Instructions: Step 1 Mix honey, soy sauce, cornstarch, and garlic together in a small bowl. Step 2 Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir chicken until no longer pink, 5 to 8 minutes. Pour honey mixture over chicken; cook and stir until sauce thickens and coats chicken, 3 to 5 minutes. Shapiro Jeroen and Keriann Koeman moved to Rhode Island in 2015 to establish a beautiful tulip farm offering us the opportunity to buy tulip bulbs to plant in our gardens (or pots), to view hundreds of thousands of tulips at the tulip farm and to pick tulips so we can have fresh flowers in our homes. They also offer painting, yoga, cooking, and other forms of entertainment in the tulip gardens. Wicked Tulips is a very popular tourist attraction in the spring. Indeed, admission is limited, and tickets to view the tulips sell out almost immediately after they go on sale. For example, in 2019, approximately 2,000 people visited the farm each day for the 15 day season. The location of the flower farm does vary from year to year. From 2015 to 2019, the farm was located in Johnston. In 2020 it was located in North Kingston. One of the challenges in farming tulips is that the same farmland can only be used to grow tulips once every five years. So, the Johnston farm needed to rest, requiring the Koeman’s to find a new location for 2020. Stay tuned to find out the location for 2021 and beyond. A few years ago, when I was talking with Jeroen he explained that tulip farming is not something one learns in a couple of years. It takes a lifetime of experience to become a great tulip grower. Even with years of experience, everything does not go as expected, and one needs to do a lot of problem-solving to be successful. For example, rain increases the risk of disease, so figuring out how many bulbs to plant in an area is very important. Figuring out how deeply to plant while dealing with New England Rocks is also critical. If you plant too shallow, the tulips won’t perform. Additionally, the rocks in New England can break the machinery. Thus, Jeroen and Keriann are constantly overcoming new tulip related issues with improvising and creative solutions. There are non-tulip related issues as well. In 2019 it rained heavily most every day of the tulip season and the road to the tulip fields needed to be rebuilt several times per day on the wettest of days. In 2020 numerous distancing restrictions prevented having a U-pick type arrangement. Jeroen and Keriann transformed their business into a drive-thru viewing of the tulip fields and an opportunity to pick up precut flowers.

Jeroen and Keriann also established a by-subscription FaceBook community where we can go to learn about tulips, tulip farming, and view entertainment in the tulip fields all year round. They also sold Rhode Island grown bulbs raw and unprocessed right from their farm. These bulbs will give folks the experience of propagating their own bulbs just like tulip farmers while they plant some happiness in their own gardens. Between the drive-thru, the bulb sales, and the subscription, they made 2020 into a successful season!!! Jeroen and Keriann shared these ideas: • •

Believe in yourself and the people around you. Be flexible. When you encounter a problem, make a list of the resources and options available to you. Think creatively, and you are likely to come up with something new and exciting. If you are buying a specialty product such as tulip bulbs and you have the opportunity, buy from a local farmer or business rather than from a big box store or online catalog. You will get a good product and the benefit of expert advice from the business team while supporting your community. Have fun and don’t get caught up trying to create the perfect garden. We make mistakes all the time. Sometimes those mistakes come out pretty amazing.

They’re open from 9-4 every day and limit the number of guests in the zoo at any given time. Tickets are sold online only, so don’t forget to get one before you go! You can learn everything else you need to know on their website. As an added bonus, the animals will be just as happy to see you as you are to see them!

The weather is getting hot, the summer breeze is rolling in, and there’s nowhere you’d want to be more than on a beach, right? Luckily, RI state beaches are finally open. There are parking restrictions put in place on busy days, so come with a backup plan in case you can’t get a spot at your favorite beach!

The Block Island Ferry is opening back up daily on June 26th. Block Island encompasses the best of both worlds, being a beach day and a shopping trip in a single package. Be sure to pack your sunscreen, because you’ll be out in the sun all day experiencing everything Block Island has to offer.

With various restrictions lifted this month, golf courses have been able to reopen provided they distance tee times and follow other social distancing regulations. Out of state guests are also allowed to golf now as long as their 14-day self-quarantine is over. You will have to reserve a tee time over the phone, but that’s a small price to pay for a round of golf this summer.

