Building RI Businesses WITH

Commercial Drywall & Construction Co., Inc. Newport welcomes a new restaurant, hotel, and several retail stores in Hammett’s Wharf Among the historic buildings, restaurants, and shops of Newport’s stunning waterfront, a new building has risen to add to the scenery, and a local construction company has had a big hand in building it.

Since it was founded in 2000, Commercial Drywall & Construction Co., Inc. has been helping build businesses in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. While drywall may be their specialty, their team of over 100 employees offers a wide variety of services. Working closely with their sister company, Commercial Pro Painting, LLC, they have the manpower, experience, and capability of satisfying the needs of any commercial construction project. Some of their other notable projects include Babson College, The Chocolate Factory Apartments, The Meditech Building in Foxboro, Harding Green in Worcester, and Benjamin and Nathan in Fall River. If you would like to learn more about Commercial Drywall & Construction Co., Inc. visit comdry.com.

The Hammett’s Wharf Hotel is a brand new destination that opened just this summer, offering 84 luxurious rooms, a 4,000-square-foot waterfront restaurant, and 3,000 square feet of retail shopping space. Built on 3.4 acres of land, this beautiful hotel is an impressive feat of construction. The building is stunning from the outside in - and the building’s interior beauty is largely thanks to the hard-working team at Commercial Drywall & Construction Co., Inc. As experts in drywall and commercial construction, this team is no stranger to working on incredible projects throughout New England.

Calling All Artists for

WINDOWS ON PAWTUCKET A PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION

The Pawtucket Foundation, a non-profit organization based out of Pawtucket, RI focuses on bettering their community’s future by mobilizing and coordinating research, information, talent and resources to positively impact the city.

They are partnering with Art League RI on a new program called “Windows on Pawtucket.” Creative installations will be replacing the vacant, rundown storefront windows in the inner core of downtown Pawtucket. Their main goal is to turn a negative into a positive by getting more people walking on the sidewalks and made aware of the city’s true beauty, while also promoting the creative, small businesses of the state’s and city’s artistic workforce. The windows project will be the start of reimagining the identity of the Pawtucket neighborhood, bringing a new sense of vibrancy and walkability. A simpler way to look at this is an outdoor, downtown wide open art studio for everyone to enjoy. This project is being designed and supported by Jan Brodie, the Executive Director at The Pawtucket Foundation as well as an entire Art League committee.

Together, we can revitalize

downtown Pawtucket through artistic expression!

They are seeking proposals for artwork to be installed in 20+ storefront display windows and the plan is to install the art sometime around mid-September. Artwork will be showcased for a minimum of 10 months. Artists are invited to submit artwork for consideration in the windows or artwork may be created for a site-specific installation upon selection by the jurying committee.

If you are interested in submitting your art work or want to learn more about this project, visit artleagueri.com.

401 946 1900 david@luciercpa.com

2 cups nonfat plain Greek yogurt

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Place parchment paper on a baking sheet. Lightly coat with cooking spray. In a large bowl, use a sturdy spatula to combine the self-rising flour and yogurt until the mixture clumps to a shaggy dough. Dump the mixture onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead the dough together by hand for about 5 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If your dough is sticky add more flour or use less yogurt. Divide the dough into 8 equal parts. Shape each portion of dough into a ball. Use your thumbs to make a hole in the center of each ball. Gently pull and stretch until the dough is a uniform sized ring. Repeat with remaining rounds. Flour your hands as needed. Arrange the shaped bagels on the prepared baking sheet. Mix together the egg wash by whisking the egg, salt, and water in a small bowl until smooth. Brush the egg wash mixture over the bagels. Sprinkle desired toppings over bagels. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, rotating the baking sheet midway through baking. Remove from the oven. Increase oven temperature to 450 degrees F. Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for another 3 to 4 minutes until the tops of the bagels have browned. Let bagels cool before eating. Enjoy!

