NON-CDL With their smaller wheelbases, non-CDL sweepers are very maneuverable, which is important when sweeping tight, confined areas. Non-CDL sweepers also tend to be lower in operating and maintenance costs and total cost of ownership.

the same expertise and skill set required for operating a CDL sweeper. Many of these smaller sweepers are also more userfriendly, allowing these sweepers to be easier to train new users to operate.

Municipalities are very budget conscious. Non-CDL sweepers are less expensive than full-size sweepers, and a non-CDL sweeper operator can be paid a lower wage than a CDL operator who earns a higher, premium wage in the marketplace. Operating a non-CDL sweeper does not require

While the process differs in many states, the testing involved to obtain a CDL tends to be strenuous and includes both written and a three-part skills exams. There are also a multitude of additional legal requirements that go along with running a CDL unit including training. This typically leads to a larger labor pool to choose from in a very competitive landscape. Generally, non-CDL units are going to have close to the same size engine due to emission controls today since we’re kind of limited to the size of the wheelbase for these units to get that equipment in there, but the suspension, axles and brakes will all be the same compared to a CDL-unit. Depending on the type of sweeping performed, a CDL unit may be appropriate. However, for light industrial applications, a non-CDL unit may the most cost-effective and beneficial tool. Be sure to work with the manufacturer to evaluate your needs and staffing concerns before making any buying decisions. SPOTLIGHT

SWEEPING SOUTH INC AN INTERVIEW WITH NICKI KNAPP, PRESIDENT AND OWNER How did your sweeping company start out?

the past few years with the economy getting better?

My husband and I purchased the company back in March of 2011. It was smaller back then. The previous owner had two trucks and just one employee before we bought the company.

We now have 11 street sweepers, six Tri axle dump trucks, two water trucks, two flat bed trucks, one small dump truck, one company pick up truck, and four attenuators. We started out with one employee to drive, my husband fixing the trucks while still working a full time mechanic job and driving when needed. I worked the office and was in general a gopher for whatever came up, but sometimes I drove as well. We have come a long way since the beginning!

Why did you get into the power sweeping industry in the first place? We were friends with the previous owner and he was looking for a buyer. He wanted to move back to his home state. My husband and I were a good fit for this company. He is a master mechanic and could keep the trucks running and I had a business background that applied to running the office and all aspects of a small business that dealt with the administrative side. What does your business model look like? Also, how many total employees and office locations do you have? We now have 22 employees and one office location here in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. That’s around the Charleston area.

How do you find new customers for your client base? Referrals, networking events, cold calls, DBE network through the SCDOT, our web site, keeping up with all the new construction projects in the area, and contractors associations. How many contracts do you deal with on average per week? It really varies. We work mainly in the construction industry, some companies like to use sub-contracts and some don’t. We currently have approx 40 active contracts that we take care of.

How much growth has your sweeper business sustained in 8 NO RT H AMERIC AN S WE E P E R AU GU S T 2017

Have you added any new service areas recently? We started out in the sweeping business and then expanded into hauling a few years ago. We work mostly in the construction industry and do a little parking lot work. One of my sweeping customers called me and said they had to cut my sweeper truck short that day and sent it home at midday. He originally had it booked for the whole day cleaning up behind dump trucks hauling dirt in and out of the job site. The reason he cut us loose was because he did not have enough dump trucks show up on that job for the day and he was not making as big of a mess to clean up as he had originally planned. My customer told me that there was a shortage of dump trucks in this area at that time. We had just bought our first tri-axle to work with our sweeping crew the week before. Back then we did not have enough county work to keep that truck busy all the time and I had intended to look for work for that truck when it was home and not busy working with the sweeper. The truck was hauling dirt the next day! We saw an opportunity and brought five more dump trucks over the next year and half. While the dump truck shortage in this area no longer exists, we managed to build a solid customer base with steady work.

How did you get to create a stand out brand for your company? We never say no! Some way, somehow we figure out a way to cover every sweeping job that comes our way! Even if it means getting someone out of bed at midnight to go and get in the truck! Our customers depend on that and we don’t let them down. Tell me a little bit about the daily operations and how working shifts operate? We work 24/7, but most Saturdays are not very busy. We do a lot of work with road construction and they work night and day. It just depends on traffic. Main roads are at night and neighborhoods are during the day. Our mechanics and office staff are on day shift, but our drivers work all shifts. We make out the schedule at the beginning of the week and adjust everyone’s time as needed to cover the workload as the bookings come in. It’s definitely not a nine-to-five gig.

What sweeping trucks, equipment, and machinery do you use the most? We use Tymco sweepers, 435, 600 and 500x. Our dump trucks are Kenworth T880’s. How does disposal work in your state of South Carolina? Most of our construction customers recycle on the job site. Our county contracts go direct to the landfill. What kind of strategies and concerns do you have when it comes to environmental issues? We recycle our used engine oil with the local power company and we strive to minimize and recycle our other waste. How much do new technologies come into play for your business? As far as technology, we use GPS tracking systems for each truck and we are looking to install tire pressure monitoring systems next.

