CONSTRUCTION SWEEPING
One of the leading causes of pollution cited by the EPA comes from construction vehicles tracking dirt out from construction sites. Sediment and other pollutants washed from trucks can quickly end up in other water bodies or stormwater, which is a violation of the Clean Water Act.
The number of companies offering quick-response and heavy-duty sweeping for the construction industry is relatively small. If you specifically want sweeping services for site cleanup, make sure you hire a contractor with a good amount of construction sweeping experience. It is also important they have the type of heavy-duty sweepers that are needed for the job.
EPA rules don’t list any specific techniques or equipment, however, they do mandate comprehensive pollutionprevention plans be in place for construction projects. And, they stipulate whatever plan is in place has to have a positive impact.
In most cases, mechanical broom sweepers such as the Schwarze M6 Avalanche are ideal for this application. The transverse-broom action of these types of sweepers is needed to remove that packed-down dirt and debris typically found on construction sites. The high dump feature of this type of sweeper allows the specialized equipment to remain on the job site by off-loading the debris into a dump truck that can then haul to a designated dump site. Street sweepers, equipped with dust control systems, also prevent dust from entering the atmosphere and polluting the air we breathe. On any job, you need someone capable of achieving the best possible results, especially under the most demanding conditions. When it comes to construction sites, this is especially true. The sweeper’s job can change almost hourly, and this means that each job site can potentially have a wide variety of new and interesting challenges. For over forty-three years in the street sweeping business, Schwarze Industries has been committed to providing an exceptional level of customer support. Schwarze offers one of the most comprehensive sweeper lines in the sweeping business. For additional information, visit the Schwarze® website at www.schwarze.com

CLEAN SWEEP PROPERTY SERVICES ARIZONA AN INTERVIEW WITH ARTHUR WELLS LEGER, PRESIDENT AND CEO How did your company begin and what areas do you serve? With $400.00 and perseverance. We are headquartered in Arizona and serve mainly the Phoenix, Scottsdale, and entire Maricopa County area. We also go into New Mexico, Texas, and California for some contracts that we have. Why did you get into the power sweeping industry? We decided to diversify from pressure washing, and then cultivate to a full service provider. What are your total employees and office locations? For the administration staff it’s five people total. The daytime crew of Mechanics/Maintenance/Sweeping/Power Washing Techs and Day Porters are about 21, and the night Supervisors/Maintenance/Sweeping/Power Washing Techs total 26. We have offices in Chandler, Arizona and one in Fort Worth, Texas.

How much growth has your business sustained in recent years with the upswing in the economy? No growth within the last few years, but we have shown a 15% growth in the last 9 months. How do you find new customers? Organically. Have you added on any recent services lately that are new to your brand? We are a full service facility that is growing in the garage service capacity of our business. Some of main services we offer are hot water and steam pressure washing, exterior custodial services, building

facade and window washing, and of course parking lot and street sweeping. We’re a one-stop shop for all property maintenance. How did you arrive at creating a unique brand for your company? With the ability to service large contracts extremely fast while not compromising quality. Luckily we have years of experience and thousands of happy clients. Tell me a little bit about the daily operations and how your workers shifts run for you?
We are EPA and CWA compliant of course. We also reclaim, filter out and try to reuse as much of the water waste that goes through our trucks to limit the amount of added water consumption. All of our pressure washing is also chemicalfree as well. How much do new technologies make a difference for your business in particular? Tons! Technology is always advancing and we will continue to progress with technology to provide services that are needed at a level that is expected.
All our employees are equipped with company iPads that provide organization to our operations, oversee worker timekeeping, run operational reports, view route statistics, and much more. This ensures our 24-hour, seven days a week operations run seamless to provide the customer the best service possible. What kind of policies and regulations do you have when it comes to environmental issues that are important to your company?

