Williams and Stuart Real Estate | BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

With the school year coming to an sudden end for High School Seniors across the nation, students and their families are completely devastated. It is quite a disappointment for the Seniors who have lost their prom night, their sports banquets, their senior week and of course the graduation memories that they would have held on to forever. This milestone is something they have waited years for, and in the blink of an eye, its all canceled. Williams & Stuart Real Estate believes that being involved with and serving the community is a vital part of their mission as a small, locally owned business. They have been fortunate enough to work with several local charities, little league teams, and those in desperate need over the years. Hearing about the students who aren’t able to proudly walk in their cap and gown and celebrate the past four years of hard work and dedication is what sparked the idea to hold a video contest where a lucky entrant could win $1,000. While they can’t bring back the end of Senior year for the fellow high schoolers, they wanted to find a way to create a fun senior memory from home and offer a little extra money to help students get going on their educational goals. Williams & Stuart Real Estate hopes this scholarship can bring happiness and something to look forward to during this time of uncertainty. They want nothing more than to honor and recognize all the class of 2020. If you know of a graduating High School Senior, have them participate in this video contest!

Here is how you enter: • Create a 1-2 minute video answering the question “What does home mean to you?â€? and send it in via their Facebook page. • Make sure you are following Williams & Stuart on Facebook & Instagram

Yes, it is that easy! The rules are very simple: • Entrants must be a college-bound senior living in Rhode Island or nearby in Massachusetts or Connecticut • Your face and voice must be clear and easy to understand • The video must answer the question, “What does home mean to you?â€? • By submitting this video you give them permission to post it on their social media accounts

Video submissions end on 6/10/20. They will be selecting ONE lucky winner on 6/17/20.

Safety For Your Pet | BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Summer Safety For Your Pet! Beautiful weather means more time outside for you and your dog! It’s important to make sure your four-legged best friend is safe. Check out a few must-know tips:

Protect From Pests Ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests can harm both pet and owner. Protect your pup with the use of a medicated collar or pet-safe repellent.

Never Leave Your Dog Inside A Parked Car Never leave your dog in an unattended vehicle, even if it is just for a few minutes with the windows down! Heat exhaustion can be deadly. If your dog is showing any or a combination of the signs below contact a local vet like Diamond Hill Animal Clinic (401-658-0751) immediately. • Excessive panting or drooling • Discoloration on gums or tongue • Vomiting • Dizziness or lethargic behavior

Beach Trips With Your Dog The beach is a great place to let your dog play! Make sure your beach permits pets and keep them on a leash if they are not fully commandtrained. While you are there, be mindful of the sun. Did you know that dogs can get sunburns too? If a dog has a thin or light-colored coat they can easily burn. Ask your vet to recommend pet safe sunscreen.

Pool PAWty! Always have fresh water available to your dog to prevent dehydration. Even better, give them their very own pool! So they have a place to cool off and drink all summer long. Wishing you and your dog a beautiful and fun summer in Rhode Island! BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

2 (3.4 oz) packages Vanilla Instant Pudding 2-1/2 cups cold milk

12 oz Cool whip (or homemade whipped cream) 3 cups fresh strawberries, sliced 1-1/2 cups fresh blueberries 2 oz white chocolate chips

Instructions: Beat cream cheese and dry pudding mixes in large bowl with mixer until blended. Gradually beat in milk. Gently stir in Cool Whip or homemade whipped cream, reserving ½ cup. Spread a thin layer of cool whip in a 9x13 pan just to coat the bottom. Layer 5 graham crackers across the center of the pan, then 2 more, breaking them as needed to fit around the top and bottom edges. Spread a layer of pudding mixture over grahams and top with a layer of blueberries and sliced strawberries. Place graham crackers on top of berries, then pudding mixture, then layer of berries again. Repeat the graham-pudding-berries layers 1 more time (3 times total) and you should reach the top of the pan. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight until the graham crackers have softened completely. When ready to serve, melt white chocolate chips in a bowl as directed on package and drizzle over dessert. You can use a spoon to drizzle it over the tops of the berries or you can put it into a small zip-top bag and snip of the corner for an easy “piping bag.” Enjoy!

