musicians, producers, club owners, fans, and others associated with every genre of music. These interviews, along with the museum’s massive artifact collection, form the basis for every exhibition. The exhibition Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses includes footage from over 100 interviews. A selection of those interviews are included in a DVD, exclusive to the Taking Punk to the Masses book.

JACOB McMURRAY is the Senior Curator of Seattle’s Experience Music Project.

“Fantagraphics has won numerous awards for this series and they deserve them all for creating such a wonderful archive of this American treasure. This series is a must have for any Peanuts fan and can be enjoyed by the whole family. I wouldn’t miss a volume.” — Rich Clabaugh, The Christian Science Monitor Named one of the top 10 “Comics Archives and Anthologies of the Decade” (2000-2009) by Omnivoracious (Amazon.com) “Peanuts always had a bite to it; Schulz’s favorite source of comedy was the anxieties and humiliations of childhood. Still, some of these strips are unnervingly bitter even for him, as when Marcie destroys Snoopy’s doghouse in a rage, then screams at Peppermint Patty that she needs to 'face up to reality.' It provokes laughter, of course, but shocked laughter: you can tell these kids aren’t going to grow up happy.” — Douglas Wolk, New York Times Sunday Book Review

IT’S 1980, CHARLIE BROWN… AND PEPPERMINT PATTY IS WEARING CORN-ROWS! PLUS A STRANGE ROMANCE... Charles Schulz enters his fourth decade as the greatest cartoonist of his generation, and Peanuts remains as fresh and lively as it ever was. (How do we know it’s 1980? Well, for one thing Peppermint Patty gets herself those Bo-Derek-in-“10” cornrows — Peanuts’ timelessness occasionally shows a crack!) That said, The Complete Peanuts 1979-1980 includes a number of classic storylines, including the month-long sequence in which an ill Charlie Brown is hospitalized (including a particularly spooky moment when he wonders if he’s died and nobody’s told him yet), and an especially eventful trek with Snoopy, Woodstock, and the scout troop (now including a little girl bird, Harriet). And Snoopy is still trying on identities left and right, including the “world-famous surveyor,” the “world-famous census taker,” and Blackjack Snoopy, the riverboat gambler. In other extended stories, Snoopy launches an ill-fated airline (with Lucy as the agent, Linus as the luggage handler, and Marcie as what it was still OK then to call the stewardess)… Peppermint Patty responds to being leaked upon by a ceiling by hiring a lawyer (unfortunately, she again picks Snoopy)… plus one of the great, forgotten romances of Peanuts that will startle even long-time Peanuts connoisseurs: Peppermint Patty and…“Pig-Pen”?! CHARLES M. SCHULZ was born in Minnesota in 1922 and passed away in 2000. His work lives on at Charles M. Schulz Museum & Research Center in Santa Rosa, CA, where his widow Jean is President.

“Republishing Peanuts in one gorgeous volume after another is really the first time we can truly take a step back, appreciate Schulz's work as a whole and ultimately wrap our arms around the accomplishment of Charles Schulz. Sometimes, happiness is a warm book.” — The Huffington Post

THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, NOW IN PAPERBACK During WW II, the closest most Americans ever came to combat was through the cartoons of Bill Mauldin, the most beloved enlisted man in the U.S. Army. This new paperback edition of the 2008 two-volume, deluxe hardcover set brings together Mauldin’s complete works from 1940 through the end of the war under one cover. This collection of over 600 cartoons, most never before reprinted, is more than the record of a great artist: it is an essential chronicle of America’s citizen-soldiers from peace through war to victory. Bill Mauldin knew war because he was in it. He had created his characters, Willie and Joe, at age 18, before Pearl Harbor, while training with the 45th Infantry Division and cartooning part-time for the camp newspaper. His brilliant send-ups of officers were pure infantry, and the men loved it. Mauldin’s cartoons and captions recreated on paper the fully realized world of the American combat soldier. Willie & Joe is edited by Todd DePastino, Mauldin’s official biographer. Willie & Joe contains an introduction and running commentary by DePastino, providing context for the drawings, pertinent biographical details of Mauldin’s life, and occasional background on specific cartoons (such as the ones that made Patton howl).

Born in 1921, BILL MAULDIN squeezed several lifetimes into his 81 years. In addition to cartooning, he acted in Hollywood movies, ran for Congress, piloted airplanes, wrote several books and hundreds of articles, and won two Pulitzer Prizes, the first for his wartime cartoons. He died on January 22, 2003. TODD DePASTINO is the author of Citizen Hobo: How a Century of Homelessness Shaped America (2003). He also edited and introduced a lost classic, The Road by Jack London (2006). His biography of Mauldin, titled Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front, was published by W.W. Norton in fall 2007. He teaches history and writes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“Mauldin’s characters were bluntly honest: War was dirty, absurd, bitter hard work.” — Todd Leopold, CNN

“This compilation of his cartoons helps bring Mauldin’s talent and his life at the front lines both to historians and a new generation.” — ARMY Magazine

“These gritty, existential cartoons — everything Mauldin published during the war that still exists is compiled her — are the real deal and then some.” — Laurel Maury, NPR.org

“Bill Mauldin was my first artist hero, and Willie & Joe: The WWII Years reminds me why.” — Steven Heller, The New York Times Book Review

“The cartoonist’s humanistic brush paints a sober picture of war that a news camera can never achieve. These GIs resonate with real pathos; each cartoon, however jocular, emanates weariness and resignation.” — Print Magazine

WWII’S MOST FAMOUS SOLDIERS RETURN FROM THE FRONTLINES In the summer of 1945, a great tide of battered soldiers began flowing back to the United States from around the globe. Though victorious, these exhausted men were nevertheless too grief-stricken over the loss of comrades, too guiltridden that they had survived, and too numbed by trauma to share in the country’s euphoria. Most never saw a ticker-tape parade, or stole a Times Square kiss. All they wanted was to settle back into quiet workaday lives without fear. How tragic that the forces unleashed by World War II made this simple wish impossible. Willie & Joe: Back Home brilliantly chronicles the struggles and disillusionments of these early postwar years and, in doing so, tells Bill Mauldin’s own extraordinary story of his journey home to a wife he barely knew and a son he had only seen in pictures. The drawings capture the texture and feel, the warp and woof, of this confusing time: the ubiquitous hats and cigarettes, the domestic rubs, the rising fear of another war, and new conflicts over Civil Rights, civil liberties, and free speech. This second volume of Fantagraphics’ series reprinting Mauldin’s greatest work identifies and restores the dozens of cartoons censored by Mauldin’s syndicate for their attacks on racial segregation and McCarthy-style “witch hunts.” Mauldin pleaded with his syndicate to let him out of his contract so that he could return to the simple quiet life so desired by Willie & Joe. The syndicate refused, so Mauldin did battle, as always, through pen and ink.

