Pawleys Plantation
This Jack Nicklaus Signature course which according to Golf Digest is “an 18-hole championship layout that ranks among his finest.” Nicklaus designed Pawleys Plantation “to capture the natural terrain and complement and enhance the beauty of the salt marsh and Lowcountry.”

Slope: 129 70.0
The par 72 layout winds through hardwood Architect........... Jack Nicklaus and pine forests and along a saltwater marsh. While landing areas and greens are generous, the course does require golfers to think their way around all 18 holes, remaining true to Nicklaus’ belief that golf “is a game of precision as well as power.” The front nine features tree-lined fairways and beautiful lakes, while the back nine delivers spectacular views of the salt marsh from six different holes. The TifEagle hybrid Bermuda greens offer subtle contours and run-offs typical to a Jack Nicklaus design. Measuring 7,026 yards from the “Golden Bear” tees, the course does however offer five sets of tee boxes. This is a course suitable to challenge golfers of all levels, age or gender.“ America’s Top Courses” by Zaget Survey, Top 30 of the SC’s more than 300 golf courses according to Golf Digest - 2009, 2011, 2012. This course has 18 unique holes, stunning visuals, as well as isolated teeing areas. It features wide, bowled-in fairways encircled with waste bunkering. Water comes into play on many of the holes, but aside from the epic carry on the 12th, can be avoided by most golfers. The greens are Emerald bermuda grass and the fairways are 419 Bermuda. River Club, a semi-private course, has proven Pawleys Island, SC to be one of the most challenging courses in the 11 Pine Circle Myrtle Beach area and features new Champion (866) 694-2456 Ultradwarf greens. This Tom Jackson signature PrimeTimeGolfDeals.com course is one of the premier “plantation” courses and a favorite among returning golfers. The dramatic par-5, 18th is unquestionably one of the finest finishing holes on the Grand Strand, a reachable par-5 with a peninsula fairway that, if reached successfully from the tee, leaves as little as a middle iron second shot to the green and an excellent eagle chance. . Landing areas are generous off the tee and over 60 large bunkers encourage strategic shot placement. Amoeba-shaped greens cause many approach shots to play appealingly different from one day to the next. Course designer Dan Maples has frequently referred to Willbrook Plantation as “One of my best,” and most golfers agree. The first hole is a challenging par-4 with a slight dog-leg right that requires a well placed tee shot over a former rice field to have a clear shot at the green for your second shot. The par 5 15th hole gives up very few birdies and demonstrates the many challenges of the wetlands, waterways and stately oaks used in this great design. Tee shots are down hill just short of a creek, and then your second and third shots are back up hill to a well-protected green. For the sixth year in a row, Golf for Women has listed Willbrook on their list of “America’s 50 Best Courses,” (#25) and Golf Digest awarded it 4.5 Stars since 2006 in their “Places to Play.” Amenities: Golf Shop, Grill, Bar, Driving Range, Practice Area 14

