FROM THE CHAIRMAN

PAUL D.P. SCALLY Ladies and Gentleman, Girls and Boys it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Chatham Town Football Club this afternoon for our FA WPL Cup game. Firstly, a warm welcome to our visitors Coventry Ladies FC who’ve made a long trip to Kent today. It’s particuarlly fitting to welcome our visitors back here to Chatham Town as I reflect on the last time we played eachother - that fateful title decider!

Chatham Town FC. My thanks, as always, go to Chatham Town FC who warmly host our matches here. Fans were made aware of our decision to move the first team game here earlier in the week. I apologise for any inconvience this has caused fans but I’ve no doubt this afternoon will provide some good entertainment and fans are set to watch a good game of football.

Best of luck to both our teams today, as we must not forget our Reserves look for consecutive wins today as they face Crystal Palace Reserves at home. Thank you for coming along this afternoon. Enjoy the game. Up the Gills Ladies! Paul D P Scally

Although it was a disappointing afternoon for the club not to be able to clinch the title, I was tremendously impressed by the way both teams played that day and felt the occassion was a brilliant reflection of the FA WPL and women’s football more generally. Of course, lots has changed since then. The development of the club has accelerated and I’ve enjoyed formally welcoming our women’s teams to Gillingham FC. The nostalgia of today’s fixture is further enhanced by the fact we’ve moved the match to GILLINGHAMFOOTBALLCLUB.COM 03

FROM THE MANAGER

SIMON RATCLIFFE Welcome everyone to our FA Women’s Premier League Cup game against Coventry Ladies this afternoon. Firstly, my thanks to Chatham Town for hosting today’s game. We’ve been delighted at the number of fans showing their support for us so far this season at Priestfield and hope to continue that pattern. Your support on the sidelines really spurs the girls on and long may that continue. We were disappointed not to get straight back into action last weekend when our game against Queens Park Rangers was postponed on Saturday morning. With a week off I know the girls are ready and raring for today’s game. Coventry, picking up from their title winning season last year, have hit the ground running in the FA Women’s Premier League North Division, We know they will be a very tough opponent this afternoon. Both teams will look to play some good, entertaining football so fans are in for a positive showcase of the women’s game. Enjoy the match. Simon

BLUES NEWS

GILLS BEATEN BY BRIGHTON ...Gillingham Ladies face eleven former team-mates from last season under the floodlights at Priestfield... John Seager Despite taking the lead though Louise Lorton, three goals including two from Charlotte Owen and another from Sophie Perry, Amy Taylor and Jay Blackie condemned Gillingham Ladies to defeat at Priestfield Stadium as they came up against a strong Brighton & HA Ladies side. The game started with both sides trying to get a foot hold of the game. But it was Gillingham who took the early lead on five minutes as a back pass from Brighton defender Taylor was not cleared properly by Faye Baker and Lorton placed the ball into the goal. The pressure began to show on twenty minutes as a cross down the left from Fliss Gibbons wasn’t dealt with by the Gills Ladies defence and Sophie Perry was there to pick up the ball at the far right post to tip the ball past Courtney Shanly and into the back of the net. Brighton took the lead on 41 minutes as they worked well down the right side of the pitch, Fliss Gibbons managed to break away from her defender and pass the ball to Owen who hit a low shot which had Shanly beaten all ends. The second half began with Gills Ladies trying to get back into the game as they looked for an elusive second goal. But it was Brighton who could have added a third goal as some more poor defending let Lucy Somes go on a darting run before setting up Gibbons and

she hit a powerful shot towards goal and it clipped the post but the referee stopped the game as the linesman adjudged Gibbons to be offside. Brighton added a third goal on 54 minutes as another run from Somes troubled the Gillingham defence and she setup Blackie who hit a beautiful shot from outside penalty box. Shanly did well to save the shot, but the rebound fell the way of Gibbons whose delightful pass to Owen was spectacularly slotted home. Gills Ladies tried to fight on with a good team spirit but they were done again on 61 minutes as a deep cross into the box from left came the way of former captain Blackie who was unmarked and simply headed past the outstreched Shanly.