SPECTACULAR FAUX-WOODCUT VISTAS MAKE TARDI’S GROUNDBREAKING “ICEPUNK” STORY A RETRO CLASSIC In its ongoing quest to showcase the wide range of Jacques Tardi’s bibliography, Fantagraphics reaches all the way back to one of his earliest, and most distinctive graphic novels: A satirical, Jules Vernes-esque “retro-sci-fi” yarn executed on scratchboard in a stunningly detailed faux-woodcut style perfectly chosen to render the Edwardian-era mechanical marvels on display. Created in 1972, The Arctic Marauder is a downright prescient example of proto-“steampunk” science fiction — or perhaps more accurately, and to coin a spinoff genre, “icepunk.” In 1899, “L’Anjou,” a ship navigating the Arctic Ocean from Murmansk, Russia, to Le Havre, France comes across a stunning sight: A ghostly, abandoned vessel perched high atop an iceberg. But exploring this strange apparition is the last thing the sailors will ever do, as their own ship is soon dispatched to Davy Jones’ locker via a mysterious explosion. Enter Jérôme Plumier, whose search for his missing uncle, the inventor Louis-Ferdinand Chapoutier, brings him into contact with the sinister, frigid forces behind this — and soon he too is headed towards the North Pole, where he will content with mad scientists, monsters of the deep, and futuristic submarines and flying machines. Told with brio in hilarious slabs of vintage purple prose, The Arctic Marauder works both as ripping good adventure story and parody of same, and, predating as it does the later and not dissimilar Adèle Blanc-Sec series, is a keystone in Tardi’s oeuvre in his fantastical mode.

Jacques Tardi lives and work in Paris, France. He is currently hard at work on his next graphic novel, his fourth adaptation of a Jean-Patrick Manchette crime thriller.

TWO PERENNIAL CLASSICS, BACK IN PRINT! Back in print after a several year absence and with R. Crumb’s popularity higher than ever in the wake of the bestselling R. Crumb’s Genesis, these two volumes of The Complete Crumb Comics showcase several key years in Crumb’s career. Vol. 13 showcases the late 1970s, when Crumb’s character the Snoid first appeared. That Crumb creation is a devilish imp, all id and no conscience, that some say is an alter ego of Crumb. Other highlights here include early collaborations with the late Harvey Pekar and a color section of covers Crumb drew for records by old-time blues and jazz musicians that beautifully convey his nostalgia for America’s musical past. It also includes one of Crumb’s most acclaimed works, “A Short History of America,” whose 12 panels chart the nation’s progress — or deterioration — from unspoiled pastoral landscape to a strip mall wasteland. Crumb’s brother Maxon, whom viewers of the documentary film Crumb will remember as an impecunious yogi who sleeps on a bed of nails, contributes an idiosyncratic introduction offering a unique perspective on Robert’s early years. Vol. 15 explores the years 1983 through 1985, best represented by Crumb’s contributions to the magazine he edited and founded, Weirdo, including the first Mode O’Day strips and such Crumb classics as “Psychopathia Sexualis” and “Where Has It Gone, All the Beautiful Music of Our Grandparents?” Also featured are collaborations with Harvey Pekar (from American Splendor) and Charles Bukowski, rare music-related art, the illustrations from Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang, strips from Zap Comix, bold experiments with brushwork, and much more, wrapped under an introduction from Crumb protégé Peter Bagge.

“Great lover, scholar, soldier, sailor, singer, toreador, tycoon, jockey, prizefighter, automobile racer, aviator, farmer. Mickey Mouse lives in a world in which space, time, and the law of physics are nil. He can reach inside of a bull’s mouth, pull out his teeth and use them as castanets. He can lead a band or play violin solos; his ingenuity is limitless; he never fails.” —Time Magazine (1931) “We’ve already seen the gorgeous treatment that Fantagraphics has given to books like Peanuts... so there’s no doubt that Gottfredson’s Mickey Mouse will get the same. Kudos to them for bringing the work of a legendary artist back to today’s readers in a way that will honor his memory and contributions to the medium.” — David Wolkin, Comics Alliance, The New York Times

one of the most eagerly-anticipated projects in comics Today everyone knows Mickey Mouse as the cheerful ambassador of all things Disney. But back in the 1930s, Mickey gained fame as a rough-and-tumble, two-fisted epic hero — an adventurous scrapper matching wits with mobsters, kidnappers, spies, and even (gulp!) city slickers! And Mickey’s greatest feats of derring-do took place in his daily comic strip, written and drawn by one of the greatest cartoonists of the 20th century — Floyd Gottfredson. For its first quarter-century, Gottfredson’s Mickey Mouse was a rip-roaring serial: the most popular cartoon-based comic of its time, a trendsetting adventure continuity aimed at both kids and grown-ups, and the foundation on which all later Disney comics grew — including the adventures of Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge by Gottfredson’s Disney colleague Carl Barks. Glimpses of Floyd Gottfredson’s masterpiece have been reprinted over the years, most famously in Bill Blackbeard’s classic Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics. But the whole strip has never been comprehensively collected in English — until now! Fantagraphics Books is proud to bring this classic Disney creation to a 21st century audience in its entirety, starting from the strip’s 1930 launch. Relive Mickey’s race to a gold mine with Pegleg Pete hot on his heels; Mickey’s life on the lam after being framed for bank robbery; even Mickey’s ringside battle with a hulking heavyweight champ! The premiere volume features a dozen different adventures starring Mickey, his gal Minnie and her Uncle Mortimer, his pals Horace Horsecollar and Butch, the villainous Pegleg Pete, and the mysterious and shrouded Fox. Gottfredson’s vibrant visual storytelling has never been more beautifully reproduced; we promise the best reprinting the strip has ever seen, with each daily lovingly restored from Disney’s original negatives and proof sheets. “Death Valley” also includes more than 50 pages of fascinating supplementary features, including rare behind-the-scenes art and vintage publicity material from the first two years of the strip. Critics, scholars, seasoned Disney archivists, and fellow cartoonists provide commentary and historical essays on the strip’s creation and execution. Walt Disney often said that his studio’s success “all started with a Mouse” — Walt himself wrote the Mickey Mouse strip before turning it over to the able hands of Gottfredson — and today Mickey is among the world’s most recognizable icons. Now it’s time to rediscover the wild, unforgettable personality behind the icon: Floyd Gottfredson’s Mickey Mouse.