in at the Myrtle Beach Golf Insider with their thoughts on the area’s hottest-trending courses heading into the peak season. Of those courses played and reviewed by visiting golfers in early 2016, the following courses had the highest overall ratings as of March 1 (based on their 10 most recently submitted reviews):
Tiger’s Eye Golf Links at Ocean Ridge Plantation (9.3) Grande Dunes Resort Club (9.2) The Dunes Golf & Beach Club (9.1) SouthCreek at Myrtle Beach National (9.0) Myrtlewood Golf Club – Palmetto Course (8.9) Prestwick Country Club (8.8) Panther’s Run Golf Links at Ocean Ridge Plantation (8.7) River Club (8.7) Long Bay Club (8.7) True Blue Plantation (8.7) Myrtlewood Golf Club – Pinehills Course (8.7) Golf Insider - Myrtle Beach
Of his Feb. 22, 2016 experience at Tiger’s Eye, reviewer Brian offered that “overall course conditions were excellent. Greens were fast and true, holding well. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Starter took the time to engage in conversation with our group and helped set the tone for an enjoyable day.”
Prestwick Country Club
Timothy, an 8.6 handicapper who played Prestwick back in January, opined that “Prestwick is one of the best in Myrtle. The greens are painted up a bit but very playable. It’s one of my favorites. We played after a few days of rain but only 5 holes were cart restricted because it drains very well. The staff was very friendly which helps makes the day pleasant. Some easy holes and some you really need to pay attention. We will return soon for another round.” In addition to their high Golf Insider rankings, Grande Dunes, The Dunes Golf & Beach Club & True Blue Plantation also garnered
recent attention from Golfweek Magazine as each course was named to the publication’s “Best You Can Play in South Carolina” list for 2016 – joining seven additional Grand Strand designs (Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, Tidewater Golf Club, King’s North at Myrtle Beach National, TPC Myrtle Beach, Legends Resort & Golf ’s Moorland Course, The Dye Course at Barefoot Resort and Heritage Club) on this prestigious list. Windswept hills and deep-faced bunkers are just a few of the challenges that await players. Most of the holes are without high vegetation, providing a visual presentation like no other course in the area. The challenge and difficulty of this course comes primarily from the unobstructed breeze that wafts constantly over the course , and the strategically placed bunkers and lush, deep rough that border all fairways. “America’s Top Golf Courses” - Zagat Survey, 2003, 2009. T
he resurgence of River Oaks Golf Plantation continues, an ascent now highlighted by being named the 2015 Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year. River Oaks Golf Plantation is the Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the yearThe MBAGCOA evaluates Golf Course of the Year nominees on four criteria: exceptional quality of the golf course, exceptional quality of the ownership and management, outstanding contribution to the community, and significant contribution to the game. By virtue of winning the award, River Oaks became a candidate for state and potentially national honors. Less than a decade ago it was hard to imagine River Oaks, a 27-hole facility, earning the award. The course was languishing under an old management company, but in 2009, led by managing partner Dan Gray, ownership reclaimed control of the course and implemented a plan to restore River Oaks. Over the last six years, River Oaks has installed new cart paths, renovated bunkers throughout the property, installed a new putting green, removed 4,000 pine trees to improve conditioning and playability, rebuilt the irrigation system,
and became the first Grand Strand layout to install Champion Bermuda grass greens, among other enhancements. “It’s the culmination of all this work,” Scott Taylor, the general manager at River Oaks, said of the award. “It’s validation for the work we’ve done, and it’s huge for us moving forward. We have a grand vision for River Oaks’ (future).” The work at River Oaks is hardly complete. The Fox and Otter nines have been completely rebuilt and the Bear course is undergoing a gradual transformation. Management is also enclosing the clubhouse patio, a development that will certainly enhance the after-golf experience for players. River Oaks is also very active in the community, hosting 18 charity golf tournaments and donating rounds to many others over the past year. The course has also hosted PGA Junior Golf League events, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, the National Junior Golf Tour, and the Myrtle Beach Junior Golf Foundation, helping develop the game’s next generation of players. Certified Instructor, Joe De Maio Greg Norman Golf Academy PGA Apprentice In golf, there is one connection to the golf club. That connection is the grip. The hands are the only part of the body that touches the golf club and having a proper grip is one of the easiest ways to become more consistent in golf.
Finally, grab your golf club and take your grip. If you are having trouble recreating that same look, simply open your hands and re-grip the golf club so your palm of your bottom hand is parallel to the back of your top hand. So remember, if you want to play more consistent golf, it all starts with the grip!
Whether you interlock, overlap, or have all ten fingers on the golf club; there is still one key to look for in your grip to have more consistent rounds. The key is having a natural grip to your body. To find your grip is simple. First, take your golf posture without a golf club and allow your arms to hang down naturally. Next, bring your palms together so they are parallel to one another. Take note to this position. For some golfers, their hands maybe be in a weaker position, which would have 40