by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro Erin DeThomas opened Makers to provide educational and engaging art experiences for children, toddlers and preschoolers through age 12 in April 2019. Erin offers art classes for kids, birthday party programs, pop-up classes and virtual art programs throughout New England, outdoors, and in her Warren, RI studio. Erin emphasizes process art, which values the creative process more than the outcome, and is very interested in nurturing her student’s cognitive development through art experiences. Erin, her husband, Matt, her children Emma (age 6) and Jack (age 4) and Sawyer (her golden retriever) reside in Bristol, Rhode Island. Matt is a native Rhode Islander and Erin a native of Colorado. Prior to moving to Rhode Island Erin taught 2nd and 5th grades. When Erin moved to Rhode Island she surveyed art related businesses and found that there were numerous music and adult paint party businesses, but few programs focusing on art for children. Erin saw this as the perfect opportunity to develop a business utilizing her life-long passion for art, and her educational background as a teacher and as a student (Bachelor’s degree from University of Colorado and Master’s Degree from Simmons College). Erin shared these creative activities for you to lead with your children (ages 2 to 12): •

Shaving Cream Construction. Help your children turn their building blocks into sky scrapers and other forms of abstract art. Just purchase a few cans of inexpensive aerosol shaving cream. Use the shaving cream as glue to connect the blocks. At the end of the day, make some photos of the construction to keep the memory and also because the shaving cream won’t hold a long time. Cleanup is easy. Simply wash the blocks with warm water and allow them to dry. Find the Objects Sensory Play. After the children go to bed gather some small toys, buttons, coins and similar objects that will not rust (and are big enough to not be swallowed if the children are young). Fill a shallow baking pan with shaving cream and hide the objects in the shaving cream.

• •

• •

Art Activities For Your

Family

Freeze overnight. The next day let the children dig through the shaving cream as it defrosts to find the hidden objects. If you have younger and older children, make this into a family game by only allowing the older children to use one hand or search while blindfolded. Bubble Painting. Pour kid’s bubbles onto a plate. Add a few drops of dish soap. Add a few drops of food coloring to the mix. Make a bubble wand by wrapping a pipe cleaner around an unsharpened pencil or similar stick. Use the wand to blow painted bubbles onto the paper or canvas. Branch, Leaf and Flower Painting. Similar to bubble painting, using natural objects as your paint brush. Stamp with Household Items. Simply gather a number of household items such as small toy cars and tempera paint from an art supply or discount retailer. Place ink on the car’s tires or other interesting objects. Drive the car across paper or canvas and stamp away with the other objects. Water Balloon Painting. Fill some balloons with water so they expand, but do not come close to bursting. Roll them in paint. See what designs you can make. Styrofoam Construction. Ask stores which receive large items packed with large pieces of Styrofoam to save the packing material for you. Help your children develop fine and gross motor coordination hammering golf tees into the Styrofoam to make artistic projects. Finish a Drawing. Cut out faces from magazines and paste on blank paper. Draw the rest of the bodies and the background.

Shop Local Rhody readers are encouraged to refer to Erin’s FaceBook and Instagram pages (MakersRI) for more family activities and to check out her MakersRI.Com website for information about the programs she offers. Erin welcomes calls (401.318.6725) and emails (MakersRhodeIsland@GMail.Com) with questions about activities or to schedule a class or arrange a special event for your family. PARKS & ZOOS

BY THE WATER

Roger Williams Park Zoo

State Beaches

If your children have been cooped up inside, here is some great news for you. Roger Williams Park Zoo has opened up with new social distancing measures. They’re open from 9-4 every day and limit the number of guests in the zoo at any given time. Tickets are sold online only, so don’t forget to get one before you go! You can learn everything else you need to know on their website. As an added bonus, the animals will be just as happy to see you as you are to see them!

The weather is getting hot, the summer breeze is rolling in, and there’s nowhere you’d want to be more than on a beach, right? Luckily, RI state beaches are finally open. There are parking restrictions put in place on busy days, so come with a backup plan in case you can’t get a spot at your favorite beach!

