An Ice Melter That Makes A Positive Impact As mild Fall weather starts to turn into a Winter chill, highway departments and departments of public works are gearing up for the ice and snow that is coming right around the corner. If your vehicle runs into a patch of ice when going around the corner, the effects can be devastating. That’s why local officials apply ice melters like road salt to keep you safe. Unfortunately, road salt can be very damaging to the environment. The Dangers of Road Salt According to Smithsonian Magazine, an estimated 22 million tons of salt are scattered on U.S. roads every year. To put that into perspective, that’s about 130 lbs. of salt for every American. When the ice and snow melts, all of that salt has to go somewhere - which happens to be a big problem for waterways, soil, and our infrastructure. When road salt dissolves, it splits into sodium and chloride ions . When those ions run off roads and into the nearby environment, they can cause serious damage. According to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, these ions can enter freshwater bodies of water through runoff and even seep into groundwater, affecting drinking water. Chloride from road salts can be toxic to aquatic life. On top of that, it can affect wildlife and pets who can often ingest road salt. It also damages the vegetation that wildlife feed on by changing the chemical structure of the soil.

If you’ve noticed how road salt can corrode the paint on your vehicle if it’s not clean, it’s easy to see how road salt damages roads, bridges, vehicle parts, and equipment after years of heavy salt use. According to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, “The cost of corrosion damage and corrosion protection practices for highways and the automobile industry has been reported to cost a staggering 16-19 billion dollars per year.” Safe Road Services Steps Up Luckily, one New England-based company called Safe Road Services has developed a product that can reduce the amount of salt required to keep our roads safe. SAFE MELT™ is the company’s powerful de-icing product that can be used to reduce the amount of harmful chloride ions introduced to the environment from road salt by as much as 50%. Made from calcium chloride and a forestry byproduct of the paper-pulping process called lignin, this de-icer passes some of the toughest environmental safety tests in the country. It is even safe enough to eat as demonstrated on WGME CBS News in Portland, Maine although we don’t recommend it. Sweet Potato Recipes The ways to flavor sweet potatoes are endless, which is great news now that the holidays are fast approaching. The great thing about sweet potatoes is that you can make them savory or sweet and still wind up with a dish everyone loves.

Appetizer: Sweet

Potato Biscuits

Total Time: 5 minutes | Yields: 12 servings

Ingredients: - 1 and ¼ cups all-purpose flour

- ¼ cup butter, cut into cubes

- ½ teaspoon salt

- 5-7 tablespoons whole milk

- 1 tablespoon baking powder

Honey Butter Ingredients:

- 2 tablespoons sugar

- 1/2 cup butter

- ¾ cup mashed sweet potatoes

- 2 tablespoon honey

Cooking Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 425°. Grease skillet with vegetable shortening. 2. In a small bowl, whisk sweet potatoes and milk. 3. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal. 4. Add sweet potato mixture, knead until mixture comes together. 5. Pat dough to 1 inch thick. Cut into 2 inch round biscuits and place in skillet. Bake until lightly browned about 14 minutes. 6. Mix butter and honey until smooth, serve with hot biscuits

1. In a large pot of water add sweet potatoes and bring to a boil over medium high heat. Boil for about 20 minutes or until fork tender. Drain the water. Mash with the butter and add salt and pepper to taste.

- 3 Tablespoons Butter - Salt and Pepper - 1 pound ground beef - 1 small onion chopped - 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables - 1 12 ounce McCormick Simply Better Beef Gravy - 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce - Fresh chopped parsley for garnish

2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium sized skillet add the ground beef and onion. Salt and pepper to taste. Cook and crumble the beef until no longer pink and onions are tender. Drain the grease. Add frozen vegetables and beef gravy. Simmer for 4-5 minutes until the mixture starts to thicken. 3. Spoon the mashed sweet potatoes on top of the mixture. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until heated throughout. Broil the top of the potatoes for 2-3 minutes until it has browned.

