appreciating change This school year brings a new reality into our world. A college student (I can’t even say those words out loud without tissues nearby), a senior (more tissues) and a sophomore at a new school (and more tissues). Each year I think I will be able to coast by with some normalcy, but as every parent knows, no two years, or two kids, are alike. Through the years, if I have learned anything, it's that all kids, even kids who are the same gender and born to the same parents within a very short time spam (I had all my boys within 3.5 years), are all very different. From the foods they eat, to their educational needs and wants, they all require specific support for their own success. As parents, we do it all to get them where they need to be, even if it means causing chaos and throwing all plans to the side. When it comes to educational options, our community offers a plethora of schooling

choices to pick from. From private to public, charter to Catholic, magnet programs to Montessori, we have it all! When it came time for his junior year in high school, my oldest decided it was time to part ways with his current high school and enroll in the Agriscience program at Santa Fe High School. He wanted to hang with cows and play with farm equipment. And, when my youngest wanted to learn more about finance and enroll in drafting courses, he made the switch to Buchholz to be a part of the Finance Academy.

Every school year is a fresh start. Whether your kiddos are at their same school or moving to a new space, they have the opportunity for greatness and wonderful experiences to thrive as individuals and blossom into who they are supposed to be.

While it would have been easier for dad and me to have them all in one school, we wanted our kids to feel heard and acknowledge their different personal goals. I won’t lie, it was hard from me, as I do not like change or driving kids all around town in the morning traffic, but I knew it was the right choice. The smile on my kids’ faces and the ability for them to pursue their own passions was all the proof I needed.

Wild About Watermelon! BY MICHAELA BEEDA

Summer is coming to a close, and what better way to wrap up the days spent in the sun than enjoying a sweet fruity treat? Although many people see watermelon as a mere juicy snack, this rounded burst of flavor boasts excellent nutritious value. The watermelon is a gold mine of health benefits. They have excellent levels of vitamins A, C and B6 and also contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that has been studied by researchers to reduce the risk of heart disease and several cancers. It can even help protect your skin from UV rays. The sweet melons also contain citrulline, an amino acid that helps to maintain blood flow within your heart and cardiovascular function. Have you ever wondered why watermelons are so heavy? They are made up of 92% water and can help get your body the fluids it needs.

Tasty Watermelon Treats • Cut watermelon and other fresh fruit into cubes and stack them on a skewer with marshmallows to make delicious watermelon kabobs! • Use a melon baller to create tiny watermelon spheres. Dip the spheres into heated melting chocolate, and freeze for 30–45 minutes to enjoy this unique dessert. • Freeze fresh watermelon cubes or balls and use them as ice cubes for your water. • Create a refreshing side dish for a day at the pool or park with watermelon cubes, cheese cubes and crackers. Try stacking the watermelon, cheese and crackers together to make a mini sandwich. • Place cubes of watermelon into cupcake liners and add heavy cream. Top with blueberries and sprinkles to add flavor to your watermelon "cupcake"!

August 3rd is National Watermelon Day! For more information about watermelon and fun recipes for all occasions, check out Watermelon.org.

Growing and Harvesting Watermelons thrive in warm climates, so in places like Florida they are able to grow all year round. They are planted in rows and raised in large beds. Honeybees must pollinate every yellow blossom in order for watermelon to fruit. Within 60 days, the vine will produce its very first watermelon. A watermelon is ripe and ready to enjoy when it has a symmetrical body shape, a yellow underbelly, and the stem has curled and turned brown.

Did You Know Watermelon is a pretty popular treat. In the United States, watermelons are the most-consumed melon! A watermelon that is around 15–20 pounds can bring a lot to the table. It can produce 90 6-ounce wedges that are about 3/4 inches thick, 11 cups of cubes and 6 cups of juice. Watermelon was ranked number one on the list of budgetfriendly fruits, according to a study by The Perishables Group in 2010. It is only about 14 cents per serving! There have been ongoing debates about whether watermelon is a fruit or vegetable. Watermelon is considered a fruit botanically. However, since watermelon is grown like a vegetable crop and uses vegetable production systems, it can also be seen as a vegetable. The choice is yours!

health | get healthy Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, postural kyphosis influenced by technology has become known as “gamer’s neck.” According to the Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute, staring at a mobile or gaming device affects our posture in three ways: “Looking down places the head and neck in a position that requires continual muscle activity to maintain. Forward head posture places abnormal forces on the structure in the neck. Remaining in the forward head position for long periods causes repetitive stress on joints, muscles, and nerve structures in the head and neck.” In addition to pain in back muscles, kyphosis can complicate physical functions over time, cause acid reflux by compression of the spine, and could initiate body image and self-esteem problems due to a rounded back, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Gamer’s Neck:

How to Help Your Teens’ Posture BY TRACY WRIGHT

We’ve all heard that infamous phrase from our parents or grandparents: “Sit up straight!” or “Don’t slouch!” As annoying as it may have been, they were simply making sure we practiced good posture, something that benefits people both physically and aesthetically for years to come. Unfortunately, modern technology like smart phones and video games has negatively impacted our adolescent’s posture. More tweens, teens and young adults are seen hunching over their smart devices or video game console, sometimes for hours at a time. Known technically as kyphosis, it is “the rounding of the spine due to poor posture,” said Dr. David Skaggs, director of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children’s Hospital. “Postural kyphosis happens when a person’s regular hunching forward stretches muscles and ligaments, pulling the spine out of its normal curvature and into an unnaturally rounded shape.” *Always consult your doctor with any questions about your child’s posture.

20

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

If it turns out your child is suffering from typical postural kyphosis, the Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute recommends actively adjusting one’s posture to help relieve gamer’s neck: “Straighten up, keep your phone or device at eye level to relieve straining, and squeeze your shoulder blades together to strengthen back muscles.” Setting screen time limits for teens is a good rule of thumb for many reasons, least of which is to help improve their posture and give their muscles a break. Limit their digital play time to two hours or less a day, as noted by Direct Orthopedic Care. For children who enjoy gaming, buy proper ergonomic chairs and keyboards. According to Direct Orthopedic Care, “This will eliminate slouching and decrease pressure on their spine and wrists which can lead to poor posture and nerve impingement.” Finally, encourage break time while playing to relieve sore muscles. If you believe your child has a more serious condition, the Mayo Clinic suggests getting evaluated with a physical examination. Doctors then may elect to order x-rays, MRI or neurological tests to ensure their poor posture is not something that may require more invasive interventions.

This lauric acid also helps with absorption into the skin to create a soothing mask for the scalp.

Add Scalp Care to Your Skin Care Routine BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1

Skin is the largest organ of the body and subject to many causes of irritation. Just as we spend time, money and effort on taking care of our skin, we also need to take care of our scalp!

Is it dandruff or dry skin?