Hired as a short-term replacement on the fledgling Mickey Mouse daily strip in 1930, floyd gottfredson (1905–1986) went on to draw the feature for the next 45 years. David Gerstein is a comic book writer/editor and animation historian specializing in the Disney Standard Characters. His books include Mickey and the Gang: Classic Stories in Verse and Walt Disney Treasures—Disney Comics: 70 Years of Innovation. GARY GROTH is the co-publisher of Fantagraphics Books.

A COLLISION OF TWO MASTERS BECOMES A THREESOME: LOU REED, EDGAR ALLAN POE, AND LORENZO MATTOTTI In 2001 legendary rock and roller Lou Reed immersed himself in the world of one of his spiritual forefathers, Edgar Allan Poe, to produce one of his most challenging and original works: POEtry, a cycle of songs directed by the legendary theater director Robert Wilson, in which Reed’s poetically streetwise sensibility merged with Poe’s dark chronicles of terror and despair — combining Poe’s prose and work set to music, Reed songs inspired by Poe, and even two classic Reed tunes whose insertion into this context gave them a new resonance. This suite of songs was released on 2003 on CD as The Raven (Reed’s most recent solo studio album to date). This spectacular volume adds a third dark, unique vision to the mix: The brilliant Italian cartoonist and illustrator Lorenzo Mattotti (RAW Magazine, The New Yorker), whose vivid, abstracted and enigmatic paintings perfectly complement Reed and Poe’s haunting words.

LOU REED’s (b. 1942) most recent releases include Romanticism, a collection of photographs, and Lou Reed’s Berlin, the Julian Schnabel-filmed record of a multi-media performance of Reed’s iconic 1973 album. LORENZO MATTOTTI (b. 1954), whose graphic novel Stigmata is on Fantagraphics’ Fall 2010 schedule, is working on a major new graphic novel. EDGAR ALLAN POE (1809-1849) wrote tales of the macabre, and invented or contributed to inventing the detective and science fiction genres.

A TREASURE MAP LEADS TO AN ISLAND WITH A TERRIBLE SECRET IN JASON’S NEW GRAPHIC NOVEL Five years ago, little Gwenny’s father found, inside a bottle, a map with instructions on how to reach the mysterious Isle of 100,000 Graves and its legendary treasures — and then he vanished. Now Gwenny, having stumbled across another bottle-shipped map, enlists the dubious help of a shipful of pirates, sets out to find the island, and her long-lost dad. Little does she realize that the Isle comes by its ominous name honestly, as the location of a secret school for executioners and torturers, where apple-cheeked youngsters are taught the finer points of extracting information from prisoners… and then putting an end to their lives in a wide variety of gruesome ways. And they’ve reached the point in their studies where theory should ideally give way to practice, so an influx of uninvited visitors comes as a blessing to the faculty. And yes, this story is a comedy. Albeit a dark one. For the first time in his career, Jason has enlisted a writer: Fabien Vehlmann. (Vehlmann has written a number of graphic novels for the French and American markets, including an installment of the legendary Spirou series and the three-volume Green Manor continuity, of which two volumes have been released in English.) Vehlmann has managed to interiorize Jason’s deadpan style and wit perfectly, creating a uniquely smooth and successful collaboration. Jason lives and works in Montpellier, France, far from his native Norway. Isle of 100,000 Graves is his 11th original graphic novel (and his 17th book) released by Fantagraphics Books. Fabien Vehlmann’s 7 Psychopaths, illustrated by Sean Phillips (Criminal, Incognito), will be released by BOOM! Studios in English in late 2010; Vehlmann lives in Paris, France.

EROTICA FOR THE MIND AND EYE BY A COMICS GIANT A woman arrives at an apartment, but her partner can’t get away from work. She is disappointed and settles in for a night alone, but finds a film projector with a reel of film loaded. The film is scratched and blurry, but she can make out a couple making love. When the film burns out, a door is revealed which leads to a misty town square... and a series of fantastical sexual encounters. But the plot doesn’t really matter. Celluloid is a rare instance (especially among Anglo-Saxons) of a top-flight cartoonist working within erotic — even pornographic, to embrace the word — parameters, with the intent of creating a genuine work of art. As the artist says: “There are so many comics about violence. I’m not entertained or amused by violence, and I’d rather not have it in my life. Sex, on the other hand, is something the vast majority of us enjoy, yet it rarely seems to be the subject of comics. Pornography is usually bland, repetitive and ugly, and, at most, ‘does the job’. I always wanted to make a book that is pornographic, but is also, I hope, beautiful, and mysterious, and engages the mind.” Bringing to bear the astonishing range of illustrative and storytelling skills that have served him so well on his collaborations with Neil Gaiman and such solo projects as the (recently re-released) epic graphic novel Cages, Dave McKean forges into new territory with this unique work of erotica. Dave McKean is an illustrator of books and comics, and a maker of films. His graphic novel Cages was recently re-released by Dark Horse Comics. He lives in Kent, England, with a wife, many fish, some millipedes and two children.

