Sweeper Roundup a Rousing Success America’s first-ever independent conference for power sweeping contractors was held in Kansas City, MO, the middle weekend of September. The 2017 Sweeper Roundup (tm), organized by the World Sweeping Association, brought nearly 100 people involved in power sweeping together for an educational experience that also emphasized fun. The Roundup received widespread support from the sweeper manufacturing and aftermarket community. Sponsors, in addition to North American Sweeper Magazine, included Elgin Sweeper, Global Environmental, Keystone Brushes, MASCO, Maximus Insurance Agency, NiteHawk, RAVO, Schwarze Industries, Used Sweepers of America and Well Made Manufacturing. The event’s Friday night kickoff provided an opportunity for everyone to get acquainted on an informal basis. Attendees took over the top floor of a restaurant for a party that included the screening of the 2002 sweeper episode of the Junkyard Wars television show, on which engineers from Schwarze and Elgin faced off to build competitive air and broom sweepers from junkyard parts. The leader of the winning team, Jim Adair, now Schwarze’s Director of Product Management, was in attendance. That only added to the 6 NO R TH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R O C TO BER 2017

enjoyment. Contractors uniformly praised all four of the seminars held the next morning. One of these, ‘Maintenance to Minimize Downtime and Maximize Vehicle Longevity,’ was streamed on WorldSweeper.com’s Facebook page while it occurred. Presenters answered questions posed by Facebook viewers in real time and, as of 10 days later, a total of 875 people had been to the seminar link. The seminars were followed by a ‘Lunch-and-Learn’ session where some of the industry’s most pressing issues were discussed. Eight sweeper manufacturers had more than a dozen sweeper models on display during the Roundup. There was also a ‘Sweeper Rodeo.’ Members of WSA’s Advisory Board laid out cones to create a challenging course. More than twodozen participants were timed as they navigated a Schwarze Gale Force through it. In addition to trying to get the fastest time and fewest cone-touching penalties, midway through participants stopped for 15 seconds to try to blow an assortment of simulated debris — including a wet diaper — into a small plastic crate. The course ended with each driver attempting to back in a curve between twin rows of ‘penalty grapes’ Vi s i t Us

to see how close they could get to a dumpster without actually hitting it. Hilarity ensued. Top time was turned in by Tobias (Toby) Weissenrieder, a representative of German sweeper manufacturer AebiSchmidt. Toby’s German Autobahn experience perhaps helped him attain the lowest total time, after penalties and mark offs, of one minute and 41 seconds. Legend has it that at one point while going around a sharp corner on the course Toby even had the Gale Force up on two wheels. You had to be there to know for sure. The evening portion of the Roundup was held at the Holsman Stables Event Center, also owned by Gale Holsman, president of host sweeping contractor, American Sweeping, Inc. In addition to a campfire, live music, hayrides and BBQ from legendary KC restaurant, Jack Black’s, attendees were treated to a gorgeous sunset combined with a distant lightning display that took place over the outdoor stage where one of Kansas City’s top bands, the Selle Brothers, was playing. Simultaneously, a rainbow appeared in the opposite direction over the food tent, adding even more magic to the first-time affair. Industry sponsors also donated a wide variety of items to an ongoing raffle, with the grand prize a scale model of

w w w.na sweeper.co m

a vintage Elgin Whitewing sweeper that was hand-made by sweeper aficionado, McKinley (Kenny) Page. The raffle raised nearly an additional $1,000 in donations toward the World Sweeping Association’s Memorial Scholarship Fund, to which all proceeds of the Roundup were earmarked. The Fund provides higher education scholarships for students connected to the power sweeping industry. As of press time the total raised by WSA’s Sweeper Roundup had not yet been tallied. Complete coverage of the Sweeper Roundup is available via a prominent link on WSA’s website at www. WorldSweepingPros.org. Need for a change in Vacuum Sweeping Technology Pure vacuum sweepers are great for removing fines from gutters and pervious pavement. Operating like giant vacuum cleaners, they remove debris from the surface with ease and depositing it into a debris hopper. However, the fan air is then simply exhausted out of the body, still laden with fines, and that is just one of the many drawbacks of a typical pure vacuum sweeper. Additional shortcomings of most available pure vacuum sweepers on the market today include:

Broom Wear - Because of the long length of the sweep tube broom and its inability to follow the contours of the road, sweep tube brooms wear uneven and quickly, especially on those highly crowned roads. This is made even worse because the brooms are typically made from polypropylene.