Sometimes the scalp produces itchy, dry flakes that may peel off into the hair. While dandruff and dry skin can present in a similar fashion, the causes for each are quite different. According to the Cleveland Clinic, dandruff is caused by excess oil and typically produces large flakes. Dandruff is often caused by seborrheic dermatitis, which is a skin condition that can be caused by stress, a buildup of yeast, certain medications, hormonal changes, dry weather, harsh detergents or soaps and certain medical conditions such as HIV and Parkinson’s disease, according to the National Eczema Association. Seborrheic dermatitis is a very common form of eczema and often also seen on infants as cradle cap. On the other hand, dry scalp is caused by a lack of moisture. Those with dry scalp may experience dryness in other parts of the body due to the moisture loss. Dry scalp is often caused by contact dermatitis, where the skin is exposed to an irritant in a shampoo or hair care product. Cold,

22

dry weather can also cause dry scalp. Sometimes dry scalp can be caused by other conditions such as psoriasis, actinic keratosis or tinea capitis (also known as scalp ringworm).

What can I do to take care of my scalp?

If you are experiencing flaking but unsure of the cause, try some simple home remedies to see if it alleviates the problem. Switching to a gentle, moisturizing shampoo is a good first step. Washing hair less frequently may help with dryness issues caused by overwashing. Ensuring you are drinking plenty of water and managing stress will also contribute to a healthy, flake-free scalp. Apple cider vinegar has antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and when diluted with warm water, can be a beneficial treatment post-shampoo. Another common kitchen ingredient, organic coconut oil, has been shown to help with itchy scalps. It contains a saturated fat called lauric acid that contains antimicrobial properties.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

Essential oils such as peppermint and tea tree oils may also be a successful home remedy, according to Healthline. Peppermint oil mixed with some olive oil and used as a pre-shampoo treatment may help reduce dandruff and skin irritation. Tea tree oil has antifungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Tea tree oil can be particularly potent so it is also recommended to mix with olive oil and massage into the scalp before washing.

Scalp massage? Yes, please!

We’ve all enjoyed the luxury of a scalp massage when the hairdresser washes our hair. Those few moments of a head rub feel so good! Guess what - you can do it too as part of your scalp care routine! Whether you use your fingers, a scalp massager or a brush, there are many benefits to that head rub (and you don’t have to wait for your next haircut!). A research study published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science showed a decrease in cortisol and norepinephrine (stress hormones) as well as a reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure with a scalp massage intervention. That’s right — it can help reduce stress! Healthline states that routine scalp massages can also help prevent dandruff. One other benefit of scalp massages is stimulating hair growth if done repeatedly over time. (Plus, it just feels good!) Incorporating scalp care into your regular skin and hair care routine will help create a healthy head. If you suffer from a dry, itchy or irritated scalp, simple remedies may alleviate the problem. However, if your symptoms are severe, last longer than a few weeks, are swollen or painful to touch or causing severe itchiness, call your primary doctor or dermatologist to rule out other potential causes.

PURE AESTHETICS

health | get healthy Johns Hopkins Medicine says that children are more likely to stutter if they have: • A family history of stuttering • Stuttered for 6 months or longer • Other speech or language disorders • Strong emotions about stuttering or family members with fears or concerns Although most young children outgrow developmental stuttering, sometimes, “stuttering may be a chronic condition that persists into adulthood. This type of stuttering can have an impact on selfesteem and interactions with other people,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

When should parents seek the advice of a professional?

The Mayo Clinic advises parents to seek the advice of their pediatrician or a speech language pathologist if stuttering “lasts more than six months, occurs with other speech or language problems, becomes more frequent or continues as the child grows older, occurs with muscle tightening or visibly struggling to speak, affects the ability to effectively communicate at school, at work or in social interactions, or causes anxiety or emotional problems, such as fear or avoidance of situations where speaking is required.”

Stuttering in Children: How to Help BY TRACY WRIGHT

While it may seem frustrating for parents, children often deal with difficulties when learning to speak. Stuttering often occurs most often in children between the ages of 2 and 6 as they are developing their language skills, reports the National Institutes of Health. Approximately 5-10% of all children will stutter for some period in their life, lasting from a few weeks to several years. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, stuttering is when the typical flow of speech is disrupted and the child “repeats or prolongs sound, syllables and words, blocked speech, being out of breath or nervous while talking, fast eye blinking or trembling or shaking lips when speaking, increased stuttering when tired, excited, or under stress, or being afraid to talk.” Developmental stuttering is the most common type of stuttering in children. “Some amount of stuttering is common in children ages 2 to 5 years old while developing early speech and language skills, and will typically resolve itself without intervention,” said Amy Tomlinson, CCC, SLP, speech language pathologist

24

and founding director of Fundamentals Therapy. “Developmental stuttering may persist throughout childhood and into adulthood when speech and language skills are not developed adequately to form and communicate thoughts fluently.”

Why do some children stutter?

There is no one single reason. Rather, there may be a variety of factors that cause the condition. Different influences may include speech and language processing, motor control, physiology, genetics and personality, said Lauren Meffen MA CCC/ SLP, CLT, speech language pathologist and owner of local Wildflower Therapy.

“A speech language pathologist will look at all aspects of child communication and development including the expressive/ receptive skills and phonological processes to help determine the best plan of treatment,” Meffen said. “A therapist will counsel and guide the family as well as the child on strategies. Treatment of stuttering not only includes the child but also the caregivers and family members to aid in minimizing any unintentional interruptions and decrease the anxiety associated with speaking.” As parents, the best way to help children who may stutter is encouraging a relaxed environment for speech, praising positive speech patterns and not getting frustrated if your child begins to stutter, and allowing them to speak without interrupting or trying to finish their thought, according to Johns Hopkins. Talk openly with your child if they want to discuss their speech disorder and work with your child’s educators to create a supportive environment.

*If you have any questions about stuttering, please speak with your pediatrician.

Bye Bye Dark Circles, Hello Bright Eyes! BY NICOLE IRVING

We all know what the first day of school means for us parents! Alarm clocks set early, late nights getting things ready and the beginning of many nights with little sleep. There may not be enough coffee to get us through some weeks, and our eyes definitely start to tell the very real story of how tired we are. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Dark circles under the eyes are usually caused by being tired…what appear to be dark circles under your eyes may merely be shadows cast by puffy eyelids or hollows under your eyes that develop as a normal part of aging.” Have no fear, we have your back! Cold compresses and extra sleep of course can help with those dark circles and fine lines, but, if you need a little extra help, we have rounded up some of our favorite eye creams, hydration boosters and night creams, ready to help you get refreshed in no time!

With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America's most common cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Gainesville Dermatology experts recommend the daily use of a broadspectrum sunscreen, as this protects the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. With an SPF minimum rating of 35, you can protect against sunburn which reduces the risk of skin cancer, helps prevent photodamage and photoaging, or premature skin aging.