FOREIGN OBJECT DEBRIS FOD, or Foreign Object Debris, costs the aviation industry millions of dollars every year. This financial impact comes from direct costs such as damage to engines or airframes as well as indirect costs such as flight delays, cancellations, and lost revenues, schedule disruptions, and additional work by employees. More significant than the financial impact, however, is the safety impact and potential loss of human life.
ramps, aprons, and taxiways to remain clean and clear of any debris. Most airports conduct routine FOD checks where airport personnel will drive back and forth over the runways and taxiways looking for FOD that can potentially be material smaller than what can be seen by just glancing out over an open airfield.
Even a small screw can destroy a turbine that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars.
An administration should seriously consider implementing routine sweeping as a Best Management Practice (BMP) to reduce FOD at their airfields.
Some typical FOD found on runways include: • Fasteners (nuts, bolts, washers); • Aircraft parts (fuel caps, landing gear fragments, and tire fragments); • Mechanics’ tools; • Flight line items (nails, personnel badges, pens, pencils, luggage tags, soda cans); • Apron items (paper and plastic debris, luggage parts, and debris from ramp equipment); • Runway and taxiway materials (concrete and asphalt chunks, rubber, and paint chips); • Construction debris (pieces of wood, stones, fasteners and miscellaneous objects); • Plastic and polyethylene materials; • Natural materials (plant fragments, wildlife and even volcanic ash); • Contaminants from winter conditions (snow, ice). From private airports and heliports to the busiest international airports, it is critical for the airport runways,
w w w. n as weeper.co m
Sweeping is the most effective equipment for removing FOD from airfields. Sweepers remove debris from cracks and pavement joints and should be used in all areas, including aircraft maneuvering areas. The areas in which ground support equipment (GSE) is staged should be swept as well. Schwarze Industries offers several sweeper models specifically tailored for today’s complex airport infrastructure. Whether the facility needs a dedicated high-speed runway sweeper, a general all-purpose airport sweeper, a parking area sweeper, or a garage sweeper, you can count on a Schwarze sweeper to get the job done. KEEPING EMPLOYEES MOTIVATED I don’t claim to be a tremendous motivational speaker, but I do get excited talking about business. I especially enjoy working with small and medium-sized companies, so dealing with sweeping contractors is right up my alley. I love learning from our industry and have met some of the best people on the planet. This includes my own NiteHawk family; the good people here truly love their work. It’s not unusual for me to have to kick them out of the building at the end of the day! In working with clients and other business owners, I often hear that not everyone is as excited about their jobs as NiteHawk employees. After all these years in the business, I’ve discovered that unmotivated employees usual fall into one of three categories. In this article, I’ll describe the three groups and give you some tips on how to handle each. GROUP 1: STUCK IN THE PRESENT Sometimes an employee loses enthusiasm for his job because he can’t see a future. This individual has usually faced some kind of discouragement, either personally or professionally, and he has lost belief in himself and his own work. People in this group may have been discouraged by presenting a good idea that was never implemented, or they may not see opportunity for advancement. They may
14 NO RTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R JU LY 2017
have been negatively affected by a wage freeze, health challenges, or problems at home. These are good people looking for a reason to do better. Sometimes they do not even realize they are stuck in a rut. The key to motivating these individuals is straight forward and frequent communication, followed by action. In private meetings, or with others when appropriate, highlight the positive things this person does and can bring to the work. Reward forward thinking, and when an idea doesn’t seem to fit in the overall strategic plan, follow up to explain. If possible, change pay structures to incorporate bonuses for real improvement based on measureable metrics. At NiteHawk we’ve held contests where the winner receives an Ipod for the best new manufacturing improvement. It can be surprising how employees react when the company shows their appreciation. Show them that you recognize their contribution to the team and take a genuine interest in their wellbeing. If you don’t feel like this toward your team, look in the mirror and find a way, because you are one of the obstacles blocking their motivation. GROUP 2: READY TO GO, BUT NOT SURE WHERE The second group can see a future with the company, but the overall structure is not in place to appropriately reward
Vi s i t Us
Follow Us
them. Not only does this dampen the motivation of the employee, but also it prevents a company from achieving its objectives. As Cuba Gooding’s character Rod Tidwell said in Jerry Maguire, “Show me the money!” To confront your company’s internal barriers to employee motivation, start by reviewing the compensation structure of your sales team, supervisors, or whoever seems to be losing steam. Find ways to reward for performance, not for potential. Even as you increase available rewards, keep your expectations firm and clear. Holding the line can be difficult, but it will weed out the team members that don’t want to perform and provide a spark to the ones
that do. Every company is unique and there are thousands of different compensation structures to fit your business. Search around and find one that works for you. Reach out to fellow industry members (like me!) for fresh ideas. GROUP 3: NOTHING LEFT TO GIVE The last group may be the most disappointing, but the simplest to deal with. Some employees, for whatever reason, demonstrate that no matter what structure is in place, they are just not going to give you any more. If you’ve given them a chance with some of the above suggestions, and their behavior doesn’t change, the solution is relatively simple: fire, replace, and focus your attention on the people who really want to do better. People have written thousands of books on motivating employees. I have outlined just a few things which have helped our team and sweeping organizations around the country. Understanding and identifying your employees’ motivations is the key to developing a productive and efficient team. Lead by example, and if you ever feel like you’re losing your motivation, maybe all you need is a shiny new toy. Hey, I got an idea. How about a new sweeper? Tracy Day

