Spring is around the corner and of course Gilbert Parks & Recreation is gearing up for another great season! With the upcoming special events, recreation programs, and the aquatics season about to begin, we have plenty in store to keep you and your family active in the community. Enjoy this great weather at our annual Outdoor Expo at the Riparian Preserve on February 24th 9am-2pm. You will have a chance to brush up on various outdoor activities or learn new skills, including fishing, camping, hunting, hiking and much more. This is an event for ALL ages! This premier event will draw exhibitors and attendees statewide. For the adventurous at heart, the KA-POW! Superhero Adventure Run is on March 24th from 8am-12pm. This costumed run is perfect for the whole family to participate in with fun and challenging obstacles at Freestone District Park. Following in April, the Gilbert Global Village Festival, a multi-cultural celebration for all ages, on April 14th from 9am-2pm at the Gilbert Civic Center North Campus. “Bike Around the World”. As part of Valley Bike month, The Town of Gilbert and Valley Metro are encouraging families to ride your bike to the festival. Plenty of bicycle parking will be available and those that participate will receive some great “Bike Around the World” prizes. Bring the family to the Water Tower Plaza to enjoy a free concert. All concerts begin at 6:30pm March 15 and 29 April 12 and 26 May 5, 24 and 31 Visit our website for more information on Gilbert special events. Adaptive Recreation & Events ADAPTIVE RECREATION OVERVIEW
The Gilbert Parks & Recreation Adaptive Recreation Program strives to provide a comfortable, inviting, educational, and social environment where participants can learn and interact with others. The goal is to provide the best opportunities for participants to enrich their lives. Please note: participants must be able to follow simple directions. Individuals needing extra supervision must bring their own provider.
AR Events ADAPTIVE GYMNASTICS
This class is available to individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Adaptive Gymnastics will allow your loved one to focus on their individual skills which will include a balance beam routine or a floor exercise routine. All gymnast will also master 2 of the 5 following skills: a stuck landing, a tuck, a somersault, a cartwheel or a round-off. This class is a level 1 gymnastics class and will provide an inclusive, encouraging and empowering environment for all athletes to compete, grow and challenge themselves. Can’t come every week? Join us for one day or all five. Each day we’ll be earning a different medal by doing fun shooting activities. Put all five medals together and they make a target. A $10.00 equipment fee will be collected by the instructor on the first day, however, if you sign up for and attend all five days it will be refunded. GOLF SPRING BREAK CAMP
This three day camp will cover as many aspects of the game as possible including all of the pre-shot fundamentals; grip, aim, stance, posture and basic swing. Chipping, pitching, putting and driver swing instruction will follow. After a week of well-rounded instruction students will know how to practice properly and be ready to tackle the golf course in the future. Get closer to nature at the Riparian Preserve’s school break camp. Parent/Tot Classes 0-6 Years Parent/Tot Classes are designed to encourage both parent and child participation through instructor led activities. With you by their side, children will experience skills in sharing, listening and following directions. Classes are recommended for the first time participants and those that aren’t quite ready to leave your side. This is a great opportunity to spend quality time with your child.

This class is an extension of the Babies in Motion class but with siblings in mind! Sportball utilizes developmentally appropriate techniques to enhance motor skills, social skills and sport strategy with caregivers by their side. All coaches are professionally trained and must pass a rigorous Sportball certification process. Sportball provides all equipment.
Sportball Me & My Dad programs help young children to refine their motor skills, such as balance and coordination, as well as develop their social skills such as confidence, following instructions, turn-taking and sharing. Children are introduced to fundamental concepts of gameplay and provided the basic skills required to play with confidence in a supportive, non-competitive environment. The first half of the program zeroes in on t-ball skills; the second half of the program helps children develop soccer skills. Gilbert Youth Volleyball League Summer 2018 Gilbert Parks and Recreation is thrilled to announce its Summer 2018 Gilbert Youth Volleyball Season. The league is open for both girls and boys ages 7-12 and is designed for beginning to intermediate level players. The season runs 6 weeks and each week consists of 1 indoor practice (Monday or Tuesday nights at McQueen Park Activity Center) and 1 game (Saturday mornings at South Valley Junior High School). The program begins the week of June 4. Registration fee is $90 per participant and includes coaching, player uniform, and games. Program information is available at GilbertRecreation.com. Registration begins at 7:00 AM on Tuesday, March 6. Deadline to register is May 17 or when league fills. Each team will be assigned a coach with a high level of volleyball knowledge. This program’s emphasis is skill development. Participants will learn the essential skills and components of the game. The league format gives participants the opportunity to receive the benefits that come with a team sport including; building confidence, developing relationships, and the value of commitment. Monthly bird walk at the Riparian. Walk is geared for adults. The walk will last about 90 min.–2 hours, starting at 6am with additional wrap up time at the end to go over the list of species seen and heard. FAMILY BIRD WALKS
The Gilbert Family Birdwalks are held every third Saturday of the month, October through March at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve. These free walks are sponsored by Desert Rivers Audubon, The Riparian Preserve, and Liberty Wildlife. We provide loaner binoculars, Bird Bingo Cards for kids, and expert leaders to take you around the ponds at both locations. Walks leave every 15 minutes or so and last about 45 minutes. Sensory play and Storytime welcomes all types of learners and is especially good for wigglers 1-5 years old who have trouble in regular storytime. Play time follows a shortened version of storytime where the library will provide puppets, manipulatives, and dramatic play activities for 20-25 minutes of intentional play which encourages early literacy skills! This playtime provides the necessary bonding with your child as well as social time for your child with their peers. Paws to Read pairs Delta-registered therapy animals and their handlers with young readers. Warm, brown eyes and happy grins make all the difference to children’s reading experiences resulting in an increase in reading levels and word recognition, and a higher desire to read and write. The animals listen and don’t tease, laugh, or judge the children. Plus, the animals love to be read to! Sign up for a therapy animal will begin at 10:15 a.m. for a 15-minute time slot between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Which animal the child will read to will be on a first-come, first-served basis the day of the program. Managing diabetes can be complex and frustrating. The Healthy Living Diabetes Self-Management Program is a workshop series designed to empower you to become an active self-manager of your diabetes.