Ingredients: - 2 ½ cup mashed sweet potatos - 2 ½ cup all-purpose flour - 2 tsp. baking soda - 2 tsp. baking powder - 1 tsp. kosher salt - 1 tbsp. ground ginger - ½ tsp. ground cloves - ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg - 1 cup unsalted butter

Cooking Instructions:

- 1 ¾ cup granulated sugar - ¼ cup brown sugar - 3 large eggs - 2 tsp. vanilla extract - 1 cup buttermilk Frosting Ingredients: - 1 cup unsalted butter - 2 cups marshmallow fluff - ½ tsp. kosher salt - 2 cups powdered sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Grease 2 9’ cake pans, line bottoms with parchment paper. 2. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt & spices. 3. In another bowl, cream together butter & sugars until fluffy. Beat in eggs, vanilla and sweet potatoes. 4. Add half dry ingredients and half the buttermilk and beat on low to combine. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. 5. Divide batter evenly between cake pans and bake 40-45 minutes. Cool on a rack while you make the frosting. 6. Make frosting by mixing butter and marshmallow fluff until smooth. Add salt and powdered sugar. Beat with hand mixer. 7. Spread one cake layer with frosting, then place second cake on top. This little truck, as Mark calls it, took him back and forth to New York for about 7 years, never letting him down once. Article by Mike Casale

Being in small business often means that you have had to make many sacrifices, as well as many tough decisions. After all, business owners have to face their ups and downs and know that the good times will also come with bad times. One of the things that we pride ourselves in with small business is knowing that we appreciate the things that got us to this point. Many times, it can be as simple as our first business mentor, or our first small little office space that got us started. How about our first vehicle that got us through a sales job. What if that vehicle helped us to build a business? Well, this is the case with Mark Lombari of Scituate, Rhode Island, and his 1988 Mazda B2200. Mark first bought the truck brand new in 1988. At the time, Mark’s dad and partner owned a woodworking company. Mark worked for them, but when they sold the company, Mark was forced to go on his own and do his own thing in business. At the time, he was only 21 years old. For all of his hard work, Mark’s dad and partner offered to buy him a truck, but nothing too expensive, just something real simple. Mark found a perfect little truck. It was being sold at the old Vachon Mazda, which is no longer in existence. The truck only cost $8200 brand new off the lot. The truck was the standard SE package, with no air conditioning and roll up windows. It is a 4-cylinder with automatic transmission. Once Mark acquired the truck, he was on his own, doing store work and store designs, based on his previous knowledge. One of the areas that Mark had to go was Manhattan in New York City. This little truck, as Mark calls it, took him back and forth to New York for about 7 years, never letting him down once. The truck was always in use, all day and every day. When it got to be about 16 years old, Mark parked the truck and decided to put it in storage, never to be touched. 16 years later, Mark’s dad passed away, and the father’s business partner passed away shortly after. Mark had previously discussed with them the opportunity to restore the truck, and bring it back to its original condition. It was kind of laughed about, and thought of as a lot of work, but after they had both passed away, Mark decided that this would be a great memory and tribute to the two men who got Mark started. This is when

it was finally decided that a restoration would make sense. Sentimental value is priceless, as Mark has clearly stated. As far as the restoration and cleanup of this truck, both the front and rear bumpers needed to be painted. The truck was actually caught in a hail storm some years back, so it needed to have a few dents on the hood and the roof repaired. Knowing that these were some of the things that needed to be cleaned up, Mark took it upon himself to visit with Todd Lewis at Xtreme Restorations, with whom he had worked with in the past. They had already done a great job on any other vehicles that Mark owned. While the truck didn’t need a ton of work, he wanted it to look new again, and be right, especially after sitting in storage for 16 years. Some of the other things that had to be repaired or replaced were the gas tank and a fine detail on the exterior of the truck. The interior is all original, although it did need to be detailed, with the carpets being temporarily removed and power washed. Mark’s original cell phone from 1989 was actually still in the truck, creating a piece of nostalgia that you almost never see today. The one bit of a challenge was to get the exact matching paint for the bumpers on this truck. The hood was also repainted. The whole truck was sanded and buffed out. This truck is all OEM and original. What Mark actually discovered about these trucks is there is a good strong following and culture with the Mazda B2200. Some people put Ford motors in them and they actually use the truck as a drifting truck. Others just collect them because of their rarity in the market. This generation of the Mazda truck was the last before it was placed on the Ford platform, so due to this, it does have some bit of nostalgia and supports the strong following. Now that the truck is on the road again and is restored, Mark will be taking this truck out for simple rides to enjoy the memories. This will be during the Spring and Fall, as Mark noted, without air conditioning this truck is not something that I will enjoy during the summer, but on those cool days and nights, it will be nice to get the truck out there. Mark might even consider going to a show or two that would accommodate a Mazda pickup truck. Make no mistake about it though, this truck is all about the sentimental value for Mark, and he couldn’t be more proud of the way that it came out.