SPOTLIGHTING THE LEGENDARY CARTOONISTS’ COURSES This glorious history-and-compilation from Marschall Books is long overdue — filling a hole in the chronicle of America’s cartoon and comics heritage. For generations, there was hardly a major cartoonist or animator in American who had not been a youthful “student” of the many mail-order cartooning “schools” and correspondence courses. At one time these institutions provided rites of passage for aspiring cartoonists, illustrators, and animators. Instant discovery of, and cultivation of, talent invariably was promised by these schools and books… as was success (“Cartoonists Make Big Money!!!”). Thousands of youngsters, over several decades, dutifully bought their tools, set up their bedroom or basement “studios,” and laboriously copied the lessons about perspective, anatomy, shading, wrinkles, folds, action, animals, the human form (ah, the human form)… even those little shadows under characters’ shoes. Many students mailed their drawings in and anxiously awaited corrections by the masters themselves (or reasonable facsimiles of celebrity cartoonists). Mail-Order Geniuses surveys the legendary correspondence courses of the Landon School, the Federal School, W L Evans, ZIM, Clare Briggs, Billy DeBeck, Russell Patterson, Jefferson Machamer, Charles Kuhn, Bill Nolan, Joe Musial, Art Instruction Institute, Famous Cartoonists, and others. The book will reproduce the lessons — in truth, many of these courses were excellent teaching tools — including tips, sketches, wisdom, and drawing-board photos of the great cartoonists of their time. Some lesson books will be reprinted in facsimile. The book will also document the many success stories and accomplished students who “graduated” from the American institutions of another day — Roy Crane and Milton Caniff were Landon School students; the W L Evans School touted a letter from the satisfied, but barely published, student Chester Gould; Charles Schulz’s work as a student so impressed what is now the Art Instruction Institute that they hired him as an instructor of students’ work. This “class reunion” is more than good history, good art, and good fun: it is a vital piece of cartooning history, never documented until this landmark volume. Warren Bernard has lectured on cartoon history at the Library of Congress, as well as the editor of the DVD included with Herblock:The Life and Works of the Great Political Cartoonist. He has contributed material from his collection to over a dozen books about comic history and is the Executive Director of the Small Press Expo. COMICS THAT MAKE SOUTH PARK LOOK LIKE TELETUBBIES Johnny Ryan’s transgressive masterpiece Prison Pit has been the talk of altcomics circles for the past year since its debut in the summer of 2009. But before Prison Pit, Ryan garnered a considerable following via his one-man humor anthology (which doubled as a one-man War Against Political Correctness), Angry Youth Comix. Take a Joke collects many of the best stories from this inimitable series as well as many strips created for the wildly-popular Vice magazine, to which Ryan has contributed for years. Unlike Ryan’s previous collections, which focussed on very short stories, Take a Joke spotlights several of the artist’s longest humor pieces to date, notably: “Graveyard Goofs,” in which Ryan’s hapless antiheroes Sinus O’Gynus and Loady McGee exhume the corpse of the recently-deceased Santa Claus as part of a Top Secret experiment, fantasize an orgy with a collection of anthropomorphic condiment bottles (resulting in an unwanted pregnancy), and end up in Hell; “Boobs Pooter’s Jokepocalypse,” starring a coprophiliac version of Godzilla who destroys the world with hilarious jokes and crazy pranks; and “The World’s Funniest Joke,” a 24-page masterpiece that makes The Aristocrats look like a Nora Ephron film. All this plus Cheeburge Chase, Omletta DuPont, and “The Day The New Yorker Came to Town”!

JOHNNY RYAN was born in Boston, MA and lives in Los Angeles, CA.

“If VICE had to summarize all its beliefs into one gigantic comic book, it would be Angry Youth Comix. It’s poignant and crude and the funniest thing we’ve ever seen.” – VICE Magazine “Ryan brings his mixture of scatology, sex, and billingsgate to an acme of noxious hilarity.” – Booklist “There aren’t many artists in any field who can match Ryan for sheer surreal creativity. His longer strips suggest a filthy hybrid of the Marx Bros. and Monty Python... Ryan’s work is smart, crammed with ideas, and so funny it will melt your retinas.” – Chicago Reader

THE EARLIEST STORIES BY “GIRLHERO” MEGAN KELSO Before her comics were serialized in the New York Times Sunday Magazine (“Watergate Sue,” 2007) or released by Fantagraphics Books (Artichoke Tales, 2010), Megan Kelso was a classic DIY cartoonist/publisher, who crafted and self-published her popular minicomic Girlhero from 1991 to 1996. Queen of the Black Black, which collects these early Girlhero strips (as well as a few from other sources) and was originally published in a limited edition 12 years ago (now long out of print), provides an engrossing chronicle of an ambitious young cartoonist carefully developing her own unique style and approach. In this volume, Kelso scrutinizes bicycle messengers, venereal diseases, infidelity, unwanted pregnancies, temporary work assignments, family reunions, and classroom daydreams in subtle and unexpected manners, setting herself technical challenges such as depicting music in comics (the virtuoso “The Daddy Mask,” with its sensuous gray swirls of sound on the page), integrating lettering into artwork in creative ways, and generally working her way toward what would become her mature style. The title story, “Queen of the Black Black,” rendered in lush gray tones, explores the fraught relationship between the ageing, demanding queen of a fairy-tale realm and a hornblower whom she takes under her wing. There is even a vintage “Artichoke Tale,” predating Kelso recently released graphic novel by a decade and a half. (“I am planning to do a whole book of artichoke tales in the future,” she wrote presciently in her original story notes.) Queen of the Black Black shows the first flowering (or sprouting) of a major cartooning talent, and its return to print (fully redesigned by the author) is welcome news for the many readers delighted by Kelso’s subsequent graphic novels.

• A Franco-Belgian classic never before published in English • Digital ARC • AGE RANGE: 9–11 +

Another never-before-translated classic from the Golden Age of Franco-Belgian comics, finally brought to American readers. Imagine the beautifully crisp images of Hergé (Tintin) put in service of a series of wise-cracking, fast-paced detective stories — punctuated with scenes of spectacular vehicular mayhem (including in this volume a dockside pursuit via car and bulldozer) — and you’ll see why 50 years later Gil Jordan is still considered a masterpiece in Europe. Gil Jordan is a nattily-dressed but tough-as-nails private eye, seconded by his trusty ex-burglar assistant Crackerjack and his eccentric friend Inspector Crouton (as well as the invaluable Miss Midge). Fantagraphics’ first Gil Jordan book combines two of Gil’s finest yarns in one splendid hardcover. In “Murder by High Tide,” Gil and his associates are hired to investigate the suspicious disappearance (death?) of an antiques dealer, while in “Leap of Faith” they get involved in trying to protect an attorney from Joe the Needle, a mysteriously escaped convict with apparent superhuman powers who has sworn vengeance.

Born in 1921, Maurice Tillieux, best known for the 16-volume Gil Jordan series, was also a prolific writer for other artists, responsible for a number of episodes of Tif et Tondu (drawn by Will) and Jess Long (drawn by Piroton). Famous among other things for his spectacular depictions of car chases and crashes, Tillieux died in an automobile accident in 1978.

