BUSINESS CORNER

WHEN HEALTH ISSUES ARISE: ETIQUETTE FOR HANDLING A SERIOUSLY ILL EMPLOYEE This is a tricky situation to talk about. When you are running a liquid waste company you have a variety of employees to deal with. You have your crews that run the septic trucks, maybe some administrative employees, and everyone else involved in your business. Counting on them to make the business run smoothly is part of how a company works naturally. It’s like a wrench gets thrown into the works when someone is ill. Every person is essential to their part of the job. So what do you do when you have a treasured employee who becomes seriously ill? Sometimes this can happen out of nowhere with heart issues or diabetes taking them down for the count with chronic problems, or maybe it’s a cancer diagnosis that is impacting their life. When health issues arise, how do you as an employer handle it? Here are some etiquette tips for handling a seriously ill employee with the right care and intention. w w w. am er ica nliquidwa ste.co m

LET’S LOOK AT SOME OF THE LAWS FIRST Chronic illnesses fall under the Americans With Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), which was put into place in 2009. That means overall an employer can’t discriminate regarding employment based on an illness and has to make reasonable accommodations including an “interactive dialog.” This is one of the most important parts of the process for an employer to take to heart - good communication. Don’t shy away from that. You should be engaged with your employee enough to understand how they are doing with their illness. Make it a habit to ask how they are doing, in private, and if there is anything they might need from you to make it easier for them to work. Most employees who have a chronic illness still want to keep working, when they can. It also helps with the healing process, because a lot of people actually like their jobs and want to get back to their regular routine of work. AU G U ST 2 0 1 7 A M E R I C A N LI Q U I D WASTE 7

Let them know still how important they are to your team, because that helps give your employee purpose while they are trying to get well. HOW THE FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT WORKS The Family Medical Leave Act works to allow an ill employee to take up to 12 weeks off of unpaid medical leave. This includes caring for an ill family member, if that is the case. You have to hold their position when they return to the company. Keep in mind this act is only geared toward companies that have more than 50 employees. If you have less than that, it’s up to you on what you are going to offer. Most companies follow the policies of the FMLA anyway and put that in writing in their employee handbooks. WHEN AN EMPLOYEE IS IN THE HOSPITAL

health crisis, or even just treatment for a chronic illness, the right thing to do is to plan a visit, talk with the family, and in general offer your support. Just knowing that an employee’s job is safe and that they are missed sometimes helps with the healing process. Take the time to do what you can for that person and their family. Even a card, flowers, or just regular email contact helps during a serious time of treatment for an illness like cancer. ABOVE ALL BE HUMAN This isn’t the time to go into robot mode. Let your caring and genuinely empathic side show to the employee who is ill. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and compassion, especially during a time of medical crisis. Companies who aren’t supportive are naturally going to have employees, when they eventually come back to work, that are going to be resentful.

Some acknowledgement is the way to go here, etiquette wise. In the liquid waste industry, many owners work right alongside their employees on a very regular basis. You are probably pretty tight with your crews. That means if one of your employees ends up in the hospital for surgery, a

HOSES AND FITTINGS Every day you pull a hose, connect fittings, pump a tank. Handling hoses and fittings quickly become second nature to the pumper operator. These tools that you use every day are the factors that make each pumping job a joy or a headache. Here are some considerations to make your daily tasks run more smoothly. The position of the hose hooks on your tank will make a big difference in the ergonomics of your daily routine. Tank manufacturers set up their trucks differently with some tanks having very high hooks. You may consider having the hooks lowered to make handling your hoses more ergonomically friendly. This will also decrease your job site time and offer a safer environment for you and your employees. Cleanliness of your hoses is an important consideration. Cleaning your hoses at every job site usually only involves a fresh water tank on your truck or a borrowed garden hose from your customer. Clean hoses are easier to handle and will prevent waste leakage from site to site. Camlock fittings should also be cleaned to allow for proper function and ease of attachment. Camlock fittings will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. The stiff hoses usually make this a challenge and demand a lot of effort. There are various ideas of the best way to put on a new fitting (some of which can be very dangerous). 1 2 A ME RIC AN L IQUID WA S TE AU GU S T 2017

Pik Rite Inc. has developed a simple hose clamping mechanism that forces a new fitting on with ease. Tools like this can take a lot of frustration out of these common duties. Make sure to replace your hoses and fittings when they begin to show signs of wear. High-pressure equipment cannot be trusted when it is worn out and will place you and your employees in unnecessary danger. There are a variety of options when shopping for new hoses and fittings. Stainless steel fittings are more expensive up front but will last longer and need to be replaced less frequently. To sum it up, you handle your hoses and fittings often enough to consider small ways to make your day run more smoothly. Ergonomics, safety, and efficiency will all pay off in the long run! STORY BY KENT ENGLE -PIK RITE, INC. SPOTLIGHT