Golfer’s Elbow A common injury that the golfer may encounter is elbow pain. Pain on the inside is usually referred to as Golfer’s elbow”. Golfer’s elbow is a very common injury and there are usually more than 200,000 cases every year. Golfer’s elbow is a tendinitis or inflammation of the forearm muscles that attach onto the inside of the elbow. Factors that contribute to this injury include: overuse or over practice, poor swing mechanics, over swinging, not warming muscles up properly, and incorrect grip or setup. Risk for this increases with age (usually after 40), and is highest in people who perform the repetitive activity more than two hours daily. Treatment mainly focuses on a “relative” rest period. You need to stop the inciting event that is causing the strain, inflammation, and pain. To allow this to calm down, oral or topical anti-inflammatories are commonly used. Corticosteroid injections or platelet rich plasma injections are also used commonly when needed. A counterforce brace or strap is also a good option to use. During this time I like to have golfer’s focus on physical therapy that will reduce inflammation, promote flexibility, increase range of motion, and increase strength. This process will typically be about 6-12 weeks depending on the severity of this injury. When that has been addressed, swing mechanics need evaluated and modified as indicated. This will then allow a better and gradual return to golf. With this successful formula your pain and dysfunction will be resolved, and your golf game will be more improved as well. Dry Needling Dry Needling is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study. It is a technique that is unequaled in finding and eliminating musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunction that leads to pain and functional deficits. Dry Needling works by causing a micro lesion within the pathological tissue, breaking up shortened tissues and inhibiting a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue; thereby, normalizing the inflammatory response and centrally mediating the pain. This mechanical and neuromuscular effect provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal which leads to a reduction in pain.

Fun, Affordable & Convenient Chris King – Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday
G
ene Hamm designed Beachwood Golf Club in 1968 with the traveling golfer in mind, delivering a layout that was long on playability and devoid of trickery. Forty-eight years later, one of the Grand Strand’s pioneering courses continues to deliver on its original promise. Fun, affordable, friendly and convenient are the words used most often to describe Beachwood and it’s a time honored recipe for success. Beachwood’s popularity starts with a course that is designed to challenge but certainly not overwhelm. The layout is 6,844 yards from the tips and has subsequent tees at 6,347, 5,695 and 4,947 yards, long enough for all while offering everyone a chance to score. Beachwood is a good course to have in a golf package and it’s a great layout to have first in the rotation. Because of the course’s playability, it gives players time to adjust to the heavier air (typically balls don’t travel as far at sea level as they do at higher elevations) and start their trip on a positive note. The 14th hole, a double dogleg par 5 is the course’s sternest test. At 581 yards from the tips and 560 from the white tees, it’s a true three-shot hole. There will be no cutting of corners or eagle putts on the 14th. Three good shots will result in a birdie putt, anything less could lead to trouble. Conversely players will have a chance to score on the par 4 seventh and twelveth holes, both short, relatively straight holes that leave the vast majority of players with a wedge into the green.
Beachwood only requires one carry across water – on the par 3, fourth hole – but water is visible on 11 holes. The course has always been known for it’s outstanding green conditions. “We heard all spring that our greens were the best golfers played,” Director of Golf, Kevin Lawson said. “Part of our renovation projects over the past 2 years has been - we were able to get rid of over 250 dead trees along the course. This has definitely helped in not only getting more sunlight for the greens to stay healthy but added more beautification to the overall course itself. We have added fresh new sand to all our bunkers and developed new landscapes and flower beds in certain areas. Our guests are going to see a whole new Beachwood – if they haven’t played us in awhile”. Beachwood’s greens don’t have the proverbial elephants buried in them, making speed the most important component of a good putting round. With the latitude players have off the tee, the putter is the most important club in the bag. One of Beachwood’s under-the-radar strengths is course drainage. The layout drains as well as any course on the beach and, as a result, carts are almost always allowed on the fairway. Beachwood features good conditions, outstanding value and friendly customer service. Mix in the fact that there are no houses or condos, and Beachwood delivers a round of golf that folks are happy to see on their itinerary. A good layout and the opportunity to score well is a tough combination to pass up.