Becky Killian, an artist and educator, enjoys leading paint parties, painting murals and writing books. She is proud of being an eighth generation Newport resident with long standing ties to the island’s history. Her great, great, great grandfather was the lighthouse keeper at the Castle Hill Lighthouse and her grandparents were established artists in Newport. Her mom is a nurse at Newport Hospital. She graduated from Rogers High School in 2000. After a brief stint leading painting parties for a major corporation, Becky founded Mermaid Masterpieces, her Newport based company specializing in paint parties for children and adults. She also enjoys painting the summer mural on the window of the Newport Public Library to support the summer’s reading program for students. Becky began this initiative to honor her grandfather who was very involved with the library. This summer’s window painting will be her sixth. The theme will be fairy tales. (The mural may be viewed from either the inside or the outside of the children’s section of the library from June to September each year.) Becky’s paint parties are offered at libraries throughout Rhode Island, as well as for businesses, not-for-profit fundraisers, schools, youth groups and social events everywhere. She even offers an online version of her parties for people who cannot leave their homes. Her work has been recognized with Best of Newport awards for: • Best Date Night (2020) • Best Family Night (2020) • Best Kept Secret (2017, Becky is pleased she no

longer qualifies for this one!) Best Girl’s Night by Best of Rhode Island.

Her first book, Meet Little Bexda, is all about a Newport Mermaid. Her second book will be published shortly. Becky offers the following suggestions: • If you are starting a business be sure your business name is memorable and easy to spell. • Be nice! Uphold your reputation. Treat everyone as if they are the most important person in your life. • Remember, your art will be complete when you are happy with it. Don’t give up. • Start new hobbies with minimal supplies and equipment and build up over time. To begin painting all you need is two brushes – a wide one and a narrow one, two canvases, and a palate of varying paint colors. • Schedule a paint party for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, bachelorette celebrations as well as corporate teambuilding events and fundraisers. If your event is honoring someone, you might include them in the planning of the party or you may make it a complete surprise! • Smile and enjoy life!!! Shop Local Rhody readers are encouraged to message Becky via her FaceBook Page at MermaidMasterpieces. Fun to schedule a paint party, order a book, order a box of artist supplies for a gift or have your business or home window painted for a special occasion. Luckily, you don’t have to travel far to experience beautiful scenery - you can enjoy these great hikes right here in Little Rhody!

Arcadia Management Area

George B. Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge

Richmond, RI

Coventry, RI

With over 14,000 acres of forested land in Richmond, Exeter, Hopkinton, and West Greenwich, this stunning recreation area has miles and miles of trails to explore. Offering both gravel roads and well-marked wooded trails, it’s easy to find the right trail no matter what type of experience you are looking for. RI’s largest recreational area covers enough ground to keep hikers coming back to explore more and more of the beautifully-wooded terrain. While the park is shared by hikers, hunters, fishermen, mountain bikers, horseback riders, campers, and boaters alike, multi-use safety regulations are in place to keep the experience safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Managed by the Audobon Society of Rhode Island, the George B. Parker Wildlife Refuge is a great place for birdwatching and possibly catching a glimpse of foxes, mink, deer, and other wildlife. While this 860-acre property may be smaller than some of the others on our list, it offers 7 miles of trails ranging from boardwalks over streams and brooks to Revolutionary War-era carriage roads and rocky trails through hilly terrain.

Burlingame State Park Charlestown, RI Burlingame State Park offers beautiful trails and hiking around Charlestown’s Watchaug Pond. With 3,100 acres of rocky woodland, there is so much to explore that you may want to stay for a few days. Luckily enough, Burlingame State Park also features 20 rustic cabins and almost 700 standard campsites that you can rent out. While the campsites are closed until at least June 15, 2020, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, this site’s opening date is worth keeping an eye on.