• A Post-Tintin Franco-Belgian all-ages classic • Digital ARC • AGE RANGE: ALL AGES

A BUCOLIC PARADISE BECOMES THE SITE OF A FIERCE STRUGGLE WHEN AN ARMY OF RATS INVADES Sibyl-Anne and her fiancé Boomer live in blissful peace in the French countryside until the evil rat Ratticus, evicted from his previous residence, sets his eye on the quiet acre that the couple share with their friends (a porcupine, a crow, and a rabbit). After a hilariously unsuccessful attempt to infiltrate the quiet little community in drag (which leaves a member of the cast smitten, Some Like It Hotstyle), the devious Ratticus engineers the takeover of a neighboring rat colony and builds it into an army that sweeps Sibyl-Anne and her friends off their homestead and onto an island. Battles by land, by sea, and even by air ensue, until finally the wicked are defeated and peace is restored. Macherot’s charming mouse’s-eye views of bucolic idyll and his fast-paced, witty storytelling turn this book into something like a Pixar version of The Wind in the Willows. Part of Fantagraphics’ program of bringing American readers the best of post-Tintin Franco-Belgian all-ages comics, Macherot’s “Sibylline” series (as it is called in French) is widely regarded as one of the great classics of the field, and is slated for re-release in French in 2011 as part of a “Complete Sibylline” project. This is the very first instance of Macherot’s work being translated into English.

During a career that stretched from the 1950s to the 1980s, working for both Tintin and Spirou magazines, Raymond Macherot (1924-2008) created the series Chlorophylle, Clifton, Chaminou, and Sibylline (Sibyl-Anne).

TAKE CHESTER GOULD’S DICK TRACY, ADD STEROIDS, TELEPORT IT TO SPAIN… AND YOU HAVE “THE CABBIE”! Sergio Leone’s retooling of classic westerns for his “spaghetti westerns”… Stieg Larsson’s striking take on the serial killer/mystery thriller in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo… And for that matter ABBA’s fiendishly catchy appropriation of American pop music. Sometimes it takes Europeans to make gold of tuckered-out American tropes. Add to those instances of inspired global cross-pollination the Spanish cartoonist Martí’s eye-popping The Cabbie, which spins off Martin Scorsese’s sordid urban-justice drama Taxi Driver with a graphic style that unapologetically appropriates and even refines the brutal slabs of black, squashed perspectives, and grotesque approach to human physiognomy (and its ability to withstand punishment) that define Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy. And as Art Spiegelman (who was the first to publish Martí’s work in English, in RAW magazine) notes in his introduction, while “Gould’s graphic black and white precision and his diagrammatic clarity live on in Martí’s work,” he points out that “more interestingly, perhaps, so does Gould’s depravity.” Indeed, if anything, The Cabbie is even more savage than the legendarily brutal Dick Tracy, with its pimps, whores, petty thieves, corrupt businessmen, all swirling around the ingenuously violent “Cabbie” whose self-administered “upstanding citizen” status entitles him — in his view — to even more shocking acts of violence — especially on his quest for the stolen coffin of his father, which he’s told includes his entire inheritance!

Born in 1955, Martí has been published in the anthologies RAW, Drawn and Quarterly, and Pictopia; an issue of his solo comic Calvario Hills, which appeared under the “Ignatz” imprint from Fantagraphics in 2007, revived the Cabbie for a new adventure.

“Over the years of our collaboration, Malcolm McNeill produced more than a hundred pages of artwork. However, owing partly to he expense of full color reproduction, and because the book falls into neither the category of the conventional illustrated book nor that of a comix publication there have been some difficulties with the arrangements for the complete work... The book is in fact unique.” —William S. Burroughs, April, 1978

A LOST MASTERPIECE FROM THE AUTHOR OF NAKED LUNCH This two-volume set prints, for the first time, a lost graphic novel written by the innovative Beat writer William S. Burroughs. The first book, Ah Pook Is Here, first appeared in 1970 under the title The Unspeakable Mr. Hart as a monthly comic series written by Burroughs and drawn by the British illustrator and painter Malcolm McNeill in the English magazine Cyclops. When the publication folded, Burroughs and McNeill decided to develop the project into a full-length, Word/ Image novel (the term ‘graphic novel’ had yet to be coined). The book was conceived as a single painting in which text and images were combined in whatever form seemed appropriate to the narrative. It was conceived as 120 continuous pages that would ‘fold out.’ Such a book was unprecedented, and no publisher was willing to take a chance and publish a ‘graphic novel.’ Burroughs and McNeill finally abandoned the project after working on it for 7 years. Fantagraphics Books is proud to bring this literary collaboration between one of America’s most distinctive writers and his exemplary hand-chosen artist to light. Ah Pook Is Here explores the refraction of ancient cultures on our contemporary one and the top-down control of social norms. John Stanley Hart is the “Ugly American,” a billionaire newspaper tycoon and the ”Instrument of Control.” He attempts to create a Media Control Machine using the images of Fear and Death. By increasing Control, however, he devalues time and invokes an implacable enemy: Ah Pook, the Mayan Death God. Young mutant heroes using the same Mayan formulae travel through time bringing biologic plagues from the remote past to destroy Hart and the Judeo/Christian temporal reality he represents. Ah Pook is a mind-boggling tour de force, dramatizing outré theories with a science fiction patina. The second book in the set is Observed While Falling, written by Malcolm McNeill, an account of the personal and creative interaction that defined the collaboration between the writer and the artist, the events surrounding it, and the reasons for its ultimate demise. McNeill describes his growing friendship with Burroughs and how their personal relationship affected their creative partnership. The book is written with insight and humor, and liberally sprinkled with the kind of the hilarious anecdotes one would expect working with a writer as original and eccentric as William S. Burroughs. It confirms the prescience of Ah Pook Is Here with respect to the contemporary graphic novel; Burroughs’ exploration of the artistic potential of combining words and images was a revelation to the artist. The book offers new insights into Burroughs’ working methods as well as how the two explored the possibilities of words and images working together to form the ambitious literary hybrid that they didn’t know, at the time, was a harbinger of the 21st century the “graphic novel.” WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS (Feb. 5, 1914 – Aug. 2, 1997) was a novelist, poet, essayist, painter, spoken word performer and Beat Generation icon. His words continue to affect popular culture and literature. MALCOLM McNEILL has worked as an illustrator, painter, and sculptor. He was involved in television production for fifteen years, first as a designer, then as a director of music videos, commercials, and short films. He won numerous awards in this field including an Emmy for his first network project — the opening title sequence to Saturday Night Live in 1984.

