How You Can Reduce the Risk of Spreading Viruses While the situation surrounding the COVID-19 epidemic may feel like it is constantly changing, these tips from the World Health Organization (WHO) are useful for preventing a wide variety of illnesses.

Keep Those Hands Clean Frequently washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers can kill viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain Social Distancing & Greet Each Other Differently The WHO recommends staying at least 3 feet away from someone who is coughing or sneezing but to be safe, we recommend staying 6 feet away from others in public places. That also means that high fives and handshakes with friends and colleagues are not recommended, especially if a wave will do the trick.

Avoid Touching Eyes, Nose, and Mouth Your hands come in contact with so many different surfaces that could carry viruses or bacteria and touching your eyes, nose, or mouth gives them easy access into your body where they can spread and make you sick.

Cover Your Cough or Sneeze! COVID-19 and other illnesses can be spread through water droplets. When you cough or sneeze, you spray water droplets and mucus everywhere. Whether you’re sick or not, you should always cover your cough or sneeze with your bent elbow or a tissue.

Consult a Medical Professional Early According to the WHO, you should “Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.” Situations are constantly changing and your local health authorities have the most up-to-date information available.

Whether it’s coronavirus-related or not, staying home when sick is recommended to prevent the spread of any illness and you should always consult a doctor if you believe you have a serious medical condition. BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL | Spruce Up Your Yard For The Warmer Weather

Spruce Up Your Yard for the Warmer Weather! As the outside finally begins to turn green and beautiful after a long, hard winter, it is more important than ever to pay attention to cleaning up your lawn and landscape. Doing your spring yard preparation now will go a long way towards ensuring that you have a beautiful lawn for summertime!

Lawn This is the first place you should start your spring cleanup. If heavy traffic and your pets have ruined your lawn, sprinkle soil over the area with a combination of grass seed and fertilizer. Make sure to keep the dirt moist until you see grass start to sprout. Clean up any debris that is laying around your yard. Remove sticks that have fallen over the winter and rake up leaves and thatch build-up so your grass can breathe again. Remember not to rake into wet grounds, it could tear apart the grass!

Garden Beds There is no better time than now to add some color to your landscape. Remember that your flowers need room to grow, so clear your garden beds of any leaves, dead foliage, and invasive weeds before the warmer months arrive. Once you fix up the old flowers and plant some new ones, edge the beds and add a fresh batch of mulch... it makes all the difference.

Patio & Walkways Trees, Shrubs, & Perennials Give all of your plants the ability to grow by clipping away any dead or dying branches. While you’re at it, trim back any branches that are invading your walkways. Not only will this make your yard more inviting, but it will also allow more sun and air to reach the trees and shrubs!

10

BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Before you take advantage of your beautiful outdoor space, it’s important to make sure it is ready for your first party. If your patio and walkways don’t look their best, pressure wash the mildew and grime away and then replace any broken pavers or stones. Now your yard is officially ready to meet the warmer weather!

6 thin slices of white bread 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter

Michelle Lee Photography RI

Make a statement without saying a word!

Salt & Pepper 3 tablespoons of whole milk 10 large eggs

4 slices bacon, cut into 1/2 inch pieces 4 slices of American cheese, chopped Hot Sauce of choice

Cooking Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Roll each piece of bread to flatten. 3. Microwave butter with a pinch of salt until melted. Brush both sides of each slice of bread with butter. 4. Gently press a slice of bread inside a cup of a muffin tin. The bottom and sides of bread should be flush against the cup; pleat the sides of the bread as needed to fit. Fill every other muffin cup so that the bread bowls don’t touch. Bake, rotating about halfway through, until lightly browned and crispy, 12-15 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, whisk together the milk, eggs, salt and pepper into bowl. 6. Put bacon in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook until crispy, 12-15 minutes. Keep the bacon drippings in the skillet and adjust heat to low. 7. Pour the egg mixture into the skillet, and stir as needed, until small curds form, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and fold in the cheese. 8. Divide the hot eggs among the toast bowls and top with crispy bacon. Serve with hot sauce! Enjoy!

