FROM THE CHAIRMAN
PAUL D.P. SCALLY Ladies and Gentleman, Girls and Boys it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to MEMS Priestfield Stadium this afternoon for our FA WPL Cup game.
FC, is to wear the shirt with pride, commitment and determination. As long as we do that for 90 minutes every game, we will not go too far wrong.
Firstly, welcome to our visitors Tottenham Hotspur Ladies who’ve made the short trip into Kent today. We began our campaign against today’s visitors back in August. It will be a good indicator of progress made to see how the girls perform today.
We are enjoying a lot of development and growth around Gillingham Ladies. Having the women’s side as part of the club has given us a real boost. Our side offer inspiration for Centre of Excellence players, many of whom I hope will be sitting in the stands today, with the ambition to one day be playing for our first team.
A very warm welcome also to our matchday sponsors Evolution For Women. It’s extremeley fitting that such an organisation is the first to sponsor one of our home games. I’m delighted they’ve come on board to support our football club and the work we’re doing, not only for our players, but the wider community. I hope we will be able to continue to work with them in the future.
term for free. We host Summer Schools throughout the season and I’d encourage fans and parents to keep an eye out for future opportunities to get your young ones playing at Gillingham FC. Priestfield will also be host to free fitness taster sessions lead by our Community Trust and GFC Gems. Again, this is an opportunity for fans and members of the local community to enjoy being part of our club. Please read further into this programme for more information. Best of luck to the girls today.
We had another popular Soccer School for Girls this week. Our Community Trust delivered hours of coaching to dozens of girls during half

I’m concious of the fact we’ve got a lot of new faces at the club this season after losing nearly a dozen players during pre-season. It will take time for Simon and the girls to gel together. All I ask, as of all the teams here at Gillingham GILLINGHAMFOOTBALLCLUB.COM 03

FROM THE MANAGER
SIMON RATCLIFFE Welcome everyone to our FA Women’s Premier League Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon. Firstly, I’d like to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the players and staff to today’s matchday sponsors, Evolution For Women. We’re delighted they are supporting our club and sincerely hope to put on a performance for them and their guests to enjoy.
fixture. After a good spell of play we conceded and eventually fell to a 3-0 defeat. Our visitors went on to enjoy a run of wins and have had a brilliant start to the season. It will be interesting to play the team again today and assess the work we have done since that opening day encounter.
We’ve had lots of positive news both on and off the pitch this week. The girls are gaining valuable experience this season and I know manager Jason Wright has been really pleased with their recent performances. I’m delighted they all got the result they deserved. I’m sure they will be looking forward to taking on Tottenham Hotspur Reserves over at Chatham Town FC today and I wish them all the best in their fixture. I’d also like to pass my congratulation onto our Girls Academy student Laurel Collins. As you’ll read further on in this programme, Laurel represented the football club at St Georges Park when she collected a Football Futures award alongside colleagues on the Kent FA’s Youth Council. Well done to all involved and especially Laurel, it’s fantastic to hear of the achievements of players within our club who have taken opportunties presented to them and are giving back to the game, Enjoy today’s game. Gillingham Ladies Head of Media and Marketing, Charlotte Richardson explained how delighted the club is to welcome Evolution For Women to today’s game: “Part of our club’s rapid growth and development over the past 18 months has been rooted in a firm commitment to use football as a powerful platform to empower individuals and groups to reach their potential.”
“To be able to combine forces with Evolution For Women is a special opportunity. GILLS YOUNGSTER RECEIVES FA AWARD Laurel Collins represented the club attending the FA Football Futures Awards with the Kent FA Youth Council with whom she is a part of besides her studies at the club’s Girls Academy. The Kent FA Youth Council received national recognition for their work promoting the Respect campaign within Kent and Laurel was presented with the opportunity to visit St Georges Park to collect the award. Laurel has been a part of the Gills since she was 11: “I started at the Centre of Excellence in the under 12’s for half a season and then moved to the under14’s for the next season. I then didn’t get through the next trials so played grass roots for the next two seasons then thanks to Jason Wright I came back to the Centre to play for the Under 17’s and this is my second season with them.” Laurel added: “It’s been a fantastic week, I got to start with the Ladies Reserves and thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to play with them again and would definitely like to play for them once I finish at the Centre.” “Then I had a brilliant two days with the members of the FA Youth Council, who won an FA Football Futures Respect Award, at St Georges Park. It was such a privilege to be apart of this and it was amazing to be there with a great group of people. I would love to be able to go to St Georges again in

the future.” Laurel added; “It is great to be a part of the Gills. I am getting such great opportunities. It’s a privilege to be able to represent Gillingham as they have given me the opportunity to do both and gain so much more out of football.” Laurel is not only part of the Gills exemplary Centre of Excellence but also studies at the club too as part of the inaugural school of students making up the Girls Academy. She explained, “This year the first Gillingham Girls Football Academy was set up and I am fortunate enough to have a place there.” “Being at college at Priestfield is great and is such an opportunity to study whilst being
coached and being with people who have such knowledge and experience in the football world.” “Women’s football is taking off and with the opportunities being given by Gillingham Football Club it can only to a good thing. The pathway for the girls into ladies football that wasn’t there before really helps as there is now a link and we have some where to go and the jump in to ladies football isn’t as hard and daunting.” “In the future I’d like to move into the Reserves, continue the sports course at the Academy hopefully achieving top results in the BETC, if possible to play for the Ladies First Team and eventually become a coach or physiotherapist within Gillingham.”

WHINNETT PLEASED WITH RETURN TO GILLS Gillingham’s latest recruit Nikita Whinnett, was a key figure on the Gills wing last season, but amongst the many changes within the club this summer decided to leave during the close season. However after some time away, as Nikita explains, was quick to rejoined when the opportunity arose;
“After last season with all the girls leaving, I found it a bit tough to stay on my own. I went away and made the biggest mistake. I missed the team, missed the club, missed the fans. Everything about the team is the reason I came back. Other clubs I’ve been at have been very clicky, Gills isn’t like that,
it’s not like that at all” The club has a new manager, a new squad and a new home ground. We asked Nikita what it had been like in the first few weeks back; “Everyone made me feel welcome, they took me up to the ground and that, it was pretty amazing, I felt special, I felt appreciated, you know what I mean.”
And what of the chance to turn out at Priestfield Stadium and play in front of the good crowds we’ve been attracting? “I can’t wait, I tell you I really can’t. I got butterflies the other week when I walked on it”