WHY MOVE YOUR CAR? Street sweepers cannot eliminate all garbage and pollutants completely. People and businesses contribute such a significant amount of waste to the environment every day, over 250 million tons each year according to the EPA, that there are simply not enough street sweepers to keep up with the volume of work. Studies have shown that the majority of sediment and gathered pollutants congregates within three feet of street curbs. You may live in an area that uses street sweepers, and so you’ve experienced the obligatory “No Parking” days on your street. You may even be the unfortunate victim of a parking ticket for not observing street cleaning days. Of course, it can be a pain

to move your car one day a week, and it’s certainly annoying to get a ticket, but the benefits of street cleaning days far outweigh the inconveniences. But did you know that one parked car on the street leaves three car lengths un-swept on the street? Even the most skilled street sweeper drivers can only maneuver so well around a parked car. And since the curbs hold the majority of dirt and debris on the road, street sweeping in that section of road won’t help prevent debris from entering the air and water. So the next time you see a street sweeper, remember to move your car from the road on street sweeping days. 5 REASONS FOR TIRE FAILURE Nothing is more frustrating than a blown tire. When this happens, we often think the tire wasn’t strong enough, or there was some defect in the tire but 99% of the time, the causes of tire failure is entirely avoidable with a little more care and attention during routine maintenance or while sweeping. Here are five reasons for tire failure that can be easily avoided. 1 - UNDER-INFLATION One of the leading causes of tire failure is under-inflation. Tires that are under-inflated flex more in the sidewall and excessive flexing causes them to heat up far beyond normal operating temperatures, especially during hot weather. When the tire gets excessively hot, the rubber begins to degrade and when driven on too long, can lead to a rupture in the sidewall of the tire, or tread separation. The result is an immediate and rapid loss of air pressure, often accompanied by a loud bang as the tire explodes. 2 - OVER-INFLATING You can also overinflate your tires. People do these for various reasons, like trying to increase fuel economy, or just by accident. Overinflating your tires makes your tires susceptible to damage from things on the road, such as a pothole. Never exceed the maximum pressure rating on the side of the tire and always follow the OEM recommended inflation pressure for vehicle load and operating conditions. 20 NO RTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R AU GU S T 2017

3 - TOO MUCH WEIGHT Having too much weight on the tires can be a problem too. The best way to prevent this kind of failure is to check the load rating of your tires and making sure they match the application. If they do not, upgrade to a tire with a higher load rating. 4 – IRREGULAR WEAR DUE TO MECHANICAL ISSUES Misalignment or worn suspension parts are primary reasons a tire does not wear evenly. The tire will be completely worn on one side, or in one area of the tire, but perfectly good, with plenty of tread on the other parts of the tire. You’ll have no choice but to replace the tire, even if only 10% of the tread is worn through. That worn area will be the weakest and the most susceptible to flats and also contributes to poor traction and ride quality. Other wear patterns indicate other types of mechanical problems. The most common is wear associated with wheel misalignment. In this case, one or more of your wheels and tires are going down the road at different angles, or with too much camber built into the wheel set up. In both cases, rubber ends up wearing faster on one side of the tire compared to the other. Broken suspension parts, worn or loose bearings or bushings create a wobble in the wheel and tire. Over time this wobble manifests itself in the tire tread rubber, either as cupping on the shoulder tread blocks or as diagonal stripes of wear across the surface of the tread. These wear patterns Vi s i t Us

indicate a severe suspension issue that needs to be addressed for safety reasons and the sake of the tire tread life.

period. A bar magnet mounted to the front bumper can pay for itself quickly if sweeping in an area subject to these type of hazards.

5 - ROAD HAZARDS If you are sweeping down the road and hit a pot-hole, or run over an obstacle in the road, the tire takes the full brunt of the impact. If the impact is hard enough, the sidewall of the tire will compress and be squeezed between the object and the wheel flange. This “pinch-shock can cause a chunk to come off the tire or a large crack to form on the sidewall where the cords have broken. If you see a bulge like that on any of your tires, it should be removed and replaced as soon as possible. If not replaced, the tire could eventually fail. While some tires may be slightly more resistant to irregular wear, over time even the most expensive, premium tires will be replaced early compared to tires on a well-maintained and correctly aligned vehicle. Any tire professional or service technician can identify wear patterns on a tire tread associated with mechanical issues.

Nails and screws can also puncture tires causing rapid deflation or a slow leak that manifests itself over a longer

The best way to get the most mileage out of your tires and to prevent a blow-out is to ensure your sweeper is in good operating condition, check your tire air pressure regularly, and drive carefully to avoid road hazards.

