It is also more practical with more space – due to the largest boot in its class. Another statistic that I’m impressed by is the 4MOTION (4WD) can tow over 2.5 tonne. QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH ASTON MARTIN LAUNCHES IN TUSCANY

By: Liz Dobson There’s a good reason Aston Martin launched the all-new DB11 grand tourer in Tuscany. Not just because of the roads, the scenery or July weather but because it is the territory of its rival, Ferrari. Revealed at this year’s Geneva motor show, the replacement for the 13-year-old DB9 (James Bond snaffled the DB10 badge for Spectre) is the first product to be launched under the British company’s “Second Century” plan. Aston Martin is 103 years old with a four-model line-up – Rapide, Vanquish, Vantage and DB11. (There are also the limited-edition Vulcan and Red Bull 001 for select customers only.) But under new CEO Andy Palmer, the brand is set to increase production from the current 7000 models a year thanks to a new factory in Wales, and

Volkswagen GTI Ed40

VOLKSWAGEN’S LATEST SPECIAL EDITION MODEL IS THE BEST YET

By: Cameron Officer Volkswagen’s Golf GTI Edition 40 is the best hot hatch you’ll probably never get to drive. And we’re really sorry about that. What an absolute tease. Not only is the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 40 the most powerful iteration of what many consider the original hot hatch, but the handful of examples Volkswagen New Zealand managed to snaffle have already been sold. So no, sorry. You literally cannot have this car. Which is a bit of a shame because Volkswagen’s latest special edition model is the best yet. The Wolfsburg-headquartered manufacturer has made quite a habit of releasing special edition GTIs over

We’re the first NZ media to have week-long test of Jaguar’s SUV. By: Liz Dobson It may be Jaguar’s first foray into SUVs, but when the British-based company decided to join the world’s most popular model it did it with pizzazz. making up close to 40 per cent of new vehicle sales globally, it’s an extremely conservative car manufacturer that decides to not join in the everincreasing market. While mainstream manufacturers have been offering all size of SUVs for a number of years, the premium brands are now joining in. Now it’s Jaguar’s turn to compete in the premium market with the F-Pace medium-sized SUV sitting alongside the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW’s X3 and X4, Audi’s Q5 and Porsche’s Macan. Launched international in late April, the F-Pace has just gone on sale in New Zealand. The range starts at $95,000 for the 2-litre diesel Prestige and topped out at $165,000 for the First Edition limited model, of which Jaguar NZ was allotted five, all of them have sold before arriving in dealerships. The F-Pace joins the F-Type sports cars, plus XE and XF sedans as the British brand revitalizes its products with new modular platforms and technology. At the international launch in Montenegro, that Driven attended, Jaguar’s marketing team was calling the F-Pace a ‘performance crossover’ and ‘practical sports car’. And at the local launch, Jaguar NZ’s brand manager, Paul Ricketts agreed with that description for the product. “It’s going to be an extremely

Land rover

Land Rover stopped people in their tracks today as the Discovery Sport SUV towed three luxury train carriages, weighing 108 tonnes, along a railway track in a demonstration of towing capability. The 10km journey through the Rhine region of northern Switzerland put the compact Discovery Sport’s pulling power to the ultimate test. Though the Discovery Sport has a certified maximum towing weight of 2,500kg (2.5 tonnes), it was able to pull 60 times its own weight, thanks to Jaguar Land Rover’s 180PS Ingenium diesel engine - providing 430Nm

of torque. In addition, the Discovery Sport benefitted from Land Rover’s portfolio of towing and traction technologies such as Terrain Response, Tow Assist, Tow Hitch Assist and All Terrain Progress Control – a semi-autonomous off-road driving system that automatically manages engine output and braking, to complete the stunt. This impressive feat coincides with the Discovery Sport being announced winner of the 1,700-1,899kg class at the prestigious Tow Car Awards in the UK, with the Land Rover Discovery named ‘Tow Car of the Decade’. “Towing is in Land Rover’s DNA, and Discovery Sport is no exception. Over the years, we have introduced gamechanging towing technologies to take the stress out of towing for our customers. I’ve spent most of my career travelling to the most punishing parts of the world to test Land Rovers in grueling conditions, yet this is the most extreme towing test I’ve ever done.” - Karl Richards Visit the Archibald & Shorter showroom at

Bentley has created the ultimate angling accessory; the new Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner. Hand-crafted by Bentley’s bespoke coachbuilding division, the Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner is an exquisite installation which houses all the equipment required for a successful day on the river. Four rods are stored in special tubes trimmed in Saddle leather with Linen cross-stitching and are located on the underside of the parcel shelf. A pair of landing nets in matching leather bags are stored in a bespoke, carpet-trimmed hard pocket, built into the side of the boot. At the heart of the Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner are three individual, Saddle-leather-trimmed units: a master tackle station; a refreshment case; and waterproof waderstowage trunk. Waterproof boot-floor and rear-sill-protection covers are discreetly integrated into the rear of the Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner, as is an electronic dehumidifier unit to ensure the area remains fresh and dry.