Small Side Brooms - The small side brooms on vacuum sweeper never seem to be able to reach debris deep in the gutter. Even when the debris can be reached, the small lightduty brooms just can’t handle the heavy load of a typical spring clean up.

Dust-laden Exhaust - Vacuum sweepers re-release a substantial amount of debris and particulates into the atmosphere, which has been the subject of many regulations in several states across the country.

Small Vacuum Pickup Path - Vacuum sweepers are restricted to a sweeping path of about 28 to 32 inches. A wide sweep tube broom is required to transfer materials from under the sweeper and into the nozzle path. Because vacuum sweepers often cannot operate with both gutter brooms, multiple passes are necessary to remove debris from the road completely. Unable to Pick Up Heavy Debris - Heavy materials also pose significant challenges to the typical wide sweep tube broom. Not only does a wide sweep tube broom struggle with heavy material, but it also has trouble sweeping highly crowned roads. Another disadvantage of vacuum sweepers is that the sweep tube broom tends to fill pavement irregularities with debris that the suction effect isn’t strong enough to remove

w w w.na sweeper.co m

Small Nozzle Hoses - The nozzle hoses on vacuum sweeper are often as small as 8 inches in diameter, and more likely to become plugged with larger debris.

Schwarze recently announced the development of a pure vacuum sweeper that will solve these shortcomings. The sweeper will be available early 2018 and will be sold through Schwarze’s extensive dealer network. Story by Maxx Hendriks, Product Evangelist at Schwarze Industries

The challenge within the sweeping industry today is successfully igniting the passions of innovation while remaining focused on delivering the operational excellence required to sustain a company. There is no compromise in keeping the operation running effectively and efficiently, so how do you integrate a focus on innovation without jeopardizing the emphasis you’ve placed on building quality sweepers? When you’re thinking about creating a focus on innovation for your company, it is wise to ask yourself the following questions: • How do I organize to deliver innovation? • What talent do I need and do I have it today? • Is our culture able to not only giving birth to innovative ideas but also nurturing them to success? Organize How to organize for innovation can be assessed from the perspective of what part of the team you are charging with 1 0 NORTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R O C TO BER 2017

delivering the innovation and how much time you are asking them to spend on it. Commonly, companies take two paths. The first entails challenging all members of the team to deliver innovative ideas and commit 10 to 20 percent of their time driving it. The other approach involves dedicating a dedicated team 100 percent of the time. Both have their pros and cons, but generally, the best approach is to start with the first scenario to get the team members trained and conditioned around the expectations, challenges, and potential of delivering innovation. When done right, you’re able to get a read on the real capabilities of the team. Then, you can evolve into scenario two. At this point, you’ve seen who are the champions that can think, act, and deliver on the mission. And you’ll have a better idea what talent gaps you’ll have to fill through hiring. Talent Conduct a critical assessment of the talents in your company and their ability to innovate. Give team members an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to think or create Vi s i t Us

Follow Us

nonlinearly. Their current job is most likely routine, constrains them to think in linear, logical patterns and fails to inspire creativity or innovation. And don’t be afraid to shake it up a bit by moving people around, entrusting them to work on special projects. This will help you assess their broader skill set. Culture Why culture? Mainly because any good harvest requires the right combination of rain, sun, and soil. The absence of any of these three factors can hinder the growth of even the best seeds! It’s important to assess your company’s culture against the requirements to achieve good innovation. Many companies have to isolate, incubate, or create new environments or departments to ensure they can formulate the right factors to encourage creativity and innovation. This is the hardest to do when it comes to balancing between innovation and day-to-day operations because you do not want to separate it from the core business. And while your initial reaction will be to hold this “special project” close to giving it all the support and money it needs for success, often it just needs room to spread its wings and grow. Every team member needs to be charged with knowing the business and the challenges the company is trying to solve.

w w w.na sweeper.co m

It is imperative that the team learns firsthand the voice of the customer, as well as what creates value in the industry. The team has to feel inspired to work on a solution that addresses a need and empowered to experiment and create prototypes to fill those needs. And most importantly, you want their efforts to be visible to their peers and leadership. If the team has to ask for permission to innovate, then your company has already failed innovation. Identifying the right team to cut loose on innovation is going to produce the change every company needs.

