Investing in life insurance is a way of showing you care about your love ones’ future. Maybe you recently got married or had your first child or now you are an empty nester. This all affects your coverage. If you don’t have life insurance yet, this is a crucial element that will financially protect your family. It is very easy to renew your auto insurance coverage year after year without giving it much thought, but it is important to look over your current policy and see where you can save money. This is all determined on how much you drive, your current driving record, the type of car you drive, where you live, how old you are and much more.

by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro

Like many children, Mariana R. Silva-Buck’s seven-year-old daughter Sofia wanted to open a lemonade stand. Mariana agreed that operating the stand would be an excellent learning experience for her daughter who was in the first grade. On the other hand, Mariana (who earned her MBA from Bay Atlantic University (BAU International)) determined that having a stand in front of their house would lead to failure because they lived on a dead-end street with little traffic. She explored operating the stand downtown, but determined downtown traffic was not sufficient to run a stand on weekends when her daughter was not in school. Thus, Mariana and Sofia decided to establish their lemonade stand at special events such as fairs, conferences and conventions. They designed a cute label, made some lemonade and established their stand. Thus, Little Maven Lemonade was born. It quickly became a huge success!!! Patrons invited Mariana and Sofia to bring the stand to additional events. Sofia decided that the stand needed to diversify from “plain old lemonade” to lemonade from different cultures. (Did you know that there were different lemonade recipes in different parts of the world?) Thus, they added a Brazilian Lemonade to their product line. Later they added Asian Lemonade. Next year they plan to add Indian Lemonade. Currently they are exploring the various versions of Indian Lemonade to decide which one to feature. Additionally, production moved from home to a commercial kitchen (Hope & Main in Warren, Rhode Island). As a result of the move Sofia (due to her age) was no longer allowed in the kitchen. Thus, Mariana makes the lemonade. Sofia labels the sealed bottles at home. Additionally, Sofia is an equal partner in all business and marketing decisions. While Mariana earned her MBA from Atlantic Bay University,

Little Maven Lemonade A Mother & Daughter Run Business

she reports that Sofia has a doctoral degree in opinions. Mariana reports that Sofia is a very strict supervisor, insisting on only the best quality products and advertising campaigns. Both partner in the sales department. When they are not working both love Rhode Island beaches. Their current favorite is Second Beach in Newport. Mariana shared these ideas: • • • • •

Include lemonade in your drinks and deserts. Add a few spoons of lemonade to flavor your water. Consider starting a small business with your children. In addition to being a great learning and team building experience, it may end up being a profitable enterprise. Your children have great ideas. Listen to them and help them develop the ideas. Support you community by being an activist and by patronizing small businesses when it is possible to do so. When starting a food related business, partner with local restaurants and organizations by offering samples of your products with their patrons and attendees. Customers want to sample food before buying. Try a variety of foods from many nations and make learning about many cultures a family event.

Shop Local Rhody readers are encouraged to refer to Mariana’s website (https://www.LittleMavenLemonade.com) to order delicious lemonade. Mariana welcomes emails (Mariana@LittleMavenLemonade.Com) for questions about lemonade, establishing a family business, ordering products or arranging to feature lemonade at your expos, fairs and other special events. I would like to thank Industrial Consultant Dr. Margarita Posada Cossuto for helpful comments.

Not only is it the best billiard hall in Rhode Island, with its large and well maintained pool tables, but it is a great restaurant if you are looking for some delicious Italian eats and a place to meet up with new people and spend time with old friends! Rhode Island Billiard, Bar & Bistro was founded by Phyllis and Tony Costanzo in 1982 when pool started making it’s appearance into American culture. Over the years, both men have worked to always improve the facility from new bars to an updated kitchen and everything in between. They make it a point to stay present with the trends people love. The restaurant reflects their culture and is a vital part of who they are. They have made it into a desirable low-lit atmosphere where you feel right at home. In addition to the excellent food and full bar, the venue itself couldn’t be more perfect for a party or event. It is very spacious and can hold hundreds of people, while also giving them the option to mingle with each other when competing in a game of pool. It is a fun, laid back atmosphere which also has arcade games, darts and juke boxes. Nothing like