• An all-new travelogue from a National Book Award nominee • Digital ARC (PDF) • AGE RANGE: 15 +

“SEEING ESTONIA — DISROBING HER — WAS MY FOCUS” Any journey with Alexander Theroux is an education. Possessed of a razor-sharp and hyperliterate mind, he stands beside Thomas Pynchon as one of the sharpest cultural commentators of our time. So when he decided to accompany his wife — the artist Sarah Son-Theroux — on her Fulbright Scholarship to Estonia, it occasioned this penetrating examination of a country that, for many, seems alien and distanced from the modern world. For Theroux, the country and its people become a puzzle. His fascination with their language, manners, and legacy of occupation and subordination lead him to a revelatory examination of Estonia’s peculiar place in European history. All the while, his trademark acrobatic allusions, quotations, and digressions — which take us from Hamlet through Jean Cocteau to Married… with Children — render his travels as much internal and psychical as they are external and physical. Through these obsessive references to Western culture, we come to appreciate how insular the country has become, yet also marvel at its fierce individuality and preternatural beauty — such is the skill of Theroux’s gaze. This travelogue of his nine months abroad also brims with anecdotes of Theroux’s encounters with Estonian people and — in some of its most bitterly comedic episodes — his fellow Americans whom he at times feels more alienated from than the frosty, humorless Europeans. Estonia: A Ramble Through the Periphery is as biting and satirical as it is witty and urbane; as curious and lyrical as it is brash and irreverent. It marks a new highlight in an already stellar career and a book that continues Fantagraphics’ exceptional line of prose works.

Alexander Theroux is an award-winning novelist, poet and teacher whose previous prose works for Fantagraphics include Laura Warholic or, The Sexual Intellectual and the two artist monographs The Strange Case of Edward Gorey and The Enigma of Al Capp. His novel Darconville’s Cat was chosen by Anthony Burgess as one of the 99 greatest post-war novels. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife Sarah-Son Theroux.

“[Laura Warholic] is brilliantly written.” – Norman Mailer “[Laura Warholic is] a work that screams 'literary event.' Theroux takes up a signature theme, thwarted love. Undeniably funny and compelling, linguistically and intellectually dazzling, as well as offensive and outrageously prolix, Theroux's spiky catchall satire of the myriad ills of contemporary culture and the divide between idealized love and unbridled lust grinds and thrashes its way to an obliterating conclusion.” – Booklist

“The Playboy cartoons collected [in Gahan Wilson: Fifty Years of Playboy Cartoons] demonstrate above all Wilson's phenomenal range in subject, style, and inspiration. ... The menace in domestic relations, the evil that kids are capable of, the outright nastiness that man inflicts on man: it's all here, drawn in Wilson's inimitable comic style. ... And Fantagraphics has also served Wilson well. This collection is a wonder of book design, with die-cut boards, marvelous color reproduction, and a fantastic slipcase. The clear plastic panel on one side reveals the laminated back board of the books, each one a different headshot photo of Wilson himself, his face smashed against the plastic, a prisoner in his own collection. REMEMBER HOW BAFFLING, TERRIFYING, AND SAD CHILDHOOD REALLY WAS? NOW YOU CAN LAUGH AT IT. In this thematically and narratively linked series of one-page stories originally published in the National Lampoon’s “Funny Pages” section throughout the 1970s, the master of the macabre eschewed his usual ghouls, vampires, and end-of-the-world scenarios for a wry, pointed look at growing up normal in the real, yet endlessly weird world. Watch as our stoic, hunting-cap-wearing protagonist (known only as “The Kid”) copes with illness, disappointment, strange old relatives, the disappointment of Christmas, life-threatening escapades, death, school, the awfulness of camp, and much more — all delineated in Wilson’s roly-poly, sensual, delicately hatched line. “Nuts” was (partly) collected in a now long out-of-print volume back in 1979. This new hardcover edition reprints every single “Nuts” story from the Lampoon (rescuing over two dozen pages from oblivion) and reinstitutes the color in the “Christmas” and “Halloween” episodes, and for that matter the 3-D in the 3-D episode (“I wish to God I’d never seen all this space.”) If you don’t remember what it was like being a child, this book will bring it all back… for good or for ill!

In his ninth decade as a human being and his sixth as a master cartoonist, Gahan Wilson (born dead in 1930) continues to produce cartoons for a variety of magazines including Playboy and The New Yorker.

HAUNTED BY HIS LONG-LOST LOVE, PRINCE VALIANT JOURNEYS BACK TO THE LAND OF HIS BIRTH As this fourth volume begins, Prince Valiant, haunted by Aleta, seeks Merlin’s wise counsel. This brief episode segues into one of Hal Foster’s patented epics, “The Long Voyage to Thule,” which ran for seven straight months and featured Valiant’s return to his birthplace and reunion with his father. Of course, Foster’s astonishingly detailed and evocative depictions of Val’s homeland contribute greatly to this sprawling epic. After a series of shorter adventures including “The Seductress,” “The Call of the Sea,” and “The Jealous Cripple,” Val finally decides he can stand it no more and sets out to find his long-lost love. Long-time fans know that his quest will eventually be successful, but Foster throws so many obstacles in the way of true love that the saga “The Winning of Aleta” would end up stretching a full year and a half, well into the next volume. With its stunning art reproduced directly from pristine printer’s proofs, Fantagraphics has introduced a new generation to Foster’s masterpiece, while providing long-time fans with the ultimate, definitive version of the strip. “Medieval swordplay and adventure have never been as glorious as in Foster’s Sunday-only comic strip. This edition has been reproduced from pristine printer’s proofs to give the gorgeous artwork its crispest version ever.... Prince Valiant is one of the bestdrawn comics ever, and this new edition does ample justice to its achievement.” — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

OUR HEROES ENTER THE SIXTH GRADE IN VOLUME TWO OF THIS LEGENDARY SERIES In the second volume of Shimura Takako's superb coming-of-age story, our transgendered protagonists, Shuichi and Yoshino, have entered the sixth grade. Shuichi spends a precious gift of cash from his grandmother on a special present for himself, a purchase that triggers a chain of events in which his sister Maho learns his secret, and Shuichi inadvertently steals the heart of a boy Maho in interested in. The “woman” who showed so much interest in Yoshino (when she was wearing a boy’s school uniform) in volume one reappears with “her” boyfriend, and becomes a mentor and friend to the two children. And the kids go on a class trip that is a rite of passage Shuichi would rather pass up. Shuichi is called a “faggot” by another boy, and the dramatic nature in which Saori comes to Shuichi’s defense leads the two to discover a shared fondness for Anne of Green Gables. But despite his propensity to cry (a propensity noted repeatedly by his more outgoing sister), Shuichi finds strength and courage he didn’t know he had. A sophisticated work translated with sophistication by veteran translator and comics scholar Matt Thorn.