Brighton kept pressing in their best 90 minutes of the season so far and on 87 minutes made it five. Gibbons got the ball on the edge of the box before hitting a beautiful lob which rebounded off the bar before ending up at the feet of Taylor who was there at the right place at the right time to tap the ball past Shanly and into the empty net. Gillingham Ladies looked to turn their attention to bouncing back in double quick time against Queens Park Rangers Ladies FC but with the game being postponed due to a ban on the visitors from Middlesex FA, will be looking to use today’s Cup game to re-group. Gillingham Ladies line up

Gills Ladies were forced to defend a Brighton corner, the ball was crossed in and it took a last gasp defensive header from Lauren Phillips to clear the ball away from Somes to give the Gills defence some more breathing space.

Courtney Shanly, Lauren Philips, Lauren Williams (Capt), Emma Tune, Emma Michelmore, Rachel Ahern, Louise Lorton (Emily Lyons), Bonnie Long (Daniella Farmer), Natalie Crinean, Ashlee Hincks, Ellie Manning (Ashley Loosemoore).

Owen nearly completed her hat trick as she got the ball from a great run from Gills top goal scorer last season, Charlotte Gurr, who unleashed a powerful shot from just inside the penalty box but the ball cannoned off the bar and was grabbed by Shanly at the first attempt.

Gills Ladies tried to get forward looking for a consolation but despite the hard efforts of the girls including Ashlee Hincks and Lorton, couldn’t break done the Brighton defence.

Brighton & HA Ladies line up Faye Baker, Charlotte Boswell (Charlotte Gurr), Sophie Perry, Jay Blackie (Capt.), Amy Taylor, Deanna Cooper, Lucy Somes (Catherine Cooper), Isabelle Burt, Charlotte Owen, Amy Green (Lisa Fulgence), Fliss Gibbons. Subs not used: Kirsty Barton Attendance: 259

LONG POISED FOR COMEBACK

...After a frustrating period of the sidelines, the Gills midfielder is set to return to first team action today... Charlotte Richardson With a considerably smaller squad at the club’s disposal this season, the loss of midfielder Charlotte Long due to suspension hit Gillingham Ladies hard with a series of fixtures in short succession. Poised to make her return on Sunday against Queens Park Rangers, Long revealed how she and her team-mates were disappointed the fixture was cancelled. “It’s been very tough, firstly, with Jade’s injury, she is a key player for the club. The injury that Jade sustained against Plymouth was a freak accident that I’ll probably never see again in my career playing football. I think that because there was such a big break in play, with our girls obviously being the most effected by the situation, that on our day and under different circumstances we could have got a result.” “Regarding the Brighton game, I think that the players that played showed great determination and worked hard against a strong Brighton side. Considering we had a lot of young players that had to step up I thought that we done okay. And having Sunday’s game cancelled is frustrating.”

first team for another week just makes the fire in my belly bigger and makes me more eager to get going again.” “Playing Coventry in my first game back should be a test, considering that they were the last game I played last season where we got beat.” Despite her frustrations on the sideline, Long said: “It’s been good to watch how we play, and where we could improve because you can’t always see them sort of things when your playing. I’d like to add that it’s been frustrating at times and it’s been a big eye opener and an experience I’d not like to be repeating any time soon.” Long believes she and her team-mates will produce a performance to get back on track. “I think whenever you suffer defeat it always makes you want to win more, just to prove to everyone that we can win and the girls definitely fee; ready for the tough challenge and battle we will face against a strong Coventry side on Sunday.” Long went onto add the important role fans have played

in supporting the girls, “It’s quite surreal knowing that we are getting that many people to watch our games, it gives the girls such a buzz walking out in front of a large crowd, and gives us that extra lift and desire to win.” “Having that many people turn up each week also shows us that people do want us to do well and do believe in us when others have deserted us and left us to fend for ourselves. And all I can say to the fans is please keep coming your support, it really does spur us girls on!” Long continued: “I think that becoming a part of the men’s club was one of the best things that we could have done. We now have the best facilities to train on, and the best pitch in the league to play on. We have the best coaching staff that anyone could ask for, and the best fans.” “The support from the club has been amazing. The club have really helped a great deal in supporting us and supplying what we needed to be a football club.”

Long was able to use the missed opportunity of a cancelled game to get a run out for the Reserves who beat Bedford 2-0. “I got 90 mins for the reserves so in that sense I still got to play but I think just missing out playing for the