Celebrate Local Creativity with Ohanga | BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Ohanga Revolutionizes How We Celebrate Local Creativity CITY, RHODE ISLAND USA—Ohanga™ Inc., an early phase start-up, launched its online creative market this month. Ohanga is facilitating the connection between creatives and consumers, democratizing access to fine and functional art, and finally valuing the story behind each and every work and artist. “This global pandemic has exposed an overlooked problem in the art industry: namely, that artists are expected to run their own art businesses as a one wo/man show. The struggling artist stereotype has wrongly been normalized. Ohanga will change that,” states Subham Sett, co-founder. Visit Ohanga here: www.ohanga.com. The Rhode Island-based company, founded amid the COVID-19 pandemic, is assisting the hard-hit local art and artisanal community by driving art commerce through storytelling. Ohanga is taking giant steps towards, “a world where artists can grow and share their passions undeterred, and where communities can celebrate the arts and champion the creatives around them.” - Ohanga’s mission statement. Ohanga is achieving its goals through several service offerings. While still in its pilot phase, Ohanga’s Aloha Pass™—a rewards system tied to the purchase of locally sourced and carefully curated themed gift boxes, for which the contributing artists are paid up front—has been very successful in the first weeks since it was made available to the public. Curated Ohanga Gift Boxes information here: https://www.ohanga.com/gift-subscription-box/#winteraloha “The Ohanga Gift Box was the best surprise to come home to after a long week working in the public schools during a pandemic! The curation and presentation of its products are lovely and incredibly impactful; knowing that this purchase helps support local artists makes the gift that much better!” - Karen Murray from Jamestown, Rhode Island. The Amplify Pass™, for which we are accepting early applicants from the greater Rhode Island area, elevates a creatives’ brand through various storytelling, marketing, business, and fulfillment channels. “Thanks to Ohanga, I don’t have to choose between promoting and creating: Ohanga takes care of my art business so that I can focus on what I do best— my artwork.” - Laurie Charpentier, Ohanga Pebble Artist and Owner of Max’s Farm in Hope Valley, Rhode Island. Originally inspired by the struggles of a single artist, under the leadership of founders Yuping Wang and Subham Sett, Ohanga has now expanded to support over twenty-five local Rhode Island artists and artisans, from traditional painters to photographers to lavender farmers to natural healers. Their decades of experience in major technology companies such as Amazon and Dassault Systèmes bridge the gap between the tech and the art world in Ohanga’s pursuit of a global-local business model. By providing artists with a secure income, Ohanga is helping them unleash the full force of unbound, creative minds. You can learn more about Ohanga’s origin here https://www.ohanga.com/origin-story. Add the rest of cheddar cheese 1 cup at a time to the beer mixture, stirring until cheese melts and is smooth. 5. Stir in ¾ of the bacon, saving the remaining bits for the top of dip. 6. Spray baking dish and pour dip into the dish and top with remaining cheese and crumbled bacon. Bake 20-25 minutes. Serve with chips.

Is Your Home Holiday Ready? | BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Is Your Home Holiday Ready? Santa may be coming down the chimney this holiday season but that doesn’t mean we want septic coming up your home’s pipes! Avoid a messy situation this season and prepare ahead of time.

Ronnie’s Professional Services put together a quick checklist to get you though the holiday season (and sorry, no, they can’t help with the gift shopping!) Pump your septic prior to having guests over. The last thing you want to do is have a septic emergency pop up just as you and your guests sit down to eat! Properly dispose of grease. That holiday ham sure is delicious, but you should never dump the grease down the drain. It can cause damage to you system! Dump grease in a glass jar and throw it out. Cut down on water usage. Try to limit the amount of water you use, for example only run the dishwasher when it is full. Flush with care. An important reminder to only flush natural waste down the toilet. We get it, nobody likes fruitcake, but don’t flush it!

