Netbook or to netbook?
Hi and welcome back to the Geeks corner. There has been a not so recent trend towards smaller and smaller Laptops. I am going to concentrate on Net books which tend to ship without CD drives, which can be great for power consumption but not so good if your system crashes (and you need to use a recovery disk) or you want to have a dual boot computer. By crashing I mean you need to use the recovery options of Windows XP / Windows 7 and by Dual boot I mean when your computer starts up you have the option of say accessing Windows XP or Windows 7 or say a Linux or Mac based operating system or even all of them on one computer. There are many different ways to do this by far the easiest I have found is to use a program called Sardu (http://www.sarducd.it/) it differs from most Dual booting software as it provides support for CD’s, DVD’s or USB stick/pen-drives. That’s not the end of the story though as it has built in facilities for Multiple Antivirus tools and programs, it breaks down to Antivirus, Linux, Utilities and Windows. Essentially, it requires you to provide an ISO of the OS or Utility you require, these will need to be renamed as per the instructions (it’s all self-explanatory) the Dual boot creation program will compile this into a Dual boot for your memory stick and create it. Of course it’s necessary to have a memory stick with sufficient space for your OS ISO i.e. you would need at least a 4gb memory stick to contain Windows XP and Windows 7 because Windows 7 is about 2.3gb (I wont go into memory stick size increments here). As per my usual tips the program is free to use and opensource. They say “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, one of the easiest ways to mitigate potential system recovery problems is to ensure you have the System Restore option activated. It has been a busy month for the game industry, with not one, but three major releases. Bethesda brings us Skyrim, Ubisoft has Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, and Naughty Dog has Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. You may notice that these are all sequels and while it is worrying that none of these studios have an original thought between them, we shall forgive this transgression because the titles are wellestablished and more highly anticipated then the second coming as far as gamers are concerned. The majority of us don’t have the funds to go ahead and grab all three, so the decision falls to personal taste, and luckily the three don’t tread the same path. First we have Skyrim, a series from before the birth of the 360, a feat that the other two games cannot claim, Bethesda set the standard for RPGs with their engaging story, detailed environments and sheer unmitigated beauty. This will be the game of choice for you fantasy nerds; orcs, goblins, mages, dragons, Skyrim has them all, set in that particular Medieval era which all western RPGs must reside… by law. On paper, your average swords and mages romp, in practice, it is anything but, a gem of a game from a studio that has made a career of creating gems. Assassin’s Creed’s claim to fame is it’s quasi-historical setting filled with intrigue, murder, moral grey-areas and a city full of climbable walls. Think the Da Vinchi code as performed by Spiderman; the game plonks you in a vast playground of tall buildings, impossible jumps and equips you with a vast array of tools of the assassins trade to better jump/fly/kill and play to your heart’s desire, a game for your fun loving murderer. Last but not least we have Uncharted; Nathan Drake returns in search of more ancient artefacts. The game offers us Indiana Jones’ humorous quips with Lara Croft’s propensity for tomb robbing, a formula which, though dubious, is highly effective. The story is well paced and immersive, the voice acting is brilliant, characters are engaging and I even found myself stopping mid tomb-climb to admire the stunning views. There really is no wrong answer in this line up, if you’re so inclined; buy all three, each one represents a huge contribution to every taste and I doubt the season will be seeing many unhappy players. So how do we treat this largely annoying but potentially serious disease? There is a common misconception amongst the general public that antibiotics are the best treatment. However, influenza, as we know, is a viral infection, and therefore antibiotics will have no effect! Antiviral treatments do exist but these need to be started within 36 hours of the onset of symptoms and are largely reserved for individuals at risk of severe disease namely pregnant women, children under the age of 2, and individuals with respiratory problems. Vaccines give 70-90% protection against related viruses. Seasonal vaccines are available every year against current epidemic viruses; however, these too are largely reserved for those at high risk of infection, primarily elderly populations and health care workers. Otherwise treatment consists of rest and hydration, and paracetamol to relieve symptoms of fever and pain. Of course a lot of TLC from loved ones is also essential especially if you are suffering from as bad a flu as I am... Man Flu!!