What makes the River Hills course like no other is that it is peppered with non-parallel fairways, rolling hills, and frequent 40-foot elevation changes. It is also unique in the sense that it has only one set of parallel holes: # 1 and # 10. You play out nine and play back in, ending at the clubhouse at the end of each nine. The 17th hole is considered the signature hole, with its double dog-leg par 5 and two water carries.
Extensive renovation in 2003 has made the course friendlier, although it retains its intimidating look and feel. Crushed limestone, instead of the usual pine straw, helps outline the greens, adding a pleasing visual aspect. Tall pine trees surround the course, and lush, dense live oaks around the greens add to the southern feel. Amenities: Golf Shop, Snack Bar, Practice Area, Driving Range www.mbgolfinsider.com

Play like a Pro with VPAR: A Must for Every Round
M
yrtle Beach’s collection of world-class golf, amenities and attractions has made it one of the country’s most popular buddy trip destinations. For years, the sacred golf pilgrimage with friends has been a regular event – but perhaps one that could use a boost into the 21st century. There are a lot of mobile apps out there – games, GPS trackers, swing analyzers and the like – but few have the functionality and industry reputation of VPAR. The brainchild of a group of friends who were fed up with not knowing the current standings as they faced a difficult Par 5 – VPAR invented the concept of “live golf scoring” and represents the next wave of golf ’s tech revolution.
The VPAR app, available for free on Apple and Android devices, creates an up-to-the-second leaderboard in the palm of your hand. Users create a game (best ball, Ryder Cup style and any other format you can think of), add in friends and punch in their gross scores at each hole. Shots are worked out automatically, saving that poor person who would’ve been left counting scorecards or deciphering if that was a 6 made to look like a 5.

Archived scorecards let you reference all those matches from your trips without having to find those crumpled paper scorecards in a shoebox at home. There’s also stat analysis that allows users to sift through important metrics like greens in regulation, driving accuracy and putts per round. It’s all at your fingertips, and readily accessible in the time it takes to grab a pencil and jot down a score. VPAR creates a more immersive, competitive and more connected golf experience for those who utilize the technology. If you’re going to take a trip to a region whose courses are frequented by the pros, you’ll need to compete like one.

A rare, harmonious blend of the penal, heroic and strategic philosophies of golf course architecture. Architect Dan Maples and developer Larry Young created a course where variety and innovation are the names of the game and no two holes are the same. Consider several marsh-oriented holes, two island green par threes, strategic (and stunningly beautiful) fresh water lakes, long holes, short holes...the consummate combination of shot making requirements. Bold tee shots and well measured approaches are required to conquer this champion of North Carolina. Amenities: Golf Shop, Grill, Driving Range, Practice Area 74

xcellence. Pride. Tradition. These are the hallmarks of an award winning golf community. Named after the prestigious Thistle Club in Leith, Scotland, Thistle Golf Club in Sunset Beach, N.C., is just a short drive up the coast from Myrtle Beach. Offering one the most beautiful yet challenging 27- hole layouts on the Grand Stand. At Thistle Golf Club, the attention to detail is evident throughout – from the design and condition of the course, the grand clubhouse, to the attentive service you receive from the moment you arrive. The clubhouse interior boasts many antiquities salvaged from Old World European buildings and classically paired with the best in modern conveniences. With an interior of high exposed-beam ceilings, the imported Scottish bar to the amazing displays of historic documents and golf collectibles, including antiques from Europe and golf artifacts from the British Isle, you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the early 1800’s. The Thistle Clubhouse is a crown jewel and is unsurpassed in the region. Recent work and renovations include revamped traps and reconstruction of numerous bulkheads. New greens are currently being installed, one nine at a time. The original Bentgrass greens proved difficult to maintain during the high heat and humidity of the summer months. The renovation of the greens, to TifEagle Bermuda, started with the MacKay nine (completed September 2014), and will be followed by the Cameron nine (May 2015), and will finish up with the Stewart nine (July 2015).
The conversion to TifEagle Bermuda will provide a more consistent surface year-round. This track opened in 1999 and quickly became a real favorite. Awarded 4.5 stars by Golf Digest, Thistle has quietly become one of the region’s finest courses. The dramatic 27-hole layout reflects its 1815 Scottish heritage with rolling and mounded fairawys, stacked-sod bunkers, natural water hazards and waste areas that must be traversed to reach the well-manicured, TifEagle Bermuda greens. The creation of Thistle Golf Club began with a beautiful piece of land and a talented course designer, Tim Cate. The skillful blending of natural elevation changes and wetlands with carefully carved bunkers and large greens is visually stunning. Thistle is a luxury gated community, where custom designed homes offer unobstructed views of rolling fairways, shimmering lakes and acres of wildflowers. This course is one you will not want to miss. One of the most appealing types of planned communities is a golf course commu-
nity – even for those who do not play golf. These communities have much to offer, from young families just starting out to empty-nesters to retirees. The obvious attraction is the golf course itself, which can run around and/or through the subdivision. The course can offer serene views of trees, green space, and water. The openness of the course and its landscaping give residents beautiful sights and in most cases, fresher air. For those who enjoy the game of golf, community residents often receive discounts or incentives to use and or belong to their neighborhood course. Quite often, driving to the golf courses can add a great deal of time to the golfer’s day. However having one that is just around the corner is very convenient and a time saver. Along with the golf course, these communities tend to have much to offer, including clubhouses, fitness/wellness centers, pools, tennis court, basketball courts, playgrounds, walking paths, ponds, planned activities for residents, and more. While the common grounds of golf course communities are usually as immaculately kept as the course itself. Being a community built around a sport, those living within tend to have a more active and healthier lifestyle. There is also the sense of prestige attached to living in a golf course community. Golf course communities are not for everyone. Many times, they call for higher monthly and/or annual dues. Homes, especially those that back up directly to the golf course, may have strict deed restrictions and home owner’s association rules that must be obeyed. Those that back up to the course could have spectacular views, but could also have to deal with poorly shot golf balls, course noise, and a lack of privacy during the warm weather months, depending on which portion of the course the home borders. Each prospective buyer should sit down with their REALTOR – an area expert who can help the buyers with the weighing of the pros and cons. For a great many buyers, the pros will far outweigh any cons, making the move into a golf course community one of the more enjoyable life choices they undertake. Kind Regards,

