by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro Ali Tedeschi is a professional organizer who specializes in helping people achieve peace of mind in the spaces they live in. She works projects as narrow as organizing a closet or drawers, to a room, to an entire house. In April 2019, after spending 24 years as a graphic designer in different settings; newspaper, freelance, and for a major RI corporation, Ali decided to pursue her lifetime passion—organizing. Her experience dates back to childhoodorganizing and rearranging her room! She really enjoys helping her clients, seeing how much happier they are with an organized home, as well as the freedom, flexibility, and family time with her husband, two sons, two dogs and two cats which come from owning her own business. One of her favorite projects was recently helping a family move into their new home. She supported the entire move-in project from purchasing organizers, bins, etc. to sorting items and putting them away based on how the family plans to function in the home. Ali does not just come in and organize for you, she teams with her clients, creating a custom system for their particular lifestyle. She then shows them how they can continue to maintain the organization after she leaves. Ali, a lifelong Rhode Island resident, currently resides in Greenville. She prefers to work with her Rhode Island clients in person, but is also pleased to work remotely when that is best for her clients. Ali also prepares plans and instructions for people who prefer to do-it-themselves. Ali offers group workshops on focus areas such as organizing drawers or closets. People would typically participate in the

Organize to Save Time and Money

online workshops once a week for 3 weeks, doing organizing in between and reporting back to the group with progress including photos, questions, etc.

Ali shared these ideas to keep your home organized: • • • • •

Get in the habit of purging on a regular basis either once per year, twice per year or seasonally. Be realistic about your space and what you can own. Everything you own should have a home. Don’t put things down on the counter, the tabletop, the stairs or the floor. Put them away. If you know what you have you will save time finding things and save money not buying the same item multiple times. Don’t feel guilty about passing items on to others through resale or donations. Discard items which are damaged or no longer usable. If entering a room, closet or other space causes anxiety hire a professional to help you to organize it. Partnering with someone greatly increases your follow-thru and success rate.

Shop Local Rhody readers are encouraged to refer to Ali’s website (HOMEbyAli.com) and FaceBook page (H.O.M.E.byAliT). She welcomes calls (401.864.2673) and emails (HOMEbyAli@gmail.com) for questions about organizing and/or to schedule an initial consultation. I would like to thank Industrial Consultant Dr. Margarita Posada Cossuto for helpful comments.

Far from two triangles eyes cut out with a kitchen knife, my unique pumpkins turn heads on spectators of all ages. Article by Cassandra Remillard

What do you get when you combine a passion for Halloween and sculpture? 3D pumpkin carvings! Since childhood, I have loved all things Halloween: the costumes, the movies, and especially carving the annual Jack-O-Lantern. While studying sculpture at UMass Dartmouth in 2014 I decided to take my figure modeling experience to a new medium, using my great grandfather’s wood carving gouges, I sculpted my first 3D pumpkin. Since then I have carved over a dozen pumpkins each season. After a while, I noticed myself getting better and pulling more personality from the pumpkin each time! Over the years, I have had the opportunity to showcase my carving skills to 1000s of people! Some of my career highlights were displaying at Rhode Island’s own “Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular” at Roger Williams Park Zoo, and demoing for “Rise of the Jack-O-Lanterns” in Boston and on Governor’s Island in NYC. Most weekends in October, you can find me carving at local farms across New England. Far from two triangles eyes cut out with a kitchen knife, my unique pumpkins turn heads on spectators

of all ages. People who see my pumpkins often wonder where I get the inspiration for some of the wacky faces I carve. Now the secret’s out! I always keep a mirror close by when working on a pumpkin. I’ll make a ridiculous face in the mirror and then mimic it in the carving. There truly is a piece of me that goes into each and every carve. One of my favorite parts about working with pumpkins as my medium is the short life of my creations. After I complete a crave I will document it through photos then let mother nature take over. I’ve found squirrels are huge fans of my work! Each year brings the opportunity for bigger and better carves... If you’re reading this thinking you could never make something like that, you are wrong! With a few simple tools and enough practice you too can carve 3D pumpkins! Grab your friends, book a private class for up to 10 people, and see what you’re capable of. To book a carving class, carving demonstration, or view more photos please visit....