Influenza is very common. Those at highest risk of succumbing to infection are the young, elderly, and those with underlying heart or respiratory disease. These individuals are also at increased risk of succumbing to the complications associated with influenza, the most important of which is a secondary bacterial pneumonia. This is when damage caused by the initial viral infection allows infection by bacteria into the lungs, resulting in a fever and a severe cough with thick greenish phlegm. The severity of infection and potential sequelae of influenza, coupled with its infectiousness results in 250,000 – 500,000 deaths per year world wide.

Flu is more prevalent during the winter months, when decreased ventilation and overcrowding helps facilitate its spread. The influenza virus itself is carried in the respiratory secretions of infected individuals and is therefore spread between individuals by coughing or sneezing. Disinfectants and detergents are effective at inactivating the virus, which is why frequent hand washing is promoted in hospitals to reduce the risk of spread of infection.

Influenza, more commonly known as the flu, is an extremely infectious disease caused by the Influenza virus. It typically presents with symptoms of malaise, fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, headaches, coughing, and generalised muscle aches and pains. Other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting are more prominent in children. Flu is often confused with other influenza-like illnesses such as the common cold which is attributed to other viruses such as rhinoviruses and coronaviruses, and presents with symptoms of a lesser severity.

Since Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation opened its doors in 1963 it has been an uncontested force in broadcasting, spending the entirety of its career as the only local news channel. Although a monopoly may be an advantage to the shareholders, people want variety, a change of pace, or just a change of face. Those people are now tuning in to Your Gibraltar TV; the online news channel that hit the airwaves on the auspicious day of 11/11/11. YGTV is an all-online channel broadcasting news, creating new feature programmes focusing on the local community, as well as interviews with local personalities. On the surface, it appears to be the average fare in terms of news reporting, but YGTV brings innovation to the table in many ways. Being an online show, they make use of all the powerful recourses available on the Internet to collect and disseminate news; their Facebook site, launched on the day of YGTV’s release has reached over 1100 members in a matter of days, not weeks, and this figure continues to grow daily; no small feat for a burgeoning company in such a close-knit community. Their news service is available in a minute-podcast for a quick update, or you can tune in to the recorded programmes which are available online. By far their biggest selling point though, is their slogan “YGTV is all about you”, the team report and create programmes of interest to the people. In particular, they accept the public’s input and suggestions on matters of importance to them. People can post topics for discussion on the Facebook page or contact them directly via the website. Their aim is to base their daily shows on the topics of the day as requested by the viewers. For those that want to take their contributions a step further, YGTV is happy to invite all who want to appear on the show, be it for an interview, debate or even just to discuss the latest buzz. Now, if online TV is not your forte, the written word is not forgotten. Yourgibraltartv.com includes a written news segment with more details on the day’s topics, as well as links and images on all the written news. Readers can also catch up on thoughts from the team with regularly updated blogs from the editor and other team members. In a bid to include every taste possible, even music lovers are catered for at YGTV. They aim to promote local talent with their music channel, one of the most recent additions to the YGTV repertoire. Having noted the strong link to music within Gibraltarian culture, which, in their words “is clear form the abundance of musical events, choirs and clubs in Gibraltar”, YGTV felt it was necessary to provide a forum for blogs and bios of Gibraltar’s musical personalities where visitors to the site can learn about the lives, loves, musical tastes and inspirations of all the sound artists around Gibraltar. The jewel in the music channel crown however, is the set of special mix tapes being prepared by local DJs, exclusively for YGTV. The internet is perhaps one of the most powerful forces at work in modern society. Information is so readily available that your phone will tell you your best friend’s latest thoughts via twitter, their location via Google maps and it’ll remember their birthday in case it slips your mind. It can teach you how to boil an egg or how to bake a three-tiered cake, it searches the topics you are interested in and it’ll do it all via voice command. This is the tool that Your Gibraltar TV is wielding as a new and innovative player in broadcasting news, music and feature programming. For the time being, it has breezed into Gibraltar like a breath of fresh air, and, with good use of this tool it will not be long before it becomes something much greater. pg 14