Long Pond Woods Wildlife Refuge Hopkinton, RI If you’re looking for a more challenging trail with beautiful views, you will love Long Pond Woods Trail. While it is the smallest destination on our list with 2 miles of trails through 220 acres of land, it offers lots of steep, heavily-wooded, and rocky terrain leading to a breathtaking view of Long Pond. If you keep a close eye on the water below, you may even see an otter!

Now is the time to provide support to businesses who need it the most. Although the seating arrangement may be a little different, the food is still delicious! Article by Cassandra Remillard

With the recent changes to the lockdown regulations in Rhode Island, locals are now able to get out of the house and enjoy outdoor dining in the Ocean State! Now is the time to provide support to businesses who need it the most. Although the seating arrangement may be a little different, the food is still delicious! Here are just a few of our favorite places to visit:

BLU On The Water | East Greenwich For waterfront dining on Greenwich Bay, it’s hard to beat BLU On The Water. With fresh, local seafood delivered daily, a variety of non-seafood options, and lots of delicious cocktails, it’s hard to leave BLU feeling blue! Not only does BLU On The Water offer a great dining experience, but the atmosphere is fantastic. They have deck seating sitting right on a bustling martina as well as glass fire pits, tornado torches and of course, amazing views!

Matunuck Oyster Bar | South Kingstown This Rhode Island classic takes the phrase “from farm to table” to another level, offering “pond to plate dining.” Matunuck Oyster Bar grows its very own oysters in Potter Pond right in front of their waterfront patio! Many of the vegetables and herbs they serve are grown in

their own vegetable garden as well. These efforts to serve locally-sourced and incredibly-fresh foods create an amazing dining experience with fantastic food. Their raw bar is one of the most famous in Rhode Island. If you are looking for a dining experience with exceptional service and incredible food, consider this!

Coast Guard House | Narragansett This beautiful stone building serves up more than just scenic views of Narragansett Bay but offers incredible dining and service. After a recent refresh due to Super Storm Sandy, this popular Rhode Island destination has added an updated and upscale look while still honoring the building’s history that dates back to the 1800s. For locally harvested seafood cooked to perfection paired with an outstanding overall experience, the Coast Guard House is a great choice for your next big night out.

Chelo’s Waterfront Bar & Grille | Warwick Chelo’s Waterfront offers great food and waterfront views at affordable prices. Chelo’s is famous for its chowder and desserts and it’s a great place to take the whole family. They often feature live entertainment on the weekends! Offering a raw bar and a good selection of seafood, Chelo’s waterfront is a great place to go for a more affordable waterfront dining experience.

Old Brick School House 21 Meeting Street, Providence, Rhode Island The growing idea of promoting education to all in support of a free society was at the heart of this old brick schoolhouse. This building was completed in 1769 by John Smith and embodies a special kind of significance in the history of Providence. By 1800, this became one of the earliest public education systems. Prior to the Old Brick School House being built, it was very common for families to home school their children

or send them to private school. The School House is a representation of the struggles fought and faced by many residents of the area to create a new public school structure within a new and independent society. Since its construction, the building has been used in many forms; as an arsenal during the Revolutionary War, a grammar school, a classroom space for Brown University, the first school for African American children supported by the city of Providence, a sewing and cooking school, a school for tubercular children, a school for children with disabilities, and today it is the office of the Providence Preservation Society. The variety of roles that this building has served is what makes it extra special. The building is full of history and had been restored beautifully from the outside in. The Providence Preservation Society now owns it and took care of restoring it. You will find it standing tall with its gorgeous woodwork dated back to the 1700s. The front double staircase has also remained the same! There is so much beauty inside and it is by far one of the most important structures of Providence history. Next time you are in Providence, be sure to drive by!