Rustic Drive-In 1 1 9 5 Ed d i e D o w ling H w y , No r t h S mi t hf i e ld , R ho de Is l and Built in 1951, the Rustic and drive-in theaters were in their heyday. In 1958 there were 4,063 of them nationwide. Now, there are only a little more than 400. The flat land that drive-in theaters sat on was perfect for countless malls and the acres of parking they required. Today, only the Rustic is left in Rhode Island, while four remain in Massachusetts, the nearest being the Mendon Twin, just north of the Rhode Island line. During the “golden age of the automobile, drive-in theatres and other car-oriented concepts were everywhere. Diners had car-hops to bring food out to the car, some churches fleetingly experimented with the drive-in idea, and local

tourist traps sprouted up along major thoroughfares to get people out of their cars and into shops to spend money. Rt 146 was one of these roads, especially before the interstate highway (Rt 95) was completed in 1969. After hitting hard times during the 60s and 70s, Beverly and Clem Desmarais bought the Rustic Drive-In in 1986 and evolved it to a seasonal, family-oriented theater. They installed two additional screens, allowing for an increased capacity of people and a wider variety of movie selections. Their daughter Beth took over the family business, after their passing in 2001, and introduced the bargain of double features to draw in customers. After twenty-two years of reviving the drive-in experience, the Desmarais family sold the Rustic Drive-In to the Boston Culinary Group. This privately owned food service company not only provided delicious movie snacks, but also fully managed and operated all aspects of the theaters. The Rustic is the last running Drive-In in the state of Rhode Island. The theater opens between the months of late April and late October, showing three double features options! Grab your popcorn and enjoy a cinematic experience from the comfort of your car!

Rhed’s Hot Sauce Owner & Pepper Head Deja Hart came to love hot sauce while growing up in Southern California. Her true love of hot peppers began when she became the executive chef at a boutique Thai and Indonesian fusion restaurant in Manhattan Beach California where she worked with two wonderful Thai ladies. Upon moving to Rhode Island, Deja’s red headed husband Karsten (hence “Rhed’s) started a pepper garden in their backyard. Each year, the pepper varieties that they planted became more unique, thus spurring on Deja’s goal to create the most flavorful, well balanced hot sauces. Made with peppers and vegetables sourced seasonally from local Rhode Island Farms including: Brandon Family Farm, Lucky Foot Ranch and Chris & Kristina’s Market Garden. www.rhedshotsauce.com | (401) 487-3956

Pedal to the Metal W H E T S TO N E WO R K S H O P P O L I S H E S P L A N S F O R E X PA N S I O N Article by Dennis McCarthy

Concerned that cash flow could be a problem when it came time to pay monthly bills, the owners of metal fabrication outfit Whetstone Workshop wisely controlled their expenses when starting out. Procuring commissions from interior designers and architects for large architectural and sculptural installations, their typical project takes time to fabricate and must be synchronized with other design elements. This focus on quality over quantity requires careful attention to billing cycles and workflow. Fortuitously, their skeleton crew of metal workers have thrived in the creative atmosphere of an old industrial mill building in East Providence, where they initially set up shop. With a brand built on distinguished, excellent work and strong relationships with their customers, Whetstone has flourished despite the pandemic. As revenue and employment increased, Whetstone found itself needing more space, and they are currently looking to buy a building in the East Bay. To meet this goal, the RISBDC helped them make and achieve a plan of paying down debt and securing working capital.

About working with an RISBDC business consultant, Maria Martinez said, “Dennis is amazing. Helping Whetstone secure funding changed the course of our business for the better.” From all of us at the RISBDC, we wish Whetstone a bright future and can’t wait to see where this expansion takes them! To learn more about Whetstone Workshop, visit their website at WhetstoneWorkshop.com. Are you ready to start writing your business success story? Attend one of our upcoming workshops or set up a free one-on-one counseling session. Register at RISBDC.org and get in the game today. Dennis McCarthy is the Northern RI Regional Director of the Rhode Island Small Business Development Center. The Rhode Island Small Business Development Center at URI is part of a national network of nearly 1,000 business assistance centers that provide counseling and training to small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. Partially funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, we help businesses to succeed from start-up to maturity.