Gloria Kostadinova and Robert Elias are the proud owners of Properly Worn, the only men’s consignment shop in Southern New England. Robert and Gloria both grew up in East Greenwich, though it wasn’t until 2012 that they met while working in neighboring restaurants on Main Street. Upon graduating college with degrees in English they went on to careers in Washington DC. They returned to Rhode Island to be closer to family and for Gloria to pursue her master’s degree at URI in Environmental Science and Management with a focus on science communications. In 2018 the couple married and decided to fulfill a dream of opening a business together, one that combined Robert’s expertise in hospitality and Gloria’s passion for environmental sustainability. They found that a men’s only consignment shop was a missing niche in New England, and when the right storefront became available, they seized the opportunity to open Properly Worn, which officially opened its doors in November 2019. The husband - wife team offers the following tips to gentlemen looking for a new avenue to shop: • Shop local. You will receive expert advice from knowledgeable professionals. • Shop sustainably. It is good for the environment and affords you great value.

Properly

• Learn about the consignment process. It’s an easy and sustainable way to make some extra money. • Less is more. Invest in a few high-quality items rather than large quantities of “fast fashion.” • Be more adventurous. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Robert and Gloria are pleased to offer suggestions on how to look your personal best wearing quality clothing, as well as how to consign clothing. They may be contacted by email (ProperlyWorn@GMail.Com), telephone (401.203.6482) or their website (www.ProperlyWorn.com). You are also welcome to visit their shop at 581 Main Street in East Greenwich, RI (normal business hours for sales are 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM Wednesday to Sunday or by appointment) or shop online at www.ProperlyWorn.Com/Shop and enjoy flat-rate shipping and free in-store pickup. Gloria and Robert also welcome you to follow their Facebook page and Instagram (@ProperlyWorn) to see new items and clothing inspiration featured daily. Individuals wishing to consign clothing should call or email to set up an appointment. I would like to thank Industrial Consultant Dr. Margarita Posada Cossuto for helpful comments. Safe Road Services | BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Coming to a Road Near You Safe Road Services is a New England company that is making a difference for the environment You’ve probably noticed the incredible amount of road salt it takes for Rhode Islanders to get through icy winters without sliding into accidents. From November through March, it seems like the salt is everywhere. It coats your shoes. It covers your car. It can even makes its way into your home. While it may be annoying, it is a necessity for keeping drivers safe. Kevin Barrett, founder of Safe Road Services

Unfortunately, the heavy use of road salt is more than just an inconvenience from an environmental perspective. It can be downright dangerous as chloride ions from salt can impact soil, vegetation,

“But Safe Road Services doesn’t only help the environment in the winter as the company also produces Safe Bind, an environmentally-friendly road stabilizer that prevents erosion and other deterioration of dirt and gravel roads.” aquatic life, wildlife, pets, and humans according to theNew Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. It can even erode infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and expensive equipment. That’s where Kevin Barrett, founder of Safe Road Services, is hoping to make a big impact. Using calcium chloride and a forestry byproduct of the paper-pulping process called lignin, he developed Safe Melt.

While it may not make for an appetizing meal, it provides public works departments with a great alternative to traditional ice melters, allowing them to use 33-50% less salt and sand. But Safe Road Services doesn’t only help the environment in the winter as the company also produces Safe Bind, an environmentally-friendly road stabilizer that prevents erosion and other deterioration of dirt and gravel roads. Using lignin’s natural adhesive properties, Safe Bind packs the fine particles in these roads closer together to form a stronger surface. This leads to less grading and raking for public works departments, saving them time and money while cutting back on carbon emissions due to fewer hours spent running equipment. On top of that, Safe Bind is significantly less corrosive than calcium chloride or magnesium chloride brines. In fact, it is less corrosive than water! The product’s highly-organic formula is approved by the U.S. Forest Service Administration and General Service Administration as well as local and regional government agencies. If you would like to learn more about the road maintenance product company that is making a difference, visit saferoadservices.com.