DAN STANLEY’S SEPTIC SERVICE AN INTERVIEW WITH DAN STANLEY Can you tell us a little bit about your personal background and how you got into the septic industry? Tell me how you were trained as well. My family started way back in 1954 with my great grandfather in the septic industry. So, that makes me the fourth generation of my family to do this kind of work. To tell you a little bit about my background, I went into the United States Army at age 17 and then spent two and half years in Iraq. When I got back my grandfather said “Why don’t you start your own company up North?” I was a natural fit, having grown up in the industry. That was about ten years ago in 2007. Now, I have a six-year-old little boy, Daniel, who “works” on the truck riding along with me a lot of the time. He already acts like the little boss man! 1 6 A ME RIC AN L IQUID WA S TE AU GU S T 2017

What does your business structure look like in terms of how many people work at your company? We have two and a half people working, including myself. My little boy is the half! It’s just mainly me running the trucks with one other person who does that as well. My fiance just started taking over the administrative duties, which I used to exclusively do for the business, but she’s tackling all the paperwork now. Before that I was doing it alone for 10 years.

What kind of research have you done to help you make smart choices about what kind of equipment you use, and can you outline some of that for us?

Vi s i t Us

I have about eight trucks that I run all by myself. Some of those include a Kenmore triangle 4500 gallon septic truck, an International 2300 gallon truck, a Peterbilt tractor-trailer with a 7000 backing trailer, and a Kenmore 6500 vacuum trailer, and an International dump truck, a Dodge service truck, and I do excavation too, so I have one of those that I also do work with.

Most of the time, we try to give out extra bonuses if we have a really good year. Family time is a huge thing with us, so we make sure to be understanding about that. That seems to help with morale overall. Tell me about your client base and the breakdown of the work you do between commercial and residential?

Can you breakdown the productivity of your company, as far as the service you mostly offer to your customers?

We have quite a bit of commercial accounts, although I would say that 75 percent of the work that we do is residential. It’s harder working with private citizens as opposed to commercial operations to say the least!

We mostly do pumping and repair work, sewer line cleaning, and that encompasses camera work as well, to snake into the pipe systems to get to the root cause of the issues people are having with their lines.

What problems do you confront on a daily basis in your septic industry and how do you handle them to keep the business running smoothly? Disposal sites are so difficult to come by. I wish there were more of those. As it stands, each site where we dump the waste just isn’t close by in any stretch of the imagination. For our city in Maine, the disposal site where we dump is about 50 miles away. It’s always an issue on an everyday basis to deal with. We just deal with it.

What are some of the features and services of your company that make you a vital part of your industry? Why would someone choose you over other options in the septic industry? Well for one thing, we don’t cut corners, we offer a good price on all of our services, and I’m on every job, so I make sure everything is done right and I’m always on the lookout for repeat customers. That’s basically how I make sure our business stands out from the rest of them in my area. What are your challenges that you’ve faced along the way after 10 years in the industry running your own company? Every step of the way is a challenge! When I first started out, I had just enough money to buy an old International truck that was tough to keep running right all the time. I was living on granola bars for three full years, and Ramen noodles just to get by with building the business and expenses. The trucks would break down over time, but luckily we’ve overcome all that for the most part. The early days were the toughest though, but everything is much better now. Even though you are basically the entire operation, how do you boost morale in your other worker? w w w. am er ica nliquidwa ste.co m

Named National Sales Manager in 2001 after his predecessor, Bob Gelman, passed away, Andy helped fuel General’s growth by developing a strong, knowledgeable sales rep force – and by forging a companywide commitment to training efforts. He joined General as a customer service representative in 1977. “On behalf of the Silverman family, we thank Andy for his years of quality service to General, and his valued contribution to the growth of the company,” Global Sales Manager David Silverman said. “We wish him all the best – and many years of happy, healthy retirement with his family and grandchildren.” Assistant Sales Manager Dave Dunbar, a 20-year veteran of General, will succeed Andy as National Sales Manager in October. FS SOLUTIONS CELEBRATES MORE THAN TWO DECADES IN BUSINESS

FS Solutions, a trusted source for industrial cleaning contractors across the United States, celebrates 21 years in business this year. In mid-1996, Federal Signal Corporation opened its first retail outlet in Pasadena, Texas, to service the large concentration of Guzzler vacuum truck customers in the greater Houston area. Known as “the Guzzler Store,” the small location, staffed by a manager and a mechanic, featured two service bays, a parts room and an office. “That original retail outlet was established to provide industrial cleaning customers with prompt parts support and expert service,” said Craig Aspinall, general manager, FS Solutions. “Since then, FS Solutions has become known as the one-stop shop for repairs, rentals, used equipment, parts and accessories, and training,” RETAIL OUTLETS BECOME FS SOLUTIONS CENTERS Following the opening of the Guzzler Store in 1996, seven additional locations were added in strategic locations across the United States and Canada. These locations provided customers with the technical expertise, service and parts support on a regional level. In 2007, Federal Signal’s Environmental Solutions Group, which at the time included Guzzler, Jetstream and Vactor, opened retail outlets in Alabama, Illinois and Texas. A rental location was also opened in Ohio. Federal Signal designated all four outlets as FS Solutions centers. w w w. am er ica nliquidwa ste.co m