Typically septic pumpings should be preformed every 2-3 years, but this year with COVID-19 there is less on-the-go outside of the house, and more “go” in the home. Consider booking a pumping with Ronnie’s soon! Schedule online at pumpitoutri.com or call (401) 294-9487. BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

The Elms

3 6 7 B e l l e v u e Av e n u e , N e w p o r t , R h o d e I s l an d The Elms is a well-known mansion located at 367 Bellevue Avenue in Newport which was completed in 1901. The mansion cost around 1.5 million dollars to build back in the day and was designed by Philadelphia architect, Horace Trumbauer. The mansion was built for Mr. and Mrs. Edward Berwind. They lived in a smaller cottage in Newport for years and spent summers there, but they soon decided they wanted a larger space for their society parties.

mansion appears to be just two stories high, but a third is hidden behind the parapets that line the roof.

The mansion was built of white limestone and had 50 rooms standing over three stories. From the outside, the

When both Mr. and Mrs. Berwind died, the home was left to Mrs. Berwind’s sister Julia. She died in 1961 and left The Elms to her sister’s son, Charles Dunlap. He was unable to maintain this gorgeous property and he sold it to developers based out of New York who intended on replacing it with a shopping center. An auction was held and all the furnishings were sold. Most of the valuable art went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When the stock market took a tumble in 1962, the Preservation Society of Newport County was able to purchase it and keep it from being destroyed.

When The Elms was finished being built, the Berwind family celebrated with a large party. Roses adorned every corner of the interior, 400 guests gathered and orchestras played in the grounds. Mr. Berwind was the President of the Newport Country Club and he gained a reputation for hosting some of the best parties of the Gilded Age!

From 1962, the Society opened its doors to the public as a house-museum and it remains one of the most popular in Newport! The home is even decorated beautifully during the holiday season!

Charlie’s Sugar House Charlies Sugar House in Coventry, Rhode Island is the place to go for syrup nearly straight from the trees. Charlie has been tapping the trees for his whole life and was taught by his father for a 4-H project that got out of hand. He enjoys sharing his passion with visitors and is always willing to stop what he’s doing and give an impromptu tour of the sugar house. In the sugar house, you can see where the process takes place. This process takes place in the spring because the starch from the winter is turning into sugar. They then drill a hole into the healthy trees and then put the spout in and start collecting. Right after the is collected it goes straight to be boiled leading it to be the syrup so many love! Charlies Sugar House can be found in grocery stores and now newly able to be sold on their website! www.rimaplesyrup.com

Cracking the Code RI

RIDDLE

ROOM

PIVOTS

Article by Josh Daly

Being stuck inside a room trying to figure your way out may sound a little too much like everyday life these days, but for Byron Delmonico, the entrepreneur behind RI Riddle Room escape room, he’s not only used to it: he makes it fun! Delmonico first came to the RI Small Business Development Center in 2017 early on in his business for more routine support around bookkeeping and marketing. But when the pandemic hit, he looked to RISBDC for timely, relevant, and accurate information about small business programs and assistance. With the support of RISBDC business consultant Josh Daly, Delmonico secured funds from the SBA Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL), and the Restore RI grant program through Commerce RI. These funds helped to stabilize and improve cash flow; cover rent and expenses; retain, hire, and train staff; and increase advertising—which Delmonico reports has been “crucial to our growth and letting people know we are open, clean, and safe.” RI Riddle Room’s ability to pivot quickly has been impressive. At the start of the pandemic, they developed new virtual group games to be played at home. They were originally developing these games for corporate team building opportunities, but found a strong new market of customers stuck at home. Now, Delmonico says, as things

have been opening back up, “being the one of the only venues offering small capacity, private group and in-person entertainment, we have experienced week-overweek growth.” Delmonico adds, “Without the help received and the dynamic planning, we would not be in the position we are today. I can’t say enough positive things about these programs.” Recently the RI Riddle Room launched their newest inperson game, Imaginasium of Intrigue, at their Warwick location. You can learn more about their current escape room offerings and COVID-19 procedures on their website at RIRiddleRoom.com. Are you ready to start writing your business success story? Attend one of our upcoming workshops or set up a free oneon-one counseling session. Register at RISBDC.org and get in the game today. Josh Daly is the Southern RI Regional Director of the Rhode Island Small Business Development Center. The Rhode Island Small Business Development Center at URI is part of a national network of nearly 1,000 business assistance centers that provide counseling and training to small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. Partially funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, we help businesses to succeed from start-up to maturity.