SHIMURA TAKAKO lives in Tokyo, Japan.

like a sniper lining up his shot by Jacques Tardi and Jean-Patrick Manchette $18.99 Hardcover • Territory: X COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS / Crime & Mystery • CQ: 28 104 pages, black-and-white, 7 ¾" x 10 ¾" ISBN 978-1-60699-448-1

THE TARDI/MANCHETTE TEAM OF WEST COAST BLUES REUNITES FOR ANOTHER BRUTAL NEO-NOIR CLASSIC Like many of the greatest noir thrillers, Like a Sniper Lining Up His Shot begins with a classic, even clichéd set-up: Martin Terrier, the hired killer, needs just one more big job so that he can turn in his guns, return to his native village to find and marry his childhood sweetheart, and retire. But nothing goes as expected, his “last job” turns out to be a set-up that results in a bloody shoot-out from which Terrier barely escapes with his life, and soon he’s on the run from not only the authorities and his treacherous ex-bosses but also the members of a crime syndicate still seeking revenge for an earlier hit on one of theirs. (We won’t even mention what they do to his cat.) With Like a Sniper Lining Up His Shot, Tardi, at the top of his form, once again puts his lushly efficient neo-clear-line style in the service of Manchette’s gleefully brisk prose for a spectacularly dark, violent and fast-paced crime thriller that will delight fans of their previous collaboration, West Coast Blues. (NOTE: Manchette’s original 1981 novel, La Position du tireur couché, was released in English under the title The Prone Gunman by City Lights in 2001.)

Jacques Tardi lives and work in Paris, France. He is currently hard at work on his next graphic novel, his fourth adaptation of a Jean-Patrick Manchette crime thriller. JEAN-PATRICK MANCHETTE (1942-1995) was a French crime novelist, essayist, and translator. “Tardi brings a rough and gritty reality and an existential strangeness that makes his crime stories different than anyone else’s. I’ll read anything he draws.” – Ed Brubaker “To put it simply, this shit kicks ass.” – Howard Chaykin “For unadorned genre material, nothing this year beats West Coast Blues, French wunderkind Jacques Tardi's excellent, unflinching adaptation of a brutal hardboiled crime novel by Jean-Patrick Marchette.” – Steven Grant, Comic Book Resources

MAGGIE DEALS WITH THE PAST AND HOPEY MOVES INTO THE FUTURE IN THE LATEST COMPLETE L&R BOOK As Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez continue to delight readers new and old with the continuing adventures of their characters in the annual Love and Rockets: New Stories (Volume 3 released Sept. 2010), Fantagraphics continues to collect their earlier stories in these fat, handy, and inexpensive collections. In this batch of “Locas” stories by Jaime Hernandez from the pages of Love and Rockets Volume II (picking up where 2010’s Penny Century collection left off), an older and wiser Maggie faces down her old demons and the “Ghost of Hoppers” in a full-length graphic novel (which also introduces one of Jaime’s greatest recent characters, Vivian the “Frogmouth,” the near-psychotic bombshell). Meanwhile, the ever-feisty but maturing Hopey (her Spanish birth name giving this collection its title) transitions from tending bar to teaching kindergarten (while still juggling a complex love life), and the final quarter of the book shows Maggie’s lovable ex Ray Dominguez being dragged into the aftermath of a grisly murder thanks to his falling for the “Frogmouth.”

“Jaime Hernandez’s comics often provoke bursts of laughter — not necessarily because they’re outright comedic, although they sometimes are, but because they’re so ingeniously constructed.” — The New York Times Book Review JAIME HERNANDEZ is a lifelong Los Angelean, where he continues to chronicle Maggie’s life in the pages of Love and Rockets: New Stories. JACK DAVIS: DRAWING AMERICAN POP CULTURE A Career Retrospective by Jack Davis $49.99 Hardcover • Territory: E COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS / Anthology • CQ: 14 192 pages, full-color, 10" x 13" ISBN 978-1-60699-447-4

• Great gift idea • A must-have collection for MAD magazine collectors • Featuring several fold-outs • Digital ARC • AGE RANGE: 15 +

THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION OF A NATIONAL ARTISTIC TREASURE Jack Davis arrived on the illustration scene in the euphoric post-war America of the late 1940s when consumer society was booming and the work force identified with commercial images that reflected this underlying sense of confidence and American bravado. Advertising agencies were looking for new ways to tap a rich and expanding market, and there was a vast array of media that needed illustrations. Davis’ animated and exuberant images possessed a sense of spontaneous energy that proved to have universal appeal in every medium he worked in. Beginning with his masterful pen and ink cartooning at EC Comics, he quickly forged a reputation as one of the most versatile artists in comics, drawing humor, horror, and war stories. In Harvey Kurtzman’s MAD, especially, Davis made a mark as a master of caricature, composition, and wild, anarchic crowd scenes, practically vibrating with energy. After stints at MAD, Trump, and Humbug — three humor magazines that defined the satirical zeitgeist of the ’50s — Davis went on to become the most successful commercial illustrator of his generation, illustrating movie posters, magazine articles, magazine fiction, LP jackets, and more. Jack Davis: Drawing American Pop Culture is a gigantic, unparalleled career-spanning retrospective, between whose hard covers resides the greatest collection — in terms of both quantity and quality — of Jack Davis’ work ever assembled! It includes work from every stage of his long and varied career, such as: excerpts of satirical drawings from his college humor ’zine, The Bull Sheet; examples of his comics work from EC, MAD, Humbug, Trump, and obscure work he did for other companies in the 1950s such as Dell; movie posters including It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Bad News Bears, Woody Allen’s Bananas, The Party, and others; LP jacket art for such musicians and bands as Hans Conreid and the Creature Orchestra’s Monster Rally, Spike Jones and Ben Cooler; cartoons and illustrations from Playboy, Sports Illustrated, Time, TV Guide, Esquire, and many others; unpublished illustrations and drawings Davis did as self-promotional pieces, proposed comic strips that never sold (such as his Civil War epic “Beaureagard”), finished drawings for unrealized magazine projects — and even illustrations unearthed in the Davis archives that the artist himself can’t identify! Much of the material will be scanned directly from original art, showing the painterly brush strokes and black and white pen work with far greater fidelity than any previous reproduction ever has. Many paintings and illustrations are accompanied by preliminary drawings that demonstrate the evolution of Davis’ drawing process.