Safe Melt is a de-icing product that can be used to reduce the amount of harmful chloride ions introduced to the environment from road salt by as much as 50%. It passes some of the toughest environmental safety tests in the country and is even safe enough to eat as demonstrated on WGME CBS News in Portland, Maine.

STEP INTO

THE OUTDOORS WITH THE

RIGHT HIKING SHOE When trying any new activity, it’s easy to get ahead of yourself and hiking is no different! Spring has sprung and for many people, the great outdoors are calling. After spending so much time inside, tons of hikers will be hitting the trails for a little fresh air. But with rocky terrain and uneven surfaces comes the potential for foot and ankle injuries. The first step towards preventing these injuries is making sure you wear the right shoes. That’s why we created this handy guide to choosing the right hiking boots for you.

Don’t Overdo the Shoe!

Materials matter

With so many options to choose from, it’s easy to pick the wrong type of shoe for the job! These tips from REI.com will get you started in the right direction.

For hiking shoes and boots, different materials offer different benefits. These tips from Active.com will help you make the right choice.

Trail running shoes or supportive sneakers are perfectly fine for short and simple hikes with even terrain and smooth trails.

Synthetics are often light and breathable but less durable than other materials. They dry quickly when they’re wet, but they’re not very water-resistant.

Low-cut hiking shoes with a flexible mid-sole are the perfect fit for day trips with light packs or no packs at all. They are a good choice when dealing with moderate rockiness and uneven terrain.

Split-Grain Leather boots and shoes are a good middle ground as they are partially made of leather and partially made of synthetic materials. Split-grain leather boots are often more durable than synthetic shoes but less breathable. At the same time, these boots are often more breathable than full-grain leather but less durable.

Day hiking boots offer more support than low cut shoes to deal with unstable ground and rougher terrain. If you plan on carrying a lighter backpack and going for a day trip, these are likely the best shoe for you. Backpacking boots are the way to go if you plan on hiking with a heavy load on a multi-day trip into the wilderness.

Full-grain leather boots are typically the most durable and the most waterproof. However, they are often less breathable and heavier.

Remember that accidents can still happen - even if you’re wearing the perfect shoes. If you find yourself with an injured ankle after slipping while hiking, you need to consult the experts! The Foot & Ankle Institute of New England is here to mend injuries across all of Rhode Island- there’s nothing below the knee they can’t handle! For more information on their services call (401) 738-7750 or visit newenglandfoot.com.

Dave Conner, an executive chef by trade and alumni of Johnson and Wales University, came to Rhode Island following his passion for cooking. Together with Katie Evans the two have been working tirelessly to gain traction with their web-based store, and most recently have been coordinating with local boutique vendors, as well as working hand-in-hand with local restaurateurs, spreading our love of food, cooking, and spices throughout the Ocean State. Dave is now full-time pepper...and you will be seeing a lot of him every week at numerous Farmer’s Markets throughout Mass, Connecticut, and of course, Lil’ Rhody. www.rhodypepper.com | (401) 316-7096