GETAWAYS

GOLF COURSES

Block Island

Triggs Golf (and other RI golf courses)

The Block Island Ferry is opening back up daily on June 26th. Block Island encompasses the best of both worlds, being a beach day and a shopping trip in a single package. Be sure to pack your sunscreen, because you’ll be out in the sun all day experiencing everything Block Island has to offer.

With various restrictions lifted this month, golf courses have been able to reopen provided they distance tee times and follow other social distancing regulations. Out of state guests are also allowed to golf now as long as their 14-day self-quarantine is over. You will have to reserve a tee time over the phone, but that’s a small price to pay for a round of golf this summer.

OUTDOOR MOVIES

SHOPPING

Rustic Tri View Drive-In

Farmer’s Markets

While it may be a blast from the past, the Rustic Tri View Drive-In is the perfect way to have a movie night with friends and family while still staying safe. They’re now open Thursday through Sunday with tickets available for purchase online. Fill your gas tank, grab some snacks, and grab some tickets to a drive-in movie this weekend!

Across the state, farmer’s markets are beginning to open for the summer. The open-air markets are a great place to support local businesses and find great produce and artisan products to use during the week.

The first time I met Sonny, he said to me, Todd, I can’t find a real nice 56’ Ford F-100 anywhere, so I want you and your team to build me a really nice one instead. Article by Mike Casale

For over 30 years, the following and studying of automobiles has been a true passion of mine. From a young boy going to his first car show, to a grown man building a local car magazine, I have seen many amazing cars and trucks, and the stories behind the people who own them have been just as valuable in my experiences. So, when I first met Todd Lewis at Xtreme Restorations in Slatersville, RI, I knew almost instantly that we were going to have an incredible connection. The thing is, we go to local car shows and cruise nights, and we see some amazing vehicles on display, but what we often don’t realize is what went into finding that vehicle, restoring that vehicle, or even just keeping up with the vehicle. That is where Xtreme Restorations has always helped out. Todd and his team are able to take a vehicle that you own, or even one that you would like to find, and they have the ability to bring it back to life. In many cases, they find ways to make it even better than you ever could have remembered it to be, through their dedication and effortless attention to detail. So, of course, when Todd reached out to me a few months ago and informed me that he was getting close to wrapping up a build on a 1956 Ford F-100, I just had to come by and check this out for myself. And yes, that is the ever-so-rare 1956 Ford F-100 I am referring to. It was a one year model. The 1956 Ford F-100 even has it’s own unique following of individuals. Luckily for me, when I arrived at Xtreme Restorations to take a look at this truck in person, Todd also invited the owner of the Ford F-100, Mr. Kenneth Hopkins, as we call him, “Sonny”. Speaking of this unique following, Sonny is a purist when it comes to this year Ford F-100. This is his passion, and he greatly emphasized that, not only through his dedication and involvement with this restoration, but the fact that he also owns several other 1956 Ford F-100’s, although none of them are anything like this particular build. As for the truck itself, the specs are generally considered stock, except for a few alterations. It is a 56 Ford F-100 Custom Cab with all factory options. This truck has the very rare Ford-O-Matic (Automatic 2-speed transmission). Even rarer is the big wrap around window. Ford only made

