My Education By Entertainment TV game show style programs and consulting services are designed to help people achieve their goals and potential by learning more about how they think. They are based upon what I learned while studying at the University of Rochester (UR) where I earned my BA and the Ohio State University where I earned my MA and PhD degrees, all in psychology. They are also based upon what I learned early in my career designing and testing products (so that people could use them safely, enjoyably, effectively and efficiently) and mid-career managing teams which designed, implemented and tested a variety of programs involving technical and strategic learning, new employee orientation, university education and career planning for employees. Some of the activities which appear in my programs were offered while I was teaching psychology courses at the community college, college and university levels. My achievements have been recognized with Fellow status in the American Psychological Association, the Eastern Psychological Association and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. I was born in Rhode Island, attended the Henry Barnard School and graduated from the Providence Country Day School. I returned to Rhode Island 15 years ago. My business, Ronald G. Shapiro, PhD, LLC, official opened on June 7, 2013.

Listen very carefully when someone asks a question. Then respond to the question being asked. So many times people answer the question they think they were asked rather than the question they were asked. Allow enough time to do the work you set out to do. While you may be able to work a lot faster, you will probably make more errors and have more accidents, too.

Avoid multitasking whenever you can. Multitasking tends to decrease productivity because so much energy is devoted to switching back and forth between the various tasks. Make any product, process or system you may be designing as easy as possible for people to use. While people are very flexible, the more people are asked to do something unnatural the slower and less accurate the people will be. Show as much as possible, rather than relying on telling, when doing a presentation. Repeat important concepts at least 3 times and do not try to cover too much material in a limited time. Learn as much as you can about people you are working with. As you explain something check back to be sure that you are conveying what you intend to convey. Study a little at the time over a longer period of time rather than studying a lot of material at once. It is more effective.

Melon Prosciutto Skewers Yields: 12

Ingredients: - 1 cantaloupe - 12 fresh basil leaves - 8 oz. mozzarella balls (ciliegine) - 12 slices prosciutto - Balsamic glaze, for drizzling

Directions: 1. Halve cantaloupe, then scoop out and discard seeds. Using a melon baller, scoop out 24 balls. 2. Assemble skewers: Layer cantaloupe, basil, mozzarella, prosciutto, and a second piece of cantaloupe until you have 12 skewers. 3. Drizzle skewers with balsamic glaze and serve immediately.

Chicken Teriyaki Pineapple Total time: 1 hour | Serves: 6 servings

Ingredients:

Cooking Instructions:

- 1 small pineapple

1. Make bowls: Slice pineapple in half, leaving the stem intact. Slice the fruit around the perimeters, angling your knife towards the middle, then make a few cuts across. Scoop chunks out with a spoon and reserve about 1 tablespoon of pineapple juice for sauce. Chop pineapple into smaller pieces to garnish (or snack on) later.

- 1/3 c. low-sodium soy sauce - 3 tbsp. packed brown sugar - 1 tbsp. pineapple juice - 3 cloves garlic, minced - 2 tsp. minced fresh ginger - 1 tsp. sesame oil - 1 tbsp. vegetable oil - 3/4 lb. boneless skinless chicken breast, chopped - 2 tsp. cornstarch - 2 tsp. water - 2 c. cooked rice, for serving - Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional) - Thinly sliced green onions, for garnish (optional)

2. Make sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, pineapple juice, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil. 3. Season chicken all over with salt. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat vegetable oil. Add chicken in an even layer and cook until golden, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook until golden on second side, about 3 minutes more. Pour sauce over chicken and bring mixture to a simmer. 4. Make slurry: Whisk together cornstarch and water, then stir into sauce. Simmer until sauce is thickened and chicken is cooked through, 8 to 10 minutes more. 5. Divide rice and chicken between bowls and garnish with chopped pineapple, sesame seeds and green onions, if using.

Individual Key Lime Pies Total: 2 hr 30 min | Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients: Lime Curd: - 1 cup lime juice - 2 cups sugar - 2 sticks unsalted butter - 14 eggs

Directions:

Crust Layer: - 1/3 cup sugar - 12 whole graham crackers - 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted Topping: - 1 1/2 cups whipping cream - 1/2 cup powdered sugar - Lime zest, for garnish

1. For the lime curd: Combine the lime juice, sugar and butter in a medium saucepan and cook on a low flame until the butter melts. Beat the eggs, add to the saucepan and stir until combined. Bring to a simmer. Stir constantly and cook until the mixture is a thick and creamy consistency, 5 to7 minutes. Pass through a mesh strainer. Chill for 2 hours in the fridge. 2. For the crust: Add the sugar and graham crackers to a food processor. Pour in the melted butter and pulse to combine. 3. For the topping: Whip the cream with the sugar until stiff. 4. Its name originates from Wickford in Essex, England. Remaining one of the biggest tourist attractions in Rhode Island, it is now home to various restaurants and boutiques. Notable restaurants in Wickford are Wickford on the Water, Tavern by the Sea, and Shayna’s Place. Although the food and shopping are a hit, the Wickford Art Festival is the pinnacle event of the summer that unites all Rhode Island residents.

The Wickford Art Festival is an annual event that began in 1962 by the Wickford Art Association. Various artists set up throughout the streets of Wickford, showcasing their work for potential buyers. This year, the festival was held on July 10-11 in a different location, Wilson Park. 180 different artists are showcased, their work varying from ceramics, to jewelry, glass, painting, photography, and so much more! This variety of artwork is a prime example of the artistic community within Rhode Island, as well as the diverse collection of work that meets in Wickford each year. Julia Broome has been in and out of the hospitality and event business throughout New England since her graduation from Boston University in 2009. But luckily for Providence, the restaurant that native daughter Broome always thought of as a retirement project came to fruition years earlier. When Covid-19 hit in March of 2020, Broome began working on a business plan for her southern comfort food restaurant. To keep motivation high while starting a restaurant during a pandemic, Broome reminded herself that her soulful and nostalgic food would fill a need in the local Providence community. She wanted to build a welcoming, inviting, and safe space for customers of all backgrounds to enjoy each other’s company alongside great food and cocktails. With the help of recipes passed down from her mother, who grew up in Virginia, Broome brought her vision to life. In early April 2021, Kin Southern Table & Bar, officially opened in downtown Providence for takeout and dining in. The menu of comfort food features fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese, candied sweet potatoes, and a slate of unique cocktails. Broome’s future plans for Kin include expanded outdoor dining, a potential Juneteenth celebration, and adding brunch to the menu.
