Waccamaw Trail takes its name from the scenic Waccamaw River that forms the western border of South Carolina’s Hammock Coast, a narrow 20-mile stretch of land that extends from just below Myrtle Beach to the historic port city of Georgetown. Celebrating 50 Years on the Grand Strand Golf Scene Story by Ian Guerin
C
hrista Bodensteiner doesn’t care to be the focal point of the many stories that will be written or told about Litchfield Country Club this year. Yes, Bodensteiner is the lone female head golf professional of the 90 or so tracks along South Carolina’s Grand Strand. And, yes, she has continued to help Litchfield thrive in numerous additional roles since she returned in the early 2000s. But as the course prepares for its 50th anniversary later this year, establishing and then holding on to all the reasons Litchfield is about to hit that golden celebration is the prioritized topic these days. One of the original courses in the Myrtle Beach area and the first to open in Pawleys Island looks almost exactly the way it did when it opened in 1966. “It’s a huge plus to be able to maintain the integrity of the design. The design is enjoyable enough at Litchfield Country Club to not need to change it,” Bodensteiner said of Willard Byrd’s layout. “I think it fits. I don’t see too many designs like this right now. A lot of people appreciate that. Not too many people can say that.”
- which included two locals and four others from around the Carolinas probably didn’t envision this type of staying power, either. After all, the course was only added as a way to attract people to the seaside inn during the non-summer months. It fueled a push toward not only more courses - the well-known Waccamaw Golf Trail can trace its roots to Litchfield - but also Pawleys Island’s popularity as a whole. The town did not full incorporate until 1985, when its tourism-first identity had grabbed hold of a smaller population that had once admonished the heavy traffic Myrtle Beach a few miles to the north was drawing each year. “The key players in Pawleys Island were the ones who started Litchfield Country Club,” Bodensteiner said. “Because of the people who started Litchfield, they were the ones who brought golfers to the beach. I don’t know how long it would have taken otherwise, but we had the key players.” For Bodensteiner, the countdown toward November 19 - Litchfield’s official anniversary - has been a reward in itself. She’s tracked down old photo

albums and historical tidbits while getting ready for a party only three other courses on the Grand Strand have ever been able to throw. Dug up along the way have been references to George Washington, the old Kings Highway he travelled in 1791 now serving as portions of three holes and the clubhouse. There was also mention of Litchfield’s first hole-inone, achieved by Mrs. Lewis B. Thompson on the opening day. The course was well-armed in the pursuit of a half century more of golf. First, a scenic backdrop including centuries-old live oaks, Spanish moss and popping azaleas lining most of the holes was complimented by an oversized, plantation-style clubhouse. Coupled with the sea breeze blowing in from the nearby Atlantic Ocean, the ambiance was prevalent. And then there was the playability factor. Measuring no longer than 6,700 yards from the championship tees, members and then single-round players (the course was originally private) discovered Litchfield wasn’t going to mow through high-handicappers. Instead, Byrd laid out a track capable of allowing for use of every
club while sticking with the player-friendly mantra he used so often during his career. Roughly half of the 18 holes include some type of dogleg, with a decent amount of water and sand sprinkled in throughout. All these years later, Litchfield has stayed its own course. Be it reactions to a downturn in the economy or growing concerns involving bottom lines, other courses elected to scrap holes or even re-design entire sections. This one has needed only minor touch-ups, putting its efforts into keeping the grounds in tip-top shape. “A lot of people love that it’s an oldschool course,” said Susan Gibbons, a member since 1990. “Yeah, they could have done some things to make it more exciting. But part of its charm is that it is it has stayed the same. It was a true Southern, charming golf club. “I have no desire to go anywhere else. I’m one of these people, I figure I picked well. I love that it sort of sustains itself.” Fifty years is all the evidence needed to back up her remarks.

Wachesaw Plantation East Golf Club represents the best of a traditional Scottish Design golf course. Architect Clyde Johnston carved this course out of a former rice plantation in Murrells Inlet. Regardless, the thought-provoking track was crafted to reward the patient, an approach that sticks with players after wrapping up on the signature hole. The green of the par-4, 430-yard No. 18 bends slightly around a small pond, leaving most to consider it one of the course’s most challenging holes.

Wachesaw East is one of the few Myrtle Beach area golf courses that offers a public venue for full service dining. Father & Son Events Boast Special Niche In Golf By Bob West

yrtle Beach to Bandon Dunes, St. Andrews to Waterville and even among retired PGA TOUR stars, the most endearing tournaments in golf are the wildly popular ones pairing fathers and sons. The Texas Golf Association has been staging a Father-Son since 1981, Golfweek jumped on board with its version in 1983, Cleveland Golf hosts one at Pebble Beach and SkySports sponsors a European Father-Son in Spain. Meanwhile, in Prescott, Ariz., the 57th Arizona Golf Association Father-Son tees off this year. Father-Son tournaments, as Myrtle Beach’s Robert Harper resoundingly discovered 19 years ago, have the same lure as that renowned baseball cornfield in Dyersville, Iowa. Host one and they will come. Usually in droves. Harper, then the GM/Director of Golf at Wild Wing Plantation in the late 1990s, became increasingly concerned over empty tee sheets and clubs actually shutting down on summer afternoons. For a guy in the golf business, it did not sit well that Myrtle Beach was just a “beach vacation destination.” Necessity, as is so often the case, became the mother of invention, and gave birth to what has become the largest Father & Son tournament in the world. “I initiated a guerilla marketing campaign in March of ‘97 and we had 104 teams for our first event in July,” Harper