5 EASY OFFICE UPGRADES TO DO RIGHT NOW It’s easy to let the years go by when you are running an office. You probably just go about your day and don’t really think about changing it up. Sometimes the little things you change around in your office space can make a big difference in productivity. These helpful suggestions don’t require a ton of money either, because that’s not the point. This isn’t about updating your entire computer system or redesigning the office space from head to toe, bringing in new flooring, desks, and chairs. It’s just about a few simple changes that can upgrade your space making it more workable. Here are five easy office upgrades to do right now for your sweeping company that will make a world of difference. Upgrade #5: Increase Your WiFi Speed This is an simple upgrade that only requires a quick phone call to your provider. Most companies will give you a complimentary upgrade for a limited amount of time to try it out before you commit to the extra charge. Making 20 NO RTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R JU LY 2017
your speeds faster can cut down on the lag time you are spending on the computer trying to get things done during your workday. You’ll be amazed at how different your entire computer system will feel after that one upgrade. Upgrade #4: Get Rid Of Things You Don’t Use You know that looking around the office there are some things you don’t use anymore that are out of date. That might look like old equipment, files of paperwork that are obsolete, and even extra office furniture that’s just sitting there collecting dust. Purge all that old stuff to give your office space a fresh new lease on life! Think of it as decluttering your space to allow you to move around and breathe a little better. That old coffee pot that no one uses anymore? Toss it out now. It’s almost like having a totally new office space when you get rid of junk that’s just getting in your way. This task doesn’t have to be done in one session either. Make it a week’s project Vi s i t Us

and commit to decluttering for about an hour a day, if you can spare it. Or a half hour will work if you can make quick decisions about what you want to get rid of.
your office staff is in a good mood, they are going to work harder for you. When running a sweeper company, you may not have many people working in your office on staff, but the ones you do will appreciate the natural lighting change.
Upgrade #3: Go Paperless As Much As Possible Upgrade #1: Add Some Greenery If you haven’t gone over to this environmentally friendly side of doing business, it’s time to start. Not only will this save you money in the long run, but it’s going to be much easier to store everything you need in a cloud-based system. Utilize a scanner. If you don’t have one, they aren’t that expensive to purchase for your office space. Once you get used to going paperless, you’ll never want to go back to an old school filing system. Think about how much money you’ll save on paper clips and staples alone, not to mention printer paper and very expensive toner.
Plants are a nice addition to the office space. Not only do they help to purify the air around you, but the greenery can make people feel happier. It’s a proven fact. They decrease stress levels, leading to greater feelings of wellness. They don’t have to be huge plants either, you can even benefit from a few strategically placed potted plants just on the edge of everyone’s desks. Some great plants to try are spider plants, succulents, jade, or sansevieria plants. Any of these will make a pretty and beneficial addition to your office space to instantly upgrade its appeal.
Upgrade #2: Let The Natural Light In If your office is dark and dingy, let some light in. Opening up just a few windows so that you have better view of the outside world can also help with productivity. So open up blinds, shades, and if you have old curtains it’s time to get rid of them. Natural light is an effective mood booster and when