6200 of these trucks. It has the deluxe interior with a headliner and radio, again, being hard to find. The motor is a 292 bored over and now displaces 312 cubic inches. All 1956 Ford F100 engines were painted bright yellow. When Sonny acquired this truck it had been mildly customized by prior owner. The original front suspension had been removed and replaced with a hotrod style Mustang II unit. Sony had removed that unit and provided Xtreme with all the parts to return truck to 100% factory stock. They also added the dual exhaust to sharpen up the look and sound. The truck was originally built by Ford in San Jose, California, although with the rarity of the parts on this truck, it took several different trucks to put this one fully together. I asked Sonny how he acquired the parts for this truck, and he let me know that it was a great challenge, as he was very particular about what went on the truck. He wanted original only parts, and while that can’t be had with some things such as rubber, overall, most of this truck has all original parts, including the Ford-O-Matic emblem. After getting a chance to sit with Sonny and Todd and discuss this truck in detail, I could just hear the passion in Sonny’s voice, as well as the pride for the fact that this restoration had been completed. Todd told me, and I quote, “the first time I met Sonny, he said to me, Todd, I can’t find a real nice 56’ Ford F-100 anywhere, so I want you and your team to build me a really nice one instead”. There is no greater pride than knowing the Xtreme team can truly deliver. That is exactly what they did with this truck. I asked Sonny, “what do you plan to do with this truck now that it is complete”, and his reply was, “Maybe take it to a few shows, I don’t know yet, I just want to get it home and enjoy it”. After all, isn’t that why we do this with restorations, to sit back and enjoy it. It allows us to bring back memories, or even take us to a place of happiness that can sometimes be hard to find with everything going on right now. If you are interested in an automobile restoration project, or just even looking for some ideas, feel free to reach out to Todd and his team at Xtreme Restorations. They are a local Rhode Island business that works hard everyday for their customers, just like Sonny. The goal is simple, make every build great, and their restoration team fully supports that mentality.

Flying Horse Carousel 151-153 Bay Street, Watch Hill, Rhode Island When you first arrive to the beaches down in Watch Hill, the blue water and gorgeous scenery blow you away. You will realize that the area is more than just a beach town, it is a town filled with so much history and beauty. The Flying Horse Carousel is a venue located down near the beach which attracts a crowd every day during the summer months. Back in 1883, a traveling circus came through the area and brought along items that would entertain children. When the show left town, they took everything with them except for the carousel. No one is certain to why the carousel was left behind, but the prevalent theory is that maintaining the carousel was extremely expensive and they were not interested in paying for the repairs any longer.

The Flying Horse Carousel was originally built in 1867 by Andrew Christian and Charles Dare Company, a group based out of NYC. The design is very unique and something you have never seen anywhere else in the country. The horses are suspended on chains, not poles like most versions you see today. Since the horses are on chains, it makes it feel like you are flying when riding it. This unique piece of history has had its ups and downs. In 1938, a hurricane ripped through the area and the carousel was damaged. Horses were found buried in the sand dunes and pieces had to be replaced. In 1948, the wooden horses were fixed up by a local woman named Harriet Moore to ensure that the carousel would remain in tip-top shape for generations to come.In 1993, a local artists, Gary Anderson, was hired to refurbish the horses, and help make them look new again. The people of Watch Hill have taken this carousel under their wing and made it into their own. The outside horses have a series of brass rings surrounding the carousel and if the rider can grab one of the rings, they get to ride again for FREE! Today, the carousel runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. It only costs $1 to ride on the inside horses and $1.50 on the outside, allowing your children to experience a piece of history for almost free. Next time you and your family take a ride to Watch Hill, be sure to test out the oldest continually running carousel in the United States! You won’t regret it.

Article by Paul Harden

When Jim Dowd and Sandra Bonazoli met in art school, the two jewelers started a relationship based on a love of metalsmithing. Inspired by beautiful vintage kitchenware, Jim and Sandra had an idea for a collection of metal giftware and keepsakes that incorporated thoughtfulness and charm, qualities they felt were missing from many modern products. They brought their designs for cups, spoons, and utensils to the American Craft Council tradeshow and since then, hundreds of stores and customers throughout the country have placed orders. Beehive Handmade’s products have been featured in Oprah, Country Living and Better Homes and Gardens and exhibited at the American Craft Museum in New York City. As the business grew, they moved to Rhode Island to partner with a generations-old Silversmithing manufacturer. Later, after their long-term manufacturing partner announced they were ceasing operations after 50 years, Jim and Sandra came to the RISBDC in the summer of 2019. Through their work with SBDC consultants Paul Harden and Peter Conopask, they became confident that they could do their own manufacturing.
