On the 6th July 2011, Natwest held this year’s charity event, a fantastic fashion show. The social committee at Natwest organised the evening in aid of Nazareth House & Calpe House and what a success the evening was. Over 200 tickets were sold as well as food kindly prepared by members of staff from Natwest. In total the evening helped raise over £2,500 which has gone to a very good cause. The models, all Natwest staff, friends and family put on a great display in conjunction with Trends. The evening also included some entertainment, including some songs, dances and perfromances by local children. The lovely ladies of Natwest

Leading the Way: Gibraltar’s Trailblazing Summer Sports Programme is Back! Offering up to twenty-six different sports and an additional eleven performance, leisure and educational activities, the Summer Sports and Leisure Programme truly caters for all tastes. The programme, open to local children of all ages, runs from Monday 11th July to Friday 26th August this year at the Bayside Sports centre, and what is more, it’s free! However, planning, organising and running such a large and detailed programme of daily events, catering for such large numbers of children, is no easy task, and there are many hardworking individuals toiling behind the scenes to ensure the programme’s success. We were able to catch up with one of the Sports Leaders in Charge, Lynette Alvarez, to get an insight into the preparation that goes into the Summer Sports Programme. What are your qualifications and experiences in sports development? I have a BSc Honours in Sports Development with Coaching and five years’ experience as a Recreation Assistant and Supervisor, and Swimming Coordinator, at the University of Sheffield Sports Centre. What role do you have within summer sports and what does it entail? As one of the Sports Leaders in Charge my role is quite varied; from leading, coaching and delivering sessions to kids, to evaluating volunteer support and management and sorting out the weekly rotas for the different sports leader teams. This further extends to welcoming parents, first aiding, liaising with GSLA Officers and monitoring the facilities and allocations, to name but a few. I keep pretty busy. Are you alone in this or are there others who work alongside you? There are loads of others who put a lot of time and effort into this programme. It just wouldn’t be possible, or such a success, without the help of everyone who works in the GSLA, the volunteers, the individual Sport Authorities and the nine Sports Leaders, who deliver the sessions to the kids. What goes on behind the scenes to make summer sports such a success? A lot of hard work! There is plenty of planning and lots of communication between different groups, areas and departments, in order to make sure everything runs smoothly – teamwork! Most importantly, there is a genuine passion for sports and coaching amongst the staff and volunteers. How many people contribute to summer sports and in what ways? Other than those previously mentioned, I think it’s important to note the invaluable support we get from the Sports Development Officers, Michelle and Victor, our sponsors, Natwest, the GSLA Officers and all those who work for the GSLA. Without them it just wouldn’t happen.

There were a few differences of opinion when it came to choosing a favourite, but the one that everyone agreed on was the white, an Italian Pinot Grigio; a lovely crisp dry, flavoursome wine. The differences of opinion however, really came when deciding on the reds. We were stuck on the Thomas Barton St. Emillion from France, the Fermingham Pinot Noir from New Zealand and the Marques de Valparaiso Reserva from Spain. Mine was the Pinot Noir from New Zealand; silky smooth but still had great body and flavour. Now we can’t have that many wines without having some food, and this too was delicious; swordfish, chicken, steaks, jacket potatoes and all the trimmings, Latinos really outdid themselves. All this plus Glen’s finger-licking smoked spare ribs, marinated in his secret sauce, made standing up a struggle for a few of us after such a “demanding” evening. But having members of the Gibraltar Choir in the club is always a bonus, as Monty treated us to a couple of songs at the end of the night. In summary, the night was characterised by great wines, great food and a fantastic atmosphere. Our next wine tasting will take place at Corks Wine Bar in Irish Town on September 29th at 8:30pm. There we will be tasting some sweet wines and Sherries from Jerez. Hopefully we will also have someone come over from Jerez to give a little talk on Sherry too.

The WAC (Wine Appreciation Club) recently held their summer wine tasting barbecue at Latinos On The Beach. Not as many people turned up as expected which meant more wines for the rest. And what wines! One white, one rosé, four reds and a delicious sparkling Shiraz, all supplied by Saconne and Speed.