said. “Our 10th anniversary attracted 808 teams. We have since expanded to include Father & Daughter and Mother & Daughter Team Classics.” This summer, the Father-Son portion of what is now presented as Family Golf Week drew teams from 46 states and seven foreign countries. They competed in 18 flights over 54 holes on 9 courses. Each team played three different layouts, including some of the best in the Myrtle Beach area. The appeal for father-son tournaments is fairly obvious. It’s about bonding, bridging generations, camaraderie and, in some cases, rekindling relationships that may not be as close as they once were. Time, distance and sons trying to make their own way in distant cities can create a void. As a retired sports editor who still writes a weekly golf column, I have experienced first-hand the joy and value of father-son tournaments. Grayson, the youngest of my three sons, and I have been regulars in the Texas Golf Association’s Father-Son for the past decade. Two years ago, with old dad headed toward his 71st birthday, a decision was made that we needed more of a good thing before it was too late. So we added the National Father & Son in Myrtle Beach and the inaugural Fall Family Match Play Classic at Bandon Dunes. Grayson dragging me to Hooters for a couple of meals, to smoking cigars at the firepit in Bandon Dunes after finishing second in our flight. Enhancing the experience were the people we were paired with. We’ll never forget the father-son duo from London – Andrew and Martin Lawrence -- who have been coming to Myrtle Beach for 12 years. In one of the many neat stories you encounter at events like this, the Lawrences no longer have to worry about accommodations. That’s because they were invited to stay at the home of Ron and Scott Taylor. The Taylors were their very first opponents in Myrtle Beach. They quickly developed a solid friendship with the Americans and it led to the Taylors opening their home to the British duo. We’ll also be eagerly following the future of eighth-grade Dallas prodigy Hannah Kerekes, after we went up against her and her dad, Jon, at Bandon Dunes. Hannah, a product of the Jim McLean Golf Academy, is such a ferocious competitor that after Grayson sealed a win for us in the pre-tourney shootout, she said, “Get ready, I’m coming after you.” Consequently, we’ll be making the same three stops again in 2016. And, at our wardrobe coordinator, Grayson’s, insistence, we’ll be adding a team logo for the best-dressed competition at Myrtle Beach.

Golfer’s Elbow A common injury that the golfer may encounter is elbow pain. Pain on the inside is usually referred to as Golfer’s elbow”. Golfer’s elbow is a very common injury and there are usually more than 200,000 cases every year. Golfer’s elbow is a tendinitis or inflammation of the forearm muscles that attach onto the inside of the elbow. Factors that contribute to this injury include: overuse or over practice, poor swing mechanics, over swinging, not warming muscles up properly, and incorrect grip or setup. Risk for this increases with age (usually after 40), and is highest in people who perform the repetitive activity more than two hours daily. Treatment mainly focuses on a “relative” rest period. You need to stop the inciting event that is causing the strain, inflammation, and pain. To allow this to calm down, oral or topical anti-inflammatories are commonly used. Corticosteroid injections or platelet rich plasma injections are also used commonly when needed. A counterforce brace or strap is also a good option to use. During this time I like to have golfer’s focus on physical therapy that will reduce inflammation, promote flexibility, increase range of motion, and increase strength. This process will typically be about 6-12 weeks depending on the severity of this injury. When that has been addressed, swing mechanics need evaluated and modified as indicated. This will then allow a better and gradual return to golf. With this successful formula your pain and dysfunction will be resolved, and your golf game will be more improved as well. here is a tendency in life to gravitate towards what is new, but typically standing the test of time is the truest indicator of quality. That is certainly the case at Oyster Bay Golf Links, one of the Grand Strand’s premier layouts. The Dan Maples design opened to universal acclaim in 1983, winning “Best New Resort Course” honors from Golf Digest, and it has only gotten better with age. The combination of a beautiful piece of coastal property, a commitment to service, and Maples’ design wizardry has kept the course atop the play-list for smart group leaders. “It’s one of the original courses down here,” Head Pro Tim Jackson said. “It’s a timeless classic.”

But it’s the layout that brings players back. Maples original work has been largely left untouched, allowing its quality to shine. The hole plays just 280 yards from the white tees with water lurking on the right, but the cavernous bunker that fronts the green has been slightly reduced in size, providing some bailout room. In all, there is water on 16 of 18 holes, and Oyster Bay rewards precision far more than power. Golfers that hit the ball straight will be playing from the fairway and have a huge advantage.
Between those two beauties is the beast – No. 16, which might be the hardest par 4 at the beach. The 16th plays 389 yards from the white tees (a mammoth 450 from the blues) and water dissects the fairway, guaranteeing a long approach.
Regardless, any Myrtle Beach golf trip that includes Oyster Bay on the itinerary is a good one.