Float Like a Butterfly, Spell Like a Bee BY LYLE TOPPING PHOTOS BY JIMMY HO PHOTOGRAPHY

In the late afternoon of March 31, 14-year-old Westin Martin took the stage in the 2023 First Coast Spelling Bee at LaVilla Schools of the Arts. According to local outlets, Martin faced off against 14 others who spelled over 125 words and competed in 15 rounds ahead of being crowned this year’s champion. Martin, an eighth grader from Abraham Lincoln Middle School, correctly spelled ‘desertification’ in round 15 to take the title. With this win under his belt, he headed out to the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee (SNSB) in National Harbor, Maryland. Ironically, Martin, who is now a rising 9th grader, does not even like spelling. When asked if he had a favorite word, he replied, “No, not really. Some words are more fun to spell than others, though. For instance, I love the word 'ca'canny.' It's not that hard of a word to spell, but I find its definition funny. It means to walk slowly to prolong work." “His passion was geography and history and, later, science. He has competed in multiple geography competitions, but this was his first national competition outside of those subject areas,” said Tammy, Westin’s mom. “He does love to read, though, which is probably what helped him win the school spelling bee.”

Westin received an award for taking the tile at the 2023 First Coast Spelling Bee.

About the National Spelling Bee The spelling bee has nothing to do with insects. According to the Scripps National Spelling Bee website, “The word bee, as used in spelling 'bee,' is one of those language puzzles that has never been satisfactorily accounted for. A fairly old and widely-used word, it refers to a community social gathering at which friends and neighbors join together in a single activity (sewing, quilting, barn raising, etc.) usually to help one person or family.” Scripps National Spelling quotes, “The National Spelling Bee began in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee. Little did they know that more than 90 years later their literacy effort would reach 11 million students each year.” Every student has the same road to victory starting in school cafeterias or gymnasiums all the way to the national stage.

36

Spelling Bee before misspelling ‘molasse.’ With this word, he concluded his competition in a tie for 23rd place. Although cut short, his run remains impressive and his parents are incredibly proud. “His father and I couldn’t be any prouder. To see his hard work pay off in such a big way, it’s very rewarding to see as a parent,” Tammy said. “Westin is an incredible kid with a knack for several subjects. And while we know this was his last year to compete at Scripps, we look forward to seeing what he’ll do next.” If your child has spelling fever and aspires of one day making it to the SNSB, Martin encourages them to try their best and never give up. “You’ll never win if you don’t try,” he said. “Don’t let the competition intimidate you and remember, your best is always good enough.”

But how does one who isn’t really into spelling make it into one of the most prestigious spelling competitions? In the weeks after the spelling competition in Jacksonville and leading up to the SNSB, Martin formulated two main ways of studying. “I can use rote memorization, which is great for learning lists of words, but not so great when it comes spelling words randomly picked from the dictionary, like they give you at Nationals,” said Martin. This process of studying included flashcards and learning the definition. Martin also learned the root words to have a more comprehensive knowledge of the words he was spelling. “A root word is a subdivision of a word, which, when memorized, can more easily be used to understand the definition of a given word,” he said. On May 31, Westin made it all the way to round six at the at the 2023 Scripps National

Pay to Stay:

Can Rent Make for Financially Savvy Kids? BY HANNAH SHELTON

Residing over an empty nest can feel bittersweet for many parents. Although much of parenthood is spent equipping children with the resources and skills to be independent adults, watching them fly the coop is seldom a dry-eyed experience. But what to do about money when kids spread their wings only to return to the nest?

If your children move back home, deciding on whether you should charge rent is no fickle finance matter. Every family dynamic is unique, and it’s important to have an open dialogue before any boundaries or payments are set. Consider why you want your children to pay rent. Is it to support household expenses? To teach them how to budget? As noted by TIME, be clear about what’s involved, what’s included and what’s not. Assess how your child’s financial situation aligns with yours, and how much would be paid when and for what. With utilities, groceries and discretionary expenses galore, there are (perhaps unfortunately) plenty of ways kids can pay to stay beyond rent. Rather than merely requiring children to slip a monthly check to their parental landlords, have a conversation about expectations and support. Do they need a job? What happens if they’re late or unable to pay? Be sure to also discuss future goals and map a path to financial freedom. The hesitancy surrounding these conversations is common, but so are the contributing kids! “Increasingly in the U.S., adult children are living with their parents,” according to a HuffPost article. “Twenty-five percent of adults ages 25-34 lived in multigenerational households in 2021, compared to only 9% in 2010…20% of the income in these multigenerational households came from young adults.” As more kids flock back to the nest, consider these benefits of encouraging them to pay rent: • Learn financial responsibility: Recurring expenses can prompt your children to budget wisely and save effectively. • Regain independence: Encouraging your kids to become more self-sufficient as they financially support themselves, and perhaps boost their pride and confidence. • Prepare for the real world: Guiding children through the realities of living on their own, and the monetary obligations that follow, is likely to best prepare them for when they eventually plan to move out. If your dynamic entails financial hardships or strained relationships, consider how your child can support through tasks like cleaning and cooking. Looking to turn rent into riches? Create a savings opportunity by reimbursing your child. “Parents who don’t feel the need to use the money collected from a child can quietly create a ‘parental 401(k),’” as recommended by U.S. World News & Report. “This will force a child to save money without him or her knowing it. When it comes time for the child to move out, parents can present the nest egg in a form of a check, or deposit it into a bank account.” There’s no one-rent-fits-all approach, so prioritize having open discussions and a fair balance that supports everyone’s life at home.

For this project you’ll need:

a. A printed paper rocket ship,

approximately 3 inches long. Visit gigglemagazine.com to download the template. You can decide to print it in full color or black and Scan to download white to template: be colored. Standard copy paper weight works great for this craft.

b. Plastic water droppers (can be found on Amazon or at Hobby Lobby and Michael’s)

c

d

Tip Take your rocket races to new spaces! Once you are done racing these inside, test how far they fly when racing down from a playset tower or across the yard. Test them down a staircase or over the top of a fort.

We’d love to see your book activities! Share with us and tag creative_household or post #creativehouseholdfl to show off your fun!

c. Plastic or paper straws d. Scotch Tape

Instructions For this project you’ll need:

Print out your rocket. Color your rocket and make it unique. Use markets, paint, stickers, glitter, etc. Once colored, cut out the rocket.

Tape the cut water dropper to the backside of the rocket, the open end will be at the base of the rocket. For the race, insert a straw into the open end of the dropper, hold tight to the straw and blow! The rockets will shoot off the straw!

Grab your water droppers and cut off the narrow end of the dropper so a shortened, larger squeeze part is left. You’ll want the larger squeeze end to be approximately the length of the rocket. This will leave an opening at one end of your dropper.

Battle of the Germs:

Backpacks, Lunchboxes and Water Bottles

overnight, keeping a lunchbox safe from the threat of harmful germs and bacteria starts at home!

Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands before packing a lunch. Additionally, avoid using your cellphone and other electronic devices while “Simply setting a preparing a lunch as these backpack down on a contain an alarming amount of restroom floor exposes germs on them such as staph it to tens of thousands and Pseudomonas, according to of individual bacteria a study published in the journal and viruses.” Germs. The final step to at-home prevention of lunchbox germs is ensuring there are two cold sources such as a gel pack and a frozen water bottle to prevent food from warming and spoiling.