Keep It In The Fairway
General Manager – Superintendent A True Partnership

G
olf Courses --- we all love them – and what a fantastic environment in which to work. But WOW --- what a responsibility we have to manage people, places and things that are open 364 days a year from dawn to dusk +, and hosting Members, Locals, Vacationers and golfers ages 5 to 95 and from raw beginners to highly skilled professionals. It really does take a TEAM of committed professionals to make a golf course operate….. and to do it well… it takes some real motivation. As the General Manager at Sandpiper Bay, I am very lucky to have a Great Team… and my MVP, my Right Hand Man…. is Jon Stewart, our Superintendent. Jon has been with us now for almost two years, after previous jobs at Myrtlewood Golf Club and the Grande Dunes Clubs, both in Myrtle Beach. Jon came to us after our long time Superintendent Jay Varallo passed away suddenly due to cancer. Taking over a golf course is difficult for any new Manager, and Jon had to step in quickly and overcome several agronomic issues after a difficult summer, and to organize his team that had just lost a close friend. I am so proud of Jon….. he was totally committed to Sandpiper from Day 1… and has now become our new Favorite --- a leader, a tremendously hard worker, and a great promoter of the game and of Sandpiper Bay. Jon is a highly skilled Golf Course Superintendent. He has a Forestry Degree from Southeastern Community College in his hometown of Whiteville, NC, and
BS Degree in Turf Grass Management from North Carolina State University. He is a Member of the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America, and is a Member and former officer of the local Palmetto Superintendents Association. But more than these degrees and memberships, Jon is a hardworking man. At Sandpiper Bay, Jon is the Superintendent, the Spray Technician and the Irrigation Specialist. He manages his employees, the Maintenance Department budget, and the chemical and fertilizer schedules that keep our course in great shape. He is quick to find and solve problems, and has recently been the point man in our $500,000 on course renovation projects. Jon’s oversight was key as we contracted an outside agent to install new drainage and sand in 60 bunkers…. and eliminated an unnecessary 30 bunkers. Jon also went above and beyond as he led our own crew in taking out 80 pine trees after a contracted service took out an initial 280. Jon was true to the Superintendents dream of taking down as many pine trees as possible ---- turf grass hates shade! We love Jon at Sandpiper Bay, and love him more because he puts his family first. He and his wife Jessica have four year old Gabby and twin two year old boys Tristan and Battle. Trips to the beach, and to the mountains with his family are Jon’s priorities. In February, Jon was teaching Gabby to snowboard -- I told Jon to be very careful --we all need him and Gabby to come home healthy.