Hasbro, Inc. Chances are when you were little you played with a Hasbro toy at some point. Hasbro, Inc. traces its origin to an enterprise founded in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1923 by Henry, Hilal, and Herman Hassenfeld, brothers who had emigrated to the United States from Poland. Working with the support of RISBDC Small Business Consultant Dennis McCarthy, she accessed critical funding, made important required changes, and is poised to bounce back. Amaral survived by looking at every aspect of her business—including renegotiating her monthly rent, lowering her insurance premium, developing video-based activities for her customers, and complying with all Rhode Island reopening mandates. Her reopening plan was approved by the RI Department of Health in July, and since then she has been successfully—and safely—operating in new ways. In addition to a virtual learning pod for school-aged students and streaming bedtime stories via Facebook Live, in midOctober Amaral is adding a six-week Saturday program that will allow parents to drop off kids from 9:00–11:30 a.m. “We will provide arts and crafts, music and movement, and free play to participants,” she reported. “We are also offering a free mask, tee shirt, and water bottle to all participants, which will promote the business, too.”

M E E T R A N DY B OT T E L L A A N D T H E In the local automotive industry, and specifically, the autobody industry, it seems like shops pop up everywhere, and sometimes they leave just about as fast as they came in. The businesses that thrive are the ones that put the most effort into building something special, through dedication, hard work, and attention to details that would otherwise be ignored. Building a strong business starts with a passion, and this is the case with Randy Bottella, and his team at Reliable Collision Repair, which has been around for almost 30 years. It all started when Randy was just 7 years old. Randy’s father had a mechanical repair shop, and in the building next door was a body shop. He would go with his dad on the weekends, just helping out, doing cleanup and watching his father work on cars. Randy was always drawn more to the auto body side of the business. For Randy, it was like magic. You would see a car come in, completely damaged, and within a short time, it was repaired back to new condition. Over the years Randy spent more and more time working in the auto body trade, choosing that as his career path. Randy started Reliable Collision Repair in 1992 in West Warwick. It was just Randy. Over time the business grew and grew, acquiring multiple buildings and properties around the original location. Around 4 years ago, Randy and his team severely outgrew the current location, as their volume of work was tremendous, and they needed a facility that could accommodate that volume, as well as the growing size of pickup trucks and commercial vehicles. Some pickup trucks and box vans have grown to be the size of a small school bus, so they needed to be able to find the perfect facility. Randy had been looking for a new home, but it needed to check off all of the boxes. It needed to be big enough, but also tall enough and needed to have enough parking. Also important was making sure that the building was in a good location, with easy access for the customers of Reliable Collision Repair. After extensive looking, Randy was able to agree to a deal to purchase the new location at 31 Providence Street in West Warwick, situated in the former Inskip Collision Center and originally the Lemay’s GMC dealership location. What separates Reliable collision from other collision repair facilities in the area is the fact that they are an A-Class shop. There are only about 32 of these class shops in the state. To achieve this level of licensing you must be certified by a car manufacturer, with aluminum repair capabilities. This involved numerous levels of training, as well as the manufacturer coming out and inspecting the facility and equipment to repair newer vehicles. Manufacturers are actually signing off on your operation stating that you have met factory standards for repairs on the vehicle that they manufacture, and they will do on-site inspections. This is significantly higher than what you would encounter in a traditional body shop. Reliable Collision repair also has the training and equipment to be able to handle all of the modern electronics driver assistance programs, avoidance technologies and sensors in each vehicle, avoiding having to utilize the dealership recalibration for these needs, during a repair. These systems, if not repaired correctly, can create another accident, as opposed to avoiding an accident, such as a lane shift or a blind spot issue due to a bad calibration. For example, if a radar cruise control system in the front grill is not properly calibrated, the sensor might not be able to judge the speed and accuracy of the vehicle in front of it, causing a possible collision. Randy has several additional certifications, not just the one that is required to be an A-Class shop. These range from other manufacturers’ certifications such as Ford, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, GM and many others.