BY JESSICA FRANKLIN

Water Bottles

Every person with a school-aged child knows back to school season is often shortly followed by the start of a new cold and flu season. Children are once again going to be in close quarters with 20–30 of their peers and all the germs they bring with them! But have you considered they might just be carrying those germs to and from home with them compliments of their backpacks, lunchboxes and water bottles? Backpacks

Consider a day in the life of a backpack. Heading out the door, the backpack almost immediately gets set on the ground waiting for the bus in the morning. Once on the bus, it likely gets set down again, but on a floor that is routinely subjected to dirty shoes and all sorts of spills. Upon arrival at school, your child might make a stop in the restroom and set his backpack on the floor near the toilet, right in the splash zone! Once in the classroom, the backpack finally gets some relief and is hung, but right next to it is

50

another backpack that has had a similar morning, and possibly came from a home already battling a virus! Simply setting a backpack down on a restroom floor exposes it to tens of thousands of individual bacteria and viruses, predominantly Staphylococcus bacteria and the herpes virus, according to a study published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology. I will admit it does not occur to me to wash a bag or backpack unless I see a visible stain on it. However, it should be emptied out and added to your laundry on a weekly basis to rid it of the countless germs it picks up through the course of a week. But what about the bag inside the bag? Your child’s lunchbox is another ideal place for germs to thrive!

Lunchboxes

If your child brings lunch from home, consider the germs that can breed in his lunchbox, like staph and E. coli. While one of the most important things to remember is thoroughly cleaning the lunchbox at the end of the day using warm water and soap or vinegar and leaving it open to air-dry

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

Water bottles are another battleground for germs, especially if the user is battling a contagious illness such as influenza or the common cold, but the good news is that they are the easiest with which to deal. If the water bottle is a reusable bottle, it should be washed daily by completely taking apart the various pieces and cleaning each one individually. If your bottle says it is BPA free, it generally is top rack safe in the dishwasher. However, if your water bottle does not specifically say BPA free, you will want to hand wash your bottle as constant exposure to high heat in a dishwasher could leech harmful chemicals out of the bottle and into your child’s water. While commercial products come with a reasonable degree of certainty as to their effectiveness, if you prefer to stay away from chemicals you can wash your bottle in a solution of white vinegar and water! You can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oils; there are many that have antibacterial properties such as cinnamon, thyme, oregano and tea tree. Hopefully by following the above guidelines, you can help stop cold and flu germs in their tracks and keep your house a healthy one this season!

Tip Be sure to refer to the manufacturer guidelines for specific washing instructions!

Step Up for Students and the Family: Empowerment Scholarship BY CRYSTAL LADWIG, PH.D.

Many families are aware of Step Up for Students, Florida’s statewide scholarship hub for children in grades K-12. In recent years, and most recently with the passage of HB1 expanding Florida’s school voucher system, Step Up for Students has grown significantly. This may leave some parents of children with special needs wondering how it affects them.

The Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities (FES-UA) FES-UA is a scholarship program that acts like an education savings account funded by the state. FES-UA is for children ages 3 to 22 who have special needs, such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Sensory Impairments, Intellectual Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairments and more. Acknowledging the diverse nature of special needs, FES-UA ensures that families have the necessary support to provide the best education for their children. Participating families can direct funds toward educational expenses, including tuition and fees for private schools, homeschooling, therapies, tutoring and more. Families can utilize the scholarship for a combination of programs and approved expenses. This includes access to therapists and specialists who can aid in the child's development and provide necessary interventions. Whether it be speech therapy, occupational therapy, or other therapeutic interventions, families can direct funds to these vital services. FES-UA also enables families to select curriculum materials that are specifically designed to address their children’s unique learning styles and needs. This personalized approach to education can greatly enhance the child's academic progress and overall well-being. A distinctive feature of FES-UA is the convenience it offers through

52

MyScholarShop. Families can purchase services and products directly through MyScholarShop without having to pay upfront and apply for reimbursement. This streamlined process eliminates the financial burden of upfront payments, making it easier for families to promptly access the resources they need. MyScholarShop provides a curated selection of preapproved services and products, helping to ensure that families can find suitable options for their child's education. Families also have the flexibility to choose providers or products outside of MyScholarShop for preapproved purchases. In such cases, families pay upfront for services or products and then submit a reimbursement claim. This allows families to explore additional resources beyond the preapproved offerings, ensuring that they have access to a wide range of educational options for their child. Another noteworthy aspect of FES-UA is its provision for private school tuition. Families who believe that a specialized private institution will best cater to their child's

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

educational needs can utilize the scholarship to cover tuition expenses. This option allows families to choose a school that aligns with their child's needs, providing an inclusive, supportive learning environment.

How to Apply for the FES-UA To apply for the FES-UA scholarship, families must go through Step Up for Students and provide the necessary documentation. This typically includes proof of the child's age, diagnosis, and residency. Step Up for Students provides a comprehensive checklist of documents that families may need to submit, ensuring a smooth application process. To learn more, visit www.stepupforstudents. org/scholarships/unique-abilities/ for detailed information about the FES-UA program, eligibility Scan for more criteria, application scholarship information: procedures, and the various approved expenses that families can consider.

Can I Homeschool for High School? BY CRYSTAL LADWIG, PH.D.

Homeschooling is an increasingly popular alternative to traditional education, offering parents the flexibility and control over their child's learning experience. While homeschooling at the high school level may seem like a daunting task, it can be enriching and rewarding experience for parents and students.

Independent Learning Independent learning is crucial during high school homeschooling. Encouraging autonomy and self-motivation helps teens develop important skills they will need in college, career, and beyond. Promote independent learning with structured curricula and clear expectations.

What About Credits? As the homeschooling parent, you decide when your child has earned their diploma. However, if your child desires to go on to college, a formal transcript with credits earned is necessary. While you don’t have to teach specific state standards, review them to make sure that your child is prepared for college. This will also help you create a transcript.

What About Transcripts? Creating transcripts is an essential aspect of homeschooling high school students. Transcripts document a student's academic achievements and are used for college and job applications. Design transcripts by including course names, grades, and credits earned for each subject.

What About Life After High School? Whether a student plans to attend college, pursue a trade, or enter the workforce directly, encourage them to research the requirements and prerequisites for their desired path. If your child plans to enter the workforce after high school, a homeschool diploma is as valid as any

54

other diploma. Help your child explore potential careers through by job shadowing experiences, internships or community service opportunities. If your child plans to attend college, together with your child, call the admissions offices of colleges under consideration and talk to them about specific requirements or documents they require for homeschool graduates. Doing this early ensures that you have all the necessary materials when it’s time to apply. Some colleges are now testoptional, but many still require applicants to take the SAT, the ACT, or the CLT.