How To Deal With Chronic Employee Tardiness

IN THE NEWS

A S S O C I AT I O N I N S I D E R

INDEX

You expect as certain level of professionalism from your employees at your successful sweeping company. One of those expectations is for any of your employees to be on time. This is everyone from your office staff, to your crews that run the sweeper trucks each shift, and so on. Being on time is a vital part of their good standing at your company. With that being said, everyone has their moments that they are running late on occasion, which is understandable. But when it becomes a chronic lateness issue with an employee, it may be a serious problem. How much you tolerate as a business owner is up to you, but here are some guidelines how to how to deal with chronic employee tardiness. Outline A Tardiness Policy When your employees know what to expect, they will have a better time sticking to that plan. Outline a specific policy that shows each employee how many late days are 1 2 NORTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R O C TO BER 2017

acceptable, before some kind of disciplinary action is taken. It’s also a good idea to define what “late” may be for them, especially if they have to punch a time clock electronically. Some employers allow a window for clocking in, where the employee isn’t considered late until it’s eight minutes past the hour. So for example, if their shift starts at 7:00 AM they aren’t considered late until it’s 7:08 AM. Having a window or “grace period” gives them a little considerate “wiggle time” to be considered not late. Of course it’s up to you as the employer, if you want late to be 7:01 AM in that same scenario, that’s your prerogative. Check With Your State On Specific Guidelines The United States Department of Labor set the Fair Labors Standards Act, which outlines some hourly clock-in rules and grace periods. With that being said, it does vary a little by state, so check with your state labor department, if you want Vi s i t Us

Follow Us

to learn its specific rules. Grace periods aren’t necessarily mandatory in all states, but you probably have a feeling on this one way or another. Plus, you may already know the rules in your state and probably have let your employees know what you expect when you hired them. Employees will push your boundaries, but it’s up to you to tell them exactly what you want from their performance. If they violate being on time so often that’s it’s becoming an issue, you have to go to the next step. Sit Down With The Late Employee For A Discussion When you notice an employee has a chronic lateness issue, it’s time for a chat with them. Bring them into the office at a planned time to discuss your expectations. It’s up to you on whether or not you want to pry into the reasons why they are late, or you can just draw a hard line on the situation with them and ask directly for improvement. Outline the

consequences if they don’t remedy their tardiness. Dealing with it sooner, rather than later, will also give your crew member the opportunity to correct their behavior. Follow Through On Your Expectations And Policies Keep tabs on the person who received the warning about lateness. If you let it go, your employees will think you don’t take this kind of inconsiderate behavior towards your company very seriously. That’s not how you want to run your sweeping company, is it? By letting your employees walk all over you? Probably not. Show that you care and follow through with your requests on time management. Having to let go or terminate an employee who doesn’t care about being on time might be the end result. At least it will show your entire work force that you are serious about them getting to work in a timely manner. Story by Katherine Nolan

Fleet Optimization: Alternative Strategies before You Buy

At NiteHawk, we’ve been building the highest quality sweepers on the market for over twenty years. We’re driven beyond manufacturing goals. For us, the real joy of our work comes from helping small businesses grow and succeed. It’s important to us that any customer looking to purchase a new sweeper does so at the right time for their business. If you own a sweeper company, one of the biggest questions you probably face is this: do I have the right size fleet, and how do I know when to expand? Optimizing your fleet size, or “rightsizing,” is crucial to running a successful operation. Besides helping you build and maintain an efficient sweeper fleet, rightsizing will help you lower maintenance costs, establish consistent levels of usage, and ensure effective delivery of services to your clients.

1 6 NORTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R O C TO BER 2017

The US Department of Energy offers a helpful guide [1] for the optimal operation of vehicle fleets. These seven questions come from an article specifically on fuel efficiency, but thinking about these issues can help you improve efficiency for your overall operation: 1. What is the ideal number of vehicles needed to meet your fleet’s needs? 2. What job does each vehicle perform and how important is it? 3. Are there any vehicles that can be cut because they are cost prohibitive to use or no longer fulfill a defendable purpose? 4. Are your vehicles being optimized for type, class, and size? 5. Are there vehicles that are either never or rarely utilized? 6. Can you replace certain vehicles with lighter, more fuel-

