The cure for the end of summer blues!
Also squirrelled away in this edition amongst the usual profusion of advertisements and personals we have a new monthly medical column by final year student Karl Alvarez (ironically, tackling the subject of depression this month), as well as an article by Pro-Tivity on new ways to identify and combat stress. Of course, if this isn’t enough for you, perhaps some IT Troubleshooting courtesy of Gib Geeks, or a recruitment news update from Career Finders, may pique your interest? Here’s wishing you all a Super September and a Happy National Day!

Headlining this month is our alternative interview with the Leader of the Opposition, Fabian Picardo. Read on to see what prompted him to update his Facbook status with “...really enjoyed being interviewed by (the) GibEasy for their next edition... Not the usual questions!”

But there really is no reason to be glum at all! August, and its intense heat has been and gone; GCSE and A-level students have received another batch of outstanding results; all the other kids are off back to school to a collective sigh of relief from parents across Gibraltar; and before we know it National Day will be here along with its bank holiday. What is more, this edition we have some serious treats for our readers, to beat away those September blues.
Home
It’s September… The ninth month of the year. However, as its name quite clearly indicates, it used to be the seventh month of the year, when March (not January) marked the beginning of the Roman Calendar. Taking this into account, if March were still the first month of the year, that would make September the equivalent of July, and we’d be back at the start of the summer again! Now wouldn’t that be awesome!? Sadly, the Roman Calendar was changed in 153 BC, and January became number one, so now we’re stuck with it, and it’s still the end of the summer!

Q; How much of m y "search history " or files could be easily recovered if deleted? Well, first it’s important to establish the “type” of delete; that is to say, some deletion types can be recovered, depending on the time, money or effort thrown at the problem. Many operating systems, file managers, and other software provide a facility where a file is not immediately deleted when the user requests that action. Instead, the file is moved to a holding area, to allow the user to easily revert a mistake. Similarly, many software products automatically create backup copies of files that are being edited to allow the user to restore the original version, or to recover from a possible crash (autosave feature). Even after deletion, operating systems do not actually remove the contents of a file. Instead, it is faster to simply remove the file’s entry from the system directory. The contents of the file — the actual data — will remain there until the operating system reuses the space for new data. In some systems, enough file system metadata are also left behind to enable easy un-deletion by commonly available utility software. Until it has been overwritten, data can be read by software that reads disk sectors directly. Likewise, reformatting, repartitioning or reimaging a system is not always guaranteed to write to every area of the disk, though all will cause the disk to appear empty to most software. Finally, even when the storage medium is overwritten, physical properties of the medium may make it possible to recover the previous contents. In most cases however, this recovery requires using laboratory techniques such as disassembling the device and directly accessing/reading from its components. So, clearing your search history may not be enough to remove the data, it may be necessary to use 3rd party software like CCleaner to remove data permanently. However, it is important to remember that this method is still within the basic file deletion phase. A much more thorough method would be to delete the data, then overwrite the data area multiple times using the “Drive Wipe” utility. Secure Delete is another software variety that carries out many of the functions of CCleaner. Well, I hope some of the above is of use to you? See you next time at Geeks’ Corner. www.GibGeeks.com