One of America’s most beloved and best known illustrators, JACK DAVIS was born in December 2, 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia, and still makes his home in the area.

THE FIRST U.S. COLLECTION FROM A BUDDING INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR The Man Who Grew His Beard is Belgian cartoonist Olivier Schrauwen’s first American book, having staked a reputation over the last decade as one of Europe’s most talented storytellers. It collects seven short stories, each a headspinning display of craft and storytelling that mixes early twentieth-century comics influences like Winsor McCay with a thoroughly contemporary voice that provokes and entertains with subversively surreal humor and subtle criticism of twentieth-century tropes and images. The stories themselves, though each stands alone, are intertwined thematically, offering peeks into the minds of semi-autistic, achingly isolated men and their feverish inner worlds and how they interact and contrast with their real environment. Though Schrauwen taps ‘surrealist’ or ‘absurdist’ impulses in his work, you will not read a more careful and precise collection of stories this year. The stories included are: “Hair Types,” a hilarious piece that on the surface explores the pseudoscientific classification of personality as a function of hair but becomes something more akin to a fable about self-fulfilling prophecy; “Chromo Congo,” a silent story about two men on safari who meet a corpulent and obnoxious hunter; as well as “The Task,” “The Man Who Grew His Beard,” “The Lock,” “The Cave,” and “The Imaginist.” Though this is Schrauwen’s first U.S. edition of comics, he has wowed American fans with his appearances in the anthology MOME over the last few years, and one of his MOME stories was one of three comics selected for the 2009 edition of Dave Eggers’ influential Best American Nonrequired Reading.

OLIVIER SCHRAUWEN was born in Belgium in 1977 and studied animation at the Academy of Art in Gent, and comics at the Saint Luc in Brussels. He currently lives in Berlin.

“I don’t know much about Olivier Schrauwen, [but I] know that he’s some sort of postmodern comics genius.” — Eisner Award-winning comics critic Tom Spurgeon 41 NORTON-spring-2011.indd 41

AN UNDERGROUND ICON TAKES A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE They were all there, the pimps, the fags, the whores, the curious, the alcoholic, the weird of the late ’50s... blues lovers, Canadian bikers, thrill seekers, junkies, insomniacs, hepcats...” So begins “Down at the Kitty Kat,” one of the 20-plus neverbefore-collected memoirs and yarns by Spain Rodriguez, one of the original gang of Zap Comix provocateurs. Although he’s best known for his two-fisted tales of the chopper-riding Trashman, Spain’s blunt graphic style and uncompromising gift for caricature, rendered in eye-punishing slabs of black and white, work equally well for more subtle fare — such as these memoirs of his misspent youth. Cruisin’ With the Hound ranges from Spain’s days as an innocent young churchgoer to his time as a member of the Road Vultures motorcycle gang, with stops along the way for his discoveries of science fiction and other, more adult pursuits (“The Birth of Porn”) — as well as the “The Education of an Underground Cartoonist,” describing his journey from a pimply Captain Marvel-reading scribbler to his arrival as a professional artist. But the heart of this collection is a cycle of stories (originally published in the acclaimed Blab! magazine) set during Spain’s teenage days in the 1950s, often featuring the doomed, dot-eyed Fred Tooté, a wild, flaky character in whose company some of his wildest escapades occurred. Raunchy, hilarious, and often violent as hell, Cruisin’ With the Hound is an unsentimentally nostalgic trip to half a century ago — the antiHappy Days, set to a true rock ’n’ roll beat. SPAIN RODRIGUEZ (born 1940 in Buffalo, New York), was one of the original Zap cartoonists. The creator of such memorable characters as Trashman and Big Bitch, he has also cultivated a life-long taste for radical politics, as evidenced by his most recent full-length work: a graphic biography of Che Guevara (Verso, 2009). A TRIPTYCH OF MYTHICAL HISTORIES FROM THE 8TH AND 15TH CENTURIES, BY THE CREATOR OF EPILEPTIC David B., the creator of the acclaimed Epileptic, gives full rein to his fascination with history, magic and gods, not to mention grand battles, in this literate, witty, and absorbing collection of stories — all based on historical fact, or at least historical legend, and delineated in a striking stylized two-color format. “The Veiled Prophet”: During the 8th century (the time of Harun al-Rashid, the Caliph of 1001 Nights fame), Hakim al-Muqanna, the lowly Persian fabric dyer, is assaulted and enveloped by a piece of white cloth come from the sky. When a bystander recognizes in the folds of the cloth the visage of Abu-Muslim, defender of the oppressed, al-Muqanna becomes a prophet and great leader — and within a year his followers have defeated seven armies sent to stop him! “The Armed Garden,” set in the 15th century, tells the story of the bloody quest for a Paradise on Earth. Rohan, a humble Prague blacksmith, is visited by Adam and Even who urge him lead his followers, soon dubbed “Adamites,” on this mission. They soon must contend, bloodily, with the rival Paradise-seekers the “Taborites,” led by John Zizka. “The Drum Who Fell in Love,” a sequel of sorts, begins with Zizka’s death: His people have him skinned and his skin stripped onto a drum, and the drum, speaking in Zizka’s voice, leads the Taborites into battle anew. But the touch of a beautiful girl softens Zizka’s spirit, and the unlikely couple begin a journey together… DAVID B. splits his time between France and Italy.

A NEW BATCH OF SURREAL PHILOSOPHICAL COMICS FROM THE CREATOR OF BARDÍN THE SUPERREALIST Disgusted and appalled with the today’s noisy and noisome world in which all is spectacle and surface sensation, Nick flees into the solitude of the desert. But even as he manages to recover some sort of spiritual balance thanks to ascetic regimen of fasting and meditation, Nick is seduced by the most spectacular and mesmerizing spectacle of all time: The procession of the Queen of Saba. In Vapor, the award-winning Spanish cartoonist Max (best known for his 2006 book Bardín the Superrealist) once again engages in delightful philosophical mind games, starring another wildly stylized and endearing protagonist — this time deploying a striking, crisp black and white graphic style perfectly suited for this desert-based fantasia.