Vi s i t Us

Follow Us

efficient options? 7. Are options available, such as sharing vehicles between agencies or short-term rentals? Before you decide to add a new sweeper to your fleet, consider if your existing vehicles are utilized at optimal levels of efficiency. If you’re experiencing increased client demand (and we hope you are!) think about ways your current fleet’s performance can be improved and expanded: • Routing: Some of your sweepers might be able to produce more work at lower costs by making changes to their routes. Critically examining routes is especially important as you add clients, because new locations may open up alternate route possibilities that can make a single vehicle more efficient. Talk to your drivers about the routes they currently take, and use their knowledge of the area to assess the best way to cover all clients. • In-House Maintenance and Repairs: You may be wasting money by outsourcing repairs and maintenance that could be done in-house. If your fleet is large enough, investing in your own tools and maintenance training will save you time and money. Your trucks will get off the blocks and back on the road faster. You’ll also have the benefit w w w.na sweeper.co m

of knowing exact costs for parts and labor, which may be marked up by third party mechanics. • Driver Training: Your trucks might be incurring more costs because employees are not driving them properly. Research shows that especially for medium and heavy-duty vehicles, driving above 55 mph can decrease fuel efficiency by 15%. Excessive idling is also a problem. An idle engine runs at a lower temperature; this not only burns fuel less efficiently, but it leaves residue on plugs and cylinders which causes even more inefficiency over time.[2] Establishing and reinforcing driver policies related to speeding and idling will save on fuel in the short run and make your vehicles last longer over time. Before making a significant investment, make sure that your current fleet is performing at the highest level possible. We are excited to help our clients grow their businesses the right way, and we are confident that with enough growth adding sweepers to your fleet will be the right move. Story by NiteHawk Sweepers

SPOTLIGHT

BZ & Son’s Sweeping and Washing Inc. An Interview with Bob Stumpf How did your company begin? My dad started in 1986, working for a gentleman that got into it by accident. I was 25 years old and in the Navy at the time. His health was starting to fail in the later part of his life and I was overseas in Spain at the time. He asked me if I wanted to take over the business. The wife and I talked, I drove a sweeper in the summer while I was in high school, so it was something I knew all about. At the time it was fun going around to all the little towns working the sweeper trucks. I retired out of the navy in 2003 and by October I bought the business from my father and that’s how I got back into it professionally. Up until then I would just help him out on the side and moonlight with other sweeping companies. That helped me figure out what kind of trucks I wanted and didn’t want. What is your business model look like? Your total employees and office locations? Well, when I retired from the Navy we were working out of my dad’s house in a two bay garage that I would do 2 8 NORTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R O C TO BER 2017

maintenance in. I had a friend from California that was a mechanic, so were were doing maintenance when I bought a third sweeper truck and quickly outgrew it. In 2004, we went from a “mom and pop” to a corporation instead of a sole proprietor. Then in 2006, we ended up getting into a larger business model. We have eight sweeper trucks. For office work, we have two employees, not counting me, because I kind of run around attending to lots of things. My wife is actually the office manager. She does the office and has a person working with her. I have a full time mechanic and five dedicated sweeper truck drivers. Six, if you count me. How much growth has your business sustained in recent years with the upswing in the economy? It didn’t affect us per say as a losing business, we just weren’t growing as fast. Up until then we had about 6 % growth each year. And then it plateaued. For example, Walmart has been with us since day one before supercenters were built. As they expanded we expanded. They fluctuated, so did we. It depends on how they were doing. When we started, we did strictly parking lots. Today there isn’t anything I don’t sweep! Industry, Vi s i t Us

and found out that few were doing their own sweeping. I got a mid-grade truck and from there we did one little city. It was a big success. Then I went to the next town and so on. That’s how we started and established ourselves with city sweeping. We have 14 now. Tell me a little bit about the daily operations and how your workers shifts go? Yes we run 24/7 nearly. The night shift starts at 9:30- 10:00 PM, the day shift is the city guys starting around 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM, depending on the city and what part we are doing. commercial, and residential. I run various kinds of sweepers from the Tymco 600 to the Tymco 210. How do you find new customers? In the early days, I was a door-to-door salesman sorta speak. I would show up to a commercial business and simply knock on the door. I had about 15 seconds before they closed the door! I would say “hey I’m thinking we can do some business if you give me about 15 minutes of your time.” Most of the time I was lucky with 15 seconds. They would say initially I’m out of their budget range, but then I would convince them to open the door for me. But now, it’s word-ofmouth mostly. A good portion is referrals and the website has been up for three years, but that’s been slow. How many contracts do you execute per month? I think we do about 30 per month. Have you added on any new services lately? We added landscaping recently. Well put it this way, we did mowing and trimming as part of customer’s total package of making their parking lot look presentable. We started with a small mower and moved to a zero turn, with a weed eater. The mowing industry only encompases the sweeping clients we have. If I sweep you, I’ll mow as well if they want that. I don’t just solely mow. The buzzword is bundle and it works.