Having been born and brought up in Gibraltar the changes I have seen over the past 10 years or so with regards the job market can only be described as “Phenomenal.” For those people currently living in Gibraltar, many will be aware that the amount of jobs available has seen an increase. There seems to be no slowing down of new vacancies, new projects and the need for experienced professionals. At a time when you only have to watch the news for five minutes to realise the astronomically high levels of unemployment going on in some of Europe’s main countries, it is fantastic that Gibraltar has remained adequately productive in areas of recruitment. A lot of people will put it down to the amount of new companies taking advantage of low tax levels to set up offices in Gibraltar. But it is far more than just this; Gibraltar is gradually becoming a place where “we have something for everyone.” Enough restaurants and bars to keep young adults entertained, an excellent education system where teenagers seem to producing excellent results, their families assisted with soaring university costs, and a brilliant health service where you will be guaranteed a comprehensive level of service. What we are also seeing from employers is a willingness to take on graduates and train up individuals so that they can become multi-skilled within the company that hires them. These are all contributing factors as to why Gibraltar has become an attractive place to relocate. Officially released on 27th June 2010, “Antichrist: The Beginning” is thrilling journey through the occult, the supernatural and the world’s worst fears. The first instalment in the “Antichrist Trilogy” (available in paperback and on Kindle via Amazon) sees some of the world’s most ancient legends merged together and brought to life in a bid to battle the modern forces of evil. Set in Britain and the Middle East and drawing on Arthurian and Grail legends, the novel presents the world with a new type of terrorism, whose final goal must be prevented from being achieved at all costs.
From his home in the quiet, rural town of Westbury, in Wiltshire, Hector drew inspiration from his surroundings for “Antichrist”. Living close to and having visited the historical ruins at Glastonbury and researching the many legends associated with the historic site (King Arthur and Avalon in particular) was a perfect backdrop and catalyst for the novel: “I had a vague idea in my mind and it wouldn’t leave until I began writing it down. Once I started I couldn’t stop”.
In addition to the “Antichrist Trilogy”, Hector has a series of other manuscripts awaiting publication. Judging from his success with “Antichrist” his other scripts; an Elizabethan historical novel; the comically entitled “Blow Job” about a professional trombone player; a politically charged novel about two brothers living in post-civil war Spain; and his latest thriller also set in Spain, will no doubt be hits as well.
It is thus that the “Antichrist Trilogy” has come to pass. Book two in the series is set for a late summer release, splitting the action between Spain and the Middle East, and book 3, being released as a double novel, will follow bringing the saga to its thrilling climax in a 9/11 setting.
“Antichrist: The Beginning” is currently available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle editions. Further information about the author and his work can be found on www.hpcortes.com or via his publishers at http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/Antichrist.html

However, since suffering a mini stroke in 2003, when he was still professionally involved in music as a conductor in Bath, he has had to substitute his life’s passion for a new one; writing.