Bio-One Providence

NEW BUSINESS ON THE FRONT LINES OF COVID-19 Article by Amit Basnet

Rhode Island native Zachary Mattera recently opened the state’s first Bio-One Inc. franchise. Bio-One provides decontamination and biohazard cleanup services while treating clients with privacy and compassion, which difficult moments demand. This newest location serves Providence and surrounding areas. Mattera studied Criminal Justice at Norwich University. His years of experience and expertise are exhibited when he and his team help in restoring their client’s properties to their original condition in a professional, discreet, and compassionate manner. Mattera chose to start Bio-One to become more involved in serving his community and help families during times of need. “I decided to bring this business to Rhode Island because I wanted to help people. I felt that cleaning up someone’s home, or disinfecting a school was rewarding and could benefit the community,” said Mattera. Prior to launching, Mattera reached out to the Rhode Island Small Business Development Center for assistance with business development. He credits the RISBDC for helping him “get moving” and narrowing his focus in areas of marketing. “I think the help with marketing my business was a big step for me,” said Mattera. Both Amit Basnet, RISBDC Central Regional Director, and Julie Loffredi, RISBDC Marketing Counselor, provided assistance including press outreach and guidance with new business promotion. Within the first few weeks of business, Mattera started getting calls for service. Due to the new coronavirus

pandemic, Mattera said he is also shifting his focus and providing assistance to local towns and cities to help disinfect their buildings. Bio-One Inc. uses the TOMI SteraMist Environment System. According to Mattera, it uses binary ionization technology to kill viruses and bacteria. This system is what hospitals use to disinfect large sections at a time, and is one of the only machines to reach a six log reduction of germs (99.9999%). “I am interested in connecting with as many businesses as possible with a focus on police departments, fire departments, and apartment communities. I am also interested in connecting with hospitals and other large buildings so we can help with disinfection efforts,” said Mattera. The 40 Steps 199 narraganset t avenue, new port, Rhode Island The 40 steps is a beautiful landmark that is located right near the famous Newport Cliff Walk (at the east end of Narragansett Ave). This used to be one of the most popular hang out spots for the servants that worked at all of the Newport mansions during the Gilded Age. The story of what are known as the 40 Steps, just off the east end of Narragansett Avenue, is one story of Cliff Walk in miniature. As Newport was being gobbled up as a resort

town for the super-wealthy, access to some of the most arresting shoreline in New England was still open to people who weren’t named Astor and Vanderbilt. Sure there were mansions like The Breakers and Ochre Court dominating the land high atop the cliffs, but their cooks, maids, butlers, chauffeurs and gardeners created their own piece of the seaside playground. Although the servants did not have much time off from work, they enjoyed themselves as much as they possibly could when they were given time off. They came down to The 40 Steps to dance, listen to music and take in the breathtaking views. The 40 Steps was built in the early 1800’s, and was restored in the 1990’s, making them safer for more attractive for people to visit and take photos. The steps are made out of granite and were able to be restored due to donors who spent $3,000 each for their step. Newport is one of the greatest destinations to visit, whether you are a Rhode Island resident or not. This is just one of the many waterfront spots that you should make a trip to when in Newport! If you are looking for a gorgeous place to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean, there are not many as beautiful as this one. Remember to bring your camera! The 40 Steps is open daily from dawn to dusk.

From the moment you step inside any of their locations, you feel so welcomed and appreciated. The service is unlike the rest, and the employees are happy to be there. Article by Sarah Day

If you ask Steve Filippou, owner of Rhode Island’s Twisted Pizzeria and Restaurant, what makes his business different from the rest, with no hesitation, he says “our team.” Especially over the past couple of months, his dedicated and tireless team is has been the backbone of his business through these unexpected and troubling times. No business is ever prepared enough for a tragedy like COVID-19, but Twisted Pizza has been able to fight through with the help of their dedicated staff. Twisted Pizzeria and Restaurant is a family-run business with 6 locations throughout the Ocean State. They pride themselves on preparing a memorable dining experience for every customer they serve with their fresh ingredients, large menu, and courteous employees. They serve a variety of items such as pizzas, pastas, salads, sandwiches and seafood dishes. They even have some of the most incredible appetizers, like their buffalo chicken wings and calamari. It is the perfect spot to grab a refreshing beer and tasty dinner for a very reasonable price. But the reason for Twisted Pizzeria and Restaurant’s success over the years has been from one of its greatest assets - the staff. From the moment you step inside any of their locations, you feel so welcomed and appreciated. The service is unlike the rest, and the employees are happy to be there. This has not changed a bit, even though it has been a crazy couple of months. The staff has been on top of their game in every way possible, arriving early, working long hours and keeping a smile on their face