In 1947, Ken Gallup, saw a need for a company that would cater to the small commercial fishing fleet in Galilee. He sold his Warwick gas station, moved to Snug Harbor and founded Point Judith Engine and Supply. When Ken’s son Barry took over the reins in 1965, the company’s name changed to Rhode Island Engine Co., Inc. (RIE). Over the next 25 years Barry ran the business and added Caterpillar, Cummins, Northern-Lights and Lugger engines to the lineup. As time went on Barry’s sons Barry Jr. (Jay) and David were phased into the business and RIE grew and added more engine lines and different products. Today, RIE is a factory-authorized full sales and service dealership for every major marine diesel engine brand. RIE has a modern 8,000 square foot facility equipped with the latest tools and technology to install and repair today’s sophisticated marine diesel engines, transmissions and AC generators. In addition to engine and transmission parts, they stock thousands of marine-related products such as oil, filters, electrical supplies, hoses, belts, antifreeze, pipe fittings in a variety of materials, hydraulic adapters and make custom hydraulic hoses on site. If they don’t have it, they can get it overnight if necessary. There is also a retail store open to the public that carries foul weather gear, boots, gloves, knives, paint, tools, and safety supplies and more! They even sell Clam Rakes! Located on the water in the Port of Galilee in Narragansett, RIE has room to dock 4-100 foot and 2-50 foot vessels for dockside service or they can send one of their certified road technicians to you. They can repair or rebuild just about any marine diesel engine, transmission, hydraulic system, and generator made and they are justifiably well known up and down the New England Coast for new installations and re-powers. In addition to overhauls and repowers, they also design and install new electrical, exhaust, hydraulic systems and deck machinery. Their customers range from large commercial fishing vessels, Tug Boats, Ferry Boats, and barges to smaller lobster and tuna boats. RIE’s main focus is on commercial vessels as opposed to pleasure boats.

RIE’s owners, Jay and David’s job is to get the customer back to work as quickly as possible with the least amount of down time. They both started working for the company while they were in high school so the fact that they learned from the bottom up has provided a unique perspective to managing the business. As President, Jay developed a company culture from the top down whereby satisfying customers is the number one priority. He feels if this happens everything else will fall into place. Jay and Dave take pride in providing personal and direct service to customers and make repair recommendations and suggestions as if it’s their own vessel and money. Olneyville New York System 18 Plainfield St in Providence & 1012 Reservoir Ave in Cranston In the early 1920’s, Nicholas Stevens and his father Anthony came to the United States from Greece and settled in Brooklyn, NY. Brooklyn is where they operated a very popular candy shop. By the 1930’s, Nicholas and his family moved to Rhode Island and opened a small restaurant where they had a very limited menu, including hot weiners. Gerbs Allergy Friendly Foods has been a RISBDC client working with Director Amit Basnet since June of 2016. As the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premium allergy-friendly foods manufacturer, Gerbs is one of a handful of companies with products that are free from the top 14 FDA (Food & Drug Administration) recognized food allergens. Initially, Gerbs came to the RISBDC looking for help with formulating and executing growth strategies. Director Amit assisted with connecting Gerbs with Polaris MEP to design their expansion layout and maximize their production efficiency. As of 2017, with the help of RISBDC and Polaris MEP, Gerbs has doubled its production space and has entered Canadian Amazon markets. When the COVID-19 pandemic began earlier this year, Gerbs experienced dramatic increases in sales volume on their website, eBay, and especially the Amazon platform. Towards the end of February, they began to see the first signs of how the stay-at-home orders issued due to the virus would increase website traffic and ultimately, sales. As a result of their good standing with their suppliers, Gerbs was able to procure enough supplies to quickly meet these forecasted increases. At this time, owners Sennen and Galen Conte were told by contacts at Amazon and through statements from RI Governor Raimondo that they were deemed essential due to the nature of their business - producing stable, safe, and consumable food items. They immediately initiated CDC and RI Board of Health safe distance guidelines, including hand sanitizing and washing, masks, gloves, and temperature reading stations to ensure staff safety.

In mid-March, sales dramatically spiked, causing them to reformulate production schedules, sometimes on an hourly/ daily basis, to ensure they kept the supply chain between Gerbs and Amazon Prime Fulfillment services open and to eliminate lost sales due to out of stock items. This led to hiring two more production staff. Ultimately, they had to make the tough decision to temporarily pause all sales channels outside of Amazon Prime. As a point of pride, the Gerbs team worked tirelessly around the clock for several week to meet the increased demand, and they are happy to report they never closed their doors (even if it meant working long days). Due to the high demand, they saw their 2020 Q1 sales increase by 81% compared to 2019. Even during these challenging times, and the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 crisis in the small business community, Gerbs was able to contribute to the local economy.