Pro-tivity offers companies a way to process, address and adhere to ‘best practice’ models as outlined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Employers can now feel secure that they are fulfilling their responsibility by engaging with Pro-tivity as a means to accurately measure and treat the effects of stress on employees over the last few days, months or even years. Stress has a proven impact on wellbeing and, by extension, profit and productivity. Consequently, dealing with stress and wellbeing is perhaps the biggest concern for employers and organisations. Depression
As summer draws to a close and the days become noticeably shorter, many of us will be returning to school or to work. We may therefore be forgiven for claiming to feel a bit “low” or “depressed”. However, the term depression is used all too often with little notice of the fact that it is a true medical condition. Depression is difficult to define even amongst prominent psychiatrists due to the broad spectrum of this disease. It is therefore largely defined on the basis of its features, including; a pervasive low mood, anhedonia (a loss of interest or pleasure) and anergia (loss of energy and diminished activity), poor concentration, low self-esteem, reduced appetite, disturbed sleep, diminished libido, ideas of guilt and worthlessness, bleak pessimistic views on life, ideas of self-harm and suicide. Reading through the above list many of you may think that you are experiencing or have experienced depression at some point in your life. This is not unlikely. Each year 40% of us have quite severe feelings of unhappiness and disappointment, of these, 20% experience clinical depression. Depression tends to occur in females twice as much as men and has a peak incidence during one’s late 20’s. So what causes depression? Well the simple answer is we don’t know!! Exogenous factors such as recent adverse life events, stress and child abuse may seem obvious. But this does not explain why some people who experience these traumatic events get depression while others don’t. This is why it is important to remember that anti-depressants are not the only treatment available for depression. Research has shown therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy and bibliotherapy (using self-help manuals) to be more effective than anti-depressants in the treatment of mild depression and as effective as anti-depressants in the treatment of moderate depression. Anti-depressants should, however, be used in the treatment for severe depression.
The other remedy of course, for those of us with the holiday blues, is the assurance that in a few months time the summer will be upon us again. Unfortunately, this also means that we will all be a year older... now there is a depressing thought! Karl Alvarez, Final Year Medical Student , University of Southampton. pg 14 Gib Easy Magazine
It’s a Tuesday. Not just any Tuesday. It’s a grey Tuesday. The Levanter cloud is dominating the skies over Gibraltar and everyone is sticking to everything they touch. However, today we are not in our office with its solitary fan fighting a losing battle against the day’s humidity. We are actually at the GSLP offices in Watergardens. More importantly, we are in the Leader of the Opposition’s office. Even more importantly, he has air conditioning and we are no longer sutured to our clothes. In fact we are positively comfortable; a position not entirely shared by the subject of our interview who initially seems a bit wary of the two overly casual pseudo-journalists sitting across the table from him. Yet, there we are, bathed in the luminescence of the Sky News report on the waves of looting and rioting dominating the city of London. Mr Picardo doesn’t know what to expect. We are unsure of how this is going to go down! Apparently they’ve just looted Carpet Right! At least there’s coffee on the table…
Brilliant… I guess the follow-on from that would be how did you think that these hopes and dreams would benefit mankind? It’s a difficult one… I’ll tell you what. When I decided to become a lawyer I didn’t want to be a commercial lawyer, I didn’t want to be a trust lawyer, I didn’t want to be a company lawyer, I wanted to be a human rights lawyer, and I always saw myself standing between my client and the state as the last barrier between the abuse of my client’s rights. These things are usually fuelled by watching stuff on TV about lawyers defending people on Death Row, that sort of thing. That’s the lawyer I wanted to be and that’s the lawyer, eventually, in my view, I was able to become when I started in the litigation practice at Hassans. Of course, there’s no death penalty in Gibraltar, and there aren’t any great abuses by the state, but whether it’s a parking fine or somebody, potentially, being sent to jail for a more serious offence, you’re the last line of defence. So I think my contribution to mankind was in the human rights department in those early stages of my career and that’s what I wanted to do.

Well when I was seven I wanted to be a priest. Now, probably, knowing me, if I had become a priest I would have wanted to become the Pope. Then I realised that the church was not for me, so the next thing I decided to do was become a lawyer, so I wanted to be a partner at Hassans; that’s what I set my sights on becoming. Unfortunately, it’s not anywhere near as exciting as wanting to be a lorry driver or a fireman. I was a geek even at seven.
Well, I think that in my early legal work I was doing what I wanted to do. I think, like most lawyers, we eventually end up doing the sort of things that we didn’t really want to become lawyers to do, because it’s the more lucrative side of the legal market. I have progressed my desire to contribute to protect people’s rights by becoming a politician, in my view, because that is where you really start to create rights for people, and to ensure that the state doesn’t trample over people’s rights, at a legislative and social level. I’ve really enjoyed the little politics I have done to date, in the context of my life – it’s only been eight years that I have been actively involved in parliament – because of that, because I have seen how the mechanisms of the state can be moved against people and what a politician’s role is in trying to highlight that and stop that where possible.

Erm… Younger?
Leisure
What do you mean by young?
This kind of makes our next question defunct because we were going to ask you how close you had come to realising these hopes and dreams, but we suppose, to a degree, you have succeeded?
Ok… building on this idea then, we know it’s a bit of a standard job interview question but where do you see yourself 10 years from now? I’d like to think that Gibraltar will have changed the political colour of its administration long before then; that we will still therefore be entrusted by the people of Gibraltar with the administration of their affairs, and that my party will want me to be leading it, so, in exactly the same position I am today as party leader of the GSLP but in a different position in Parliament, namely as Chief Minister and not as Leader of the Opposition.