How did you arrive at creating a unique brand for your company? Now that’s the big success of BZ and Son’s, for years my father was a parking lot sweeping guy only, he did a lot of lots with a small sweep. One of the things that I got introduced to in the industry was sweeping small municipalities, when I retired from the Navy in 2003, we looked at changes to make when we incorporated. We discovered the fact that nobody in the area was doing city sweeping. So we did some research 3 0 NORTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R O C TO BER 2017

What sweeper trucks, equipment, and machinery technology do you use? Tymco, solely Tymco man here. They are the best sweepers ever made. The IDS company I buy them from have service beyond belief. How does disposal work in your state? I have a partnership with a solid waste company that provides dumpsters for me. So I run it through their place where the dumping takes place. What kind of strategies and policies do you have when it comes to environmental issues? For cleaning, I have two big things working on my side. That will help when it comes to sell the business eventually. The look of my company is great. The second one is the EPA and the Clean Water Act is a huge tool I work in. Sweeping is considered the best maintenance practice for cities to keep their drains and natural water sources clean, which is a big selling point for me. How much do new technologies factor into your business? It’s getting complicated. We are now in a takeover by third party companies, that want to go in and buy blocks of businesses. For example, Walmart has service channels that hire the vendors to take care of their properties. They were sold and the problem is these companies don’t have the right equipment. They have computers and tracking systems that utilize smartphones. In rural Texas, GPS is not working that well or at all even. It’s a pain to deal with these companies to do a simple sweeping job. Anything else you’d like us to know about your company? It is family owned. That’s important to us. Please feel free to check out our website it’s http://www.bzandsons.com/

Why Buying Used is a Better Value than Renting The increasing costs of buying new machinery makes renting sweepers more appealing for contractors. The general rule-ofthumb rental representatives tell you is that if you do not plan to utilize a machine for 65 to 80 percent of the time, you are better off renting. By renting, you only pay for equipment when you are using it and do not have to pay for idle machines when you aren’t working. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, while that rule may be valid when comparing the costs of renting versus buying a new sweeper, it does not apply when you look at the value of used sweepers. In many instances, buying used sweepers will keep your equipment investment low, giving you higher returns. The truth is, the value of most equipment drops 20-40 percent in its first year, and after the first year, the value flattens out and remains steady for many years to come. Plus, if you properly maintain your sweeper, you’ll have a valuable business asset that you can sell or trade-in on your next machine, something you don’t get when you rent. You don’t have to utilize the sweeper 80 percent of the time to still come out ahead when buying used. Get Exactly What You Want, When You Need It Rental sweepers have the widest appeal to its customer base. That means you won’t likely find job-specific machines in rental fleets or sweepers with a lot of extra options. So, if you need a sweeper with a magnet bar or high-pressure washdown option, there is a big chance you’ll be out of luck. And more than likely, you’ll be left waiting for more than a month if you try to add an option. Your best bet is to shop for used. There are plenty of sweepers to choose from, and there is no waiting. If you decide you need a magnet bar or heavy duty bumper, you can add one right away, especially if you buy directly from the factory. Lower Monthly Expense Buying a new sweeper can tie up a lot of operating capital, 3 2 NORTH AMERIC AN S WE E P E R O C TO BER 2017

which is another reason renting is growing in popularity. Renting doesn’t require a down payment, and you’re only on the hook for the rental fees. However, when you buy used sweepers, you don’t need such a large down payment for a financed purchase, and on top of that, your monthly payments will be much lower. Depending on how much you’re paying in rental fees every month, financing a used sweeper purchase may be able to reduce your monthly equipment expenses, and at some point, you’ll be done making payments on your purchase altogether. Tax Benefit The cost of renting a sweeper can be written off on your taxes. However, you’ll be able to lower your tax obligations more through asset depreciation of a used sweeper, and you will also be able to write off insurance, equipment taxes, repair and service expenses and transportation costs. Go ahead and consult a tax advisor to help you compare the saving of buying used machinery versus renting. New Rule-of-Thumb for Renting Purchasing quality used sweepers gives you reliable machinery at the best price, saving you money now and later. So, the rule for renting should really be: “Rent sweepers that you don’t utilize more than 20 to 30 percent of the time. For everything else, consider buying a used sweeper.” For over forty-three years in the street sweeping business, Schwarze Industries has been committed to providing an exceptional level of customer support. Schwarze offers one of the most comprehensive sweeper lines in the sweeping business. For additional information visit the Schwarze® website at www.schwarze.com