Bondfire Restaurant Group Igniting Myrtle Beach
I
njecting fresh and modern culinary flavor notes into the downtown Myrtle Beach restaurant scene is a task for which Larry James Bond, founder and president of Bondfire Restaurant Group, is uniquely qualified. Bond, who was born in North Carolina, launched his career in the food and beverage industry as a young teenager. He took managerial positions with increasing responsibilities in Miami and Myrtle Beach area restaurants, and by the time he was 21 years old Bond was managing Kingston Plantation’s Omaha Steakhouse fine dining restaurant, the Fish Eye Grille and Splash Pool Bar, the Night Watch Lounge and all room service operations. He spent four years learning and growing at Kingston.
When Larry Bond moved back to Myrtle Beach he resumed working at Kingston Plantation and oversaw more than 90,000 square feet of banquet space in addition to operating all of the resort’s food and beverage outlets. After two years he gave four months’ notice that he was taking a management position with the TBonz Restaurant Group, and for the next six years his duties included managing Rioz Brazilian Steakhouse and being the opening manager for Flying Fish Public Market & Grill at Barefoot Landing and Capriz Italian Feast at Broadway at the Beach. In January 2013, Bond was ready to own his own restaurants. He and his wife, Fabiana, established Bondfire Restaurant Group, and they traveled to many different countries where they learned about the cultures and cooking techniques. Blending those experiences with talented local chefs is a key component in Larry Bond’s strategy to bring more unique offerings to the Myrtle Beach area. In 2013 the Bonds opened their first concept beside the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, ART Burger Sushi Bar, as a tribute to his artist mother. Many afternoons Linda Weatherspoon can be found at ART creating pet portraits that people commission, and what they pay for the pastels and oils of their pets are used to fund art therapy lessons.
Bond moved back to Miami to take a great job as the general manager of Dan Marino’s Fine Food & Spirits, but a family emergency caused plan changes. In 2007 his mother, Linda Weatherspoon, had a brain aneurysm, and he returned to Myrtle Beach to help in her rehabilitation. WeatherLocated at 700 N. One of the most appealing types of planned communities is a golf course commu-
nity – even for those who do not play golf. These communities have much to offer, from young families just starting out to empty-nesters to retirees. The obvious attraction is the golf course itself, which can run around and/or through the subdivision. The course can offer serene views of trees, green space, and water. The openness of the course and its landscaping give residents beautiful sights and in most cases, fresher air. For those who enjoy the game of golf, community residents often receive discounts or incentives to use and or belong to their neighborhood course. Quite often, driving to the golf courses can add a great deal of time to the golfer’s day. However having one that is just around the corner is very convenient and a time saver. Along with the golf course, these communities tend to have much to offer, including clubhouses, fitness/wellness centers, pools, tennis court, basketball courts, playgrounds, walking paths, ponds, planned activities for residents, and more. While the common grounds of golf course communities are usually as immaculately kept as the course itself. Whenever Nate DeWitt sees a great picture or video clip that showcases one of his company’s golf courses in a flattering light, he’s quick to act. It has become easy to see why. DeWitt, who manages the social media strategy for Founders Group International (FGI) and its collection of 22 Myrtle Beach-area golf courses, knows he’ll get a fairly immediate array of reactions when he posts these items to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. “It’s fascinating to see not only the volume, but range of positive reactions,” said DeWitt. “An aerial picture of ‘The Gambler’ hole at King’s North (at Myrtle Beach National), or a flyover video of the 14th hole at Grande Dunes are the kinds of visuals that really generate a buzz. And it will be anything from a one- or two-word reaction from a Twitter follower like ‘Wow’ or ‘Beautiful,’ to a share from a Facebook fan to a fellow golfer in his annual buddy trip group, asking why they haven’t played this great course yet. “It really has become a great branding tool for our golf courses.” The aerial photos and flyover videos, in particular, come to DeWitt via the use of their company’s remote controlled quadcopter capable of capturing multimedia in high resolution and high definition. A random flight in the skies above an FGI course has become a fast, easy and effective way to get the imagery they need to generate a quick social media reaction.
Notes DeWitt, “A 10-second video, or even a random overhead shot of a course from an angle that no one’s really seen before, is often all it takes to get the ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ really going on any given day.” While dramatic imagery is a big part of his company’s social media equation, it’s surely not the only part.
“Featuring engaging content is the bigger-picture focus,” says DeWitt. “It may be an article on one of our Web sites that highlights five unique par-3 holes on the Grand Strand, or a write-up that offers an opinion on the best places around town for a post-round meal. “It’s really about providing resources and information in an easily accessible form, to help folks learn more about the Myrtle Beach golf market and make more informed decisions about their future golf plans.” See for yourself at the Founders Collection’s primary social media outlets: Facebook –