IN THE NEWS WORLD SWEEPING ASSOCIATION’S SWEEPER ROUNDUP - SEPTEMBER 15-17, 2017 At North American Sweeper Magazine we take industry education very seriously. We also know the value of people in our industry getting together to share ideas and get to know one another. That’s why we are proud to be one of the sponsors of America’s first ever, independent sweeping conference, the World Sweeping Association’s ‘Sweeper Roundup.’ The Sweeper Roundup, which will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, this coming September 15-17, is the brainchild of two longtime industry leaders. The event is the result of a conversation between Ranger Kidwell-Ross, Director of WSA, and Gale Holsman, President of Kansas City-based American Sweeping, Inc. At this year’s National Pavement Exposition they discussed the fact that there had never been an independent conference just for the sweeping industry. The result: Gale volunteered his company to host such an event if WSA would organize it. The Sweeper Roundup will feature four educational seminars put on by individuals who average over 30 years of sweeping industry experience. A Sweeper Roundtable will allow attending contractors to query WSA’s Contractor Advisory Board members as well as representatives from at least half-a-dozen sweeper manufacturers and leading industry suppliers. Saturday afternoon’s events will be held at Gail’s Harley Davidson, one of the largest H-D dealers in America. Sweepers by Elgin, Global, NiteHawk, Ravo and Schwarze will be on display and available for demos. Schwarze is providing its Vortex model for use in a zany Sweeper Rodeo designed to test the driving skills of attending contractors. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of areas. In the evening, the venue will switch to Holsman’s Stables, a beautiful 200-acre horse ranch, with a barbecue cookout, hay rides and live music by one of KC’s top bands. The night’s entertainment will also include an appearance by ‘The Sweeper Band,’ made up of sweeping industry musicians, who will perform several sweeping-themed songs based upon familiar tunes from the past. Proceeds from the Sweeper Roundup benefit WSA’s Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contractors can attend this tax-deductible event for as little as $99/each and event hotel rooms have also been negotiated for $100/night. For more information and to sign up to attend, go to: www.WorldSweepingPros.org/roundup/. You may also call the WSA office, toll free, at 866.635.2205 or send email to director@worldsweepingpros.org.

BUSINESS CORNER

SHOULD YOUR SWEEPING COMPANY OFFER PATERNITY LEAVE? Paternity leave is a hot button topic in our country right now. Of course, maternity leave is mainly focused on because it involves the mother, but shouldn’t the father of a new baby have some consideration too? As a business owner of a sweeping company, it’s up to you on your procedures and policies regarding this matter. It depends on what state you live in as well. You can be generous and progressive, or on the flip side you can stick to the old ways and be fairly stingy with paid time off for new fathers. The question then becomes, should your sweeping company offer paternity leave? The obvious answer is “yes” and here are a few reasons why this is an excellent policy to have in place. Not only does it greatly benefit the father, but your company will reap some rewards in the end.

MOST COMPANIES DON’T HAVE PAID PATERNITY LEAVE It’s true that most companies don’t have paid paternity leave, but it shouldn’t be a reason to follow that oldfashioned band wagon. Times are changing, and more and more companies are considering how important a well rounded lifestyle is in their employees’ lives. That includes being able to spend time with family, with more paid or vacation benefits. When a man becomes a father, it’s vital to have that early time with a newborn baby. Not only does this help for bonding, but it also allows the parents to work better as a team to take care of their newest family member. A more stable household means your employees will come to work better able to do their jobs and not be distracted.

CALIFORNIA IS LEADING THE CHARGE ON THIS California overall is more progressive than many other states. They are the first to offer a “paid family leave” usually for up to six weeks that will allow a father to help care for the baby and get paid at the same time. Other states following this example are Rhode Island and New Jersey, according to Babycenter.com, a popular parenting website. Hopefully all states in the future will pass this type of legislation to make it easier for dads to be there for a newborn’s first precious days.

THE MLB IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF NEW ATTITUDES An example of an industry that is changing their ways from how things used to be done is Major League Baseball. For sports they are the only professional league out of all of the major sports (NBA, NFL, and NHL) to offer a specific paternity plan. Back in the old days, if a dad-to-be was on the road with his team, he was more than likely going to miss the birth of his child. Most players were even afraid to ask for a day off to go see their new baby! They didn’t want to jeopardize their standing with the team by missing games. The Commissioner of baseball and a committee decided back in 2011 that all

players would be provided with three days of paternity leave. Players can feel comfortable missing a few games to be with their family, if they so choose. YOUR BOTTOM LINE AS A BUSINESS OWNER As a sweeper company, paying for paid paternity leave is going to cut into your bottom line, but not by much. Think of how much harder your team will work for you, productivitywise, when they have the right benefits and paid time in place. Studies have shown like this one about “Workforce Well Being,” that companies who are more progressive, even in old school blue collar work (construction or sweeping), who offer better benefits have happier employees. They will be less stressed out about finances and more able to focus on their jobs. Productivity is much higher, which in turn makes more money for the company. What could be a more financially stressful time then bringing a new baby into the household? Make it a little easier on your employees by doing the right thing and offering paid paternity leave. It’s a win-win for everyone.