“I Can’t Teach That!” As students begin high school, some parents become intimidated about particular subjects. Unfortunately, this leads some families to abandon homeschooling. However, many resources and tools are available to support your homeschool. Tailor curricula to align with their child's interests, strengths and goals. For

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

instance, if your child is passionate about computer science, provide them with programming courses online or in the community or mentorship opportunities with professionals in the field. Incorporate real-world applications of knowledge, such as hands-on experiments or field trips to make learning more engaging. Take advantage of various online resources. Virtual libraries and online courses supplement traditional textbooks and provide students with a dynamic and interactive learning experience.

Final Thoughts Homeschooling high school students can be a fulfilling and effective educational option for everyone. Remember, homeschooling allows for flexibility and personalization, so embrace the opportunity to tailor the learning experience to your child's individual needs and interests. With dedication and commitment, homeschooling can set the stage for a successful and fulfilling future.

Get in Command! BY NICOLE IRVING

Once the first day of school comes, it is full-steam ahead with multiple schedules and everyone going in different directions. Merging family calendars and organizing daily necessities is a must and having a specific place in the house that everyone knows is the command center can keep everyone on track. Make sure the family always has supplies on hand when needed.

WHERE TO PUT YOUR COMMAND CENTER? The best place to put your family’s command center is in a location that gets high traffic and is visited quite often. The kitchen is the heart of the home and can be a great place, if space allows. Other great locations can be a mud room, laundry room or home office. The most important thing is that it is visible to the whole family every day.

She spent 15 years teaching at Eastside High School, and she currently teaches 12th grade at PK Yonge Developmental Research School with the University of Florida. She attended the University of Florida for both her BA in English and her M.Ed. in English Education. She has been married for 16 years and is a mom to one sassy 11 year old and two trouble-making rescue dogs. Why were you inspired to teach?

WHERE DO YOU TEACH? PK Yonge Developmental Research School at the University of Florida WHAT GRADE DO YOU TEACH? 12th grade HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TEACHER? This year will be my 17th year teaching. I taught my first 15 years at Eastside High School and moved to teach at PK Yonge last year. WHAT SUBJECT DO YOU TEACH? English Language Arts; AP Literature and Composition

Do you know a teacher who goes above and beyond for his students? An administrator who is truly devoted to making her school a better place? Giggle Magazine wants to know! Visit gigglemagazine.com to submit your favorite educator for a chance for him or her to be featured in one of our upcoming issues.

I was an English major for my undergraduate degree, and I decided to get my M.Ed. to share my love of reading and writing with students. I studied poetry in college and contemplated getting an MFA after undergrad, but then as applications were due, I met a teacher in the College of Education at the University of Florida, and we spoke about my love of reading poetry and writing my own poetry. She asked me how I would feel sharing that poetry with students, and I knew I would love to share that passion with others. I went home and applied to the M.Ed. program that same day.

What is your favorite part of the school day? The times in class when I can see a student grasp a concept and they feel confident in their ability. That sense when they feel a personal sense of understanding. There was a moment last year when one student looked at me and said, “Ms. Franklin, thank you for teaching this story to us. I feel like I learned so much about writing, imagery, and how to truly read a text.” Her words will stay with me forever. And while this does not always happen daily, I also enjoy the small moments of connection with students when we discuss our lives from the things they may be doing in band, sports, their jobs, etc.

Do you have a favorite assignment/ project that you typically assign your students? One of my favorite novels to read and teach is Zora Neale Hurtson's 'Their Eyes Were Watching God,' and at the end of the unit as a final project the students create a map where they trace the journey of

the protagonist, Janie, and her growth and travels in the story. I am often impressed by their creativity and insight that they demonstrate with this task. This is a story about finding yourself, and watching students create that special connection between the text and themselves is a special moment for me.

How do you wind down from a long day of teaching? I like to wind down by spending time with my daughter and husband. We love to play tennis together, to go on hikes with our dogs, or to stay in and play a game as a family. This summer we got a badminton set and have spent many hours playing together in our backyard. If we are inside playing games, our current favorite is 'Exploding Kittens.'

What hobbies do you enjoy? I am also the tennis coach for the girl’s tennis team at PK and I spend a lot of time playing on my own with my dad and my daughter. My dad, a former tennis pro, has been giving me lessons this summer and the time spent with him is even more important. I am also passionate about animal rescue. I have two rescue dogs, Tito and Luna, and I love to take them for walks and to spend time with my family. About six years ago, I started volunteering for a local dog rescue, BARC (Boxer Aid and Rescue Coalition), and helping animals has become a large part of my life.

Share a funny teaching moment. In November 2022, I got to experience my first PK field trip. The 12th grade teacher team took the senior class to a local arcade. At first, I hung back and watched the kids play. Most of my students this year were

17 or 18, but even though some may consider them grown up, they were having fun playing Skeet ball, air hockey, and all the video games you could imagine. After about 30 minutes or so, the kids invited me to play too, and I enjoyed joining in to play with them. I learned how to play the guitar for Guitar Hero, and I won a round or two of air hockey. Most of all, I laughed so much with the children. It was a relaxing break from reading 'The Great Gatsby' and practicing our analysis skills for the AP exam, and it strengthened our bonds and class community as well.

If you were a superhero, who would you be? I think Captain Marvel is an interesting character, and I feel I can relate to her. She wanted to be an astronaut and worked at NASA, and I love the idea of exploration and learning. The main reason I thought of her has to do with her leadership role. Last school year, I became a tennis coach for the first time in my career, and the challenge of playing multiple roles (teacher, coach, mother) felt like the way that Captain Marvel feels early in her superhero career too.

What is your favorite book? This is too difficult to answer with a single text. For me, it depends on the genre and the year. For teaching, I love to teach Hurston’s 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' and Shakespeare’s 'Hamlet.' My favorite book that I read last year was probably 'Chemistry Lessons' by Bonnie Garmus, a book about a woman scientist who finds a way to pursue her dreams in a difficult time.

What are you looking forward to on the first day of school? Meeting my new students and creating a class community. I love getting to know my students and building a space where each student feels challenged, while feeling supported and loved. I want to create a haven where each student feels like they can take risks in writing. I also want to expose them to all kinds of literature to inspire their own writing.

If you could share 3 pieces of advice to parents about how to make the first week of school the best it can be, what would you tell them? My advice comes from the perspective of both a teacher and a mother: Wake up early; this avoids the rushed feeling and the arguments that can come with running late. I would also suggest that you start to establish your routine the week before school starts, so you all have time to adjust to the school schedule.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

Take time to relax and enjoy time together at the end of the day; do something fun like take a walk, play a game, cook dinner as a family. Gather your school supplies early the weekend before, so your child can be calm and prepared in class and you can have one less thing to do in the evening after school/work. Most school supply lists are posted online in advance, and if you are unsure, you can always reach out to the school to ask for one.