from the beginning to the end of their shift. From the crew in the back making the pizzas, to the employees answering the endless phone calls and delivering the meals, their work ethic has been tremendous. “I am so thankful for their hard work and for pulling through and not bailing ship during these tough times,” Filippou said. Not only is Fillipou thankful for his hardworking employees, he is also appreciative of his distributors. Over the past couple of weeks, there have been numerous food shortages and shipping has been delayed, but the distributors have stood by them and made sure they had the products they needed to stay in business and serve their customers. When the restaurant industry experienced an immense decline and had no option than to go completely contactless, it was difficult to tell how it would affect their business. Steve Fillipou cannot express his gratitude for the amazing customers and their constant support. “They have stood behind us from the very beginning and their support has meant the world to us,” he said. “From the shout outs on social media to the generous tips, they have been incredible.” Their support is fully recognized and Twisted Pizza is so grateful for a caring community. If you would like to order from Twisted Pizzeria and Restaurant, visit gettwistedpizza.com or call one of their 6 locations. They are open for business and ready to serve you a delicious meal!

RHODE ISLAND ON THE BRAIN meets monthly in Providence. Support is provided in a casual, relaxed setting to brain and spine tumor patients, their loved ones and caregivers. On occasion, we may have a guest speaker who may be able to provide helpful information and discuss new topics which may range from new treatments to estate planning.

Dr. Prakash Sampath, MD

Rhode Island Brain and Spine Tumor Foundation was established in February 2008 by Dr. Prakash Sampath, MD, FAANS of the RI Neurosurgical Institute. This was his response to address the concern of Rhode Island patients and their families when they receive the diagnosis of a potential brain or spine tumor. The mission of the Rhode Island Brain and Spine Tumor Foundation (RIBSTF) is to provide comprehensive support to those individuals, and families and to enhance their quality of life by providing education, spiritual and financial support, as well as to assist those who conduct research and wish to study in this field. The Rhode Island Brain and Spine Tumor Foundation collaborates with other local and national foundations that serve similar missions. Our purpose is 100% charitable. The RIBSTF achieves its mission with support received through many different avenues. A complimentary support group that is led by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker

“Our goal continues to be to support those who are afflicted with brain and spine tumors and to assist them through the most difficult of times with heartfelt compassion while we continue to raise awareness.” RIBSTF also has hosted an “Ask The Experts” event. The panel consists of several physicians and professionals from the community which represent a comprehensive team that a patient and their family would encounter throughout their treatment. RIBSTF also hosts several fundraising events throughout the year. Our events this year are being significantly impacted due to the Worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. The RIBSTF continues to provide support to those in need and will continue to plan

and execute fundraising events such as our annual Gala “Faces of Hope”. RIBSTF will be hosting several events to include all age groups and raise awareness. As many foundations and organizations do, RIBSTF also engages the community as well as small and large businesses alike to support our mission. The businesses and residents of Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts continue to be extremely generous by providing financial support for our fundraisers, as well as material items that are utilized for silent auctions and raffles. As the RIBSTF continues to move forward and grow, we set new goals and strive to achieve them. Last years’ goal was to launch the Dr. Scott Wang Patient Assistance Fund. With 12 years of service to the Rhode Island community, the RIBSTF has proudly assisted patients. Our goal continues to be to support those who are afflicted with brain and spine tumors and to assist them through the most difficult of times with heartfelt compassion while we continue to raise awareness. If you or someone you know may be interested in the services provided by the RIBSTF or would like more information about how you can help, please contact us at 401-272-4177 or visit our website at www.ribstf.org. If you would like to contribute to our foundation, checks should be made payable to: RIBSTF and mailed to RIBSTF, 118 Dudley Street, Providence RI 02905 Lisa A.