Rhode Island Rocks Rhode Island Rocks are irresistable chocolate candies with pretzels, raisins and peanuts. Brother and sister duo, Tom and Lucia Asprinio have taken an old family recipe and have made this delicious confection available from their family to yours. Created by Tesoro Confectioners Inc., its distinctive and unusual shape lends itself to the name Rocks, as well as promoting the Ocean State. Lucia has been making these delightful candies for as long as she can remember. For years people told her to sell her candy but she emphatically said no. Her dedication was to her family, making all her delicious recipes from main courses to desserts and sharing them. Being Italian it is only natural that most everything revolves around food. Her children agree that nothing compares to their mother’s cooking. One taste and you will be hooked, as they have heard so often...“what’s not to like.” www.rirocks.com | (401) 207-4442

Newport Sea Salt Co.

Orange Cat Candle Co. Samantha Lebeau started making candles in her kitchen in 2015. As she improved her craft, she decided she needed a name for her company. Around that time, Samantha adopted a very handsome feral cat from the streets of Providence, RI. They decided to become partners; she’d make the candles and he’d sell them with that handsome face! Her cat, Mr. Field, is the inspiration for her craft. Her candles are hand poured, clean burning soy wax and hemp wicks, they contain no nasty chemicals, and have a longer burn time than average candles. They come in a variety of scents including Cinnamon Bun, Clean Cotton, Maple Walnut, Meyer Lemon, White Jasmine & Mint and many more! Check out all the scents on her website! www.orangecatcandleco.com | (401) 688-9181

This veteran owned artisanal sea salt company follows the traditional and unhurried process of crafting 100% pure and natural sea salt. After serving our country for twenty years as a U.S. Naval Officer, Matthew Mullins, had the desire to stay connected to the sea. Mullins sources the sea water from Newport’s Brenton Reef, a rocky coast with an abundance of shellfish naturally filtering the water makes this the ideal harvesting location. His desire is to pass along the very best all-natural sea salt, free of anti-caking agents and bleaches. Newport Sea Salt is real and unprocessed, it has a wonderful briny taste, and a delicately crunchy texture. Regardless if you’re a seasoned restaurant chef or a kitchen weekend warrior, our Reef to Table sea salt will enhance the flavor of any dish! www.newportseasaltco.com | (401) 479-0041

A beloved business in Newport is taking advantage of an exciting opportunity to expand to an additional location— and the RI Small Business Development Center (RISBDC) played an important role in making it happen. The Bodhi Spa had already built an excellent reputation among their customers, employees, and community and had been recognized by the Newport County Chamber of Commerce and the Love Awards, among others, as an outstanding business. Recognizing the demand for quality spa services, the team at Bodhi came to the RISBDC for help putting together a loan package to open a second location. In their words, “The resources were amazing to assist with putting business projections together that helped us present our best foot forward to lenders.” And it worked. The team was able to secure an SBA loan to fund their new location—coming soon to Providence! Now, Bodhi is poised to expand their geographic reach in the state and the region, offering a variety of services from hot mineral baths and infrared sauna to traditional massage and body treatments, and to further their mission to offer a rejuvenating health experience. From hydrotherapy to aromatherapy steams to an array of facials and body treatments, The Bodhi Spa provides its customers with a full menu of choices designed to enhance a feeling of wellness. The spa’s signature “Water Journey,” which incorporates “hot

and cold water experiences designed to detoxify the body,” is very popular among its loyal clientele. While the business has been temporarily closed as required during the COVID-19 crisis, owners Harmony and Jamie Oschefski and Cedar and Daniel Hwang have been able to access both the EIDL and PPP programs so that they can take care of their team of employees and create a safe and successful reopening plan. Stay tuned as The Bodhi Spa prepares to welcome back existing and new customers who are in need of some pampering. To learn more about The Bodhi Spa, visit their website at TheBodhiSpa.com. If you’re ready to start writing your business success story, attend one of our upcoming workshops or set up a free oneon-one counseling session. Register at RISBDC.org today. The Rhode Island Small Business Development Center at URI is part of a national network of nearly 1,000 business assistance centers that provide counseling and training to small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. Partially funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, we help businesses to succeed from start-up to maturity. Josh Daly is the Southern RI Regional Director of the Rhode Island Small Business Development Center.