How the

No. 2 Became

No. 1:

The Story Behind The Pencil BY COLE PURVIS

From the distinct taps of its graphite tip to the signature glisten of its polished yellow body, the No. 2 pencil has etched its way into writing history. For generations, this classroom staple has been our go-to utensil for essays, notes, test bubbles, and everything in between. But have you ever considered the uniqueness of the standard pencil? Why No. 2 and why all the yellow? The history behind this iconic writing utensil may surprise you.

Knowing the numbers

The most common pencils in the world are denoted by a No. 2 and the letters HB engraved on their side, but they are just one of many different types. Pencils are assigned numbers–one through nine–and letters–H, B or HB–to indicate the varying degrees of hardness and darkness of their graphite cores. The higher the number, the harder the graphite and the lighter the mark it makes. Lower-numbered pencils, conversely, contain softer graphite cores and produce darker marks. The letter H designates the hardest, lightest pencils, ranging from H – 9H, while the letter B designates the softest, darkest pencils, ranging from B – 9B. Pencils labeled with the letters “HB” are a neutral medium between these two.

Royal beginnings

The gold standard

As it turns out, the graphite held within the core of the classic “HB” No. 2 pencil strikes a perfect balance between hardness and darkness. Neither too light nor too dark, the No. 2 pencil has the versatility to service the needs of students and professionals alike. It glides smoothly across paper, allowing for effortless strokes without excessive smudging or fading. Its medium darkness also ensures optimal readability, making it an ideal choice for forms, signatures and standardized tests.

The distinct yellow hue of today’s pencils were once considered a sign of luxury. Over 120 years ago, Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth, a Hungarian stationery company, sought to differentiate its pencils as the most exclusive and premium in a fiercely competitive market. What they came up with was a fancy yellow paint job, indicative of Chinese royalty and honor, as Chinese graphite was globally renowned for its high quality. In fact, it is believed that the first of these pencils were actually dipped in real gold!

Inside most pencils, you'll find a core of graphite. The hardness of the graphite used will determine its darkness when applied to a piece of paper.

The distinctive yellow hue quickly became a hit, captivating consumers with its bright and cheerful appearance. As other pencil manufacturers took note of the trend, they too began producing yellow pencils, creating a visual association between the color and the pencil itself. Over time, the yellow pencil became synonymous with quality and reliability, solidifying its place as the pencil of choice in classrooms and offices around the world.

History in the palm of your hand

So, the next time you pick up a No. 2 pencil, take a moment to appreciate its storied past. From its perfect graphite composition to its shiny yellow exterior, this humble writing instrument has transcended time and remains an essential part of our daily lives. As we continue to navigate the digital age, the No. 2 pencil serves as a reminder of the power of a simple yet effective tool.

{PREGNANCY}

From Strips to Screens:

Understanding Different Pregnancy Tests BY HANNAH SHELTON

Impatience is a virtue, especially when it comes to pregnancy tests. Regardless if you’re planning a family or not, accuracy is everything and it’s important to understand the different kinds of tests so you can make an informed decision on what best fits your needs.

Before the sticks, though, comes the science. As with most occurrences during pregnancy, it goes back to the body’s secret sauce: hormones. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “pregnancy tests look for a special hormone — human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) — that only develops in a person’s body during pregnancy. These tests can use either your pee or blood to look for hCG.” When hCG is present, it binds to the tests’ antibodies that change color and, voilà, a line (or two) appears. The hormone typically starts to produce 6-10 days after conception, making the body and the test typically very sensitive to the presence of hCG levels. With that, as noted by the Cleveland Clinic, “most at-home pregnancy tests are about 99% effective when used correctly.”

For the most accurate results at home, VeryWell Family recommends: • Using the first pee of the morning when hCG levels are most concentrated and easily detected • Delaying testing until the first day of a missed period • Following the instructions thoroughly and checking the expiration date • Waiting 10 minutes until checking the results • Retesting in 48 hours should there be a false-negative result If you’re eager to test before you’ve missed a menstrual cycle, the New York Times recommends the First Response Early Result Wand Test as the no. 1 best home pregnancy test. Not only is it affordable and easy to handle, but this test can also detect lower levels of the hCG hormone than most at-home kits. The Clearblue Digital Test reigns as the top digital test, which can be helpful in depicting a clear ‘pregnant’ or ‘not pregnant,’ as opposed to faint lines. For those interested in testing strips and cups, The Times recommends the MomMed Pregnancy Test, which can be especially useful for anyone who anticipates taking frequent tests. With some time and bravery, people can also receive a blood pregnancy test as early as 11-14 days after ovulation. Although these tests take a few days to confirm the results, they are about 99% accurate and can detect even lower amounts of hCG than urine pregnancy test, according to Better Health. In addition to measuring how much hCG is present in the body, a quantitative blood test can also share an estimate of how far along a pregnancy has progressed. While it a blood test may be an extra step than an at-home test, it may be worth the extra information! Pregnancy tests are where science meet magic. Empower yourself with the knowledge of an accurate test, and be sure to connect with your healthcare professional at every step during the journey. Remember, it’s yours! Carefully read the instructions, thoughtfully consider your options, and may you get the result you’re hoping for next time you test.

Snuggle Buddy:

The Benefits of Cuddling Your Baby BY JENNIFER JENSEN

There is nothing quite like snuggling with your baby. From that oh-so-soft skin to that soothing baby smell, what is not to love about holding an infant? But beyond those superficial benefits, cuddling actually has many health advantages for both babies and caregivers.

“Cuddling helps to improve bonding between the caregiver and baby, and makes a baby feel safe, loved, comforted and protected,” said Dr. Kendall Steadmon. “Babies are enclosed tightly in the womb, and they want to feel this same way following delivery.” Cuddling achieves this enclosed feeling and helps provide the infant with a sense of security and comfort. Cuddling can, and should, start directly after birth. Dr. Steadmon suggests a caregiver spend an uninterrupted hour of cuddle time with an infant right after they are born. Infants who are cuddled often feel soothed and calmed, which leads to decreases in their stress response. “This means babies will cry less and have improved blood glucose control, better temperature regulation and have improved outcomes all around,” she said. The most beneficial type of cuddling involves skin-to-skin contact, which is when a caregiver lays the infant belly-down on their chest, both unobstructed with clothes so that their skin is touching. According to an article published in the Journal of Perinatal Education, oxytocin increases significantly during skin-to-skin contact, which promotes maternal/newborn attachment, reduces maternal and newborn stress, and helps the newborn transition to postnatal life. The close contact that both caregiver and infant experience during cuddling and skin-to-skin has numerous health benefits for the infant. Compared with newborns who did not have skin-to-skin care, newborns who experienced skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth showed enhanced cardio-respiratory stability, more stable blood glucose level, better body temperature regulation and more success in continued breastfeeding, according to an article published in the Journal of Perinatal Education. Caregivers can also benefit through increased skin-to-skin time. Cuddling baby decreases stress levels, which leads to improved mother-infant bonding and a lower risk of postpartum depression in the first month, according to Steadmon. “Skin-to-skin care is a win-win for everyone,” she said. Skin-to-skin contact is not just for mothers and babies. All parents and other family members who will be primary caregivers for the infant should do skin-to-skin as well. “I recommend all caregivers bring a button down or zip-up shirt so they can snuggle their baby against their chest,” Steadmon said. “This also gives mom a chance to catch up on some much-needed rest.” Whether the baby was just born or has been home for a few weeks, individuals with infants should be sure to add lots of cuddling and skin-to-skin time with the infant during their day-to-day lives to take advantage of all the natural health benefits from this form of contact.

c2c | toddler Toe walking may be a symptom of tight calf muscles or a tight Achilles tendon. When the muscle or tendon is contracted, it does not allow for full extension of the leg, prohibiting the heel from reaching the ground. If you notice that your child has tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon, talk to your pediatrician, even if your child is younger than two. Toe walking may also be a symptom of cerebral palsy. According to the Cleveland Clinic, cerebral palsy is “caused by an injury to the immature brain that causes a disorder of movement and posture.” Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability among U.S. children. Because this disorder affects muscle tone and the way children move, it can interfere with a normal gait pattern. Another possible underlying condition is muscular dystrophy, which is a broad category that describes over 30 genetic conditions that affect muscle function. Because muscles do not work in typical fashion and symptoms often worsen over time, an altered gait is common.

{2-3 YEARS}

Toddlers and Tip Toes BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1

Have you ever noticed a child walking on their tip toes, seemingly floating along instead of walking heel to toe? Toe walking is defined as “a pattern of walking in which a child walks on the balls of their feet, with no contact between the heels and the ground,” according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. This walking style is very common in young children while they are first learning to walk. As they develop their ambulation skills, most children will outgrow toe walking, particularly if the parents don’t draw a lot of attention to it.

According to Nemours Kids Health, most children outgrow this walking style by around the time they are two years old. If your child is still toe walking at their 2-year check-up, talk to your doctor about it. Some children continue walking this way for longer spans out of habit and muscle memory. While most of the time children move past this stage without intervention, there are some instances where the child may need the help of a professional.

76

What are the problems associated with toe walking?

Walking on the ball of the foot is less sturdy than walking in the standard heel to toe pattern. At the elevated height level, the individual is less stable, making falls and twisted ankles a greater risk. Prolonged toe walking may also cause shortened muscles and tendons, making it more difficult to eventually walk in a standard gait. For some children, there may also be a social stigma attached to toe walking.

What are the interventions?

Could it be a sign of something else?

When to call the doctor:

Toe walking is also more common in people with autism spectrum disorder. In fact, according to Cleveland Clinic, a large research study found that approximately 9% of children on the spectrum walked on their toes. Cleveland Clinic states that toe walkers with autism may have decreased muscle tone or it could be sensoryrelated, since children with autism are often more sensitive to sensory input. The Autism Research Institute states that the vestibular issues common in autism, and particularly visualvestibular problems could be the reason some children with autism are toe walkers.

Your child continues to walk on their toes after 2 years old.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

Depending on the root cause of the toe walking, your pediatrician may refer your child to physical therapy to help with stretching and building muscle mass. Some children may also wear leg braces for a period to help stretch the muscles and allow for a standard walking pattern, while other cases may require surgery. If the underlying cause is related to a vestibular problem, your child may need to wear prism lenses or participate in vestibular-sensory therapy to improve vestibular problems. A combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy and consultation with an orthotist may be possible.

c2c | early years Even with practice, there will still be those times when the apologies do not seem sincere. Your child may yell or flippantly say “sorry” because they know it is what you expect. Use this time as an opportunity to add a little more creativity to the apology. “Some parents use scripts to help teach children to make a sincere apology and help them connect it to their behavior,” said Chance. “Others require apology notes or letters so there is a little more action required by the child. This is helpful because it is more than a ‘quick sorry’ to get out of trouble.” Marcia Ise has two children, ages 4 and 6. When they hurt one another, she has her children hug and recite, “God gave you to me to love and protect.” Sometimes they do this without her even prompting. Tiffany Scott, mother of three, said her children will sometimes apologize without prompting as well. “The 2-year-old will hurt her sister by accident and immediately hug and say ‘I sowwy’ before I say anything,” she said. Helping your child develop qualities such as consideration, authenticity and empathy takes time. The best way to teach your children how to be kindhearted people is to model it.

Saying Sorry: Teaching Your Children to Make Sincere Apologies BY OLIVIA K. PITKETHLY, MA, LMHC

Kristina Chance, licensed mental health counselor and registered play therapist, explained that children from ages 5 to 9 are still very “black and white” in their thinking simply because their brains are still in the early stages of development. She advised parents to let their children know, even if they do not think they did anything wrong, that they still hurt someone or something. “Because of that hurt, there is something to ‘repair,’ whether it be a relationship, feelings or situation, and apologies help repair or make amends for the action,” said Chance. She added that the more practice children have apologizing, the more natural it becomes.

78

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

For example, if your child yells at a classmate on the playground, help them be aware of how their actions have affected others. Did the other child cry? Did your child get in trouble? Did other kids refuse to play with them? Use these teachable moments to help them look outward. And don’t forget to use your empathy skills with them. Remember, you are your child's most important teacher!

Read All About It! Chance recommends using books to foster children’s awareness of others in relation to self. “Stand In My Shoes” by Bob Sornson helps show empathy to children and the internal reward that comes from being aware of others.

“Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud illustrates how we impact others’ self-esteem and mood along with our own.

Admitting when you are wrong and asking for forgiveness is difficult for some adults. Imagine being a kid and trying to understand these concepts. Young children act and react impulsively, sometimes leading them to insult or hit someone else, and often they don’t even realize that they did anything wrong.

“Parents need to be aware how they are being empathetic with their children and others around their children,” said Chance. “Also, children need help connecting the dots. They are presentminded beings so we typically need to help them see how past events affected current or future events.”

c2c | kids bedtime resistance, difficulty falling asleep, anxiety around sleep and sleeping fewer hours.” Wagner advised that families should have a bedtime routine and turn off electronics an hour before bed.

“Sometimes children will manifest sleepiness with behavioral problems,” she said. If a child is not getting the right amount of sleep each night, it’s possible for behavioral and cognitive problems to emerge, which can influence the ability to learn in school. Wagner explained that behaviors such as aggressiveness, impulsiveness, and the inability to focus and stay on task could result from lack of sleep. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports that a multinational study found children who have regular bedtime routines show a decrease in sleep problems as well as reduced behavior problems throughout the day.

{4-6 YEARS}

Sweet Sleep:

"It's important that parents create a consistent sleep schedule, relaxing bedtime routine and soothing sleep environment to help their child achieve healthy sleep,” said Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler, who is board-certified in sleep medicine and pulmonary medicine.

BY ARIANA BRASMAN

There is growing evidence about developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease or obesity in children who don’t get enough sleep each night. We have learned that sleep is crucial to the full development of a child and can play a major role on her health now and later in life.

Helping Your Child Get Those Precious Z's

Sleep is one of the sweetest treasures of life, but few people, especially children, appreciate its true riches. The amount of rest a child receives each night is imperative because sleep works wonders on the overall growth of a child’s brain and body. According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep is essential due to its influences on the physical and mental development of a child. Mary Wagner, director of the Pediatric Sleep Program at the University of Florida, explained that sleep requirements vary according to age.

Nightmares can be a contributor to restless sleep. Stress or a change in a child’s life can bring on nightmares, as well as watching or listening to something scary before bedtime. Help your child to have sweet dreams by: Setting a regular bedtime and wake-up time

“Duration and timing of sleep changes over your pediatric lifetime,” Wagner said.

Making sure your child’s bed is comfortable and a peaceful place to relax her body and mind

On average, children ages 6-13 need 9-11 hours of sleep per night. Children in this age range start spending more of their time involved in school or sports, and they become more captivated by watching TV or browsing the Internet. As a result, these activities may lead to problems falling asleep at night.

Not Just a Game:

Helping Your Tween Conquer Video Game Addiction BY OLIVIA K. PITKETHLY, MA, LMHC

Pac-Man, Mario Bros., Tetris. Video games have changed since we were kids. Now there are firstperson games, multiplayer online role-playing games and multi-user domain games. Kids today can play online with people across the world or watch others playing the same game on YouTube. The growth of technology is astounding and therefore, so is the access. Unfortunately, some kids can find themselves increasingly addicted to video game culture. According to recent research, more than 8% of U.S. children are addicted to video games. “Internet Gaming Disorder” is now listed as a psychological condition. If your tween appears preoccupied with the game, is playing it more often, and cannot control or limit his game time, it is possible he might be addicted. Parents may also notice warning signs such as poor academic performance, depression and anxiety, and spending less time with friends and family in order to play the game. A study published in the journal Pediatrics likens video game addiction with other types of addiction. Authors studied more than 1,000 children in grades three through eight and found depression, anxiety, social phobia and lower school performance as results of pathological gaming. Depending on the type, gaming can also shrink or expand the hippocampus, the area of the brain associated with spatial navigation, stress regulation and memory.

Limit time spent per day

Parents can reduce their child’s risk of addiction by setting boundaries on game time. Karla Roberts, mother of two teenagers, said her 13-year-old son enjoys playing video games, but she notices a change in behavior when he plays for too long. "I know when he's playing too much when he's more moody, snippy and anxious," she said. "More than two hours per day is way too much. It's too stimulating. Getting him outside seems to be the best remedy." Roberts said she limits him to around an hour a day and gives him a five-minute warning before it is time to end his game. Now that he is getting older, he tends to regulate himself when he has had enough game time. Find a reasonable amount of time to allow your tween to play his game. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, doctors recommend children in this age group should have consistent limits on time spent using any type of media, including video games.

82

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

While a specific amount of time is not addressed, media should not take the place of adequate sleep, physical activity and other behaviors essential to health. An Oxford University study noted that children who play an hour or less per day tend to be more social and happy than those who do not play video games at all. When a child spends more than three hours per day on a game, it can lead to hyperactivity, poor attention span and poor social skills.

Help your child find a healthy balance

Provide your tween with other healthy outlets. A tween’s recreational activity should also include outside play time, such as exercise, bike riding or sports. In the case of bad weather, encourage your tween to read, do something creative or play a board game with other family members. Parents should also make sure the child has met his other responsibilities, such as homework and chores.

Do not multi-task

When your tween plays their video game, that is all they should be doing. In other words, do not allow them to eat their dinner in front of the TV or computer or play on their smartphone while trying to go to sleep. Doing so will distract their brain from mindful eating or getting a restful sleep.

Talk to your tween about cyberbullying

While your child might enjoy playing online with their friends, sometimes a cyberbully or, worse, a predator may find their way into the game. Teach your tween how to handle these situations. Let them know that people are not always who they appear to be and to never send personal information (real name, age, address, phone number) or pictures to anyone they do not know in real life.

The Secret to Scholarships: Finding Hidden Financial Perks to Go to College BY MEREDITH SHELDON

Going to college is a life milestone. But, an undergraduate education can come with a hefty price tag. Along with federal loans and grants, there are other ways your children can earn some extra dollars toward their education: scholarships. College expenses pile up not just from tuition but also from living expenses, parking, textbooks and more. The annual costs of attendance at in-state private and public universities can be costly. Per year, costs for public schools in Florida range from about $21,000 at the University of Florida to about $17,000 at Santa Fe, while per year costs at private universities range from about $88,000 at the University of Miami to about $42,716 at the University of Tampa. Jessica Velasco, a college counselor and former director of admissions for Northwest University, said there are many ways to seek out a scholarship that is the best fit for your teen. Velasco created her own blog to help prospective and current college students afford and receive higher education.

After navigating the web, use resources closest to you. Velasco said certain scholarship opportunities are only available at high schools. Your child should meet with her guidance counselor to evaluate and find scholarships that are unique to her interests and her school. If your child is in an honor society, a sports team, a volunteer organization or even a church or temple, there are scholarships within those. Your teen should reach out to her organization supervisors to get the scholarship scoop. National scholarships via school organizations and companies are great, but Velasco said they are super competitive. The best tip, she said, is to find scholarships with small applicant pools.

How to Apply

Once your teen has found the scholarships they are seeking, the last step is applying. It is important for students to really sell themselves in the essay portion. Your teen can do this by highlighting a personal story, scenario or interest that is unique to them. “If someone else could send in that same essay, you aren't gonna stand out,” said Velasco. “Find something you are passionate about and something you are really proud of.” Have your child apply to a handful of scholarships that pique their interest, but do not overdo it. Velasco said the important aspect to focus on is the quality of the application. These applications take time, so make sure your child sets aside time in their schedule to work on them. “Think about it like a part-time job and dedicate a little bit of time every week,” she said. While the scholarship process may feel overwhelming, it will help significantly when paying for college. “Every little bit counts,” said Velasco. “Don't give up looking. They are out there. You just need to spend the time and energy to actually look for them. “

How to Start

Before scholarship hunting, Velasco said it is important that you and your teen know the school to which she plans to apply. Most financial aid and scholarship help will come from the institution, so look at schools in your budget. This will enable you to gauge how much financial assistance your child may require prior to starting the scholarship process. “Sometimes a college might be a great fit, but it might not be a great financial fit,” said Velasco. Once your child has determined which schools she will apply to, the first step in searching for a scholarship is for your teen to get to know themself. They should assess her favorite sports, hobbies, interests and passions. Look for scholarships that cater to their specific interests to increase her chances of getting the prize.

Where to Look

Velasco said to start your search by having your student join websites such as Fast Web and Cappex. Create an account, take surveys and let the database narrow down the best scholarships for them. Your teen should also join the email Listserv for these websites to get email updates on new scholarships.
